Yemeni, Iranian, and Palestinian authorities have spoken out in support of US university students and faculty members who have been targeted by brutal police repression for the past two weeks during mobilizations calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza. The leader of Yemen's ruling Ansarallah movement, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, said during a speech on 25 April that the US government “does not respect their laws, their constitution, or any headlines they raise and brag about,” stressing that there is a “concerted effort” from Washington to silence a movement that “has begun to wake up to the horror of what is happening in occupied Palestine.” “With the demonstrations and sit-ins at prominent US universities, the US support for the Israeli enemy became clear, as authorities dealt with the demonstrations and protests … in a bad manner that goes beyond all considerations,” the Yemeni resistance leader added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also condemned the crackdown witnessed across several universities. “The suppression and violent treatment of the American police and security forces against professors and students protesting the genocide and war crimes of the Israeli regime in various universities of the United States is deeply worrying,” Iran's top diplomat said via social media, adding that this repression is an extension of “Washington's full-fledged support for the Israeli regime and clearly shows the double standard policy and contradictory attitude of the American government towards freedom of expression.”

In Palestine, officials from Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), as well as student organizations in the Gaza Strip, issued statements supporting the grassroots movement that has taken over about two dozen university campuses in the US. “We, the students of Gaza, salute the students of Columbia University, Yale University, New York University, Rutgers University, the University of Michigan, and dozens of universities across the United States who are rising in solidarity with Gaza and to put an end to the Zionist–US genocide against our people in Gaza,” a statement from students organizations in Gaza reads. “From here in Gaza, we see you and salute you. Your actions and activism matter, especially in the heart of the empire, in the United States … It is clear that a new generation is rising that will no longer accept Zionism, racism, and genocide and that stands with Palestine and our liberation from the river to the sea,” the statement adds. For their part, the PFLP called on Palestinian and Arab students to “rise for Gaza following the example of American universities.” “Palestinian and Arab universities must take the initiative and break the barrier of silence, following the example of American universities which have ignited an intifada within the campus for the victory of the blood of our Palestinian people, and in rejection of the continuing American support for the zionist entity,” the PFLP statement reads. In a similar vein, Hamas politburo member Izzat al-Rishq said that the government of US President Joe Biden “violates individual rights and the right to expression, and arrests university students and faculty members because they reject the genocide that our Palestinian people are subjected to in the Gaza Strip at the hands of the neo-Nazi Zionists, without the slightest feeling of shame about the legal value represented by the students and university professors.” “The Biden administration, which is a partner in the brutal war on our Palestinian people, does not want to acknowledge that [the US public has] discovered the truth about the Nazi entity and is siding with human values and standing on the right side of history. Today’s students are the leaders of the future, and their suppression today means an expensive electoral bill that the Biden administration will pay sooner or later.”

In the aftermath of Prigozhin’s media empire collapse, former employees spoke out about the dark tactics employed, including hiring individuals to portray “victims of Ukrainian Armed Forces” in staged reports that underpinned Russia’s fake pretext for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine — its Big Lie about alleged “genocide in Donbas.”

Following the unsuccessful mutiny of the Wagner Private Military Company, its financier Evgeny Prigozhin had closed down his media empire, including the infamous troll factory. This included Prigozhin’s media holding “Patriot” and such media outlets as RIA FAN, Politics Today, Economics Today, Nevskiye Novosti, and Narodniye Novosti.

Employees of the Prigozhin media were long unable to disclose the state of affairs in the editorial offices, as they were all forced to sign non-disclosure agreements. However, now, they speak. Russian media website Bumaga interviewed several former employees of “Patriot,” who revealed unknown details about its operation and propaganda tactics.

Notably, one RIA FAN journalist who worked with military coverage from Donbas told that the source files of the interview often contained off-screen instructions for the heroes of the reports, who were hired people coached by an off-camera operator who offered advice on how to say their pre-memorized lines more realistically (and with more propaganda effect):

“Most of the people who were portrayed in such stories as ‘victims’ of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were stand-ins, hired individuals. These characters repeated pre-memorized lines to themselves, trying to ‘squeeze out a tear.’ They were also instructed off-camera by the operator to speak ‘slower’ or to ‘repeat this moment again’,” told the former employee of RIA FAN.

