the theme and structure is mostly intended to introduce at least one critical or historically contextual work followed by examples of the type of narrative in question.

in unit 1, this is the idea of "How do people talk about their own experiences in the context of YouTube and playing video games?" across three rather different kinds of documentaries. unit 2 is intended to take that lens of who is telling what tale and dial in on challenge running, where i first noticed the way some videos turn the story of overcoming a challenge into its own narrative that is distinct from but related to the narrative events of the game itself. unit 3 circles back to the bigger picture with a variety of examples that, to me, are maximally metanarrative, the emergent story of the player-narrator now functionally replacing the game's embedded narrative.

this one is highly underdeveloped, but i'd love to work out something more robust building on randomizer challenges that produce intentionally bizarre, semi-ironic "lore," and bois-esque endeavors to break games so hard the story itself crumbles. but that's really out of scope so i'm just including the links to things i couldn't bear to get rid of. more rambling abt the challenge runs I chose under the cut.

Challenge runs represent one of the most obvious places to start, due to being extremely plentiful and having a hook that makes a "here's how I did X thing in Y video game" format almost unavoidable. Minimalist 100% is an underrated and sweet straightforward example that I mostly include as a baseline for reporting-out style narrative; here are the facts, here's what happened, this is the thing that it is. Mogswamp's 100 Days on Just Dirt is similar in style, but the physical measuring of days is a delightful and, more importantly, external narrative device.

Now oriented, we get a taste of Ceave Gaming's narrative approach to Mario challenges with the no-crouching run, and while we still aren't at the degree of player-characters being constructed for the narrative's sake, the spirited belief in crouching sets the stage for other rhetoric in more extreme cases we'll see later.

The Backlogs' entire body of work qualifies here, but GRIME is the strongest inspiration for putting this list together. I include the DS3 firebombs run because what was initially a factual description of how his wife's use of firebombs inspired him to play differently in the original DS1 firebombs run has developed into full-blown multi-game narrative arc with the Firebomb Goddess (his wife, who also voices the character) compelling his in-game character to achieve his destined quest. Grime takes that even further,

In-Game Documentaries

I include Life as a Bokoblin mostly as a contrast to My Life as a Barber - there is a level of fictionalization and roleplay involved in the Zelda in-game documentary that highlights exactly what I want to single out when I am talking about metanarrative, the story about a story.

Jack woke up abruptly in cold sweat. He reached for his phone and checked his social media. His dream felt way too vivid. He instantly regretted eating all those bagels when he went to drop off Miriam at NYU for her 8am lecture. In his defense he was hungry as hell because he flew in an hour before Miriam's show started and barely made it to the theater. After her performance they went home because they were tired. Jack from being holed up in the studio in Nashville for over twenty-four hours the day before he flew out and Miriam because she was on campus since the morning and barely had time to get to the theater for makeup which took three hours.

For some reason bagels upsetted his stomach, causing him to have nightmares. He dreamt very realistic social media posts and news articles about him and Miriam breaking up. There were posts from their fan pages spewing drama between them because there was no explanation on why they broke up and their fans blamed the other. He even imagined potential dating rumors between her co-star Jacob Elordi and one of Miriam's classmates' boyfriends, Andrei Iosivas. Miriam was in Martin Scorsese's cinema studies program at NYU and met the NFL player's girlfriend there. Though Miriam and Andrei knew each other because Miriam took a summer class at Princeton. They made it clear they were solely classmates.

Jack wasn't even sure how his subconscious came up with all of that in the three hours he napped. He tapped through some Instagram Stories and saw Miriam had finally gone to pick up her costume for her Hamilton themed birthday party that was in two weeks. Ever since she began rehearsal for the Nightmare Before Christmas, she'd been on a Hamilton phase and she sang one song from the musical each day on repeat.

She was going as Angelica Schuyler. Jack didn't know what he was going on but Miriam reassured him he wasn't going as the man in the ten dollar bill or as the man Angelica Schuyler settled for. All he knew was Miriam wanted to take advantage of his new hairstyle.

He hopped in the shower and a few minutes later he got out and did his routine, changing into some grey sweats and a matching t-shirt. He made his way to the kitchen of their rental. They agreed it would be best if they just rented out a penthouse on the Upper East Side, near the Met Museum, instead of living with Katalina. They eantrd their own space, but that didn't stop Miriam from going over for sister sleepovers. They leased the apartment for two years, the length of Miriam's program at NYU.

Jack found Miriam making herself matcha while she sang along to Satisfied as it played through the speaker. He was caught off guard by the fact that she was wearing her costume but in reality it wasn't the strangest thing he'd walk in on Miriam wearing. He leaned against the wall and enjoyed her performance.

