Honourable Mention

Ithan at last responded, eyes wide and pained. Because he's Danika's father.
I swear that everything in this book is tied to Danika!

So, as someone who does not have any French or Canadian heritage, what exactly is Cartouche? I haven't heard of it before, but it seems like there's a show and books and stuff, is it fairly popular among french-speaking communities? You've made me curious lol
Ngl i went "nyehehehehehe" out loud when i found out i was being given an excuse to ramble about the thing :D
The short answer is it's a french cartoon from the early 2000s! One season-long, with 26 episodes! And yeah in 2010 they eventually made little books that are based on some eps, and they are very cute! They all have unique artwork because instead of using screenshots from the show they hired an artist to illustrate everything.
Most of the show is sort-of lost media, by which i mean that there are only 5 episodes still available in the original french audio… BUT an arabic dub exists, so I've been going through that with a translation app for funsies in my free time! So to answer your question, no, it's not a well-known show, but to me it's a nostalgic one asfdkg
More rambling about the thing under the cut!
What it's about:
Think Robin Hood in the early 1700s, but in Paris! Specifically, it takes place 2-3 years after Louis XIV's death : the future king is a tiny 7yo kid, and since he can't reign yet, the old king's nephew, Philippe II d'Orléans, is regent. In real life, the regency lasted 8 years, and Philippe d'Orléans is generally now considered by historians to have been An Okay Guy Who Did His Best, but every show needs a villain, so here he's the Prince John to Cartouche's Robin Hood! So the bulk of the show is Cartouche and his lil group of buddies helping out poor people and fighting for justice.
I was always fond of the show, but ngl part of the fun in recent months has been reading up on the time period; it's a unique but very short transition era between two very long reigns, and a lot of stuff actually happened during it! The show has a fun amount of references to real people and events here and there. Makes reading all those History books feel like the Pepe Silvia meme, really
Who are these characters:
Tumblr media
Our main character is this dude! Cartouche is your brave hero archetype, but also a bit of a smartass with a penchant for shenanigans. And he's named after a real-life criminal! The actual Cartouche was notably Not Nice, but a lot of people at the time did cheer him on because, well, he stole from and attacked rich people. There are actual books and movies about him that did generally keep the bandit-with-a-heart-of-gold legend alive! Cartoon!Cartouche is even designed after one of the movie versions, where he was played by actor Jean-Paul Belmondo. He's got the same outfit and everything, it's cute :D
Real!Cartouche had his own group of allies called the Cartouchiens, and some of the characters from the show are named after them! The main ones are…
Tumblr media
Louis du Châtelet, aka le Lorrain, he's a noble who decided to join the good guys! He's a fancy dude, and notably he used to be a massive jerk, but he got better!
Tumblr media
Fleur d'Épine and Galichon! Galichon was sentenced to the galleys and escaped! He's the team dad… and is also Fleur d'Épine's actual adoptive dad. Fleur d'Épine is the youngest of the group and has a whole backstory the show takes time to uncover: she was found by Galichon when she was just a baby! She gets a bunch of episodes about her mysterious family situation...
Tumblr media
Freluquet, who is, let's be real, the token kid they added for the show. But he's generally a fun little dude, and very importantly he often relays messages from...
Tumblr media
Isabelle d'Entraigues, Philippe d'Orléans's niece! She's not named after a real person, but after a character in the Belmondo Cartouche movie. She's a fave, she's got a temper! She's a spy from the good guys.
And then we have our main villains!
Tumblr media
Philippe d'Orléans, the Regent. He's cruel and power-hungry and not above trying to get rid of the young king. But of course, he's not going to get his hands dirty. (The real guy is super interesting! I've been reading up on him a lot!) He has two people doing work for him:
Tumblr media
Demachault, the police lieutenant, who is named after a real guy and is doing his best but honestly just sucks at this job, poor guy.
Tumblr media
Nero Falconi, who is the Regent's right-hand man. He's the competent one here, but unlike our other villains he's not a noble!! His sad backstory ties with le Lorrain's, but instead of acting angsty about it, he's just seething with rage at all times. I Just Think He's Neat <3 He's the one main character who isn't named after a real person or a movie character!
There are other characters, but these are the main ones! It's a cute show! The references and links to real events are fun to spot, the setting is neat :D
Also Falconi's sad backstory lives in my brain rent-free, despite the flashback being only 60 seconds long. I can't justify that one, it's not that deep, it's just been occupying space in my brain for almost 20 years for some reason

CC3 Spoilers Below. Read at your own risk.
This is a bit of a brain dump so apologies if my thoughts aren’t organized.
In CC3, we’re given a HUGE information dump by Silene, the daughter of Theia and one thing that stood out to me was that the Asteri corrupted the Cauldron.
It really started to make me think about the question that has come up a few times in ACOTAR: “What if the Cauldron was wrong?” in regards to the mate bond, especially the one between Elain and Lucien. We have seen several scenes where they are almost… Turned-off by each other. Yet when we see Azriel and Elain, it’s electric. Why did they attach themselves to each other so easily?
In CC, we hear about the Asteri commanding certain characters to breed: Celestina with Ephraim, Sabine with Mordoc, etc etc in order to create the most powerful offspring. In ACOTAR we hear that the cauldron only chooses mates that will create powerful offspring, not necessarily who’s compatible on a deeper level (as we heard from Rhysand regarding his parents). But in CC it feels more random, like how it’s supposed to be in ACOTAR.
Hmm. So what if the cauldron was wrong indeed?

