Marlon (my agent 8)stuff, because why not

Out of my main agents, I feel like I don’t talk about Marlon nearly as much as I should, so, here’s her background and everything else

Marlon (Last name unknown). 21 years old. She/her

- 5’9ft

- A common foot soldier in the Octarian military. Was sent on a scouting mission when she encountered agent 3 (Tilly) and fell into the Deepsea metro.

- Doesn’t remember much from her past, but still retains mentality and muscle memory. Unconsciously remains tense and laser focused oftentimes. Took awhile to shake the mentality of “there’s hundreds of foot soldiers, one loss doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things.”

- Her bond with Tilly is undoubtedly her most important relationship. She loves Adrian (agent 4) so dearly, but it’s something between her and Tilly that can’t be replicated. It’s a tender understanding and influence that Marlon has trouble expressing.

- Doesn’t see much combat in the NSS anymore. Mainly works as the Squidbeak Splatoon’s resident medic

• patched up Tilly’s sprained tentacle in Alterna which led to major flirting and maybe some smooching

- Doesn’t really care for gender norms. Named herself Marlon after watching the Splatoon equivalent of Marlon Brando films after surfacing

- Level-headed but emotionally withdrawn. Her time in the Metro become an unspoken event between her and Tilly, mostly because Tilly doesn’t wanna upset her

• she’s working on it, though!

- is remarkably strong. Could crush a watermelon with her arms

- no sense of fashion whatsoever. Wears exclusively professional attire or else she’ll wear a trenchcoat and Hawaiian shirt with wrangler jeans outside

- Works with Sheldon at AmmunoKnights

- Her literal dream job btw

- Lives with Tilly and Adrian (agent 4). Used to live with Off the Hook and consistently visits. She owes her life to them

- Is protective of her friends and caretakers, and sees them as the first (and last) remnants of family she can’t afford to lose

- unnaturally perceptive with a strong sense of right or wrong

- Has chronic pain from the constant explosions in the metro. It’s sometimes debilitating, so she stays in bed stiff and feeling as if she’s being ripped apart. Tilly and Adrian is always there with a heating pack and some comfort food

- Initiated the relationship between Tilly and Adrian because these two are so painful with their emotions I mean it’s so obvious it almost hurts

- hates pictures for some reason

- Doesn’t do Turf War or ranked a lot because of the connotation with the metro. If she did, her anarchy status would be A+

- Has a motherly relationship with Neo Agent 3 (Ian) and is very close with him

- Plays the piano really well

- Drinks socially. Is a very rambunctious drunk. Once joined a crusty seanwich sponsored eating contest and almost died. Adrian has photography evidence

- Has plenty of propane tanks laying around

😈Macey my beloved Macer Machine Maceroni n cheese. My agent 4 my little squid. I have so much random shit to say about you

They’re from a small town a few hours from inkopolis, and came to the city when they were fourteen to go to a high level boarding school focused on the arts… (they’re a writer)

They have a very rosy view of the world. Everything they see is poetic to them in some way. They loved octo canyon as soon as they got there (giant sky, breezy, lots of history, what tf is this giant teakettle sticking out of the ground, is that a humongous rock-carved octopus coming out of the ground, etc)

As an extension of this, they happened upon Marie in the square because they were too nervous to start doing turf wars and just kept procrastinating all over the place… the sun caught Marie’s parasol perfectly; they saw her and thought “WOWOW oh my squod (squid god). Is no one seeing this beautiful mysterious woman”

They get overwhelmed easily: for this reason they had a bit of trouble getting into ink battles at first. splatfests are either a blast or a nightmare depending on how much energy they have, and, more importantly, learning to fight the octarians was a struggle and they failed against octavio the first time—almost fatally

Even at a new school with kids who are similarly artistic, they never clicked easily with a group of friends… even so, they value alone time a lot so they’re never totally bothered

A list of people they are presently (age 19) 100% comfortable around, in no particular order: Marie, Callie, dj octavio, Flow and craymond, Len (agent 8)

The pursuit of quiet, less populated places in the middle of a city is kind of hard to find, thus they hang out at octo canyon a lot.