This admission is crucial, as it offers more proof of how Russia fabricated its 9-year-long propaganda narrative about the Ukrainian “Nazis” deliberately attacking the “people of Donbas.”

Other famous debunked examples of this narrative included a story that state TV channel Pervyi Kanal ran on 12 July 2014, showing an “interview” with a woman who claimed to have witnessed the crucifixion of a three-year child by Ukrainian nationalists. However, bloggers and journalists from Ukraine and Russia could quickly prove that the woman was an actor and the story was a hoax.

Another well-known debunked “Donbas genocide” propaganda case happened in April 2015. The Russian TV channel NTV claimed that a ten-year-old girl had been killed by Ukrainian government forces in eastern Ukraine, echoing the disinformation story about the crucified boy from the year before. A BBC reporter working on the ground in the conflict managed to prove that also this story was a hoax. Since Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014 and occupied part of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas, Russian propaganda has meticulously demonized Ukraine and the Ukrainian Army. One of the grand narratives of its propaganda claimed that the Ukrainian forces attempting to liberate their lands from the Russian invaders were actually “punishing” the Ukrainians in occupied Donbas for their alleged “choice” to be with Russia, which is how Russia called its fake “referenda” that led to the creation of two puppet republics, the Luhansk and Donetsk “People’s Republics.” The revelation from Prigozhin’s media empire’s employees reveals how this narrative was forged, one fake report played by actors after the other.

The final result was the creation of Russia’s Big Lie, the alleged “Donbas genocide,” which Putin used to launch an invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.

Bumaga’s material revealed other fascinating details about the operations of Prigozhin’s media empire.

Former “Patriot” employees revealed the security checks and the workplace atmosphere to Bumaga anonymously. According to a former employee, each media was allocated a floor, and smaller editorials sat together.

“They did not check me on a polygraph, but I heard stories from newcomers. They were taken to a room where security service specialists worked with them and asked questions,” said the source.

These questions, asked during a “lie detector” test, intended to weed out any drug addicts or Russian opposition sympathizers, especially fans of Alexei Navalny, another source told Bumaga.

Moreover, the media empire had extensive surveillance measures in place. An anonymous source disclosed that they “followed electronic passes, cameras, and all records from computer screens were broadcast to the security service.” When Patriot was just opened, a special department existed in the holding that was engaged in custom materials about the opposition.

Two former employees of the Patriot holding, in a conversation with Bumaga, claimed that everyone at the “troll factory” knew that the goal of Evgeny Prigozhin’s media was to create informational noise to “clog the agenda.”

“Information noise was generated along with the implementation of Prigozhin’s interests. While some [journalists] distracted people with the problems of other countries, with these reports from Africa and so on, with our local celebrities and reviews of dumb movies, others, on the front lines, were brainwashing people with materials from the ‘Special Operation Zone‘,” a former journalist of RIA FAN told, referring to Russia’s codename for its invasion of Ukraine, where Prigozhin’s Wagner PMC played a key role.

Now, the former employees of Prigozhin’s once-famed “troll factory,” who sowed disinformation in Russia and abroad, are left without a job. Luckily for them, prominent Russian media managers are stepping in to give them decent work in top Russian outlets:

“Dmitry Sherikh, the head of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Union of Journalists, has volunteered to help the employees of the ‘Troll Factory’ find jobs: ‘The Russian Union of Journalists will, whenever possible, appeal to the heads of other media outlets to help find employment for our dismissed colleagues, as well as provide other information support.’ The chief editor of ‘Moskovsky Komsomolets in Petersburg,’ Timofey Shabarshin, who is also the former head of ‘Nevsky News’ (up until 2021), also agreed to welcome the colleagues. Vladimir Yagudaev [an SMM manager from Prigozhin’s media empire who talked with Bumaga – Ed.] does not know if the Union of Journalists helped his former colleagues, but he notes: ‘Certain chief editors have begun to hire the most interesting employees into St. Petersburg publications. However, this is a limited contingent.'”

