The Nightworld Series by LJ SmithThis series has been one of my favorites since middle school, which is exactly how long I’ve been waiting for the last one to come out. There are nine books, you will likely find them in 3-in-1 books so each physical copy has three of them in it. It has pretty much no fandom and I’d love it if someone could please come talk to me about Ash Redfern.Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters – they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. And falling in love breaks all the laws of the Night World.

Everything, Everything by Nicola YoonAnother one that got a movie so it’s a little more popular now but I still don’t see much of a fandom here on Tumblr. I rarely like stand alone books but this is a definite exception. The book is way better than the movie by the way, as it always is. Btw I’m totally in love with Olly.My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

30 Day Monster Challenge 2 - Day #16: Favorite Evil Weapon/Object

1. Stormbringer (Elric of Melnibone)

The Black Blade. Daughter of Arioch. The Stealer of Souls. One of the single most legendary swords in all of fantasy, present in every universe in at least one form or another. A demon of chaos bound by the Lords of Law into the shape of a weapon. Whoever wields it can drain the souls from whoever they stab and sustain themselves with it, but is driven by a terrible hunger. The Black Blade has a will of its own, and it howls for blood as it is swung. In short, the definitive evil weapon.

What makes Stormbringer stand out from its later imitators, and even previous legendary evil weapons, is how it affects its primary wield, Elric of Melnibone. As an albino, Elric is sickly, and usually uses medicine and dark magic to stay alive. But abroad in the Young Kingdoms, Elric has to rely on Stormbringer to survive. Even as Elric connects with people outside his home kingdom, they are bound to die whenever he needs to stay alive, no matter how much Elric tries to fight it. Stormbringer is essentially a manifestation of Elric’s burden as the Champion of Balance, but also his greater isolation that distances him from being able to make connections. Elric makes it clear that Stormbringer isn’t some kind of ultimate weapon, it’s a crutch, a drug that ultimately consumes its user. And in the end, that’s what happens to Elric; when the entire universe is consumed by chaos, Stormbringer finally turns on Elric before disappearing into the apocalypse.

2. Soul Edge/Soul Calibur (Soulcalibur)

So this is honestly cheating, but I just can’t pick between the two swords. Soul Edge is the clear Stormbringer descendent and looks rad as hell to boot. Even more that Stormbringer, Soul Edge looks like a living, breathing monster. It can even shapeshift into weapons that aren’t sword, and it had an entire life cycle in Soulcalibur 2. But Soul Edge never really stopped being the ‘bad’ sword. It’s counterpart, Soul Calibur, on the other hand, started off as the ‘good’ sword. But as the series went on, Soul Calibur began to change. In Soulcalibur 4 it was hinted that Soul Calibur might have a mind of its own as well, and it might not have the purest intentions. By Soulcalibur 5, the plot hook came to fruition; Soul Calibur is just as dangerous as Soul Edge and wants to trap the world in a perfect unchanging state. The swords have become the embodiments of Law and Chaos; the Michael Moorcock reference comes full circle. All we need now is a game where Soul Calibur is out of control and the only thing that can stop it is Soul Edge.

3. The Terror Mask (Splatterhouse)

The Terror Mask has sass, the Terror Mask has a personality. Half these evil artifacts are just kind of generically malevolent; they won’t yell at you in Jim Cummings’ voice and call you a pussy when you notice one of your arms is missing. There’s a surprising amount of lore invested in the Terror Mask. An entity from the space between spaces, it fled the cosmic horror gods until they bound it in a bone mask. Now it’s out to settle the score, and whoever is wearing it just happens to be along for the ride. Granted, the wearer of the mask turns into a hulking slasher ogre that is almost impossible to kill. The Splatterhouse games are a gateway into the video game id, replete with monsters, ultra-violence, and a hero so buff he puts the ‘masculine’ in ‘toxic masculinity’. The Terror Mask, like in the game, is just a way to get to that special kind of hell.