Whilst re-reading, I made a note of things that Danika hid from her best friend
Friends with Tertian
Met with briggs twice before arresting him
Selling synth
Stealing the horn
Ruhn asking her to tell Bryce he was sorry
Tracking down people for Redner
Tattooing Bryce with the horn (major fucking deal)
Emailing Sofie Renast
Being a bloodhound
Mordoc is her father
Baxian is her mate
Project Thurr and Dusk’s Truth (which she shared with Baxian)
Looking into shifter lineage
It’s hard to look at Bryce and Danika’s friendship and feel that it was genuine when most of it was built upon lies 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ruhn watched her beautiful, perfect face. Watched as determination set her features.
No matter how much he tried to hate her, he was completely smitten.
He wants to so badly go after his girl...
The world seemed to hold its breath as the elegant doe walked up to Ruhn and gently, lovingly, nuzzled his neck. Ruhn didn’t so much as move. Not a blink as Lidia pulled away, those golden eyes lingering on his face—just a moment longer. Then she bounded off into the trees, a streak of sunlight that was there and gone. Like she’d never been.
Ruhn scanned the forest where Lidia had vanished, his hand rising to his neck. The skin there was warm, as if her touch still lingered. “Right,” Athalar grunted, stooping to reach for Ruhn’s legs. “On three.” Baxian tightened his grip under Ruhn’s shoulders. Wings stirred, and Ruhn stirred with them. “Lidia,” he croaked. But Athalar and Baxian jumped into the skies, both males groaning in agony, the world tilting—and then they were airborne, Athalar holding Ruhn’s legs, Baxian at his shoulders. Ruhn hung like a sack of potatoes. His stomach flipped at the dizzying drop to the arid ground far below. The mountain rising before them. The glittering blue sea stretching beyond. Behind them, shooting among the olive trees like a bolt of lightning, raced that beautiful, near-white doe. A hind. To reach the sea, she’d have to ascend through the hilly groves, and then right up the rocky mountain itself. Was there a way down on the other side? She’d only mentioned an aerial landing when she’d spoken to Dec. Not a sea rescue. Or a land rescue. Lidia wasn’t coming. The realization clanged through Ruhn like a death knell. “Oh fuck,” Athalar spat, and Ruhn followed the direction of the angel’s gaze behind them. A pack of two dozen dreadwolves streamed like ants through the forest. All headed straight for that deer. A wolf larger than the others led the pack—Mordoc. Closing in fast on Lidia as the hills slowed her. “Stop,” Ruhn rasped. “We have to go back.” “No,” Athalar said coldly, his grip tightening on Ruhn’s legs. Which was faster—a deer or a wolf? If they caught up to her, it’d be over. Lidia had known that, and gone anyway. “Put me down,” Ruhn snarled, but the malakim held him firm, so hard his bones ached. The wolves narrowed the distance, as if the hills were nothing to them. But Athalar and Baxian had caught an air current and were soaring swiftly enough now that Lidia rapidly shrank in the distance— “PUT ME DOWN!” Ruhn roared, or tried to. His voice, hoarse from screaming, could barely rise above a whisper. “Aerial legion from the east,” Baxian announced to Hunt. Ruhn looked up, following Athalar’s line of sight. Sure enough, like a cloud of locusts, soldiers surged for them. “Fuckers,” Athalar hissed, wings beating faster. Baxian kept pace as they swooped toward the sea. Farther from Lidia, who now neared the top of the towering mountain. That was the last Ruhn saw of her as they soared over the arid peak. Open ocean spread before them. Ruhn twisted, trying to keep an eye on Lidia.

does anyone die?
Under the cut.
The villains, pretty much all of them. The Asteri, the Autumn King and the King of Avallen, Pollux, Mordoc, to name a few. The Viper Queen is the only more antagonistic one who doesn't.
Closer to all protagonists, the Fendyr Heir (who gets named Sigrid because she does not remember her own name) gets killed in a duel, and she comes back wrong as a Reaper.
Bryce dies in the end taking out the Asteri but it doesn't stick. Jesiba trades her immortality for a long Vanir life for Bryce, so of the heroes and allies, only Jesiba dies.

just got to the part in my hosab re-read where daybright (lidia *sobs*) tries to get ruhn to wake up when the reapers have him and he's all 'i know you. i know your voice and your scent' and i just. i CANNOT take it. i can't.
Listen...
When I was reading back through every interaction they had in HOSAB for my fic, this is what really killed me:
"Anyway, we made the intel drop-off. Nearly got caught, but we did it."
She straightened slightly. "By whom?"
"Mordoc. The Hind. The Harpy."
She stilled. Her fire guttered to that violet blue. "They are lethal. If you're caught, you will be lucky to just be killed."
Ruhn crossed an ankle over a knee. "Believe me, I know that."
"Mordoc is a monster."
"So's the Hind. And the Harpy."
Knowing, now, who Agent Daybright is... and reading back over these interactions. The way he IMMEDIATELY adds that the Hind is a monster, too... IT HURTS ME. Like... DAMMIT.