Miriam held up three fingers, "Number three. I know my sister like I know my own mind. You will never find anyone as trusting or as kind. If I tell her that I love him, she'd be silently resigned. He'd be mine. She would say, "I'm fine". She'd be lying. But when I fantasize at night, it's Alexander's eyes. As I romanticize what might have been if I hadn't sized him up so quickly. At least my dear Eliza's his wife. At least I keep his eyes in my life. To the groom. To the–AH!" Miriam let out a high pitch scream. "Don't do that."

"C'mere." He said, pulling her into a hug.

He enveloped her into his arms. He held her curls and nuzzled his face in the crook of her neck.

"Did the bagels I told you not to eat give you nightmares?" She asked, knowing it did.

"Yeah." He smiled sheepishly.

"No se puede contigo." Miriam giggled. She pushed herself up on the counter and Jack sat in front of her, using the huge billowing skirt as a pillow while Miriam played with his curls.

She reached over to her Mac and iPad to save her work and turn off her Lin Manuel Miranda playlist.

"What was your dream about?" She asked, twirling one of his curls.

“We broke up.” He murmured against her lap.

“Wow, living without me is really the worst thing imaginable for you, I love that for me.” she said in a playful tone. “I’m kidding but how did that happen? The bagels couldn’t have triggered all that. ”

“Before my nap, I was scrolling through tiktok and I saw a few videos of me at the Louisville game. Some of the comments were dragging me for being too excited at the game while the rest were calling me a piece of shit for not going to opening night and supporting you.” Jack said quietly as he played with the lace ends of Miriam’s dress sleeves.

“Wait, get me out of this dress so we can have a serious conversation.” she said getting off the counter.

“I don’t think I can have a serious conversation with you naked.” He joked. He held her hips and turned her so her back was to him. “Though this practice for when I take off your wedding dress.”

“Don’t worry, my wedding dress has a zipper in the back.” Miriam reassured him.

“Good because I’m struggling with this shit.” He grumbled under his breath.

“Just loosen up the ribbons.”

“Oh.”

Jack undid the buttons and tugged the ribbons. Miriam shimmed out of the dress, revealing she was wearing one of her short workout rompers she wore to pilates. She quickly rushed to store it in her hallway closet with Jack’s costume. She grabbed one of Jack’s flannels and went to the living room where he was laying on the bisexual velvet green couch he bought her. She laid on his chest. Jack kissed her head and squeezed her tight.

“So what’s this about people giving you shit for not going to opening night? I literally had to beg you not to go.” she giggled.

“I know you asked me not to go, but I still felt guilty for not going. It was your big night and I should've been there lurking in the shadows at least.”

“That means a lot but I would have shit myself if I figured out you were there.” she said truthfully.

Like every theater girlie, Miriam was as superstitious as they came. She had this weird tradition where she couldn’t have her family and other loved ones on opening night. According to her, she needed a feel for the audience and how they interacted with her performance without knowing anyone she knew was sitting there. That allowed her to do her thing without the fear of someone she knew was perceiving her as Miriam and not as the character she was portraying. It was something she’d been doing for years and the one time her parents went to opening night, spring 2012, she got stage fright and ruined the play with her projectile vomiting. Since then they have been skipping opening night.

It didn’t make sense to Jack but he was not one to mess with anyone’s pre-show rituals. He had a of his own and knew if one didn’t go as planned it ruined the video for one of his concerts. He knew it was serious business when her parents and siblings sent out a message reminding him not to show up. Though he had forgotten to relay that to his parents and Clay. They ended up going, but they were sitting far enough for Miriam to not recognize them until the curtain call when the show was over.

“I’m making a notes-app post telling people not to bully you.” She reached for her NYU tote bag.

Jack pushed her hand down. “It’s fine. I just wanted some reassurance from you.”

“Wouldn’t you prefer some head from me?” Miriam smirked, straddling him.

“Always, just take off your ring. The jeweler gave me a weird look when I took it to get it cleaned.” He said before gently pulling her head down to kiss her.

“I love you.” Miriam mumbled against his lips.

“I love you too.”

Soon the kiss grew intense and Jack was pushing down the straps of Miriam’s romper. Jack flipped them over so he was on top of her. In one swift movement he tugged off her romper, leaving her in her panties. Jack stood up and pulled off his shirt. He was met with Daisy jumping on his back.

“Oh shit I forgot I promised Daisy we’d make tiktoks with my new song. Rain check?” He asked, unserious.

“Are you serious telling me you rather make tiktoks with my dog than fuck me?”

