The Prado Museum rescues more than 400 audiovisual archives, including a documentary in which a very young king Felipe VI stars. 27 years ago at the age of 22 King Felipe was asked to do a small documentary on the famous painting ‘Las Meninas which depicts the main chamber in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid and presents several figures of the court.
"There is in our history of art a man who exercised the profession of painter and for almost 40 years worked for the court of King Philip IV. He was a profound scholar of light who throughout his life managed to dominate it, making visible the air that separated him from the people he portrayed” the young prince begins.
"His passage through this world varied the concept of painting as an artistic, unique and unquestionable manifestation. After his splendid work, words such as clarity, penumbra, shadow, pain, transparency, atmosphere, composition or portrait came to have a different meaning”
The recovery of this documentary comes thanks to a project developed by the Prado Museum as part of the celebration of its bicentennial and in collaboration with the Spanish Film Library and RTVE. The art gallery has opened the trunk of audiovisual memories and has found an important cast of celebrities who have contemplated all the paintings hanging on its wall.
Welcome to Felipe’s Art history class!!

Nicolás Francés (1400-1468) - Altarpiece of the Lives of the Virgin and Saint Francis (1445 - 1460). Oil, Tempera on panel. Dimension: Height: 557 cm; Width: 558 cm. Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. Spain
This altarpiece consists of nine large panels plus the eighteen that make up the predella. The main scene is The Virgin with the Christ Child surrounded by Angel Musicians, which is completed with five scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin in the right and central areas, and three scenes from the life of Saint Francis, in the left area. All of them are framed with gothic ogee tracery. Stylistically, the panels correspond to the so-called International Gothic, which combines the Italian taste for narrative clarity with the northern attraction to naturalist details. The conception of this altarpiece is in keeping with the interest in representing reality that began in the Gothic era. It was painted for a chapel near the town of La Bañeza in León.
