2023 Year in Review
In celebration of the coming New Year, I decided to do a re-watch of every drama I gave 3 or more stars in 2023. Only 15 made the cut, which given the number of dramas I watched (I started well over 200, although I dropped at least a third of those) is not that many.
(My rating system is pretty simple: 1 ⭐ = terrible/don't recommend/waste of time, 2 ⭐⭐ = pretty good/enjoyable/would recommend to others but probably never re-watch, 3 ⭐⭐⭐ = good/likely to re-watch, 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ = practically perfect/would re-watch frequently. As you can see, it's more about what I personally enjoy than what's objectively great. So some objectively good shows aren't on this list, like La Pluie or Wedding Plan or Our Dating Sim or Doctor Cha or King the Land or Call it Love, because they got a lower score from me because I'm not that likely to ever re-watch them even though I'm glad I watched them and I'll happily recommend them to others. Of course, my ratings are subject to change over time too because I often surprise myself with what I re-watch. Some shows that I originally gave 2.5 stars have eeked out 3.5 stars over the following year or two just because they grew on me and I kept re-watching them.)
As such, my plan to ring in the New Year is to re-watch:
Lost/Human Disqualification - ⭐⭐⭐/⭐ - (IQIYI/Amazon Prime, kdrama, slice of life, healing journey, slight romance, a 42yo woman pushed to the breaking point by life crosses paths with a 27yo man who is mourning the loss of his friend, outstanding dialog, killer A+ acting, tw: infidelity, miscarriage, and suicide BUT DON'T LET THAT SCARE YOU AWAY)
Hit The Spot ⭐⭐⭐ (Viki, kdrama, romcom, 2 women begin hosting a sex advice podcast, funny, sex positive education, extraordinarily relatable, high heat, 8 30min eps)
The Glory ⭐⭐⭐/⭐ (Netflix, kdrama, 36yo woman patiently takes revenge on her childhood bullies, slight romance, incredible dialog, A+ acting, excellent pacing and powerful reveals, tw: the highschool bullies are evil little sociopaths who do some extremely horrific shit)
The Eighth Sense ⭐⭐⭐/⭐ (Viki, gay romance, kdrama, incoming freshman who is a rural-transplant to Seoul meets exiting senior and joins his surf club, gorgeous production, healing past trauma, A+ acting and insanely believable physical chemistry, good OST)
Love Tractor ⭐⭐⭐ (IQIYI, gay, short kbl, big city law student with musical ambitions hides from his responsibilities in the countryside and meets a younger himbo farmer with a heart of gold)
Sing My Crush ⭐⭐⭐/⭐ (IQIYI, kBL, a talented but heartbroken young man is about to give up on his musical dreams when he is adopted by an eager wannabe manager, best friends to lovers, cohabitation, pining, good plot and chemistry)
Moonlight Chicken ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (YouTube, Thai, gay romance + BL, one night stand between a struggling chicken diner owner and a recently promoted office worker turns into more, HS student and lonely deaf boy become the cutest couple to ever cute, A+ writing and acting, themes of: found family, making a home, love matters even when it doesn't end well, class inequality, queer generational divides, letting go of the past, a radically compassionate look at first love, last love, lost love, and unrequited love)
Bed Friend ⭐⭐⭐ (IQIYI, Thai, gay office romance, enemies to FWB to lovers, healing past trauma done right, ridiculously pretty leads, consent kings, high heat, A+ lead chemistry and acting, soft landing in the final 2 eps, tw: sexual assault)
My School President ⭐⭐⭐/⭐ (Viki, Thai, BL, high school boys singing their feelings [well!], wholesome, gentle, sweet and funny, A+ production values, peak low-heat BL with well-executed tropes)
Be My Favorite ⭐⭐⭐ (Youtube, Thai, BL, repressed and fearful boy travels back in time to his college days to woo his crush and falls in love with his supposed rival instead, themes: living each moment to the fullest so you won't have regrets, kindness as a catalyst for character growth and positive change, bravery in the face of uncertainty, telling people you love them can only be a good thing)
Laws of Attraction ⭐⭐⭐ (IQIYI, Thai, gay, mystery/romance lakorn, evil unhinged babygirl lawyer and the heroic idealistic taekwondo instructor who falls for him work together to solve the mystery of his niece's death, loveable granny, A+ lesbians, happy endings all around, great acting and lead chemistry)
Jack O'Frost ⭐⭐⭐ (Viki, Japan, gay, amnesiac young man and his co-habitating ex begin their relationship again, short 6 ep, A+ acting, excellent production values)
Hold my Hand at Twilight ⭐⭐⭐ (Viki, jdrama, twenty-something city mouse meets country mouse and they begin the journey towards making their dreams come true, cohabitation, warm-hearted, angsty 3rd act, A+ acting, excellent banter, post-credit epilogue)
Kiseki: Dear to Me ⭐⭐⭐ (Viki, Taiwan, gay, hardworking med student falls for the gang member he secretly treats, insane plot includes time skip and amnesia [2 tropes I usually hate, but actually done well in this case and not annoying], domesticity, cohabitation, hurt/comfort, friends to lovers, short total runtime)
Fake It Till You Make It ⭐⭐⭐/⭐ (Viki, China, romance, 🔥 lead chemistry, snappy banter, disarmingly honest and vulnerable leads, this couple wants to eat each other for dinner AND dessert but constantly chooses not to because of other life priorities and fears, friends with killer UST to lovers who communicate shockingly well, all the characters feel like real people instead of caricatures)

I play a lot of mobile games. I mean like A Lot. so I decided to say if some frequently advertised games are good or not.
Gardenscapes:
the ads are deciding. which is a shame because the game itself is really cute and fun. it's a standard match three bejeweled styled game with minimal micro transactions. the premise is that you fix up a garden you inherited or something and uncover the towns history and other cool stuff while following the interpersonal relationships of the folks you meet along the way.
10/10 worth playing
Homescapes:
again, the ads are deceiving.
the game is the same as gardenscapes except your butler and our protagonist Austin, (he's a super cute middle aged guy), finds out his parents are going to sell their house because it's getting on in years and a but run down.
he swears to fix up his childhood home so his parents won't have to sell it.
it's a super sweet story and I enjoy cleaning up and learning the history behind each room in the house and uncovering more about Austin's family.
10/10 worth playing
side note, the company playrix, the folks who made these 2 games, have been around for ages and even released a version of gardenscapes for the old ds. a little fun fact.
Manor Matters:
sticking to the same scope,
this game is a hidden object game that mixes homescapes with historical mystery. it's pretty cool and the puzzle panels aren't as cluttered as Mystery Case Files.
They're actually surprisingly practical and clean. though I would argue it makes it harder to find things as a result. it is timer based so I'm sure not everyone would like it.
in most cases, having to use energy to play the game is a big downside to most mobile games but here I feel it helps you take a break when you need it most.
recently they added match 3 to their bag so it changes between finding things and matching.
I like this change since I'm not as good at hidden object games as I used to be.
personally 8/10 but for some it may be a 5/10
I also would like to add that these three games have energy/lives involved in gameplay, however I've noticed that they only deplete if you fail to complete a level. that being said, it is still a mobile game so don't be surprised when you encounter coin eater levels that only seem to get easier after a million attempts. it is possible to play and beat every level you try without spending any money, you just gotta be patient.
also there's not a lot of ads that play in these games. I don't remember ever buying an ad free version and as far as I remember, viewing ads are optional
moving on to something else entirely
My Cafe:
it's a good time waster
if you ever enjoyed games like diner dash, you'd probably like this one. it's laid back, there's no pressure, you just fill cafe orders and sometimes you get stories and special events that shake up the play a bit.
lots of micro transactions and has special in-game currency that you're encouraged to buy. there's plenty of opportunities to earn them though.
6/10 it's enjoyable and a good time waster. sometimes I get the games music stuck in my head
Animal Restaurant:
I know this game made the rounds a lot in the ads. it's exactly how it looks. it's super sweet and cute and wholesome. you run a little restaurant and change out the decor to make more money and draw new customers in.
there are mircotransactions but it's very optional and tucked away in a separate menu you have to find
I really enjoy this one a lot 10/10
My Universe:
I've been seeing a lot of ads lately for this one.
I've been playing it for like maybe 2 years now on and off and it's a pretty decent game. the ads are just like the game, at least the ones I've been getting. though there is one that devates a bit but you just get a sort of compressed look at the gameplay loop, its not that different really.
it's the ad where you cut down materials and take it to one building to earn cash then move to another building to get a better tool to collect tougher materials.
I'd definitely recommend getting the ad free thing cause there's a lot of ads in this game. luckily it wasn't that expensive and the game itself was enjoyable enough to buy it
8/10 would play again, just not all the time
finally
Project Makeover:
I just picked this one up and started playing it. actually it's what inspired me to make this absurdly long post in the first place.
I finally caved after seeing the ads for it everywhere and like a million times so I took a look at it.
If you ever played on the barbie website as a kid and like Loved it, this is the game for you. this is Girl Game to the max, well maybe not that much but it's very much up there.
if you like reality TV or fake reality TV, that's a bonus too.
it very much has that kind of vibe and it is a lot sweeter and much more endearing that the ads make it out to be. I definitely feel like if the game was marketed for what it really was, then maybe it might be more popular. especially since the early 2000s style of internet games is kinda coming back. at least I feel that way.
it's a match 3 game wrapped around a fashion show drama where you clean people up and tidy a room for them to feel better in. very nice stuff.
as always, it has in game currency and micro transactions, however I haven't encountered any ads yet since I started playing like 2hrs ago. so I think that's pretty good.
for me it's a 7/10 but it could easily be someone's 10/10
ps.
I have played that weird murder grandma secret garden bs game. yknow the merge one that was one of the first to capitalize on lily's gardens weird ass ad style? it had a live action ad that had a known older female actor in it. my mind says Kathy bates but idk if that's right
anyway
i played a bit of it and the start of the game hooks you in with the mystery part, keeping super vague but then it's a very strenuous and long merge stuff on a board type game while you fix up the garden.
it's an alright merge game if that's all you want out of it.
but for those who want to know more about what the hell is up with grandma, the game doesn't say.
I found someone on YouTube who has been playing through the levels for a while and after pretty much hours of content and events, I gotta say, as far as I can tell, they ditch the mystery as soon as they get the chance to.
maybe they've updated the game to add more and build it up or whatever since that person has played but it takes a Really long time to progress.
like lily's garden, the ads have very little to do with the game itself it seems.
if any of yall are interested, I can make another post on games I've played . I know it's hard to find a good mobile game that doesn't suck or isn't RAID like blurgh

I Wanna Get Better
Chapter 17
When Zach Stone’s lifelong goal to get famous is achieved, ten years later he’s still dealing with the consequences.
TW: mentions of rehab, drugs, and drinking. lots of angst.
AO3
Tumblr media
Written by @mickeysjones and myself. Gif by @mickeysjones.
New updates every Wednesday (usually).
In the months following Zach’s return to normal life, he had taken Amy to various places they would go to when they were younger. The most frequent, and the favorite if they had to choose, was the diner. It became a staple of their relationship growing up and even ten years later still held that same feeling. Zach needed a neutral meeting zone as he and Amy rebuilt their foundation and this was the most logical choice. The reconnection happened with ease; within two months they were back to arguing about if they should share their fries or order separately, and watching the movies they didn’t get to experience together during the ten years apart.
On the days he wasn’t found across from Amy at a table in the diner or beside her on the Stone family couch, he was with Greg.
It was harder getting ahold of Greg than he originally thought it would be. Zach waited throughout the day for him to be off of work so they could do something together, and then they had to find something that both of them would be okay to do. Zach wasn’t allowed to indulge in any sort of substances when he got out of rehab, and the bar would be too tempting even if he had promised not to order anything. This made hanging out as adults much more difficult. In the end, he and Greg usually just ended up playing an old video game that they used to love. The games weren’t as enjoyable as they used to be, but the company felt the same.
In the morning when Amy was at work, Zach spent time with his mom. He wanted to make up for all the time that he had lost, even if she seemed to be getting sick of him being around all the time. He went grocery shopping when she asked, knowing fully that was her excuse to get him out of the house, and he made attempts to clean up when she was out so that she couldn’t prevent him from moving figurines. He wasn’t going to break another one.
Things were starting to feel normal again. After ten years of not knowing who he was, after leaving all of his loved ones behind, he finally felt like he was home. Zach knew that fact meant it was time to put the final nail in the LA coffin. A chapter of his life he was, surprisingly, very excited to be finished with.