4. The Necronomicon Ex Mortis (Evil Dead)

The Necronomicon Ex Mortis is probably the most famous evil book in the world, probably more so than Lovecraft’s original Necronomicon. (Frankly, I could do an entire list on favorite evil books, but we’ll get there when we get there.) The Ex Mortis really doesn’t have a lot to do with Lovecraft besides the name, other than that they are both old, sanity-rending, and bodies of literature. But, being honest, the Ex Mortis is just the more fun of the two. The Ex Mortis is the party-boy of evil books to the original Necronomicon’s Ivy League scholar. It’s such an embodiment of Sam Raimi horror; gory, campy, with a bit of slapstick thrown in, and its mere presence causes weirdness to happen. The Necronomicon Ex Mortis contains knowledge of things man was not meant to know, and it knows it. It’s mischievous, and it’d almost be lovable if it wasn’t also full of immensely powerful black magic.

5. The One Ring (Lord of the Rings)

I’ve always been interested by the concept that the One Ring can think for itself. The One Ring is, ultimately, an incredibly loyal evil artifact, and is only interested in new yielders insofar as they can deliver it back to Sauron. The Ring really is an apt counterpart for the hobbits; a little thing, defenseless, almost useless at first glance, but capable of changing the world. The Ring also has a pedigree, of course. It shares more than few traits with the Ring of Nibelung from the Wagnerian cycle of operas of the same name. The Nibelung Ring, like the One Ring, can grant the wearer power over the world, but only if they renounce love. In time, the covetousness of men and gods for the ring destroys the world and brings about Ragnarok. The One Ring is a reflection of the Ring of Nibelung, but also vastly different in many respects. It brings about the end of the gods and immortals, but only because they were staying to try and destroy it. The end of the Ring and of Sauron grants the world the ability to move into the next age, the age of mankind, which reflects not only Tolkien’s notions about divinity and its place in human existence, but I think also his faith that people can rise to their best in the changing times.

6. Rubilax (Wakfu)

Rubilax is the only evil weapon here to have a character arc. Granted, that’s because he’s actually a demon bound to a sword, but whatever. Rubilax starts out as your typical evil sword, trying to possess the (idiot) paladin bound to guard him. Not to make it a contest, but he gets pretty far, to the point that said paladin has to release Rubilax and fight him in a bare-knuckle fist fight into submission. After that, things get kind of complicated. People die, souls are displaced, there’s a colosseum death match, and Rubilax has to make some calls about his moral character, so to speak. In the end, Rubilax decides to side with the good guys, and even gets along with the paladin’s kids. So he’s less of an evil weapon and more of just a demonic one, but he’s definitely the most nuanced character here.

7. The Event Horizon (Event Horizon)

The Even Horizon is pushing the definition of ‘evil object’. It’s really more of an evil place, which might also be worth a look sometime, but for now a ship counts as an object. There’s plenty of sci-fi stories that try to do the cursed spaceship deal, but I feel like Event Horizon is the only one that really captures the gothic horror aspect. I think we tend to forget that architecture, aside from its practical usage, is also meant to convey ideas and thoughts as much as any other form of artistry, and was one of the more important forms of public communication before the spread of reading. The architecture of the Event Horizon is the words to a spell, the three-dimensional incantation that opens the gates of Hell. It was a morbid, dark temple to man’s ignorance even before it went into other dimensions. Once it returns, it hungers for more; a cursed ship bound to always return to its home port on the other side. Something about the Event Horizon reminds me of the Rime of the Ancient Mariner; the way the ship is warped and changed by sailing through strange waters, and how the survivors are bound to relive the curse over and over again. That’s why the Event Horizon is my favorite ghost ship in science fiction.

