Being a girl is: wanting to go to bed early but deciding to just get on tumblr/wattpad/Ao3 for a little bit and then end up finding a fic series that you really like and read until well past your usual bedtime then keeping on because it’s already past your bedtime. Then being mad when you wake up in the morning because you overslept your timer.

Summary: Before Y/N was even born she was to mate with the first son of Tonowari and Ronal who happened to be Ao’nung. Y/N was hoping that her parents would realize that Ao’nung isn’t the type of boy she wants to be with so when Neteyam and his family showed up she thought he was her escape. She believed that her and Neteyam were rewriting the stars but sadly Y/N’s hands were stayed tied to the promise her parents had already made for her.
Inspired Song: Rewrite The Stars by Zac Efron & Zendaya
Word Count: 2,356
Author’s Note: This has to be the longest story I have written in a while! I definitely suggest listening to the song before reading since it does reference some of the lyrics! THIS STORY IS ALL ANGST SO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Tumblr media
Y/N’s life started out just like every other teenage girl on Pandora till the Sully family showed up. Y/N is part of the Metkayina clan. Before she was even born she was to mate with the eldest son of the olo’eyktan who is the leader of the Metkayina clan. The eldest son of Tonowari and Ronal, who is named Ao’nung, was born first and then Y/N was.
Right when they were born their parents had them be around each as much as possible. As they grew up Y/N and Ao’nung were to always be around one another. Y/N didn’t mind it at first but as they got older Ao’nung became snobby and always made other Na’vi children feel like he was above them and better than them which Y/N wasn’t very fond of at all. She just couldn’t believe that in just a couple of years she will have to mate with him when he has an attitude that she completely despises.
Y/N has been hoping that one day her parents will realize that Ao’nung isn’t the type of guy she wants to spend the rest of her life with so when Y/N first laid eyes on the eldest son of the Sully family she was hoping that maybe that was a sign that she isn’t destined to be with Ao’nung. She was destined to be with Neteyam.
******************************
Y/N was out in the water with Tsireya on their ilus when they heard the horns signaling that the island had visitors so they made their way back to shore. Once they were close enough to the shore they got off their ilus and walked out of the water to see everyone in the village surrounding a Na’vi family that was from a different clan. Y/N could tell that they weren’t from the same clan by the darker blue of their skin and their different appearance such has their tails and arms.
Y/N noticed the younger son, Lo’ak was staring and flirting with Tsireya which made her giggle. But when Y/N looked at the older son, Neteyam she felt like she was hypnotized. When her ocean blue eyes met his yellow eyes it felt like it was just them on Pandora. When Ao’nung noticed he quickly became jealous so he wrapped an arm around Y/N’s shoulder which made her break her intense gaze from Neteyam.
She couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed for looking at another boy in front of her own village. Everyone in the whole village knows she is to mate with Ao’nung. She was in complete awe staring at this boy that she just met. They haven’t even said a word to each other yet.
Tonowari and Ronal talked to Sully family Y/N just kept her eyes down at the sand. After Tonowari let the Sully family stay Tsireya told them she would show them where they will be staying. Everyone went their separate ways. Ao’nung and his brother Roxto left with Tsireya since their parents ordered them to help the Sully kids adapt to Metkayina ways. When Y/N reunited with her family and went back to their Marui.
******************************
Y/N decided to help the Sully kids since Y/N’a father is helping Tonowari with Jake. Y/N had created a bond with every Sully kid but you can tell that the one she’s the closest with is Neteyam. They instantly connected which Ao’nung did not like at all. He saw the way Y/N looked at Neteyam and the way Neteyam looked at Y/N. It was driving Ao’nung crazy. Y/N should only be looking at him and only him. She belongs to him. To make Neteyam back off Ao’nung told Y/N’s parents hoping that it would get Neteyam in trouble but instead it got Y/N in trouble instead.
******************************
Y/N walked into her mauri to see her parents waiting for her. She knew something was wrong by the worried look in her mom’s eyes and the sternness in her father’s eyes.
“What is going on? Is something wrong?” Y/N asked with a mixture of worry and concern in her voice. “You bet there is something wrong!” Her father snapped at her with anger in his tone which took Y/N by surprise. “Kylor please! Don’t!” Her mother pleaded to her husband. “No! She is not going to break the promise we made to Tonowari and Ronal.” Her father said which quickly made Y/N realize what was going on. “Who told you?” Y/N asked with a sigh looking down at the floor. “Ao’nung.” Her mother answered. “Of course!” Y/N said with a frustrated sigh.
“You are to stay away from that Sully boy!” Her father ordered her which made her heart sink down to her stomach. “What? Why?” Y/N asked in shock looking back up at her father. “You know why! You are to mate with Ao’nung and that Sully boy is getting in the way of that!” Her father told her in a stern tone. “But Neteyam makes me happy! He’s so sweet and caring.” Y/N told him.
“I apologize for going against your wishes but I know in my heart that I belong with Neteyam not Ao’nung.” Y/N said finally admitting it out loud. She couldn’t keep it in any longer. When she’s with Neteyam she feels safe. Neteyam is who the boy she always dreamed that she would spend the rest of her life with. That’s who she wants her happy ending with.
“You listen here!” Her father started as he walked closer to her which made Y/N’s heart begin to race. “If you choose to disobey your order you will not only be a disappointment to this family but you will be a disappointment to your fellow Na’vi ‘s as well.” Her father told her pointing one of his fingers at her. Every word that came out of her father’s mouth it felt like someone was stomping on her heart. She could feel tears forming in her eyes. “You will mate with Ao’nung and that is final.” Her father told her in a demanding voice. Y/N just stared up at her father with glassy like eyes. “Yes, father.” Y/N finally said with a slow nod as tears made their way down her face.
*****************************
After dinner Y/N went outside to sit on one of the docks with her feet in the water. She couldn’t get the conversation she had with her father out of her mind. She knows she isn’t going to be able to stay away from Neteyam but she also doesn’t want to be a disappointment in her family’s eyes.
“I’m guessing that you had a rough day, too?” She heard Neteyam say behind her. “Yes, I guess you can say that.” Y/N answered with a sigh as she stared down at the fish swimming around her feet. Neteyam sat down next to her. When she looked over at him she noticed the cut on Neteyam’s lip.
“Neteyam! Your lip!” Y/N said in shock. “What happened?” She asked him with concern in her voice and a concern look in her eyes. “Lo’ak and I got into a fight with Ao’nung and his friends.” Neteyam told her with a sigh. She saw the ashamed look he had in his eyes which ticked her off because of how many times Ao’nung has put down others he’s finally pushed the wrong one’s buttons. “What did he do?” Y/N asked him. “He was picking on Kiri.” Neteyam answered which made Y/N’s heart ache. “I’m sorry.” Y/N said in a soft voice. “It’s not your fault.” Neteyam said locking his yellow eyes with her blue eyes.
Every time Y/N looks into his eyes she feels a strong spark go through her. As they stared into each other’s eyes they leaned in. When their lips touched they felt something in them that they have never felt before. When they pulled away from the kiss Y/N felt like she was walking on air. But it didn’t last long because when she heard her father’s voice in her head she snapped back into reality and realized what she just did.
“Oh no!” Y/N said quickly standing up. “What’s wrong?” Neteyam asked quickly standing up as well. “I have to go!” Y/N said but before she could walk away Neteyam grabbed her hand. “Neteyam! Let me go!” Y/N told him in a stern tone. “Not until you tell me what is wrong!” Neteyam said in the same tone she just used. “I just broke my promise!” Y/N told him as tears started to flood her eyes. “Promise?” Neteyam asked her.
“Before I was even born my parents promised Tonowari and Ronal that I would mate with their eldest son.” Y/N told him which made Neteyam feel like he just got stabbed in the heart. “You and Ao’nung are bond to mate.” Neteyam said with a mixture of sadness and anger in his voice. Y/N just gave him a nod.
“Do you have feelings for him?” Neteyam asked her with jealousy. “It doesn’t matter.” Y/N told him with sadness as a couple tears rolled down her cheeks. “The agreement has been said and done which makes my hands tied.” She added.
Y/N got out of Neteyam’s hold and walked away leaving him standing there all alone completely heartbroken.
****************************
Since that night Y/N and Neteyam have kept their distance away from each other which didn’t last too long. When the whole village gathered Tonowari told everyone that their village is being threatened by the sky people. Seeing everyone getting riled up it was getting Y/N very scared and over whelmed so she ran away from the crowd. Neteyam knew he had to follow her.
“Y/N!” Neteyam called out to her which made her stop walking. “Why did you follow me?” Y/N asked turning around to face him. “Because I’m worried about you.” Neteyam told her. “Neteyam-“ Y/N started to say but he cut her off. “I know that you’re to mate with Ao’nung but I know you feel that same way I do.” Neteyam told her.
“When we kissed that night you had no intention pulling away.” He said as he moved closer towards her which made her heart race. Y/N knew every thing he way saying is the truth. That’s why she ain’t running away from him because she knows she can’t run away from the truth. “We are meant to be together.” Neteyam told her putting one of his hands onto her cheek. Y/N leaned into his soft touch as he stroked her cheek lightly.
Before anything else could happen they Tsireya calling Neteyam’s name which quickly made him take his hand off Y/N’s cheek. When they looked over they saw Tsireya running up to them with Ao’nung and Roxto. “Lo’ak is gone!” Tsireya told them. “What?” Y/N said in shock. “Where did he go?” Neteyam asked her with sternness in his tone even though he had a worried look in his yellow eyes. “He went to go get Payakan.” Tsireya answered him. “Kiri and Tuk left to go follow him.” Roxto added. “Let’s go! They can’t be out there by themselves.” Neteyam told them.
*****************************
After Neteyam left Y/N and everyone else with the tracker that was on Payakan Y/N got captured by Quaritch and his crew with Lo’ak, Tuk, and Tsireya. Y/N tried her best to act brave at least for Tuk but when Quaritch put the barrel of his gun to Lo’ak’s head she really thought it was over but Payakan came out of nowhere and jumped onto the ship tipping it over knocking Quaritch and some of his men into to the water. Once the ship landed safely back onto the a water Neteyam jumped aboard which made Tuk call out her bother’s name in happiness. Neteyam cut Y/N and the girls first and then Lo’ak.
Y/N followed Tsireya and Tuk off the ship but she paused when she saw Neteyam follow Lo’ak in the opposite direction. Y/N was about to follow the brothers but Tsireya told her to come with her and Tuk so she did. After the girls got into the water Y/N and Tsireya tried to get at least Tuk to safety but she got captured again. The girls knew they had to go save her so they got onto their ilus. They spotted Kiri tied up with Tuk but before they could find a way back onto the ship without getting caught they heard Lo’ak’s voice.
They found him in the water with Neteyam and a human boy so they went over to them. Y/N noticed blood in the water and before Y/N could say anything Lo’ak told them that Neteyam got hit with a bullet. They knew they had to get Neytam to a safe place so Y/N told them to help Neteyam onto her ilu. Lo’ak got onto Y/N’s ilu behind Neteyam while Tsireya let the boy ride on her ilu with her. As Y/N led they away from the ship with her ilu Tsireya told Lo’ak that Quaritch has his sisters but he knew he couldn’t go back right now since they had to get Neteyam to a safe place.
Lo’ak saw his father land on a big rock he called out to him saying Neteyam was hurt. Jake quickly saw they and Neteyam wounded so he waited until they got to him. Y/N and Lo’ak helped Jake get Neteyam onto the stone and out of the water. As the boys stood around Neteyam and helped him Y/N stood back with Tsireya. When Neytiri showed up after Jake called for her Y/N already had tears rolling down her face. It was breaking her heart looking at Neteyam in pain and hearing with voice get weaker and weaker. She was hoping that Neteyam was going to be okay but sadly their wasn’t enough hope.
Neteyam died in front of everyone. As Neytiri screamed out her son’s name everyone had tears rolling down their faces. Y/N immediately felt emptiness. When Neteyam told her that they belong together she actually believed it.
She felt like the stars were rewritten but they weren’t and she again felt like her hands were tied.

