*at Café Einebrise, Tatsuya, Miyuki, Erika, Leo, Mikihiko, Mizuki, Honoka and Shizuku are having dinner*
Leo: *stabs the biggest piece of steak with his fork*
Erika: *grabs Leo's hand* What do you think you're doing? That's the big piece.
Leo: *yanks his hand away from Erika* Yeah. So?
Erika: The big piece goes to the big dog, AKA me.
Leo: And what makes you the big dog?
Erika: Um, everything. I'm smarter than you, I'm stronger than you, I can wet-nurse better than you. *lactates through her dress* Easy, girls.
Leo: Sorry, Erika. Anything you can do, I can do better.
Erika: I can do anything better than you.
Leo: No, you can't!
Erika: Yes, I can!
Leo: No, you can't.
Erika: Yes, I can. *stands up and sings* ♪Yes, I can!♪
Leo: *stands up and sings* ♪No, you can't!♪
Erika: ♪Yes, I can!♪
Leo: ♪No, you can't!♪
Miyuki: *activates Niflheim and freezes the restaurant* Enough! Can't we have one meal without you two getting into an angry singing contest?! Why is everything a competition? *unfreezes the restaurant*
Tatsuya: Yeah, you guys should just fuck and get it over with. *Everyone stares at Tatsuya while both Leo and Erika blush over his statement* Clearly, they have repressed sеxual feelings for each other that they're channeling into hostility.
Mikihiko: How's that Psych 101 class going?
Tatsuya: It's only day three, but I understand how the whole world works now.
Anime name: The Irregular at Magic High School (also known as Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei )
Genre(s): Alternate history, science fantasy
Lauren’s Like Rating: 6/10 (I found myself very invested in the main character and his sister, but honestly I found myself just looking up info on the manga and light novels. I did finish the anime, but it was not always a pleasant experience. It was like looking at a snapshot of the middle of a story without ever hearing the necessary information for it to comfortably make sense. For example, many times complicated stuff was all said at once about magic, but you are never told the basics onto which that information would be intended to build on. Sometimes it felt like I was sitting in a lecture for something I had missed the beginner’s course on. Very important information about basic things in a character’s life of the world would be left until late or never said. I’m all for a dramatic unveiling when appropriate, but something like “oh yeah all people who have magic are at least partially lab grown, whatever everybody knows this” has no reason to be held secret from the viewer for so long, it doesn’t even affect the story beyond giving the viewer more information about the world. TL;DR: bad adaptation of the original source material, and it is so obvious that I can say that without having actually read the source, just summaries. That being said, if there is ever another attempt, I would watch it.)
Tatsuya Shiba is a magician who attends First High School along with his sister, Miyuki. He struggles with the most basic magic, but excels at magic that other people find extremely difficult or even impossible, though since the school’s initial tests only tested basic skills, he was sorted into course 2, and referred to as a “weed” by snotty course 1 “bloom” students. He also has the role of being his sister’s protector, a role given to him by their family. He is extremely intelligent and loyal, especially to Miyuki. His emotions, aside from familial love for Miyuki, have been sealed away, causing him to at times come off as cold. He is also an inventor and a strategist.
Mikihiko Yoshida is another student at First High School and a classmate of Tatsuya. His specialty is working with spirits, a technique passed down through his family, though he had an experience that caused him to have a mental block for awhile. He is very shy, but he and Tatsuya become friends.
Leonhard Saijo, also known simply as Leo, is another friend and classmate of Tatsuya. He’s a pretty easy going and cheerful guy, though he can be hot-blooded at times, too. He uses his family’s Fortress Series magic which allows him to fortify objects and essentially have magic armor. He is also very physically powerful.
Mayumi Saegusa is the student council president at First High School when Tatsuya and Miyuki first enroll. She is highly perspective, cunning and somewhat mischievous, but she likes to act sweet and unassuming.
Kyoko Fujibayashi is the First Lieutenant of the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion. She uses Thunder Needle and, as she is also skilled with technology, can also use her magic to hack electronic devices. She is known as the “Electron Sorceress.”
What’s up with anime high school students and having food in the school science lab?
Worse still, after she dropped her frankly delicious-looking egg sandwich, they didn’t clean up after themselves before running off to attend to some emergency on campus
This magic high school better be paying their janitors very well.
