For twelve years, every day I wake up in the battlefield, my first thought is of you. Knowing you are there gives me the courage to open my eyes. Forever after, it will still be the same every day.

Hello! Is it possible to get a couple of romantic headcanons with Shan Yu?
Tumblr media
Romantic HCs with Shan Yu
Warnings: Mentions of fighting, reader getting hurt, death, insecurities, scars,
Request
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• Very protective of you. Must be within his line of sight, or with one of his elites anytime he thinks danger may be near. He trusts you to hold your own in any situation, but the idea of you getting hurt scares him far to much to trust you fully.
•Not big on PDA, but is always sitting as close to you as possible, and has his hand in your's, on your back, hip, waist, or shoulder anytime you two are together.
•Whenever the two of you aren't dealing with a mission, or worrying about troops, take you out on a romantic hike and picnic.
•Training with you is important to him, not because he worries (Maybe a little, who wouldn't, you both are fighting in all sorts of battles and hunting all the time) but because he simply enjoys doing it with you. With his men he's stern, quick to correct, and harsh. With you, he's playful and teasing, often times it'll go from training to him chasing you after knocking him down, or smacking him in unessicary places a few to many times.
•When alone, he's very verbal about his love for you and will often try to steal several kisses when he's pulled away to work.
•Hates seeing you get hurt. Anyone dumb enough to cause you harm, physically or mentally, won't live long enough to see the next sunrise.
•When he's hurt or sick, he will sometimes pretend as if he doesn't need or want your care, other times he's needy as Hell. Often tries to pull you into the bed with him
•Prefers being the big spoon, and takes advantage of any opportunity to lay on your thighs, stomach, or chest. If you're plus size, pray, that man an't getting off anytime soon, he's far to comfy
•If you're insecure about any part of your body, he's offended that such cruel thoughts make you feel that way. Promptly kisses, caresses and compliments those areas
•Loves it when you kiss and caress his scars
•Loves seeing you steal his clothes, and will purposefully leave out some of his coats or shirts, especially when its cold, knowing you'll steal them and that he will be blessed with the sight of you wearing them.
•His life outside of home is very hectic, violent and loud, so he Cherishes every second of the moments he gets with you that are calm and quiet.
•Will sometimes try cooking for you, not always successful, it's always edible but sometimes not the tastiest for you or him. It's the thought that counts.
•You get to take care of his hawk. You both treat the bird as if it where your child, rather than a pet for hunting. Because of your close relationship with Shan Yu, his hawk trusts you enough to let you hold him, isn't a big fan of touch.
•He often takes you out for a ride on your horses, or you ride his with him.
Author's note- this is probably very messy, this week has left me tired by the time I get home, I'm really only in a mindset to be making preferences and not headcannons or any other fic. I'll re-write that info on my request page because this was on me, I wrote it in a way that was confusing lol.
I have recently watched Mulan: Rise of a Warrior (2009), the Chinese movie about the ballad of Hua Mulan. It was a good a movie, I had a nice time watching it (even if I have my issues with parts of it) but what fascinated was how the final tragedy unfolded.
For a moment I really believed Mulan was going to die, and maybe even lose militarily, or at the very least her love interest was the one who was going to die. None of them did. They won the war, defeated the evil warlord and survived. And yet their end felt deeply tragic. At first I wondered why.
Mulan goes home to live with her father. She has no life, her childhood friend is dead, she has been fighting for 12 years. No one and nothing waits for her besides an aging sick father that probably won't live long and a life of domesticity for which she doesn't seem really eager (when she was a child her father said in her presence that he had failed raising her because she went beyond this domesticity to protect her friend). Her love interest becomes the heir of the emperor and marries for the good of the people. They both decide to part way after having spend years together, to live the role they were supposed to have at birth (that the war took away from them but which did not make them happy to begin with).
It is a sad ending, but not the saddest possible. So why did it nag me so?
And then I realized that the ending of Mulan: Rise of a Warrior asked the exact parallel question of Electra's ending by Jean Giraudoux.
In Giraudoux's Electra, the play ends after Oreste has killed his mother and uncle and this murder, in addition to avenging his father's murder, leads to the fall and sack of the city of Argos by Corinth. This is how a character resumes the situation:
"How do we call it? When the sun rises, like it does today, and everything is ruined, everything is wrecked, and yet the air has become breathable, and we have lost everything, the city burns, innocents kill each other, but the guilty people are dying in a corner of this very rising sun?"
(Translation mine)
In a way seeing our two main leads in Mulan so wretchedly unhappy at the end of this movie, after having done everything for their country and making sure everyone can live in peace and harmony, asks the exact opposite question:
"How do we call it? When the sun rises, like it does today, and everything is in order, everything is fixed, and yet air has become unbreathable, and we have gained everything, the city stands, innocent are safe, but the heroes are dying in a corner of this very rising sun?"
The answer to this question is given by the choir/god-like figure of the play in Electra. He says:
"It has a very beautiful name, […], it is called dawn."
(Translation mine)
You can read this line a myriad of ways of course. Personally I have always read it two ways. First it represents the mundanity of it all. How is it called when the sun rises? It is dawn. The fact that the guilties are agonizing, that innocents are punished too is mundane, not a thing really worth commenting on. The other meaning is tied to what dawn is. Dawn is the beginning of a new day, the symbolization of a new beginning. This great waste, this great moment of truth is a new beginning.