To You He Feels Like Home
You were always wild, even as a young child. Part of that could be attributed to who was raising you, how you were being raised, and part of it was because of your personality. It came down to nurture versus nature, or nurture and nature.
You were wild by nurture, raised by the Great Mother, by her forest, and by the animals that inhabited it. In particular there was a mother palulukan who had taken you into her den with her two cubs. She was your protector, your teacher, your mother. She loved you, and that was all you needed.
You were wild by nature, always bouncing around, never able to sit still. You were fierce and strong, stubborn at times, and intelligent as could be, which you used to your advantage. It was good for your survival, but exhausting to your mother palulukan, and the other animals who had taken you under their wings to teach you different survival skills.
They had all had a part in your upbringing, every animal teaching you something different. Their lessons had turned you into the woman you were today, they had taught you how to survive, and not just that, but how to thrive.
The palulukan had taught you to fight, how to attack and pounce, and win. She had taught you to protect yourself in any situation. She had taught you that no matter how small you were, how weak you may seem to your opponent, that there would always be a way to come out on top.
The syaksyuk had taught you how to swing from tree to tree, how to escape from harm's way quickly, may you choose not to fight. They taught you about community and how to work together to get to your goal.
The yerik had taught you how to scare off predators, and if that didn’t work how to run, how to pace yourself and run for longer than you thought you could. They taught you to stay calm, to not let fear overtake you as you ran.
The nantang made sure you knew how to hunt, how to stalk then attack and finish off your prey. They made sure you could feed yourself. They made you work in a team, to take everyone's different skills into account.
The ikrans that visited from the mountains taught you how to navigate the air, although you could only do so with their help. They would show you how different different parts of the land were. They showed you what you and your family of creatures looked from above.
Your upbringing was untraditional and many Na’vi would question how you had even survived, but you knew how. There was a sense of community in your animal family that could never be rivaled. You wouldn't have it any other way.
Of course there were still things you had to teach yourself, like weaving and making clothes. This had taken some trial and error as you had started as a very young child, needing to form this skill for more protection against the elements and the forest. You had figured it out later than you would have liked, but eventually you got there and had created your own outfits.
Then you had to teach yourself how to make weapons, and how to use them. You had mastered making spears out of branches when you were young, and quickly moved on to finding hard enough materials to make knives and other blades. When your mother palulukan had noticed your proficiency of making weapons she had started bringing back lost Na’vi weapons like bows and hunting knives.
After lots of trials and errors, from carving the body wrong to tying the sting wrong, you had mastered making a bow. You had found the perfect type of wood, strong enough to hold up, but soft enough to carve. You had found the perfect string made from woven plant fibers. When you carved your final masterpiece the curve of the wood was perfect and the string strung tightly enough to work perfectly.
Then came using it. You had never seen anyone use one, and your mother palulukan refused to let you anywhere near other Na’vi, so you struggled. You had tried over, and over, and over again, and eventually it paid off. Your stance was wrong to most, strange looking to others, but it worked perfectly for you.
With all of your combined skills, ones the animals of Pandora had taught you and ones you had taught yourself, you had become a lethal hunter. Once you proved yourself capable your mother palulukan let you off on your own.
At the age of eighteen years you had been sent free, allowed to explore as you wanted, and so you did. You ran through the forest with excitement coursing through your veins. You climbed and swung from tree to tree without a care for your safety. You swam in streams and shook the water from your loose hair as you resurfaced. You hunted for your own food, coming up successful every time.
You felt free.
You had been so used to your mother palulukan hunting for you that doing it on your own was enthralling. It gave you a rush unlike any other, but you never took more than you and your family could eat, dragging it back home to your palulukan family’s den.
Your little family had never eaten like this before. They had never had a meal every day, sometimes going as many as five days without food, instead giving leftovers to you, the little Na’vi they had taken in who needed it more than they did. Now you made sure they were fed daily, you took care of them like they had you.
As much as you loved the takedown of your prey, your favorite part of hunting was the stalking. You loved tracking things, finding a scent trail and following it until you found prints in the ground. You loved watching the prey once you found it, staying hidden in the shadows and observing.
Sometimes you would even track when you weren’t hunting, practicing for later or simply wanting to observe the other animals of the forest. You especially loved watching the nantang packs as they were similar to your family but also so different.
Today had been no different, you had been out searching for the trail of a nantang pack wanting to watch and observe. However that plan changed when you caught a whiff of something you had never smelled before. It reminded you of something, yourself, but you didn’t know why.
You couldn’t help but do what you do best, stalk. You followed the scent, staying close to the ground, slinking around, and watching the dirt for prints from any type of animal. When the trail stopped and there were no prints in sight you were confused, where had it gone, you questioned.
Then it hit you, the trees, it had to be in the trees. You weren’t in the mood to climb right now, not wanting a chase in the trees, but you might not have a choice. You took a breath, steadying and readying yourself, slowly looking up to the trees to see what you would be chasing, and once you caught sight of what it was you gasped.
It was you, not quite, but something like you.
He had your blue skin, stripes laid across his skin and white freckles splattered across his body and face. He had your dark hair, but his was put up in braids, something you had no idea you could do. He had your large golden eyes which were widened just like yours right now.
You were perplexed. You knew you weren’t the same as your family, you knew you looked completely different, not the same species, but you hadn’t ever seen another person like you. You didn’t know there were other people like you.
The other person looked just as shocked as you, and he was. You looked Omaticaya, but he had never seen you before, and he had seen everyone in his clan as the next Olo’eyktan in training. He hoped you weren’t Omaticaya because of how rough of shape you were in. He never wanted anyone in his clan to be in this rough of shape.
You had scapes all over your body, little scars scattered where past cuts had been. Your hair was loose and messy, knotted and in need of a good brush and braid. As he studied the strange girl in front of him he was concerned for you, for the state you were in, but to you the unkempt hair and scars and nicks that cover your body are normal.
To you they feel like home.
To you the scrapes and scars, the cuts and nicks, feel like home. They feel like the forest as you run through the underbrush, barely dodging trees and roughly catching your arms against them accidentally. They feel like jumping into streams and rivers, scraping your knees on the rocks at the bottom as the current sweeps you off your feet. They feel like hunting as you accidentally catch your finger with your blade as you finish off your prey.
To him they were worrying, they showed pain and danger, but to you that was normal, pain and danger were regular parts of your life. To him it wasn’t, and he felt the need to make sure you were okay. You were standing strongly so clearly you weren’t too injured, but the idea of you being one of his people made him feel the need to check you over, to help you.
He jumped down from his hiding spot, gracefully landing in front of you, and suddenly you took off. You sprinted away, terrified of the stranger. You wanted to make your way back home, back to your mother palulukan and the den you called home. You wanted to be safe, you wanted to feel safe.
The man lagged for a second, thinking, before deciding to follow you, taking off after you. The chase went on for a while, his lungs burned as he kept up with you, close behind, but he didn’t know how much longer he could keep up, and you didn’t seem to be slowing down.
“Wait, I just want to help!” He shouted after you, but that seemed to spook you more and you sped up.
You had no idea what the strange man had said, but his loud voice scared you. The sounds he was making were foreign to you, and it frightened you. He was communicating in a way you never had before. The way you communicated with your family was hisses and growls.
You were a good runner, had good stamina, but he seemed to be keeping up, although you could tell he was getting tired. The unfortunate part was you were getting tired too, and you would have to stop soon. You figured it would be good to stop sooner than later so you had enough energy to fight in case the need arose.
You saw a clearing to the right and zagged that way before stopping on the far end of it, crouched down like a palulukan, ready to pounce. The man stopped on the other side, hands on his knees as he caught his breath. Like this he looked less scary, he looked weak as he was out of breath, like you could win this fight easily.
He looked at you through the braids that had fallen in his face, and his eyes held no malice. He wanted you to feel safe, or as safe as possible, around him, so he showed his weakness as he was out of breath. He wanted you to know he wasn’t going to hurt you as he showed you had easily outran him.
However you still felt threatened.
Your eyes were blown wide, adrenaline coursing through you as your mind ran a mile a minute. Your ears pinned against your head and you let out a wild hiss at the man, bearing your teeth and snapping them together a few times as a threat.
He didn’t challenge you back, instead dropping to the ground to sit with his legs crossed, arms in the air as a sign of surrender, or peace, that he meant no harm. He tried to make himself look harmless, tried to make himself look smaller.
Your face scrunched up in confusion, why wasn’t he challenging you, you asked yourself. You weren’t convinced he meant to harm You couldn’t let your guard down, and your hand flew to your knife at your hip as you snarled at him, trying to elicit a reaction.
He then realized he had his own weapons on him and he lifted his bow over his head from where it rested against him, and threw it to the side. He hesitated as he took his knife out of its holder, but he threw it next to his bow a few feet away.
“They're gone, okay.” He pointed to the weapons where they laid, “I want to help you. I’m not going to hurt you.” He tried to explain.
Again you didn’t understand him, ears twitching at the unfamiliar sounds. Now you were more stressed than before. You stayed in place, ears pinned to your head again as you growled, but your hand moved away from your knife.
“There we go.” He spoke as your hand fell to your side, “What's your name?” He asked.
You felt the adrenaline wearing off, exhaustion starting to catch up to you and making you less hostile than before, blurring the lines of your fear. Your eyes were narrowed as your head tilted to the side, a questioning look on your face. You were scared because you couldn’t understand him, but you became more curious the more he spoke.
His voice was interesting, smooth and calming. You hadn’t heard anything like it before, and although you looked similar you weren’t sure if you could make the same sounds as him, accustomed to growls and hisses.
When you didn’t say anything back the man tried something different. He pointed to himself, “Neteyam.” Then he pointed to you, humming, “Hm?”
You growled back, trying to communicate the only way you knew how. He just cringed, taking it as aggressive while you were simply trying to voice your confusion.
He tried again, “Neteyam…” He pointed to himself, not saying anything else afterwards.
“Neteyam.” You whispered, only loud enough for you to hear. Then you cleared your throat, “Neteyam.” You parroted.
“Yes. Neteyam.” He nodded, happy you seemed to be getting somewhere, “You?” He asked, pointing to you.
“Hm?” You hummed, copying the noise he had made to you earlier. You thought it was a questioning sound, and you hoped your assumption was correct.
Something clicked to Neteyam, “You can’t understand me, can you?” He asked, not particularly expecting an answer.
“Hm?” You questioned again.
“Okay…” He took a second to think. Who were you? Where did you come from?
“Neteyam.” You spoke again, getting his attention. You then pointed to yourself and growled, you seemed to be trying to communicate something, and you were. You had growled your name, what your palulukan family called you.
He didn’t quite understand you, “Hm?” He asked.
You just growled again, pointing to yourself. Clearly this wasn’t getting anywhere.
“I’m going to give you a name, or a nickname I guess.” He told you, but you didn’t understand. If you had known what he had said you would have disagreed adamantly, you don’t need a different name, you have one already, but you didn’t understand, so when he pointed to you and said, “(Y/n).” The name sounded beautiful, and you loved the way it rolled off his tongue.
Your head tilted to the side, confusion written on your face, but you didn’t protest. Instead you nodded your head, seeming content, “Neteyam.” You pointed to him, “(Y/n), hm?” You pointed to yourself questioningly.
He smiled, “Yes.”
“Yes.” You copied him, but you weren’t smiling, still confused by the foreign words.
He patted the ground in front of him, inviting you to sit by him, but you don’t approach, instead sitting where you were a few feet away. He seems so calm, so relaxed, as he sits with his legs crossed and arms behind his as he leans on them. You however are stiff, skittish, as you sit on your knees, hands in your lap. You looked ready to take off at any second.
Neteyam tried to calm you down with reassuring words, even though he knew you couldn’t understand him, his calm tone seemed to take off the edge. You were scared of him, but slowly starting to believe he meant no harm. He wasn’t dangerous.
As you sat there with him he went on, and on, talking about whatever came to mind with that smooth tone. You could sit there and listen to him talk forever, but soon the sky is darkening and you realize it is time to head back home, to the comfort of your den, your mother would be waiting for you when you get there. She would be ready to allow you to cuddle up next to her and let go of the stress of today.
You’re not frantic when you stand up, instead more fixed on having a mission, to get home, but Neteyam doesn’t understand that, and so he stands up after you. You don’t pay him any mind until you start walking away and he follows you. Frustrated that he’s trying to follow you, you hold your hand out towards him, hissing.
“No!” You shout, a word you had picked up from Neteyam talking to you.
“Oh.” Neteyam simply comments. You were a quick learner apparently, picking up on the word and figuring out how to use it already.
You turn away and start walking off, and this time he doesn’t follow you, waving towards you and saying, “Goodbye, (Y/n).” He pauses before saying quieter, “I hope I see you again.” Not loud enough for you to hear.
Your mother palulukan was confused that night when you came home without a meal, but when you broke down in tears she moved to comfort you. You let out all of the stress from over the past few hours in tears and sobs, and eventually you stilled, fell asleep on her large warm body, and finally you rested.
You had intended to never see Neteyam again, but you kept running into him. It was frustrating and confusing. You had no idea why it kept happening, but of course you knew Eywa had a plan for everyone, and everything happens for a reason, but you weren’t sure why she was so insistent on putting you and Neteyam together.
The day after your first encounter you had your second meeting. You had been trying to hunt when you somehow ended up back at the clearing. You weren’t sure how you ended up there, but you gave in, sitting with him for a while before continuing your hunt.
The third time, the third day in a row now, you had been napping in a completely different area of the forest when you woke up to Neteyam looking at you curiously. It wasn’t necessarily in a creepy way, but it had spooked you at first before you calmed down. This time you did not stick around, walking off with a dismissive grunt to Neteyam.
The fourth time, a few days later, he had found you while you had been frolicking around in the Hallelujah Mountains. You had been hiding out there, trying to avoid him by not even being in the forest, but he had found you again somehow.
That went on, and on, until you admitted defeat, accepted your fate, Eywa was determined to have you and Neteyam together, and who were you to deny the Great Mother’s will. She knew all, and you trusted her, so you took her lead.
Every time you ran into Neteyam you would spend a little more time with him, and eventually that time built into hours, and then days, from sunrise to sunset you would spend your hours with him. You cherished your time with Neteyam and he certainly enjoyed your company, your attention.
Your palulukan mother was less than pleased with how much time you were spending with the Na’vi boy, but she understood you needed companionship with your own kind. She figured you would grow curious eventually and would venture out in search of people like you, and she was proud of you for making a friend, but she wished you would be home a little more.
When you finally gave into spending time with Neteyam you figured you should learn how to communicate, learn to speak his language. You would much rather teach him yours, but yours was more general emotions and less words, less actual conversation and more communicating how you're feeling through growls and hisses, hunched shoulders and bared teeth.
Today you were sitting by a river, somewhere Neteyam had shown you, as he tried to teach you the Na’vi language.
Neteyam pointed to different features on his face as you named them quietly, touching them on your own face as you went, “Ears. Eyes. Nose. Mouth.”
“Good job!” He praised you, a smile on both of your faces.
You were learning slowly, struggling to pick up a second language so much different from your first, but when you grasped a certain word you had it for good. You had started using the words you knew in basic sentences like “How you?” when you would first see him. You would listen intently as if you knew everything he was saying although you only picked up on certain words.
What really got Neteyam was when you would say goodbye when you parted ways at the end of the day. Instead of saying “Goodbye.” or something similar you would blurt out “Love you!” as you walked away.
It always got Neteyam’s heart beating in his chest, hard, and he couldn’t help but smile every time. He would say, “Goodbye (Y/n). Love you too.” because the one time he hadn’t reciprocated you had pouted and nearly cried.
He didn’t think you understood the significance of those words, of the word love, but you definitely did. You didn’t use it lightly, it being the only word you had learned to describe how you were feeling for Neteyam, and it described your feelings perfectly.
You truly did love him, as a friend, maybe more.
You appreciated what he did for you, but it went so much deeper than that. You loved how he was patient with you, giving you all the time you needed. You loved his voice, how he would talk to you even if you didn’t understand. You loved how he laughed, how he smiled, how his eyes seemed to glow when he was around you.
You love him.
You loved him like you loved the forest, it’s green foliage keeping you safe throughout your life. You loved him like you loved your mother palulukan, like a warm hug at the end of the day. You loved him like you loved the sounds that played all around you constantly, drowning out your negative thoughts.
You love him like home.
As you were mulling over your feelings, thinking whatever came to your mind, you had been zoning out, gone silent as you looked off into the distance. Neteyam took this chance to mess with you a little. He scooped up some water from the stream in his hands and threw it on you, bringing you out of your thoughts as the cool water hit your face.
You gasped, “Neteyam!”
He just laughed, pointing at you as your jaw was dropped, brow muscles raised, and eyes open wide. Your look of offense amused him and your look quickly switched to a scowl, and Neteyam felt himself still, that was never a good look on you.
You moved quickly, smiling mischievously splashing water onto him too. He looked surprised, like he hadn’t expected this from you, and you used that to your advantage, splashing him again, harder this time, with more water.
This time he was quick to move, trying to grab you and throw you into the deeper part of the river, but your reflexes were faster than him and you got up, running away like a mad woman. You smiled before jumping into the river, submerging your lower body before he could do it for you.
You thought hard, trying to form a coherent sentence, when you thought you had it you shouted, “Come get me!” Taunting him.
As you taunted him he just smiled, a sense of childish joy overcoming him. It reminded him of when he was younger. When he and his siblings would play in streams closer to home. When his father would play with them. It reminded him of family, you were quickly becoming family, but in a deeper way.
He loved you like family, he loved you like a calm afternoon at home with everyone sitting around, talking and playing games. He loved you like a partner, someone to share his own home with, where his family could come over for dinner and share stories. He loved you like someone new to the family, like someone his family could learn to love.
He loves you.
“Oh yeah?” Neteyam asked, smirking at you. He stayed where we was on the river bank, feet barely in the water.
“Yeah!” You shouted, challenging him by splashing the water around you.
He seemed to be contemplating it, over exaggerating his movements dramatically, “I don’t know… I might just stay here…” He joked.
You frowned, not understanding his joking tone of voice, “Fine…” You turned away from him, getting ready to leave the river.
However you didn’t get the chance when you heard splashing behind you, and it was too late. He ran up to you splashing you, getting your entire back wet, including your hair.
You whipped around, gasping both at the cold water and the shock of not expecting it. You shouted at him, arms crossed over your chest, “Rude!”
Neteyam laughs loudly, “Oh I’m rude? You’re the one who told me to come get you.” He defended himself, rolling his eyes.
“You…” You thought of what word to use, not sure what the word for this action was, you settled on, “hit me first!”
Neteyam was quick to correct you, “Splash, the word is splash.” He really did not want you telling people he was hitting you if you ever met his clan. He hoped it was less of an if, and more of a when.
You took in the information, “You splash me first.” You shrugged your shoulders, feeling you won the conversation.
“And I’ll do it again!” Neteyam laughed, running at you, ready to throw more water in your face, but you turned to run away from his attack.
As you were running you slipped, falling to your knees and feeling pain shoot through one of them, “Ow.” You hissed out.
Neteyam was quick to rush to your side, helping you up and walking you to the edge of the river where you sat down. You inspected the cut, it wasn’t much and you would be okay in a day or so, “I am okay.” You tried to assure Neteyam.
Neteyam frowned, “I’m sorry. Let me fix you up?” He asked.
You knew if you said no he would practically beg you to let him help you, so you gave in, “Okay.”
Neteyam sat down, pulling your leg over his lap so he had better access to your knee. He inspected the small wound, thinking about what Kiri had told him would be best for it.
He was quick to pull out the little pouch of healing equipment he had, herbs and plants, pastes and drinks, he was equipped for anything. He had decided to carry anything he would need to treat your small cuts and scrapes because every time you would see him you would have more and more. They never seemed to stop coming, so he promised he would do his best to help you.
He pulled out a paste you recognized, and before he could speak you mocked him, attempting to copy his voice, “This one will sting.” You fell into a fit of giggles afterwards.
He just chuckled at you, “You’re right.” You seemed to always be right, you picked up on other things, besides learning the Na’vi language, easily.
You smiled, sighing happily, “I know.”
Neteyam hums, smiling at you , “Tell me, how have you been? What have you done today?” He tried to distract you while he put the paste on.
It worked as you quickly responded, “It has been great. I have gotten to see you…” You trailed off, smiling shyly, before continuing, “This morning I went on a hunt, took food home to my mom. My siblings are moving out finally, so it is just us now. Less mouths to feed.”
“Good… Neteyam answered simply, focusing on what he was doing as he wrapped a bandage around your knee.
“Thank you.” You pulled his face up to look at you, a small smile was on your face, lips gently curved, eyes softened to liquid gold, “For everything.”
He sighed, content, as his face melted into your hand, pressing your skin to his, “It’s really no big deal. I would do anything for you. I would get you anything you need, anything you want.” He admitted softly, quietly.
You smiled, leaning in and pressing your forehead to his, “I know, and Eywa do I love it. I love you.”
He smiles back, the happiness reaching his eyes, and if you listen close enough you can hear his heart thumping in his chest, ready to pop out, “I love you too, (Y/n). I see you, and I will show you that every day.
Every time he tends to your wounds he is so careful, he is so careful with you. He is careful in a way the forest has never been, in a way it never will be in the future. The forest gives you safety in the form of protection through the hard and marred skin you have covering your body. The forest shows you its love through injuries you’ve sustained from your years of survival, it gives you love by allowing you to survive.
Now you don’t need the love of the forest, you need the love of him. He feels like scars, and bruises, and cuts, and pain. He feels like safety. Like how you once had found safety and solace in the cuts and bruises you bared, how your unkempt hair and scars felt like your home, to you he feels like home.

