Intersex Terminology Guide

Hi everyone! I thought I'd make a guide of basic intersex vocabulary and definitions. I will link to sources when relevant!

intersex: "A difference in sex traits, that happens on its own, and is noticeable enough to cause stigma or violence for breaking an anatomical expectation. " -Hans Lindhal, intersex activist.

"Intersex is an umbrella term for differences in sex traits or reproductive anatomy. Intersex people are born with these differences or develop them in childhood. There are many possible differences in genitalia, hormones, internal anatomy, or chromosomes, compared to the usual two ways that human bodies develop."- InterACT

Intersex variation: A specific variation and diagnosis such as Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, Turner's Syndrome, or Klinefelter's Syndrome. Here's a link to a glossary of many common intersex variations!

Intersexism/dyadism/interphobia: A term to describe intersex oppression. Intersex oppression is rooted in ableism, and manifests through things like medical abuse, harassment, sexual violence, stigma, and pathologization. Here is one working definition for intersexism: "Intersexism is a type of ableism; ableism that is influenced by and rooted in the cisheteronormative idea of how a man or woman needs to function. This “function” is a construct of what settler-colonialism and capitalism see as the most effective way to use gender as exploitation and extraction of profit."-written by Mod Stev of @intersex-support.

Intersex Surgery/Intersex genital mutilation: A term to describe a category of genital surgeries that happen at birth. These surgeries are cosmetic and not medically necessary, and are focused on "normalizing" ambiguous genitalia and sterilization. Here's a report on intersex surgery and interviews with intersex adults. Intersex surgery is legal is almost every country.

Non consensual hormone therapy: A lot of intersex teens and adults are coerced or forced into taking hormones that they do not want to be taking. This happens to both cis and trans intersex people.

Dyadic/Perisex/Endosex: All words that mean someone who is not intersex. Whichever word people use is basically up to personal preference and community norms.

Intergender: Intergender is a gender identity for use by intersex people only. It doesn’t have one specific definition-it is used by intersex people to mean a whole variety of things. It’s used to describe the unique ways our intersex experience intersects with and influences our gender. Some people use it as a modifying term, such as calling themselves an intergender man or woman, as a way to explain the way being intersex affects their identity. Other people identify solely as intergender, and have that be their whole gender. A lot of intergender people consider themselves to be trans, but not all. Here is the intergender flag.

Ipsogender: A gender identity used by intersex people who identify as the gender they were assigned at birth, but feel that being intersex plays into their gender identity and that their experiences are not adequately described by cisgender.

Outdated terminology:

DSD: DSD stands for disorders of sex development, and is the medical term for intersex. DSD terminology was created at the intersex consensus meeting in 2005 by 50 medical experts and two intersex activists, one from ISNA. The DSD terminology shift was also created with the input of a dyadic transphobes who were involved in the shift in ISNA's intersex activism where they distanced themselves from trans and queer politics and instead allied with doctors and medicalization. Some intersex people still do use DSD terminology for themselves, but dyadic allies should avoid it.

Derogatory Language:

Hermaphrodite: This is probably the most common slur used against intersex people. It should never be said by dyadic people, and should never be said to refer to humans. Only intersex people can reclaim hermaphrodite. There is a scientific meaning to hermaphrodite when referring to animals, and dyadic people should only say it in that context and also be considerate if posting things with that word on social media. Hermaphrodite has a very violent history and is a very painful word for many intersex people. If you see someone referring to the "h slur," this is probably the slur they are referring to.

He-she: This is a derogatory term that a lot of intersex people and trans women are called. Similar to the h slur, there is a history of violence and harassment with this term, and a lot of intersex people have been negatively impacted by this term. Dyadic people should never call intersex people a "he-she." It's good to avoid typing out he-she whenever possible, and if referring to someone who uses both he/him and she/her pronouns, saying "she/he" or "him/her" pronouns is a better option.

Futanari: This is essentially the Japanese translation of the h slur. It is used with a lot of fetish content that primarily targets intersex people. Dyadic people should not call real life people "futa" and need to understand that this is an incredibly offensive term. Futanari is also not the Japanese word for intersex; a Japanese intersex activist website uses インターセックス.

Demon Steve/Mod Boss Billy from my Wip list

Steve works for his parents' company collecting souls and he’s pretty awful, constantly on the verge of getting fired. He just doesn’t think every person willing to sell their soul deserves to lose it, swinging things so the little old lady who owns the Italian ice shop wins best bake at the fair hardly seem like an even trade for a soul, so he sometimes forgets to have people sign their deals.

Steve feels glum and escapes the office , to get him and Robin some lunch, an excuse for him to leave the building without giving his father reason to call him out when he smells a soul that is more than tainted enough to have sign a deal. So Steve follows it across the park nose practically in the air until he gets to nearly the other side and finds the beautiful man that soul belongs to sitting on a bench with another man. Steve moves closer, to eavesdrop, not to stare and be a creep at least that’s what he tells himself, you can’t make a deal if you don’t know what they want after all.

