If/when: another set with separated faction packs in prerelease kits like Phy/Mirran from Mirrodin Besieged, or a facton set prerelease with a seeded faction pack like Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Khans and Dragons of Tarkir?
If. We’ve pulled back a bit from specialized prerelease packs. The game design is optimized for the normal play pattern, and we want the prerelease to show off the best the set can be.

I’ve always been a big fan of old style fantasy art in the realm of trashy sci fi and fantasy novel covers, and even though I’m about 10-20 years removed from what feels like the heyday for this style, being introduced to Magic the Gathering let me have access to some of the last remaining goliaths who shaped and changed fantasy art as we know it.
As Magic the Gathering modernizes to try and attract new players, the art style shifts, and many of the newer artists to the scene take a more modern approach to art design as well. I think whenever something like this happens you run the risk of a community losing its identity and the pillars that support it. When art institutions adopted Impressionism as the forward movement of the time it involved a rejection of other art heritages spanning 100s of years.
MtG is also a much more profitable corporation now. When artists are picked to design a card, I’m sure they have much less freedom in card design than they did 20 years ago. They’ve compartmentalized. An artist like Phil Foglio wouldn’t (and doesn’t) get to make cards for MtG anymore (besides a new alternate art for Chaos Warp) just because his style can’t fit into any check boxes for what MtG art is supposed to be anymore.
This post was really brought on by the newish brothers war set which is based on one of my favorite sections of MtG lore, and almost all of the art is rather uninspired. Urza and Mishra are just dudes. No sense of Shakespearean drama happening in their cards. No sense of Cain and Abel among them, just what looks like a regular old wizard fight. Even the alternate art cards, which are the design choice to fill the hole for people that care about card art, feel lacking. If this is a topic of any interest to the reader, I’d encourage you to compare the art from The Brother’s War with a set like Mirrodin Besieged.
Especially compare the “power” cards of the set, which are usually the most expensive, and would get the focus for whatever MtG would consider “good” art.

Cornwall’s Random Card of the Day #510: Inkmoth Nexus
Tumblr media
Inkmoth Nexux is a rare from Mirrodin Besieged.
So, this card is(like many Scars block cards were) a reference to original Mirrodin block. Specifically, Blinkmoth Nexus. Blinkmoth Nexus had the ability to turn into a 1/1 flying Blinkmoth for a turn for {1}, as well as to tap to buff a Blinkmoth by +1/+1 until end of turn for {1}. Inkmoth Nexus is a compleated version of that card, losing the buffing power in exchange for Infect, which is a far faster clock. This was quite the powerhouse in limited due to it not really taking up a card slot in the deck. I do love when MtG puts in references like this into their cards, especially on return sets.

Moxtober Entry 5 - Village This might be the loosest one I've done so far in relation to the prompt. While I envisioned her creating a clan (or a village) of Goblin automatons to keep her company, Qerk was originally a throwaway character relegated to the flavor text of the card Goblin Wardriver, from Mirrodin Besieged.

Planeshift pdf

#Planeshift pdf skin
With the world being hollow, there are plenty of dungeons to explore along with other styles of adventure. So much of the world is unknown since the populations were kept maintained to a certain point and are relatively new. Mirrodin's setting is great for classic D&D. Both settings are ripe for adventure and beg to be explored as new places for D&D players to explore become available. The other setting the the metallic horror and war of New Phyrexia, where the people fight against nightmares of flesh and steel which seek to purge them either in death or compleate them with phyresis. The first is the original Mirrodin with a metallic high fantasy feel for D&D players to enjoy exploration and meeting the people. In recent years, Mirrodin has become a good place for two different kinds of settings. It's just so interesting that it begs for a Plane Shift article to be made for them.
#Planeshift pdf skin
Even the people are partially metal with the metal skin they sport on portions of their bodies. It is literally a new world, one which is made almost entirely of metal. Mirrodin is a plane unique to itself and in my mind, ripe for adventure. It also made a reappearance in the sets Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, and New Phyrexia. This artifact centered plane can be found in Mirrodin, Darksteel, and Fifth Dawn. This time it looks over the all metal plane of Mirrodin. Well, here comes Plane Shift number three.

The keyword ability "Battle cry" is returning in 'Phyrexia: All Will Be One'. It first appeared in the set 'Mirrodin Besieged' and only on seven cards. Since then it has appeared on three more cards and another with a slight rewording of the ability on Honored Crop-Captain. However, did you know the ability first appeared on a card way back in Tempest? The card Renegade Warlord has the ability in non-keyworded form. Straight up in the text box instead of as reminder text.

Re: upcoming cards-named-after-sets. So far, they have all been specific references. e.g. Mirrodin Besieged(card) is a reference to Mirrodin Besieged(set). Is it possible for there still to be cards that use a set name but aren't related? e.g. Prophecy(set) is not a reference to Prophecy(card). There are still sets with names that could be on a generic card.
R&D seems tickled doing it. I'm sure one day we'll do a generic reference.

Cornwall’s Random Card of the Day #225: Priests of Norn
Tumblr media
Norn!!
Priests of Norn is a common from Mirrodin Besieged, a set I played when the Mtg website was still good and therefore have a lot of info about. So, in the Scars of Mirrodin block, we got to see the Phyrexians take over Mirrodin. The Nim from Mirrodin block were already there and Phyrexian, but nobody knew that at the time. So in the first set of Scars they showed Phyrexians in the most Phyrexian colours, black and green (since Phyrexia is an infection, so biological warfare is very black/green) with a small amount of blue and it was introduced to white in Besieged.
This here is a great way to introduce common Infect to white: uh, wait. Did I talk about Infect before? Let’s talk about Infect, one of the most divisive mechanics in magic. So. Prior to modern magic (by which I mean about Mirrodin or so) there were a scattering of cards which gave out poison counters to players. Players with 10 or more poison counters lose the game. This makes it a kind of alternate, smaller, life total. In Scars, Maro, a big poison fan, decided to bring it back in a big way, making it one of the big archetypes of the format.
But how to do so? Well first, to make it not seem like just another life total, it was decided not to print cards which removed poison counters. This gave a lot of players INTENSE FEAR, since they couldn’t merely life-gain their way to safety (oh, also this makes Commander players have an actually manageable life total which an aggro deck can touch. Oh noes!). Someone hits you with poison, you are closer to losing, no matter what. Second, they’d tried creatures giving poison counters via combat damage in Future Sight (the roiling testbed of Magic sets) but people were just dying by normal damage at about the same time as they did of poison.
So, it was decided to make Infect: a mechanic which changed the damage dealt by sources with it to poison counters to players, and -1/-1 counters to creatures. This last part was an adaptation of Wither from Shadowmoor, which also gave a nasty feeling that they wanted to utilise with the Phyrexians. Block or not, SOMETHING is getting a permanent boo-boo.
Infect existed only in black and green in Scars, but like I said, it was intro’d to White and Blue in Besieged. This card here is a great way to get it to common for two reasons: one, it can act simply as a wall with Wither, just making it less appealing for opponents to attack with smaller creatures. Two, it has Vigilance, which means you often will have no penalty for attacking each turn, meaning you might as WELL just chip in for a bit of poison damage.
Poison doesn’t encourage you to mix and match it and real damage in a deck, so being able to put an Infect card in an otherwise non-infect deck for value is great for limited. Plus, flavourfully, having one Infect card makes the prospect of adding others more appealing, and after you add THEM, well, might as well go ahead and try to go all-in on the strategy. Insidious!
Oh, and also these guys are priests of Elesh Norn, some Phyrexian praetor or other, maybe you’ve heard of her?