“When you put it like that…”

Tom was chilling at the Euphoria set like that was HIS workplace 😭 something tells me that man was unbothered while he was supprting his lead actress/producer gf 😅we had stories/videos/pics of him getting her snacks, going to crafty, taking care of noon, Sam asking HIM about a scene (n him politley declining lol), him being in the same room when labrinth/dominic fike/Z were doing music, taking pics/bonding with the BTS ppl and him gettimg up early af lik he was a castmate lol.

Meanwhile i remember there was a account (who worked BTS) that said Jacob was quiet/kept to his self so... he knew his place as a supportimg actor and this being the SECOND time he broke up with the leading actress of a project 💀. Im pretty sure even Kaia visited him on the Euphoria set a few times (i guess someone spotted her), but gurl wasnt there long enough cuz they broke up soon after 💀💀

Giiiiirlllll, I JUST KNEW when Tom told Josh Horowitz in his CHERRY interview that he wanted a cameo in Euphoria that he wasn't thinking about JE or threatened by him in the least! Rofl 😅

That was actually one of the biggest clues to me that Tom and Z had gotten back together if you ask me.

The way I see it, JE was really a non-factor in this lol. 😅 He was basically a pawn while Tom and Z figured out their sh*t and made their way back to each other lol. 🤭

I'm not saying Z didn't care for JE (I'm sure she honestly did!), but EVERYBODY could tell that they didn't match well and that he was just a long-term rebound cuz of the breakup with Tom. You can sense when two ppl/exes have unfinished business. I say the same thing about Tom and Olivia and Nadia. I'm sure there were real feelings there (he wouldn't have dated them otherwise), but everybody could tell that they were just placeholders and that his REAL heart and feelings still belonged to Zendaya lol. It was so obvious! 😅

That's why, I NEVERRR put anything past exes LOL....especially ones that have dated each other for a long time (longer than just a year or two), coz usually those feelings run deeeep.... and it's hard to just cut off your feelings cold turkey like that. Jmho 🤷🏾‍♀️

I meannnn, look at Ben and JLo for goodness sakes!! Rofl 😅 🤣 They both MARRIED other ppl, even had kids with others, and then ended back together with each other..... 18-YEARS post a breakup! 🤣

Look at Nelly and Ashanti! Same thing! Rofl 😅 They dated in the past years ago, then broke up.... he even got married to some OTHER woman lol, and now look.... YEARS later, he and Ashanti found their way back to each other, and she's now pregnant with his baby lol.

I don't put anything past exes...especially the ones that actually looked HAPPY together and like they were best friends. 🥰 That's the key.

I don't think JE really took Z all that seriously anyway (he was rebounding himself, let's be honest), and she always seemed more into him than vice versa 🥴, so their breakup wasn't all that surprising to me tbh. 🤷🏾‍♀️ It was only a matter of time imo.... one, because she had obvious unfinished business with Tom, and two, because they just never matched to me. They may have had the same hobbies in common, but together, they just didn't seem like they "fit". The vibe was all off. You can sense when a couple's vibe is OFF. It's just smthg you feel and sense in your gut. She matched BEST with Tom imo.

I just think that had covid NOT come, she and JE prob would have dated each other for at least a year or two.

Covid was actually the catalyst that helped TZ get back together as soon as they did imo rofl 🤣 😂

White horse rides...

And, Rick gets taken into the sky and is next seen again in the Millennium.

Revelation 6.1

The 7 seals on the scroll 📜

The Lamb (Jesus) opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering and to conquer.

The white horse 🐎 represents a false peace that the antichrist rides in on. He makes a false 7-year (Revelation) peace agreement with Israel (Jacob/Daryl)

Antichist try's to destroy Jacob's ladder (bridge to God) during the time of Jacob's trouble.

Rick is Beth, and symbolically, the seal on the scroll 📜 being opened for the white horse was used to advertise DD2.

1st seal opened on the scroll 📜 , white horse, rider with a bow...

The red (scarlet) horse rides 🐎

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” [4] Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

The red horse 🐎 represents WAR, and the antichrist taking peace from the earth 🌎

The black horse 🐎 rides...

[6] Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!”

The black horse represents famine and food shortages, but the rich (oil and wine) won't be affected.

Buttons the black horse is eating and then gets eaten.

At Alexandria (revived Roman empire that the antichrist rises from), we see rationing of food around the same time we see the black horse ride. 🐎

The pale GREEN horse 🐎 rides...

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” [8] I looked, and there before me was a pale green horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Nelly was Beth's (house of) Greene horse 🐎

The name Nelly is a female form of Daniel, which is from the Hebrew name Daniyyel, meaning "God is my judge"

Nelly (Daniel's 70th week) that Daryl went looking for Sofia on.