He told Amy before she went to work that he wanted to meet with his brother before they left. She said something along the lines of “Are you sure that’s a good idea? You know how he reacted last time.” And he considered her words. But he needed to at least try to talk to Andy and give him a warning that he was going to become a permanent problem.
Their mom arranged the meeting as if they were kids looking for a play date because it was the only way Andy would agree to hear what Zach had to say. Andy came by the house later that afternoon and stood in the corner opposite of where Zach was sitting.
Zach gestured towards the couch. “Do you wanna-”
“I’m fine.”
Zach quickly dropped his hands back down to his lap. “Okay.” He glanced toward his mom who was already sitting on the couch before going back to Andy. “I’m sorry.”
Andy raised an eyebrow at him. “You’re sorry? Great. Can I go?”
“I have more, I just…”
He looked around the room as he searched for the words. How would he even begin patching this? He left Andy before all of his major life events even had a chance to start happening. Yeah, they fought and they didn’t necessarily hang out, but that didn’t mean they didn't need each other.
“I fucked up.”
“Zach…” He didn’t look over at her, but he knew his mom had given him a disapproving look.
“I shouldn’t have left. I can’t go back and change any of that now. But I can acknowledge that it was a poor choice on my part and I can try to make up for it. I’m gonna try to make up for it. I’m here, I’m-”
“You’ve been here, what, five months? You’re making up for it now?” Andy leaned back against the corner, watching Zach carefully.
“You weren’t really talking to me before.” He mumbled as he looked down at his lap, considering his next words. “I’m not asking you to forgive me, I’m not, I just…” His gaze shifted to their mom again. “Can you give us a minute?”
She looked between the two of them in search of any sign that it was a bad idea to leave them alone. Andy shrugged, so she stood up and walked towards the kitchen to give them privacy.
“I’m moving back.” Zach said. “I owe it to you and mom. There’s nothing for me in LA. I’m sorry that it took me this long to figure that out.”
“You keep saying sorry. It doesn’t mean anything.”
“I know. I know it doesn’t help. I wasn’t here and you have every right to hate me for that. But I’m trying, Andy. I’m trying to be here for mom, I’m trying to make up for lost time…”
He looked down at the coffee table as his thoughts and everything he wanted to say circled his brain. There weren’t any right words for the conversation, but if the wrong words were said, Andy would leave with no hesitation. He had to be precise so there was time to process what was being said before the words ever escaped his mouth.
“You can hate me. You can want to punch me and yell at me. I want you to, I deserve it.” Zach stood up from the chair. “But it’s not gonna be for nothing. There is going to be a point where you don’t want to do those things anymore, and maybe you won’t… You know, maybe you’ll still hate me, but maybe you’ll talk to me about your day or the years I missed.” He shrugged. “Maybe we’ll be able to sit down for family dinner with mom and pretend like things are normal, even if just for an hour, because like it or not, you’re my brother and I love you. I’m not gonna stop trying to fix things between us.”
Silence fell between them. Zach looked around the living room and sat back down in his spot. He really didn’t know what he could say to make Andy talk to him and he was afraid to push any further. Having him in the same room, even in silence, was progress. He didn’t want to drop that progress bar back down because he couldn’t shut up.
“She told me you went to rehab.” Andy finally spoke up and Zach nodded. “So, I guess you’ve been here about three months.” He watched Andy move from the corner over to the couch. “How’d you get cleaned up so fast?”
A confused expression washed over Zach’s face. It had been ten years and his brother wanted to know how rehab went?
“We all saw the headlines, the pictures, even a few videos.”
The last part of the sentence hit Zach like a bullet. He was sure there were dozens of videos of him acting like a total idiot at parties and in the street. But there was one specific video that he wished he could erase from his family’s memory and his own.
“It took two months?”
“I guess I ‘found my motivation,’ or whatever.”
“Amy?”
Zach looked down at his wrist and started to fiddle with the thin bracelet on it.
“The call from dad wasn’t enough?”
“I was dumb.” He shook his head, not daring to look up. “I thought I knew what I wanted. I would take it back if I could.”
“They never stopped worrying about you. You were practically all they would talk about. That video came out and it just got worse.”
Zach nodded along to what he was saying. There was no doubt in his mind he had caused everyone more pain and suffering when he was away than he could have ever caused if he stayed, but Andy felt the need to explicitly say it. He hadn’t had the chance to speak about his side of things and Zach knew that was a part of the healing process. He could take it.
“I don’t hate you.”
Zach looked up at him, his brows furrowed.
“I hate what you did. I hate that you weren’t here, especially when dad died. I’m mad that you chose to come back because of him when you didn’t care to do it when he was alive...” Andy looked annoyed with his own words as he shook his head. “But I don’t hate you.”
Zach opened his mouth to respond but closed it again, not knowing if there was anything he could add. He had a lot of thoughts that he wanted to say, but the ice was extremely thin and he couldn’t risk a crack.
“I’m not reconnecting, I’m not having family dinners outside of this family…” Andy looked over the room before landing on Zach again. “But if you’re really going to be around-”
“I am.” Zach couldn’t stop himself from speaking up. “I’m here. I swear, I’m not… I’m not leaving again.”
“Then I’ll have to deal with seeing you again.” Andy finished his sentence as if Zach never interrupted.
“I can work with that.” He nodded eagerly, desperately trying to keep his expression neutral but the smile on his face formed against his will. Andy shook his head as he stood back up.
“Oh, and I’m going to LA.” Zach stood up beside him, getting a glare from Andy as soon as the words left his mouth. He quickly waved away his look of disapproval. “I’m just getting my things. I’ll be gone this weekend, probably until Monday or Tuesday at the latest. If you wanted to bring your family here, I won’t be here.
“And you’re coming back?” Andy raised an eyebrow at him. Zach could sense the weight behind the question even if he didn’t look him in the eye.
“Yeah. I know we’ve heard that before, but yeah. I’m coming back” He held up three fingers. “Scouts honor.” He quickly put his hand back down. “I… wasn’t in scouts” He muttered under his breath. “I’ll be back Monday or Tuesday.”
Andy rolled his eyes. “Mom, I’m leaving,” he announced, knowing their mom was waiting just around the corner in case things got tense. Like clockwork, she came out to give him a hug and a goodbye. Zach gave him a friendly wave as he walked out of the house. As soon as the door shut, he turned to his mom.
“I think I’m winning him over.” The smile he was trying to dial back finally spread across his face with no limitations.
“Zach,” his mom warned.
“I know, I know. Gentle, easy, slow.” He repeated the words she had been telling him since he got out of rehab and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “But I am winning him over. Thank you for getting him here, by the way. I’m gonna go meet with Greg and Amy.” He breezed around her to get to the door before she could argue.
*****
Zach arrived at the diner and made his way to the usual booth. Amy and Greg were already sitting across from each other talking as he walked up. Greg gave him a wave and Amy stood up to examine him as if he just got out of rehab for a second time.
“How’d it go?” She asked, concern in her eyes and false optimism in her voice accompanied the hesitant smile. Zach could appreciate her trying to make light of things.
He took a step back from her and held his arms out so she could estimate for herself. Her brows furrowed as she looked him over.
“I didn’t get punched, so I’d call it an improvement.” He put his arms back down and gestured to the booth where Greg was still seated. Amy sat down before Zach so he wouldn’t be stuck in a corner with no leg room.
“You expected him to punch you?” Greg asked, gaining the attention from both of them. Zach nodded.
“I mean, he only punched you once.” Amy looked at him. “It’s not like it was a consistent thing that happened every time he saw you.”
“Well…” Zach shrugged before looking around the diner. It was surprisingly empty for a Friday evening. “Is something happening?” He looked at Greg for the answer.
“No, everyone usually just goes to the bar now.”
“We could go to-”
Amy shook her head as she gently wrapped her arm around Zach’s. “I don’t think that’s a good idea because we have a flight. If we go to the bar, we’ll lose track of time.”
“I can set an alarm.” Zach pulled his phone out of his pocket, looked at it, then put it back. “I didn’t charge my phone.” He looked over at Amy with a forced smile.
“How do you not charge your phone?” Greg tilted his head. Zach shrugged again. “Wait, what flight?”
Amy and Zach shared a look. Greg shifted in his seat at the sudden change in atmosphere.
“We’re going to LA.” Zach told him. Greg rolled his eyes and sat back in a here we go again fashion. “It’s only for a few days. We wanted to get the gang back together before we left. One, so we could tell you so you didn’t think we just left. And two-”
“Do you wanna come with us?” Amy offered with a bright smile. She let go of Zach’s arm to sit up in her seat. “We can make a weekend of it. Zach has a place there so we wouldn’t need a hotel, and-”
“There was a mixup and we have an extra ticket.” Zach finished for her. Amy glared over her shoulder at him, he sat up beside her. “Not that we wouldn’t want you to go if there wasn't a mix up. But we didn’t have a ticket before this and you have work. We did think about you, it’s why we’re here to hang out before leaving for the weekend.”
Amy stared at Zach for a second after he finished talking, shook her head, and looked at Greg. “Ignore him. Do you wanna come with us?”
“Be a third wheel on what was supposed to be a solo trip?” Greg raised an eyebrow. “I’m alright, I think.”
“It’s not…” Zach glanced at Amy before continuing. She was already watching him, waiting to judge. He quickly turned to Greg again. “You wouldn’t be a third wheel. We haven’t had a lot of time for just the three of us these last few months and if you wanted a break from… All of this, we have a spot for you.”
“Yeah… I don’t know about that, Zach.”
“Dude, you literally told me you didn’t know I had a crush on Amy until I explicitly told you that I did. It wasn't a problem then, we both love you… Just… Fuck work. Come with us.” He sounded over enthusiastic about the offer, but his friends knew this was his minimum when trying to convince them to do something. "I can give you a shitty tour from the airport to my apartment building." He reached across the table and lightly poked Greg's arm.
Greg and Amy exchanged a look. Zach’s eyes darted between the two of them, waiting for some kind of context. “What?”
“Nothing.” Amy shook her head, hiding her smile behind her glass of water. Zach paused on Greg, thinking he would give a different response.
“It’s just nice to see you like this,” he answered.
Zach’s brows furrowed. “Like what?”
“Just… Like this.” Greg gestured to him which caused Zach to look down at himself to try to figure out what he meant. After a few seconds, he looked back up at them and smiled.
“Yeah.” He nodded. “It’s, uh… Yeah, it feels good.”
"I missed this Zach."
Amy nodded in agreement as she sat her glass back down on the table. "He looks weird though, right?" Her head tilted to study his features, most of which were hiding under a beard and behind loose hair not tucked behind his ear. "Like not in a bad way, but… Like, if you didn't know it was him, would you know it was him?" She looked at Greg again.
He leaned forward for a second, then sat back and nodded. He gestured to his own face. "The scar."
Amy shrugged before turning to look at Zach again. He was frozen leaning on the table, looking at the corner of Greg's side of the booth.
"Am I done being judged?" He glanced over at Greg without moving and sat back when Greg nodded. "So, what do you say, man? You coming?" He held his arms out as if this was a big business deal.
Greg thought about it for a minute before he shook his head. "I think I'll sit this one out."
A frown washed over Zach's face but quickly vanished as the waitress walked up to take their orders. An hour of conversation went by without any of them realizing it until the sun started to set and the street lights came on outside of the diner. Amy stood up to go pay for their meals, leaving Zach and Greg alone at the table.
“She’s a lot happier now.”
He moved his gaze to Greg, unaware that he had previously been watching Amy as she went up to the counter until Greg said something. His brows furrowed and Greg pointed over his shoulder to her.
“She’s doing better, she’s happier. She missed you.”
His eyes flicked over to Amy again for a second before sitting up straighter in his seat and giving Greg his full attention. “Thank you for being there for her.”
“We’re friends. It’s what we do. She would do the same for me if I called her to complain about you.”
“Did you?” He raised an eyebrow. Greg shook his head. “I don’t believe you.”
“Why would I call to complain about you? I was still talking to you for, what, six more months at least.”
Zach’s gaze shifted to the window. He was there when he made the decision to cut everyone off but hearing it said back to him was always a punch in the gut. Whoever he was when he made that call was gone now and if he was lucky, he would never have to see him again.
Amy came back to the table and both of them looked up at her. “Ready to get to the airport?”
Zach looked at Greg. “Last chance.”
“I’m good. You two have fun, take pictures, and be in love.” He waved them off in mock disgust.
“We gotta find him a partner.” Zach looked up at Amy before standing. “Unless…” He looked down at Greg. “Do you want a partner?”