8. The Marker (Dead Space)

The Marker draws directly from Event Horizon, and they both share the concept of wordlessly communicating a kind of madness to the people who view them. The Marker, though, takes it to a new extreme, in that it has a literal insanity aura that causes hallucinations, paranoia, and aggressiveness. An interesting way that the Marker is more ‘alive’ than other evil objects is that it is self-propagating; part of the madness it transmits is the formula necessary for its replications. But what I find most fascinating is how the Marker can transmit information that changes DNA, altering people on the cellular level to turn them into Necromorphs. That kind of power, to change biology through information, is nothing short of magic in most other settings.

9. The Berserker Armor (Berserk)

You can’t fight demons if you ain’t cute. The Berserker Armor was forged by dwarves for the explicit purpose of fighting demons and monsters. It draws on the rage and negative energy inside a person to give them incredible strength and agility, but at the price of slowly draining their senses. The Skull Knight originally made it for himself, but even he was scared off by the armor’s power. Now Guts has it, and he has a lot of rage to give. I think the most fascinating thing about the armor is how it changes and molds itself to how Guts’ uses it. It didn’t start off with a giant wolf helmet; that’s just Guts’ personal totem representing his inner darkness. But when the armor drew on that, it changed shape, and when Guts holds himself back, it stays restrained. Still, the armor takes a lower spot because it itself isn’t evil, it just draws on a person’s internal negativity; it’s all up to the wearer on how much they use it.

10. The Gonne (Discworld)

Discworld is full of anachronistic magical devices, and they’re all usually cause for some kind of concern. The Gonne was at the center of a fairly elaborate murder plot involving the Assassin’s Guild and the Night Watch, but was finally put a stop to. Like any good evil weapon, it whispers promises of power to whoever happens to be holding it at the time, and is also a little trigger-happy. But the Gonne and its metaphor for firearms gets kind of overshadowed by everything happening around it, and it even gets acknowledged as a powerful and worthy weapon in its own way by the end.

And on top of that, they experimented with genetic modifications, giving him modifications of a raccoon. He eventually broke out, somehow getting a guard’s gun and killing everyone who dared stand in his way. He now lives with Tyler and has an odd infatuation with guns and a serious sadism problem.

After her parent’s… Unfortunate death, she ran away and followed her dream of being in the police force. She works at the same station SR700 is at, and they’re very good friends. Although later on in her life she got kidnapped by Leo, who did numerous things to her, including keeping her as a pet and digging her eye out - so now she wears a bandanna to cover the scar of the hole, along with numerous other scars that can’t be covered. The feathers on one side of her face are missing and scarred over.

He was stolen as a young kit to be used as a weapon for a powerful gang, who basically broke down his sanity until there was none left. Far back in his lineage (he’s related to Ross) a powerful witch cursed his whole bloodline with a third eye in the middle of their forehead. They forced him into a pet mentality, and gave him two extremely strong metal prosthetic arms as a replacement for those he lost during a hit. He killed his ‘master’ (he forced Rogue to call him that) and eventually escaped, but he never truly recovered because he never remembered his actual name. So he calls himself Rogue. He started to work at the same Hot Topic Ross works at.

He has snake-like attributes (red-bellied black snake ones, to be specific) and venom that acts as an aphrodisiac. He was also kidnapped by Leo and used as an object, but he’s forcefully forgotten most of that experience. He works at a club as a dancer.

He works at a little bookstore that he loves to death. Currently struggling with the fact that he has to eat humans to survive, and that need is moot with Thorn and Alex since they’re part human.

She works with Jakkal as a bouncer, and tries to juggle caring for Alex and her unfortunate alcohol addiction. Her blood is electric blue like her eyes.

His eyes and blood are bright red, since all cyberdemons have a random blood color at birth.

Her eyes burn a bright icy blue and she usually keeps to herself, due to her destructive and manic tendencies. She loves to read and is extremely smart.

Nikolas, who sometimes goes by Nik, writes under a false name for a newspaper column. Nobody has ever seen him since he spends most of his time in his house. He has reddish-ginger hair and same color feathers.