When Billy utters the words “I’d sell my soul for a date.” that’s when Steve strikes and reveals himself offering to make it happen.

Steve lets the glamor shift to show his less human aspects. Billy doesn't flinch back or startle like he is expecting, let's out a low appreciating whistle that has heat pooling in his belly.

"I think you might be the prettiest demon I've ever seen. What kind are you pretty boy?" Billy asks, leaning forward and hooking his fingers around Steve's wrist drawing him closer.

"Incubus." Billy whistles again.

"Date with a sex demon, I'd be an idiot to pass that up. Meet me at 3rd and 5th at 8 pretty boy, gonna show you a real good time."

Billy swoops in close plants a kiss at the corner of Steve's mouth grinning as that mouth drops open a fraction before he is running off, has a date to plan and get ready for.

"Wait!" Steve calls after him, sucking his bottom lips between his teeth when it's clear Billy is too far away to hear him. "We didn't even make a deal." He mumbles to himself.

Steve is nervous for his date with Billy, most of his dates go bad people see a succubus and think they can skip right to the sex. Billy doesn’t even try, he take Steve to a nice restaurant and then out to a club with a live band, kisses Steve on the cheek at the end of the night and Steve is more than a little smitten, the idea of taking Billy’s soul all but forgotten.

By the third date Steve is a little desperate for more as Billy once again acts the respectful gentleman kissing Steve’s cheek good night after walking him to his door. It’s not like Steve can’t smell his interest and it’s driving him up a wall.

“You should come in.” Steve says suddenly wings curling around his own body as Billy pauses and the silence that hangs between them as Billy assesses him makes him think, maybe he’s wrong, maybe that interest isn’t for him.

Billy moves forward into Steve’s space backing him up against the wall hands curling around his neck cupping it as that scent grows stronger reassuring Steve as Billy smiles and presses their foreheads together. “Are you sure? I didn’t want to push for that to fast, didn’t want you to think that was all this was. Didn’t want you to think I was anything like those pricks you dated before.” Billy says and Steve is more than a little gone on him, the admittance that he wasn’t pressing for Steve’s comfort just makes him even more desirable in Steve’s eyes.

“I’m sure Billy, come in with me please?” Steve asks, wings curling around Billy’s back when he closes the distance and kisses him.

Steve expects it to be business as usual, he’s the sex demon here, he’s use to his lovers sitting back while he does all the work. Not Billy though, he presses Steve down into the bed, fingers stroking softly over every inch of him followed by his mouth. Billy spends nearly an hour mapping out Steve’s body cataloging all the delightful noises he can drag form him, cock leaking as he shakes and whimpers when Billy finally pushes into him slow but firm thrusts making Steve shake and cry out on each thrust, One of Billy’s hands tangled with his, the other curled around the back of his neck as they keep eye contact. Billy’s mouth drips praise until Steve is shaking apart, coming harder than he ever has before.

They keep dating and Billy has access to a lot of souls worth signing away in his line of work. So Billy starts helping Steve meet his quota pointing him in the right direction and Steve is suddenly not being lectured and threatened with last chances every time he turns around. Steve is always careful to make sure those deals do not negatively affect Billy, never giving anyone the advantage over him.

Someone gets lucky though, goes after Billy and Steve barely makes it in time, finds Billy bleeding out, dying and he can’t let Billy die, he loves him too much to lose him. So Steve asks Billy to make a deal "My soul's yours, pretty boy but in return I want to spend eternity with you." Steve’s heart is hammering as he binds the deal into being.

When Billy wakes up he isn’t human anymore. "I'm a demon?"

"It was either that or immortality and that would of gotten us both screwed. Are you mad?" Steve asks nervously, he’s never actually made a demon before, wasn't sure it would work but he’s so glad it did.

"I get to spend eternity with you?" Billy asks, he’s going to throw a fit otherwise.

"I'm already yours Billy and I'll be with you for as long as you'll have me." Steve promises, Billy using his new tail to curl around Steve’s waist and drag him closer.

"Then eternity it is pretty boy, I never want to be without you." Billy says and Steve smiles into the kiss he drags him into.

Just as he’s about to take the goats back home, a man with shoulder-length brown hair, eyes like the stormy sea, and a bronze metal arm pops into existence a few feet away from him.

“Hi. Have you lost anything today?” the man asks.

Steve screams.

The man screams back.

Steve picks up a rock and throws it at the guy, hitting him in the forehead. “Ow, the fuck!” the man shouts. Steve bends down to get another rock to throw, but the man is gone again by the time he straightens up.

