Haikea (Finnish)
[ˈhɑi̯keɑ]
Translation: A feeling of quiet, melancholic, sometimes even mournful longing. "Wistful" comes fairly close as a translation, though it's not exactly the same.
Finnish is an Uralic language belonging to the Finnic branch spoken by 5 300 000 people in Finland, where it is one of two national languages (the other is Swedish though it is less used, Finnish is the main language).
Motivation: It's one of the most beautiful words to say in Finnish, IMO; it has a beautiful flow to the vowels, and it almost sounds like a sigh. It's also an emotion often associated with a lot of Finnish art, literature, music and culture in general, and thus it's a strong part of Finnish identity.
Metsänpeitto (Finnish)

Translation: Getting lost in a forest in a way that one suddenly no longer recognizes the terrain around them and becomes invisible to others (according to mythology).
Finnish is an Uralic language belonging to the Finnic branch spoken by 5 300 000 people in Finland, where it is one of two national languages (the other is Swedish though it is less used, Finnish is the main language).
Motivation: I love that there's a word for this concept! And (like almost all Finnish words) it sounds beautiful.

Hey! I bumped into your post about the Russian man who has Rusalki in his pond and Baba Yaga's house poops in his yard occasionally. I liked it a lot. It's a shame that people always focus on Eurocentric supernatural folk stories and don't give Russian folk stories a chance. Slavic mythology, in general, is awesome.
I've wanted to do something with finnish folklore in a magical realism sort of setting, but I haven't figured out how to get the vibe right. Finnish folklore isn't particularly epic, mainly the supernatural is just mundane everyday things that want to ruin your crops, eat your cattle and kill you, just like every other daily inconvenience of rural farming life.
There was this concept of metsänpeitto - "cover of the forest" - where someone going through the woods either accidentally slips through the veil to the side of the forest spirits, or is covered up by the elves or tonttu on purpose (they'll do that out of spite because they're dicks), where everything looks the same or eerily similar, but you can't find your way back home. Sometimes you even can find your way home, but somehow can't touch anything or be seen by anyone, or they don't recognise you.
There's magic things you can do in order to try to undo it and get back to your own side, but most of the time you're just as hopelessly lost as a fly that's stuck between two window panes and can't figure out why it can't fly right through. People and cattle that were lost this way sometimes appear weeks later, starved startled and haggard, but sometimes the forest just covers you up and you never find your way back.
I wanted to incorporate this into a magical realism story, set in a world very much like modern Finland. Metsänpeitto isn't confined to forests anymore, there's woodland spirits that have adapted to life in cities just the same as pigeons, rabbits and jackdaws that forage their food from city parks and human trash. At one point the characters are in a city and can't find their way, and one of them realises that his cell phone has no connection and half the street signs are all garbled nonsense - shit, they're in spirit cover!
And his companion looks at him like no you idiot, you forgot to pay your phone bill again, and reminds him they're in the south. The signs aren't garbled nonsense, they're in Swedish.

The results are in! Some nice variance: a few dialogue line openings that I admit I really like, some inner contemplation, some scenery being established, even a few lines that throw the reader right into action. Opening line of any work of fiction is always something I try to plan with care, as it is the first thing that will either hook or turn away the reader when it comes to the text itself.

Wait there's inescapable woods in Finnish folklore 👀
Finnish folklore is very like, not here anymore but this is one of the things my mom was able to tell me about (because she was scared when i was running around in the woods and she has some magical thinking & was genuinely scared id dissappear)!!!
Its called metsänpeitto, id translate it to the cover of the forest? Essentially it's almost like dissappearring into the woods INTO A STATE where you can't find your way out. Im trying hard not to use the idea of parallel worlds to describe it bc thats not mentioned anywhere, its moreso called a state/space? But yeah thats the vibe i get. Thats as far as my mom explained, but looking thru some old blogspot articles etc; things might get suddenly absolutely quiet & you might feel out of place/weird in general. It is connected to like, the finnish version of fae, maahiset & forest elves, but its funny to think about the people who used it as an excuse for being late/w/ever. This is a VERY quick summary but i 😭😭 dont have the energy to translate everything rn. Tho was very fun to chat abt this!!! 🥺
Edit: tbh its both interesting (it rly do feel like that in thr woods sometimes) and also funny bc this is prolly just folklore that came up bc ppl were dumbasses getting lost in the woods (reasonable, esp since forests used to be bigger) and blaming it on magic (funny)

In this new series, I explore games that's are coming out soon. This is the first preview aka Let's Play: Demo. In this video, I will be diving in LEMPO. ABOUT THIS GAME: “Sometimes you get truly lost. That's when you call someone, and they send rescue people to get you. But what if they can't find you? What if you are so lost, it is impossible for them to find you. Do you believe in fantasy worlds? I didn't either. Until I found myself in one.” Lempo is a psychological horror game inspired by Finnish mythology in which you play as Paul, your casual 9 to 5 guy, lost in a forest after his day of work. Uncover stories of people who were trapped in Metsänpeitto before. Make use of what little items you come by to find out what’s happening in this eerie place and go back to your peaceful life before this malevolent forest consumes you. Explore Lempo’s forest. Metsänpeitto’s darkness is treacherous, light up your way with a lighter and flashlight to investigate environments filled with items to find and mysteries to unveil... But don’t go too fast or you’ll get lost, use your compass if you ever want to escape this damned forest. You will encounter souls during your journey in Lempo. Follow them! They might show and tell you clues you’re looking for.

Cochicho (Brazilian Portugese)
[koˈʃi.ʃu]
Translation: Whisper
Portuguese is an Indo-European language belonging to the Romance branch originating from Portugal. Due to colonialism it is the main and official language of Brazil, where 213 million of its 264 million speakers live. Brazilian Portuguese is considered a dialect of Portuguese as they are mutually intelligible.
Motivation: It has an onomatopoeic origin, as it sounds like whispering. (easy pronunciation: co-shee-shoo. co as in COlogne, sh as in SHoe, ee as in lEAve, shoo as in CHUte) also it sounds cute and feels nice to say :)
Note: This is the dialectal pronunciation of cochicho, the Portugal version would be [kuˈʃi.ʃu]
