HGSN Riddle Game: ❴Horrifying Mountain Village❵ Kubitachi Village Was Too Crazy ....

This is a translation of the riddle game that was recently released as part of the promotion for the vol. 3 release. The story does not feature any of the main characters or connect to the main story at all, but it does have a tiny little lore teaser at the end, so I decided to translate it.

Solving all the riddles gets you a desktop wallpaper or mobile wallpaper depending on your browser type. The riddles should be relatively easy if you know some Japanese, and there are hints, so give it a try if you can.

This translation will spoil all the riddle answers so don't read it if you want to try the riddles yourself!!

I'm a fledgling Youtuber.

Although I'm aiming to become a paranormal/occult Youtuber with over 1 million subscribers, right now my subscriber count is only around 70.

For my next video, I want to make something that will really blow up.

Thinking that, I idly scrolled through an occult aggregator site, when I found an eerie place name.

"Kubitachi"

There's definitely something there - well, maybe.

For now, why don't I check it out? ... To Kubitachi it is.

There are 4 riddles on the homepage. For each riddle, click the black 解答 button to enter the answers

壱 (One)

Once I pass through this forest, I'll arrive at Kubitachi.

The overgrown trees blocked out the light of the sun, and even though it was daytime, the surroundings were terribly dim.

Expecting to encounter something along the way, I kept the camera running as I proceeded through the forest.

Then, from behind me, the faint sound of a hoarse voice reached my ears.

"Nounuki-sama..."

When I turned around, countless characters were floating in the air.

Riddle 1: "Nounuki-sama..."

Answer: ナニカ (SOMETHING)

I dashed out of the forest, stumbling on the way.

What the hell was that...!?

There was definitely SOMETHING of an unknown nature in that forest.

Though I was breathing heavily, I checked my camera.

But the video showed only footage of a perfectly ordinary forest.

弐 (Two)

I arrived at Kubitachi.

Although the streets were deserted, as I got closer to the heart of the settlement, the number of people I passed increased.

There was a woman staring straight at me.

When I tried to start a conversation with her, with an unexpected candor, she started telling me about the rumours in Kubitachi.

The bizzare death of an elderly woman.

The mountain you must never enter.

The hair youkai that appears in the bath.

And more. It was truly quite varied.

Riddle 2: "What do you feel?"

Answer: シセン (GAZE)

When I tried to ask for more details on the mountain, her face suddenly became stern and she warned me never to go there. It wouldn't be good to ask any further.

Thanking her, I left and looked up the mountain near Kubitachi on the internet.

Apparently, there's been no end to the number of disappearances on that mountain going way back, according to what I found.

In other words, as an occult Youtuber, it's a place I have no choice but to go to.

Suddenly, I felt a piercing GAZE and raised my head to look around, but there was nobody there.

参 (Three)

I kept out of sight and snuck towards the mountain.

With the camera on, I followed the path uphill.

The sound of the frogs was loud.

Besides occasionally passing by what looked like a hokora from time to time, I went forwards without seeing anything unusual.

Riddle 3: Mountain Maze

Answer: 空 (EMPTY)

I reached the mountaintop without running into anything at all.

There's no mysterious presence or anything. It's completely EMPTY.

Almost as if "something" had already completely disappeared from this place.

What a let-down.

The color of the sky is tinged with red.

It's almost sundown. Better get back down the mountain soon and head to the inn.

肆 (Four)

Reaching the inn, first things first was to take a bath and wash off all the sweat from hiking.

When I immersed myself in the hot water, all my thoughts and my tiredness quickly melted away.

The moment I tried to get out of the water, I saw black lines reflected on the water's surface.

Before my eyes, the lines gathered and created some kind of shape.

As if I was paralyzed, I could only move my eyes as my sight was drawn towards it.

Those black lines were hair.

Riddle 4: GNILIEC SI REWSNA EHT

Answer: テンジョウ (CEILING)

As soon as I blinked, there was no longer anything there. When I looked up at the CEILING in a panic, I thought I caught a glimpse of hair disappearing in the corner of my eye.

