i need to ramble ok. unordinarys readjustment classes already suck balls theyre obviously a parallel to real world troubled teen camps and theyre (rightfully) referred to as torture in-text but in 294 john says for the ENTIRE 3 MONTHS he interacted with NOBODY except keon and that prompts so many questions. was he allowed out of the “lesson” room? did he sleep somewhere else? like… he was enrolled for excessive violence, right? if he was allowed out, was there no one else supervising him? was he wearing those handcuffs the entire time?? how did he go to the bathroom??? how did he eat, did keon bring him food????? it makes me insane . HE WAS LIKE 15

the tragic thing about john doe is that he was doomed from the start.
he was likely born in a low- or mid-tier district: new bostin high's old king, zirian, was the only one john had trouble beating, before he figured out how to amplify abilities, and at the time he beat zirian, zirian was a 3.7. zirian, pre-john, was considered incredibly powerful, nigh unbeatable. in new bostin, someone who was barely an elite was considered incredibly powerful.
god-tiers are already incredibly rare. they're even more rare than high-tiers, and whenever remi, blyke, and isen visit a low-tier district as vigilantes, everyone regards them almost as royalty - unbelievably powerful, unreachable, divinity on earth. they are with dozens, and they’re terrified of a single, non-hostile girl. also, some of the background characters say: “what’s a high-tier doing in branish?” “yeah, they would never come to a place like this.” most low-tiers likely have never even seen a high-tier in the flesh, let alone a god-tier.
add to that that wellston is supposed to be the most powerful school in the province, at least, and before john, there were only two god-tiers in attendance: an 8.0 and a 6.3. and before arlo became king, rei was, and rei was a 5.8. the king of the strongest school in the province was a 5.8.
jane doe was raised in a god-tier family. she knows, presumably, what it means to be a god-tier, when everyone around you is weaker than you, and not by a little bit. but jane has been gone since john was a toddler - and the only person left to raise him was his father. his cripple father, who has lived his whole life being spat on, disregarded, considered less than.
and then you have john. john first discovered his ability in his last year of middle school. unordinary doesn't give us an exact timeframe, but it is mentioned that he first uses his ability towards the end of the school year. if we assume that the education system in unordinary is comparable to the us education system, then that makes john about fourteen years old. it is never mentioned when most kids discover their abilities, but sera mentioned that she got martial arts lessons for a few years when she was a young child, but stopped when her ability came in. assuming sera's development is normal and abilities usually come in at the same age regardless of level, that would place the average age well before ten. another thing: everyone around john seemed to assume he would never get an ability. they considered him a cripple. which either means that late-bloomers are so incredibly rare that it isn't even considered a possibility, or john was so far past the age of ability manifestation that no one thought it was possible.
of course, his dad was also a cripple, and since genetics are a thing in uno, it would make sense for people to assume john would be a cripple even before he passed the manifestation age. (and treat him accordingly)
john got expelled in his second year in high school. when, exactly, doesn't really matter. once again assuming that the uno education system works like the us education system, that would place john at 15-16 years old.
so you have this kid, sixteen years old, who's had his ability for about two years. he spent most of his life being considered the lowest of the low - spat on, disregarded, less than. his dad, his only parental figure, has had those exact same experiences, and the only thing he can tell his child is that that is just the way the world works. it's unfair, but that's life.
but then he gets an ability. and within two years, he is almost twice as strong as the second strongest kid around. none of the adults have ever met someone as strong as him. him, the former cripple, with the cripple father. former lowest of the low, now a god amongst men. the kids, though, his classmates, his peers, they don't really understand his power. how much stronger he is than them. to tell the truth, he doesn't either, not fully. he's never met someone as strong as he is, at sixteen. but his classmates, they just remember when they used to walk all over him. when they would beat him bloody and then complain about getting his disgusting cripple blood on their shoes. and now he dares to stand above them?
they don't like him. of course they don't. cripples aren't able to become gods. they can't comprehend that john did.
and john, obviously, lashes out at his former bullies. he finally has a chance to pay them back, for all the cuts, bruises, broken bones he'd received from them over the years. he's stronger than them, and it's his turn to make them hurt. he goes farther than they did - their abilities are useless against the might of his power - but he doesn't really care. (they never held back, so he doesn't either, and the damage he does is much, much worse. the adults are mad, and he doesn't get why. he's only doing what everyone else does.)
the adults have no idea how to handle him. he's out of control. but they've never seen an ability this powerful before, except on tv, or in stories. high-rankers are supposed to keep order. (but no one listens to john. why would they? he's just a cripple, the lowest of the low, who managed to cheat the system.) his dad, kind-hearted william doe the cripple, has no idea how to help him. he can't relate to his problems at all. (is there even a problem? who wouldn't want to be powerful? for william, for adrian, for claire, it'd be a dream come true. it used to be, for john.) there is no one around who even vaguely knows what it's like to be a god-tier, or even a high-tier, or even just a high-ranker in general, except for zirian, who's barely a high-ranker at all, and who hates john for dethroning him. there is no one who understands him.
so then you have john. sixteen years old. god-tier. angry at the world, and the world is angry at him. how was he ever supposed to win?