“Goodbye.” Greg smiled at Amy. She nodded before she took Zach’s hand and started to drag him out of the diner.
*****
Amy and Zach got to the airport about an hour before their flight. Things went smoothly as far as boarding and lift off but Zach made sure to let Amy know that if she was nervous, he would be there for her and could hold her hand.
“I’ve been on a plane twice now so… I’m an expert.” He told her as his foot tapped the floor beneath him and he consistently fiddled with the bracelet on his wrist. Before the plane took off, Amy took his hand. His foot tapping slowed at least 70% and he no longer fiddled with the silver band. Neither of them acknowledged the shift in tension when his breathing slowed and color started to return to his face but if they had, Amy would say she was the nervous one so he wouldn’t feel embarrassed about it.
They got to LAX around 2AM. Zach called for an Uber to take them to the apartment. His mind raced as the car sat in traffic and he knew that Amy sensed it because of how often she pointed to a random building and asked what it was. He promised her a real tour before they left, one where they could actually see something aside from the lights on the cars surrounding them, but he knew that she was only doing it to get him out of his own head.
He was supposed to come back five months ago. He wasn’t supposed to stay in Boston for more than a few days and it’s been almost half a year. He didn’t have to worry about his apartment going anywhere, but there was something weighing on him after being gone so long. He knew he had to pack what was salvageable, clean up the apartment, and get his dog who had been well taken care of by his neighbor, thankfully. There was a plan in place and he should feel weightless. He had Amy by his side and he was going back home in a few days. But a part of him felt sick being in the city again.
The car pulled up to the apartment building and Amy’s reaction quickly turned to concern. Zach tried not to notice the look on her face as he got their luggage out of the trunk and brought it up to the front steps.
“It’s not luxurious, we can still go with a hotel if you want.”
She shook her head as she followed him inside. “No, I wanna get the full Zach Stone experience.” She took the only bag with clothes in it from Zach and waited for him to lead her up the steps. “Besides, it’s late and I just wanna sleep.”
Zach stopped at the mailbox to pick up the last five months of bills and then brought Amy to his floor. As they made their way through the dimly lit hallway, Zach paused at a door about three down from his own, then continued walking forward to open up his apartment for Amy and set the luggage bags inside.
“Ignore the mess,” he told her as he flipped the light switch. Amy looked over everything and Zach could already hear the apprehension building in her mind. It was a mess. There was a stack of bills on the counter, chewed up dog toys around the living area, and the dishes were not done. He knew the bedroom wasn’t any better considering how fast he left but that was mostly just clothes that could be pushed onto the floor so they could sleep, he wasn’t worried about that.
“It’s nice.” Amy finally spoke. Zach laughed as he shut the door and dropped the extra mail onto the already existing pile. “It’s nice.” She repeated more sternly. “It could be a little... Cleaner. But It’s nice.”
“I kinda gave up on the whole caring thing when I moved in, so…” He looked around and shook his head. “I don’t even think I own a broom.”
Amy’s brows lifted then fell. “Let’s just get some sleep. Unless…” She looked at the couch. “We’re not gonna fit on that comfortably.” Zach pointed to the door on the back wall. “Is that not a bathroom?”
“It’s a bedroom. The bathroom is attached through there.” He walked over to the door and opened it up. He turned the light on, examined the room, then returned to the doorframe so Amy could follow. “Bathroom, bed, floor where I cracked my phone.” He pointed around the room as he spoke. Amy tilted her head at the last part but he waved off her questioning glance. “Bad night.”
Amy walked over to the nightstand and looked at the paper sitting on it while Zach moved the clothes to a pile in the corner and checked to make sure the bed itself was safe to actually sleep in. He had never brought anyone home but bugs didn’t need an invitation and the place had been empty for five months.
“You really left in a hurry.” Zach looked over at her. She held up the letter and he immediately knew what it was. “I mean, I figure it’s not something you’d pack with you, but it-”
“We should get some sleep.” He interrupted her, moving the comforter to the foot of the bed before walking out to the living room. He flipped the light switch off before returning and falling back onto the bed. Amy tapped the spot beside him.
“What do you wanna do about-”
“We’ll deal with it in the morning.” He waved off the letter in her hand.
“I mean, I can throw it out-”
“Amy, please.” His voice came out more impatient and annoyed than he hoped it would. The look on Amy’s face proved that. A moment passed, he blew out a long breath of air, then looked up at her with a softer expression. “It’s late. We can talk- We can deal with it in the morning. Let’s just get some sleep.”
She nodded and sat the letter back down on the nightstand before climbing into bed next to him. “Do you wanna get changed?”
Zach looked down at himself. He was wearing a plain shirt, a pair of jeans, and he still had his shoes on. He had been back in the city for less than 2 hours and he was already falling back into old habits. His shoes were immediately kicked off and dropped onto the floor. Amy watched him debate whether or not it was worth any energy to fight with the pants. He shrugged as he adjusted in his spot on the bed.
“Alright.” She laughed, settling in next to him. Zach reached over her and turned off the lamp on the nightstand before falling back to her side and wrapping his arms around her. About 20 minutes of silence went by before Zach let out a sigh.
“Amy?”
Another silence fell, Zach was sure she had already gone to sleep. It was probably for the best.
“Hm?” She moved her head lightly. He knew he shouldn’t bother her. It was late, she was already asleep, they’d have plenty of time to talk in the morning when they were cleaning. “Is everything okay?” She tilted her head up to look at him.
He bit the inside of his cheek.
Don’t do this right now. Just go to sleep. It’s 3AM, go to sleep.
“Yeah.” He nodded and gave her a kiss on the top of her head. “I- It’s dumb. I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s okay.” She sat up and looked down at him. “What’s wrong?”
He looked over at the nightstand and Amy followed his line of vision before looking back down at him. He never looked away. “I miss my dad.” There was a small crack in his voice when he said it, he cleared his throat to distract from it.
The room was almost pitch black, Amy wouldn’t be able to see the attempted water build up in his eyes as easily as she could if it were morning and he was thankful for that. He moved his hand over his face, and Amy laid closer to him than she was previously. Neither of them said anything else for the rest of the night, but Zach was more than happy falling asleep with her head on his shoulder and the sound of her breathing filling the silence around them.
*****
Zach walked down the street to get to the convenience store on the corner around 11PM. It was a 24 hour shop and he usually made his trips at night due to there being less of a crowd. However, he had chosen to do it this time because his body hadn't completely settled from the line he did earlier in the day and if he wanted to try to sleep at all, the walk was necessary.
It was surprisingly cold out with the breeze. It reminded him of summer nights back home, and he wondered if those summer nights were ever going to be something he would get to experience again without feeling guilty for being gone so long. His plan was to stay away, and he did a great job pushing everyone out of his life to accomplish it. They most likely wouldn’t want to see him if he ever did return, so he tried not to think about it.
He did his shopping for his usual freezer meals and pre-packaged snacks and then he made his way back home. On the way out of the store, his phone rang. It was late, and he didn't have any friends. A part of him wanted to just ignore it, but there was a larger part that told him to answer.
He held the phone to his ear as he continued down the street. "Hello?”
"Zach Stone?"
He hesitated. The woman on the other end sounded slightly intimidated but professional. She was someone's assistant if Zach had to guess. "Yeah."
"Mr. Johnson wanted me to call and let you know that it's a no."
Zach paused on the sidewalk. "No?"
"Yes, he wanted you to find out as soon as possible so that you wouldn't have to call back asking if-"
"Why is it a no?"
"He just doesn't feel like the movie is a right fit for the company-"
"The right- I'm sorry." He laughed. "The right fit for the company? The company promoting and producing movies for teens that also had a hand in funding the new Fifty Shades movies, that company?" He waited a second for a response before starting again. “Let me talk to him.”
“He’s not in right now, it’s why I’m calling to let you kn-”
“No, he is in. He just doesn’t have an excuse as to why-”
“It’s late, he went home earlier-”
“Put him on the phone.” Zach continued walking to get to his apartment. “I wanna talk to him.”
“He asked me to call you-”
“I don’t care why he asked you to call me. If he wants to reject my fucking movie he has to at least have the dignity to tell me why.”
“I’m afraid that won’t be-”
“What’s your name?” Zach attempted to pull out all of the charm he could with this one question. While he wasn’t known to be the most charming person, or the nicest recently, he could fake it over the phone.
“Alison.”
He nodded, slowing his walk down until he paused on the corner of the street. His apartment was a few buildings to the right so he could finish the call here.  “Alison, can you please tell Mr. Johnson that I would like to talk about this? I think it would be good for everyone if we could just-”
“It’s a no, kid.” A man’s voice came over the phone.
Zach dropped his head and sighed.
“Look at your reputation, look at what you’re doing. You’re a flight risk. Good luck getting anything picked up right now. Try lying low for a bit, come back in a few years. We’ll talk then.” The call ended and Zach held back the urge to throw his phone out into the street in front of him.
Like I’d want to work with your fucking company anyway.
Zach shoved his phone into his pocket before turning down the block to get to his building. As he turned to go up the stairs, he saw a shadow poke up behind a trash can and, instead of going inside, went over to investigate.
There was a large possibility that it was just a raccoon but the worst case scenario would be death and he was already pretty accepting of that outcome most days, so he could handle a case of rabies if this ended badly. When he rounded the corner to see what the animal was, an over-excited German Shepherd popped into his view.
Zach quickly jumped back as the dog jumped forward towards him. It looked healthy and friendly, but he didn’t know the first thing about dogs. After a few seconds of judging from afar, he took a step closer and bent down.
“Hey…” He held his hand out for the dog to sniff. “What are you doing out here?” The dog sat down in front of him with a tilted head as if he were judging Zach in return.
There was a blue collar around the dog’s neck. Zach examined it for any kind of information, but the tag was empty. “You’re a runaway, too?” He gave the dog a pat on the head.
Knowing he could easily sneak a dog into his apartment, he tried to sit on the sidewalk and think of every reason he shouldn’t do that. The dog could belong to someone, but the collar had no information. He couldn’t take care of himself let alone another living thing, but he did read a few stories about how pets can help you find routine and improve mental and physical health. He didn’t have money for a pet, but he could sell some things and change that.
“What do you think?” He stood back up and the dog followed his movements. “Wanna come inside?”
He walked up the steps and opened the door to the building. There was no hesitation on the dog’s part, walking inside as if he already lived there.

Match Made in Heaven - Harry Potter
Tumblr media
Title: Match Made in Heaven Pairing: Harry Potter x Granger!Reader Summary: Harry spends most of his days living amongst muggles to avoid the fame that follows him in the wizard world. Concealing his identity isn’t a problem until he falls in love with a muggle that seems all too familiar. A/N: For the anon that wanted Harry falling in love with a granger!reader without knowing she’s Hermione’s sister. This is noncanon compliant, as Hermione never obliviates her family. Feedback is always welcome and requests are open!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry spends far more time in muggle London than he ever imagined he would. He rents a decent sized flat in a muggle apartment building, shops in muggle clothing and food stores, and he even finds himself taking the tube or bus over apperating or the Floo Network. Harry loves magic and he loves being a wizard, but after spending the first 18 years of his life in the wizard world limelight, he craves a sense of normalcy.
In the muggle world he isn’t Harry Potter the boy who lived. He’s Harry Potter, the guy I sat next to on the tube. Or Harry Potter, my quiet neighbor who always says hello. In the muggle world he’s just Harry Potter, and he really likes that. He likes being able to go to a restaurant for a meal without being asked for his autograph, and he can buy his boxer briefs without being stopped for a picture.
Of course, he’s still fully involved in the Wizarding World. He pops into Diagon Alley for all of his magical shopping from time to time, he has a drink at the Leaky Cauldron with the boys from school every Saturday, he has a job at the ministry that he loves and every Sunday he conceals a random field in the country side so he can spend hours chasing around a golden snitch on his firebolt. Harry has even popped into Hogwarts for guest lectures or just to see Hagrid.  And of course, he’s at the Burrow frequently, whether it’s for a major holiday, birthday or just for dinner on a random weekday.
Harry doesn’t hate the wizarding world he just prefers the anonymity living in the muggle world gives him. So, it really only makes sense that he falls in love with a muggle girl too.
“If you ask me there’s far too many options for something as simple as milk. Milk is milk, is it not?”
Harry turns to look at the young woman standing next to him at the grocery store, and his jaw practically drops when she does the same. This woman is by far, the most beautiful woman Harry has ever seen. There’s something familiar about her, and yet he can’t quite figure out what it is. She gives him a warm smile, and Harry does his best to return it.