Located near St. Petersburg, Prigozhin’s troll factory, also known as Internet Research Agency (IRA), was one of the more-studied elements of the Russian propaganda machine. To achieve its goals, the troll factory employed fake accounts registered on major social networks, online media sites, and video hosting services. It expanded threefold in 2018. The troll factory’s employees were given messages they should push in social media and online debates in what a US indictment called “activities as a strategic communications campaign with an emphasis on target group awareness.”

I've noticed that sometimes people have a sort of knee-jerk revulsion to the idea of studying Lovecraft. Which I can completely understand, honestly. It's well known by now that the man was a turbo racist and general reactionary dick for at least the majority of his life, something that is not remotely concealed in his actual writing. This is a man who thought it was clever and funny to write poetry degrading Black people's humanity.

However, it seems to me that it's a bit too quick to discard him altogether because of his bigotry. Not because his writing has some special redeeming quality that needs to be preserved or anything - sure, I like some of his concepts, but it's not like they hold any transcendent importance.

No, the reason why I think it's important not to discard Lovecraft is because of the educational value of his works. Specifically, the way he expressed his intense bigotry through specific tropes and ideas that are still in play by racists, homophobes, transphobes, etc. today.

Because Lovecraft was a turbo racist, but he wasn't a fringe racist. He believed the same awful shit that a lot of people still believe to this day, and Nazis and other right-wing bigots like to cling to in particular. Some of his ideas are pretty well-known by laypeople at this point, like the concept of racial inferiority, while others are a little more obscure unless you've already been digging into the topic - e.g. the myth of "Roman decadence" (the myth wherein Rome fell because the people forgot how to culture and also totally legalized gay marriage you guys), or the tendency to use fictional 'races' as metaphors/stand-ins for their hatred of some real demographic (he did this more than once).

And the other reason I would not dismiss Lovecraft out of hand is because his work has had an unavoidable impact on the world of science fiction and fantasy. Some of people's very favoritest tropes were directly popularized by this guy, and that's not something that you can will away just by declaring that he was racist and is therefore irrelevant; in fact, doing so just makes it harder for everyone to recognize when those tropes are smuggling some serious bigotry of their own.

A good deal of present day discourse problems center around the bad use of terms.

For example: TERF stands for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. Which means, if you're not anti-trans, but a radical feminist, you're not a TERF. If you're not a feminist at all, you're not a TERF, even if you're anti-trans.

Nazi does not just mean 'anti-semite', it's the name for a specific political ideology with major socialist authoritarian ideals, WHO ALSO are anti-semites. If you idealize the group, you MIGHT be a neo-Nazi, or at least creepy as fuck, but you're not ACTUALLY a nazi. Lots of very very notably non-Nazi groups exist that idealize the Nazi's, from the PLO to the Black Hebrew Israelites, and my god would NONE of them have survived under Hitler.

Treating terms as casual fill-ins will get you fought against, because people who know better know 1) you're lying, and 2) You don't care to say the truth, or even know what you're talking about.

It doesn't mean your enemy is a bigot, it just means you're shit at the discourse.

I'm just shooting the shit because it's one am and I can't sleep but sometimes I'm a little bit sad that the Thalmor are written as cartoonishly evil nazi stand-ins because it preemptively de-claws their gripe against Talos worship, which is actually very valid when you think about it in terms of the literal deification of The Guy who was known as a killer of mer.

And it's weird how reoccuring of a theme it is in the Nords' self-mythology, too, because that's something Talos shares with Ysgramor, who went on a bloody genocide spree, ultimately, because the nords claimed a right to Skyrim they felt superseded that of the snow elves, which is just weird, when you think about it, because as far as I know there's nothing to indicate they had even been there before Ysgramor's time.

You find Ysgramor in Sovngarde. There's no reason to believe Talos isn't a real god, in-universe, either. But fuck, man, if I was an elf and I saw a dude who hunted my people for sport and wasn't ever sorry about it ascend to divinity, I would be mad, too. Mad enough to tear the world to ribbons, too, if I could.