now this time, neteyam holding back from fucking you stupid but you’re too snarky and it ends up him really fucking you stupid? of course. — i want to cry bcs i love him ):
warnings : obviously smut, making love to slight rough fucking, multi-tasker neteyam, p in v, p penetration, pecks and kisses, teyam is puthy whipped, breeding kink if you squint, suggestive fluff moment in the end.
Tumblr media
“you’re holding back.”
of course he is. neteyam is trying to stop himself from completely fucking you open and you telling him this was clearly not helping at all.
his face was damp, brows knit and braids with prettiest beads swaying when he fucked himself in you. neteyam tries to focus on not cumming before you, wanting to chase your release before his. “shh,” he hushes you, too afraid he won’t be able to make it with your broken voice, “need you to be quiet fr'me right now.”
but you were just far from quiet. he knows you love to tease him, be a little minx sometimes that he just can’t help but enjoy.
“you confuted yourself, teyam,” you breathily say.
your mate just groans, balancing himself on top of you by trapping your head with his hefty arms. “you think so?” he rolls his hips into you and you press your head back to the pillowy material below you.
“hm,” he hears you hum. “you said you were gonna fuck me stupid.” you remind him and feel your heart tighten when he chuckles. “and now you’re just making love to me.” he knows you like it rough, he just wanted to get a grip over himself.
“can’t i do both?” he distracts you, one hand sliding to your curves before he caresses your freckle painted hips.
“i don’t know, can you?” you smile, eyes fluttered shut when his cock propelled into your saturated cunt. neteyam swallows his spit, slightly feeling his ego bruising. he’s a perfect mate for a reason.
“y’know if you just want me to fuck you dump…” your breath quickens when neteyam sat on his heels. this is it, this is what you wanted and your inside coils just thinking of him ruining you. “what?” you sigh, chest heaving with adrenaline.
“you could’ve just said,” his every move was calculated. neteyam pushes your legs further apart and spreads you open, exposing your slick nectar. “‘want you to fuck me stupid, nete.’” your breath got stuck when he looked straight to your eyes, his being dark yet amber-like glowing under the eclipse.
that’s when you knew the man who was trying not to get ahead of himself was gone. completely gone.
neteyam pulls you rough to meet his thrust, plunged deep in you just to be drawing back out of your cunt. your mewl is high pitched, causing his ears to shift angels and flatten. “fuck.” he howls, feeling your warm walls clamping against his angry head.
your mouth flew open, shockwave washing over you. the pleasure he was giving traveled all over your skin that you felt you’re drunk to the brim. the man above you just drilled into you, the feeling of your nails digging into his wrist that were pressing you down to the mattress.
you didn’t notice how close he leaned until a soft kiss was placed on your cheek. “is this what you wanted?” he lifts your hips up which helps him sink deeper. “c’mon princess, this is what you want? me to fuck yo– fucking h...” he can feel you, he feels you. neteyam feels you and it feels so good.
you’re confident with your snarky responses and he found it hot. neteyam found everything hot about you but now you’re completely mushed up with his dick drilling into you and he knows you’re not satisfied yet.
“you’re not happy.” he tells you, it was obvious he had that cocky grin on his face. “want me to go faster, baby?” and he watches you nod, desperate and needy.
neteyam nodded, clicking his tongue before he sat up on his heels again. if you want it harder, then he will fuck you harder. you’re out of breath when he brought one of your legs by his waist while the other got pushed up to your chest.
“wait, net—!” you can’t even say a word when he hammers into you like an animal, full spread and energy filled. “like this?” neteyam tilts his head to the side, observing your twisted face.
“you want it like this?” he groaned, still pounding.
“yes.” you keened, “like that.” a bead of sweat rolling down your temple. “just like that.” you huffed.
you know you’re getting louder and so you bring your hand to cover your mouth, blocking the choked moan you’re voicing out. “no, don’t do that.” you feel a large hand pulling your hand from your face and greeted with a glare. “don’t cover yourself from me.”
your inside felt like it was burning, peak reaching and cool about to snap. you shake your head, eyes fluttering open to give your mate a pleading gaze. “you. are. cumming.” he mouths you, as if he's demanding for your release.
he tilted your pelvis one more and you knew it was over. you saw stars, your back arching from the mattress until the coil in you snapped causing your heat to spasm on neteyam’s.
left hand pulling on the bed sheet while the other slightly pushed neteyam by his pubic bone.
“don’t push me and take it, you wanted me to fuck you stupid remember?” you bring your head up, giving him a glare but his face said that only he did not care but he was proud of it too. his braids lying on his shoulder gracefully.
neteyam didn’t take much time either, eyes trained on the bouncing of your swelled tits. he was hooded and wanted to get to the finish line and so you helped him. “don’t hold back.” your voice was muffled at first.
“nete’” you purr at him, “don’t hold back.” you repeat and watch his pupil blowing wider. “you want me to cum?” he softly keens and you don’t hesitate when you nod, “please.” you practically beg and watch your man curse under his breath.
his long steady rolls were now deeper, casting your gummy walls and edging himself further. “in you?” he leans to nudge your nose, he wants to know if you’re comfortable with him doing that and his chest flicks with a tint of happiness when you nod, claiming you want all of him in you.
eventually everything came to an end; you moaning his name and accepting the torment he was giving you. his breath was ecstatic and shorter. “kiss me.” he says and you fulfill his wish, taking his lips in yours.
and it was hot. his load was heavy and warm when he painted your walls inside. fucking every drop of his seeds into you.
neteyam’s nose flared, calming himself with deep breaths as he braced himself on top of you. the sudden voice of yours pulls him back to reality.
“i won.” you giggle, fingers reading imaginary lines on his skin. “won what?” he was slightly confused at first. “i won with making you cum.” you say and he laughs, neteyam laughs.
“princess, i made you come first and you think you’re the one who won?” you were quick to defend yourself, you loved these types of post-sex arguments— which of course was not serious —. “but i still made yo—“ he pecks your lips, cutting you off.
“yeah and i never said i was holding back.” you stifle a laugh when he peepers kisses all over your face. “shut up!” your shoulder slacked in defeat but neteyam only laughed between kisses.
this were the moment you always wish eywa would never take away from you.

Making out till their queues are basically connecting without them having to put them together. I imagine it would be so intense.‟
A/N: Request written by anon. I hope that I have conveyed the behaviors and habits of the character well and you will enjoy reading it. Please remember english is not my native language, mistakes may occur. The work includes smut ,minors do not interact.

He couldn't stop staring at her, he wasn't able to.
When she got out of the water, she intoxicated him with herself, with her long ,thick hair that cascaded down her back, with her hands that she lifted up exposing her body even more and with the way her eyes closed again and again in a surprisingly sensual way.
But he wasn't the only one watching.
Her eyes, though only slightly open, saw Neteyam's actions. But like him, she just stared, making no other move. This type of dancing was all too familiar to na’vi’s because none of them wanted to do anything about it.
Till this day.
Because they were alone, Y/n wasn't afraid of the onlookers as she decided to turn around and go in a direction only she knew, just to stop and turn her head towards the boy. Her fingers beckoning him to her before moving again forward, knowing that he would obey her silent command without a word of objection.
Neteyam, enchanted, moved towards her, almost running to reach the girl who had so effectively befuddled his senses just as he had unknowingly befuddled hers.
-Where are we going? - he asked from behind her, but the only answer was a mysterious smile from her - Come on, don't play with me like that - he added, trying to grab her tail, but she escaped him at the last moment, turning to face him without stopping walking.
-It's you who decided to follow me - she pointed out playfully, nudging him with her tail, which he tried to grab a moment ago - We are currently going ahead, my Nete.
-I noticed that - he replied, rolling his eyes slightly, unable to stop smiling after hearing how she called him - You won't tell me, don't you?
-It's called a surprise - she stated, spinning around him in a frolicsome manner, still nudging him gently - I think you'll like it - she confessed more quietly, looking at him from under thick eyelashes, driving him crazy - Come on, my Nete, it's not far.
As she spoke, she grabbed his larger palm, dragging him behind her. Neteyam allowed himself to be led without objection, feeling pleasant warmth spreading over his body, when in his field of vision he could see their joined hands.
-So that's what you wanted to show me? - he asked, entering the cave with her.
-Not that, but what's at the end - she replied, releasing his arm to his dismay - Catch me if you can, my Nete - she added before fleeing as fast as a gust of wind.
It was as if they were children again. Chasing around the forest for an unknown purpose, for satisfaction unknown to anyone. But now they were older and the chase turned into something significant, something primal and the boy was ready to chase her even to the edge of the world, just to catch her in his arms. But just when he thought he had her, she disappeared around the corner, and he lost her completely from his sight.
-Y/n - he called, but got no response - I swear to Eywa that you will be death to me - he muttered, going even deeper until he reached the second exit, which faced the ocean.
The girl watched him in the shadows, waiting for him to pass by before she silently followed him, after a while grabbing his shoulders, gliding her lips over his ear.
-I see you - she whispered before kissing the skin on his neck to his surprise, sending shivers down his body.
He turned his head towards her, afraid that it was a cruel joke but she looked at him lovingly, thus soothing his nerves.
Her sudden movement startled him, but the desire was greater and in the next moment, his hands were on her hips, pulling her towards him. His golden eyes traced the structure of her face. The way her yellow eyes stared at him, the way their pupils dilated, or the way white marks began to appear on her face from the darkness that surrounded them.
-You're beautiful - he said, sincerity oozing out of his words.
-You look at me so that I dare not doubt, my Nete - she replied, rubbing her cheek against his.
-Cause I've got my mind on you - he added as an excuse, closing his eyes.
-And I've got my mind on you - she said softly, gliding her lips over his, slowly, gently, intimately.
They both drowned in each other. In their touches, in emotions that they denied for too long. The feeling of wet lips and tongues rubbing against each other was so intense that the couple tried to get closer, practically melting into one. Their moans grew louder with each passing moment, and each subsequent close-up, while their hands wandered in a desperate act, trying to memorize every bit of the other's skin with just their fingers.
-My Nete - she whimpered surprisingly loudly.
The boy looked at her from above, noticing only then what a mess they had become. Their clothes were rumpled, their skin marked, their hair disheveled and sometimes untangled from their braids, while their kuru practically fused together. They were so close yet so far.
-Y/n - he began, but fell silent as the girl's torso rose up and their breaths mingled with each other.
-Connect them, my Nete. Make us one - she whispered, all the while looking into his eyes the color of liquid honey.
He couldn't say no, he just couldn't, he didn't want to. So he did as she asked. It didn't take much, just a light move, and the braids fully joined together, making a mates out of them.
The connection was something unfamiliar to both of them, something almost forbidden by how right and good it was. Their bodies trembled, flooded with pleasant warmth and an erotic sensation never experienced by either of them.
Neteyam's instincts started working for him. His hands, as if ruled by something foreign, slid down to the girl's waist, carefully removing the material from her body, revealing her womanhood. Only by looking at the naked flower of her femininity did he realize how he exposed her, but before he could ask, Y/n's legs spread involuntarily wider, inviting him.
Bringing his face closer to her clit, his ears involuntarily twitched, feeling her sweet scent enter his nostrils. His tongue slowly moved along her labia, collecting the fluid that had accumulated on them, and hearing the golden-eyed na'vi groans of satisfaction, he repeated this action, getting addicted to the feeling of being between her legs, feasting on the hidden source.
-My Nete - she moaned, not knowing what is what anymore, her orgasm mixed with the feeling of tsaheylu, creating a feeling of haze and thirst on her mind.
-How do you feel? - Neteyam asked softly, kissing her belly, the valley between her breasts, and finally her neck.
-Amazing - she confessed, knowing exactly that she wasn't the only one who felt pleasure, not when they were joined - How did you know what to do? - she asked, unable to stop herself.
-I just knew - he answered quickly, not wanting to admit about discovering the strange Earth books he had found with Lo'ak and Spider - How did you know what I was doing? - he said, trying to distract attention from himself.
The girl smiled innocently, nudging his thigh with her leg.
-I explored - she confessed, looking into his eyes - When you mature you are curious about your body, it's natural. Haven't you ever been curious about exploring your body? - she asked, slowly placing her hands on his shoulder to pull herself up.
-No - he confessed quietly - I was too busy...
-Do you want me to explore your body for you? - she suggested, turning them so that she was on top - Do you want me to touch you, my Nete? - she whispered into his ear, rubbing her fingers against the manhood hidden behind his clothes.
-Yes - he choked out, feeling moans wanting to come out as Y/n's hand rubbed his member, carefully peeking behind the fabric to touch it fully.
-You made me feel so good - she remarked tenderly, kissing the skin on his shoulder - Let me hear you, please. There's no shame in showing how good you feel.
At these words, the boy's mouth opened to let out the sounds that wanted to flow from the depths of his throat. His hands gripped Y/n's thighs as she sensually moved up and down his shaft, occasionally running her thumb over the head. Her lips found their place on his, tasting herself unconsciously.
-Please put it inside - he said, panting - Please. I need you.
-Of course, my Nete - she replied, propping herself up for convenient access and positioning.
Neteyam held her close as she pushed him into her tight, hot canal. Their foreheads touched each other as breaths, whines, growls and moans mingled into one.
-So good, so perfect - he whispered, eyes closed, wiping their faces together.
-I love you - she said, sitting fully on him, calming her pounding heart.
-I love you - he repeated, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
Y/n waited a long time, getting used to the feeling of bulging and a slight burning sensation, before lazily moving her loins back and forth, left and right, and around, driving them crazy. He wanted to help, to take control, but the sight of his beloved above him, her face focused and full of pleasure, he could only watch, trying to remember every detail, begging to find a way to shut himself up in this moment now and forever.
Opening her eyes, the girl smiled slightly at the sight of Neteyam and the way he looked at her as if she were a goddess herself. Her movements gained strength, but not speed, keeping a slow and intimate pace.
Not a word was spoken but their eyes said it all and the connection made them aware that they were one. Their thoughts, heartbeats, everything flew between them like the most beautiful of paths.
-So close, my Nete - she whispered, holding his face in her hands - I want us to come together.
-We will. I promise - he replied, unexpectedly lifting his own hips up -Give me everything, my Y/n. I want everything from you - he purred into her mouth, feeling how after these sweet words the girl's insides tightened tighter if it was possible, almost preventing him from moving any further.
-My Nete - she whimpered as a feeling of familiar warmth flooded her body and a constellation appeared before her eyes.
Neteyam growled, reaching his climax with her as he said, burying her in his arms before collapsing to the ground beneath them, dragging the girl's tired body with him. In response, she snuggled into his torso, wrapping her tail around his leg as he did the same.
Their eyes involuntarily closed, and a calming darkness engulfed their minds, putting them into the arms of sleep and dreams while their bodies and hearts were still connected , forever as one.

