Alvivecia Sithola

Or as I like to call her, Alvivecia Moon-and-Star

Part I

Grew up an orphan in Kvatch. Because that's ✨original✨

She got her name from one of the younger women at the orphanage. The woman had a copy of 2920 and found the names "Almalexia" and "Vivec" and just . . . smashed them together

Alvi is a chill nickname, but she'll turn you into a necromantic experiment if you call her Viki or Al

She taught herself to use magic when she was like ten cos she's smart like that

But she also had no idea what she was doing cos she was ten so 🤷🏻‍♀️

But yes when she was older and left the orphanage she ended up falling in with necromancers

That's why she was in the Imperial Prison, you see: seventeen counts of necromancy, grave robbing, and desecration of the dead — and that's just what they KNEW about! 😁

Is totally unaware until she's visited the Tribunal Temples a few times that necromancy is super detested in Dunmer culture

But it's really hard to stop using necromancy, especially when you're good at it, and Alvivecia was a right puppet master

She may or may not have desecrated more than one Ancestral Tomb just to watch the bones dance. It's very escapist

But necromancy isn't the only kind of magic Alvi is good at. She's brilliant at the entire school of Conjuration, but is an adept hand at both mysticism and restoration

"No recall or intervention can work in this place" but if she'd wanted them to? Just saying

When Caius Cosades sends her off to adventure and suggests joining the fighters' or mages' guilds, Alvivecia takes that suggestion and runs in a entirely different direction, and joins House Telvanni

Before she fell in with necromancers, she was totally burnt out by the Mages' Guild, but once on Vvardenfell, she'd heard things about the Telvanni

All good things, all good things . . .

Alvivecia had been apprenticed to Aryon for like six months before she went "oh snap" and went back to Cosades' house

Immediately he starts doling out missions to her

Caius doesn't have high expectations for Alvivecia. Sure he told her to go get some experience on Morrowind, but she just spent a half year hauled up with the Telvanni 🤦🏻‍♀️

At first the missions are all very mechanical to Alvivecia, sneak in here, kill people there, steal this, be given that

But Alvivecia's greatest blessing and curse is curiosity, and this leads her to nosing about the stuff she brings back to Cosades before actually giving it to him

And she tries to absorb everything

Aside from innate curiosity, Alvivecia is a fast learner

She forms way too many ideas about the Nerevarine situation before Caius Cosades can even tell her the Emperor believes her to be the Nerevarine

Like you hear stuff when destiny is on the air and superstition is in the minds of everyone around you, and Alvi was always one to pick up on these things and yeet them into hysterics soup

But we're not there yet

When Cosades dismisses her again, she spends her timing scouring through books in Tel Vos and Tel Naga. She doesn't really find anything about the Nerevarine, though

Aryon doesn't answer her questions. Baladas Demnevanni won't. It's making her leery

Neither does Master Neloth. However, Alvi does make Neloth tea. And he actually likes it

He still complains over two centuries later how no one makes the tea right like Alvivecia. True story 😎☕

Cosades next sends her to Vivec City. Hitherto she hadn't actually been to Vivec City and so subsequently gets very lost on numerous occasions

She eventually encounters a High Elf from the Mages' Guild who's "from out of town, but knows a thing or two about navigating the cantons"

This is Oromis. He is the elder brother of the future Hero of Kvatch. He may or may not eventually become Sheogorath he does but right now he's just trying to get Alvivecia to loosen up

They're just so adorable together, okay? Okay

ANYWAY

Alvivecia's on the fast track now. She's getting way more sketchy cult info than she ever expected to get into when she first came to Vvardenfell. But it's not the weirdest thing she's done. Trust me

Working on connections with an Ashlander informant might be pretty out there, but through a shared love of song and poetry, she and Hassaur hit it off. Does she get the info for Cosades? Yes. Does she agree to go find Hassaur's lost son? By Talos . . . y e s

And if the guy she finds locked up by the Sixth House is kinda hot? Well, that's no one's business but hers

Regardless, sons are saved and handlers are happy, and that's all that matters, right?

Wrong!

Because apparently? The Emperor?? Actually thinks Alvivecia??? Could fulfill the Nerevarine Prophecy???? And she's supposed to just continue following orders without any time to process this?????

Nope, no time! Because Alvivecia must stock up on her gear at the fort because she's going backpacking into the wilderness toward Maar Gan

And yes, she does need the trama root she uses for tea and the kwama eggs she likes for breakfast, but she doesn't know that, so there will be a backtracking backpack shopping trip when she finally — FINALLY — finds those Ashaldners

This whole Nerevarine business is almost as exhausting as being a member of House Telvanni where every mage lord and sundry loads her with their outlandish grocery lists

(It's okay, Alvivecia! It's about to get so much worse! 😁)

Goddess Lakshmi—bestower of power, wealth and sovereignty

Draped in red saree, bedecked with gold ornaments, seated on a lotus, pot in hand, flanked by white elephants, the image of Lakshmi adorns most Hindu homes and business establishments.

Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, luxury, beauty, fertility, and auspiciousness. She holds the promise of material fulfilment and contentment. She is described as restless, whimsical yet maternal, with her arms raised to bless and to grant. For centuries Hindus have invoked her thus:

Beautiful goddess seated on a chariot, Delighted by songs on lustful elephants, Bedecked with lotuses, pearls and gems, Lustrous as fire, radiant as gold, Resplendent as the sun, calm as the moon, Mistress of cows and horses — Take away poverty and misfortune Bring joy, riches, harvest and children.

The world may have changed, but the thirst for material comfort continues to form the core of most human aspirations.

Shri—the sacred name

The popularity of Lakshmi can be gauged by the fact that her sacred name—Shri. Shri is written atop most documents and spoken before addressing a god, a teacher, a holy man or any revered individual. The word evokes amongst other things: grace, affluence, abundance, auspiciousness, authority.

When the word is spoken or written, an aura of holiness is established. Whatever follows the word is imbued with divine blessing. Married men and women are addressed as Shriman and Shrimati as they have Lakshmi’s blessings to harness the wealth of the world to support family and sustain society. Ascetics are not addressed as Shriman as they have renounced worldly riches; unmarried men and women are not addressed as Shriman and Shrimati as they are still in preparation for the householder’s life.

Just as the word ‘aum’ is associated with the mystical side of life, the word ‘shri’ is associated with the material side of existence.

Widespread appeal

The practice of personifying the beauty and bounty of earth as a goddess was prevalent in all ancient cultures.

The Greeks had Core, the corn-goddess, who was known to Romans as Demeter. The Egyptians had Isis, Sumerians had Innana, Babylonians had Ishtar, Persians had Anahita and Vikings had Freia. Shri-Lakshmi is the Hindu form of the timeless mother-goddess who nurtures and nourishes all life.

In India, not only Hindus but also Buddhists and Jains adore Lakshmi. Buddhism and Jainism are primarily monastic orders that turned away from Vedic rituals and Brahmanical dogmas about 2,500 years ago. They, however, could not abandon this delightful goddess.

In the Buddhist Jatakas, there are tales of men and women who request the goddess Lakshmi to drive away the goddess of misfortune, Kalakanni. Images of Kubera, the pot-bellied yaksha-king and treasurer of the gods, who is closely associated with Lakshmi, adorn most Buddhist shrines.

In holy Jain texts, it is said when an exalted soul like a Tirthankara is about to be born his mother dreams of many auspicious things, including the goddess Shri. Symbols of wealth and royal power commonly associated with Lakshmi are auspicious to both Buddhists and Jains. These include: the pot, a pile of gems, a throne, a flywhisk, a conch, a fish, a parasol, nagas, yakshas, a footstool, a horse, an elephant, a cow, and the wish-fulfilling tree.

An ancient goddess

Shri-Lakshmi has a long history testified by the fact that her first hymn, the Shri Shukta, was added to the Rig Veda, the oldest and most revered of Hindu scriptures, somewhere between 1000 and 500 BC.

Considering her popularity amongst Buddhists and Jains, it has been proposed that her worship may predate the Vedic culture and may have developed independently before she was brought into the Vedic, Buddhist and Jain folds.

Scholars are of the view that initially the words Shri and Lakshmi referred to anything that was auspicious or brought good luck or bestowed riches and power. Later the two words were personified into two goddesses who eventually merged. Thus, Shri-Lakshmi came into being.

Fragmentary verses in the Shatapatha Brahmana, written not long after the Vedas, talks of the birth of Lakshmi from the mouth of Prajapati to provide the inhabitants of the cosmos food, clothing, shelter, and all things that make life more comfortable. She also offered wisdom, strength, beauty, luck, sovereignty and splendour—the good things in life.

Stories of Lakshmi first appeared in the epics Ramayana and Mahabharta, that were composed between 300 BC and 300 AD, a period that witnessed the waning popularity of Vedic gods and the rise of gods who offered moksha such as Shiva and Vishnu. Gods and demons fought over her and both strove to churn her out of the ocean of milk. As folk heroes such as Rama and Krishna were viewed as incarnations of Vishnu, their consorts Sita, Radha and Rukmini became increasingly identified with Lakshmi. In the Harivamsa, appendix to the Mahabharata, Manmatha, the god of love, lust and fertility, was described as her son.

The mythology of Lakshmi acquired full form in the Puranas, chronicles of gods, kings and sages that were compiled between 500 and 1500 AD. In them, the goddess came to be projected as one of the three primary forms of the supreme mother-goddess, the other two being Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, and Kali or Durga, the goddess of power. Lakshmi was visualised both as an independent goddess and as Vishnu’s consort, seated on his lap or at his feet. Prithvi, the Vedic earth-goddess, became Bhoodevi in the Puranas and a manifestation of Lakshmi. In south India, the two goddesses were visualised as two different entities, standing on either side of Vishnu, Bhoodevi representing tangible wealth while Lakshmi or Shridevi representing intangible wealth. In north India, the two goddesses became one.