“I agree wholeheartedly,” he says with a nervous chuckle. “I sometimes grab a different brand hoping to notice some kind of difference and there never is.”
She laughs, turning to look back at the milk. “Well what’s your go to then? I’ll try yours if you try mine?”
Harry bites his lip. This is by far the strangest interaction he’s ever had with a muggle, but he finds is quite enjoyable. “Sounds like a plan to me.”
Harry and the woman both reach into the cooler case, and their hands brush when they reach for the same bottle of milk. Harry pulls his hand away quickly, a slight blush painting his cheeks. The woman turns to look at him, the warm smile still on her face.
“Clearly you have great taste in dairy products,” she says playfully, and Harry can’t believe that a woman this beautiful is flirting with him. She grabs the bottle they both had gone for and hands it to Harry.
“You know what they say, great minds think alike,” he jokes, nodding in appreciation as he grabs the milk. He places it in his hand basket and watches as she grabs her own bottle. “I’m Harry,” he introduces.
The young woman turns to face him as she places the milk in her own basket. “I’m Y/N, it’s wonderful to meet you Harry.”
Y/N stretches her hand out and Harry grabs it, trying to ignore the spark of electricity that runs up his arm at the contact. As their handshake ends the woman gives him a wave, but Harry grabs her arm lightly as she turns to leave. “Wait, Y/N. Would you like to get dinner with me? Tomorrow night.”
Harry is just as surprised by his boldness as Y/N is. He’s usually not one to be so outgoing, but he’s become fascinated with this woman in the few short minutes they’ve known each other, and he has to see her again.
“I would love that,” she responds, the warm smile that Harry is already fond of returning.
“Brilliant,” he says, smiling back at Y/N. “There’s this diner that I love that’s not far from here. It’s called Barney’s, maybe you’ve heard of it?.”
Y/N chuckles. “I know Barney’s. I go there like, once a week.” She pauses. “Same favorite milk brand and same favorite restaurant? I think maybe we’re a match made in Heaven, Harry.”
Harry blushes and scratches at the back of his neck. “Perhaps so. I’ll meet you there tomorrow? Say 7:30?”
“I’ll see you then.”
-
“You’re going on a date?” Ron asks Harry in surprise the next day at work.
Ron and Hermione are always trying to convince Harry to move to Diagon Alley above Flourish and Blotts so they can be neighbors. They’re always telling him how quiet it is, how their owl doesn’t seem out of place to their neighbors and how nice it is to be surrounded by people that are like them. One of their efforts to convince him to move is to invite him over for dinner at least once a week. Ron has just invited Harry over, and he respectfully declined.
Harry rolls his eyes at Ron. “Why is that such a surprise.”
“No offense mate, but you don’t exactly have the best track record with women,” Ron points out with a chuckle.
Harry narrows his eyes at Ron. “Either way,” he says, not wanting to admit Ron is right, “I’ve got a date tonight so I’m going to have to skip out on dinner.”
“Fair enough, mate. So, who’s the lucky lady? A bird we went to school with?” Ron asks, knowing Hermione will want all of the details.
Harry shrugs. “Just a muggle I met last night at the grocery store.”
Ron gives Harry a look of surprise. “Last night? You met a girl and asked her out in the same night? That’s definitely a first for you.”
“Oh, shove it. You act like you’re the king of romance or something. How many years did it take you to grow a pair and ask Hermione out?” Harry teases, dodging the rolled-up ball of parchment Ron tosses at him. “We bonded over the fact that we like the same type of milk.”
“Muggles are weird man,” Ron says with a laugh, turning back to the pile of work on his desk.
-
“So, what do you do for work?” Y/N asks, taking a sip of her drink.
Harry takes a sip of his own drink to give himself time to think of an answer. This is the only downside of living amongst muggles: trying to figure out how to explain the magical parts of his life. He somehow managed to stutter through a decent explanation as to why he keeps an owl as a pet, but he always gets nervous when it comes to his career.
“I work in law enforcement,” he responds a moment later. “I’m a detective of sorts.”
Y/N raises her eyebrows. “Wow, that’s quite impressive. Being a detective at such a young age. I bet you’re a natural.”
Harry blushes, and takes a bite of his food to hide it. He’s almost glad that Y/N can’t know the truth about the more magical bits of his life. Being an Auror is less impressive when you know that Harry didn’t even graduate from school and was able to walk onto his job because someone decided that Harry would be his downfall when he was only an infant. “What about you? What do you do for work?”
“I’m working part time at the public library while I finish up medical school,” Y/N explains with a smile.
Harry scoffs playfully. “You’re sitting over there knowing you’re in medical school and calling my career impressive? You are far too humble, Y/N.” Harry feels a sense of pride when Y/N blushes and looks away. “So why medical school?”
Y/N shrugs, trying to brush off Harry’s kind words. “Both of my parents are dentists, and I wanted to make them proud. I spent a lot of time with them growing up, hanging out in the office. I watched them help person after person and it was inspiring. Made me realize I want to do the same thing.”
Harry absolutely melts at Y/N’s words. Harry has lived his whole life trying to make his parents proud. They gave their lives to help keep the wizarding world safe and all Harry wants to do is the same.
He clears his throat. “Seems we have that in common as well.”
“Your parents are dentists?” she asks with a laugh.
Harry laughs as well, shaking his head slightly. “My parents worked in a law enforcement type field. They were killed, when I was young because of it. They dedicated their lives to keeping me, and countless others safe. And all I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid was make them proud and do the same.”
Y/N gives Harry a sad smile as she reaches out to touch the hand he has resting on the table. Harry allows her to intertwine their fingers, smiling when she squeezes them lightly. “That’s amazing, Harry,” she says softly. “You seem like an amazing person, and I’m sure they’re proud of you.”
That night when Harry gets home he pens out a quick letter to Ron, the feeling of Y/N’s lips on his as they kissed goodnight still fresh in his mind.
I think I’m in love.
-
“Harry? What are you doing here?” Y/N whispers, unable to keep herself from giggling.
It’s been a few days since his date with Y/N and Harry hasn’t been able to get her out of his head. He recounted the date several different times to both Ron and Hermione, and Mrs. Weasley had even asked him about it when he went to the Burrow for dinner. Each time he thought back to what happened he found himself getting happier and even though he and Y/N were going to see each other that night, Harry needed to see her again. So, on his lunch break he picked up some coffee and headed to the London Public Library.
Harry holds up the cups of coffee, a smile spreading across his face. “Got time for some coffee?”
Y/N returns his smile and nods. She comes out from behind the desk she had been working at and gestures for Harry to follow her. Y/N leads him out of the library and over to her favorite bench in the courtyard. It’s under a great big willow tree, and Y/N often spends hours out here, just enjoying the warm summer breeze, thinking about nothing.
“I didn’t think I’d see you until tonight,” Y/N says, breaking the comfortable silence that had settled around them.
Harry shrugs, taking a sip of his coffee to keep from getting flustered. “I wanted to see you again, and I couldn’t wait until tonight,” he admits honestly.
In lieu of responding, Y/N touches Harry’s cheek lightly and leans in to kiss him. Their lips move together softly, and when their kiss breaks both of them are blushing slightly. “I’ve been dying to see you again as well.”
Harry bites his lip before he leans in to kiss Y/N again briefly. “I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind,” he murmurs, pressing their lips together again.
There are only a few people in his life that Harry has ever immediately felt comfortable around, and not very many of them are female. Whenever he’s around a woman he has a romantic interest in, Harry tends to get all clammy, and he works himself up so much he doesn’t know what to say. But he’s never felt that same awkwardness with Y/N. Ever since they first locked eyes Harry felt a sense of familiarity with her, and he feels like he can say anything around her.
Y/N smiles against Harry’s lips, her brain fuzzy. She hasn’t stopped thinking about him since that night at the grocery store. She wasn’t one to usually strike up a conversation with a stranger, but when she saw Harry just standing there she felt this need to talk to him.
“I’m gonna be honest with you,” she says with a quiet chuckle when their kiss breaks.  “I never thought we’d get this far.”  When Harry knits his eyebrows together in confusion, Y/N brings a hand up to cup his cheek. “When I saw you in the store that night I thought you were cute, and I had to say something to you. And then I just started waffling on about milk. I figured it would freak you out or something.”
Harry laughs, and grabs the hand Y/N had placed on his cheek so he can intertwine their fingers. “I’m not gonna lie, I did find it a bit odd. But in an endearing sort of way,” he adds, not wanting to make Y/N feel insecure. “You are by far the most interesting and beautiful person I’ve ever met before. And I’ve met some weird people, so I’d take that as a compliment.”
“You don’t really mean that,” Y/N responds playfully, lightly shoving Harry’s shoulder. “You’re just trying to get in my head, throw me off my game so you win at minigolf.”
Harry laughs and squeezes Y/N’s hand. “You’re on to me, love. You’re bloody on to me.”
-
“Do you think I should tell her?” Harry muses, looking up at Ron and Hermione. They’re eating lunch together in the cafeteria at the ministry, and Harry’s mind keeps wandering to Y/N.
“Tell who what?” Ron asks, his words muffled by the food in his mouth.
Hermione hits Ron’s arm, rolling her eyes playfully. “Harry’s obviously talking about Y/N, Ron. Considering she’s all he talks about these days.”
Harry blushes. “Anyway,” he drawls, not wanting to acknowledge that Hermione is right. “I’ve been thinking about telling her about me. Ya know, that I’m a wizard.” Hermione drops her fork and Ron looks at him wide eyed. “What?”
“Harry you know you can’t do that,” Hermione scolds. “It’s against wizard law to reveal yourself to a muggle.”
“Well you can if you marry them,” Ron adds, causing Hermione to pinch his arm. “Ow, what was that for?” he asks, rubbing the spot.
“Harry hasn’t even asked Y/N to be his girlfriend yet, marriage is certainly not an option for him right now and I don’t want you putting ideas into his head, Ronald,” Hermione retorts.
“And who said the idea wasn’t already in his head,” Ron responds, gesturing wildly towards Harry. “He’s been in love with her since their first date.”
Hermione turn to Harry then. “I’m sorry, what?”
Harry shrugs his shoulders, a sheepish look on his face. “She’s the most amazing person I’ve ever met, Hermione. How could I not be in love with her?”
“You’ve only been seeing her for a few weeks, Harry,” Hermione says softly. “I just think it’s far too early to say you’re in love with her.”
I know what I feel,” Harry insists, his tone becoming harsh.
Hermione gives Harry a look. “If you really love her then why not make things official? Then you can revisit the whole wizard thing in a year or so.”
Harry looks down, picking at his napkin. “It’s not that I don’t want to make things official. But the more I let her in the harder it is to explain away the magical parts of my life.” When Hermione places her hand on top of his Harry looks up at her. “I already have to hide so much from her. I’m afraid that if I lie even more she’ll just get tired of it and leave.”
“Harry,” Hermione says sadly, squeezing Harry’s hand. “I know, it’s scary. But I don’t think now is the right time to reveal everything to her. And if she feels as strongly for you as you do her, then you have nothing to worry about.”
“Yeah, okay,” Harry agrees reluctantly, wanting to move on. “So, how are the plans for the engagement party coming along?”
-
“What’s on your mind, love? You’ve been awfully quiet tonight,” Y/N comments, looking up at Harry.
Harry leans down and presses a kiss to her forehead. It’s been a few days since his conversation with Ron and Hermione and he hasn’t stopped thinking about it. Deep down he knows that Hermione is right, that he should wait to tell her about him. But he also knows how strongly he feels for her already, and that he wants to let her in to every part of his life.
“Just been thinking about you. Us,” he says a moment later, pulling her closer into his chest. They’re cuddled up on Harry’s couch, watching some film he hasn’t paid an ounce of attention to.
Y/N hums and sits up so she can properly look at Harry. “Thinking good things, I hope.” Her tone is light, but Harry can tell there’s a hint of nervousness in her voice.
Harry reaches out and lightly grips Y/N’s chin so he can bring their faces together and press a sweet kiss to her lips. “Always good thoughts when I’m thinking of you,” Harry says softly as he pulls away. “I know we’ve only been seeing each other for a few weeks but,” Harry pauses, taking a deep breath. “I love you, Y/N. Even if it’s far too early to say that and you don’t feel the same quite yet.”
“Oh Harry,” she whispers, before closing the gap between them. Y/N kisses Harry slowly, trying to reassure him and convey all of her feelings for him at the same time. “I love you too,” Y/N murmurs when they finally break apart. “I knew we were destined to be together the moment we reached for the same milk,” she jokes.