The water is still in the night. Its chaos—violent waves that crash and collide—disappears once the darkness blankets over the sky. The surface of the water reflects the stars, small freckles of light in the face of the ocean. Although gentle tides push and pull, the vast sea is silent as it sleeps.
There is a beat to be heard; a pulse from under the water, under the ocean floor, from the very core of Pandora. A strong, mighty rhythm that shakes the ground. But this heartbeat does not come from the Great Mother.
In the quiet of the night, the reflection of the sky in the ocean is disrupted. Calloused fingers break through the barrier, reaching past the thin veil. He grasps the air like a rope. The crown of his head splits the sea in half. The moon pulls him to her; his body, strong and powerful, ascends.
──
It was his mother who pressed his eyes closed when they were void of life. The blank face of your lover glared into your soul. The grip he had on your hand--desperately clinging onto you like it would heal the hole in his heart--vanished, and you were left to imagine his fingers were still intertwined with yours.
You remember the wave of realization on his father's face, how his ears slightly dropped and his bottom lip quivered when he noticed that the bullet had gone straight through his eldest son's chest. Crimson collected in his shaking palms. You knew then that there was nothing to be done. Nothing except to sit next to Neteyam, your prince, as his soul moved onto the Great Mother.
His funeral was inevitable. After the war was over, it was time for the Suli's to say goodbye. You stayed with his brother, Lo'ak's hands placed in yours, as Neteyam slowly sank deeper towards the ocean floor. His frame became smaller and smaller, until he was completely engulfed by luminescent tendrils. Your lover was no more.
The family struggled to carry on without him. You remained close with his siblings, thankfully. Kiri mourned by your side. For a time, it had been just her and Neteyam. He was born less than a month before her and she considered him to be her twin. Tuk was young, but old enough to understand, “He is with Eywa”.
Lo'ak, however, was almost never to be seen. If you managed to catch a glimpse of him, he was silent and reclusive. He even ignored Tsireya, who asked you multiple times if he was alright; you never had an answer.
Despite your great loss, the village of Awa'atlu continued on. Every morning, the fishermen and farmers rose early, the healers prepared their supplies, and the hunters readied their ilus to dive through the sea.
Life continued on as if Neteyam's soul had never been ripped out of your blood-soaked hands, as if his eyes had never looked their last to you. It broke your heart.
──
Although Jake Suli had finally recognized his youngest son for his true potential, it was too late. Lo'ak put the blame for Neteyam's death on himself. He accepted that he would forever carry that weight with him, no matter where he ran to or hid.
You knew that when he was nowhere to be found, he was somewhere far off in the sea on Payakan's fin. He stayed out late and missed ceremonies and Suli family meetings; it was Neteyam who always pushed Lo'ak to participate. But even when he laid underneath the stars on the back of Payakan, the ocean water gently lapping at his skin, the guilt still sat in his chest like the bullet in Neteyam's heart.
Without his older brother, Lo'ak ceased to exist. He refused to meet his eyes or even speak to his mother. He made himself an outcast before his family could. You recognized that the void in Lo'ak's life was the same one tearing you apart, so you felt that it was your responsibility to look after him.
"We must be strong," Neteyam had told you the night you left your home in the forest. You said goodbye to your family to be with him. He'd placed his palm over your heart. "In here."
It was eerie how you could still feel his touch as if he were right in front of you. Neteyam would've wanted you to stay strong for Lo'ak, and you would do anything to honor your mighty warrior.
Unfortunately, looking after Lo'ak wasn't easy when you could never find him. Two days had passed and you hadn't seen him once. You knew not to worry--Kiri noticed your concern and said she'd seen him with his tulkun just outside of the reef. "He didn't seem like he wanted to come back."
By that night, you'd given up. After a great feast held for the birth of Tonowari and Ronal's child, you separated yourself from the others and sat alone on a far-off shore. The ocean life illuminated the darkness around you, small specks of teal and gold light scattered in the water. Your feet had sunk into the wet sand as the calm waves kissed your ankles.
While the ocean held many wonders that continued to fascinate you, it left a bitter image burned into your memory.
There was fire off in the distance, gunshots and explosions, but they were all the least of your concern. You shook as you held his body in your arms. The water had turned violent, as if the Great Mother knew of the war taking place. Sharp, chaotic waves crashed against a rocky landing. Crimson pooled in the grooves of the rock, running down the sides to where it diluted in the vast sea.
You never allowed yourself to remember anything past that. The ocean had not redeemed itself just yet. You pulled your knees to your chest so your feet were out of the water. The silence of the night would never be peaceful; if it was quiet enough, you could still hear his voice in your ear.
Fortunately, the silence broke. Soft footsteps in the sand were trailing towards you, and wide, golden eyes met your small frame. Lo'ak had not expected you so far away from the village, alone, at night. "(y/n)," he froze. "What're you doing here?"
"Lo'ak," you let out a breath of relief that you'd been holding for the past few days. You stood and brushed the sand off of your legs. "I've- We've been looking for you. Your mother and father have been so worried."
He frowned at the mention of his family--of his father. He refused to even imagine what they could possibly think of him. "I was just out," Lo'ak tried to dismiss the topic and swiftly walked past you, his shoulder barely brushing yours. "I'm fine."
The remnants of your heart cracked once again. Even when a hand reached out for him, grasping onto his fingertips, he'd pull away. The fear of rejection--the thought of placing his trust in someone with only betrayal in return--was too great. Lo'ak would abandon others before they could abandon him.
"Lo'ak, please." your hand gently grabbed his shoulder to turn him back to you. He stood a few inches over you and refused to look down to meet your eyes.
There was a soft spark in his chest, and you could see the flame beginning to grow. "What do you want, (y/n)?" He retorted with a sigh.
"You know what it is, Lo'ak." You brushed your hand down his arm to meet his palm. You placed his own hand on top of his heart. He sighed, breath laced with heavy regret and guilt. Lo'ak knew that whatever he'd been hiding for the past few months would be coming up right there in front of you.
He practically collapsed onto the sand, feet set in the water and arms wrapped around his legs, but he quickly pulled himself away from the shore, just like you had earlier, once the memories began to feel too real. You sat right by his side and looked off to the dark horizon. The two of you stared with broken hearts. "Have you gone to see him?"
There was silence, apart from the gentle lapping of the waves and the village in the distance. "No," he regretfully looked down at his lap. "Have you?"
You shook your head, "No." Your response wasn't much better.
For as much as the two of you missed him, neither of you had gone to the Spirit Tree like the rest of the Suli family. The only images of Neteyam that you had left were the memories still burned into your vision. “I’m afraid to forget him,” Lo’ak admitted. He bit the inside of his cheek. “But I’m too scared to see him again.”
You looked to him with sympathetic eyes. For the first time since his brother’s death, Lo’ak broke. Three tears left a trail down his face to where they dropped off his skin and onto the sand. “I don’t know much about spirits,” you began. You set a firm, reassuring hand on Lo’ak’s shoulder. “But Neteyam loved us with all his heart. Even as he rests with the Great Mother, he loves us.”
He tried to nod along to your words as if he would better believe them. Lo’ak gently gasped before a quiet, broken sob left his throat, “I know it’s my fault.” His shoulders heaved. “If I hadn’t made him go back for Spider or- or if I stayed behind instead of him..”
“Oh, Lo’ak,” you cooed, turning towards him and engulfing him in a hug. He leaned his forehead down onto your shoulder. This was the first comfort he’d felt in months. “We can’t tell ourselves those things.”
His tears collected on your skin. “My brother,” he whimpered, “is gone.”
Your fingers gently caressed the back of his head, tracing over his braids. You shushed him, “There’s nothing we can do.” How could you affirm this to Lo’ak when you couldn’t even accept it yourself? You pulled away so you could look him in the eyes.
“I miss him too much.” Lo’ak wept.
Holding his face between your gentle hands, you nodded. Together, your tears soaked the sand beneath you; the two of you could’ve created an entire ocean. “I miss him, too, paskalin.” Your thumb soothed cheek and wiped away the tears from his eyes. “But we must stay strong for him.
“All we can do is remember. One day, we’ll be strong enough to see him, I know it. But for now, we must be strong,” You put your hand over his heart. The beat of his soul turned steady; you remembered how Neteyam’s slowed to a stop, and for the first time since his death, you pushed the memory away without a single tear. “In here.”
Lo’ak closed his eyes and calmed his breath, allowing the feeling of your palm on his skin to soothe him. He’d opened himself and poured out his heart. Now, he could heal.
The night continued on, and you stayed with Lo’ak throughout the dark reign. He could take however long he needed. You would comfort him through whatever war he created in his mind. The tide came in, brushing water against your knees, but the two of you remained.
Finally, he opened his eyes. “We should return to the village.” Before, Lo’ak spoke bluntly with a dismissive mask to cover how broken he truly was. Now, his voice was firm and strong.
“Are you sure?” You warned. He stood and you cautiously rode with him.
His hands, which had been balled in tense fists, released themselves. Lo’ak nodded, “I’ve been too focused on my brother that I’ve forgotten the rest of my family. Do you think they’ll forgive me?”
With a sweet, proud smile, you offered, "They already have."
──
The path back to the village was peaceful given that you and Lo'ak had come to terms with your grief. He had warned you that his parents would most likely be angry when you returned since it'd been hours since they'd last seen you and days since they'd seen him. You'd consoled him, "We'll get through it together."
It was strange that in Neteyam's absence, you and Lo'ak were able to replace the void with each other. Although he was only a year younger, you'd always felt a sisterly love for him, the same way that you felt for Kiri or Tuk. Now that your connection with Lo'ak had healed, maybe you could too.
Life ahead was beginning to look a little brighter in that moment as you walked on the shore.
But your peace was short-lived.
The village was close enough that you could see the pods, docks, and several Metkayina men with glowing lanterns that noticed you and Lo'ak approaching. They called out and, together, the two of you rushed to them.
"What is wrong?" Lo'ak prodded, trying to look past their broad shoulders at the commotion that was collecting in the village.
You tried as well but they were too tall compared to you. "You must come with us," one of the men said. The flames in the lanterns gently flickered but you could well enough see Kiri running in the distance. Her eyes were wide with fear like she'd seen a ghost.
"Kiri!" You exclaimed.
She pushed past the men and, out of breath, embraced Lo'ak. "Brother!" There were tears falling from her eyes, only you had expected her to happily cry at the sight of Lo'ak. Instead, she wept. "You must come. Come, (y/n)."
Kiri led you both back to the village, the men following after you to provide light. Almost every person in Awa'atlu--man, woman, young, and old--crowded near the shore. They yelled and gasped, cursing and praying. The three of you struggled to push past everyone, accidentally stepping on tails and toes and bumping elbows and shoulders.
Everyone seemed to look at you and Lo'ak with sympathy. Lo'ak sensed it as well, and looked just as confused as you were.
The crowd was like a hurricane, and in the center, the eye was calm. Jake and Neytiri kneeled on the ground, Tuk crying into her father's arm. Tonowari, Ao'nung, and a collection of soldiers held the people back. Ronal sat across from Neytiri, muttering a prayer with her eyes shut. Kiri ran to her mother's side. Tsireya rushed to Lo'ak as he collapsed.
Your heart stopped.
On the ground, where the ocean met the sand, a figure laid. He had strong legs and arms, a strapping abdomen, and calloused palms and fingers. There was a scar on the outside of his right thigh. Tanhì scattered across his body like the constellations reflected on the ocean.
Your prince. His ghost would forever haunt you. What had you done wrong? What had you done for the Great Mother to curse you like this? Just as you could feel your wounds beginning to heal, your heart crumbled again.
You fell to your knees, placing your hand over your mouth to cover the ear-splitting wail you released. You could fully see your Neteyam now. Just as you had remembered it, but his eyes were gently shut. Neytiri cried alongside you, and your heart almost broke even further until you heard her whisper, "Thank you, Great Mother. Thank you."
What was she grateful for? Jake noticed your confusion, and with a hopeful smile, he took your hand and placed it on Neteyam's heart. Underneath the weight of your palm, you felt a gentle pulse. A steady, soft rhythm that rocked your core. Your tears stopped, a cry stuck in your throat.
You looked down to his body and gasped. "Oeyä tìyawn," you whispered out to him, hoping he would hear it. Through just two words, your voice called out to him.
Golden eyes, that you thought you would never see again, opened.
His father gasped; his mother laughed; his sisters cheered, and his brother bowed with his forehead touching the ground. Neteyam's mighty heartbeat reached across Pandora.
"Ma 'Teyam," you smiled. You could taste your own tears as they reached the corners of your mouth. For the first time in months, you weren't crying from a split in your heart--you cried at the feeling of it healing. You were foolish to think the Great Mother would curse you. "Thank you, Great Mother."
Only two minutes had passed until you noticed the laughter and cheers of others had disappeared. The night had become silent again. Your smile fell when you recognized that Neteyam had not yet embraced you. In fact, he stayed frozen on the ground.
His eyes were still open, but they were wide and full of fear. Tuk reached for his hand, and he quickly pulled away with a scared gasp. He flinched when his own mother caressed his cheek. "Neteyam," she pleaded. Finally, his eyes met yours. You looked to him with desperate affection, practically shooting beams of love towards him. Your stomach dropped when you noticed it.
Your prince did not know who you were.

Periods were a foreign thing to the Na’vi. Not having them themselves made it hard to understand how bleeding for a week every month was natural.
Neteyam was no exception.
When he first heard about periods, it was from Norm of all people. It was no secret to the people of the lab that Neteyam was in love with [Name]. He often made it very obvious from the way he looks at [Name] like she is the only one that exists to the way he never seems to leave her side unless necessary. But because of all of this time Neteyam spends with [Name], he gets to see all sides of [Name]. Including the moments when the mood swings hit hard.
That was the first change that Neteyam noticed between her as a kid and in the recent years.
He didn’t notice it quite at first, hoping that [Name] was just having a bad day the times that she got snappy or would just cry over stupid things. But when she started crying over a flower having no leaves, despite that species having no natural leaves anyway, he finally wondered if something was wrong.
He then quickly took to observing [Name] as much as he could, more than he usually would if that were possible, and started to notice a pattern.
Every 28 eclipses or so, [Name] would start this cycle of apparent pain in her stomach, mood swings and increased sudden needs to use the washroom.
This really bugged Neteyam because he couldn’t understand why she was behaving like this. So he went to his father.
He father spoke quickly and casually, not fazed at all, telling him that it’s “that blood thing” and to go ask Norm.
Neteyam, in a state of panic over the word blood, rushes to Norm immediately.
Upon asking Norm, Neteyam finally learns about periods. And although it seems strange to him at first, he is determined to not let anything hurt his love.
The moment [Name] even mentions having cramps, Neteyam leaps into caring boyfriend mode.
Neteyam has a whole routine every time, and every time he is excited to help.
He starts with bringing [Name] back to the lab, he starts with cuddles as she waits out her cramps. Then he moves on to preparing her favourite foods and snacks so that she isn’t hungry. After that, Neteyam lets [Name] vent while she enjoys her food. Letting her express all of her emotions openly and comforting her where ever he can. And when [Name] gets tired, he makes sure that he stays holding her all night.
Neteyam always wants to make sure that [Name] feels the best, and although he doesn’t fully understand periods and he might never, he is always ready to help.

A/n: Sorry if it is short! I never know what to think about period fics! Anyway, thanks for reading! And I hoped you enjoyed! Also feel free to request! I love hearing them. Here is the request guidelines! <3333

