April History

April 4, 1968 - Civil Rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was shot and killed by a sniper in Memphis, Tennessee. As head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he had championed non-violent resistance to end racial oppression and had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He is best remembered for his I Have a Dream speech delivered at the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington. That march and King's other efforts helped the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1986, Congress established the third Monday in January as a national holiday in his honor.

Birthday - American social reformer Dorothea Dix (1802-1887) was born in Hampden, Maine. She founded a home for girls in Boston while only in her teens and later crusaded for humane conditions in jails and insane asylums. During the American Civil War, she was superintendent of women nurses.

Birthday - Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto (1884-1943) was born in Nagaoko, Honshu. He was the main strategist behind the failed Japanese attack on Midway Island in June of 1942, which turned the course of the war against Japan. He was killed on April 18, 1943, after Americans intercepted radio reports of his whereabouts and shot down his plane.

in case y’all were wondering what elements make up the bulk of current-day 80s pastiche imagery, here’s a sampling. the lace, fingerless gloves, and makeup were most notably utilized by Madonna, but all of these elements are borrowed from the ‘new romantic’ movement, which actually got its start in the late 1970s. place of origin, england 🇬🇧

adam and the ants. can you see why they were called ‘romantic’? obviously artists like Madonna and Boy George didn’t look quite as piratical (Madonna also borrowed a lot of her styling from the punk movement), but this is the base idea from which they were drawing. glam rock evolved from this look as well. know anyone else who drew their inspiration from the new romantic make-up look?

truly, truly, truly outrageous!

as for the neon element, people are often thinking of the 80s love for bright colors, stuff that really popped and often clashed or contrasted, as in the 3rd image at the top of the post (design by emmanuel ungaro). remember the 80s was all about opulence and excess: ‘greed is good!’ loud colors that scream ‘look at me!’ is one way fashion reflected that mindset. [not all fashion was loud colors, tho! the 80s also loved pastels and japanese designers like rei kawakubo, yohji yamamoto, and issey miyake utilized muted colors].

as for the geometric shapes and squiggles, this is from a movement called ‘memphis design’ and it truly dominates our imaginations when we think of the 80s and 90s. it was actually a singular group of designers and architects from milan, italy 🇮🇹, but as we well know that aesthetic migrated to textiles as well.

so that’s just a quick rundown of what the fuck you’re looking at when you see something like the ariel doll whose look is ‘80s’. these elements did all exist in the 80s, just...not the way you are seeing on the doll :P
