Hello vocal synth tumblr :-D!

I have been thinking on a few ideas for vocal synth series, but I feel I could really benefit from collaborators! In the past I've made my videos solo, but I feel like it will be an even better work if I have like-minded people involved!

I myself own Kevin synth v as well as a bunch of lite voicebanks, and I also use open utau, I've made videos and songs before as well, this is the best work I have currently posted to YouTube : https://youtu.be/k3ThmNmgJus! I have some stuff I consider more advanced that is not public yet, but you can message me and I can show you! I also have a lot of art on my tumblr u can find under the tag #labratart. I'll probably be doing a bit of everything if this project gets off the ground, focusing most on the drawing and the music! If there's anyone experienced in editing that would be fantastic, as that's the place I'm most lacking.

With that out of the way, my musical storytelling ideas are

a series of songs about a world where there are stereotypical "red strings" and while in the world there is no confirmed reason, society and culture see it as a thing linking soulmates. Each song would show a pair of people in worse and worse circumstances, with the first song being more lighthearted and having a happy ending, while the last song will lean into the horror elements. Having a different person at the head of each video and song will be a boon here, as then they can all have a distinctly different vibe! I have a lot of ideas about this, but I won't go further into them unless people are interested because I want the other people involved to also have creative control!

A few songs about a girl from some kinda cyberpunkish future, who somehow travels to an alternate universe that is more high fantasy, because her life goal is to. kill a dragon. I know this is a rather silly premise, but it came from having musical ideas of two really contrasting styles, and wanting to translate that into a story somehow! I have a lot of admiration for bands like The Mechanisms and wanted something with a similar vibe while still being different. Even if the starting idea is a little over the top I feel like with other people part of it it will come out really fun!

ok so imagine the stupidest internet drama imaginable but in a world where there's demons and angels. This started with me attempting practice wordbuilding, and growing attached to an idea of demons and angels ( basically theyre people born with a purpose, and that purpose is either good. or bad. its very distanced from catholic ideas except for aesthetics), and specifically finding the idea of what their internet would be like funny and interesting. I'm not sure exactly how this would translate to a song series but a lot of it seems really fun to me, so with others input I think something really cool could come out of it!

I have a lot of ideas and passion, as you can probably tell if you read this far, and I hope some people are interested! I know this is a lot of rambling, but I really want to try to find people as passionate as I am! Even thouugh I've put forth many ideas here, I'm still really flexible right now, what's important to me is making something worthwhile! One of my most favorite things about a lot of songs made about/inspired by Fresh is the amount of synths used. Synthesizers are electronic instruments that have their own unique sort of sounds, and they’re very different from the more traditional instruments. They’re still instruments, of course, but they’re a very different type; they’re synthetic. Artificial.

Fresh isn’t a skeleton. He’s a parasite that pilots skeletons. He pretends to be things he’s not. He’s very different from others, like how synths are very different from traditional instruments. Some might even say that he’s not a real person, like how some may say synths aren’t real instruments, but synths still make sound and are used in music, and Fresh is still a living being with his own thoughts and desires.

It’s also specific types of synths that I associate with Fresh. Like synths that have more treble (deeper, more bass-y synths remind me more of Error), which I can’t really explain why exactly it reminds of Fresh more than just any kind of synth, other than it’s what I’ve heard in a lot of Fresh songs, and that it’s kinda what I associate with how I imagine his voice is like, and it Just Makes Sense™️.

It’s also usually upbeat, fast-paced songs with those synths that I associate with Fresh the most (and it makes me very happy seeing fanmade Fresh songs have those sorts of elements to them), because he’s a very Upbeat and fun type of character, but there’s also similar music that sort of portrays his more serious and scary sides; his truer sides. Fast-paced music that sounds more intense, and makes me picture fight scenes, or scenes where Fresh is chasing down his next host <3

I’m learning about the Radical Face family tree project cinematic universe (if any of you will get that joke).

Among information about the story I also learned Ben Cooper Is gay, explains why I relate so strongly to his more personal songs. Although I probably should’ve guessed that just by the lyric “Well you can save your breath, I know, we’re not the kind you’ll pray for.” Few other ways to interpret them lol.

When it comes to the story I think I’d like to marry that one lady from Midnight who has lived in the woods half her life and can apparently just suck all the cancer out of your veins. I always knew Pound of Flesh and Ghost Towns were connected good to get confirmation on that. And also I don’t know how I was supposed to know Severus and Stone were the names of the brothers! To think the only characters named within the words of the album’s themselves flew right over my head.

Anyways that’s my rambling done.

The Wicked Truth by Melissa Foster

The Wickeds: Dark Knights at Bayside #4

Another great story from a fabulous author – loved Madigan and Tobias and was rooting for them from beginning to end!

What I liked:

* Madigan “Mads” Wicked: musical storyteller, greeting card line businesswoman, puppeteer, MC Princess, has four protective brothers, guarded in some ways but so open in others, really liked her

* Tobias Riggs: ex-con, mechanic, ex-MMA fighter, broody, quiet, introspective, has lost much, loves his grandfather, alpha with a heart of gold

* That neither main character said they were in the market for a relationship…then watching the romance unfold

* The slow unveiling of the past events that have created the more guarded personalities of Tobias and Madigan

* The love of family that is so predominant throughout the story – even when family sometimes hurts

* The steamy bits – fanning myself a bit

* That I could see the main characters together and hoped everything would work out for them

* That it is standalone readable though there are a lot of characters from previous books that I have not read

* The HEA ending and wondering who will find their HEA next

What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

* Thinking about how devastating some events can be even when the cause was unintentional

Did I enjoy this book? Yes

Would I read more by this author? Definitely

Ya know, one thing I think is really cool about Epic: The Musical is that it kinda returns The Odyssey back to its roots. Let me explain that.