Denial was the first stage of grief that one felt when trying to cope with trauma. At some point and time, everyone falls subjective to it. Finding ways to trick the mind to believe something other than the truth. When someone is in a state of denial they begin to suppress their emotions. They grow incapable of coming to terms with what is and what has happened. That’s the current state you resided in. In a cycle of trial and error. Attempting to process a sudden change, but then avoid doing so to neglect the pain you don’t want to endure. Rather, neglect the fact that Neteyam was gone. It’s crazy to think how only hours ago he was rescuing you from the ship. Telling you to run and get to safety, but you were willing to follow his skxawng ass anywhere. You got him back for a few minutes, it was only a few minutes you wished you’d have cherished longer.
You didn’t want to let go. You didn’t listen to him, didn’t flee, didn’t return home, and didn’t think that you were putting yourself in danger, not when he was still risking his own life. He had the habit, his prolonged responsibility to watch over his siblings, be there to guide them, protect them, but who was protecting him? Who was making sure that he was okay and that he was protected? You bore that pain. Wondering why you let him push you into the water, instead of grabbing his hand to jump with you. His struggling attempts to stay afloat haunt you. A bad nightmare that looms over you when you're trying to sleep and causes you to wake up alarmed. The thought leaves a foul taste in your mouth. It makes you shudder, makes you twitch in discomfort, especially when you recall the blood that dyed the ocean red. His blood coated your cerulean hands. His death wasn’t one you wanted to accept so easily.
Not as you helped pull the leaf you placed him on, out into the water with his family. You were taken back by how calm the water swayed. That in itself was surprising because the ocean always seems to have a mind of its own. You're reminded of the Eywa instantly. How the inner workings of life flow within her. How her network makes it possible for all living things, plants, and animals to connect as one. The way the ocean remains tranquil makes you assume that this is all Eywa’s doing. Could she feel the shift in the atmosphere through the way of the water? The gathering of the Metikayina clan and the Sullys came together as one to mourn the loss of casualties. Was Eywa allowing a moment's worth of peace? Providing security and a safe passage to lay the dead to rest.
You weren’t sure.
Your mind continuously wanders. Distracted from the way the water welcomes you all in a gentle embrace. Kind enough to hopefully welcome you back for a night swim with Neteyam. Various nightly escapades forefront, reminding you of you and Netyeam sneaking out to a secret beach you discovered. It was your most favorable time spent together. Venturing around the island, risking the chances of getting into trouble, but it never worried you, nor him. His rebellious side was one you didn’t know you wanted to see more of till he grabbed your hand one night and told you to be quiet, he didn’t want his siblings to wake up. Your eyes fleet, taking in your surroundings. An unsettling earl sets off your senses. Your ears flatten, attention engaged, eyes falling onto his family swimming forward with you. The lost look on your face didn’t fall past Lo’ak watching with worry as you whipped your head around. You were unfamiliar with your surroundings all of a sudden.
Weren’t I just at the docks? How did I manage to get this far out?
Your attention falls onto him then. Your freak-out incident, coming to a stop. The breath you inhaled blocked your airway. You hold on tightly, your fingers curl into the leaf. Your eyes drifted onto his motionless body, sparing seconds of what was left of your sanity. His soft features were relaxed. Victim to a deep slumber.
He was only resting, you thought. Just resting.
You tilt your head. A smile dances its way onto your lips. The band holding his hair in one nicely kept ponytail stirs a flutter within your stomach. You can’t help but laugh. Finding his neatly kept hair hilarious, whereas you preferred the vicious swinging braids more than anything. You like to remind Neteyam that his hair seems to have a mind of its own. You're oblivious to the narrowed pinched glares cast at you. You press your fingertips over your mouth in hopes of making yourself stop.
“Why’s his hair pulled back? Neteyam never pulls his hair back.” Another rumble of giggles emits past your lips as you reach forward to free the braids of their confinement. The only thing coursing through your mind is that Neteyam would be grateful. Knowing that his long braids could never be tamed and forced into a ponytail. Your laughter comes to an abrupt stop. A firm grip on your wrist brings you back to reality for just a second– a second of truth, one you didn’t want to submit to.
“No Y/n.” Lo’ak shakes his head. He reached over Neteyam’s body to stop you. His hand was still wrapped around your wrist as he pushed your hand back towards your chest.
“He likes to wear his hair loose.” You tug at his constricting grasp on your arm. His restless eyes meet your twisted frown.
“Y/n-” He says your name with a break, almost in a warning-like. Holding himself back from causing a scene, but you already caused one first. “Just leave it.” He pressed your wrist to your chest. Pushing harshly in hopes you’d get the message. Hoping you wouldn’t push. You can only bring yourself to cast your eyes down. The tension in your shoulders disappears and your shoulders slump. The ache in your chest worsened, and the dissatisfaction of seeing his hair brought together by a band continues to bother you.
“He likes it loose…just let him wear it loose.” Lo’ak glances at you before he turns to face forward again.
Your mind continuously wandered. Hypnotized from the way your body feels weightless. Like the feather behind Neteyam’s ear. You're fully immersed but the journey to the sea anemone is lost on you. You don’t comprehend what’s happening as you all slowly bring him out of the leaf. Turning his body so his face met the night sky. You don’t hesitate to lay your hand over his bound ones. You lean in, eyes wide, your heart begging for a sign. Pain paints your eyes, a tear falling into the water causing a ripple.
“You gotta let him go kiddo.” Jake’s strained voice startles you. Your eyes remain on Neteyam. Your body was present but your mind was still back on the ship. Back on the rock where you watched life leave his eyes. “Y/n?”
“Y/n, they have to take him, okay?” Lo’ak voices echo in your ears. His own hands wrap around your own. Slowly prying your grip away from his brother's hands. You don’t react to this. Lo’ak drags you back away from his body. Keeping his arms wrapped around your frozen frame. Neytiri feigns a frown watching you lose yourself there all at once and all together. She turns to meet her husband's gaze and then takes a deep breath along with him. Both dive opposite of each other to help their momentum to lower their son's body into the water. Pushing with their hands and legs. Kiri, Tuk, and Spider, then join, lowering themselves into the water to watch. Lo’ak eyes fix themselves on you. Your eyes stared out into the open water, not meeting his own.
“Take a deep breath, okay.” Lo’ak executed the action, reminding you how to do so. Your eyes flicker up to him for a moment before intaking a good amount of air. He offered a nod then your bodies sunk past the surface layer. You didn’t know what to expect but watching as Neteyam’s body was slowly lowered, the first yellow tendril making contact with his arms and legs, it made you want to scream, swallow the water that would fill your lungs. Sink down to the bottom with him. The thought grew very tempting. Even as Lo’ak removed his arms around you. So you went along with the idea. Impulse taking over rationality. You opened your mouth, watching air bubbles rumble in front of your face. Your lungs burn as the saltwater makes your body convulse. The surface not being more than an arm's length away, but you were stupid enough to widen the distance. Allow yourself to sink. To drown in your own sorrow
You didn’t watch as his body descended to the bottom of the sea anemone.
As far as you were concerned, his death never happened. The situation left you in a state of hysteria. Even after Lo’ak and Kiri’s failed attempts. You would still not believe them when they told you that Neteyam was gone. That he was dead. You refused to believe such an absurd thing.
That was the first change they noticed in your state of denial. Not wanting to take the necessary steps to mentally prepare for his death. The second change made Lo’ak and Kiri’s hearts settle with uneasiness. After Neteyam's passing, you were unable to function as effectively as the others. When Lo'ak observed you occasionally, you would stare at the water, oblivious to the world around you, and solely focus on the ripples the water created. You did this so often that you made it a habit to tune out the living and wait on the dead. Counting on Neteyam to resurface, and come help you understand why your whole world suddenly turned upside down. He always had the answers to your questions. Always had the ability to ease your troubles and doubts.
There was never any cause for concern. The way they would find you sitting alone. There wasn’t anything to worry about. Until you made it a habit of not coming up for air. Lo’ak and Kiri had decided to voice their concerns towards their parents when you hadn’t resurfaced for over a few minutes one night. You were pushing yourself to hold your breath for longer periods. A dangerous habit. One they didn’t want to see the end results of when you eventually didn’t break through the top layer of water. The conversation they had with their father playing like a broken record in the back of their heads. A constant reminder not to let you out of their sights.
-
“I want you to follow her, see where she goes, okay.”
“What?” Lo’ak met his father’s eyes with disbelief. “Why us? Dad, you need to tell her something. Ground her. Keep her home. Y/n’s not okay. She won’t listen to Kiri and me, but maybe if you talk to her, she will!”
“Dad, she keeps wandering off during the night. Dad, I’ve found her gasping for air other times because she’s tried to stay underwater. She needs help!” Kiri pleaded. “You have to help her!”
“If what you two are telling me is true, then you need to keep a close eye on her. Someone in her state cannot be trusted to be left alone right now, okay? Why do you think I’m keeping an eye on your mother?”
“I-I thought you said mom was fine?” Lo’ak furrowed his brows.
“She’s not.” Jake shook his head. “I’m lucky enough if I can get her to eat something every day, let alone get her out of bed…Look that girl’s not thinking straight. She’s mourning your brother. We all are. And right now, trying to grasp the difference between right and wrong is not something she can do.”
“Not grasping? Neteyam’s dead! What is there not to grasp? He’s gone, Dad, and she doesn’t want to believe that…” Lo’ak voice broke. Turning his head so that his father couldn’t see him cry. Though when he lifted his head to meet his dad’s eyes again, he found him in the exact same state. Jake reached forward and pulled Lo’ak into his chest. Holding him close, providing comfort.
“Y/n can’t mentally grasp anything right, right now Dad. She’s barely taking care of herself as it is.” Kiri’s lips formed into a thin line. “I don’t want to watch her meet the same fate as Neteyam. I can’t go through that again.”
“I know. I know. He’s gone and it’s hard to come to terms with that sometimes. Especially for your mom, and for Y/n. Just– Y/n’s in denial right now which is making it very hard for her to even want to deal with the idea of Neteyam being gone. We know he’s gone, your mother and tuk, they know he’s gone, but Y/n doesn’t, okay? You can’t make someone process a loss if they’re not willing to, and she’s not willing to. I just need you two to make sure she doesn’t give in to her impulsive thoughts, okay? Keep her from doing anything stupid. At least until she’s ready to try and move forward.”
“What do you want us to do until then?” Lo’ak pulled back. Annoyance struck Jake’s features, ready to scold the boy.
“Did you not just– Just make sure her heart’s still beating by the end of each night, yeah? That’s all I ask. Keep her alive.”
“You mean to keep her from killing herself.” Lo’ak scowled.
“Lo’ak-” Kiri nudged him.
“Just do me that favor.” Jake closed his eyes, not wanting to dispute with his children. Not having the energy to do so anymore. “Please, that's all I ask. All I ask.”
“Yes sir.” Lo’ak nodded. Bowing his head.
-
You slowed your breathing as Neytiri and Jake settled down into a deep slumber.
A broken laugh would leave your lips anytime Lo’ak or Kiri, even Tuk, would try and convince you to eat. Poor Tuk. She couldn’t convince you to play with her anymore either. Her favorite pastime moments were no more. She missed having you braid her hair. It felt like something that was lost now. Neteyam’s death took a toll on trying to be happy. You knew it was something that you could be, but sadly it was something you were not.
Neteyam was a memory. A dream really. An endless thought that enlightened your spirit. He made things better, but you were no better. The light within you dimmed when he took his last breath. All the oxygen left your body that day too. You were still clawing for air, trying to reach for it, to give oxygen to your lungs. You couldn’t breathe. Not without him.
Tsireya and Aonung were made aware of this as well. Both offered to secretly take care of you each time you dived.
“She’s hurting. We all are. You just need to make sure she doesn’t give in to her impulsive thoughts okay? Y/n grieves him differently...”
Lo’ak replayed his fathers' words as he, Kiri, Tsireya, and Aonung, followed from a discreet distance. You snuck out of the Marui pod and called upon your Ilu. One of several times you’ve done so. It was muscle memory to you by now. The act of going off on your own.
You never went anywhere far. Just to the Cove of the Ancestors. Lo’ak picked up on where you’d go after the third time he and Kiri followed you. You always rode out to the spirit tree. It was your most frequented place after the funeral.
You dismounted your Ilu. Removing your queue before taking a deep breath. The others had arrived just as you dove in head first. Your Ilu swimming off.
Lo’ak had turned onto his back, relaxing on his Ilu. Hands behind his head as he watched the night sky. The others were staring, but this was what it was like waiting for you. It was routine, and Lo’ak wanted to lay down till your return.
“How long till she resurfaces?” Aonung followed Lo’ak and relaxed on his Ilu. Tsireya and Kiri remained seated but Tsireya’s shoulders were slumped. The composure of the chief's daughter faded amongst her friends. On the occasion of your nightly visits to the Cove, it’d mostly be Lo’ak and Kiri attending. Tsireya and Aonung would come along, but it was never frequent for them. Yet tonight the whole gang was here.
“She’s been getting better at breathing. She was down there for almost an hour the day before.” Lo’ak removed his hands and dipped them into the water creating ripples. “I’m betting thirty minutes, maybe less.” His ear twitched as he heard a scoff to his right. Kiri rolled her eyes.
“The spirit tree allows you to breathe once you make the bond, Lo’ak.” Tsireya reminded him. “Like the Txampaysye (Gill Mantle). Y/n is able to spend a longer time in the water.”
“Skxawng. We are not here to bet on anything. Mind him Tsireya, he doesn’t understand what these visits mean to Y/n.” Kiri sighed as she spoke to Tsireya. “It’s however much time she needs, not how long she takes. Besides, she’s always resurfaced!” Kiri splashed Lo’ak.
Lo’ak’s mood now peeved, he shot her a narrowed glare. “What about last time, huh?”
“We don’t talk about it, Lo’ak!” Kiri’s eyes grew. She shook her head, warning him. If he so much as peeped. “You promised Dad!”
“What happened last time?” Aonung eyes flickered back and forth between the siblings.
“Kiri thinks Y/n was drowning last time.” Lo’ak lifted his chin staring right through her. Waiting to see a falter in her poised composure.
“You do not believe so?” Tsireya’s eyes narrowed, shifting onto Lo’ak in question.
“She couldn’t hold her breath anymore–'' Kiri tries but Lo’ak cuts her off again.
“No, she wanted to drown!” Lo’ak couldn’t hold back any longer. He was tired of sugarcoating that horrid night. Tired of keeping it a secret. “It’s why she won’t talk to her.” He looked at the two siblings and then at Kiri. “She’s mad at you because you saved her. Then you told Dad, and now we come out here and bring her home every night. That's the truth, Kiri!”
“She was hurting that day-“ Kiri closes her eyes.
“Y/n knew what she was doing Kiri.” Lo’ak neared his Ilu closer to her. Placing a hand on her shoulder. “It was not an accident.” Kiri gave in, nodding. Agreeing. Coming to terms with the fact she stopped you from trying to drown yourself. “If she doesn’t come up when the fish swim by, we go down for her. Yes?” He suggested. “Until then we take turns checking up on her.”
“Okay.” Kiri sighed.
“Okay.” Tsireya nodded.
“What do we do until then?” Everyone looked over to Aonung. “Wanna play a game?” They were not amused in the slightest. “What?” Aonung raised his arms.
“You can swim down first to check on her.” Lo’ak declared, pushing Aonung off his own Ilu.
-
Your eyes reopened after attaching your queue to the tree. You sat at the edge of a grass bed, feet dipped in the water. Neteyam disapproved of you doing so. You had the tendency to swish your feet back and forth, creating bubbles and ripples. Just like you were doing now. You smirked, eyeing a fish that swam away. You tilted your head, catching sight of its gray fin from behind. The poor thing had hidden from you behind a big rock.
“You’re scaring the fish.” A gasp escaped past your lips. You had lost count of how many times hearing his voice still surprised you. You wanted to tear up hearing him speak because it shouldn’t have felt real, but it was. He was. You knew it was because your hand would connect against the side of his face, every time. You could touch him, hear him, and cherish the mere sight of him alone. He was gone physically, but here. Here Neteyam was real.
The visits grow more difficult as time passes. You are able to stay for longer periods. The tree provides you with the possibility. Though, every time he appears, and you see his face, you fall into the false reality of his presence. Though you have to wake up from this at some point. Arriving to the tree is easy, it is the leaving that pains you. Your light would flicker as you’d go to close your eyes again, and the harsh reality would punch you right in the face, and you’d be met with the luminescent glow of the tree. The pink hue mocking you. You were always on the verge of a breakdown. During your first visit, you were sure you had filled the pond more with how much you cried. Neteyam was scared, thinking you were injured, but you had made the excuse that the Paysyul (Water Lily) he picked out for you was causing your eyes to water. That it was due to allergies, but Na’vi hardly got sick, yet he bought it. He stopped giving them to you afterward. Practically rid the pond of their existence. It made you cry even harder. That’s why your visits never lasted long enough. You could never hold yourself together in front of him.
“The fish are fine.” You smirked, glancing over your shoulder. You were met with a wide tooth grin and fangs.
He’s real here, you keep telling yourself as he grows near.
Your mouth opened as your eyes met. He was a vision. Beautiful. Transitioned from his baby face phase into the man you love. You didn’t dare speak in past tense. Your love for him was infinite. You’d love him forever until your dying breath. Your heart grew fonder as you both grew older. Playdates turned into hangouts, turned into meetings at this very pond. He and his father founded it first, the start-up of their father-son pastime, but Neteyam eventually granted you admission, having shared his safe place with you. Showing you where he collected his game, and where he ran off too to let off steam. It was where you two could get away. Be two skxawngs in love. Away from curious on-lookers. Where you weren’t trying to exceed as the next Tsahik and he wasn’t training to follow in his father's footsteps as Olo'eyktan. You were simply Y/n and Neteyam. Two peas in a pod. Fishes in a pond, really.
Neteyam, not in the slightest bit amused, saw you eyeing the fruit in his hand. He bit into one of them before making his way over to your side. He set his bow down to his side and took his seat. Soaking his feet in the pond too. He chewed on a piece as he offered the other four in his palm. You bit your lip, looking amongst them to grab the ripest one. You took one and bit into it. Your eyes nearly crossed in pleasure due to the sweetness it gave off. The delightful snack almost makes you forget about the boy of the hour. You press your fingertips to your lips as you swallow the bite. You turn your head not expecting his eyes already on you. One look from him was all it took to make your ears dip. You felt a whirlpool in your stomach before you turned away. You cleared your throat and tucked a loose braid behind your ear. “See, they are perfectly happy.” You gestured with your finger to the fish swimming near your feet.
Neteyam playfully narrowed his eyes at you as he took another bite out of his Yovo. He offered another fruit to you but sucked his teeth when you shook your head no. You weren’t here to eat. He rolled his eyes and let them drop beside him. Coming to his feet again. He collected his bow and an arrow. Eyes scanning the pond, following the movement of the fishes. He dared a glance down at you. His smile grew as you tried shying away again, but your eyes never swayed from him. You could see the shift in his demeanor turn into a cocky one. Always wanting to impress you, even in the afterlife. He gave you a smirk, then focused on his breathing and his stance. It was enough to make you turn into a puddle. A whirlpool of a hurricane in spin mode. Neteyam knew how flustered you got around him, he practically grew another ego from it, but you continued to encourage it even now.
He exclaimed, raising his hands in the air as the arrow hit its target. You laughed as he jumped into the pool picking up the wriggling fish. The creature twitched in his grasp. You squinted, covering your face, as water droplets hit you. He looked down at it, inspecting its size and width, before yanking the arrow out of it. You grimaced watching it grow still. They were yummy, but that didn’t mean you didn’t still think they were gross. Your nose scrunched as he came closer.
Fish, you hated them. It’s why you stopped eating them back at the Marui pod. You had enough of them. You were convinced that Eywa had turned one of them yellow during one of your last visits to keep it spontaneous. To keep the peace and to keep away any annoyance you had of them. Yet, Neteyam was the happiest when shooting for fish. You’d watch him shoot that same damn fish over and over again because he loved it, and you. You loved Neteyam. Seeing him at ease with himself passing the time at the pond. It brought you comfort. You wouldn’t trade it for a thing.
Neteyam held the fish up like a trophy. Amazed by the big game he was going to bring home. The proud smile of his father is what he was hoping to see. He looked at the fish like it was the coolest thing in the world. Though upon knowing, he has done much more exciting endeavors. But catching big game trumped undergoing his Iknimaya for sure. You were slightly guilty for his great catch. You would make one fish slightly more significant, larger than the rest during each visit. The bigger the fish, the more his smile grew. It was the only thing you wanted to see.
“Do you see this?” He beamed with delight. “Oh thank you Great Mother for this gift!”
The only thing.
You hadn’t realized you had been crying until Neteyam voiced his concerns. Until his thumb caressed over the fallen tears on your cheek.
“You okay, syulang (flower)?”
“Mmm?” You sniffled, looking up at him with a half-hearted laugh.
“You’re crying. Are you unwell? Was it the Yovo?” He reached across you, going for the dropped purple fruit next to you. He wanted to see if they were bad, but you stopped him.
“No, no, I’m okay.”
Neteyam frowned as he reached up again. His thumb wiped another fallen tear. His touch lingered on your skin. “Something is wrong.” He huffed with a smile. He brought both hands up to cup your face.
“Nothing is wrong, ‘teyam.” You denied it.
“Yes, because I got rid of all the Paysyuls (Water Lilies). Your eyes should be dry.” Neteyam looked around the pond and then back to you. “Is it your allergies?”
“No, not that.” You shook your head. You turned his chin to face you. Hands cupping his face gently. You just held him there. So grateful to be able to feel him. See him.
“What is it then?”
“I’m just happy to see you.” Your eyes grew watery again. Neteyam leaned into your touch. “Spend time with you.”
His brows furrowed, a hint of a smile making its way onto his face. He grew amused but felt fond of your confession. Pressing the space between your eyes in a teasing manner.
“I’m happy to see you too.” His shoulders relaxed. You groaned as you shook out your hands. You were really bad at staying composed. You tried but failed to wipe away your tears, Neteyam reached forward again to wipe under one of your eyes. “But no more crying, you’ll scare the fish away.” He tried to remain serious but you saw him falter. His ears twitched. You gasped, hitting his shoulder.
“I will not!” You laughed. “The fish are fine.” He joined in on the laughter, happy to have brought back your smile.
-
Lo’ak had sent Tsireya down after a while. He, Aonung, and Kiri watched as the bioluminescent fish swam underneath them. Mostly swirling around Kiri. He met her gaze before he went to inhale a big chunk of air. He released it though when Tsireya resurfaced.
“What happened? Is she okay?” Lo’ak asked. She gave a nod.
“She is fine. She’s coming up.”
They brought their heads out of the water. Waiting as you took your time resurfacing. The faint outline of your body could be seen as you grew closer. Once your head passed above the layer of water, you exhaled softly. You tread the water in silence. The others had formed a circle around you. You were staring off into space. Letting your thoughts cloud your mind. You had almost missed Lo’ak’s question.
“You okay? Did you see him?”
You only nodded. A tear trailing down your cheek and into the water like a dew drop. “He’s okay.” You sniffled. “He remains at the pond.” You let out a broken laugh. The group started to enclose the circle, each slowly resting a hand on you before engulfing you in their embrace. They hold you as you continue to tear up after your latest encounter with Neteyam. “I miss him.”
“We miss him too.” Kiri offered a faint smile. You glanced at her. Smiling faintly as you acknowledged her being here for you, even after you declared you hated her. Her teary eyes met yours in agreement. It was time to disperse and move past the fight you had with her.
“He’s at peace.” You sniffled. “That at least brings me some.”
“That’s good, no?” Lo’ak dipped his head to catch your eyes.
“It is, but it gets harder to visit. I don’t want to stop though.”
“Then don’t.” Lo’ak shrugged. The others nodded in agreement.
“Really?” You peered up through your eyelashes. “But don’t you hate coming with me? Waiting for so long?” You frowned.
“If this is helping you. We’ll be here every night, waiting for you. However long it takes.”
“Maybe not that long– Ow!” Aonung cried out in pain. Tsireya had swatted him over the head. “We’ll wait.” Aonung cleared his throat.
The corner of your lip lifts in amusement. You always assumed you weren’t worth someone going out of their way for you. This proved you wrong.
“Let’s go home yeah?” Lo’ak gestured over his shoulder. You nodded. He got on his Ilu first then offered his hand to you. You climb on the back and hold on for the ride home. Then you all took off. You glanced back at the spirit tree below the water knowing tomorrow would await another night visiting Neteyam. For the first time, you felt like you could breathe. There’d be no hurry to meet him now. He’d still be there welcoming your arrival with corny jokes and removing another found Paysyul (Water Lilies) from the pond. There was no rush to this, not when you were grieving him.
-
Lo’ak had imagined you being gone the next night. Your time spent at the Cove once more, but he was rather surprised seeing you sat near the Marui pod. Feet in the water. Hands gripping the woven edge. You were just mindlessly being. Existing and letting your thoughts run rampage through your head. He couldn’t help wanting to join you.
He came forward and sat next to you. Letting his feet get soaked. His hands were now gripping the edge too. He broke the deafening silence amongst you eventually. Though nothing was ever really quiet around here. The clicks of the sea life creatures and the motions of the tide entering the reef, provided enough sound. He was oddly curious about something though, so he asked you.
“Why do you do that?”
“Do what?” You lifted your head. Eyes shifting onto him.
“Try to hold your breath for so long. You know there are Txampaysye (Gill Mantle) for that?” He teased you.
“It’s silly.” You bit your lip.
“Tell me.” He urged you.
“Neteyam and I, we used to compete to see who could hold their breath the longest.” You closed your eyes, imagining yourself coming up for air before him. “He’d always win.” Neteyam’s head would pop up in a shit-eating grin. One you’d splash him for. He was never boastful though. Never one to make you feel like a sore loser. “I just wanted to see if I could finally beat him for once.” You laughed. It was indeed silly, but it was silly to you in a sentimental way. Lo’ak being Lo’ak had decided to break your heartwarming memory.
“He definitely cheated.”
“What?” You gasped. “No, he didn’t.” You shoved him. “Neteyam was very just in his actions.”
“He cheated!” Lo’ak couldn’t contain his laughter. Swatting or holding your wrist to prevent you from pushing him into the water.
“He did not. Don’t say that. He let me win once.”
“He did?” Lo’ak stifles his laughter. His eyes and ears relaxing. He offered you a lopsided grin before growing serious again. Not wanting to dampen your memory of his brother.
“No.” You shook your head, feeling deflated. Lo’ak’s laughter picked right back up. Everything you thought you had ever known was ruined. “No, I think– I think he cheated.” You purse your lips. Staring straight into the water. You slacked your jaw, scoffing. “This is your fault!” You smacked his shoulder.
“My fault? This is Neteyam we are talking about.” Lo’ak continued to laugh. “He wasn’t always so serious Y/n, but he always liked to win.”
“It’s not funny!” You whined.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Lo’ak reached for your hands and gripped them tightly. “But no seriously, stop it, even if it brings back the memories of him. You can drown, and I really don’t want to give you CPR.” You gasped this time, playfully hitting him.
“You skxawng...” You smiled nonetheless. Lo’ak reciprocated. You were the only other person who liked to call him that. He wasn’t going to admit it, but he was missing Neteyam and being called that. The thought plunged deep into his heart, but it left a fond feeling. He had you now to help fill in the space where a gap was. “He loved you very much, Lo’ak. Never forget that.” You pressed your palm to his cheek. He nodded in response. Leaning into your palm.
“He loved you too.” Lo’ak extended his arm out, bringing you to his side for a hug. You rested your head on his shoulder, watching the waves softly sway.
“He caught a fish today.”
“Is that all you two do in there, catch fish?” Lo’ak pulled back with a smirk.
“This big…” You smiled, extending your arms the length it was. “Lit up like the Spirit Tree.”