In TES lore, belief maketh gods, sorta. And sometimes I wonder if the Thalmor want to stop Talos worship not because of the whole tower theory, but merely because - imagine it - Talos being a god means there is a god above that hates you, not for who you are, but what you are. And that's terrifying.

The Thalmor are not nice. They're not sympathetic. They do horrible thing. But shit, man, who wouldn't, when faced with the threat of divine annihilation? One that you know half the world endorsed with a smile, out of pride, even when it meant deifying your murderer? I would be ugly, too. I would be petty and mean and cruel, because that's how scared people behave. That's what happens to people you tell you don't think they really are people.

Anyway I have a lot of feelings about the god-emperor-conquerer narrative in TES and its narrative perspective. Probably will delete later

Boycott Hogwarts Legacy

For those who aren't aware, Hogwards Legacy, an upcoming AAA title is being released this Friday, February 10th. Please consider joining your transgender siblings in boycotting its release - while you can separate the art from the artist in many situations, there are times when those artists, like JK Rowling and Kanye West, actively contribute to hate, violence, and anti-transgender legislation and it is simply not possible to separate art from the artist. Supporting Hogwarts Legacy during its release WILL back JK Rowling's beliefs and go directly towards her funding anti-transgender movements harming trans people in the United Kingdom.

Within the last month alone, JK Rowling has tweeted the following to her 14 million followers:

The game may look good because it's a well-polished AAA game, but the story itself has STRONG anti-Semitic themes - as the protagonist, you're tasked with stopping a goblin uprising and goblins of the wizarding world have been well-established as stand-ins for Jewish people. JK Rowling heavily based goblins in Hogwarts on Jewish stereotypes created by Nazis - Rowling has intentionally characterized her goblins as having big noses, working in banks, and known for being greedy. It's not a coincidence. Hogwarts Legacy has you play on the oppressors' side and prevent a literal slave uprising.

Don't buy it.

The people who worked on Hogwarts Legacy have already been paid - your purchase during its initial release isn't saving some starving artist, it funds JKR and makes her and her followers believe her views have value. Simply do not buy the game - don't donate a certain portion to trans charities and /then/ buy Hogwarts Legacy. By buying the game, you justify anti-trans laws and hatred - JK Rowling believes that her wizarding world is so amazing, so well-written that people will always support her no matter how anti-trans and anti-Semitic she is. Prove her wrong.

Don't stream it.

During the boycott, don't create or consume content supporting it. Creators on Twitch are already planning to boycott a mandated advert for Hogwarts Legacy that will play during ALL streams - even during trans and Jewish streams. The better content about Hogwarts Legacy does, the more people will purchase the game during the boycott.

Play alternatives.

a reason why the current captain america comics + sentinel of liberty feel so Out Of Character + damaging to the characters or sometimes feel created out of spite for the existing Bucky & Steve + feel like they're more worried about having every combination of characters punch e/o + mainly beat up the flattened and OOC stand-ins for spectacle,

the reason is probably because once one goes online they can see the people who worked on it announcing their work who are people who literally and openly despise the characters and have years of hate tweets against them, who even threw reference their long standing reputation for hating the characters in their announcement post 🙃

that and the main guy working on the admitting he doesn't like reading comics but listed an exception that's such a wildly different genre/style .... which honestly explains a lot

no wonder so much of the Cap comics feel so meanspirited/edgy/antagonistic towards the main characters whose stories we're trying to follow, so many of the people working on them hate Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers and mangle their characters so much and flatten them to cartoonish levels

and sadly most "fans" don't even care how the characters are treated and praise SoL for having good art.. which okay on a technical level I agree but whoever ordered the character designs must also be part of the higher-ups at Marvel who decided Steve & Bucky's characterization should be axed, because their designs keep making them more and more ugly and tropish than actually them, and in the context of the everything else it feels purposeful !

I can't help thinking of that old analogy about Colonialism, that it's like moving in to squat in someone else's house, saying 'wow I love how you decorated it!!' but then... redecorating to make it a carbon copy of their own house, anyway??

The people given control of these important blue-collar Jewish characters don't give a shit about their origins, why the characters are supposed to be a certain way, to express certain values (or that to express the opposite makes a nonsense of their very design). And certainly don't want to hear that it was those very values, antithetical to their own, which made the characters popular in the first place.