Suddenly, the rumour that I had heard today about the hair youkai in the bath crossed my mind.

I must have just been seeing things due to all those stories I heard.

Trying to convince myself of this, I decided to go to bed.

After solving all 4 riddles, head to back to the homepage to find the last riddle at the bottom

From the pitch black darkness, a light slowly spread out.

I heard the hoarse voice from that forest say:

"Nounuki-sama..."

What on earth is this...?

Riddle ?????: IT'S STILL HERE. FIRST START SEARCHING.

Answer: だるまづか (DARUMAZUKA)

Breathing heavily, I jumped out of bed.

A dream. One like a nightmare.

But the characters "DARUMAZUKA" were burned into the back of my eyes.

There's no question that "something" exists in Kubitachi.

Forget the video, I don't want to be involved any longer.

I'm done filming. I'll head home immediately in the morning.

The next morning, I flew out of the inn and onto the road home.

Although I took a lot of footage, none of it shows anything definitive.

This won't make for a good video.

I couldn't stop thinking about it so I looked up "DARUMAZUKA".

"Darumazuka* Tunnel" - a haunted site in Kibougayama, the town neighboring Kubitachi.

I don't know why, but I'm seized with the feeling that I have to go there.

I can't shake the notion that I'm being called to that place.

Even though I already went through such horrifying things...

A few days later, I decided I would go to Darumazuka Tunnel.

This is the old demo for the original Wolf Quest game, which came out in 2007. It lets you play the first Quest on the first map, Amethyst Mountain. You have to learn how to hunt, then find a mate. You can then run around with your mate continuing to hunt and leveling up.

The new game will not be using the same "Level" based style of gaming but will instead be an actual open world game where you can do any quest on any map and the game will transition much more smoothly between the stages of life rather than continuing the old fashioned idea of levels being tied to goals being tied to maps.

The old game is definitely still fun to play on its own, and especially with the free demo there's no reason not to try it lol.

They also have the old game available for mobile, but I'm not sure where to find the demo for that, you might just have to check your phone/tablet's app store?

Wolf Quest Anniversary Edition, the overhauled brand new modern version of the game does not have a free trial, because the maps are more than twice as big as in the old game, so even just Amethyst Mountain all by itself is a game in and of itself. It only costs $20 though, and you can see lots of gameplay videos on youtube if you want to see what it looks like before you buy it.

And when you buy Wolf Quest AE, you also get the full version of the old game included for free, which means you get to go to the Slough Creek and Lost River maps. In Slough Creek you get to raise pups until the middle of summer when the game ends, because that's where the "Level" ended.

SHITTY ARKNIGHTS REVIEW, 4 AND SOME CHAPTERS IN

tldr: surprisingly good and fair gacha game with really fucking good writing. if you need convincing to play it, look up the soundtrack. if you still don't want to, watch the anime? I've heard it's good but haven't watched it.

so! arknights! a mobile tower defense X visual novel gacha game with a whole dollop of anime (albeit none of the shitty tropes)! nearly the exact antithesis of what I'd like in literally every way!

and yet, i fucking adore this game! what's up with that?

ultimately, it's still a mobile (by default) gacha game, but it's... really refreshing! there's still the good ol pulling for characters and not getting em, wanting a character but they're limited to an event that happened a month ago, et cetera - but ultimately I'm willing to brush that off because it circumvents the bad stuff as much as a for profit gacha game really can, and is ultimately really good to free to play or (in my case) very light spenders that I'm decently happy brushing it off and recommending it as long as you don't have self control issues. it's a mobile game, but given it's a tower defense game it plays very well with mouse and keyboard, and that's how I play it pretty much all the time.