Harry chuckles and kisses her again briefly. “If you’re going to be with someone for the rest of your life it’s imperative you have the same taste in dairy products.”
“Rest of your life?” Y/N asks quietly, a pink blush on her cheeks.
Harry sputters, his face heating up as well. “I. I well. Um. Y-you know. I um.”
Y/N giggles at how flustered Harry is and presses a kiss to his cheek. “It’s okay, love. While I’m not saying we should run out and get married right now, I’m not opposed to that happening with us someday in the future.”
Harry smiles at Y/N, his heart fluttering in his chest. While it’s not a marriage proposal, it’s the promise of something more and it’s good enough for Harry. “Are you busy Sunday evening? I’ve got this party thing to go to in the afternoon but there’s something I want to show you.”
“I’ve got this family thing for most of the day. I’m not sure when it’ll be over, but I can sneak away, make time for you,” Y/N responds sweetly.
Harry kisses Y/N hard, the movie they had put on long forgotten.
-
“Harry! There you are!” Hermione greets excitedly, coming over to hug Harry. He arrived at The Burrow for Hermione and Ron’s engagement party well over an hour ago, but both of his friends had been busy talking to their other guests. So, he just grabbed a drink and milled about, occasionally stopping to talk to people from school.
“Hermione,” Harry greets, returning her hug. “You look wonderful. You’re glowing.”
Hermione blushes and releases Harry from her hug, choosing to grab his hand instead. “Come with me. I want you to meet some of my family.”
Harry follows behind Hermione dutifully, finishing off the rest of his drink for a bit of liquid courage. He would have been happy sticking to the shadows for the rest of the afternoon so he could slip away to meet up with Y/N, but he’s going to be the best man at the wedding in a few months, so he should probably mingle for just a bit before he heads out early.
“You remember my parents, right?” Hermione asks as they reach a small group of people.
Harry nods and releases Hermione’s hand so he can shake her parent’s hands. “Of course. Dr. Granger, Dr. Granger. It’s wonderful to see you again.”
“And this is my sister,” Hermione says, causing Harry to look at the girl who has just arrived.
Harry turns to shake her hand, but all of the air gets sucked out of his lungs and his mouth runs dry. “Y/N?” Harry asks, surprised.
“Harry?” Y/N responds, sounding just as shocked as he does.
“What are you doing here?” They both ask at the same time, causing them to erupt in a fit of giggles.
“I went to school with Hermione and Ron, they’re my best friends in the entire world,” he explains, trying to ignore the fact that everyone around them is starting. “Hermione’s your sister?” When Y/N nods Harry continues. “That’s why you seemed so familiar when I first met you. You guys have the same eyes.”
“Care to let the rest of us in on what’s going on?” Ron asks, looking between Y/N and Harry.
Harry reaches out and grabs Y/N’s hand, intertwining their fingers. “Y/N is the girl I’ve been seeing the past few weeks.”
After Y/N and Harry explain their whirlwind romance to Ron, Hermione and the small crowd of Weasley’s and Grangers that has gathered around them, they sneak off together to the corner of the large tent, leaving quite a few perplexed people behind them.
“I can’t believe you’re the Harry. The one I’ve heard about practically non-stop since I was 13,” Y/N teases as they take a seat at an abandoned table.
Harry blushes, squeezing Y/N’s fingers. “I can’t believe Hermione never mentioned having an older sister.”
“From what I remember you three were always getting into trouble back at school. She probably just didn’t have the time,” Y/N muses with a laugh. Y/N pauses, reaching up to cup Harry’s cheek. “I can’t believe that out of all the times we could have met, we finally met in the milk section of our local Tesco.”
Harry laughs at that and he turns his head so he can press a kiss to Y/N’s palm. “I’ve been stressing for weeks about whether or not I should tell you the truth about me. About what I am and who I am. And as it turns out that was all for nothing because you already knew all about it, even if you didn’t realize it.”
Y/N leans forward and kisses Harry lightly. “I kind of had a bit of an inkling that you we’re just some normal bloke,” Y/N admits sheepishly.
“What gave it away?” Harry asks in shock. “I thought I was pulling it off quite well,” he huffs.
Y/N rolls her eyes playfully. “Harry, love you have a pet owl in the middle of London. That’s a bit of an odd pet to keep. Unless you’re a wizard.”
Harry chuckles. “Alright you got me there.” Harry pauses, frowning slightly. “Although this ruins my plan of sneaking off early to see you so I could tell you I’m a wizard. I guess we’ll have to just stick it out until the end of the party.”
Y/N glances over her shoulder at Hermione and Ron. “I dunno, my sister and Ron seem quite busy,” she comments with a grin. “There’s so many other people here, do you think they would notice if we slipped away?”
Harry returns Y/N’s grin before he kisses her briefly. “Even if they do, who cares? I’m sure I’ll get an earful from them tomorrow either way.”
Y/N and Harry sneak out of the tent hand in hand, ready for whatever curveball life throws at them next.

Meeting and falling in love with Jimmy Darling (Black!Male!Reader) would include...
Requested: Nope!
Warnings: Some racism (nothing deep I promise), kinda gross(ish) descriptions of abnormal feats, a bit of angst (sorry not sorry)
A/N: I'm a big fan of Jimmy Darling, and Freak Show is like in my top 3 favorite seasons of AHS, so it's only a matter of time that I wrote a fic for it! I'm probably gonna write at least one set of headcanons/imagines for each Evans' with a Black!Reader, so stay tuned for future posts! Btw this takes place during the very first episode when all the freaks are still alive and before like any of the traumatic shit occurs throughout the entire season! Upon finishing it, this has been my most enjoyable AHS fic to write (so far) so I’ll definitely be doing more Jimmy stuff soon! :))

Your family had moved into Jupiter not too long ago after touring many areas of Florida, you belonged to a troop of performers who were looking to make a name for themselves within the South
Having been born into a circus you were quite eager to meet other groups like your own and after hearing about Fraulien Elsa’s Cabinet of Curiosities, you couldn’t help but feel an eagerness grow within you
You met Jimmy when you happened to visit a local diner that he goes to frequently and the two of you were automatically drawn to one another
Upon entering you go to sit down on one of the stools, finding yourself sitting next to a male with dirty blonde hair, a nice tan, and a round face
He looks over at you momentarily, his smooth hair in a style that reminds you of the snood of a male turkey, and you can’t help but laugh to yourself at the similarities
You notice a large pair of mittens covering his hands, at some point he catches you staring at them but you make sure to calm his sudden rise of anxiety that's now etched across his face
“Nice gloves man! Wish I had a pair as cool as yours!” You slightly whisper over to him which causes the corners of his mouth to stretch from ear to ear
You do your best to flag down a server behind the counter but nobody pays you any mind, that is until you wait patiently for a waitress to come near your side of the counter, and touch the end of her fingertips briefly in an attempt to get her attention
She pulls her hand away briskly and shoots you a dirty look, which immediately causes the male you had met earlier to shoot up from his seat in a flare of anger
Knowing his intentions already, you quickly grab the arm of his leather jacket, and look up at him with a soft expression which causes his temper to die down
He jerks his head towards the door and asks in a firm tone “Wanna get outta here?” ”Thought you’d never ask.”
Next thing you know, you’re introducing yourself to the brown haired male, who you find out is actually named Jimmy Darling which you’ve heard before because your family told you about the local circus within Jupiter
You hang out near an abandoned dirt road, next to Jimmy’s motor bike, and you two go on and on about being the kids of known freaks
You talk about how the majority of your family immigrated from all over the world and eventually came to America, where they became known for being one of the only all Black circuses in the whole world
Jimmy couldn’t help but ask a bunch of questions about your experiences as well as your family's legacy, finding the stories about how you blended your culture into your acts to be extremely fascinating
You explained how you had inherited some weird birth defect that pretty much all the males in your family had and that you couldn’t feel pain the same as others so you were able to hammer nails into the inside of your nose or eat glass and be completely fine afterwards
The brown haired man couldn’t help but ask which end the glass would come out of but you only winked and asked him to maybe help you search for it later on in private he readily blushed at the idea
The only thing Jimmy had to show you were his hands, which you found out were deformed, some of the fingers joined together which you had never seen before
You learned that he felt quite secure with you and elated to be around someone else that he could relate to, you reciprocated those feelings by tenderly taking his hands into your own and planting soft kisses on them
A flicker of surprise crosses his face before turning into something else, something that you would eventually figure out was love but for now you let his hands slip from yours as he cleared his throat softly
“I gotta ask...why didn’t you teach that waitress a thing or two about respect?” “People like that are very quick to twist my actions of standing up for myself into a way of looking like they’re the victim. Besides, I don’t like to show them that they effect me. Just gives them more power.”
Jimmy nodded slowly, having never thought of any altercation that way, especially since he liked to use his fists the most even if it wasn’t guaranteed that he would win
He offered to take you to see the circus grounds and you happily obliged, your thirst for adventure was growing by the minute, and you would've loved for someone like Jimmy to satiate it
He climbed onto his bike and motioned for you to join him which you happily did, but sadly you couldn’t resist the urge to squish the other males sides which earned you an abrupt fit of giggles and hand swats
He explained how he was a the son of a bearded lady and strong man, he spoke quite highly of his mother but never once described or gave you the name of his dad
When you both arrived, he showed you around the performance tent where all the magic happens and happily introduced you to the many freaks that lived in the area
You found yourself enjoying the company of Ma Petite in particular, who utterly adores your hair and its thick texture
You mingled well with the other freaks and found a really good friend in Amazon Eve as well as Pepper and Salty, who you found out were both happily married to one another
Soon you found yourself hanging out more and more with Elsa Mars’ troop, even introducing your parents to Jimmy's mother, who was named Ethel, and got along perfectly with your folks
At some point Elsa asked if you wanted to perform here and there with her group, which you swiftly agreed to and soon you had a little act of your own
You gained lots of attention with your cringe worthy stunts of eating insects, nailing your nose to boards, and than eating said nails afterwards with no harmful repercussions
Soon you had begun to stay over at Jimmy’s trailer from time to time, helping him with his acts, and even teaching him ways to calm his nerves before each one
The two of you would not only travel everywhere together but also get into trouble everywhere as well, eventually being seen as two peas in a pod
One of your favorite things to do was take Ma Petite and Jimmy out at night to see the glistening stars in the sky
“Diamonds!” She says as she points to one of the brightest stars in the sky, you and Jimmy would smile, and you’d shake your head in agreement “Diamonds!”
One night you would lead Jimmy out to one of the many dirt roads around the circus, having parked his motor bike in a grassy area just next to the pathway
You sat up as far as you could onto the bike seat, then coaxed Jimmy over so he could sit on the remaining end of it, which he didn’t have to think twice about doing
You were now face to face with him as you softly ran your tongue across your full lips, a slight wave of concern filled Jimmy’s eyes as he watched your own fill with tears
He cupped your cheeks in his thick hands, slowly leaning you forward in order to plant a kiss onto your forehead “You know you can talk to me about anything...right?”
You nodded against his head and gently leaned back in order to look him in his eyes, the moonlight hitting them perfectly, so that they shined like pearls
You notice that he has the same look on his face that he gave you when you kissed him on his hands during the first day you two met
“You know...of all the things I had imagined would ever happen to me when I moved here, I never thought I would fall in love...”
Jimmy was only taken aback briefly but you could tell he knew, and he felt it to, but the two of you had shunned the idea of it away but you just couldn’t take it anymore
“I never thought I would fall in love either, looking the way I do...but here I am.”
A few moments went by before you burst into gleeful laughter, wiping the tears and snot from your face before pulling the other male into a passionate kiss
He kissed back with no hesitation and soon you and the Lobster Boy were crying together, a ripple of pure bliss and safety washing over you two while the diamonds in the sky shined down as if they were crying in unison with the both of you

Word Count:
Pairing: Mafioso!Billy Hargrove x Reader
A/N: another work before all my other WIPS? What a surprise.. :,)
Warnings: general creepiness, mafia activity, illegal acts, cursing, implied dirty desires
Summary: Billy, an infamous mafia crime boss, takes an odd liking to a cute diner waitress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
California seemed like the perfect place for you and your larger-than-life dreams. You could see it now, finding love under the summer sun in Cali, living in beachy bliss among salty air and a never ending sun. It seemed perfect- before you arrived, that is. You started off with a job as a waitress at a small diner with an employer who knew nothing of personal space and living quarters that could be described as nothing more than shabby. However, as time passed, you started dealing with things that were out of the ordinary to say the least.