Images of Lakshmi started appearing around the third century BC in sculptures found in Kausambi, in north India, and on coins issued during the reign of the Gupta dynasty around the fourth century AD. She became a favourite of kings as more and more people believed she was the bestower of power, wealth and sovereignty. Separate shrines to Lakshmi within the precincts of Vishnu temples may have been built as early as the seventh century; such shrines were definitely in existence by the 10th century AD.

Fickle and independent

Nowadays, Hindus accept Lakshmi as the eternal consort of Vishnu, the preserver of the world. In her long history, however, the goddess has been associated with many other deities. According to Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas, the goddess Lakshmi first lived with the demons before the gods acquired her. She graced asuras such as Hiranayaksha, Hiranakashipu, Prahalad, Virochana and Bali, rakshasas such as Ravana and yakshas such as Kubera before she adorned the court of Indra, king of devas, the most renowned of Vedic gods. Cities of the asuras (Hiranyapura), yakshas (Alakapuri), rakshasas (Lanka) and nagas (Bhogavati) have all been described as cities of gold, Lakshmi’s mineral manifestation.

Within the Vedic pantheon, Lakshmi was linked with many gods, especially those associated with water bodies: Indra, the rain-god (bestower of fresh water); Varuna, the sea-god (source of all water); Soma, the moon-god (waxer and waner of tides). Indra’s wife Sachi was also known as Puloma, which is the name of an asura-woman suggesting entry of Lakshmi from the world of asuras into world of devas.

As the Vedic gods waned into insignificance around the fifth century BC, two gods came to dominate the classical Hindu worldview: the world renouncing hermit-god Shiva and the world affirming warrior-god Vishnu. Lakshmi was briefly associated with Shiva before she became the faithful consort of Vishnu-Narayana, the ultimate refuge of man. With Vishnu, she was domesticated. No longer fleet footed, she sat demurely by his side, on his lap or at his feet.

The association with many gods has led to Lakshmi being viewed as fickle, restless and independent. Sociologists view the mythology of Lakshmi’s fickleness as indicative of her cult’s resistance to being assimilated with mainstream Hinduism. Even today there is tension between the mythology of Lakshmi as an independent goddess and her mythology as Vishnu’s consort. Philosophers choose to view the fickleness and independence of Lakshmi as an allegory for the restlessness of fortune. More often than not, there are no rational explanations for fortune and misfortune. Good times come without warning and leave as suddenly.

Shri Vaishnava tradition

In the twelfth century AD, a new form of Vaishnavism called Shri-Vaishnavism evolved in South India. Like other Vaishnava orders, it visualised Vishnu as the embodiment of the supreme divine principle. However, this order was unique as it refused to acknowledge Vishnu independently. It insisted on the presence of Lakshmi beside him.

For Shri-Vaishnava scholars, such as Vedanta Deshika, Lakshmi is indispensable while approaching Vishnu. He represents righteousness; she represents compassion. She is like a mother intervening between a stern father (God) and an errant son (the devotee).

Maha-Lakshmi, the great goddess

In Tantrik texts, which were composed around the same time as the Puranas, Lakshmi acquired supreme importance. She was Maha-Lakshmi, the supreme goddess.

Lakshmi is often differentiated from Maha-Lakshmi. While the former is the consort of Vishnu and the goddess of wealth, Maha-Lakshmi is viewed as an autonomous entity, the supreme embodiment of the mother-goddess. When worshipped as Maha-Lakshmi, Lakshmi is not visualised as a beautiful goddess seated on a lotus, pot in hand, but like a virginal warrior-goddess riding a lion, much like Durga. This form of the goddess is especially popular in Maharashtra.

Ancient Pancharatra texts that adore Maha-Lakshmi consider her to be the root of all creation. In the beginning, they say, the cosmic soul—the unfathomable unmanifest Narayana—desired to create the cosmos. But he did not have the resources to do so. As he pondered over this problem, his dormant energy, his shakti, burst forth in a blinding light, manifesting as Maha-Lakshmi.

Maha-Lakshmi placed the seed of divine desire in the palm of her hand and unleashed the dynamic forces of creation until the three worlds took shape and all forms of life came forth.

In the Lakshmi Tantra, the goddess says: “I am inherent in existence. I am the inciter, the potential that takes shape. I manifest myself. I occupy myself with activity and finally dissolve myself. I pervade all creations with vitality, will and consciousness. Like ghee that keeps a lamp burning, I lubricate the senses of living beings with the sap of my consciousness.”

Lakshmi is the divine power that transforms dreams into reality. She is prakriti, the perfect creation: self-sustaining, self-contained Nature. She is maya, the delightful delusion, the dream-like expression of divinity that makes life comprehensible, hence worth living. She is shakti, energy, boundless and bountiful.

Chapter 6-2: A Dark Covenant

Kael'thas has secured the arcane observatories, and now awaits his next order from Garithos.

Shortly afterward, a messenger from the front arrives.

Only starting to, Kael?

We still have the arcane observatories providing vision of most of the map. Our objective is to take out the green undead base to the west.

Dragonhawk Rider: Blood elf warrior astride a flying dragonhawk. A strong air fighter with powerful special abilities.

Aerial Shackles: Binds an enemy unit in magical shackles, restraining them and dealing high damage over time. Requires channeling to maintain. Can only be cast on other air units, hence the name.