Currently seriously thinking of writing an UnOrdinary fanfic that would be just your average "i got isekaied in the fantasy novel i was reading" webtoon style story except the main character wakes up as a lower mid-tier from New Bostin, who is explained they were sent in a coma by John but now they woke up. And then "oh yeah btw your application for Wellston high has been accepted" and there are every possible tropes crammed in it, the "trying to make my fave survive the story", the "investing in the right stuff at the right time" the "making friends with people who will end up relevant", the "trying to set up my otp with each other/trying to date my fave", the "came to the big confrontation location with popcorn so i could watch" etc.
Main character's power would be something completely unhelpful in regards to the story but useful as a narrator, for example ability gauging like the guy from the mall in the first few arcs.
Also they would definitely be a rarepair nut and try to set up, idk, Vaughn and Valerie together or something ("yeah both their names start by v that's got to mean something") (not mocking rarepair nuts it's me i'm rarepair nut)
The end of the fic ends up with them waking up as a character from Cursed Princess Club or another big webtoon and realizing they're cursed to wreck havoc in every webtoon on their reading list before going back to their worlds, OR them waking up as themselves and posting an Ao3 update like "sorry for the wait, i got isekaied" refuse to elaborate, screenshot by someone, put on tumblr, 100k notes world heritage post etc.

Could you possibly do a band AU? Or like a famous Y/n with John Doe being a huge fan?
Of course! Also I'M BACK. A loooot has happened since the last time I posted and I haven't even been able to write until today. I'm hoping I haven't gotten too rusty in my long hiatus.
Warnings: None.
John Doe being a huge fan of famous!reader.
He first heard of you when you were in a band with your former friends.
John heard of your band through Claire who had accidentally stumbled upon your practice videos online.
At first he wasn't interested. The genre you played wasn't the kind of music he likes to listen to but he had to admit even then you had a nice singing voice.
He thinks nothing of you until he hears your band had broken up just shortly before he gets expelled from New Bostin High. He has better things to do with his time so he once again thinks nothing of it and forgets about you.
Until his first year in Wellston that is.
It was shortly before he met Seraphina that he saw you on the news and recognized you instantly. You were a rising sensation, becoming more famous by the day for your new hit single, a song about the betrayal you felt by your old friends for throwing you away.
John listens to it once out of curiosity and is hooked instantly. It hits him in a way he can't even describe and before he knows it he's obsessed. He listens to it everytime he starts feeling overwhelmed and takes solace in your voice.
You drop an album a month later and John is ready the day before, has the website up and ready to be refreshed so he can get his hands on a copy before the scalpers can take them all. But alas, his classmates decided the cripple was getting a little too cocky and decided to knock him down a peg. He completely misses the album release by multiple hours and its sold out when he checks it. John is upset but figures he'll get another chance.
That chance comes when you host a meet and greet down a couple streets from his apartment.
John is jittery with excitement when he walks into the cafe. The crowd is small but with every crowd comes a couple of troublemakers. This one happened to have your old band mates, who were very upset you had catapulted to stardom while they were still stuck on the bottom.
When you step out, they immediately start heckling and jeering at you and the sight of your horrified face is enough to get John to step in.
They are definitely not pleased to be confronted by a cripple. When they start to get violent with him, John is sure that he'll have to flee... then you step in. You singlehandedly sweep your old bandmates and coldly kick them out for daring to attack one of your fans. John will never forget what you said next.
"Cripple or King, it doesn't matter. Music is supposed to bring us together not tear us apart. He has just as much right to be here as anyone else."
And just like that you got yourself a fan for life.
When you learn he hadn't been able to get an album you give him one of your own copies. John cherishes it and has a special spot for it in his house.
He gets Seraphina into you so she too will support you. Your music quickly becomes a special thing for the two of them.
Buys your merch, albums and anything he can get his hands on. He will also watch any show or movie you decide to be in. Though watch out, just because he's your number one fan doesn't mean he won't comment on how strange or bad it is.
All in all, John looks up to you and has nothing but the best wishes for you. He's a great fan.

