i think the new interpretations probably aren’t actually that glaring, i left the fandom a bit before covid so it small changes might’ve just been more obvious because of rapidly throwing myself back into it. also it’s probably just the people i follow, but the fandom feels a lot better at not getting neck-fucking-deep into fanon, myself included, and i’m just not seeing it with fanfiction eyes anymore ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ hell yes for discussion
even if they WERE glaring (yes i said the opposite abt spot to my other anon but the thing is that both r valid). it’s still only an interpretation. like idk. like
for me it’s less an issue with fanon because i think fanon is what makes this fandom so unique. and in the name of that, the othering of the uk production…. does not make sense. more interpretations of characters we’ve known for years only makes an individual’s interpretation of a character MORE NUANCED. which is also why this production slayed so hard bc there’s so much history and fan history as well.
to be fair i don’t see it in my circle of ppl i follow rly either but yk some people can’t just go and see the uk production so it’s easier to think of something they can’t access as separate or other, and for ppl who’s first intro is the uk production like we been around a long time but it’s all content very different from what they saw live.
basically i kind of think ooc for this fandom is dead in a way because you can kind of justify ur characterization very specifically at this point. like there’s lots of interpretations in fanfic that i literally despise but i can’t Exactly go up and be like ur wrong. like i wish i could but i can’t

Would you maybe be willing to go over the process of tagging on ao3? I've never used it before so I can figure out most of it but the entire posting process is new to me
Of course!
If you don’t mind, I’m just going to cover all of it, because you aren’t the first person to ask this.
So- tagging!
In simple terms, tags have the same purpose on AO3 that they do on Tumblr. They’re to inform you of the content, summarize and warn, and to help organize the search system. They can be complicated, and daunting, but can also be largely unique if one so chooses. I’ll explain how in a minute!
By adding a tag, you are inserting your work into a list, or a system, of other works that fall under the same category. For example: if you are writing a Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski work, and you tag that relationship, the work will show up when you search that relationship. It’s one of AO3’s best features, and a way an author can gain popularity in a fandom.
Now, starting at the top of your AO3 form, we have the rating. Now, I like to think of your rating as a movie rating. Everyone has a little bit of a different view on these, but for our collective purpose of explanations, let’s use this standard guide.
The first one is general audiences. This is a PG rated movie. Minimal language, some sexual and adult jokes that might fly over someone’s head, and little to no violence. You would let your 11yo cousin read this fic and not be concerned.
The next is teen and up audiences. This is your PG-13, TV-14. We’ve got curses going around, but not all of them. Sexual jokes, light sexual content that probably doesn’t go very far. If there’s violence, it’s Marvel movie, see blood but no gore style.
Mature is where things get interesting. Say whatever you want, have the smut scenes, and shoot outs in the alleyways. Children aren’t allowed into this R-rated movie, but we all know it’s for the 15+ girlies who are reading on their computers in the dark.
And explicit is anything goes, basically. If you’re reading an explicit fic, and you get surprised by what you see, that’s a you problem. ‘Tis the smuttiest of the smut, the most hardcore violence and angst, and characters run rampant in their actions and words.
And then we have the warnings! These are what I consider to be the most important, because a lot of these things are triggers. It’s pretty self-explanatory, as you can pick and choose anything that applies.
Fandoms is also pretty self-explanatory. You use AO3’s list of fandoms, and click whatever fandom you’re writing for. For this exchange, you would type Newsies, and select the options and forms of the show you took inspiration from.
Categories is more confusing, I think, primarily because one can never decide if you want to click every button that applies, or just the important ones. In my personal experiences, I tend to just click whatever option represents the main ship I’m writing for, and then make sure I tag anything that doesn’t fit that category in the relationships tags. You are definitely free to select everything, though!
Relationships is pretty important, just for information purposes. Most people search AO3 through specific relationships they want to read, and so I make sure to tag everything I can, just for algorithm and accessibility reasons. You can tag the romantic relationships (the ones with the / between the two character names), platonic relationships (the ones with the & between the character names), and everything in between, depending on how you want your fic viewed, and how you want it sorted in the tagging system (by this, I mean if you want it put in the list of ‘x’ (ex. Harley Keener/Peter Parker) works, falling under a specific tag). And if you want viewers to be aware of the different relationships, especially the romantic and platonic ones, always double check that you have selected the right tag (again, for romantic there’s a /, and for platonic there’s a &).
Characters are also important, but I want to stress that you do not need to tag all of the character that appear in your fics. I would simply tag the ones the work focuses around, or that have an impact on the story. It will take you forever to tag everyone if you’re writing a longer story.
Additional tags is another very confusing thing. A lot of people view them as similar to Tumblr tags, like I said earlier, and this is where you can have some originality, like the Tumblr tags. When I am adding additional tags, I will read the story as I tag it, and make sure I add tags that apply to the important bits. You can keep it professional, with just the tags that will help get you more readers, and trigger warnings; or you can have fun with it, and simply put your thoughts about the work there, as another summary; or you can do a mixture of both. I do a mixture, and will add tags that add the work to popular searches, and add a running commentary/summary as I do so. This part is completely up to you, and you can explore what you want to put by typing random letters or names (things will pop up by either most common or alphabetical order, depending on what you’re typing) into the search bar, just to see what shows. My main suggestion- and pretty steadfast requirement for this exchange- is that you make sure you have a tag for plot points that might be triggering for some. Other than that, the world is your oyster!

