1085 gave us a new hanafuda eyecatcher! Momonosuke this time. Put it together with the hanafuda cards for the Straw Hats and the full screen eyecatchers from the same batch.
I love these eyecatchers and would buy a real hanafuda deck of them.
The sun in the lower middle and the moon in the lower right look great together, and the Gear 5 card being Luffy in front of the moon is so cool. I love the connection of the Straw Hats being associated with the sun and the Kozuki Clan being associated with the moon.
Kin'emon and Okiku being the closest to Momo in the lower right is also really neat, those two are often paired together during Wano and also spend the most time with the crew of any of the samurai during the arc. Was curious if either of them would get a hanafuda card though Momo getting one does make a lot of sense too. Those three are our closest Kozuki allies, and now that Luffy has given his flag to Momo, the three of them are considered Straw Hats as far as I'm concerned.

in hindsight, law realizes that it was foolish of him to think that the energetic straw hat captain would heed his words and follow his plan like the others. still, he really can’t believe the slight betrayal he feels when luffy deviates and does not arrive on time. he runs through several scenarios in his head over the hows and whys that might be the driving force behind luffy’s delay. all in all, he's stressed himself out beyond reason.
you tell him more than once that he needs to relax — despite his young age, you’re sure this level of stress isn’t good for the body. still, he barely hears or acknowledges your words until you gently place your hands on his face until you playfully squeeze his cheeks. that snaps him out of that bothersome daze, and he blinks several times before looking down at you, curiosity piqued now.
“do you trust me?” you ask on a whim, a teasing smile slipping onto your face, which only makes law narrow his eyes at you.
“not really,” he says rather quickly, although you know that he’s not being truthful. if anything, law trusts you entirely too much, which is a problem that he’s yet to rectify. his words don’t deter you, and your smile is much warmer when you tug on his hand and lead him to the bath house. questions swirl around inside of him, threatening to spill out, but he decides to keep them to himself for a moment, instead opting to trust you without hesitation.
it's surprisingly empty, which is great in your opinion — because it means you can help him relax without interruption. law manages to piece together what you have planned, and he can admit that he already feels the tension slowly leaving his body. the heat from the water helps relax his muscles, and you rub along his shoulders, kneading his skin firmly.
he grabs your wrist and turns to kiss you, lips moving against yours — the kiss is slow and sensual, igniting something deep within you. he pulls away to trail kisses along your jaw and neck, his palms are rough when they roam along your skin, but you’re so into it you don’t care.
“i’m supposed to be helping you relax,” you say with a sigh, the sound sweet, compelling him to pull you closer to him.
“you are,” he insists, and before he can say more, a cacophonous sound drifts inside, accompanied by the sounds of several pairs of heavy footsteps. it takes you a minute, but you soon realize that penguin, shachi, and bepo are there. you’re not sure who screams first but the noise is loud enough for law’s patience to come to and end. he casts a sharp glance their way, which only prompts them to ramble off excuses and flimsy apologies while you hide behind law to cover yourself up. your heart sits at the base of your throat, making it hard to breathe, the embarrassment powerful enough to make you want to melt into the water immediately as your cheeks flush deeply.
and while law doesn’t like using his devil fruit power for frivolous things, he deems this situation necessary and teleports his idiotic friends out of there. a faint flush finds its way onto his ears and neck, as he considers what would’ve happened if —
no, he wouldn’t go there, because if he did then he might actually strangle them later.
after calming yourself down, all you can do is laugh; it would be your luck that you’d get interrupted like that. law isn’t as forgiving as you are, already plotting a punishment for the trio, although you try your best to calm him down by pulling him in for another kiss.
maybe this time, you’ll really have the place to yourselves.

The smuggler sits down in front of her old man with a large jug of sake and frowns. "you failed to mention Oden....and Momonosuke...sir you have explaining to do..."
Those were names he hadn't heard in a very long time. His eyes immediately shot up to look at Rya rather curiously, the red haired captain wondering how she got to know those to begin with. He rarely talked about his time with the Roger Pirates, no matter how much he thought about them from time to time. Buggy had his ever-present flashy persona and Rayleigh was on Sabaody, that was about all that was left of the once Roger Pirates except for himself. Oden had died at the hands of Kaidou from what he knew, and last he saw little Mononosuke was when Shanks was around 11 years old.
❝ What exactly is there to explain? ❞ The question came out somewhat harsher than he intended. ❝ Haven't been in contact with either for well over two decades now. Clearly you have some questions, though, so I'm listening. ❞

The Elephant In This Room That Is Kanjuro
Before he was revealed as the traitor, this would be just Momo walking to his retainers who swear themselves to fulfill their master’s duty. However, now that we know the long reveal we know those tears he sheds are just an act and basically just crocodile’s tears to play a role to fulfill Orochi’s plans. Any flashback scene with the other retainers is the knowing notion that he was never truly loyal to them and that’s just a snake in the grass waiting to strike.

Man I really am torn because on the one hand yes! I want Yamato to join the crew because I love him! But also just... The way he coaches Mononosuke, grounds him and makes him pick the logical path when he’s crippled by fear... just the two of them together... Yamato is the PERFECT right hand man for Momo when he takes the throne to keep him grounded and help with rational decisions. You KNOW the samurai are just gonna kiss his ass, Momo NEEDS someone like Yamato... Maybe post-adventure Yamato can fill that role but it really feels like Momo needs him NOW more than later... So maybe Yamato has his adventure THEN comes back to help rule Wano like Oden did? But also that turned out to be a huge mistake so... argh... It’s my heart versus my brain here...