so there was this pub, the crooked house or the siden house, where im from that was kinda famous for being the "wonkiest pub in britain". its been there since 1765 (it was originally a farmhouse) and let me tell you, the inside was some of the coolest shit ive seen. it was fucking bostin.
but four days ago, it burnt down. now its nothing but rubble, and its being treated as an arson for the investigation.
and just,,, im so gutted. i have that kind of sadness where you feel empty inside because this was our pub. we're an impoverished area and a lot of our country laughs at us for the way we speak, but we're proud of our local culture and history.
honestly the siden house represented us; we're a little wonky bunch with our dialect the most close to old english and banding together like misfits in a movie.
but now its just gone. its one of the few tranklements of our history we get to hold and its just fucking gone, at someones hand. it was probably new developer who just bought it because its the cheapest way to clear a lot.
and i ay even angry at whoever it was, im just sad. as a brit, i hold no pride for my country and the history of it. but i am a proud yam yam, and right now, it just hurts.
#kai rambles#personal#delete later#probably#i just need to vent#because just#i day feel good rn#like ive been to the crooked house and it was so cool and i fucking loved it so much#and it was so unique and it was ours#it just feels like someones took part of my heart away#like i can be proud of my local history because it was the yam yams who dug the canals and mined the coal and built the factories#and transported the coal via canal and built the railroad tracks and built up all our little towns#and obviously there was exploitation happening and you know weve always been a working class area#we got our name the black country from how much dust and coal and steam was in the air round here#theres an entire story where apparently victoria came round in a carriage to visit an area very essential to industrialisation and she#refused to open the curtain on her carriage window because she was so disgusted with us#it was all local folks making the steel and the cars and the chains and the trains and all the rest#obviously we benefited from colonisation like any area of britain but we were also being oppressed and exploited by rich brits ourselves#but so much of our local architecture was built by us and the culture was built by us and the dialect came from us#and the siden house was part of that#and now its simply gone most likely because some fucking clarnet developer decided oh ill do some light arson to cut corners#who cares about our local culture or history? instead you can just laugh at our accents and our dialect and rewatch benefit street!#because weem all backerds roun' here day yow think? eatin faggots and fittle wommucking it down an' gooin to the foot of our stairs?#ar weem right gawbys in yo eyes. goo on gawp at us tek notes if yo want. just doe dither abou' it an' weem haven no more cotter with yow#ye im probably gonna delete this later#i fully just went yam yam slang there#im just upset and a little bit maddened