After a loooong time of pestering the snowglobed dj octavio and hearing about his cool mysterious past from Callie and Marie, they eventually got him to crack and talk to them… (and with some help/preliminary knowledge from Callie, they even got him to teach them octarian)

Marie + Macey + Callie splatoon Agent 2, 4 and 1’s Bully Octavio business. the Number One business for Bullying DJ Octavio. (they all love dunking on him, but he’s most likely to actually give in to Callie and Macey)

They Are So freaking bad at ink battling I’m so sorry to all their teammates in the past. Rip they are the worst team player and the sorest loser most of the time, but when they do come out to play some turf, they main blob for the lolz

They love salmon run!!!!! After about a year of living in inkopolis they were Very often on the grind at grizzco (pays the bills cod damn) and

they are absolutely horrified when they get to alterna and learn the. Ahem. details of the situation. from everyone else (they will be grizzco-ing anyway)

Also has worked part time for Flow at Headspace during school breaks

Fucking huge off the hook fan… possibly exploded when the octo expansion crew first met with the new squidbeak via mr grandpa cuttlefish

Now lives with Len (agent 8) in a shared apartment.. they are both big man diehards

They act very differently depending on who theyre with… you’re lucky to hear them speak at all if you’re not part of the new/new new squidbeak (or agent 8)

They’re organized as hell but they love being surrounded by things… they’re a clutter lover

Their hair is untamable and they enjoy it bc it makes them feel a little like a wild animal

I want to actually like. Make the refs for these guys but idk when I’ll actually get around to that so until then I might as well introduce them bc if I don’t I’ll forget to.

Anyway, here are my agent interpretations! They’re a work in progress bc I feel they’re a little samey but when I write more about em they’ll get nice and fleshed out. Info below the cut bc of length

Brooke (they/she) is agent 3. Big fan of HTE and the Squid Sisters. Former leader of the Sister Misters, a turf war team with her friends, now the leader of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Initially a wide-eyed idealist, they welcomed the role of Agent 3 with open (if slightly confused) arms, excited to be a hero. Their work came easy for them and they didn’t get how serious it was… or, well, was gonna get.

With the help of the other Agents, Cap’n and some newfound friends, Brooke recovered. They, too, got into music, producing their own under the title DJ Sango. This became their main coping mechanism. They regained their livelihood and confidence, and realized they weren’t alone.

As of 3, Brooke is the new Captain. They’re a little miffed about it as they were hoping to have some time to reconnect with old friends, but if it means any new agents don’t have to deal with Craig it’s all good (they made up, but she still thinks he can be a little crazy…) They are more positive like they were before 2, but now they’re more experienced, reserved and stoic, becoming much “cooler” after seeing so damn much. Been there, done that, threw a party so wild people still haven’t turned back up. Captain Brookestone- as they have been dubbed - has vowed to guide any new recruits with a little more poise, being a big sister-like figure to 4 and the new 3. She’s good friends with Iris, too.

And as for that goal of reconnecting with old friends, well, she may have the chance after all…

Juniper (she/he/they) is Agent 4. They’re very quick-paced, carefree and determined. Their schedule is pumped full of sports, clubs, and agentwork! Sometimes they feel a little pushed around as the youngest member of the Splatoon, but they’re the one who saved Callie, so hey, it’s not like they’re the weakest link. He’s a little brash and gets defensive easily. He’s also very into his job at Grizzco, and distrusts Salmonids.

She lived with her older sister for a while before moving into an apartment with 8 when they came to the surface. Also, said older sister is one of Brooke’s old friends, and while the agents have to be very hush-hush about their work, Juniper wants to reintroduce the two someday soon.

Iris (she/they) chose her name for herself, but also still goes by 8. She ended up recovering many memories, but her memory of many things pre-Kamabo is fuzzy, only becoming clearer with time. They’re a little awkward as they try to find their place in life, but they’re generally optimistic about it all. Iris is on the shy side, and is soft spoken. She is also very knowledgeable, organized and philosophical, enjoying opportunities to flex those brain muscles. What many don’t realize is she is rather militaristic from her time in the Octarian Army, sharing the determination of the most elite soldiers. She gets fired up if anyone or anything gets in the way of her goals, and is a total BEAST on the battlefield.