༺♡༻
Gentle waves rolled across the sandy shores of the Awa'atlu reef, tumbling the sand and retreating, only to come back again. There was no beginning to this cycle, no end, it had been since before you were born and would continue after your death. It was this constant that you knew for certain, not much else.
The day had just begun, you could still taste the breakfast your mother had prepared for you and your siblings as you made your way through the village with your little sister.
Tsireya walked quietly, making your suspicions rise.
"What is it?" You asked softly, both of you coming to a halt in front of the ilu saddles.
She shook her head. "What is what?"
A look of incredulity fell upon your features causing her to let out a soft groan.
"I've just been thinking lately..." She hesitantly admitted.
"About?"
She took a breath, placing the saddle she had grabbed back down with a huff.
"We have less than a year. Less than a year until you're to be mated with Txonu, and then you leave. You move into your own marui and have your own family. What happens to me and Ao'nung when you're gone?"
Your face softened, "Oh, 'Reya, I won't be far-"
"No but it will be different." Tsireya argued. "You don't even know him, how do you know you would be a good mated pair?"
"In time, we will learn."
The response you gave, the same one given to you by Ronal and Tonowari, made Tsireya growl, her face screwing up in distaste.
As if, by the will of Eywa, the flap of wings stole the attention of you and your sister, Txonu and his tsurak flew into the reef having just come back from a hunting trip.
You looked over at Tsireya, letting out a huff as you saw her look of mild disgust.
Txonu is a strong hunter and a good fighter. He had been trained under your father from a young age, the future Olo'eyktan of the clan, and you his future Tsahìk. You had yet to see his stoic front dissipate, it seemed a frown was permanently etched into his skin.
Even now, as he walked to meet your father at the front of the village, the crease between his brows was evident.
"He's so...angry." Tsireya complained.
You sighed, "He's just serious."
Tsireya turned her head to look at you, taking in the sadness that creeped behind your pale green eyes.
"Do you...think you will be able to see him?"
Her voice was soft, but it felt like it had reached out to your throat and wrapped around the column, making a lump form and block your airways.
Without meeting her eyes you exhaled, "I will learn to."
༺♡༻
You and Tsireya had been out with your ilus, riding through the kelp and around the reef when someone blew into the conch shell, alerting the Metkayina people of newcomers. A flock of flying creatures through the air, making you look up into the sky and squint your eyes. Looked like Na'vi.
"Come one, let's go see." Tsireya tugged your arm, bringing your attention back from the sky.
Synchronously, you two dove into the water, guiding your ilus to the front of the village.
Upon your arrival, you noticed a group had formed around the newcomers. They were easy to spot, skinny, tall and dark blue- they were not from these waters. You dismounted your ilu, ducking underwater to swim closer to the shore before breaking through the surface. Unbeknownst to you, you had an audience of one.
Neteyam saw the movement in the water from the corner of his eye. Turning his head to get a better view, he felt his eyebrows shoot up and jaw go slack at the sight before him. A Metkayina woman walked onto the shore from the shallow water, her thick, wavy hairy dripping with sea water. His mouth went dry as he followed a droplet that had fallen from her chin travel across her chest, down to her navel, and along her right leg.
Realizing that he was quite shamelessly checking this girl out, he snapped his head back up, eyes darting to her face. Her eyes never met his, not until she was standing behind Tonowari- she was the Olo'eyktan's daughter.
The tips of his fingers began to tingle with numbness- a new sensation all together- as he made eye contact with the Metkayina girl as her head turned to meet his gaze. Neteyam offered her a small, inconspicuous smile, making her purse her lips in an attempt not to reciprocate the gesture, instead looking away.
You felt your heartbeat against your ribcage as the boy, the forest boy you had just learned, looked into your eyes and smiled. Quickly, you averted your gaze, not wanting anyone to notice the innocent, albeit flirty, interaction- but a smile fought to make itself seen upon your lips making you raise a hand to cover them.
"...Our son Ao'nung and daughters Y/N and Tsireya, will show your children what to do." Your ears perked up, only now realizing you had completely tuned out his voice while looking at the forest boy.
Ao'nung was quick to try and argue, "But father, why do I-"
"It is decided." Your father shut him down.
Again, Ao'nung opened his mouth to voice his complaints, you put a hand to his shoulder, silently telling him to cease his arguing.
He turned to face you, "If they drown, I won't be the one to save them."
"If they drowned, " You whispered harshly, "We both know I would be the only one who could save them."
Your emphasis on 'could' made Ao'nung screw his face in annoyance, moving to push your hand off of him as he started to walk away with the rest of the clan. He hated your teasing.
"Come on, my sister and I will show you around our village." Tsireya smiled, stealing your attention from your brother.
You nodded, smiling at the family before nodding your head in the direction of the maruis, "Yes, this way."
The walk through the village was quick, Tsireya doing most of the talking while you led the way through the throngs of Metkayina coming to see the guests. Your mind wandered back to the boy, who you had an innate sense of awareness of as he walked just a few steps behind you, it was like his energy, his aura was tangible- it was reaching out with its tendrils and tugging on your wrists just begging for you to turn around and acknowledge it.
You fought against the temptation.
"Here is where you will be staying." You gestured toward the large, empty marui as your sister came to stand next to you.
Jake Sully, the former Omaticaya Olo'eyktan thanked the both of you before you and your sister left quickly, giving them space.
Neteyam watched your tail swing gently as you left, the vision etched into his mind, he hopes, forever.
The next morning you watched as Ao'nung grouchily put his hair up, being unnecessarily rough due to his pent up annoyance with today's agenda - teach the forest kids the skills of the Metkayina.
"Are you excited?" Tsireya asked, a giddy smile painted across her lips.
You nodded, mouth full with your breakfast.
"The forest boy was looking at you yesterday." She said matter of factly, making you nearly choke on the food in your mouth before you hastily chewed and swallowed.
"No he wasn't." You argued, face heating up at the fact that she had noticed the exchange.
Tsireya shoved your shoulder playfully, "Yes, he was. And you were looking too. I could tell."
You stood up, cleaning the remnants of your breakfast as you spoke monotonously, "Tsireya, I am promised to Txonu, I was not 'looking' at anyone."
"I hate when you do that." She mumbled, following you out of your family's marui.
You stopped, "Do what?"
"Speak like you are an old woman. You only do it when talking about Txonu." She explained, before walking past you and diving into the water.
"I don't sound like an old woman." You mumbled to yourself, offended at the insinuation.
Ao'nung finally made his way out of the marui, "Yes, you do." He concluded, diving into the water just as Tsireya had done.
You grumbled a small 'no, I don't' before entering the water yourself and swimming behind your siblings.
Breaking through the surface of the water, just outside of the forest family's marui, you moved to climb up and onto the ledge in front of the entrance.
You have a soft knock to the side of their doorway.
"Come on in."
It was Jake Sully.
Slowly, you stepped forward toward the doorway, the privacy flap had not yet been rolled up so you couldn't see what was happening inside. You pushed the edge of the flap as you walked through, nearly making it in in one piece...that is until you were hit by what felt like a solid tulkun fin.
You stumbled, trying to regain your balance, only to feel arms wrap around you and steady you themselves.
"I'm sorry, I didn't see you there."
A response was forming on your now dry tongue, but Jake Sully was quicker.
"Neteyam! Careful, huh? Keep your eyes open."
Neteyam nodded, "Yes, sir."
You cleared your throat, suddenly feeling awkward with the way his family had all stilled to stare at the way he was still holding you to his chest.
Lo'ak, his younger brother, let out a chuckle, "You can let her go, bro."
That seemed to catapult everyone back into action, Kiri going to help Tuk tie her top on while Neytiri rearranged their belongings in the hut with the help of Jake. Neteyam was also quick to remove his arms from around you, only for a split second however, before his palm came to rest on your bicep.
He leaned closer to you, lowering his voice ever so slightly, "You are okay? I didn't hurt you, right?"
You shook your head, slowly reworking through the wonders of spoken language.
"I'm-I'm alright." You assured quickly, standing up straight.
Neteyam smiled softly, "Good."