Mini rant time.
One of the most popular discussions in the Unordinary fandom is definitely the struggle between John Doe and the Royals at Wellston. I know John gets a lot of shit for his part in it, but I really don't blame him for most of it. His behavior at his school in New Bostin was atrocious of course, but when he moved to Wellston, he changed and made himself smaller to try and atone for what he did in an effort to not hurt anyone that severely again. Arlo started their rivalry and John simply finished it. To put it simply, Arlo fucked around and found out. As for the other Royals, they're not innocent in it either. Their job as Royals is to maintain the hierarchy, sure, but it should also be to make sure that the stronger students aren't abusing their powers, and they failed miserably in that. John went too far, yes, but he was blamed for everything that happened when in reality, the abuse he faced at Wellston was the result of the Royals' spectacular failure of managing the system they were so hellbent on maintaining. Also fuck you Vaughn for leaving the kids to "work it out on their own". In conclusion, John and the Royals both sucked, but Asslo takes the cake for highest level of suckery.

Ok, hot take of the century. Terrence is likely being manipulated by spectre too, just like Leilah, and we should bare that in mind rather than simply deciding he’s the bad guy in this.
Like, he is a level 4.4 who’s been convinced high tiers are inherently bad when hes litterally on the higher end of elite tiers, theres gotta be some manipulation involved to make him do the sorta mental gymnastics to think that everyone thats *0.6* levels above him is evil. Hell, im sure he even works with a few high tiers, Leilah is a god tier ffs.
I could be wrong, but he looks to be 15 at most, possibly even less. Spectre is taking impressionable kids and making them believe in their ideology and do their bidding. Maybe that’s exactly what they did to Leilah, maybe thats part of why she left. Maybe thats why all of their targets that we’ve seen so far have been school kids.
Anyways I see people saying they’re glad to see Terrence receiving the Keon treatment and I think, wow, you learnt nothing from John! Despite every horrible thing John did to the people at New Bostin, he didn’t deserve what Keon did to him. Nobody deserves emotional torture, like ???

New Bostin!John:
Ok so like. About the last question. He's still in high school, but I wanted to submit New Boston John in particular. He was a kid without powers in a superpowered world, and was constantly picked on for this. So when he *did* get a power of his own, he went ahead and made it everyone else's problem.
Wellston!John:
Is bullied. Bullies people. Puts a bag on his head and calls it a macaroni joker then bashes people's skulls in. Is spiraling down. Good old corruption arc but like big and fast and hard and dark (because his speech bubbles are black not because it's violent although it's also violent).

roland as adrion .. i think i might cry. it'd be a really interesting swap considering adrion's forgiving/subservient nature contrasting with roland's harsher, more bitter one. we've seen roland hold grudges before and that was only regarding terrence leaving them to fight on their own against a fakejoker, so itd be definitely different seeing his reaction to sera's whole incident[s].
evil rei oh my god *keels over and dies*. the idea of ice claws is so cool- especially since he's based on some cooler tones [teal hair, bluey grey x-static costume] it works as a good contrast to volcan's fire.
vaughn and keon switching makes a lot of sense too [since theyre both super shady]. i do agree that while having to swap abilities might be unfortunate, it's pretty pertinent to the plot so it makes sense!
im thinking, is it keene and doc who switch? or maybe doc and kayden. since keene isnt super plot relevant? originally i thought leilah, but im pretty sure she swapped with william :]
also! for some reason, the idea of elaine digging up dirt and isen totally at remi's whim is the funniest thing to me because it's so odd yet so already in character for them. i picture elaine to dig up dirt cause she likes making fun of people secretely [with cecile]-- elaine and cecile are unironically such a great duo in this though -v-
heyaaa, so sorry for the late reply spex :( yea i think roland would be a little harsher towards sera and would have a harder time forgiving her compared to adrion but i think they’d at least be on good terms (especially after the u-mart incident) before sera returns to wellston. he’d show his resentment way more when they were in new bostin though, with evie being the one to go easier on sera because she didn’t want to lose her first friend.
EVIL REI YESSS i wanna draw more of him tbh :3 the ice claws are sooo cool thank u mer ( @stingro ) for the idea!
tbh i was thinking of doc and kayden but it can change anytime if a more suitable character appears. if they were to switch, i think kayden would be a newly graduated nurse and darren would be a chemist who’s been working with william in spectre for a long time. kayden has to get involved with spectre some way through william tho, so i think he’d be william’s student/mentee or something? i also thought about going with the original storyline and making them date but kayden and william’s age gap and jane’s role being so ambiguous make things complicated. i’d probably switch kayden and doc’s ages if i were to go with that but i think the first case with kayden being william’s student works kinda better?? i’m a little unsure about this part so i guess i’ll have a more clear idea about them as the story progresses. oh and keene’s swap is probably nadia :) (the lie detector lady)
heheh yes isen and elaine’s swap is so funny to me too. isen just does everything remi asks of him and tries to flirt with her whenever an opportunity arises but remi ignores his attempts completely. i always imagined that she’d ask for sera’s old records from isen because he’s very good at this stuff but wants elaine to question her (idk why i just want that interview scene between them!). but what you said makes so much sense too, considering elaine looks down upon people a lot so she’d probably secretly make fun of people. i think in both ways, that scene would be a good insight on elaine’s character, revealing her prejudiced side. and yea, i love the cecile-elaine duo a lot here, they’re a little less mischievous than blysen (mostly due to elaine’s calmer personality) but they still care about each other sm :>