A teammate, roommate, and friend to Juniper, the two get along well. The one thing they disagree on, though, is the topic of Grizzco. One is one of their best workers, the other is staunchly anti-salmon running.

The three are very friendly with each other and have grown to trust each other over the years. Whatever life has in store for them next, they’ll try their best to brace it all together.

So. I've Cracked The Code On The Appearance Changes in Side Order.

Wall of photos and such incoming.

After a lot of testing, I've discovered there are 7 different little lights and doodads that are added to Agent 8 via upgrading certain chips, each with a basic 1st tier and and upgraded 2nd tier. The 1st tier of upgrades appear after picking up two of the same chips in that changes pool (ex: 2 Homing Shots chips), with the 2nd tier appearing after picking up five of them (ex: 5 Homing Shot chips). There is no further visual indicators added for maxing chips that go beyond 5, such as Splash Damage or Rush Attack.

Full disclaimer: This is the result of researching a LOT of my own runs, so I can say this is true with about 95% certainty. If I labeled an ability chip in the wrong visual pool, please let me know!

Let's start with the basics - our control group. No Teal upgrades provide any visible changes to Agent 8 (or Pearl-bot for that matter), so I ran an all-teal palette to demonstrate.

First is likely one of the more requested visual changes - the Headset. The 1st tier sports a basic metallic earpiece, with the 2nd adding an antenna and eyepiece that match your primary ink color.

Maxing Splash Damage, Sound Wave Damage, Splash Radius, Special Charge Up, Turf Lucky Chain, Rush Knockback, and Homing Shots all provide the headset!

Next up is Ink Bubbles. The 1st tier shows transparent, slower bubbles flowing in 8's ink tank, with the bubbles being faster and more opaque in the 2nd tier.

Nabbing Poison Ink, Splat Ink Recovery, Ink Saver Sub, Ink Recovery Rate, Sticky Ink, and Explosion Knockback all provide Ink Bubbles.

Following that is the Fins. The 1st tier shows the base shackles being added to 8's boots, with the fins themselves being added for the 2nd tier.

Picking up Run Speed, Swim Speed, Rush Attack, Mobile Ink Recovery, Mobile Special Charge, and Mobile Drone Gauge all provide the Fins.

Now, moving on to the weapon upgrades!

First we have the Muzzle Lights, which appear at the muzzle of most weapons, and the sides of the brush and roller nearest the base. The 1st tier shows a circle and squares circling around the muzzle, with the 2nd tier being more exaggerated, with alternating squares and rectangles forming a hexagon pattern in the center.

These are exclusive to the Ink Damage, Main Damage (Close), and Main Damage (Distant) chips.

Next up is likely the most common visual one can see on their run - the Arrows. The 1st tier shows a circle with three arrows pointing down the weapon, with the 2nd tier adding some blowback markers behind the circle.

These are on a whopping TEN upgrades, being Splatling Barrage, Main Firing Speed, Horizontal Slash Speed, Main Range, Main Piercing, Main Ink Coverage, Rush Ink Coverage, Quick Charge, Shot Spread Reduction, and Ink Saver Main.

Last of the weapon upgrades are the Dots. The 1st tier is 3 large dots and a circle spinning at the bottom of your weapon or around your wrist, with the 2nd tier adding another circle around the dots.

These can be found on the Hindrance Damage, Ink Attack Size, Charge Storage, Moving Ink Speed, Extra Dodge Roll, Brella Cooldown, and Knockback upgrades.

And finally, my favorite little knick-knack, the Shrimp Hook. This little guy appears on your ink tank after picking up 2 matching Luck upgrades (ex: Lucky Bomb Drop, Canned Special Drop, etc), and begins to glow after picking up 5. However, the glowing effect is not visible in the post-game screen. 😔 (I would totally buy one of these if someone made one, btw)

By the way, 7 visual upgrades * 5 chips needed to max each visual is 35 chips, which is just shy of the 36 total chips you can have on one palette, which means, in theory, you could. Have every maxed visual indicator on in one run.