His human form is a black-haired young man, although his eyes are bright green as well as the inside of his mouth.

A more powerful god, they broke him easily with a little help from a certain demon we all know has hypnosis abilities. He currently is revered as ‘The Destroyer’ because he decimates everything in his path, making him equal in abilities to Rogue. His usual form is odd, with swirling brighter red designs on his skin. His hair is blonde, and the horns on his head are gray. He acts like a cat most of the time, and he has the fangs and claws to match.

His bioluminescent markings are bright purple, and his eyes are so pale they’re almost white.

Zephyr narrowly escaped death on Salvalara -- he stole a book from the archives and tried to kill one of the Ancient Ones. He narrowly escaped death by manipulating a guard to send him to Earth. He suffers from vampirism, giving him an undeniable craving for blood. Since he’s on Earth, he can easily satisfy his craving by attacking humans. He usually kills them quick, but if he’s feeling particularly zesty he might ask for a quick fuck first. He has hyena fur on his neck and hyena ears, and his markings glow dark gray. His hair is almost always greasy, and its gray, as is the hyena fur. His eyes are gray as well, although lighter.

He’s pretty pretentious and stuck-up, but deep down he’s extremely loyal and a good friend.

so the ocs i was shitposting abt in that last post are my dumbass 12 year old ocs who were inspired by seraph of the end and the mortal instruments so it was uh,,,,,,,, a whole ass trainwreck but i love them and every time i tried to make them interesting i ended up changing everything about them so like last year i decided i would keep as much the same as i wanted about them and just fully embrace the mary sue dumbness of it and go absolutely wild

so! the state of the world at this point is that most of humanity is dead and the world is overun with demons and seraphim and some Whole Ass Biblical Angels and also vampires i guess bc Fuck You Vampires Are Cool. most living humans travel around in packs, general apocalypse bullshit yknow anyways all that’s boring onto the characters

rowan is my twelve year old self’s self insert and their main personality trait is that they have an eyepatch and own a scythe and i love them to death. they’re self sufficient and perpetually annoyed and super gay and pretend to have no feelings but are actually super high strung and constantly worried about their friends. also they have an edgy cloak and bright red hair and did i mention the eyepatch and the scythe they’re the world’s edgiest bitch and i love them

mal was pretty much nothing except rowan’s comphet boyfriend when i was younger so naturally i gave him the world’s most undeserved makeover and now he’s just a whole entire rowdy boy. imagine if the kid at your middle school who was obsessed with yugioh, instead of switching to magic the gathering when they got to high school, switched to kinning god and fistfighting demons. HIS dumbass origin story is that he was so scared of death that he made a deal with a demon named malachi (not its real name, the demons and seraphim are so terribly inhuman that human ears can’t hear their names, so they pick their own names somewhere within the range of “jeff” to “ylllmar the destroyer��) and then decided “hey as long as i have your power i basically AM you”, and now refuses to be called by his human name (james) because he’s so Dedicated To The Kin. (he’s such an asshole that he once told someone not to deadname him when they used his proper name. that someone being rowan. who is actually trans. they were not amused)

jem is probably my favorite (not 2 pick favorites but it’s her). she has all the confidence of mal, who’s so strong that he’s All But Immortal, except she’s 15 and 5 feet tall and couldn’t fight someone if her life depended on it. rowan considers her their mortal enemy, but they’re really something closer to girlfriends (although really it’s not that far of a leap from one to the other). she’s nosy and fearless and when she was like 13 she pretended to be a vampire to survive, joined a vampire girl gang, became the leader of said girl gang, then revealed that she was a human, but they all loved her so much that they just kinda said “fuck it” and now she has a horde of vampires to protect her wherever she goes. she’s The Ultimate Femme. wants immortality but doesn’t want it now because she doesn’t want to live in the body of a 16 year old for the rest of her life, so she’s waiting until her twenties to let one of the vampires turn her. in the meantime, she wears red contact lenses (vampires don’t have red eyes. it’s just a Her Thing) and every one of her outfits has enough frills and ruffles to smother her in lace.