(A broke Jewish Spiderman?! But how is a rich Christian supposed to find him relatable? A Cap who punches Nazis, befriends minorities, protects Jews, defends his out gay best friend, fucks up corrupt businessmen, and doesn't give a shit about chasing pussy? But what will the cishet shareholder bros think?!)

They just want to have IP that matches the Company Brand -- a Straight Man for a Straight Woman (with the promise of a future Nuclear Family in Suburbia), expressing values that won't alienate potential right wing customers.

And Hollywood's much the same, which is why they picked the (ugly, mean-spirited, OOC) Ultimates run of comics for Whedon to adapt, and not another.

It's kind of bonkers how the Byzantine empire is just... absent... from so many pop culture historical narratives. Starting from "The Roman Empire fell in the 5th century CE" and moving on from there.

It truly is. I know I'm hardly objective, but it's very deeply frustrating to me as someone who has always found the Byzantine Empire's history very compelling (how many "in the medieval era, Europe x" takes can account for the existence of Irene of Athens or, idk, Constantinople???) and as the grandchild of a living Greek woman.

My conspiracy theory is that a lot of different people feel like they are in some way the "true" heirs to ancient Greece and ancient Rome, directly or indirectly, and the ongoing existence of a Greek-speaking Roman empire with a large population of Greek people and a remarkable capital city poses an intrinsic challenge to that belief. So the typical approach is either to downplay their authenticity as Greeks or Romans, or just completely ignore their existence, and it creates a cycle in which ignoring them becomes genuine ignorance of almost everything about them and their history (though some people do seem actively hostile or existentially threatened, like the guy who kickstarted this whole thing).

I remember reading someone's aside that people talking about Greek beliefs and religion are almost never talking about the Greek Orthodox church that most living Greeks belong to. It seems like modern Greeks can only ever be a) stand-ins for ancient Greeks who've done basically nothing since the Roman conquest or b) not authentically Greek, either because of ethnic purity logic (which has an extremely nasty history that includes Nazi atrocities but also, like, weird arguments about how Greece shouldn't be in the EU) or an insistence on cultural discontinuity that can justify how proprietary non-Greeks can be about ancient Greek artifacts and culture. And this is extended in odd ways to the Byzantines, except when people want to act like the fall of Constantinople was some unprecedented collective European tragedy lala what Fourth Crusade.

It's also strange to me because ... I study early modern literature, and I was required to read ancient Greek and Roman sources because they're so critically important to the western European concept of "the Renaissance" and the fall of Constantinople and arrival of Byzantine refugees in western Europe with what they could bring with them benefited western Europe in that respect. But the Renaissance is common knowledge and hugely romanticized by everyone from left-wing post-modern New Historicists to far-right white supremacists, while the thousand+ years of the Byzantine Empire is often this pop culture afterthought if that.

It's Fictional Throwdown Friday!

This Week's Fighters...

Pearl vs Homelander!

Conditions:

Composite of both comics and video game Homelander.

Scenario:

Homelander and Pearl get into an argument over a blown call in Steven and Ryan’s soccer game. Things escalate when Homelander calls her a slur and Pearl punches him.

Analysis: Homelander

Imagine a corporation that has a complete monopoly on popular culture. Imagine a company so powerful that it could flood the human consciousness with media endlessly, drowning the world in nostalgia filtered pop culture plastic for all of time. Now imagine that such a company could create their own superheroes.

Who would they choose to be their greatest hero? What does Disney's idea of the perfect pop culture icon look like? Well, according to The Boys, he looks like the evilest Superman clone this side of Irredeemable: Homelander.

Vought, massive multimedia conglomerate of The Boys universe, created the Homelander to be the most iconic, beloved, pure blooded American hero of all time. By subjecting a young, pre-bred infant to their proprietary Compound V, Vought was able to raise Homelander to be the most powerful superhero of all time. This is a mistake mist of them wouldn't live to regret.