the writing has been top notch and i particularly really like how it doesn't fall into the trap that a lot of other games like these do of being... kinda creepy or just having otherwise annoying writing, such as jokes repeated too long. the main story is pretty much a semi-dystopia with a miracle element that gives you magic, but at steep costs, and all the consequences that has; however, given the way the game is structured, events and side stories let the game really show its chops with from what I've seen really interesting and varied settings - currently, my favorite so far, a port town with odd fish monsters at war with an inquisition, common people, and an Atlantis-ass fish people race with future technology; all of them hate eachother. the art accompanying these is amazing and realistically I will probably end up with an arknights wallpaper at some point. the soundtrack is fucking amazing, with the main highlight for me being the character soundtracks - every "top shelf" character has their own song and they're all amazingly varied and often really wonderful. of note, look up Mountain, Lee, & Ling's! Also, Operation Pyrite. That song got me into this game.

the character designs are... actually unique? in a gacha game? which is weird to say, but this game has really fucking varied and pretty much all cool characters. Mudrock, Mountain, SilverAsh, Lumen, Surtr, Pramanix, Hoshiguma, Mr. Nothing, the Abyssal Hunter quattro, the list goes on. It's refreshing to have a game with (while not perfect) at least somewhat varied body types and ones that aren't exclusively buff dudes and half naked women, or in Genshin's case "there are five body types (literally), have fun with that". also, it's worth noting, the denizens of this game's universe just kinda have kemonomimi ears. that's their thing.

and finally, gameplay. i'm... honestly really impressed it's not bullshit? for a tower defense game, a genre that is REALLY EASY TO POWERCREEP, the game just straight up gives you "hey, for a decent difficulty, here's where you should be." and follows up on that by actually giving you the resources to be at the point where you're generally perfectly levelled - it's strategic, but not unfair. to that end, there's dudes on YouTube making videos with pretty bad characters with half the level they should be clearing house with pretty hard content. It also lets you use characters from other people for pretty much no penalty if you're having a particularly hard time, which is really cool. You know it's a good tower defense when a tiny firefighter can kick any enemy into bottomless pits.

ultimately, I'm... really happy with the time I've spent on it. It's got its gacha game quirks, but I'd say I'm pretty resistant to bullshit game design and while it's still a gacha game I'm willing to not hate it for it, so that's praise enough from me. it's done enough with the really fucking good story, amazing soundtrack that I actively listen to outside of the game, and really good art that I'm comfortable with spending a bit of dough on the game (and, realistically, I'm probably gonna get a hoodie or something when i have the dough). Play it! It's really good.

d'aww you're too sweet, thank you so much!!! ٩(●꒦ິ꒳꒦ີ●)۶〜♡ i honestly don't really have a set way of making them?? i just usually grab a whole bunch of screencaps from btr eps and fix their layout mostly from the ground up *nervously side-eyes the mountains of random asf pngs clogging up my downloads folders 👀* on paint tool sai and canva that i'm totally not ehem "borrowing" from my sister's premium college acct then i slap on a whole bunch of filters in some mobile photo apps like snow until the horribleness is somewhat disguised, and hit post and hope it looks decent and i'm not just delirious from sleep-deprivation. i really wish i have a better way of explaining it, but i'm absolutely no expert at this and my photo editing process for the past five years of being a chronic tumblr lurker has just been a cycle of fumking around and finding out. so sorry for the nonsense rambling but i super appreciate you a million! 💗

I may do one more normal reply roundup after this, but then they will become shorter, more sporadic, and less thorough - just whatever catches my eye that I have something to say about, rather than systemically trawling the notes of every post since the last one

the reblob queue is still full up until mid-november, but when that runs out I will also be changing how that gets filled - organizational tags will stay but commentary will be less frequent, and I’ll just refill as I go instead of big days of concentrated effort which means you may get the same artist multiple days and it may just run out sometimes if no one’s posted in a while

I will be stopping the patreon requests and wallpapers after fulfillment for november signups - that means there will be patreon requests and a wallpaper that go up in december, but none after that. I may or may not sub in a $5 postcard tier at that time, for a little print in the mail of whichever drawing was my favorite that month, but that’s still a maybe. other than that the patreon will become more of a tip jar, if you just like tucking a little extra spending money in my pocket so I can order better food sometimes :v I’m pretty sure the favorites posts every couple months should continue though.
