↳ picking theme songs is something that can be so personal
                                                                                         LISTEN HERE.
songs yana relates to:
Perfume Genius - Wreath
Burn off every trace I wanna hover with no shape I wanna feel the days go by Not stack up Running up that hill I'm gonna peel off every weight Until my body gives away And shuts up
This song is very much about Mike Hadreas’ (PG) struggle with a chronic illness (a common theme in his music, which j’addicted to), and the ways in which he feels that his body turns against him/betrays him/etc. Yana doesn’t have Crohn’s like Mike does but she struggles a lot with a constant fear re: her mind and body. It’s an ever-present fear and one that has consumed her on occasion. In this case, the fear is of addiction (and also her mental health, to a lesser degree). She is afraid of being beholden to something, of hurting herself, of being like her parents. And what makes it scarier is how easily she can imagine herself giving in to it. In the lyrics I chose, Mike writes about wishing to live without a shape, without any burdensome metaphorical weight, for his body’s needs to leave him alone. He wants life to be easier. These are all constant thoughts of Yana’s.
Jordana - I Guess This is Life
I couldn't tell you in words how I'm feeling Maybe what I need's a good proper healing Spend most of my nights staring at the ceiling Tried all the God stuff but I stoppеd believing
This applies more to Yana when she was a little younger, maybe. But it’s been a song I’ve listened to for the past couple of years and always thought of her so... <3 Yana has a lot of pent-up frustrations/issues with her family that she will never, under any circumstances, address with them at any point in the near future. Like, not a chance in hell. And even if she did want to, she wouldn’t know where to start or what to say, or how to say it. She feels wildly out of touch with them but also hyperaware of how that experience has shaped her into the person she is today. For all that she feels these negative emotions, every step and every interaction (big and small) had led her to where she is now. For better or for worse. It has shaped her worldview and how she relates/interacts with others and that’s a lot of what the song is about. I chose the above lyrics specifically because I felt they captured Yana’s inability to communicate with her parents.
songs that capture yana’s relationships:
Boy Scouts - That’s Life Honey (Cruz)
If I were to die by volcano I’d be laughing at the irony Bottle it up and you will surely explode You’d say "why didn’t you tell me?"
And I’d say Well, I wanted to But couldn’t figure how My burdens Should become yours now
This song is very much about a less-than-ideal circumstance that’s out of your control and imagining a world in which the whole thing could just magically get better with the snap of your fingers or with a specific price tag. It’s another song that’s a lot about learning how to open up about things too (a skill all humans must learn given the fact that vulnerability can be a bitch!). I chose this song for Yana and Cruz because I feel it’s representative of both the early days of their relationship and their relationship currently. Yana had to learn a lot about how to both open up to him and how to feel like she could lean on him without feeling like a burden/a failure. Significant reliance feels like a weakness to her. And then on the other hand, with graduation nearing, their future hangs in the air and the talks they’ve had about the next steps have been primarily... unsuccessful. They both want to go to grad school. Yana will go wherever she can and to whoever will take her, no matter how far. She’s unsure of what she’s allowed to ask of Cruz, if only because she cannot rationalize making any huge demands. It feels selfish and shitty, especially because she has zero intentions of making any sacrifices herself in this specific situation. Not when it comes to this goal she’s held for so long.