It wasn’t that you didn’t appreciate it, but you were sure what was happening was a horrible accident, or something to be paid back later. There were huge amounts of money being transferred into your bank account. You didn’t touch any of the excess cash, seeing as how there was so obviously something wrong going on. Which you were sure there had to be, because who willingly gave out that much money to some lowlife waitress?
Billy Hargrove. An infamous mafia boss risen from small town Hawkins, Indiana with a hell of a lot of emotional turmoil that nobody spoke of. Hargrove’s pockets were filled with loads of cash, and he was saddled with anger issues to surpass his own father, along with a rock hard exterior that was only let down for the closest to him on special occasion- if that. That man, he would. Manager with no personal space? Tommy, his right hand man. The small diner you worked at? Connected to an underground meeting place for crime bosses and illegal play- kept down low on the radar and yet just outgoing and friendly enough to closet their criminal activity. Everything was in his hands. When he came around the diner- which was rare- yet now becoming more frequent- he would see you. A pretty new face working the clock. Of course you wouldn't recognize him, you saw plenty of faces every day working that place. Not to mention his work behind the scenes to keep himself just out of your view.
But, he always recognized you, mostly because he was specifically looking for you, but he supposed that didn't really matter. Most people greeted him with some sort of recognition and a shiver down their spine, but not you. It enticed him, the way you greeted him with a smile and pretty plump lips just waiting to be tainted by his sinful ones; being completely unaware of who he was and what he had planned. Naive. Malleable. For that reason, meeting you always felt somewhat wrong, that him even clouding the same air as you would leave you tarnished, but when had he ever been right?
He loved the feeling you gave him, and he planned to make you feel the same way. To crave him so desperately like he craved you. Billy wanted you to look at him and flutter those pretty lashes a couple times, then he’d sit back and watch those cheeks flush at his smile in a silent reply that his affections were returned.
All it took was promising Tommy a little extra cash to get your card information and your phone number. Too easy. The only thing he had to do was wait for you to fall into the trap he’d set for you. Except for the fact that it wasn’t “too easy”. You didn't use any of the money he gave you, and he had been so excited for that day.
The day he’d come in and see you with a new pair of earrings and a shining necklace. Or some nice heels for him to watch you walk to him in. Maybe even an entire getup just for him. That never happened, because you never used anything he gave you, you were pure, you’d gone untouched by the filthy craving for money and power, unlike him. It only made you all the more interesting. It was frustrating, but Billy had plenty of experience holding more than one trick up his sleeve. Luckily, he still had that phone number of yours. He’d get what he wanted one way or another, he always did.
It was finally the weekend. After working long hours in a restaurant with locals who ordered so much food yet couldn’t shut their mouths enough to eat any of it, it was great to have your days off come. Calm days for your own enjoyment. No stress, no problems, no chatty Karens who complained about this, that, and the other thing- no nothing. That was until you received a message on your phone that was more than suspicious.
“Hey doll, you buy yourself something nice and pretty with what I gave you?”
Of course, Billy knew you hadn’t, but toying with you was a given. He couldn’t just clue you in on everything already, it would be too easy for you, and considering you’d already made it hard on him, he decided that a little toying wouldn’t bother you too much. The message you sent him back was almost too good. You were only sweetening the pot. It seemed as if you’d meet him sooner than later. Things were going to plan.
“Do I know you? I believe you have the wrong number.”
“Not yet, sweet-cheeks. You could say that we’ve met. No doubt this is the right number, but you haven’t answered my question, have you doll?”
With what he gave you? And he said you didn’t know him. It’s an unknown number for fuck sake. But then it hit you. Buying nice things with with something from someone you didn’t know? Had to be the money in your account. But you had something up your sleeve too.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Playing coy was a killer. You were toying with him now. Maybe you were untainted, but you weren’t stupid. He liked it, but he needed you to spill. He wanted you to realize everything and lay it out in front of him. There was something oddly intimate about secrets being let out in the open. The anticipation was so thick it was palpable. If he was going to get it out of you, he’d have to give you something to grasp onto. Give you false hope.
“No? You don’t know about my gift ?”
You were smart, but he was filthy. He was raised with a silver tongue, and if he played his cards right, you’d fall right where he wanted you. Not to mention, you’d yet to address the elephant in the room.
When he sent that, your plan disappeared in thin air, because it actually WAS the unknown person giving you money. Gift? The money had to be it. It was warranted for no apparent reason, it made sense.
“The money has gone untouched. And why did you gift it to me in the first place? You said that I don’t know you.
There it was. He never actually said that he gave you money, and even though he was hinting at it, he needed you to say it. Let it be known, out in the open. Billy didn’t want any secrets between the two of you. Well, any secrets being kept from him. You, on the other hand, didn’t need to know everything just yet, and it didn’t make him feel so guilty, since you would know in do time.
“Yet. You don’t know me yet. But, we’ve met before. Remember that. I’ll see you soon, sweetcheeks.”
And that was the elephant in the room addressed. Yet. Although things had been addressed- partly- you were somehow more confused than before. Who were they? Why and how did they give you the money? How did they get your number? Who has that much money to just give away? In what way were you to respond? Were you supposed to respond? Apparently you’d met, but where? In what context? Had you spoken before this? And what did they mean by, “see you soon”?
You found out only two days later. Billy decided that after leaving you to your own devices for so long when he was transferring money, he deserved to see you then, and that he just didn’t want to wait any longer. It was a typical shitty Monday to start out the week, and you were on edge from the weekends events. But nothing during the weekend could have compared to face to face.
You knew he had come here before, but you never recognized him without a third or fourth look back at him. He asked for coffee, black, with some simple sugar packets on the side. When you brought his order to him, he spoke. “Get yourself something pretty yet, doll?” The cup shattered on the floor. There was no avoiding the connection in his words. You’d been on edge all weekend due to those texts, and here he was, saying something like that? No way it wasn’t him. You’d stood on stone legs for a few moments before bending down to assess and clean the mess you’d made before going to reply and being interrupted by his voice once again. “Tommy! Get this for her while I chat her up, will you?” And he did. You were surprised. But you sat in front of him anyway. “Not to come off as rude, but who are you to be making orders?”
There were only so many answers to this question. Two, in fact. The truth, or a lie. He could tell you it was family run, that he knew the guy personally, all lies. Or, he could tell you that he was basically treated as royalty in the underground illegal works of the mafia, and Tommy was his bitch. He needed to entice you, not scare you, but maybe a little bit of danger is what you needed- he always liked to be blunt anyway. “I have a lot of power around here sweetheart. I got a way of getting what I want.” Strange. Blunt. Who even was this guy? “Do you have a name?”
His grin was sinful. Intriguing, even. Did he have a name? Hell yeah, sweetheart. God if you didn’t make him shiver. A name that meant a lot to many. Whether it be negative, trailed by danger, or in the rare case- positive, he did indeed have a name. “Billy Hargrove, sweetheart. But it’s a bit late for introductions, seeing as how I know a lot about you already.” That’s right. He has your phone number, presumably your card number, and with all that he must have known your name. “Then fill me in. What is all of this? The money? The cryptic texts..?” He loved it. He was eating it up. You were curious about him and his game. Your words were giving him leverage without you even knowing. You wanted to know more and god was he willing to let you in, but he wanted to toy with you a little more first.
“Listen, (Y/N).-“ Oddly enough, heating your name from his lips sent shivers down your spine. “- I’ll make you a deal. You give me what I’ve asked for, and I’ll tell you all you want and serve it on a silver platter with your name on it. It’s all yours. But first, I want you to buy a pretty little get-up for me, and you’ll come with me to a nice party in it, alright? That’s all it takes. You just have to shake on it.”
He held out his hand for you to take in yours, which was accompanied by that same sinful smile. As you looked at him, as strange as it seemed, you felt a sense of power about him. Somehow as if he would have it everywhere he went. On the other hand, all you had to do was buy a dress and go to a party, and he’d tell you everything you wanted. Fair enough, right? “You’ll really tell me anything I ask?” He would be lying if he said that the hesitance in your voice and your doe eyes weren’t doing it for him right now. He shallowly nodded and let out a rough “mhm” from the back of his throat in response, with his eyes still on yours the entire time. He was dangerous. You weren’t stupid. But if he’s as enticing as he is cryptic and dangerous, you had to know more.
You reached out and took his hand; the warmth from his palm radiating onto yours, and as you shook it, you were sure that maybe everything wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Everything was really bad after all. You were nervous and overwhelmed. It didn’t matter...yet. You were going to go to that party, wear your dress, and own it too. Then you’d get your way afterwards and forget it ever happened. But things never went exactly according to plan, did they? Billy made sure to keep himself wedged into your mind every day leading up to the party. Whether it was a simple, ”Hey sweetheart, hope I'm on your mind.” or him updating you on how many days you had left to get your shit together, he made sure to keep himself at the forefront of your thoughts even without being physically with you.
Then came the text when the amount of days left hit one. You had one more day until you would see him again and get everything over with. He was a lion that got off on power, you knew that much. When you saw him, you swore you’d give him no leverage, nothing to grow from. But then he pulled up at your front door, walked out in the most lavish tuxedo you’d ever seen, and whispered in your ear that it was time to go. The ride to the party was silent.
He wanted to hear you speak to him and get lost in his eyes just as he’d found himself in yours, but he’d give you your time. After all, you needed all the help you could get for what was to come.

Enjoy! XD
“Okay... okay... play it cool. Don’t act weird. We got this right?” A question he posed to the lump, wriggling slightly against his chest, its little black wet nose poking at his neck. All he got in reply was a shrill whine and a languid lick.
“Good enough.” Nodding to himself, he tucked the furry lump more securely within the confines of his hoodie. With one hand under the puppy’s bum, Jon slung his guitar case onto his shoulder, setting off down the street towards the quaint little ice cream parlour that he had come to love. The ice cream was delicious but it was for more than that. Hell, even his family knew about it.
His uncle had been badgering him so hard for frequenting “enemy” territory. Well, more like teasingly niggling him endlessly about going over whenever he could just so he could catch a glimpse of that pretty ice cream lady.
“You’re not going to see the competition again are you?” Ned asked, flinging an arm around his nephew’s shoulder and pulling the smaller man into a snug side hug. His prominent brows wriggled cheekily at Jon. Those kind knowing eyes of his uncle, gleaming with mirth always reminded him so much of his mother, Lyanna, Ned’s baby sister. Under the scrutiny of their identical grey eyes, Jon always felt like a child. A boy who could keep no secrets from them. Their eyes saw right through him, always.
See, Jon’s Uncle Ned was the current owner of the local diner and the bed and breakfast above it. It was a family run business passed down from his parents. Besides providing warm meals for the people, the diner was also well known for its range of milkshakes, warm dessert classics like their bestselling rhubarb pie and of course ice cream. It was a place that travellers who were passing through town loved and a place the town folk grew up with. Including, a certain pretty ice cream lady.
Since Dany opened her shop, the two establishments had started a friendly rivalry to see who could attract the most customers by the end of her first year. The time was almost up. Ned had been in the lead due to the fact that he had his diner and bed and breakfast to account for, but now Dany seemed to be catching up. Which may or may not be thanks to him secretly recommending his customers to visit her if they ever wanted a more modern twist to their frozen desserts. Ned wasn’t one who particularly cared for winning. He only wanted his friend’s little girl, whom he watched grow from a spirited little thing with skinned knees and leaves in her hair into a smart, capable young woman to strive and some competition would do her good.
“When are you going to strike up a conversation with that girl, boy? Daenerys is not gonna wait forever!” Ned yelled out at Jon as he made his way to the door.
“I don’t know what you’re indicating at. I’m just going for a walk with Ghost, uncle.” Jon feigned ignorance, feeling rather flushed and discomfited. Was he really that obvious? Ned’s bellowing laughter followed him as the diner door shut behind him.
Daenerys. Dany, the other lady at the shop had called her.
She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Jon was sure she could have her pick of any man anywhere. Would she even want to bat an eye in his direction? A lady like her must be accustomed to all manner of pursuits from men. What if him going after her would be unwelcome? What if she found him too forward and he’d just chase her away? She might even be taken already! The thought had his heart clenching unpleasantly. For now, he was content with just admiring her from afar and dreaming of how their future interactions would go. Moreover, if he kept going, she was bound to take his order one day, right? That would be a start.