Cloud: Channels a cloud of obscuring mist that prevents enemy buildings from attacking in a small area.

This mission is made to showcase Dragonhawk Riders, much like the prior one was for Spellbreakers. We'll be getting a lot of use out of these guys. On a side note, I'm not actually sure whether the dragonhawk is a bird or a dragon.

Using the observatories, we can spot the objective right away. It's guarded by a level 7 Dreadlord and doesn't look like it'll fall easily.

Thanks to Garithos' order all human and dwarf units have left our army, forcing Kael to come up with some substitutes.

Swordsman: Basic blood elf melee fighter. Essentially the same as a Footman, but with a little more fancy flavor.

Archer: Basic blood elf ranged attacker. More or less the same as the Night Elf version, minus the Shadowmeld ability.

Engineer: Blood elf worker unit. Can do anything a Peasant can do, save turning into Militia. Has much snobbier voice lines.

We start this mission with four bases on the north and south coasts, all of which will be immediately lost. There's not really any opportunity to save them. Our main isn't hit by this attack, but our main also doesn't have a gold mine.

Some Naga units should help turn the tide of battle. Unfortunately, we can't produce more or replace these ones if lost.

Sea Witch: Mystical mercenary hero who wields the powers of the tides.

Forked Lightning: A lightning bolt that zaps multiple enemy units at once in a cone shape.

Frost Arrows: Similar to Searing Arrows, this adds extra damage and a cold effect to the Sea Witch's attack, but drains mana on every shot.

Mercenary heroes were introduced in the Frozen Throne expansion. They can be hired from the Tavern neutral building in multiplayer games. Since the campaign handles heroes differently, Taverns don't appear. However, some of the characters we encounter in the story belong to these neutral hero classes, and the Sea Witch is one.

Naga Royal Guard: Elite warrior of the naga. Similar to a Myrmidon, it has more health and attack power, plus access to powerful water-based spells.

Frost Bolt: A shard of ice that deals damage and stuns an enemy, similarly to Storm Bolt. Makes a distinctive sound when it hits, which was later reused as the freeze sound in Hearthstone.

Summon Sea Elemental: Summons a Sea Elemental, which is just a Water Elemental with a little more coral on it.

We only get one Royal Guard, and using him well is very important.

One thing I forgot to mention is that Priests and Sorceresses got a new look for the expansion, reflecting that they're blood elves rather than high elves.

The greens will mainly send attack waves to our main base by air, making Dragonhawks very helpful for fending them off.

I had my forces head south to take out the purple base and reclaim its gold mine. Dragonhawk Riders' Cloud helped to neutralize enemy towers.

It fell pretty easily.

Now that we have a source of income again, we can work on assaulting the green base. There's another purple base in our path to clear out first.

Destroying this one wasn't too bad either.

Lady Vashj learned her third ability here.

Mana Shield: A shield that causes damage to be redirected toward the Witch's mana rather than her health.

This is a very powerful defense, but it doesn't really synergize well with the other Sea Witch abilities.

The enemy hero showing up at my base is really bad news. However, I figured this would be a good time to attack their base, as the hero would be occupied with attacking mine.

This plan backfired hard. I lost both my main base and the attacking force, and didn't cause enough damage to bring down the greens completely.

I tried to rebuild at my expansion, but another assault from the undead sealed my doom.

RIP. Time to load from a checkpoint and try again.

This time, after destroying the second purple base I built my own in its place, and started building up my forces a bit more.

The Dreadlord assaulted my main again, but this time I was better prepared for it and managed to take him out.

As soon as he was gone, I went straight for his base.

This was still a struggle, but it went better than the last time I tried it.

There we go.

The blood elves' magic addiction is apparently what gives them their green eyes.

This conversation is interrupted by a Spellbreaker coming in with a message.

That might actually work. Edelgard with bonus damage against anything would be nuts. Although I feel like Edelgard desperately needs to get the first hit. If she takes a magic-based attack first, she’s probably dead.

On Names

Demigods and Semi-devils is a phrase that comes from Buddhist scripture. Many Mahayana scriptures describe how eight non-human beings looked on as Buddha preached to bodhisattvas and monks. In the Lotus Sutra, for example, it is said that these eight beings “beheld from afar the dragon’s daughter becoming a buddha”. These eight mystical beings may resemble humans, but they are not human. Chief among them are the Deva and the Naga; the other six are the Yaksha, Gandharva, Asura, Garuda, Kimnara, and Mahoraga.

According to Buddhist scripture, Deva are gods but not supreme beings; they merely enjoy greater and longer-lasting karmic rewards than mortal men. Buddhists hold that everything is transient, and therefore even the Deva must die. There are five signs of a Deva’s imminent death: their clothes will be soiled, the flowers on their head wither, their bodies will stink, sweat will come out of their armpits, and they no longer delight in their place. These are the five great sorrows of heaven, and they are a Deva’s greatest sorrows. Indra is the leader of the Deva.