my favorite beside jem is angel, aka the world’s dumbest bitch. his deal is that he’s a seraphim who was beaten up by his brothers for being a little bitch so he decided he’d go find a human to hang out with instead. so he put on the world’s most unconvincing human disguise (when i say seraphim i AM imagining glowing wheels of fire and eyes but they can shapeshift in this story bc uh. my world my rules) and went to find a human. and human. and he found little 12 year old rowan, said “this’ll do”, handed them a scythe, and they’ve been a dream team ever since. he’s fascinated with humans in the way that people are fascinated with their pets, which is kinda weird bc rowan is 100% the babysitter in this situation. he likes killing things, learning about human culture, rowan, and...that’s pretty much it. he and jem get along well because he’s like an overenthusiastic person and she’s the only one with the boundless energy to endulge him.

again, no picture i’ve made myself, but i DID find the picture i ripped off google images a million years ago and used as his face (i promise you he looks nothing like that now...also i didn’t remember it looking like it had been deep fried jesus)

What to you believe happens to us after death? >> I’ve settled on “the lights go out and that’s that for my existence” as the most logical result. I’m actually disturbed by the concept of an afterlife -- one life is more than enough for me, I can’t imagine having to continue in some other realm. It baffles me that this could be a comforting thing to others when... don’t you just want to sleep? Wouldn’t you be tired? Consciousness takes so much energy. I mean, whatever. At the end of life I just want to curl up in the Great Void and take the eternal sleep. Have you ever cheated on someone? >> Yes. What are your plans for this weekend? >> The same as always -- grocery shopping, park meetup, laundry. Does the thought of growing old frighten you? >> Not usually. The only specific things that would frighten me are infirmity and terminal illness, but those aren’t guaranteed to happen with old age, they just become more and more likely the older you get (and if you get old enough, some level of infirmity is pretty impossible to avoid). Oh, and the other thing that frightens me is the American approach to ageing and dying -- everything is regarded as a fight against death, and I think at some point I would like to just accept my impending death and not have a myriad of weird medical techniques employed to keep me conscious (and for fucking what? just let me die with some dignity, not withered and noncommunicative and shitting myself in a hospital bed). I just haven’t found that way yet (and like, we can’t fit exercise equipment into this apartment, so while an exercise bike or treadmill sounds like a perfect solution for me, it’s not one I can employ right now).

He’s a demon hunter who lives in a relatively uneventful small town that’s still high in supernatural activity. There’s a local demon hunter community there, but he’s kinda shunned for fighting using the magic of a demon, Azazel.

I mean, I’m 100% down to give Lucian Caelius Luminita to a friend of mine for her story, bc I have nothing to use him in.

A friend of mine and I have been developing this fuckin story for like, a month or so, about her character, Crystal Ruiz, being raised by one of my (sort-of) good parent OCs.

Wayland Smith is a huge crack-type character who unintentionally winds up causing catastrophic destruction in the most ridiculous ways that often come off as impossible and inhuman. What’s worse: This man cannot die and literally only exists for me to come up with ridiculous scenarios to have a good laugh.

I made him for The Sims Freeplay and he became the guy who pissed everyone off whenever I got a daily mission that required negative interactions.

14. Introduce an OC with a tragic backstory

Wilk Argentum: part of an extraterrestrial race made to assimilate with the human ace to determine whether or not they were worth saving after their society collapsed following a major thermonuclear war.

He got along with the remnants of society well, and went on several adventures with people who befriended him, but ultimately, he unwittingly fulfilled his primary programming by condemning the human race to death, despite it being the only thing he’d ever known.

I got these new characters, part of a four-person superhero team I made up for DC Universe Online, and two of them; Wendigo (Power: nature-aligned magic and shapeshifting into man-eating creatures) and Morningstar (Power: Creation-based abilities) slowly develop from casual dating to really strong-ass feelings for each other

There’s also this guy, Dante, who I always wind up shipping with his ex, Michael, but I don’t know how I’d get them back together yet.