Hey! Sorry for the long ask, I just wanted to chime in if possible? Lol I actually haven’t seen all that much Isen hatred so imma talk about Elaine and Zeke in particular.
I think that the reason why people’s reactions to Elaine vs John, Arlo or Sera are so different, is because they are humanised - Elaine, on the other hand, is extremely one-dimensional. So whereas Arlo, John and Sera have their flaws and definitely have done questionable, bad things in the past, the narrative also presents us with different sides of them, as the main trio, which coexist with their bad traits and make them more bearable or even likeable. Characters like Zeke and Elaine, on the other hand, don’t have that - I think uru-chan has a slight issue with creating very one-dimensional minor characters. Take Zeke, for example - arguably, even his actions are not as bad as John and Arlo, per se - though Zeke is responsible for his actions, Arlo validated him with the hierarchy and never bat an eye or involved himself when Zeke abused the other students. John was way more brutal than Zeke, also abused people out of spite and his sick idea for revenge, even seemed to enjoy it back in New Bostin (in case someone wants to argue that it’s different because Zeke enjoys the beatings whereas John did not) and even abused, mentally and physically, his best friends - this is something even Zeke is not doing.
Now what’s the difference, though? Zeke doesn’t have anything deeper to his character than “bully” and this makes him way easier to hate than John or Arlo or Seraphina. He doesn’t get those moments of regret or self-hatred John gets, he doesn’t get soft moments with his buddies the way Arlo gets with Remi, he does’t get to be the “loyal best friend who’d go to hell and back for you” like Seraphina. The same thing could be applied to Elaine - he is just not developed enough and all we’ve got so far is 65% prejudiced snitch, 34.5% Arlo simp, 00.5% aaaw she cares for cripple sera actuallyyt!
Basically, some characters are written with the ideas of being a hate-sink and I think Uru intended to do that with Zeke and partially, Elaine. They can both be considered the “epitome” of what’s wrong with high-tier society (abuse and prejudice) but unlike the other characters who also have hate, love, trauma, trust, friendship etc.etc. to their characters, Zeke and Elaine barely have any of that which leaves them with just..abuse and prejudice (and “haha simp” which doesn’t exactly help Elaine’s case because we know how those characters are usually treated in media)
tbh yeah. its also just the way they're portrayed in the end. we also dont know much about their motivations either. because they're never quite shown in the positive light, its hard to sympathize. and then that effect is only amplified because we rarely ever get internal dialogue from either of them, offering zero insight into their thoughts or motivations