Naga are dragon gods. The dragons in Buddhist scriptures are not so different from those in the tales of our own country, except that they have no feet, and pythons are occasionally called dragons. In actual fact, the Chinese understanding of dragons and dragon kings is largely derived from these scriptures. Buddhist scriptures make mention of the Fifth Dragon King, the Seventh Dragon King, the Eighth Dragon King and so on.

The ancient Indians revered dragons. They felt that the dragon was the strongest of all creatures living in the water, and that the elephant was the most powerful of all creatures living on land. This is why greatly-respected personages are called “dragon-elephants”*. When someone says that “a dragon-elephant approaches from the west”, this refers to an eminent monk that has come from the west. In ancient India, people believed that rain was water that dragons took from the sea and scattered on earth. The Chinese also accepted this belief. The almanacs indicate how the number of dragons carrying water impacted rainfall for the year. One of the dragon kings was called Sagara, and his eight-year-old daughter spoke of the scriptures to the Shakyamuni Buddha, became a boy, and attained enlightenment.

The Yaksha are a type of demon, and some have been termed the “Eight Yaksha Generals” or “Sixteen Great Yaksha Generals”. The original Yaksha were gods that ate demons, were nimble and agile, as well as brave and secretive. The Vimalakirti Sutra divides the Yaksha into three categories: those that live on earth, those that float in space, and those that live in the fork between night and day. These days, when we speak of Yaksha, we typically refer to demons. But in the Buddhist scriptures there were many good Yaksha. Indeed, the task of the Eight Yaksha generals was to protect all the beings of the world.

The Gandharva are spirits that neither eat nor drink, but subsist on fragrances. They are the chief beings that wait upon Indra, and their bodies give off a fragrance. In Sanskrit, gandharva means “inscrutable change”. For that reason, magicians are also known as gandharva, and mirages are called gandharva cities. Their fragrance and music are faint, indistinct, and hard to capture.

Asura are a unique race of spirits because the males are terribly ugly, while the females are exceedingly beautiful. The King of the Asura often goes to war with Indra and the Deva, for the Asura have beautiful women but not good food, and Indra has good food but not beautiful women. There is a mutual jealousy and a desire to possess what the other side has. Every battle between the Asura and Indra sets the earth into tumult. For this reason, the aftermath of terrible, corpse-strewn battles are known as “asura grounds”. The King of the Asura is typically defeated in these battles. Once, after being roundly beaten, he had nowhere to hide and slipped into the hollows in a lotus root.

The King of the Asura is irascible, stubborn and quick to jealousy. When the Shakyamuni Buddha speaks of the four domains of mindfulness, the Asura king is quick to speak of the five domains of mindfulness. When the Buddha speaks of the 37 qualities conducive to enlightenment, the Asura king is quick to say that there are 38 qualities. There are many examples of this in the Buddhist scriptures. The King of the Asura has great power and ability, but he is often deliberately contrary and his mindset is “the more chaos, the better”. He is also very suspicious. In the Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom, it is written that the King of the Asura “was frequently suspicious of Buddha... when Buddha spoke of Five Clusters, he said there were six; when Buddha spoke of the Four Noble Truths, he said there were five.” The Five Clusters and Four Noble Truths are all basic concepts in Buddhism. But the Asura king feared that Buddha deliberately left out one of each because he sided with Indra.

The Garuda are large birds with many solemn colours on their wings. They have a large growth on their heads, which contains a lucky jewel. These birds have sorrowful cries and eat dragons. The old myths say that the general Yue Fei was the reincarnation of a “mythical, golden-winged bird”. The Garuda is that bird. The Garuda need to eat one dragon king and 500 smaller dragons each day. When they are about to die, they spit poison and are unable to eat. They fly up and down seven times before flying to the Jingganglun Mountains to die. During their lifetimes, Garuda accumulate a great deal of poison in their bodies from all the dragons they eat. When they die, this is released and they burn to death. All that is left of a dead Garuda is its heart, which has the clarity of green glass.

In Sanskrit, Kimnara means “the one who looks like man, but is not man”. Kimnara look like men but have a single horn on their heads, which is why they have been given this name. They enjoy music and dancing, and bring happiness to Indra.

Mahoraga are huge python deities. They have a man’s body and a snake’s head.

Demigods and Semi-Devils is set during the Northern Song Dynasty. It is a story of the Dali Kingdom in Yunnan.

The Dali Kingdom was a Buddhist kingdom, and its kings were Buddhist. They often set aside their station to take up monkhood - a very strange and unique phenomenon in our country’s history. Of the Dali kings, Shengde, Xiaode, Baoding, Xuanren, Zhenlian, Shenzong and others abdicated to become monks. The South King in The Legend of the Condor Heroes was a Dali king. Demigods and Semi-Devils takes place before the events in that book. This book takes place between the Yuanyou and Shaosheng eras, around 1094 AD.

The eight beings classified as demigods and semi-devils have their own characteristics and magical abilities. Although they are beings from outside our world, they experience the joys and pains of the mortal world. This novel does not contain such mythological beings, but merely uses these beings from Buddhist scriptures to represent certain characters. This is similar to how Sun Erniang in The Water Margin is known as the Female Yaksha, or Ou Peng as Golden Wings Brushing the Clouds.