The forest people were not the best divers, your brother, and his friends, made sure to make them very aware of their shortcomings often earning him a smack to the head from either you or Tsireya.
"We don't know this finger talk, we don't know what you are saying." Neteyam said, head bobbing gently up and down as he tread water.
Your voice came out first, "I will teach you."
Both Tsireya and Lo'ak shared a look trying to conceal their laughs.
"We will teach all of you." Tsireya corrected, making you roll your eyes in embarrassment.
The next few weeks progressed as such. You and your siblings taught the forest kids the way of the water, helping them grow their skills in the sea. You and Neteyam seemed to dance along a line of friendship, both of you yearning to push past an unknown boundary, yet reeling back each time. Neither of you could make the jump, afraid of the simple fact that getting close would lead to something irrevocable.
You all sat on a rock, outside of the water as you practiced breathing techniques. Ao'nung and Rotxo had since left, deciding they had better things to do.
Lo'ak, Neteyam, and Kiri listened as you explained the way of water. Your voice slowing down as you speak, an auditory representation of your heart rate slowing. Tsireya continued the speech as you went to adjust Kiri, resting your hand on her chest as she inhaled and exhaled. A smile danced across your lips as you felt her heart rate slow with her breathing.
"Good, Kiri. Your heart rate is dropping." You affirmed.
Neteyam felt as though your grin was contagious, his own mouth stretching into a smile as he watched the way your eyes flitted between your hand over his sister's heart and her face. A long curl fell into your face, making his hand twitch, fighting the urge to gently push it back behind your ear.
Removing your hands from Kiri, who still had her eyes closed as she inhaled and exhaled, you could overhear Tsireya assessing Lo'ak's breathing.
"Lo'ak, your heart is beating really fast." She mumbled, making you snort to yourself.
"Sorry."
Almost instinctively, you turn to look at Neteyam who sits across from you. Both of your eyes meet as you two give each other a knowing look and smile.
Neteyam felt his palms start to clam up as he watched you crawl over to him from the other side of the rock. Sitting on your knees before him, he could smell the salt and...something else, something floral, wafting off of you. He decided then that whatever that smell was, it was his favorite.
You felt him stiffen slightly as you put your hands against his chest and above his naval.
"Let me see."
With a slow, focusing breath, Neteyam started to breathe as you had instructed, slowing his heart rate. The feeling of his heart rate slowing had excitement radiating in your bones. Subconsciously, you scooted closer to him, angling your neck so you could beam up at him. He felt his breath hitch at not only the sight of you smiling up at him with bright eyes, but the feeling of your thigh coming right up against his, dangerously close to his hand that was resting near his bent knee.
Your brows furrowed, "Your heart is going so fast now."
Curiosity got the better of you, his sudden increase in heart rate taking you by surprise. You lean in close, pressing an ear to his chest listening to the strong buh-bum of his heart.
If anything, this new position made it worse. He could feel your hair falling over your shoulders and gently caressing his skin, it made his cheeks burn. Unfortunately for him, Kiri had opened her eyes just in time to catch you pushing your head into his chest. She let out a chortle, making her brother send her a deadly glare while his body remained stiff- this only made her laugh more.
You pulled away from Neteyam, bringing a hand to cup his cheek while the other rested against his forehead.
"Are you feeling alright, Neteyam?"
Neteyam wished that Eywa would take him, end his suffering, or perhaps make everyone else on the rock disappear so he could be left alone- alone with you, and your hands holding his face so tenderly, listening to your voice saying his name with such softness.
"I'm alright." He quickly reassures, hands going to grab your own that had been placed on his face.
You frowned, still curious about his sudden jump in heart rate but before you could say anything else on the subject a familiar sound rang through the air and settled- unwelcomely- in your bones.
Txonu flew over the rock you five had been sitting on before circling back and sending out the call again, it was his call for you.
His tsurak landed just far enough from the rock for you to figure it was an intentional show of dislike for the forest Na'vi.
"I'll be right back." You muttered, diving into the water and calling for your ilu to take you over to the brooding man.
Neteyam's face twitched, "Who is that?"
Tsireya groaned, "Txonu Te Ìkhawvo Uäeye'itan. Y/N is promised to him."
Neteyam turned to the younger girl, nearly breaking his neck in the process. You had never mentioned a mate, but his stomach fell with a new thought now gnawing at his heart- perhaps Txonu was the reason for the wall you've put up between yourself and Neteyam.
"They are mated?" Lo'ak asked, before Neteyam could get the words out.
Tsireya made a face of disgust, "No. Not yet. Txonu is waiting for Y/N to turn twenty, when she is a fully matured woman, to mate. The pair was decided by our parents."
"They are never together. She doesn't even talk about him." Kiri said, a lilt of confusion carrying through her words.
Tsireya nodded, "He's out hunting most of the time."
Her teal eyes glanced at Neteyam, seeing his evident antipathy toward the Metkayina man.
"I don't think Y/N likes him but she says she will do what is necessary for the clan."
Tsireya's explanation made Neteyam grumble. She was betrothed to another man, a man who had made it very clear he did not welcome his family with his standoffish demeanor and cold shoulder.
The Omaticayan's eyes watched carefully as your ilu stopped just next to Txonu. The man barely turned his head to look at you as you spoke. But the conversation was too low to be carried back to where Neteyam sat, forcing him to rely on reading your body language.
"Your father has sent me to see how the lessons have been going." Txonu spoke, eyes looking off into the horizon as if expecting something to jump out and attack at a moment's notice.
"They are learning, some faster than others, but they are all advancing." You explained, looking down into the water as you spoke.
Txonu nodded, "Good. They won't be useless."
You shook your head, "No, they will become strong members of the clan."
Tsireya's voice rang in your head 'you sound like an old woman'. You shake the comment that had been ringing through your head ever since she had said it a few weeks ago before looking up at Txonu.
"If that is all I must get back to the group." You tried to end the conversation.
Txonu turned to look past you and at the Na'vi on the rock, you followed his gaze catching sight of Kiri laughing and shoving Neteyam's shoulder, making him turn to her.
"I will see you during tomorrow's feast then. You are to sit with me, not your siblings." Txonu stated before commanding his tsurak to move out of the area.
You watched as he retreated, letting out the breath you hadn't realized you were holding in before turning on your ilu and diving into the water. For a moment your ilu stilled at your command under the ebb and flow of the surface. Unable to hold it in, you let out a scream, only to be silenced by the water. The air bubbles being the only sign of your cry for help.
Collecting yourself, you had your ilu swim back toward the rock ready to rejoin the group- but it was too late, the mood had shifted entirely.
It wasn't long before your small group began to head back to the village. Tsireya rode in the front, her ilu guiding the others through the reef while you fell to the back of the group.
You were the last to hang up your saddle, the rest of the group having already dispersed when you slowly made your dismount. Forcefully, you threw your saddle over the rack, tying it in place before feeling the burning of someone's gaze.
"How did you like today's lesson?" You asked, not turning to meet Neteyam's eyes.
You could hear the soft smile in his voice, "It was nice. The reef is beautiful. I've never seen anything like this in the forest."
"My favorite is after eclipse, that's when it's the most beautiful. There is this hidden cove with a cave that glows with different plants..." You trail off, finally meeting his soft stare.
There was something about the way he looked at you with his amber eyes that made you feel as though he was looking right through you, reading your soul like a book. His freckles glowed with some sort of truth serum, pulling your most honest confessions out of you, making them simmer on the tip of your tongue. Neteyam made you feel so vulnerable, for the first time in your life you were painfully aware of being perceived by someone else.
Neteyam took a step closer as you moved to avoid his gaze again, with a sharp intake of breath.
"Show me."
Maybe Lo'ak's recklessness was rubbing off on him.
You met his eyes with raised eyebrows, making a hum of confusion.
"Tonight, after eclipse. Show me the reef."
You wrung your fingers together, "I'm not supposed to be out after eclipse, especially not with...you."
Neteyam knew what you meant, if you were to be seen out after eclipse with someone other than your promised mate- the clan would definitely talk and it would definitely get back to your parents.
But right now, he didn't care.
"Me neither. It would be our secret." He lowered his voice, eyes staring intensely into your own.
A fire burned in the pits of his stomach, he wanted-no, needed to see you tonight.
Fiddling with the beads on your waist scarf you tried to respond, tried to think of a reason for why you didn't want to do it.
"Come on. Don't be a wuss." He taunted, hands coming up to cover your fidgeting ones.
He watched as mischief grew in your eyes, the same look he had seen in Lo'ak so many times just before he did something stupid- it made Neteyam smirk.
"I'll meet you at your marui, after everyone is asleep."
༺♡༻
Ronal brushed through your curls with her fingers as you sat on your woven sleeping mat, it was something she had done every night ever since you could remember.
She hummed gently, taking her time to untangle your hair before sleep. Secretly, she wished time would freeze in moments like these knowing that soon you'd be mate and gone, no longer her little girl.
Your eyes fluttered shut at the feeling of her fingers running against your scalp, almost enough to put you to sleep. Unfortunately for the serenity that was fighting to wash over your body, tonight's plan had irrepressible excitement bubbling in your belly.
Neteyam felt a similar feeling rising through his chest, making his leg bounce and fingers drum.
"Bro, you're shaking the whole tent." Lo'ak grumbled, rolling over to face away from his brother.
His family was all either asleep or close to it, the day's events draining them. It was only Neteyam that was fully awake, sitting up on his sleep mat with his back against the side of the marui. His leg stilled and the shaking ceased, only to be replaced by the tapping of his feet as he waited- he would argue that it was rather patiently- for your arrival.
Lo'ak let out something between a hiss and high-pitched growl, as he shifted again pulling his woven blanket over his head dramatically. It was in the silence that followed that Neteyam heard it- a soft clicking, not unlike your call for your ilu.
After hearing it again, same cadence and tone, he knew it was meant for him.
Quietly, swiftly, Neteyam stood up and began inching closer to the doorway of the marui. He looked over to his parents, both sleeping soundly with Tuk between them. Lo'ak was next to fall under his gaze, his head buried under his blanket- he couldn't care less about what Neteyam was doing as long as it wasn't disturbing him. Finally, Neteyam looked over at Kiri, only to find her looking back at him with a knowing look.
She smiled at her brother's startled expression, before she quietly turned around, facing her back toward him and his daring behavior.
Neteyam let out a breath before pushing his way through the doorway of his family's marui.
"I didn't know how else to get your attention." You laughed from the water.
Watching as Neteyam lowered himself into the water as smoothly as he could to keep from making any sounds that would wake up his family.
"I knew it was you." He smiled, swimming over to you.
He made a motion to call for his ilu, making you jump to push your palm over his mouth effectively silencing him.
"No ilus, they would bring too much attention. We swim."
Neteyam nodded before looking down at your hand still covering his hand. Bashfully, you removed your hand from his mouth, only to grab his own hand in a spurt of boldness.
"Come on."
And suddenly, it was so easy to be disobedient if it meant you'd hold his hand just as you were right now.
Your grip never faltered as you swam through the waters, guiding him to the cove you had spoken of earlier. With every pass of a glowing fish or unique plant, you would squeeze his hand a few times to get his attention, effectively making Neteyam melt.
Coming to a halt at the edge of your home reef, you sign for him to go up to the surface.
"It's just outside the reef, stay close to me." You informed, gripping his hand tighter to punctuate your point.
Neteyam chuckled, "Ah, mighty warrior is going to save me?"
His teasing got a quick rise out of you, making you splash him with water. Neteyam blinked, his mouth falling open as he retaliated with a wave of water directed at you. You dropped his hand as a fight ensued, both of you laughing hard as you tried to dodge the water shoved toward you.
You readied yourself to send more water his way, only for him to grab your wrist and pull you towards himself effectively stopping your planned attack- only he underestimated his own strength and ended up pulling you so close your noses nearly bumped.
Neteyam used one hand to grab onto your waist, steadying you in the water while the other he moved to keep you both afloat, along with his legs that were kicking softly next to yours.
The breath in your lungs disappeared, forcing you to gasp gently as you placed his hands on his shoulders.
Words felt insincere as your eyes met Neteyam's. His eyes followed the trail of glowing freckles that were scattered across your face like constellations, a map written into the stars, leading him to your lips.
"Nete-"
"Don't." He cut you off quickly, his voice soft yet strong. "Don't say my name. Not like that. Not when I have so little stopping me..."
His voice trailed as your eyes fluttered shut, trying to regain your composure. Neteyam nearly let his resolve crumble as you placed your hands on his chest to softly push yourself away from him, his fingers trailing against your waist that was pulling away.
"Let's go."
This time you didn't grab his hand.
Neteyam followed you closely as you swam through the water, his mind running a mile a minute thinking about what had just happened. He had half the mind to kick himself over how boldly he acted, how little willpower he had when it came to you.
Arrival to the cove felt sudden, due to his not paying attention. The walk up the shore was silent, it wasn't uncomfortable or awkward but rather dim and empty, there was a lack of emotion- one that Neteyam felt used to be so prominent- suddenly stripped away. He watched as your feet made prints in the sand, a part of him wanting to try his best to walk in your exact steps, fearing that it may be as close as he'll ever come to touching your skin again.
Neteyam's sense of longing evaporated as the entirety of the cove came into view. A cave had formed just a few feet from the shore and the bioluminescent waves tumbling against the sand. In the darkness of the eclipse, it looked like the cave went on forever, the entire back wall- significantly deeper into the cave- was covered with glowing green plants, like the ones he could find back home in the forest.
It looked like just that, Neteyam thought, a secret passage way back to his forest, back to his home.
"It's beautiful." Neteyam breathed out, walking further into the cave.
You watched him, a smile dancing across your lips without your knowledge as you whispered your agreement, not taking your eyes off of him, "Beautiful."
Carefully, you sat down on the ground and held your knees to your chest as you watched the waves beat against the shore. You felt Neteyam's presence before you saw him, the wispy, winding, tickling tendrils of his aura licking at the backs of your arms and down your spine. Turning your head, you watched as he sat down next to you, his eyes coming to meet yours.
"Thank you for showing me this place." He whispered so genuinely, so earnestly, it made you want to take him to every hidden corner and crevice of Awa'atlu, paint him a map of your home just before etching your heart onto his palm.
You nodded, words foreign to your tongue.
Neteyam felt a knot form in his stomach, your lack of response reigniting his guilt over what had happened in the water.
His hand reached out for yours on the sand, stopping short and falling just next to your own before he spoke, "I'm sorry I overstepped."
Your ears twitched at his apology, quivering voice making your heart ache.
"You don't-"
"I do." Neteyam cut you off, "I do have to apologize. It was not my place to speak so freely."
His freckles seemed to glow brighter, making your fingers go numb and tongue go dry with the need to tell him the truth- after a pathetic fight with your own willpower you gave in.
"I wish it were."
It was almost comical the way his eyebrows shot up, making you softly giggle. You made the move to push your hand into his, nudging your fingers under his palm only for him to grab them with such care it made you want to cry.
Neteyam smiled, looking down at your hands before a darkness washed over his features.
"It still is not my place, it is your mate's." His hand let go of yours.
Your mood soured at the mention of Txonu.
"Do you... see him?"
The question made you snap your head to look at Neteyam again, this time as if he had grown two tails.
You shook your head angrily, pushing yourself up and off the floor, "That's not something you can ask. You can't just-"
"It's a simple question, Y/N. Do you see Txonu?" He argued, standing to follow your steps as you paced around the cave.
Perhaps this was a bad idea, you felt too open, too vulnerable, too close to admitting something that you’ve willed yourself to never even think of.
If only the glow of his freckles hadn't been caught in your peripheral vision, along with his handsomely furrowed brow and amber eyes.
"No."
Your answer echoed throughout the cave as if to mock you.
"But he is good. Mother says I will learn to see him."
Again, you could feel Neteyam's presence behind you before he placed a hand onto your shoulder, lips coming to the shell of your ear as he spoke lowly, making your ears twitch against his upper lip.
"Y/N-"
"Stop." You whispered, unable to handle the intimacy.
Neteyam nudged the edge of your ear with his nose, closing his eyes as he reveled in the petal-like feel.
"Stop what?" He questioned, not moving a muscle.
You let out a shaky breath, turning your head to be face to face with the captor of your composure. Neteyam pressed his forehead into yours, eyes still closed as he brought his hand up to cup the side of your face, the other hand going to your waist and turning you to fully face him.
"The pressure of your perfection is crushing me, I can't remember how to breathe when I am near you." You gasped, chest heaving softly from your revelation.
"Then don't."
With that Neteyam pushed his lips onto yours. You were desperate to take everything he had to give you, lips chasing after each movement. He brought a hand to cradle the back of your head, effectively deepening the kiss. Your lips seared and ached with repressed passion, needing Neteyam the same way you needed air. For a moment you felt anger rise in your chest toward the Great Mother. How could she be so cruel, bringing Neteyam into your life knowing it is another man that you have been promised to.
Neteyam was the first to pull away reluctantly, both hands now cradling your cheeks. You pushed yourself closer to him, desperate to shower him with your affection, pressing soft, tender kisses to each of his freckles and running your lips along each of the deep blue lines that colored his face.
The feeling of your lips moving slowly over his skin made his eyes flutter shut, head angling up having you complete access to his lengthy neck. You ran your nose along the column, stopping at the connection between neck and shoulder and inhaling his raw scent.
For the next few minutes, nothing existed to either you or Neteyam as you both took turns familiarizing yourselves with skin you've longed to touch, kiss, and worship. It wasn't until Neteyam noticed a glimmer of orange out of the corner of his eye that his attention was pulled from everything that was you, his heart dropped- sunrise.
"Shit." Neteyam grumbled, pulling away from your lips and holding you to his chest.
Lazily, you kissed the skin there before fully realizing the reason for Neteyam's frustrations. The sun was coming up, the sun starting to peek through just enough that the front of the cove was now illuminated in an orange glow- that meant the village was waking up soon.
"Shit!" You repeated before grabbing his hand and running toward the water.
Neteyam followed you as you dove into the waves, the swim back to the reef had his lungs and muscles burning but your hand clasped around his dulled the ache.
Just as you got to the rocky entrance to the reef, Neteyam tugged you back towards himself. He pulled you into one last kiss, under the water and hidden from the view of the Metkayina. Breaking the kiss you signed 'Meet me here tonight. Same time', receiving a nod in response.
It was by the grace of Eywa that the both of you made it back to your maruis on time and undetected.

The fire in front of you crackled and popped, captivating your tired tired eyes. Txonu notices as you start to doze off, eyes slowly lulling to sleep, making him roughly nudge your arm with his elbow.
You hum in acknowledgement.
"Why so tired?" He grumbled, though you believed that was just his natural voice.
Your tongue was tied, trying to think of a reasonable explanation, anything other than you had spent the night pressed up against the damp wall of a dimly lit cave trying to memorize the creases of a forest boy's lips.
"Didn't sleep well." You muttered, picking at your food.
Txonu side eyed your less than adequate manners, "Good hunters, good warriors sleep. They are ready. You need to sleep."
You assumed that was his way of trying to care about you, his own special way of saying 'try to get some sleep, for your safety'. Instead it came out like a father scolding a child and it made you cower.
Tiredly, you responded, "Yes, Txonu."
The agreement received a nod from your betrothed, silencing the conversation before he started it up again.
"Have you taken your tsurak out lately?"
A sudden sense of deja vu hit your nerves, you've had this exact conversation with your father already.
With a shake of your head you explain, "No, I have not needed to fight, nor have I been hunting this past week."
"The ilu is a child's animal. Warriors have fought on the backs of tsurak's-"
You interrupted him.
"And when there is a war, I will mount my tsurak. There is no war Txonu, my tsurak may swim freely until I call for it."
Your outburst angered your future mate, you could tell by the way he gripped the bowl in his hands and his features hardened.
"The forest people will bring a war, and we will be forced to fight. Warriors should be ready." His stare intensified as he turned to meet your gaze.
You stayed quiet, wishing for the conversation to end before your anger took over- a short temper was a trait that had carried to you from your mother.
Txonu saw this as a sign of submission, allowing him to continue.
"You are either a warrior, the one I know you have trained to be, or a child that partakes in reckless behavior with their siblings. You cannot be both."
The band snapped.
Standing up roughly, you turned to look down at Txonu who was ready to chastise you for acting out.
"When the war comes. I fight. But I will not go looking for a battle like you do." Your voice was low and calm, eyes looking down your nose as you spoke to Txonu- something he found immensely disrespectful, although you couldn't find it in yourself to care as you walked away from him.
Your escape route had you passing by the Sully family, making Neteyam look up at you as you walked quickly. Within a split second, he was able to catch the glint of unshed tears in your eyes as you bowed your head. Thoughtlessly, he stood up to follow you making Neytiri raise her eyebrows at her eldest's actions. Jake opened his mouth to say something, but was distracted by Kiri placing her hand on his shoulder. She gave him a pointed look making her dad furrow his eyebrows before shaking his head and turning to say something to Neteyam, only to be met with empty space- he was already gone.
Sand was kicked with each step as you walked to a more secluded side of the beach. With a rush of anger you fell to your knees, clawing at the sand and grabbing at anything you could find only to roughly throw it away from you with choked sobs. It was only when a body crashed into yours that you were brought back to reality, everything crushing down and crumbling at your feet.
Neteyam pulled you onto his lap as you cried, pushing your face into his chest. His hand came up to hold your head to his body, large palm trying to barricade you from the outside world as he pressed his lips against your head.
"Mawey, Y/N, mawey." He spoke into your hair, rocking you back and forth.
Your cries subsided at not only the sound of his voice, but the feeling of him speaking, the vibrations moving through his chest and to your ears.
"What is wrong, yawntu?"
You shut your eyes, letting your deepest thoughts come up and form words on your tongue.
"I can't do everything they ask of me. I cannot watch over my siblings and be a warrior and learn to live with Txonu. I can't even eat with him without wanting to pluck his eyes out, I don't like him." You sniffled.
Neteyam thought for a moment, "I'll take you back to the forest with me."
You smiled softly, allowing yourself to indulge in the fantasy.
"You can be my tsahik, I will be Olo'eyktan...nothing will bother us."
The image had been drawn in your mind, making you nostalgic for something you've never had. If only it were that simple, but you knew better, you knew that were to mate with Txonu, Neteyam and his family would venture back to the forest after the threat of the sky people was extinguished- and this was the better outcome. Your mind lets you wander, only for a moment, to the possibility that the Sully's may never leave, instead you'd be forced to watch Neteyam choose another Metkayina woman as his mate. You'd be forced to celebrate their union as Txonu drove the dagger further into your heart, approving the pair along with his tsahik's blessing.
Neteyam could tell what you were thinking is causing you great pain. The way your face dropped and eyebrows knitted together, he could tell it was nothing good and made it his mission to rid your mind of such awful thoughts.
"Come on." He said, moving you so he could stand up before grabbing your hands and pulling you up.
You grunted, "Where are we going?"
Neteyam smiled, "Our cove, feast is almost over, people will be out."
"No," You protested, pulling on his arm. "Our parents would drown us if they realize that we're missing. That we are both missing at the same time."
Neteyam inhaled before speaking, a feeling settling in his bones, energizing his recklessness that he had only become acquainted with after meeting you.
"I've never found anything worth the punishment...not until I found you."
You shook your head, "Nete-"
"No. I would follow you anywhere. My eyes blinded and hands tied, I'd follow you, oeyä yawntu."
Again, you found it difficult to form words as emotions crashed over you. Never had anyone spoken so passionately to you- your heart ached.
No words seemed to be enough, but Neteyam didn't need words as he led you to exit the reef.