The second day he arrived at the town he had only heard his parents wistfully reminisce about through the stories they told him regarding his extended family, Jon went out exploring with his camera. Taking in the sights of this scenic little seaside town. His wandering lead him further and further into town. Sitting just at the edge of the town centre, at the junction of a street that seemed to lead into the more residential area was a cottage. Its cheerful exterior with its pale pink walls and white roof caught his eye. Curious, he decided to check it out. The closer he got, the noisy chatter of people and the smell of vanilla bean and waffle cones awoke his senses. The sign by the pathway under a fragrant lemon tree, leading up to the house read “Sweet Summer Chilled Ice Cream Parlour”.
Making his way up the front steps to the door, Jon snuck a glimpse inside from the porch windows. His eyes took in the matching pastel aesthetics of the interior decor, the numerous patrons lounging about, the freezers with the ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt on display before landing on a woman behind the counter talking to a patron. The sight of her forced a quiet ‘whoa...’ from his lips.
The woman had a head of silver curls that she wore in a fish tail braid, draped over her left shoulder. Her cheeks were tinged with the slightest hint of pink. As for her eyes, he couldn’t discern the colour from where he stood but they were large and doe like. The edges crinkled as she laughed at something her customer said. She was absolutely stunning and that smile of hers took his breath away.
The shop was fairly busy that afternoon and yet despite that, the woman bustled about serving her customers with the biggest, brightest smile on her face. The enjoyment and passion she had for her profession was captured in the twinkling of her eyes. Her never faltering grin was like the sun, so warm and radiant, infectious. Without knowing, his own lips had quirked up to smile along with her. It was that very instant, standing by the door watching her, Jon knew that he was lost. Completely and utterly besotted with this gorgeous stranger.
Upon his return to his uncle’s diner, he tried desperately to be subtle. Casually, as best as he could, he brought up the house at the end of the street to his younger cousin Arya. Thankfully, she did not disappoint. He found out that her name was Daenerys, she grew up in town but left for college. After graduating, she had a job in the big city for a while but decided to return home to open an ice cream parlour. The cottage it now resided in used to belong to her grandparents who left it to her before they passed.
Since then, he’d found himself being drawn to that fairy-tale-esque ice cream parlour, drawn to the lady inside. He didn’t know why but he knew he wanted to be around her. He wanted to learn how to draw out those lovely smiles of hers. He wanted to know what her favourite ice cream flavour was. He wanted to know every single detail that shaped the woman she was.
In theory, wanting something was easy but the process of achieving said goal, sometimes won’t go as smoothly as one would expect. The same goes for wanting to be in a relationship with someone. Jon was learning that now. His dating experience wasn’t much to brag about. His last girlfriend was an acquaintance of his best friend. After their first meeting, the two of them engaged in on and off hook ups and attempts at dating for three months until she broke it off when he hinted at the possibility of them becoming an exclusive couple. After that, Jon gradually shied away from relationships. His job kept him well occupied and he even picked up a new hobby of creating music. That was three years ago.
As each footfall took him closer to the cottage, under the warm pressure of his puppy curled up and dozing on his chest, his heart began to play a game of jump rope. Would she be just as pretty as she was three days ago? Oh, who was he kidding, of course she would be. Would she be wearing that beautiful smile today? Stepping up the steps like he had done so many tines this week, his stomach did a flip at the thought of seeing her again. Ghost began to stir from his nap, whining a little by the jostling of his owner’s steps. “Shhh....” Jon snuck a finger into the collar of his hoodie to scratch between his puppy’s ears.
Pushing the door open, the warmth of the interior and the now familiar scent of vanilla and waffle cones washed over him once more. This place really was lovely. The cosiness of the layout was a nice counterbalance to the slight chill of the house. The shop was quiet that day, with only two of the booths occupied. Scanning the shop with his heart in his throat, his eyes searched for that glimmer of silver that he longed to see.
There she was!
How odd the phenomenon of having a crush was? Just a simple glance could reduce a sane person into a star struck, fumbling, bumbling mess whose brain and body just refused to coordinate. All he could do was stand and stare with his mouth agape. It would appear that he underestimated the degree of his feelings for that woman before him.
That smile she had refilling an empty ice cream tub was like a bolt straight to his heart. A flurry of goose bumps scurried across his skin. What would it feel to kiss that smile of hers, he wondered? Would her lips taste sweet like strawberries and cream? What would it be like to tangle his fingers in those curls that swayed as she moved? How would it feel like to kiss her under the stars, to hold her in his arms? His hands craved to touch her pale skin, to glide over the curves he could see through the confines of her clothes. What would he have to do to make her tremble and call out his name? Perhaps a kiss to her pulse point? One that he longed to find. How would it feel to have her writhing under him, above him, to move within her warmth?
Good lord, snap out of it man!
Running a hand down his face with a groan, this was not the time nor the place for thoughts like that, he berated himself. Jon subtly slung his guitar case to the front of his pants. A little hot under his collar and it wasn’t because of his puppy’s body heat, unsteady steps took him to the freezer display in search of something to cool him down.
Key lime pie, raspberry jelly donut, blueberry cheesecake, peach cobbler....
What should he go for today? Out of the corner of his eye, he noted Dany and her friend whispering in quiet tones to one another. Dany’s cheeks were looking a bit flushed as she clutched her hand to her chest whereas her friend with her back to him was giggling so hard she was shaking.
Chocolate swirl, cookies and cream, black cherry chocolate chip, rum raisin, mint chocolate chip....
I suppose my default wouldn’t hurt, Jon thought with a shrug. Besides, he had more important matters to worry about. Reaching for the bell on the counter he gave it a tap.
Ding!
Shuffling a few steps back from the counter, he started to fidget, adjusting the strap of his guitar case to lie higher on his shoulder. Anxiety swirled to life in the pit of his stomach. Would Dany finally take his order today? If she did, what was he going to say? What was she going to say? Would she look at him strangely like the weirdo she must think he was coming to her shop so often, getting the same ice cream every time?
“Hello there again!”
His head shot up just in time to see her silver pony tail bob out of view as her petite figure hurry off to the back of the house. Jon’s heart dropped. It wasn’t Dany today.
Averting his eyes to face Dany’s co-worker, he gave her a timid wave. “Umm... hi again.”
From his brief interactions with the lady, he could tell that she had a charmingly friendly demeanour and a very pleasant smile. She looked like a person you could be comfortable around and confide your deepest secrets to without the fear of her leaking them out.
“You’ve been coming around a lot. You must really like ice cream huh?”
“Amongst other things....” Jon muttered quietly to himself. Tugging at his ear lobe, his eyes darted away from her. If only she knew. Although, that elusive smirk she wore and her teasing tone hinted that maybe she did. With that mildly mortifying thought in his mind now, a flush quickly spread like wildfire up his neck.
Missandei had her suspicions as to why this good-looking fellow came by so recurrently. His look of disappointment at seeing her and the futile glance full of longing over her shoulder just confirmed it. This man standing right there opposite her clearly had a crush on Dany! The poor guy had no idea that his feelings were very much reciprocated. She was really having the best time observing the reactions from these two lovebirds. Lovebirds who didn’t even know that all they needed to start something beautiful, was to just go for it. They were going to need some help and she was going to give it to them whether they liked it or not.
To start, she needed some information. Clearing her throat, Missandei asked: “So, what’s your name? It’s always good to know our customers and you’re already very much a regular here.”
“Oh. I’m Jon. Jon Snow.” Being the cordial gentleman that he was, he stuck out his right hand in greeting.
Taking his proffered hand in hers, she gave it a quick shake. “It’s nice to finally meet you, Jon, properly this time. I’m Missandei.”
Deciding that it was time to wake up, Ghost poked his furry head out of Jon’s collar. Pushing down on the zipper to free his head, a white ball of fluff emerged from the depths of Jon’s hoodie to address the humans outside with a huge yawn.
“Aww.... and who’s this?” Missandei cooed. Her heart melted into a puddle at the sight of the little puppy in Jon’s hoodie. Its white fur matched his owner’s last name perfectly. Inquisitive ruby red eyes blinked sluggishly as he roused himself fully from sleep to glance about at his surroundings.
Fondly, scratching the puppy under his chin, Jon said to her: “This is Ghost. As you can see he’s an albino pup. He was the smallest of his litter when I adopted him from the shelter. And... he likes to hide out in my clothing for some reason.” Ghost’s eyes narrowed into a squint at Jon’s pleasurable ministrations.
“He’s lovely.” Rubbing a tiny paw under her thumb, Missandei melted even further as Ghost’s mouth tried to gnaw at her. He was the cutest little thing.
Eventually, when Ghost gave up his attempt at chewing and settled for just licking her, Missandei shifted her attention back to Jon to ask him for his order. “Are you having the usual today? Or would you like to try out some new flavours?” Just then, an idea struck her. “Oh, and this puppy’s getting a treat too! On the house.”
“You don’t have to. Just a bowl of water will be fine for him please. I’ll umm... yeah. I’ll have my usual.”
“Nonsense! A puppy that cute deserve a treat! I insist.” Missandei implored, dismissing any possible protests of his.
“Well.... if you insist.”
“I absolutely do! Go wait outside at your table!” Missandei waved her hands at him to shoo him out playfully. “I won’t be a long with your order,” she added with a smile.
Jon watched her work for a moment before exiting the shop to take up his usual bench. Sighing, he lay his guitar case down on the table. Unzipping his hoodie, he lifted Ghost out and plopped him on the table too. Did bringing his puppy with him in hopes to attract the attentions of a girl? Sure. It worked, the girl just wasn’t Dany.
A man with babies or puppies always gets the ladies. That’s what his best friend had said.
Once again, he didn’t get to talk to the woman he went to see but he did make a new acquaintance and possibly a new ally.
“Well, that was something huh?” He asked his furry companion, stroking a finger gently through his snowy white fur.
Little did he know, Ghost the puppy would be the catalyst to his first conversation with the girl of his dreams.

New French Cafe Baker J Opens in Crimson Manila
While most of our local hotels are still closed for leisure staycations, a lot of them have been focusing more on their in-house restaurants and establishments which can still cater to the public. I have found myself frequenting hotel restaurants more often these days because you can be sure about their health standards and safety protocols. That’s why I made sure to check out this new cute French Cafe in Alabang which opened its doors just last weekend.
Baker J is a full-service restaurant which opened last June 19, 2021 at the ground floor lobby of Crimson Hotel Filinvest City. From its humble beginnings as just a virtual and online patisserie in 2020, Baker J has now opened its doors to diners who are longing for edible joie de vivre. I had not been to Crimson Hotel since the pandemic started, so it was nice to be back at our favorite staycation hotel in Alabang, even for just a cafe visit. Baker J is open daily from 6:00am to 9:00pm offering its guests a delightful French culinary experience. From morning coffee runs to French-inspired lunch and dinner with friends, Baker J is a cozy rendezvous spot at any time of the day.
At the helm of Baker J is Crimson Hotel Filinvest City’s French Executive Pastry Chef Nicolas Pasdeloup who makes sure that "life is full" with good food and good company. With stringent health and safety measures in place for both diners and staff, Crimson Hotel has made the place very inviting with their selection of artisan breads, pastries, gourmet tartines, and decadent cakes baked fresh daily. You can find these displayed at the counter right as you walk inside.
The interiors of Baker J are chic and cozy, which is suited for casual dates or small family get-togethers. We came in for an early dinner last weekend and there were a couple of families spending a lovely Sunday afternoon there.
You can choose to sit at the comfortable and relaxing sofas if you will just be having some drinks and light snacks. Baker J offers a variety of hot and cold beverages such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, espresso, latte, frappes, juices, summer drinks, and more.
Families and groups with lunch or dinner plans can stay at their semi-private area which offers a bigger space for all your orders and provides a cozy and enjoyable experience.
We started our early dinner with some refreshing beverages to cool us down. The Raspberry Vanilla (P220) is a great option with its frozen combination topped with generous amounts of whipped cream. Other Baker J Frappes to choose from are the dark chocolate chip frappe, sea salt frappe, and the matcha strawberry frappe.
I also tried their Baker J Detox line. The Moringa Reset (P170) is a healthy combination of moringa, ginger, cucumber, apple, and lemon.
A complimentary bread basket with butter was also provided on the table to whet our appetites before our main orders arrived. This is a welcome addition for any thirsty or hungry traveler.
Aside from their baked goods featuring classique and nouveau French offers, Baker J now also boasts of an extensive menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Inspired by the restaurant’s philosophy, the J in Baker J stands for “Je suis”, which means “I am” in French. Baker J starts the day with its breakfast dishes which are only available from 6:00am to 10:30am. These include delectable items such as eggs benedict, shakshouka, classic French toast, pancakes and waffles.