Halflings can be used with all classes and introduce the new Luck mechanic which allows them to dodge incoming attack while they’re in good spirits.

Name Keeper (Shaman Archetype)

Adventuring is not without its risks, and often, people don’t come back from an expedition. For most, they mourn and move on, or else invest in the materials needed for a resurrection. Some, however, seek to honor the dead in other ways, particularly in adventuring guilds.

Drawing upon the spirits of the fallen, Name Keepers seek to finish the last mission of dead or missing adventurers, both to help put them to rest and to benefit the archaeological significance of the original quest. However, their desire is not only to honor the fallen by finishing their business, but also to prevent the living from being added to their list.

Associated with the Pathfinder Society and its memorial to the fallen: The Wall of Names, these shamans can be found anywhere that there are fallen heroes and adventurers that never returned, and while the archetype heavily uses Pathfinder Society symbology, that’s no reason you can’t use it in your setting as you see fit.

Rather than a spirit animal, these shaman instead use a wayfinder, those magical ioun-attuned compasses associated with the Pathfinder Society, as the conduit for their primary spirit and that of the deceased adventurers they seek to honor. Said wayfinder is exclusively one formerly owned by a deceased adventurer, and seems broken, though is supernaturally retains its function for the shaman.

Rather than gain spells associated with their chosen spirit, they instead learn magic associated with stone barriers, gaining supernatural insight, speaking with the lifeless, bringing the dead back to life, and even teleporting to a safe haven when needed.

Rather than bond with traditional wandering spirits, these shamans call upon the echoes and spirits of deceased adventurers to grant them a suite of powers, dividing said suites along the three traditional symbols of the Pathfinder Society.

The spirits of the scrolls are those of scholars and loremasters, and during their bond they provide enhanced knowledge of esoteric skills associated with oracular mysteries for the duration of the bond.

The spirits of spells represent those mages among adventurers who sought greater magical understanding, and grant the same to these shamans, effectively granting them the spells of other shaman spirits to them, eventually more than one, with additional spell potency to fuel them.

Finally, the sword spirits represent those warriors who fought valiantly alongside the other two, protecting them from harm. They grant martial skill and enhanced speed.

Additionally, these shamans use their wandering hex potential to learn general hexes or those of their primary spirit.

Looking for a shaman with useful spells for an expedition and the ability to channel their versatility into things that don’t just involve spells and supernatural abilities all day? This archetype is certainly a good pick, particularly with how thematic and interesting it is. Build with your primary spirit in mind, but also remember how they can become skill monkeys, enhanced caster, or quasi-martial each day.

The archetype doesn’t go into it, but the exact identity of the fallen adventurers this archetype calls upon goes miles towards explaining what powers they grant. A pyromancer granting the flame spirit spells, an investigator granting a particular knowledge skill, a spiked chain-wielding fighter granting appropriate feats, et cetera.

Additionally it’s worth noting how important to these mystics it is that they memorize the story of the current adventurer(s) they are seeking to complete the legacy of, and many go to great lengths to preserve it in some form or another.

Compelled into the wilds by the whispers of the forest, no body was ever recovered of Harna Irondriver, and her spirit joined the many in that haunted woods. However, when a name keeper seeking to put her to rest appears, the other lost souls begin to awaken, sensing something.

Among the burgeoning caligni communities, many actively seek to recover the history of their people from before the owb turned their people into the dark folk. Chief among them are those that seek to awaken and call upon legendary figures from their people’s past, both in the form of mediums and those that blend such arts with shamanism.

So much history is lost every time a civilization collapses, and the same is true of those destroyed by the eternal conflict between garuda and nagas. Indeed, it is only thanks to the oral traditions of the name keepers that those civilizations caught between the physical and political jousting of the two races survive in literal spirit.

Tatung March, 3 Culture of Singkawang City

This is a parade of the Dayak-Chinese magicians' attraction to celebrate Cap Go Meh, a celebration held after the Chinese New Year. The attraction, named Tatung Parade, follows Chinese traditions mixed with Dayak culture that can only be seen in Singkawang, West Kalimantan. The Cap Go Meh celebration is celebrated almost all over the world. However, Cap Go Meh in Singkawang has a slightly different celebration from celebrations in other regions. Para warga Tionghoa ini bersembahyang bukan tanpa maksud, karena hari itu disebut sebagai harimau putih, seraya berharap tidak terjadi hal-hal yang diinginkan. Saat waktu menjelang sore, banyak suhu atau pendeta yang keluar dan bersembahyang di vihara dengan tujuan meminta izin kepada para dewa, agar ritual tatung berjalan secara lancar dan terhindar dari hal-hal buruk saat festival berlangsung. Upacara pemanggilan tatung dipimpin oleh seorang pendeta. Pemanggilan tatung ini dilakukan dengan mendatangkan roh orang yang sudah meninggal untuk merasuki tatung. “Roh-roh yang dipanggil diyakini sebagai roh-roh baik, yang mampu menangkal roh jahat yang hendak mengganggu keharmonisan hidup masyarakat. Roh baik terdiri dari roh pahlawan dalam legenda Tiongkok, seperti panglima perang, hakim, sastrawan, pangeran, pelacur yang sudah bertobat dan orang suci lainnya,” cerita Husada, Wakil Ketua Vihara Tri Dharma Bumi Raya Singkawang.