Also most of the characters I ship with my friends’ OCs have a special place in my heart, especially if we develop their relationships :3

Jack Winters was the first OC whose story I really shared with another friend, and we got super close from sharing the stories and eventually getting to know each other, and not just our OCs. Hey guys, shipping gets you places.

I only really have one OC with confirmed singing talent, and that is Alto Artrose, who is, ironically, a soprano.

A friend and I normally joke about Lucian Luminita being a much worse parent than we actually portray him in the story; mostly due to him being a single father, who is also a vampire, raising an angry werewolf child.

Dante “Seraphim,” also known by his codename Lucifer, was originally going to be called Lucifer as his true name, and be a child of the personification of Death, being sent to ensure that people die when they are supposed to. And if they don’t, they get murdered by the Reaper’s Son.

The idea was scrapped, but eventually revisited by several other OCs later.

24. If you could meet one OC of yours, who would it be and why?

Aria Hamilton, because she’s the only one here who isn’t fucked up.

25. The OC that resembles you the most (same hobby, height, shared like/dislike for something etc?)

My fuckin Homestuck self-insert, Luke Napier. He’s basically me, but physically fit, attractive, and actually handles his responsibilities properly.

Dante “Seraphim’s” story wound up being heavily influenced by the song “Take Me To Church,” with it’s whole ‘growing out of religion’ theme.

Enoch Branwen, the “Atropos” of this Branwen Moirai. The Branwens preside over the mortality of gods; when an immortal’s time has passed, it is Enoch who is sent to dispatch them. She has killed numerous entities, and is responsible for the Fall of the Old Gods.

29. Which one of your OCs would go investigate an abandoned house at night without telling anyone they’re going?

Aurelio Morgenstern, Wilson Pendleton, and Sora Williams; the problem children.

30. Which one of your OCs would most likely have a secret stuffed animal collection?

Maybe Enoch’s girlfriend, who still doesn’t have a concrete name.

Aurelio Morgenstern blogs about his activities as a demon hunter, not that anyone really listens.

32. Which one of your OCs would be the most suitable horror game protagonist and why?

Ian (motherfucking) Grey. This kid’s story throws him into a killing field made for children with magical powers, where he eventually gets possessed by the Wormwood Star; an entity that throws his magical abilities into overdrive.

Ian has a natural affinity for healing magic, and the Wormwood Star strengthens him to the point where he can heal from injuries almost instantly. The horror of his game isn’t the threat to your survival, it’s from all the pain you endure as you fight your way out of this hellhole. Your enemies can’t kill you, you can’t kill them. But they will hunt you and hunt you until your mind breaks and you can’t fight anymore.

Basically, imagine Dark Souls with no weapons.

Dante “Seraphim” has a twin sister, Aria. Her codename is Lilith.

Aside from the “Seraphim” twins, the Branwens are one of my favorite sibling groups!

They’re like the moirai, but they decide when gods die. Faith, the eldest, predicts the lifespans and destinies of the gods when they’re created. Wolfgang, the middle child, watches over the world and ensures that all the gods and deities are doing their jobs, playing their roles, and having faith in the Branwens’ writings.

When a god steps out of line, or refuses to lie down and die, they send Enoch to do what must be done.

36. Do you have OC pairs where the other part belongs to someone else (siblings, lovers, friends etc)?

HELL YEAH I do.

Lucian Luminita is a vampire, the Branwen siblings are sorta-gods, Dante and Aria “Seraphim” are half-angel and half-demon, respectively, etc.

Enoch Branwen and Aria Hamilton.

Lemme tell you about Become Death:

He’s an ally of that superhero team I mentioned earlier, with Wendigo and Morningstar. Obviously, “Become Death” isn’t his real name, but it’s a nickname that just stuck.