So The Odyssey was originally a sung poem passed orally between singers called rhapsodes for generations before it was written down. It is this written version of essentially a really long song that would eventually become the text that we know of called The Odyssey. The Odyssey that we know is just one version of a larger piece of musical communal storytelling.

These days when people interact with The Odyssey it’s usually as a book (that’s probably not even read aloud) instead of as a musical performance. Aka most people who have read The Odyssey have never heard The Odyssey.

It’s also more static. The Odyssey is the “true” version, everything else is an adaptation at best. It’s no longer considered a communal story in which anyone can be an author.

Then Epic comes along. Like any adaptation it does contribute to as close as we can get to that original communal storytelling, but also, by being a musical, it does what only musical adaptations of The Odyssey can do. It makes The Odyssey a musical performance again, the way it originally was thousands of years ago.

And I just think that’s neat.

My Analysis on The Duel

Over the course of my stay in the MTL fandom I've seen several takes on what The Duel means so I wanted to throw my interpretation!

For the record, I used the isolated guitar tracks of Toki and Skwisgaar that user crystalsmeth made for this. Here is Toki's version and here is Skwisgaar's version of The Duel, so feel free to listen to them while you read this. Or you can also listen to the regular version Spotify with your headphones or something.

As we know, Toki walks into the auditions late and begs Dethklok, Skwisgaar specifically, for a chance to prove himself. Skwisgaar accepts and immediately starts playing, leading to the legendary battle.

From the beginning of the song until 0:12, Skwisgaar is the one playing. He's doing the call and he's reckless, unafraid to destroy Toki the way he destroyed every other auditioner.

As such, an afraid but determined Toki answers from 0:13 to 0:20. The rest of Dethklok are shocked, since no one else before him was able to hold against Skwisgaar for even a verse.

While they're metaphorically transported into the sky and turned into mythical beasts, the call and answer dynamic continues. Though their verses are much shorter than the beginning.

Side detail: Toki's verses here are a bit clumsy and improvised, reflecting of his nervousness.

However, around 0:25, a change occurs. When Skwisgaar plays his part, he doesn't stop to listen to Toki's response. On the contrary, he continues playing, and thus creating an harmony with him.

Visually, this is the moment where the tension starts building up, both of them wanting to overcome the other though Toki is visibly behind Skwisgaar.

Toki catches up at 0:38 and they face each other. The call and answer dynamic resumes briefly and intensely as they shoot beams at one another.

While spinning so fast that you can barely tell them apart, the harmony once again returns (0:51). The whirlwind of pink representing Skwisgaar and teal representing Toki only grows bigger, and they're entangled with each other.

There's a sudden cut at 0:55, and in comes the baroque segment. They're still harmonizing but the musical style has changed and so have their clothes and attitudes. They have unimpressed, smug faces, akin to the aristocracy of the time.

But then, around 1:10, their expressions change, indicating the end of this relatively low-pressure part of the exchange. Their fighting is about to resume.

It's 1:15 and they're playing together. But here's the key. It's not call and answer, it's not a harmony they're both fighting off either. It's lead and rhythm guitar. But it's not Skwisgaar playing the lead.

It's Toki.

That's right, go ahead and listen to the isolated tracks I linked at the beginning of the post. For a brief moment, Toki is playing the lead guitar while Skwisgaar takes care of the rhythm guitar. And guess, what? They're happy about it!

As they soar into the skies, they're smiling at each other. Yes, it's faint but you can see it. Both Skwisgaar and Toki joyfully staring at each other, while playing together. Skwisgaar, who minutes ago was defeating auditioners left and right. Skwisgaar, who said they didn't need another guitarist in the band. Skwisgaar who didn't think anybody could match him, less alone conquer him.

That Skwisgaar, relegated to playing the rhythm guitar to this boy he just met and actually enjoying it. I tend to believe this is the moment where he decided he wanted Toki in the band, and by this point on he was just playing for the fun of it, rather than to defeat Toki.

From 1:23 onwards, they're harmonizing though there's something different about it this time, and this is better appreciated with earphones, by the way!

So far, we've had Skwisgaar's guitar come from the right channel, and Toki's guitar come from the left channel. But here, their guitars come together, right in the middle. You can try it with your earphones, if you take off the right or left one during this part, you can still listen to the harmony perfectly, whereas before where you would effectively mute Toki or Skwisgaar's guitar depending on which one you took off.

While Skwisgaar and Toki play in the beautiful skies, surveilled by their animal spirits, their music has fused into one. They have become a single entity.

The call and answer dynamic returns at 1:40 and so do the guitars to their respective channels. The conclusion to this fight is near and the visuals mirror it too, as they turn night-like.

While Toki technically loses the battle, he doesn't lose the challenge, as he's accepted into Dethklok because of his playing and that was the whole point of the auditions.

So, here you have it, my lengthy analysis on The Duel. I haven't really seen people talk about the fact that Skwisgaar, even for a few seconds, allowed Toki to play lead. And it's a fact that drives me insane! I mean, we're talking about Skwisgaar, the guy that truly believes himself to be better than anyone...It really goes to that he respects Toki's playing more than he'll ever admit. Musical soulmates, man...