I have always made the synthesis of the two significations in my head: that all new beginnings, all great moment of truth, are born of colossal waste, always. That it is this connexion between the two that is as mundane as the sun rise being called dawn.
The ending of Mulan: Rise of a Warrior fits this perfectly. This new beginning for the collective is born of a colossal personal waste (while in Electra the colossal waste is public and the new beginning is personal).
From that I gather that you cannot get some worthwhile change without someone getting massively hurt in the process (someone who did not really deserve to be hurt like this). In this way the two stories answer each other.
That is why this ending keeps nagging. It looks at me asking "was it worth it?" and the answer is both yes and no.
I was tagged by @wintercrushes to list my top nine movies, so here we go.
In no particular order:
Tumblr media
As a little girl, I found Mulan deeply empowering on a fundamental level. Almost every movie I saw had a man at the center of it, or as the protector, while women were generally either rewards for their bravery and/or damsels in distress. Mulan was brave, strong, adorably awkward, and willing to risk everything for her family. Seeing a woman be incredible like that, even if she had to impersonate a man, made me feel like I could be too. Also I was awkward as well, and it was nice to feel like that wouldn't stop me from being a hero if I wanted to be. I credit Mulan and Captain Janeway for making me feel that being a woman was a beautiful thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Road to El Dorado was also a meaningful movie for me as a child, but that was related, I believe, to my bisexual identity. Miguel and Tulio were originally meant to be a couple, and I found their relationship deeply compelling, far more than most straight relationships. I was also completely in love with Chel. Dem curves. Plus it was just fun, with amusing dialogue and excellent music. It remains one of my absolute favorite movies.
Tumblr media
Another movie I watched as a child which I believe I found compelling because of my queer identity. Though I didn't realize it at the time, I think on a deep level I understood all the queer subtext in Interview With The Vampire, and, though it was darker and sadder than I tended to enjoy, I was fascinated by and in love with Louis and Lestat's relationship. I haven't seen it in many years, though, and I would very much like to watch it again.
Tumblr media
While I don't know how objectively good of a movie Independence Day is, it's one of my favorites that my dad and I watched all the time when I was a kid, and every 4th of July we put it on. We can quote the whole thing. I think I'll always have a soft spot for it.
Tumblr media
Did the novel deserve better? Absolutely. This adaptation didn't do it justice at all. Regardless, World War Z remains one of my favorite movies, and is definitely my favorite zombie movie. Regrettably, I can't explain why, I just know that every time I watch it I enjoy myself greatly.
Tumblr media
I think that Cabin in the Woods is absolutely excellent. Hilarious, surreal, an excellent parody, and entirely unique, this movie is a delight for me from beginning to end.
Tumblr media
While this movie, as with the whole series, did not do Gene Roddenberry's vision for Star Trek justice, being far more about action and war, instead of a thoughtful commentary on social issues delivered through a vehicle of exploration of space and attempts to understand and connect with other cultures, it's still a delight to me. I adore the relationship between Spock and Kirk. In truth I find all the characters interesting and enjoyable to watch, though I didn't care at all for the relationship between Spock and Uhura. But I find most straight relationships to be a bit of a turn off and always have, so I don't think my opinion is necessarily rational here.
Tumblr media
This list would not be complete without Ever After, my favorite of the very few straight romance movies that I actually enjoy. Drew Barrymore's Danielle is an emotionally strong bookworm whom I absolutely adore, and Henry, despite his flaws, draws me as well. I love them together. Why that is, exactly, is not something I can fully explain. But I do.
Tumblr media
I think that The Lion King 2 is vastly underrated. Getting to see Simba as King, and all the ways his childhood trauma impacted his behavior, was fascinating. I also adored Kiara, and, as I am a sucker for redemption arcs, ESPECIALLY those that stem from overcoming poor parenting, watching Kovu shake off his mother's toxic influence, and become the kind lion that he is on the inside, was deeply meaningful for me, as I was facing the same challenges. And there was something very sweet about the two of them finding themselves in each other.
I realize that a lot of these are movies that were influential to me as a child, and I think that's likely because I much prefer television shows over movies as an adult. I like the long form nature of them, and getting to see people change in a gradual way that feels more realistic and requires fewer montages, fun though those may be (looking at you, "I'll Make A Man Out Of You") is much more appealing to me.
I'll tag @heretherebedork @absolutebl @sastiel-daily and @infinitysgrace
I'm amazed by that one single white dude in the 2009 Mulan film who's an ukrainian singer and apparently famous enough to get the celebrity treatment at the end of the opening credits???? I've never heard of him and the role is so useless I cannot imagine anything else that deserves this treatment than a celebrity hire????
DVD Review Update 5/27: Mulan Rise Of A Warrior First Look
DVD Review Update 5/27: Mulan Rise Of A Warrior First Look
So since I put together a plan to pit the live action Mulans against one another, half of that review has finally arrived. Mulan: Rise Of A Warrior. The Chinese made Mulan from 2009… SPOILERS? 2009, 2019, odds are those wacky Chinese were ethnically cleansing their lands of a certain Muslim Minority when both movies were being made. Maybe I’m wrong but… ok ok. Nuff said. Sigh. Stop being a…
Fandom Problem #4765:
If I had a nickle for every time a Chinese film was accused of Sinophobia for having one or two European/American characters I'd have three nickles. Which isn't a lot but its weird it happened three times (Mulan 2009, Flowers of War-which got extra hate for having *oh the horror!* an interracial couple!-and Great Wall.)