ok new ramble (about newsies ocs) today so sit tight inside roosevelt's carriage and enjoy the ride
FIRST, I very much adore the world of newsies and the cast, and I so often think how interesting the story would play out with different roles or new characters--
SECOND, Sue me, but I like x readers, i LOVE x readers, i WRITE x readers and i love ocs and self inserts and If whoever reading this has rummaged through the newsies x reader tag, they'd see that quite often, the reader or oc is a newsie, or, a girlsie for whatever reasons, and, while that's pretty fun, I think that we could all totally have some fun with other types of dynamics and professions!!
I believe that Miss Medda and her theatre deserved to have a bit more lore and connection with the story OUTSIDE of Miss Medda herself. Do the newsies frequent the theatre? Are they friends with any of the singers, dancers, whatnot? Have THEY performed there once? Who's to think that the newsies haven't collaborated with Miss Medda to use her creative resources for activism during the strike (that would be very cool)?
Oh, and nothing gets me giggling, kicking my feet and feeling all giddy than a theatre romance-- Your OC/Reader performing the hell out of the show when they see a certain newsie in the audience? Writing a poem/song based off them, or, hell, for platonic feelings sake, dedicating a play to their strike?
And, hey, what about journalism? What about being Katherine's best friend? If you'd still like your oc/reader to be a newsie, what about for intentions different than "because I had to"/"I felt different"/ or the like? Maybe your oc is a journalist undercover as a newsie to get the latest details? Or, working under Pulitzer to spy on the newsies during their strike (Could lead to many different kinds of conflict, imo)
Maybe some of my examples could be leaning dangerously on the edge of historical inaccuracy, but, truthfully, I honestly don't care much? Might be a bad thing to say, but, so long as it isn't ENTIRELY inaccurate, I, personally, am not too nitpicky about any details!
This is not to say "Stop making your ocs newsies!", but, if you're writing with the idea to diversify or bring something new to the table, deviating from the common stuff is pretty cool. But if you're not, that's cool too, so long as it's not hurting anyone or everyone's having fun :-)

hi!
i haven’t done this in a LOOOONG time. i used to write on here under the url imaginesxyou when i was like 13, but i miss writing and shipping and general tumblr shitposting so bad. i figured i’d do a little introduction to let you guys get to know me, and i’ve put my fandom list here too so you guys know what stuff i might write for!!
so i’m jackie. i’m 20 years old and based in the uk. i’m queer and genderfluid (any pronouns) so i’m happy to write any lgbtq+ requests you guys have. i’m an apprentice travel agent at the moment, and a lot of my time is eaten up by work. however i’ll try and pop on here and answer some of your requests when i can!! my hobbies generally include writing, watching tv and movies, and singing! i sing at my local open mic night and i really love it. i listen to all kinds of music, but i perform strictly 60’s music at the moment. i’m hoping to branch out into 70s and 80s stuff too when i have time. i’m also autistic and my hyperfixations can change quite often, so i’ll likely close some fandoms on my list depending on what i’m fixated on at the time. everything in me wants to say davey…. so i’ll say davey lmao. i had a hard time separating fanon from canon for this but i really relate to him a lot? the kid with the “”burden”” of taking care of the family, the one who is expected to have all of the answers, a good leader, good at keeping people on task, family-oriented despite it all, and very very gay. <3
(i would add fanon things that i relate to for davey but i….. exclusively write fanon things for davey……. let’s be real davey is a self insert at this point)
the character i’m least like is probably race!! no hate against him, i love him to bits, but i don’t really relate to him in canon. he’s funny, extroverted and knows how to rally a crowd, and although we relate in general ways i just don’t see myself in him tbh
unpopular opinions…… lmfao i still don’t understand the beef between livesies and 92sies. get a grip and let people like what they like!! i also think that ship discourse (which i see a lot less of now, thank christ) is stupid as shit and unnecessary. rapid fire: davey isn’t a mom friend, jack isn’t stupid, writing a heavy newsies accent in fic (HEAVY heavy) isn’t the slay people think it is, ignoring the classism in the show is stupid, katherine needed to be fleshed out better but she’s still a good character, and race exists more than to be the “funny annoying friend”/spot’s boyfriend. ✨💕

tanner i am humbly asking you to talk to me about tour ocs 🙏🙏
I love my little gang of fucked up little guys so much and I’ve been trying to unravel the actual lore behind them and their connections to jack more recently because there is a lot SO under this prompting I’m gonna list a few (of like, 15-) and humbly ask for questions because otherwise idk where to start
they form a gang of newsies/thieves/conmen/fists for hire depending on what’s needed and are constantly at odds with the manhattan newsies, most notably ones being:
kingfisher, the boss. he has a past with jack that left a lot of tension and he’s an expert conman/manipulative genius
jackdaw, second in command. he helps keep the peace and balance our kingfisher
jester, the unofficial third. he floats between the lodgings and the gang and is desperate to escape but kingfisher has him under his thumb
smudge, spitefire and magpie, the littles. they stick to each other like glue and no one fully knows where they came from
fox, the technical runaway. he spent time with them when he was younger but left in favour of the delancey’s
the rest don’t have set roles but do have their one little stories: soap (my self insert), skillet, screws, stitches, barrel, blackout, anchor and splinter (the brothers), bullet and sparky

my least kudos on any fic ever is Something About Julia which is a Bandstand fic! I have to say I just reread it and I do think it's very sweet. I like the characterization I gave Michael and I think it's a fun little fluff piece!
why did i start writing? uh. i was fourteen years old and in love with spot conlon <3 my first fic ever was a self insert oc newsies fic lmaoooo. i deleted it like a year later bc I was already embarrassed so you couldn't find it if you tried but now you know lol. i kept writing because I love it, idk. I'm about to graduate college with a creative writing degree so I guess I just fell in love with it
my favorite kind of comment/feedback is getting a specific moment that somebody liked and/or a prediction for what something means in a muti-chapter fic! i love getting details even if it's like a copy paste of a line with "lol" after it I like knowing exactly what got a reacting out of somebody
