I love his sketches so much - it's just creating a vast sandbox for the fandom - for artists and fic writers to play with the ideas he has no time / energy to explore. It's truly amazing.

I do all the shigadabi talk but we also deserve increasingly unhinged art and fics with Hana Shimura for the worst.

Allow Mirko to hate Hana's guts because she is a stone cold liar and a killer, to the point it gets sapphic. Give me Curious a chance to kiss Hana's ass just like Redestro was doing it with Tomura. Make her a win for the lesbian community, c'mon. Let the girl free herself of any judgement or expectations. Give her the same treatment as Tomura: "I feel like I'll be forgiven not matter what". So  I  was  talking  about  this  with  friends  in  disco  but  the  fanon  of  Dabi  being  blasted  out  of  his  mind  on  drugs  24/7  is  one  I  hate  sm,  because  like,  yeah, there  is  something  very  wrong  with  him  but  its  more  in  the  spooky  /  undead  vein  than  anything  else  and  I  would  think  that  is  so  obvious.      Like  I  guess  that  fanon  got  popular  before  all  the  background  "reveals"  for  him  but  at  the  same  time  Nomu  always  existed  as  a  thing. (  Undead/reanimated  human  corpses )  so  it  kinda  baffles  me  how  the  fandom  took  a  look  at  Dabi  and  just  said  "its  hard  drugs"  keeping  in  mind  he's  literally  inspired  by  stuff  like  the  revenant  zombie  and  frankenstein's  monster.      

Like  anyway,  fanon  sucks  in  general  but  my  point  is  I'm  sexy  and  big  brained  so  I  choose  to  go  a  bit  harder  on  those  horror  inpsos  because  of  course  I  do,  but  since  canon  fully  supports  me  on  it  I  gotta  also  point  out  as  bizarre  as  it  is,  it  would  even  appear  that  parts  of  dabi's  body  have  fallen  off  in  the  past.  

  I  mean  for  one  we  can  see  its  pretty  obvious  Dabi's  entire  face  could  come  apart  if  not  for  the  staples  in  his  cheeks  and  chin  but  theres  also  the  fact  that  Hori  did  an  art  piece  where  we  can  see  Dabi's  tongue  is  stapled  on  as  well.  That  seems  to  indicate  it  could  have  fallen  off  at  one  point.  Literally  theres  no  other  reason  for  the  tongue  staples  otherwise.    

 There's  a  similar  implication  with  one  of  his  arms,  its  stabled  right  around.  And  like  I  said,  we  saw  with  Dabi's  face  the  staples  aren't  there  for  the  aesthetic,  they're  actually  holding  him  together.  And  like,  yes,  we  know  when  Dabi  burned  he  lost  pretty  much  all  of  his  lower  jaw  and  obviously  his  tongue  would  have  been  part  of  the  area  that  was  damaged/completely  burned  away,  but  we're  still  aware  that  when  Dabi  initially  awoke  after  being  "reconstructed"  by  Garaki,  his  grafts  weren't  as  pronounced  (  They  were  normal  and  seemingly  "healed"  )  and  he  didn't  have/need  staples  to  hold  himself  together.

So  yeah,  this  means  even  if  his  tongue  was  replaced/reattached,  there  came  a  point  where  it  either  fell  off  or  stated  to,  hence  he  had  to  staple  it  on.  Like  I've  kinda  mentioned  before  Dabi's  scars/burns  are  def  going  through  a  type  of  dehiscence, meaning  his  grafts/scars  are  discolored  and  separating  from  the  parts  of  his  skin  that  are  not  serving  as  constant  ignition  points  for  his  quirk. This  gives  Dabi  a  "rotting"  appearance,  again,  like  a  zombie. 

On  top  of  this,  its  canon  info  that  Dabi  just  smells  like  burning  skin  and  death.  Like  thats  his  essence. Mirko  specifically  makes  comments  about  it  which  are  present  in  Hawks  report  so.  Yeah.  Endless  points  for  the  zombie  aesthetic  and  due  to  the  fact  we  also  know  Dabi  is  somehow  able  to  "stay  alive"  after  suffering  burns  and  injuries  that  would  easily  kill  ANY  normal  person  with  NO  other  reason  for  why  it  hasn't  killed  him,  I'm  pretty  chill  going  ahead  and  saying  Dabi  is  some  type  of  undead  already.  Like  some  type  of  "accidental"  proto-Nomu.  I  don't  particularly  care  if  thats  a  specifically  canon  thing  but  i  think  thats  the  suggestion  and  none  the  less  it  truly  makes  no  sense  otherwise  so  it  will  pretty  much  be  canon  to  this  portrayal.