Neteyam tiptoed back into his family's marui, praying to Eywa that everyone was asleep and he could deal with a scolding in the morning.
"Have fun?"
Neteyam shut his eyes, his stomach dropping at the sound of his father's voice.
"Dad-sir. I am sorry, I was just talking to a friend." Neteyam tried to explain in a hushed tone, everyone else was sleeping.
Jake pursed his lips nodding, "I saw the look in your eyes."
"What look-"
"She's spoken for, boy. What do you think you're doing?" Jake spoke, volume rising slightly, voice strained.
Neteyam shook his head, "Dad, I-"
"How do you think this is going to end? It's not gonna be a happy ending, Neteyam." Jake pleaded, standing up to walk closer to his son.
Neteyam growled, turning away from his dad trying to wave him off and ignore the worries that gnawed at his insides now being voiced.
A lump formed in Neteyam's throat, a feeling of dread coating his heart. He turned back around to look at his dad, eyes now pooling with tears.
Jake was taken aback, he couldn't remember the last time he had seen Neteyam cry. In an effort to comfort his son, he put his hand to Neteyam's cheek, holding his face as his tears fell.
"I love her, dad. I see her. All of her. Everything she is, I see it." Neteyam choked out.
Another wave of tears fell from his amber eyes as his dad pulled him into his chest, holding him just like he would when he was a child.
Jake felt his heart break, "It's ok. It's ok. We' ll figure this out."
Neteyam gestured toward his heart, palm coming up to tap over his chest, "It feels like there are stones in my heart."
Arms tightened around Neteyam's frame, Jake sniffled at his kid's words, "I know. I wish I could fix this." He pulled away from the hug to face his son, "I wish I could take this pain away, son."
"The Great Mother wouldn't bring her into my life just to take her away." Neteyam mumbled
Surely, Eywa was not this cruel?

“need to ruin you for me” — neteyam sully (⨳)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
imagine being newly parent and neteyam missing your body so much, so he asks you to see him in the hut you to share to end up fucking his pent up frustration in you? that’s right. — i’m back at it ᐢ..ᐢ
pairing : baby daddy!neteyam x fem!reader
warnings : dad!neteyam needs his own warning, frustration-fucking, orgasm denial, teasing, one mention of spanking if you squint, quickie but it’s not (?), just neteyam starving and missing being close with you. ( wc – 1.7k)
Tumblr media
“what are you doing?” impatient neteyam stood behind you, looking over the bead you’re knotting.
you peeled behind your shoulder, holding one bead to your finger and sliding it down the thin rope for your newborn. the urge in your mate’s voice didn’t go unnoticed by you.
“songcord for our baby.” you shrugged.
“oh, songcord?” neteyam nodded, heading to your direction. “but he’s asleep right now.”
“i know baby, i just wan–“
“uh-huh, that’s so nice,” he was quick to interrupt, “can i see you in our hut in a minute?” neteyam didn’t wait for your answer and you giggled hearing his steps fade away.
you put the almost complete beads carefully down and stride behind him, nearly stumbling against your own feet. excitement was starting to course inside you, gut twisting with adrenaline.
and the moment you both were inside your hut, neteyam pushed you into your bedroom and slid the curtain of the hut fully which only caused your skin to prickle with goosebumps at his serious face.
neteyam was craving for you just like you were, especially with you both not being around each other after you welcomed your baby to pandora because you were just simply supposed to heal fully.
and as if he was reading your mind, both of your bodies collided with equal force, the kiss becoming sloppy and messy real quick. neteyam’s eager moans and laboured breathing filled the room.
he was groping on what he was able to, missing how your skin felt against his. “fuck.” he hissed between the kiss.
“you infuriate me, y’know.” he was pulling on your loincloth roughly, tugging it out from your chest and exposing the swell of your tits. “why? what did i do?’” you purposely keened, hand sought to his braids.
neteyam groaned when you slightly pulled on his hair, his cock twitching under his fabric. “you’ve been prancing back and forth in front of me for six weeks when you know i can’t do anything i want to you?”
you love how he’s so desperate and in need of you.
“and you dare to pull that fucking stunt saying you’re beading our son’s songcord– fuck.” he spun you around and the sound of him pulling you to his chest and pressing your back firm to his almost making you fall apart.
“i was tryin…” neteyam had no desire in hearing your excuses. “get up there.” he motions and you noise out eagerly.
thrills ran up and down the length of your spine when a sting was felt upon your perked ass. “moving too slow, princess.” your mate roars at you with a grin on his face. “i’m starting to think you’re doing that on purpose, hm?”
you begin to inch back to the hammock, breath chopped when the bed sinks as neteyam joins you and moves closer towards you.
“no i don’t.” you try to fight back, a knowing coy smile tinted on your soft lips. “you don’t?” neteyam’s tone told you believed not a flying fuck that’s coming out of your mouth.
you open your mouth to speak but large hands pulling you under him by your ankle made you gasp loud. neteyam grasped on your thighs, pulling you to him and spreading your legs wider to get comfortable between them.
your blue skin was slightly darker, blood rushing to them. neteyam’s hand smoothed down your heat, lightly pressing on your soaked loincloth. you whimper when he rubs on the aching spot, rough skin of his fingers grinding over your covered clit.
the urge to vanish under his touch felt extremely intense, yet gradually you felt nearing your edge just with the slight friction he was giving you.
you really missed having him.
neteyam knew you like the back of his hand and your thighs starting to close against his body told him you’re just close and being brought to your limit. he watches you attentively on how your back arches, hand trailing down to wrap on his wrist.
“‘teyam.” you pant, throat closing with a moan— until your mate suddenly stopped.
your eyes, which you don’t remember closing, shoot wide open. and on neteyam’s face there was a knowing grin spread that makes you whine. “how does it feel to be frustrated?” he asks. your pussy pulsed around nothing and it pissed you off.
“neteyam.” you warningly whine.
“you don't like having to wait, do you?” you were quick to shake your head causing him to click his tongue. “this is how i felt for eight fucking weeks.” he grunts, the restrain against his tent making it hard to stay covered anymore.
“i was stopping myself from destroying you inside out.” he says and your breath catches in your throat.
“nete’ please?” you only plead, wanting him inside you, filling you up to the brim. “please what, baby?” neteyam was leaning to you, hovering over your body which makes you whimper excitedly.
you brought your hands to his neck, pulling him for a kiss and caressing his cheek softly, making sure you got his attention before whispering softly: “i want to feel you inside me.”
you bite your lips when neteyam’s lips parted, his amber eyes blown wide with your words and nose flaring to your unexpected admission. neteyam swore he almost came right there, throbbing under the so-tight loincloth.
your mate was fast to abandon his teasing, hurriedly submitting to your ask. barriers got discarded in a speed of light, neteyam pulling off everything cloth that was covering you away from him before he did the same for himself.
right the moment he had you comfortable and made sure it’s all good to go, neteyam moaned as he worked every inch of himself inside you. “i missed you.” he breathes against your lips, “so fucking much.” your skin shivered.
“missed you too, nete’” you gasp onto his mouth.
once he was fully bottomed out in you, he made sure his chest was pressed against your tits. feeling your heartbeat and wanting to be closer than that. you feel his left hand glide up to you right and lace your fingers with his before pinning it to the side of your head.
and the other went to your hips, stopping you from squirming at the heavy feeling between your thighs.
neteyam retracted his hips back only to thrust roughly, knocking your breath out. “mhm,” he breathed, eyes closed and smiling foolishly when your free hand brushed on his cheek.
both of your grunts and mewls mixed, filling the room with the warmth of your love making. neteyam took advantage of two of you being alone, no babies or family members interrupting you.
“c’mon, let me hear you.” he wanted to hear your soft moans when he fucked you slow, he wanted to hear the voice he missed, he wanted you to scratch his back and let him know how he was making you feel good.
“feels so g-good,” you stutter every time he worked himself in you.
neteyam grazed on his lips, then his hand that was pinning your hips down trailing to your breast and fondle with your nipple. “you feel so good.” he tells you.
your eyes were barely open but you managed to see neteyam, leaning and pressing his forehead to yours. the finger that was lacing with yours tightened its hold and he picked his pace up, fucking you to the mattress.
you knew he was trying to make you finish before him, and neteyam was losing his rhythm with his hips. the thrust getting sloppier and messier with very hits. “i’m so close.” he whines, shutting his eyes and taking a deep breath.
you have lost the ability to speak the moment he got himself inside you, brain shutdown when he filled your gummy walls with his girth.
“i love you.” you hear him whisper to your ear.
you coming undone under him was what always made him fall in love all over again. “love…too, i love– too you.” your words are broken, tongue tied with pleasure. neteyam chuckled and gave your wet lips a soft peck. his forehead resting against yours for the second time.
“look at me.” he says and you oblige immediately.
neteyam stares into your eyes deeply, knowing he’s there, he starts to pound into you and chases his release. “let go for me.” your voice was enough to push him to the edge and his movements slowed down.
neteyam’s breathing stopped as he drove into you, pelvis pressing against each other. you moaned when he unintentionally grind against your sensitive bud.
you felt his swollen tip kissing the opening to your cervix before the man above you was grunting and choking on his own moan that came from his chest. you just allow him to finish inside you, biting your lips when he keeps whimpering and whining before covering himself by the crook of your neck.
it doesn’t take long for neteyam to get to his senses, blinking and bringing himself back to pandora.
“hey,” you tease and giggle for neteyam to follow. “hi, pretty.” he says and places a soft kiss between your brows. “i missed you so much.” he says again, wanting you to know he means what he was wording out, smiling at while he watched you bite on your lips, “i did too, really.”
you’re about to tap on his shoulder for him to move but neteyam has other plans. he draws himself that he slips out of you almost but thrusts back. “neteyam,” you start but your husband nudges you back to the bed.
“what are you—“ you shriek when you’re rolled over and neteyam is under you. the position only makes him sink into you deeper and you curse slightly silently.
“one more,” he traces the stripes of your skin on your hip. “give me one more and i’ll let you go.” he jerks his hips upward.
“teyam!” the only choice you’re left with was to gasp.

Dark-Obsessive Neteyam x Reader
Request: „I love your works, and I am wondering if you could write dark-angst fic abt neteyam (aged-up obv). Maybe in a scenario where the reader does not like neteyam/sees him as a friend and likes someone else, which makes him jealous. It doesn't have to be nsfw, but I think it will be very fitting considering the theme of the story.‟
A/N: I have a weakness for dark characters. That's why when I was writing this request I couldn't resist and added a few things along with little changes, going beyond the content I was given from anon.
Not my best work but still I hope you will enjoy reading it and that you will like it. Remember, english is not my native language, grammatical errors will or may occur. Works also contains smut , and that's why please minors do not interact with it.
*Some characters have been aged up

She felt it, felt his burning gaze on every inch of her body. No matter where she moved, no matter how she bent, his eyes followed her ,devouring her. This sent a wave of shivers down her spine which spread all the way to her toes.
And when a pair of hands slid subtly over her ribs, the gaze on her body was no longer devouring, but burning, causing her a pain she couldn't forget.
-Your body is right here , with me. But where is your mind tìyawn? - a man asked her, tickling her earlobe with the air that escaped from his mouth.
-My mind is here as well , do not doubt it - she replied, placing her hand on his chest, when her eyes wander over his blue skin and the black tattoos that decorated it.
-Are you lying to your future Olo'eyktan? - he asked, cupping her chin in three large fingers, stroking the soft skin of her cheeks, his thumb tracing her full, kissable lips.
-I would never lie to you, Aonung - she stated quietly, grabbing his wrist, squeezing it gently.
-Yet you're avoiding telling me the truth - metkayina man said, trying to find the answer in her onyx pupils, which had dilated, now resembling a dark night sky that decorated her irises.
Suddenly, the eyes that had been staring at her disappeared, causing her skin to be covered with a long-forgotten coldness.
-There is nothing I am hiding from you - said the woman, involuntarily looking away towards the place where the one who had been watching her every move had recently stood.
But after her words, the person she was looking for so desperately was suddenly behind her, as if summoned. Hiding her silhouette with his massive body ,placing a large, rough hand on her hip, giving her the impression of a silent and sick announcement that she belonged to him, that she was his property.
-I hope I didn't interrupt anything important - he said politely, so politely that it almost sounded like a lie that hide his true intentions.
-No ,of course not my Olo'eyktan - the woman replied immediately, avoiding the gaze of both men.
In response, Neteyam placed two fingers under her jaw, forcing her to look into his golden eyes, which screamed one word - liar.
-Good , very good...in that case, I would like to talk to you - he announced, speaking to her as if they were alone, even though they were surrounded by a sea of people -...privately - he added, and his voice became lower, heavier, almost threatening.
She was unable to agree or refuse before the same hand that held her waist pulled her towards its owner, making her surrender and accept that she was trapped in a snare that was impossible to escape.
But even if she tried to escape, she knew she couldn't do it. She was too weak to disobey, too weak to oppose, and she hated how powerless she had become.
-Neteyam... - she whispered and almost immediately his attention focused on her -...you have to stop. I am begging you.
The man approached her, running his nose over the soft skin of her cheeks, inhaling her intoxicating scent that made him just want to be closer to her.
-I don't understand what you're talking about yawntutsyìp - he said, running his fingertips along her ribs and collarbones, stopping at the crook of her neck.
-My heart doesn't belong to you. I am not yours - the young woman said suddenly - I have never been Neteyam... and I never will be.
Her words made the hand around her neck tighten, not to choke her, but to give her a silent warning.
-Oh, but you are - he growled low in her ear - You are mine, you belong to me Y/n. No one else can have you - his words became more possessive, more dangerous - You said it yourself, I am your Olo'eyktan - he whispered, pressing his body against hers - That makes you my possession.
Y/n let her body go limp.
My possession echoed in her head, and the dark thoughts that had crept into her mind so long ago suddenly became the reality that stood right before her eyes.
-Whatever you feel for me, these emotions. They are dark, poisoned. They are deadly - she noticed, closing her eyes after a moment when in response Neteyam only wrapped his other hand around her figure, pulling her closer to him, so close that the warmth of their skins overlapped - This is not what love should look like.
The man looked straight at her.
-How do you know what love looks like? - he asked, and the hand that was holding her throat found itself on her jaw, holding her head in place - How do you know what my love looks like if you never let me show it to you? You never try to take it, to feel, to truly feel what my love for you feels like.
-If this is what your love is supposed to look like, then I don't want it - the young woman announced, looking directly into his golden eyes, which became shadowy, no longer hiding the darkness that smoldered deep inside men -Your love is like ivy that wraps around me and suffocates me every time I try to move, tightening more and more, so much so that it breaks my bones. This's what your love looks like.
- I'll show you what my love looks like - he growled , suddenly attacking her neck with his fangs , which almost immediately penetrated her skin , creating a bloody mark , that made a silent scream fell out of her mouth , and a shadow of tears appeared in her eyes.
After that Olo'eyktan moved away from her body , watching with a kind of pride what he had done , moments later pushing her against a tree, immediately hovering over her small body ,like a predator who had managed to capture its prey.
His hands touched her with extraordinary precision, giving the impression that he was everywhere, not allowing even one patch of Y/n skin to be untouched. Her shoulders , her hands , her ribs , her breasts , her hips , her thighs. His fingertips left behind a burning sensation that, instead of dying out like a barely smoldering flame, lasted like a wildfire that consumed not only her body but also her mind.
His lips glided over her soft skin , going lower and lower with each kiss , which left a wet trail and chills behind. Neteyam stopped only when he could taste her sweet arousal on his tongue , soaking her inner thighs and loincloth . Her material teased the skin of his face , which found its place on her womanhood. Therefore, his hands , still roaming over her body , found their place on her hips , just above the belt that held her lower garment , after a moment ripping it with great force , tearing it almost to pieces.
-No...no , Neteyam - she whispered, trying to push him away, even though her body trembled with growing excitement that she could not accept.
-Stop fighting oeyä yawne- he muttered, looking at her out of the corner of his eye as his lips brushed her pubic bone, coming dangerously close to her clitoris, which was swollen and wet, begging to be touched - Just give in -he whispered , before his tongue sank between her puffy folds ,tasting her as if she were the sweetest of fruits.
The woman moaned , and her body involuntarily went limp , now being poised by the man in front of her , feasting between her legs , devouring her and making her mind grow emptier and emptier , no matter how much she tried to resist it . Not when his lips roamed over her womanhood , touching her so well, as if he knew her better than she knew herself , which terrified her as much as it thrilled her.
-No...no...oh please stop...I can't - she babbled , as her own body began to refuse to obey her.
But he continued his assault , slurping her juices with great greed , making her orgasm approach uncontrollably fast , too fast . Y/n tried desperately to push Neteyam away from her , but he only clung to her more , lining his tongue deep into her canal , teasing her tight gummy walls , making stars appear before her eyes, while the lower part of the man's face was covered with a transparent liquid.
The young woman let her head drop involuntarily. Her eyes closed again and again , and her mind became completely foggy , unable to think, unable to escape.
-This is what my love for you is , my sweet syulang - he said tenderly , capturing her heated cheek in his large hand - You saw it , you wanted it , you needed it - he announced in a dark tone of voice , kissing the tears that began to run down her face - You truly wanted it , your truly wanted to be mine...forever - he whispered , encircling her tired body with his arms , drawing her toward him , nestling her body into his.
And Y/n allowed him to do so. She allowed him to kiss the crown of her head, she allowed him to bring their kuru together, making them into a unity that even though it wasn't supposed to exist had just been born, finally making her his. Truly his. Forever.