Death is an enigma. He doesn’t really know who he is, where he’s from. He just knows that his job is to punish the wicked. The evil. He takes no pleasure in killing, but it’s what he does best.

Before he died, Death was an infamous serial killer. He was brought back to life by an unknown entity for an unknown purpose, but now, he works in the dark to preserve the light.

He also hasn’t been developed beyond the fact that he wears a fancy suit, and there’s a skull mask grafted onto his face.

Most of the fondest memories I have about OCs is just taking about them with my friends!!

Hnnnnggghhhh alright so lemme tell you about this time I tried to do worldbuilding

So I made this fuckin steampunk-themed world once, right? And it’s still largely unfinished, and there’s only one real place that’s developed in any capacity and that’s the city of Durendal in the nation of Wayland. The Waylandian city is widely known for being amongst the most historical cities in the world. It was one of the most rapidly-advancing cities during the industrial revolution. It was in Durendal where most scholars and inventors joined together to create the first stable airship. It is in Durendal where the strongest council of magicians established its headquarter. It was in Durendal where the infamous Wick Rebellion was cut down by Royal Protector Daniel Maxim. And it is in Durendal where the Licht Sisters will face off against a conspiracy against the Grand Sovereign of Wayland itself.

(That’s not really an OC thing, but hey, it’s the only story concept I have saved rn that I didn’t share from)

Sometimes, for reasons unknown to you in retrospect, you pass up great books because you think that they will not interest you. When you finally stop and read them, you can only despair over what you have missed for so long.

I’m talking about Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series.

They have been sitting on the shelf at my local library for years, and I had consistently passed them up, because of a little faded sticker that reads paranormal romance. Which is not to say that romance is bad, I do read it occasionally, if I am assured that it is really good, or has some other feature that I know I will like. But as I am A) a lesbian, I tend to have less than zero interest in men who are described as devilishly handsome, or rippling muscles, ect.; and B) somewhere on the grey-ace scale, so I tend to have higher standards in romance than see them, must have them, or love triangles, or this person is attractive and rich, lets get married (I know its a fantasy, but it just doesn’t do it for me). Paranormal romance tends to be the worst of the lot, especially in the post Twilight world. So I tend to steer clear.

Then I read Every Heart a Doorway. When I say read, I mean devoured once, reread slowly again, left for a while, reread, put on my Christmas list, didn’t get it, bought it myself, and read at least two more times. If you haven’t read that book you should do so immediately. It has everything, an interesting idea, a fascinating mystery, engaging characters, and rarest of rarities in a semi-mainstream bestseller, queer characters and themes. (Also Jack. She quickly became a fictional crush for me at least.) It was all wrapped in gorgeous and heartbreakingly clear prose and style.

Anyway, that book was ridiculously good. So the other week when I saw her name on this series that I had ignored for years, I thought, yes, I trust this author. There are some authors whose books you will read even if you know nothing about them, or even if every sign points to them not being you cup of tea. People like Niel Gaiman, or Terry Pratchett, or Brandon Sanderson, or Megan Whalen Turner, or Katherine Addison, or Seanan McGuire. So I check out the first two and I definitely do not regret it.

I’m currently partway through the third book and wow does this series deliver. The main character is a half-human, half-fae woman who is a a PI for the local courts of faerie named October ‘Toby’ Daye. I knew I would like her from the moment she said that she wasn’t a lady, she was a sir (because she is a knight). The books have the same sort of fantasy noir tone to them as Jim Butcher’s Dresden books, but exquisitely done and much more cheerful. (It also feels like, just like the Dresden books, this is going to sprout a complex and well executed myth-arc any second now. I eagerly await.)