Tatung March Menurut Husada, roh-roh yang dipanggil ini dapat merasuki siapa saja, tergantung apakah para pemeran tatung memenuhi syarat dalam tahapan yang ditentukan pendeta. Para tatung diwajibkan berpuasa selama tiga hari sebelum hari perayaan, dengan maksud mereka berada dalam keadaan suci sebelum perayaan. Tatung diyakini memiliki kekuatan supranatural, mampu melakukan pengobatan dan pengusiran unsur-unsur jahat (tolak bala). Setelah sebelumnya diadakan pawai lampion, arak-arakan barongsai, dan pawai naga maka dua hari berikutnya dilakukan perayaan Cap Go Meh di Singkawang. Pada perayaan Cap Go Meh ini terdapat juga dominasi arak-arakan tatung dari vihara. Arak-arakan tatung dalam perayaan Cap Go Meh di Singkawang dilaksanakan setelah mendapat berkat dan restu dari Kelenteng atau vihara. Upacara arak-arakan tatung dimulai dari altar vihara. Para suhu (pendeta) memberikan persembahan kepada Dewa To Pe Kong. Setelah minta diberkahi keselamatan, mereka kemudian memanggil roh, tubuh para tatung ini dirasuki roh agar menjadi kebal untuk kemudian diarak keliling kota, dengan dandanan pakaian mewakili kelompok masyarakat Tionghoa atau Dayak. Diiringi genderang, peserta pawai mengenakan kostum gemerlap pakaian kebesaran Suku Dayak dan negeri Tiongkok di masa silam. Atraksi tatung dipenuhi dengan hal mistik dan menegangkan. Misalnya, ada tatung yang berdiri tegak diatas tandu menginjakan kaki di sebilah mata pedang atau pisau. Ada pula yang menancapkan kawat-kawat baja runcing ke pipi kanan hingga menembus pipi kiri. Para tatung ini melakukan atraksi mempertunjukkan kekebalan mereka, sesekali mereka harus minum arak, atau bahkan menghisap darah ayam yang secara khusus disiapkan sebagai ritual. Pecahan kaca diinjak, atau bahkan kaki para tatung menginjak bagian tajam dari sebilah pedang. Para tatung diarak dengan jalan kaki, namun sebagian lain berdiri diatas tahta yang dipanggul oleh 4 orang, layaknya pembesar dari negeri Tionghoa. Menariknya, para Tatung itu sedikit pun tidak tergores atau terluka. Sambil memamerkan kekebalan tubuh dengan benda-benda tajam, tatung diarak berkeliling kota Singkawang. Rute yang di tempuh meliputi, Lapangan Kridasana menuju Jalan Pelita, kemudian mengarah ke Jalan Yohana Godan dan Jalan GM Situt. Perjalanan kemudian berlanjut ke Jembatan Pasar Ikan, mengarah ke Jalan Saad dan mengarah ke Jalan Setia Budi dan ke jalan Toko Obat 1001 dan ke Jalan Budi Utomo serta melewati Jembatan Rusen. Dari Jembatan Rusen, perjalanan mengarah ke Vihara Tri Dharma Bumi Raya dan ke Jalan Sejahtera. Setelah itu, pawai diarahkan menuju Jalan Kepol Mahmud dan berakhir di Muka Altar Lelang. Terakhir, mereka berkumpul untuk melakukan sembahyang bersama kepada Thian (Tuhan) di altar pusat perayaan Cap Go Meh di Singkawang.

Asimilasi Budaya

Keberadaan tatung dalam jumlah besar merupakan fenomena budaya khas Kota Singkawang saat perayaan Cap Go Meh Singkawang. Sebagai pesta kebudayaan, pawai tatung memiliki sisi ritual religi yang cukup kental dan mencerminkan pembauran kepercayaan Taoisme kuno dengan animisme lokal yang hanya terdapat di Kota Singkawang.

Tatung March Daerah Singkawang sendiri memiliki penduduk asli yakni Suku Dayak, Melayu yang berbaur dengan warga Tionghoa yang sudah lama tinggal di sana. Kesemuannya tidak beragama atau dikenal dengan animisme. Wilayah Singkawang awalnya merupakan bagian dari wilayah Sambas yang melingkupi Kota Singkawang, Kabupaten Sambas, dan Kabupaten Bengkayang. Sambas bermakna sam (tiga) bas (etnis), yang berarti penduduknya terdiri dari etnis Melayu Sambas, yang beragama Islam, peleburan dari berbagai suku atau etnis yaitu Melayu, campuran Tionghoa-Dayak Islam, Bugis, Jawa yang beragama Islam mengidentifikasi diri sebagai etnis Melayu. Kedua etnis Tinghoa, yang beragama Samkaw (Tao, Buddha dan konfusius), Katolik, Protestan merupakan turunan Tionghoa perantauan, turunan campuran Tionghoa Dayak yang mengidentifikasi diri dalam etnis Tionghoa Indonesia. Ketiga, etnis Dayak, beragama Katolik, Protestan, Islam dan sebagian kecil animisme, mengidentifikasi diri dengan suku Dayak (penduduk asli Kalimantan). Perayaan festival Cap Go Meh di Singkawang merupakan perayaan yang berasal dari Tiongkok yang sejak lebih dari 250 tahun dibawa dan dirayakan di Sambas oleh orang Tionghoa Singkawang. Kemudian perayaan ini beradaptasi dan berasimilasi dengan budaya, tradisi, dan ritual tradisional animisme setempat. Festival Cap Go Meh merupakan pesta rakyat terbesar di dunia dengan fenomena kearifan lokal yang menjadi daya tarik tersendiri bagi pariwisata di tanah air. Ha-Naga