One Piece chapter 1043 reaction and spoilers
Love how everyone’s worried about Luffy’s voice disappearing and when Kaidou comes to tell them Luffy is dead Nami calls him a liar to his face.
I love Yamato a lot. He’s right that no one else can really go after Kaidou at this point but Mononosuke. I also like that even though Momonosuke has transformed in himself if he had grown over the last twenty years, he’s still intimidated and scared because technically he’s still only eight years old. I also really like what Yamato says here. “No I won’t let you [Momonosuke] do that [surrender]!! What will that survival even mean?! Only a return to slavery, county down the days to death!! Surrender is not the same as salvation!! This is what the daimyou from all over Wano did when they gave their lives fighting back against Orochi!! The last twenty years of Wano is riding upon this battle!!! If you’re going to let it go to waste then let’s face death together!!”
Luffy’s eyes are darkness like Zunesha’s eyes, which we’ve never seen from Luffy before (usually they’re clear with no pupils when he’s unconscious or near death. It’s interesting to see Luffy looking like he’s melting or oozing like hot rubber at the end of the chapter. It also makes a lot of sense if Luffy is indeed the Joy Boy of this era. I always figured the Straw Hats would encounter the new Joy Boy eventually because Luffy almost destroying Noah made it seem that way. Also, if you think about it, the name Joy Boy is a good moniker for Luffy in general without any past actions attached. It also sounds liked possibly, from what little we’ve heard about Joy Boy, that the former Joy Boy might have had a similar style of handing out favors and promises like Luffy does in canon. What I am curious about is if Joy Boy is a title to earn much like Pirate King is a title to earn or if Joy Boy is something that can inhabit another person or if by dying finally Luffy has awakened something that’s always been a part of him. Perhaps Kaidou could never have become Joy Boy if it is a title or function because part of becoming Joy Boy is a mortal sacrifice of some kind. It’s going to be interesting to see what details we learn in the next chapter and what’s happening to Luffy’s body.

Not to get One Piece on main but I honestly do think that the series is a master class in setting up plot threads and handling foreshadowing, and it’s probably one of the reasons that it works so well as a long-running story.
From as early on as Drum island we get the introduction of Ace looking for Blackbeard, a story line that happens largely aside from the main narrative, but which then suddenly intersects with the main story when Ace is going to be executed and Luffy goes to save him. We meet Ace in Alabasta but between then we have Skypiea and Water 7/Enies Lobby and even Thriller Back and we only see small glimpses of what’s going on at the end of each arc until Luffy really hears what’s going on after the crew get separated in Shaboady.
We have hints about Sanji’s backstory with Zeff in East Blue not being all there is to him from as early on as Jaya when we hear he’s from North Blue and it would not be unreasonable to suppose that the gag of him never getting his picture on a bounty poster until after Dressrosa was all build up to the events that were set in motion when his picture did finally reach the world government.
Similarly, we get our first mention of ‘smiles’ in Jaya, when we also get introduced to Doflamingo. Now, I don’t really believe that Oda knew all the details for Dressrosa at this point, but you really do get the sense that with each character he introduces, especially those in the worldbuilding moments in the lulls between arcs, he has some idea of how they will play a role later on in the story. So he can hint at events to come because knows that he’s planning to pick up those story threads again later.
And that’s just some of the really large scale foreshadowing, because he also has series of arcs that naturally build on one another like everything from Whiskey Peak leading up to Alabasta and Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou, Whole Cake Island, and Wano all clearly having plotlines connecting them. From the foreshadowing we get with Kin’emon and Mononosuke in Punk Hazard, it’s clear that Oda had a pretty good idea of their backstory with Oden and Kaidou back when he first introduced those characters, even if he only fed it to us bit by bit. We didn’t even get the reveal that Mononosuke was actually Oden’s son until Zou, but it’s that, a reveal, rather than a retcon, and that’s in part because Oda is good at setting these things up. And I think this is also where the long-running nature of the series actually works in Oda’s favour, because these kind of reveals hit all the harder when we do think Mononosuke is Kin’emon’s son for years.
And I think this goes for other pieces of set up coming back too: If the series had run as long as Oda had first intended, we would have encountered Brook eventually and found out he was part of the crew Laboon was waiting for, and it would have been a really cool call-back, but with it being over half a decade between the Laboon and Brook’s appearances, it is such an unexpected reveal that still makes absolute sense. I imagine most people barely remembered the whale the crew encountered when they entered the Grand Line. Hell, the 4kids dub apparently thought it was such a minor event that they could edit Laboon out entirely. And yet Oda took what worked as a simple warning about the dangers of the Grand Line and a sad tale about unfulfilled promises and returned to it to break our hearts with Brook’s side of the tale.
One Piece is full of these kinds of moments. Scenes or throwaway references that might intrigue a reader at first, but which are mostly lost in the larger story, only to be picked up on again later and make you go ‘hey, didn’t I hear about that before?’ and ‘ah, of course’. Often Oda will give us enough story hooks that we actually lose track, but when they come back you can’t deny that he played fair with the setting up. We heard that Tamatebako was rigged to explode and we knew it was going to be send to Big Mom for her tea party, and four arcs later we get the satisfaction of finally seeing that explosion go off.
This kind of foreshadowing has two parts: You have to do the initial setting up of plot lines well in advance, and then you need to pick those story threads up again later. And I think Oda excels at both of these, and it’s part of what makes One Piece a story that actually benefits from it’s long-running nature. He can set up events and storylines years in advance, if only because his story always seems to take longer to tell than he plans, and the call-backs seamlessly tie current day One Piece with came before. And the story is all the richer for it.