The plots are mysteries, as befits a fantasy noir setting. They are also really well done. In the first one I just have to applaud the narration, which despite being first person, made it very clear that the villain was super creepy/suspicious, even though the narrator trusted them implicitly. The second book had an excellent variation on a locked room mystery, where the murders seemed impossible by the known laws of the world, but were happening anyway. (Also, wow does that book go hard. I wasn’t expecting that high of a death count. It really wasn’t high at all numerically, but it was like the literary equivalent of a kill em all horror film.) The third book is changing the formula, where we know who the kidnapper is, its rescuing the kidnappees that is the problem.

Worldbuilding is starting out good, with clear signs that it will only improve. It is clearly based mostly on Celtic mythology, with Sidhe and selkies and the Wild Hunt, as well as Oberon, Maeve, and Titania (by the way, even time it is mentioned that they are missing, my myth arc senses tingle). McGuire easily fills in plot holes, using things like glamour and the nightgasts to explain how a society of non-humans hide. She also doesn’t limit herself to European Mythology either. There have been several kitsune characters, and mentions of Djinn and Peri, which makes the setting much more diverse and realistic. I really enjoy the weird streak of practicality, like mostly nocturnal fae working at twentyfour hour grocery stores, and cell phones that don’t work in deep faerie unless you get a dwarf to magically fiddle with it, or shapeshifters needing to raid goodwill for clothes that will fit their new form.

Characters are many and varied. There are a lot of excellent characters, and many of them are introduced quickly and concisely, so that you really get a feel for what they are like from a single scene. SO many of them are recurring. It gives a real feeling of weight to them, to know that this knight will still be upright and honorable (Sir Etienne-very little screen time so far, but checks so many of my boxes. Also, Toby doesn’t like him. I really hope he comes into focus in a future book, I need to know more about him so that he can become a favorite character.) and this undine will still offer healing and sanctuary (Lily of the tea gardens, who has healed Toby many times so far. You get the feeling that they go way back. I am so not here for the blatant foreshadowing that she doesn’t have the power to protect Toby from anything powerful, because you just know that she would try.). Also, there is the way that previously minor characters come into focus and are more important in different books, like Quentin, who had two minor scenes in the first book, but was one of the most important characters in the second.

I’ve compared these books to the Dresden Files, so I feel like I should say at least one thing that these books are doing a hundred times better. The women are so much better written. There are so many of them, with different personalities and priorities, from Lily, guardian healer spirit; to January, mother and scientist; to Dare, a kid who is in a bad situation and wants to get out; to the extremely dangerous Luidaeg, who is older then all the other immortals, and lonely; and many, many more. It’s amazing. Every book passes the Bechdel test easily.

Finally the romance. Three books in and I’m still not sure why that sticker was on these books. There really hasn’t been much of a romance subplot. When the character of Connor was introduced I thought here we go, but the books are nicely subverting my dread. Connor seemed at first glance to be the stereotypical nice guy/childhood friend/Betty (though not really a “Nice Guy”, thank you Seanan McGuire) of the common love triangle, but it is much more complicated than that. He’s actually an ex of Toby’s and their past relationship didn’t work out, and is now unhappily married. Although he seems interested in rekindling his relationship with Toby, she is much more practical, denying him off the bat. She is very conscious of the way it didn’t work in the past, and of her honor, which I really appreciate. The Veronica of our tale seems to be recurring character Tybalt, but so far (two and a half books in) Toby doesn’t seem to realize it. My grey-ace self is really enjoying this, because the romance is being played so, so subtle. From assuming that Tybalt didn’t like her when he was obviously flirting with her, to very casual displays of trust, to him obviously worrying about her being in dangerous situations, to her wondering where he is when he doesn’t show up to bother her. Three books in and Toby has only now admitted to herself that they are sort of friends. It’s slow and very well done, and like I said before, not really important. The romance plot takes up less than 5% of the action, which is an excellent ratio.

As you can probably tell, the Dresden Files are one of my favorite series. These books feel like someone asked me what my favorite aspects of that series are, and what disappointed me, and then tailor made these books for me, personally. I am enjoying them wholeheartedly, and cannot wait to read the rest.