very frequent to see hate for the king john portion of unOrdinary which makes me sad bc not only is blykes solo vigilante arc EXTREMELY interesting and arlos conflict with his aunt sets up there which also gets really interesting later, but its like…. were seeing john in his purest “fight or flight” state. guy is having the worlds most violent and prolonged mental break, everything he does is some desperate grab for control so he can feel safe again. its both very revealing of his violent demeanor in new bostin being a direct result of the might makes right culture he grew up in but also what happened in readjustment just baking self-hatred into that panicked-animal-biting-whatever-moves mentality
i get that most of the hate is cuz its 36 episodes give or take and it mustve sucked waiting a whole week in between each of those (sometimes longer) only to see john keep degrading, but……. even disregarding the other arcs with other characters happening at the time, its important? its important to see him like that? i dunno. so much discussion abt it makes little to no effort at analysis beyond “john is the villain now” and even that is extremely surface level, and leads to people assuming things about the author which reek of the fact that people were reading johns mental breakdown as a cathartic revenge fantasy :(

i have very mixed feelings about the new bostin confrontation that got john expelled.
it is portrayed as the worst of john's actions in new bostin, his lowest, most violent moment. and while that last part is not untrue, i feel like the confrontation is a lot more complicated than just john going insane.
by that point, john had already been king for a little while, and he was absolutely terrible at it. (i've written before on why i think that is, and even his objectively horrible actions here were not excusable but understandable.) claire decided he needed to be stopped, and she gathered a bunch of their schoolmates to confront him, as her vision had shown. then, instead of trying to talk it out, zirian (one of the people she had gathered, for some reason) immediately attacked john, and everything devolved from there.
now, a few things stick out to me here:
first of all, claire took zirian with her to confront john. the question is: why? john and zirian had already fought on multiple occassions, and last time they fought, john had beaten zirian. did claire think seeing someone john defeated in a fair fight would make him realize he was a horrible person? did she think that if people saw zirian, they too would be willing to confront john? but wouldn't those people then think they were going to beat john up? did she not realize that if people believed her lie enough to follow her, they would be prepared to act on it too? i really struggle with her thought process here.
next, zirian thought that they could beat john if they all worked together. this supports my theory that the kids in new bostin had absolutely no idea how powerful a god-tier was. the wellston kids would never try to gang up like that on pre-ability loss seraphina - they knew she was too strong.
however, they did gang up on john at least sixteen-to-one (in episode 185, the shot with the most classmates shows sixteen people). when claire was telling the story to seraphina, she made it sound like it was completely unreasonable that john assumed that a group of people who all hated him, at least some of whom he had fought before, including the former king, would want to attack and overthrow him. "he refused to listen" is true, and something john has struggled with a lot both before and after the ambush, but to be honest, in his shoes, i also wouldn't have believed claire.
moreover, he is criticized for going too far in beating them up, but imo that mostly applies to claire and adrion, who weren't actually attacking him. the other fifteen kids were very clearly willing to hurt him just as much as he ended up hurting them. besides, they were attacking him fifteen-to-one, with claire standing to the side - what was john supposed to do? hold back?
the answer, of course, is yes: he should've. it was absolutely not right for him to go that far. but we must understand that john was sixteen, stressed, hurt, and facing people who were likely his former bullies, in the sense that everyone used to bully him.
(plus claire, who gathered everyone there, and how was he supposed to know that she didn't mean for it to turn out like that? and plus adrion, who called the authorities on him, which was objectively a good decision, but it can be hard to see it that way when you're the one who the cops are being called on)
in addition to that, if seraphina or even arlo had been ganged up on like that, no one would be surprised if they, too, fucked up their opponents. (remember that turf war back in episode 17/18/something? where arlo clearly wasn't just going to stop hurting rein, not until seraphina physically stopped him?) john was out of control and very much Not Okay, but his handling of the ambush actually seems to be quite typical for a god-tier.
so to conclude, the new bostin ambush/confrontation was more complex than simply john going crazy, and while both he and claire definitely think that he is the only one at fault there and he acted completely irrationally, that isn't actually the case, and uno readers should be aware that we are viewing the story from the perspectives of biased and thus unreliable narrators.