Steve sighs. He’s never going to hear the end of this from Sam.

mod velonius, I kinda feel like I’ve seen the same as you that Steve Rogers was meant to be white as a statement against Hitler, but all I’ve been able to find is http://research.utexas.edu/showcase/articles/view/sentinel-of-liberty-captain-america-on-the-home-front-in-wwii which claims that Steve’s ethnicity didn’t matter - it was just the fact that he was standing up to Hitler/Nazis that mattered. In fact, it even specifically mentions how both creators (Joe Simon and Jack Kirby) are Jewish and that’s what inspired them to create Captain America but never mentions that Steve himself is supposed to be Jewish (although I 100% think he should be). This reading https://observationdeck.kinja.com/one-jews-opinion-on-the-ending-of-captain-america-stev-1778830841 also reads Steve as not specifically coded/written as Jewish but does also mention he’s supposed to be blue-eyed and blonde and white (although no source is listed). I can’t find anything confirming this from Simon or Kirby, though.

Of course, having the aryan vision of a perfect human standing up to Hitler, Nazis, and the Holocaust certainly seems purposeful, verbally confirmed or not.

However, I personally don’t see why any of that means Steve Rogers has to stay white. Like 1) it’s typically fine to racebend white people because they’re everywhere in media and racebending can have at least just as strong a statement (and tbqh clinging so hard to a white Steve is a little… creepy? especially with the perspective of him not specifically being Jewish as stated by creators), 2) creators aren’t perfect - in the early Captain America comics themselves, we get grotesquely racist caricatures of Japanese people (which you yourself admitted) - and neither are their creations, so why can’t we want to improve upon them, and 3) it seems that Steve’s real purpose was simply to take a stand against Nazism, so why does it matter how that’s done through his race?

So it’s Spring Break where I am and as such the library isn’t open and I’d have an easier time convincing Trump to step down as president than finding that paper so I could source it for what I’m “sure” I read.

So you’re right SR/CA creators made horrible Japanese caricatures they aren’t immune to criticism on their actions due to their Jewishness. I just..how do I explain this properly. Okay so I’ve had this stance of “leave SR white because of the creators intentions” for a while now and when I think about why I feel that way it’s like Captain America/Steve Rogers was created during WW2 in response to the attrocities of Hitler and America’s inaction and since they creators were Jewish they were feeling the weight of what Hitler was doing.

Obviously they weren’t targeted like Jewish people in Germany but I believe when stuff like that happens every person of that group feels the weight of those injustices in some form or another and Captain America/Steve Rogers was the way they dealt with that weight and since there’s nothing inherently wrong with them making that decision I think that we should respect that - if that’s actually the case. Like I said on that other post if it turns out I’m imagining things then have at him. I guess I feel like they made SR that way to deal with the trauma of what was happening and I dunno that should be maintained and respected if possible or if that’s the case.

And I mean this is just an opinion not a fact. I’m not gonna see a fancast of SR as someone not white and be like “hey hey what the fuck is this nonsense.”

it really drives me crazy that in the debate for trans rights, intersex people get completely forgotten by both sides. like, don't get me wrong, im a trans man and understand that the knee-jerk response to terfs saying 'they're transing kids genders' is to say that nobody's fucking doing that, because trans kids aren't getting access to puberty-blockers, even (they should be allowed puberty blockers tho but that's a whole other subject), let alone HRT or surgeries.

except for intersex kids. and i understand when trans people forget about us, it's usually not malicious ignorance, but it still hurts. and then of course there's the ridiculousness that is terfs claiming that kids are getting gender-affirming treatments while completely ignoring the realities of IGM. like. just say you hate trans people.

it feels like nobody cares about us except ourselves, and even then internalized intersexism is so pervasive that we barely even have that. it gets a little lonely. and im privileged enough to have a less visible intersex condition - i can only imagine what it's like for people who don't have that privilege.

What's fucked up is that there is evidence showing hrt saves trans kids lives, and igm puts intersex lives in danger. It's almost like taking autonomy away and dehumanizing people is a bad thing... because it is lol. Also to add to that, it's not just puberty blockers, hrt, and surgery that's being denied to trans people (AND intersex people for that matter, whether trans or not we often get denied essential hormones and affirming surgeries), it's also just the denial of being able to express ourselves in general.

Honestly, a lot of dyadic trans people often make it feel like they're the only ones suffering from the enforcement of gender, and that their experience is the epitome of all gender experiences. I'd like to say it's because they don't know any better, but some of them most definitely do. It's hard when intersex trans people are the only ones talking about it, it makes it feel like we're only collateral damage.

I would love to see more dyadic trans people think better about their wording, trans spaces need to start being safe for intersex people. We really do not have a lot of places we can go right now.

Edit: dyadic people, don't reblog this. We do not have the capacity currently to deal with discourse that always comes with things like this being shared. We're also not here to tell you how to be inclusive of intersex people unless we choose to.

Jack, this is Steve.” Steve looked at Sam a little wildly, expecting to see—he didn’t even know, but some reaction other than Sam’s usual easy friendliness. And there was something there, but it was just the twitch of Sam’s mouth that said he found something hilarious and he was trying not to show it. Was this Sam’s idea of a joke, or a prank? Because this guy—behind the glasses and mustache, Steve could have sworn—well, he looked like Bucky.
