i said i would talk about pi vs tau, and what better day than pi day lmao (shout out to vi hart for this idea, and also for teaching me about tau in the first place. check out their youtube its so fun)

first of all. im assuming yall are familiar with pi. the constant defined by the ratio between the circumference and diameter of a circle, 3.14159.... blah blah blah. you know it. so whats tau? well, its 2*pi, 6.283185...... but more importantly, its the ratio between the circumference and the RADIUS of a circle. it serves functionally the same purpose as pi, except its way more intuitive and makes more sense in almost every context

and the main reason its so much better is, beyond elementary school, the diameter is almost never used. every formula has the radius in it, INCLUDING the one for finding the circumference! i swear, the only time i saw C=pi*d is when i first learned basic circle geometry. ever since then its been C=2*pi*r. radius is used to find the area of a circle and the volume of a sphere. the radius of The Unit Circle is 1. the equation of a circle is x^2 + y^2 = r^2. the radius is even in the DEFINITION of a circle! "all points are equal distance from the center" thats the radius! this is all very basic circle geometry and it all uses the radius. so WHY are we still using the constant thats defined by the diameter???

and it gets even worse when you learn about RADIANS. quick rundown on what radians are: you have a circle. start at one point on the circumference, travel along the circumference for a distance of 1 radius. the angle formed by that pizza slice is 1 radian (its a little under 60 degrees). since we know that the ratio between circumference and radius is tau (or 2pi), there are tau radians in a circle. i.e you can travel that distance of 1 radius 6 times (plus a little extra, bc tau is 6.28....) before you get back to the start.

look me in the eyes and tell me it makes ANY sense that the number of radians in a circle is 2pi. if youre going to use the relationship between the circumference and the radius to define angles, why wouldnt you use the constant that relates the circumference and the RADIUS??? if you use pi, then the whole circle is 2pi radians. why is the whole 2?? its not the unit semicircle! using pi means pi/2 radians isnt halfway around the circle, its a quarter of the way around. but tau/2 radians IS halfway around, because 1 tau is the whole circle. using tau is way more intuitive.

now, using pi for radians COULD make sense, if radians used the diameter instead of the radius (although they would probably have a different name haha). then they would be twice as big and there would be half as many in a circle, making it pi instead of 2pi. but we would never do that, because no one ever uses the diameter for anything. everything i listed above that uses the radius becomes either clunky or downright useless if you use the diameter instead. i mean, can you imagine if the unit circle had a DIAMETER of 1??? it loses all of the properties that make it worth using! its just so inconsistent. if youre going to use the radius for everything, then use it for EVERYTHING. including the constant.