Making their first appearance (I think) in the Third Edition Epic Level Handbook, ha-nagas are among the mightiest of their kind. Even the Tome of Horrors 4’s scaled down version is a commendable CR 15 with an attitude to match. Similar in disposition to spirit nagas and probably in interests as well, ha-nagas roam from place to place (or plane to plane), spreading wickedness and misery in their wake. At home both in faraway ruins and right in the heart of power, whispering deceit and treachery into the ears of a ruler, these powerful nagas can serve many roles depending on their opinion of the party and the plans they’ve set into motion. Ha-nagas don’t have to adversaries any more than any other naga despite their willingness to eat just about anything (or anyone) and a decidedly evil, self-interested disposition. Of course, just like dragons, some ha-nagas only see the party as lunch… until they offer something interesting for their lives.

When you start looking at bringing a ha-naga into the picture, approach the problem like you would a dragon or mighty sorcerer. Why is the ha-naga interested? They’re generally not the innocent bystander type, after all. Tweak their spell choices, add a few interesting minions and magic items that complement their goals and methods. Maybe even pull in a few spells from the oracle or psychic lists, or steal a touch of power from a mystery or bloodline. If you’re looking for some extra oomph, a few ranks of the archmage path or certain mythic templates could definitely bring that sort of feeling back. One final note before I get to the adventure seeds – ha-nagas don’t have to be adversaries. Their interests might align with a party’s or they may have something the party needs and be willing to bargain.

Even as the Pale Fury tribe of orcs sweeps down from the Glittering Peaks, rumors speak of the mysterious great serpent that plants dreams of conquest in the head of their chieftain Burul. A mighty ha-naga, Isal has gathered a small band of ash-marked “spirit warriors”, creating a potent force loyal only to her within the Pale Fury in addition to the masked witches (scarred witch doctor archetype) who traditionally answer to the high shaman of the tribe. Though she claims to simply be pursuing the baubles she finds interesting, Isal’s true goal is the lost amrita. Long ago, Isal tasted the nectar of the gods and she lusts after completing the fell metamorphosis that began with a petty spirit naga.

Though he plays at statecraft and rules in ego, the ha-naga Umimva leaves much of the mechanics of administering the city-state of Suranpur to the toiling clerks and squabbling councilors of the bureaucracy, occasionally stirring to squash some insolent treachery or over-zealous reformer. Umimva’s real passion is occult baubles and strange secrets, though, and in Suranpur’s shadows, a market in the eldritch and the odd flourishes. The ha-naga himself is an active participant through a few loyal servants bound by oaths and magic. Open to flattery and bribery, Umimva could make a valuable patron to those who don’t mind his sinister nature and over the years, he has amassed a formidable collection of occult secrets he brokers for other things of interest.

Dwelling far from the Thessalarian sea, the ha-naga Sraylas still managed to establish a mystic correspondence with the kraken Zephias. The pair plot intrigues over arcane letters, maneuvering pawns against mutual rivals in a game of power and an alliance of convenience in the shadowy struggles of the unseen powers that vie for influence in Iroa. Anyone moving against Zephias’s plots may soon find Sraylas’s nagaji thralls stalking them even as they work against the kraken’s intrigues. Even so, Sraylas might betray his compatriot if offered a better deal, something that would almost inevitably involve a geas to bring back the kraken’s corpse, or at least a few choice delicacies, for Sraylas to feast on. The ha-naga considers himself something of an epicure, after all.

Serpents are the subject of myth and legend on Eomera, influencing art and storytelling up and down the continent. The mighty, slumbering linnorms are the most common, with epics feting the deeds of heroes who battled the dragons among the most popular tales in taverns and poetry circles. Ha-nagas, though, go rarely spoken of, their art in covered alcoves or tucked into the corners of a sage’s library out of fear, for the ha-nagas do not sleep, and they take far more notice of mortals than linnorms ever bother to. Vain, proud, and mighty, the great nagas will reward anyone who sufficiently praises them well but their discerning and mercurial tastes make them a difficult audience, with more than one would-be master bard reduced to a meal (or worse) after daring to seek out one of the ha-nagas’ lairs.

That third seed has the same sort of vibe as a dinner party in one of the Hell’s Rebels books. It’s… memorable.