Fortunately, the Brussels Waffle (P250) is also included in their All-Day Breakfast Menu so we were able to order it that afternoon. The full-sized waffle comes topped with mangoes and apple puree plus whipped cream and raspberries on the side. I liked how the waffle was prepared, with its texture being soft but lightly crispy.
Baker J is reminiscent of casual and comfortable Parisian cafés — brimming with life and great food. Diners can come and relax while enjoying their food and each other’s company, catching up with loved ones and colleagues after more than a year of sheltering at home. And there’s nothing like a great meal to bring people together.
We also ordered their French Onion Soup (P300). This hearty bowl came with caramelized onion and gruyere cheese croutons, then served with artisanal bread. It was quite a heavy dish with all that bread inside the bowl.
My favorite item that afternoon was the Pan Seared Salmon Steak (P520) served with ratatouille. This was cooked magnificently with the very soft and tender salmon enveloped by a crispy outer crust. The fish was perfectly done with just some light salt and tomato sauce highlighting its natural flavors.
My husband ordered the Steak Au Poivre (P700) or pepper steak for himself. This main dish came with mashed potato and buttered French beans. He didn’t imagine that he would be eating steak for dinner inside a cafe, but Baker J offers this and a couple of other main dishes for those with a bigger appetite.
For desserts, just take a look at the display counters to find your favorite sweets and pastries. We asked for some Chocolate Eclairs and Macarons to cap off our French culinary adventure.
But we also made sure to bring some items back home to Manila. Aside from colorful pastries and homemade jams, Baker J also offers some charming souvenirs and knick knacks to brighten up your days. Surprise someone by bringing home a cute Baker J Teddy Bear (P550) or one of their cups and tumblers.
As a Welcome Treat, guests can get a 30% discount on their total bill when they dine at Baker J until June 30, 2021. Just show them a screenshot of this promo photo from The Hungry Kat of from their social media pages. For those who can’t go outside yet, don’t worry because you can order online via www.crimsonhotelfilinvestcity.com, or send them a DM, message, or call (0998) 595-3831 for pickup or delivery. You can also find Baker J on GrabFood, Foodpanda, and Pickaroo so you can still enjoy Baker J in the comfort of your own home or office.

Mad Love. Ch 7
Based on ‘Honest.’ by JoJo
*****
Having stared out the window for twenty minutes straight without interruption, Ally jumps and nearly falls to the floor at the sudden sound of knocking. She really hoped Lauren, who surprisingly had left before Ally woke up, hadn’t forgotten something. It’s not that she’s afraid she’d cry at the sight of her, it’s that she knows she wouldn’t. All she feels is empty and cold inside.
“Ally, it’s Mani. I got your text. Can I come in?” Ally’s feet drag as she walks to the door to let Normani in, making a very transparent attempt at a smile. The smile quickly becomes genuine once Normani declares “Lauren’s such a dumbass,” to which Ally responds, “I know.”
Normani barely gets a foot in the door before Ally suggests they leave the apartment to go do something fun. So, that’s what they do.
“Mani, that movie was life changing!” Ally has not stopped raving about Wonder Woman since they stepped out of the theater…two hours ago. They had gotten a bite to eat afterwards and Ally told every single person at the diner how amazingly talented Gal Gadot is.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you had fun,” Normani jokes. Ally shoves her playfully. “As a matter of fact, I did! Seriously, Mani, thank you. I had a great time today.” They hug and before Normani can fully pull away, Ally places a soft kiss on her lips.
“As much as I want this to happen, I think it’s a little too soon,” Normani admits shyly. “You’re right, I’m sorry,” Ally says, no longer able to meet Normani’s gaze.
“It’s alright. I’ve just had feelings for you for a long time, and I want to make sure you’re serious about this.”
“I know, Mani, and I think it’s going to take a while to figure everything out, but for now, I need this. I need you.”
“Then, I’m here.”
They spent the rest of the night as if it were any other. The only difference was that as they talked, there was more frequent touching and gentle kissing. Their dynamic was always effortless, and a little romance was not about to change that. Both of them were completely content with the subtle changes in their relationship. They felt comfortable, not boring.
*****
Lauren planned on getting a hotel room. Truly, she did, but then she realized it would be easier, less expensive, and honestly more enjoyable to just sleep around with people and stay the night. So, that’s what she does. It’s been three days since Ally kicked her out and the second time she’s slept over at the place of this girl she met at the coffee shop. Lucy’s her name. The first night she’d gone to Camila’s, and boy was that a mistake. The sex was nice, but then Camila would make pillow talk about herself and try to get Lauren to help advance her nonexistent singing career and Lauren’s nerves couldn’t take it.
To be clear, Lauren has only slept with Lucy once—yesterday, and that’s because today’s Christmas Eve and Lucy went to celebrate with her family. Since they met less than a day ago, she figured Lauren shouldn’t come to meet everyone. She also didn’t want to kick Lauren out on Christmas Eve with nowhere to go, so here Lauren is, sitting in Lucy’s apartment alone watching Hallmark Christmas movies.
As sad as it sounds, Lauren likes it this way. Things with Ally always seemed so intense, so meaningful. It scared Lauren. She feels better keeping things meaningless. Really, who could blame her for not wanting the pressure of such a commitment?
However, after the third movie with the same predictable ending, Lauren starts feeling pathetic and lonely. She decides to hit up Dinah and see what she’s up to. They agree to meet at Ivy’s, though when they arrive, it’s definitely not what they expected.
The place is oddly tame, filled with boring people sipping spiked eggnog. There’s a fireplace Lauren has never noticed lit and couples are cuddled up by it. Where the fuck is the gross, freaky Ivy’s Lauren knows and loves? She was literally here a few days ago, God!
“Well, this is different,” Dinah observes, “but I like it. It’s cozy.” Lauren hasn’t been paying attention, and not because she’s trying to be rude. It’s because she spots two people she never thought would be at Ivy’s today, two people she wouldn’t have minded never seeing again. Normani and Ally.
Dinah notices Lauren tense up and follows her line of sight. “Do you know them?” Lauren doesn’t even hear the question. She’s watching Ally talk and gesture enthusiastically while Normani looks on intently. Normani rests a hand on top of Ally’s and they smile. If Lauren didn’t know better, she’d think they were dating. At that very moment, to Lauren’s horror, Ally pulls Normani close and kisses her.
Lauren shakes her head, thinking indignantly, “She moved on fast.” As if the universe wants to give Lauren a reality check, her phone starts buzzing. Three texts—one from Camila, one from Lucy, and one from Dinah. Dinah!?
“I thought that would get your attention,” Dinah teases, “Now are you going to tell me who they are?”
“Later. I just really want to get out of here,” Lauren pleads. Dinah sees the anxiety in Lauren’s eyes and suggests they ditch the creepy alternative universe Ivy’s for takeout at her place.
*****
“Do you always celebrate Christmas Eve this glamorously?” Dinah smiles, motioning to Lauren who’s curled up next to her on the couch in blankets.
Lauren clears her throat. “Not exactly. My family would typically get together and stuff our faces with the best Cuban food,” she pauses, “but since this is the first Christmas without my dad, no one was in the right spirits.”
Dinah nods sympathetically and reaches out, but Lauren moves away, hating herself for revealing something so personal to someone who’s practically a stranger.
“Wow, I did not mean to bring the mood down like that,” Lauren laughs weakly. Dinah’s about to say something, but Lauren shakes her head. Ally’s tried to have this conversation with her for six months to no avail, so Dinah doesn’t really stand a chance.
“Oh hey,” Dinah exclaims, motioning to the clock, “it’s officially Christmas!” Lauren chuckles at Dinah’s childlike excitement and is caught by surprise when Dinah suddenly kisses her. “Merry Christmas, Lauren.”
Lauren’s taken aback by how amazing that kiss makes her feel. Her mind goes blank and for a second she finds some holiday cheer within her. She moves back to her original spot on the couch, letting out a sigh of contentment. “Merry Christmas, Dinah.”

In France, walking is a pleasure.
I find it strange to say that, because walking is something we do everyday to get us from Point A to Point B.  Yet I find it is a an act of pleasure when I give in to the act as a mediation in motion that offers my senses a bit of enjoyment around every corner that surprises me.  It is as if walking give me a more intimate knowledge of the city I am in, and Paris woos me, in more ways than one.
If you will allow it, Paris will entice you on a culinary journey… and like two lovers trying to maintain a long distance relationship, I can’t help but yearn for the memory of a good meal!
Allow me to share with you the fantasy I had the chance to indulge in!
La Poule au Pot
La Poule au Pot
I was seduced by the first sip of the house aperitif, a cherry liquor that was so nice I order a second because it pleased me.  I tried my first Foie Gras here and was pleasantly surprised by the deconstructed salted jellied tomato, which reminded me of Bruschetta, to give it a nice balanced experience.  It was difficult to chose a dish and in the end I decided on the chicken with the sauce, because Henry IV popularized eating a chicken every Sunday.  The chicken was succulent and amazing, and I enjoyed my dinner.  My traveling companion enjoyedthe Poule au Pot, prepared in the way Henry IV preferred it.   The apple pie was a slight disappointment, but not through any fault of its own-I am rather obsessive about my sugar.  As much as I like to try an apple dish in every country I visit, the French version, while well done, is too plain for my taste.  I should have gone with the Creme Brulee or the ice cream, but I was curious.  Sometimes it works for you and sometimes it doesn’t.
Absolutely recommend for an authentic French bistro experience for couples, small families, and late diners.
La Coupole
Meeting with friends new and old, La Coupole provides an ideal spot to catch up over a nice meal while taking in the Art Deco that adorns the pillars and the dome.  If you have a moment, take a look at the list of celebrities that frequented this restaurant.  Some of the comments are quiet amusing!
Having a nice meal with friends at this charming place in #Montparnasse! I don't think you can find a bad meal in this neighborhood. Loved the service and the atmosphere. A couple of times they lit a cake on fire. But what is this next to us? Oh wow! Must try this seafood platter next time! #lacoupole #traveldiaries #findyoursmile #foodislife #parisfood #tasty #parisadventures

Le Bar a Huitres
Walking around we checked out other potential places we could enjoy.  I don’t think you can find a bad meal in Montparnasse.  There was a Korean place and several Breton creperies in the area, but this inviting display beckoned to us.  The problem was I had never had a raw oyster before.  Don’t worry, my curiosity eventually won me over and we found ourselves sitting down for another memorable meal.  I didn’t want to order a platter of oysters before knowing if I would like them.  So I made a strange request for a single oyster.  The place boast of having the largest variety of raw oysters to be found in Paris, and they have four restaurants in Paris, but I found this overwhelming to decide on one.  Do you decide by looking at how pretty the shell is? Or where the oyster came from?  I put my trust in the Maitre d’ and a beautiful oyster with a milky consistency of pudding was presented.  My only regret is that I ordered this at the end of meal to try it… and I really should have dove in head first with a full platter!  This meal leaves a sweet lingering in my heart and I know I will look forward to visiting again in the future!
Another first, ceviche also frightened me but as the starter it did a beautiful job opening my mind up to other possibilities!
I love mussels but this surprised me at being so delicate in texture and in taste!
This creme brulee was set a blazed. It was perfect in every way and leaves me with fond memories of a beautiful meal!
Our wandering ways brought us to the Les Baux in the Latin Quarter for tapas and a couple drinks.  One of my favorite portions were the raw beef strips lightly seared with sesame and eaten with soy sauce.  The place had a nice authentic vibe to it for the modern crowd.  If you are looking for a nice neighborhood to stay, there was a nice looking Young & Happy Hostel across the way.  I am told Rue Mouffetard is another great neighborhood to visit if you want to experience a street market!
Best Part of this Trip:
While exploring the 13th in search of an early breakfast on Sunday morning, we came across the Le Circus not far from the Place d’Italie.  It was a stop initially out of necessity, but I loved it so much I came back the last morning I was in Paris to have the honor of the last croissant of the day.  The atmosphere had a classic vibe in a more relaxed neighborhood, but the croissant and the pain au chocolat were mouth watering morsels of perfection.  I savored every bite and I profess it now carries a special place in my heart.  Hoping to take home a few to share with the family, I made a short study of the area and was unable to determine where these were coming from.  Alas, fate has decided that it must be my own personal little secret to keep.
Food, like walking, is as boring or exciting as we make it.  However we choose to mark the way we spend our day, I hope you find something that delights your palate.  It might be something new or maybe an old favorite revisited.  Whether you prefer a simple delight or an extravagant sensation for the senses, your experience becomes an expression of life and Paris offers to indulge your desires.
And now I have a desire to share a few simple and a very fine treat with you!