See, Homelander was never treated as a human being when he was being raised. Vought viewed him as nothing but a product and treated him as such. This caused Homelander to grow up into a giant self-centered manchild with an endless need for validation and the belief that he could do no wrong. This meant that Homelander became the world's most powerful superhero and it's most vile threat at the same time.

As your stand Superman clone, Homelander has all of the standard Cape powers. He can fly at supersonic speeds, shoot heat beams from his eyes that can split airplanes, and, in the comics, scream loud enough to completely deafen anyone nearby. Meanwhile, his superhuman strength is completely unmatched by anyone on Earth.

In the comics, it has been noted that Homelander is completely immune to every single weapon known to mankind, no matter how powerful. That would include weapons as powerful as the Tsar Bomb, a 50 megaton nuke that Soviets at the time feared could've potentially altered Earth's biosphere and ended the world. He's faster than Supes who can fly to the moon and back in seconds and Billy Butcher himself describes him as being able to outrun Tachyons, a particle that can only move faster than light.

Despite, or perhaps because of, this overwhelming strength, Homelander is a cunning manipulator when it comes to his PR. Despite his racist, misogynistic tendencies and his murderous, sexually abusive past times, Homelander is still seen as the greatest, most popular superhero in Earth's history. It is, however, all skin deep. Homelander is in truth, an abusive, self centered monster.

Homelander's atrocities include, but are not limited to, pushing a suicidal girl off of a roof, killing children to cover up the secret of Compound V, willing dating a Nazi, and raping the wife of a man who insulted him at an office Christmas Party. There's evil and then there's Homelander. He owes the world nothing and he knows it. As the strongest man on the planet, no one could stop him from simply ending the world ine day if he so chose. In the comics, the government was helpless to stop him from conquering the White House while, in the show, Homelander was powerful enough to defeat Soldier Boy, one of the only heroes powerful enough to threaten him, on his own, only retreating when he got outnumbered.

Having said that, he does not handle it well when his atrocities back fire against him. Said rape directly lead to the man, Billy Butcher, putting together a squad to bring down Vought and all its corrupt Supes, going in to become one of the few things that could potentially threaten Homelander himself. This violent assault did net Homelander one thing though, a son he could call his own.

Homelander was genuinely ecstatic to see that his child inherited his abilities, as his son was the first thing in his life that was his and his alone. Do not pretend that this makes him any less monstrous, however. Homelander does not see his child-by-rape as a chance for a new beginning, but as an extension of his ego. Something that belongs to him. It is not a question of if Homelander loves his son, but if Ryan ends up any worse than his father.

Analysis: Pearl

What would you do if you were born into servitude? If all your life, you were nothing but an object to be owned. A thing to be bought. What would you do, if after centuries of a life spent like that, someone finally set you free? Well, if your name is Pearl, then you'd fall head over heels in love with them.

Pearls are the servant class of gem society. From the moment they sprout fully formed from the ground, they're handed off to high class gems to manage their needs and chores. Pearl originally belonged to White Diamond, the big ruler of all gemkind herself, but was handed down to the bratty little kid of the royal diamond family, Pink Diamond. You see, Pink.... "broke" her original Pearl.

Pink was very... innocent, for lack of a better term. She was childish, bratty, and unaware of the consequences of her actions at the best of times. That's why she was never trusted with running her own colony and expanding the Empire. She simply couldn't handle it... until her complaining finally annoyed her fellow Diamonds enough for them to give her her own planet: Earth.

It was there that Pink learned what colonization entailed: wiping the slate clean. Sucking all life from the Earth and leaving nothing behind. Disgusted, Pink took on the alias of Rose Quartz and staged a rebellion against herself, with Pearl as her dreaded sidekick, the terrifying Renegade Pearl.

Pearl idolized Rose for this. Feel in love with her deeply and completely, in a way she never knew she could feel about anyone before. So much so that, even as the consequences of Rose's actions feel down around them, Pearl held her up as something untouchable. Someone perfect.

These insecurities followed her years after the thousand year rebellion came to an end and even after Rose's death after that. Rose would give up her life to create a half human child and Rose would be tasked with raising him. An innocent young boy named Steven.