Indigo De Souza - Hold U (Dev)
You are a good thing I've noticed, I've noticed And I want a good thing with you You are the best thing, and I've got it, I've got you And I would do anything for you
COMMUNITIES AND PLATONIC COMPANIONSHIP ARE FULL OF LOVE AND HELP US SURVIVE. “I WILL HOLD YOU” IN MY ARMS, “I WILL HOLD” A PLACE FOR YOU IN MY LIFE. I LOVE YOU AND I CELEBRATE YOU AND YOU’RE NOT ALONE. WE CAN HEAL EACH OTHER IN LITTLE WAYS. WILL YOU HOLD ME TOO? LET’S WALK THROUGH LIFE TOGETHER.  Anyway, I hope that sums up why I chose this song for Yana and Dev. Dev is Yana’s Person through and through. She’s a good thing that Yana’s noticed. Yana wants to be soulmates forever. She’s so glad she has Dev in her life. She would do anything for her. Etc. etc. etc. <3333
theme songs for the group:
My Morning Jacket - Highly Suspicious
I'm high (Highly suspicious) Highly suspicious of you (Highly suspicious of you) I'm high (Highly suspicious) Highly suspicious of you (Highly suspicious of you)
So, this song very much seems to be about paranoia (specifically drug-induced paranoia) and the album it comes from is also primarily thematically about our wars between our best and worst natures, which I felt was a very apt kind of... vibe for the group. The mood of the song is also both intense and a little cartoonish (if you listen to MMJ at all, you probably already know this song is like, Very Different from their usual stuff) in the way that I think a lot of fun horror movies are. But anyway, I would just love to see some finger-pointing and arguing and stuff. I love drama :^)
Laura Marling - Devil’s Resting Place
I am loath to say it's the devil's taste I've been with the devil in the devil's resting place
Water won't clean you, water won't clean you You only hold yourself to the things you do
I’m pretty sure this song is literally about getting freaky with the Devil (or like, the metaphorical Devil... or something). So it’s a lot about facing your sins/past transgressions, being at fault and filled with regret, and feeling like there’s no way to cleanse or forgive yourself. I am sure plenty of the cabin-goers are going to do or say things they regret, but I’m also sure they’ve done or said things in the past that they regret that are going to come to a head amidst the tension and fear. I just think this miiight be an overarching and very human struggle that will arise for everyone over the course of the three days, especially whoever’s the saboteur. [eyes emoji]
songs yana has a special connection to:
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
See, my old man's got a problem He lives with the bottle, that's the way it is He says his body's too old for working His body's too young to look like his
Siri, play the song that’s been on Yana’s ‘On Repeat’ playlist ever since she downloaded Spotify back in the ninth grade — thanks! This is the song Yana will listen to when she’s driving on her own, when she’s on the bus, when she’s walking to class, or literally whenever. It’s from the perspective of a woman whose life isn’t working out as she hoped, who works hard, and desperately hopes things will get better. Yana has a tendency to fixate on what’s wrong in her life, on what’s not lining up for success, or on the things she’s not doing a good job at. When she finds herself doing that, she listens to “Fast Car”... and clearly she listens to it a lot. I chose the above lyrics because they’re honestly very on the nose for her and her dad (though I think the original intention of ‘old man’ is referencing a significant other, but we will ignore that!).
Elliott Smith - 2:45 AM
I'm going out now like a baby A name unsatisfiable baby Grabbing onto whatever's around For the soaring high or the crushing down
"2:45 AM” is about arguments and about old trauma and the bad habits we make along the way when trying to cope with them. Yana’s sober because she’s afraid of being like someone else, but she went through periods of drinking heavily in her freshman year. This song feels very personal to her. She listens to it a lot after stilted phone calls and when she feels hurt by something her friends said or did, or when she thinks about her brother. Yana’s a very big Elliott Smith fan (second only to Cher and third sometimes to Tori Amos), and she feels he’s best listened to when the sun’s setting, the window’s opened a crack and you can feel a cool breeze sneaking through, you know you have to take a shower but you haven’t gotten out of bed yet, and your chest feels a little tight. You’re sad but you haven’t cried yet kind of vibes.
theme songs for the friends:
The Shins - Australia
Dare to be one of us, girl Faced with the android's conundrum I felt like I should just cry But nothing happens every time I take one on the chin You're Himmler in your coat you don't know how long I've been Watching the lantern dim starved of oxygen So give me your hand and let's jump out the window
I love this song... slay. It’s about work and how damn boring and confining it can be, which may sound like the antithesis to what a theme song for a friend group should be but hold awn hold awn hold awn hear me out. 1) Listen to it! The energy of this song is incredible and I remember listening to the CD on the little boombox that I placed the album sticker on in my childhood room in the seventh grade and like, physically vibrating. “WOW, this is music? This is music and I’m in love and I will spend the rest of my life searching for things that recapture this feeling.” Anyway, that’s the exact energy I think you can experience with groups of friends that you have when you’re young. You’re all a little obsessed with each other, despite your interpersonal hang-ups or issues or whatever, as you face those stressful, mundane/tedious, and sad moments of young adulthood together. So there’s that. 2) When it comes to the lyrics and the legit meaning of the song, I can easily relate it to the fact that they’ve all met in undergrad, which is an experience that many do, in fact, find boring and confining as you slog through weird class requirements and lame parties and tough exams and shitty professors. So give me your hand and let’s jump out the window! Let’s find solace in each other. Let’s find small ways to escape the tedium. Let’s find joy in each other’s comapny. Let’s cross that finish line together and get OUTTA here together. 3) Does that make any sense? LOL.
Honorable mention: “Into the Unknown” from Over the Garden Wall (despite the reference to autumn... work with me here) just for kicks. <3