Like its  also  been outright stated  he  is  supposed  to  be  dead.  Canon  claims  the  only  reason  Dabi  is  alive  ( And  I  use  "alive"  very  dubiously,  for  all  these  reasons )  is  because  of  his  hatred/anger.  Which again  this  is  the  exact  concept  behind  folklore's  revenant zombies.  They're  human  bodies  who  are  dead  but  also  alive/function  as  if  they're  alive  or  rather  are  heavily  between  dead  and  alive  so  they  "function"  as  if  they're  "living"  but  also  sometimes  have  "hints"  of  their  true  nature  of  being  a  pesky  type  of  undead,  like  not  fucking  dying  from  injuries  that  should  kill  them  or  having  bodies  that  are  lowkey  "rotting"  like  the more  "popular"  zombie  type. 

Similarly,  Dabi  also  seems  to  heavily  draw  reference  to  the  Onryo  of  japanese  myth,  which  is  also  a  vengeful  undead  or  spirit  and  very  similar  to  a  revenant  zombie.  Onryo  are  also  usually  depicted  in  white  gowns/kimonos  and,  well,  dabi's  final  battle  outfit  is  strikingly  reminiscent  of  this.

The  other  big  difference  between  revenant  zombies  and  the  zombies  we're  used  to  in  pop-culture  nowadays  is  revenant  zombies  don't   usually loose  any  human  intelligence, memory  or  personality  and/or  they  don't  typically  lust  for  human  flesh/brains.  Though,  given  most  of  them  "stay  alive"  or  "come  back"  due  to  an  insane  grudge/hatred  of  someone/thing  that  wrong  them  they  are  often  extremely  bloodthirsty  and  revenge  driven  which  continues  to  fit  Dabi  to  a  T, so yeah, thanks for coming to my latest useless ted talk !

Diff anon but your answer on sadomasochism enlightened me. 'It doesn't have to be sexual' changed my whole view. It's because we're exposed to that term as negative/sexual hence we never give a thought beyond that. Also what's ur opinion on people calling the Mirko stuff as Torture p*rn. I disagree with it but I realised I may be missing something they are seeing.I feel this happens to many chrs.Endv,Ngnt,Sgrk,Bkg. Plus she's still going strong. Had she been in pain, I would have somewhat agreed

One need not look much farther than the centuries of religious art to get a sense of how universal sadomasochism can be as an artistic theme lol.

As for your question, I think "torture porn" is the catch-all term people are using to describe a bit more than just what the term sounds like. There are a few porn tropes and such that people seem to be spotting, but like...this is complicated. Maybe more complicated than I'm about to treat it, or maybe more complicated than those people are treating it.

On the one hand, you have the issues of exploitation and addiction and other psychological consequences of the porn industry. I don't think it's fair to hold a Japanese manga responsible for these issues (especially when it's, you know, not porn), but I can understand why people might feel uncomfortable about what they're seeing for various reasons. There are also those who will feel uncomfortable with violence or gore in general (although let's be real, MHA has plenty of that already). No one has to be comfortable with what's going on. And I'm not out here to defend the objectification portion of fetishization that harms people in real life. If someone has been harmed by that before and they see something worth speaking out about, that's fair.

On the other hand, I draw the line at white knight advocacy. There may be those who see signs of familiar fetish tropes in Mirko because of her dark skin or lost limbs, but there are two sticky issues with jumping to conclusions here:

1. Western tropes don't necessarily translate to other parts of the world. The USA especially has a tendency to ascribe its conceptions of race to other countries, and that makes for some pretty awkward criticism of Horikoshi if you don't take that into account. Dark skin exists and is perceived differently in other cultures. There are dark-skinned Japanese people. We can't just assume anything about race when we see what WE might perceive as one race in a manga. White people LOVE to ask the question "Why are there so many white people in anime?" without stopping to think "Wait, ARE they actually white, or am I just assuming that because I think the default is white?" (Hint: It's almost always the latter.)

2. Just getting mad on behalf of a marginalized group doesn't qualify you to speak out. I've seen some people who are members of the groups Horikoshi's treatment of Mirko allegedly objectifies, and while not all of them have the same takes, a non-negligible number of them seem far more exasperated with the flat discourse from the fandom condemning Mirko than with Mirko's treatment. Anyone who cares about these issues could do a lot more good by empowering the voices of people they actually think are hurt by this than spouting their own asinine takes. I for one am particularly annoyed with the retaliatory desexualization and infantilization of amputees and the physically disabled that many people are engaging in without much consideration. One behavior by others that affects me as a disabled person is how many people love to speak on my behalf because they truly believe I'm not capable of speaking for myself and that they have my best interests at heart. And to them: You know what? Fuck you. I have my own opinions and you don't speak for me. Try listening for once. And for what it's worth? I'm a sexy disabled motherfucker too.

As far as Mirko goes, she's living up to her ideals. She has regrets about not taking down Shigaraki when she had the chance, and she probably attributed some of that to her injuries and loss of limb at the time. Now she's getting a do-over regarding that, and she's fucking rocking it. Maybe there are some bits that I could stand to have handled differently, or maybe I'm overly used to weird anime bullshit, but regardless, I'm fully convinced if I look into a mirror and scream "Struggle!" three times, Mirko will jump out of it and bite open my neck, and I for one welcome that sweet, bloody, badass death.