As one of the last three remaining Crystal Gems, Pearl is a deeply intelligent warrior, fighting on the front lines in a thousand year long war and continuing to fight dangerous superhuman beasts after that. She keeps a plethora or swords and spears stored in her gemstone, the very culmination of her being, which she can use to seal away objects and people. Her ambidextrousness and athleticism allows her to switch up strategies on the fly, fluidly dodging attacks with a dancer's grace, alternating between swords and spears on the fly, and summoning holograms of herself to train with her or assist in combat.

Pearl is skilled enough to train Connie Maheswaran up from a regular teenage girl into a nearly superhuman swordmaster who can cleave a car in half. Though it helps that her spears can shoot lasers from the tip. Not to mention all of her unique Gem powers. As a Gem, Pearl's body is actually a hard light inorganic construct that she can shapeshift to her will. She doesn't age, is completely immune to any human weaknesses like diseases, and she can regenerate her body from any amount of damage so long as her gemstone remains intact. Furthermore, she can trap and teleport opponents away with a bubble and fuse with any other willing Gem for an exponential boost in power.

In terms of power, Pearl and the rest of the Gems are strong enough to fight off s gisnt snow beast that created a massive city spanning blizzard. Creating a storm so massive would generate an energy equivalent to 25 Megatons of TNT.

In terms of speed, Pearl is fast enough to dodge lasers moving, needing to move at 25% light speed to do so.

It took a long time for Pearl to begin to process her grief and begin to see Rose for the flawed, nuanced person she actually was. Not helping matters how she and everyone else sort of treated Steven like a Rose 2.0, giving the poor boy a massive complex. But, as Steven did what his mother could not and brought peace between humanity and gemkind, Pearl grew and matured alongside him, redefining what it meant to be a Crystal Gem and learning how to always find a way to save the day.

Throwdown Breakdown:

This contest would be a wonderful demonstration of skill, experience, and intelligence going up against overwhelming raw power, but it would be a brief affair.

Homelander is coming in with a respectable stat advantage, being at least twice as strong and 4x as fast. While that would inspire his confidence, it would ultimately be his downfall.

Homelander's first response against an opponent he perceives himself as being superior too, which is what her being noticeably slower than him would imply in his mind, is too lazily tank their attacks and laser them down from a distance. This would give Pearl ample opportunity to use her clones to split his attention and take pot shots with her spears while closing the distance.

The fact that her shots are actually hurting him would establish her as an actual threat, prompting Homelander to retreat into the air while continuing his laser assault to keep her from overwhelming him. Unfortunately, Pearl's lack of experience, remarkable mobility, and Homelander's own lack of polish would allow her to either knock him down with a continuous barrage from multiple angles with her duplicates and drag him down to the ground by lunging up to his level.

Then, Pearl and all her clones dogpile Homelander into unconsciousness when he hits the dirt. While Homelander's superior speed might allow him to escape the dogpile, like he did against Soldier Boy, Butcher, and Huey, he'd likely just be looking to escape at this point to reassess the situation, rather than continue the fight, which would be a pretty clear admission of defeat. Regardless, I think it's more likely for Pearl to finish the job. Homelander is a sapient human and Pearl in unaware of his violent history, so she likely won't be willing to kill him, but she can still handily choke him out or knock him out from this position.

Even if Homelander played it smart and tried to snipe Pearl from orbit immediately, as he might if he had prior knowledge of her capabilities, he'd still by trying to shoot down multiple more skilled adversaries at once. He'd laser down one cluster of holo-Pearls, only for more to shoot him from his blindspot. Even if he does manage to bisect her, she'll be able to keep coming back so long as he doesn't realize he needs to target her gemstone, which he likely wouldn't with any degree of quickness.

All of this is while being generous enough to give Homelander the speed advantage. Only faster than light thing he has is an offhand comment from Butcher and if you really wanna go there, you could just as easily scale Pearl to Lapis to get her millions of times faster than light. Even high balling Homelander and low balling Pearl gets her the win.

Simply put, Pearl is a warrior who has outgrown most of her vices, while Homelander is a bully completely consumed by his.

This Throwdown's Winner is...

Pearl!