Daryl on Nelly went looking for Sofia. Sofia, with her the days of Noah rainbow 🌈 t-shirt, came out of the ark/barn dead (death and Hades)

Matthew 24.37

As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man (Christ/Beth)

Noah wore this t-shirt... a depiction of Noah gathering one male and one female of every animal to put onto the Ark. The stalk represents a baby, meaning the animal line will continue.

The music box of 510 went into Noah's Ark/barn and played the gospel good news after the rain stopped. 🌈

The end is the beginning, and the beginning is the end. ♾️

Venus and Jake are very much a one cat, one dog family. I get the vibe from Venus that she loves all animals, but she just vibes with cats better and Jake is so dog coded. Definitely one to get a pure bred golden retriever or bring home a stray. No in between.

So when he tells Venus "I'm ready for a new addition to our family."

Which of course screws with Venus a bit because she just got used to the idea of being known, and now he just expects her to say 'yes' to having a child???

"I was looking at some dog shelters-"

She definitely has to be the strong one while he's planning a jail break. "Jake, I'm sorry, but we can't take them all."

And all she sees is his eyes and pure white smile next to a chihuahua that's vibrating into the next dimension. "Don't do that."

"Got you to cave once. I can wear you down again. And I've got some adorable friends this time."

And when he finally does take one to a room so that way they can play with them for a bit, he definitely tells the dog "go to your mama." And venus will never admit to the way it made her feel.

Venus loves all animals, but is drawn to cats due to how independent and selective they are. She and Jake adopt another kitty and name them Pastrami. Pastrami and Rugelach instantly bond.

Jake grew up on a ranch, so he loves any and all animals. I see him and Bob bonding over that (I headcanon that Bob grew up on a farm in the Midwest).

Oh God, he would ask it that way.

"Jake, that's a huge commitment and we just got married, don't you think we need some time to settle?" Venus asks, trying not to lose her shit.

Jake just nods like it's no big deal, "I get that. But I was looking at some dog shelters-"

Venus doesn't listen to the rest of his sentence because she's just thinking oh thank God he's talking about animals.

More cuteness underneath

"We are starting with one dog Jake. Our townhouse isn't big enough-"

"We can just buy a house," Jake shrugs as he continues to pet the German Shepard who has made their home into Jake's lap.

"You seriously want to buy a house just to have more dogs?"

"Not just more dogs. Eventually," Jake's cheeks begin to turn red, "Kids too."

Venus is doing everything not to appear flustered, "Slow down cowboy. Let's focus on a dog today."

They find this pitbull terrier mix. She had puppies before, and now that her pups have been adopted, the shelter wants her to find her forever home. Her name is Nellie and Jake is already thinking of what Jewish food they can rename her.

"That means she'll be good with other dogs and kids," Jake points out.

They take Nellie/Bagel (Jake's idea) into the playroom. Bagel is very curious about Jake (it's his Golden Retriever energy), whereas Venus is more calm and gives Bagel some space so they don't get overwhelmed.

"Alright Bagel, go to your mama!" Jake points to Venus and all of a sudden, she feels her stomach fluttering and a warm feeling washing over her.

Bagel's eyes perk up and she immediately goes over to Venus, who stretches out an open hand to let her sniff.

They take Bagel home that day.

Six months later, Jake comes home carrying a little black Labrador puppy.

"Jacob Seresin, why do you have a dog?!" Venus asks. Bagel's tail is wagging as she waits at Jake's feet.

"They were running along the highway and I knew a big storm was coming! I couldn't just leave them out there!" Venus can't even get mad because the dog is super cute and Jake's actions are secretly making her melt.

They do take the dog to the shelter but no one comes first the sweet little thing. And after seeing Bagel take such good care of them, Jake and Venus really have no choice but to adopt Lox.

Melinda → like i just don't. i don't understand why piper broke p tradition. it just doesn't make any sense to me. so i would have her go for a p name i think in canon melinda and pj are close in age and phoebe got a premonition of her daughter named after prue and i like that so imma keep it so im renaming melinda to Penelope Melinda Halliwell, and she'd go by nellie instead of mellie haha

PJ → Prudence Johanna Halliwell. goes by pj. banger of a name.

Parker → Persephone Ella Halliwell. goes by percy. middle name is, yes, derived from Cinderella

Peyton → Petunia Grace Halliwell but they call her little petal. bc petunia is a flower. get it?

Tamora & Kat → i'm actually torn on whether or not i want paige to follow tradition. i get why many don't have her do that but i think finding the baby blanket and your parents only had one request -- that your name started with a p. i think she'd want to go for that. so i think the twins would be Paxton and Parker. OR. they're named castor and pollux and we do an astrology episode and they go by cassie and polly. kat → Castor Astrid Mitchell and tam → Pollux Stella Mitchell.
