All right, now that it’s been 4 months and I’ve read all the other things, I realized that it’s, like, 5 days until this book has been out for a year and I should probably get the fuck on with it, so. Here we are.

I’m supposed to protect people, aren’t I?”

I don’t know what hitting rock bottom is supposed to feel like, but fighting over a guy in front of half your apartment complex has to be pretty close. Especially when said guy barely knows you exist. Jonathan doesn’t even notice me smile at him. Instead, he makes a beeline for his precious Jerilene. They think they are so stinking cute, with their matching initials and all. Big deal. Logan and Lakshmi already had the market cornered on that.

Honestly, Circe, what are you doing with your life? Once again, I find myself fighting over a guy who doesn’t want me. Fighting Jerilene over Jonathan is worse than fighting Alanna over Diontray. At least Diontray led me to believe that I had a chance with him. He had no problems woohooing with me behind Alanna’s back. When Alanna confronted us, I was sure he would dump her and confess his love for me. But no, he went chasing after her instead. Even after that humiliation, I held out hope that Diontray would come back to me. When it became apparent Diontray wasn’t coming back and that Jonathan was glued to Jerilene, I started dating Mark.

But I never gave up on Diontray. Even though Mark and I had been together for months, the smallest bit of attention from Diontray at my Graduation party had me back in his arms. I thought this time, this time, he’d finally choose me. Nope. He ran right back to Alanna, Again. And now I’m a two-time cheater.

Mark. Just the thought of his name makes me wince. He could have been devoted to me if I had given him a chance, but the truth is he’s just not exciting. All he’s looking for is someone to birth his hundreds of babies while he plays cops and robbers all day. I’m not about that life. Don’t get me wrong. I do want kids. One or two, three is pushing it, but I know myself well enough to know I don’t want to stay at home with them all day! I want my bakery as much as I want kids. My bakery is practically my kid right now.

I was Mark’s first. Trust me, that boy has a lot to learn, and I don’t have the patience to teach him. I was relieved when he broke up with me. No one knows I cheated on him, so he came off as the bad guy in front of everyone. I felt bad about that until he hooked up with Megan a minute later. She’s welcome to him. Apparently, he’s had a thing for her for a long time, but he never made a move. He was still messed up from Shonice, which obviously I can relate to given how messed up I was from Diontray. I guess I was his Shonice detox diet so that he could be fresh for Megan. I suppose that’s fair given that I did cheat on him. Still, it stings to see how smitten he is with Megan. He never looked at me the way he looks at her. It’s the same way Jonathan looks at Jerilene, and the same way Diontray looks at a mirror.

I’m not going to pine over these stupid boys anymore. I’m seeing AJ now, and he’s a real man. In fact, he might be a bit out of my league. He’s way more experienced in the world than I am, being that he’s nearly thirty while I’m only twenty-one. He is so unconventional that I figured he must have some out there job like Medium or Exorcist. He surprised me when he revealed that he is an OB/Gyn Resident at Sapphire Springs General. He’s been stirring things up with the attending doctors by infusing some Eastern practices into his clinical routine, but he says they all seem impressed with him.

We’ve bonded over our love for baked goods. I blew him away with my cupcakes, and his cheesecake is to die for. It’s almost better than woohoo. Almost. AJ is an amazing baker, but damn, that man’s woohoo skills are on another level. He absolutely needs no teaching.

But can you build a relationship on cheesecake and good times in the sack? I don’t get most of the things he talks about. He’s also quite passive which sometimes makes him hard to read. He didn’t say anything when I cursed out Everson in front of him. Not a frown, not a smile, nothing. His passivity doesn’t appear to come from weakness, though. He seems to have a great deal of inner strength, discipline, and self-control. Watcher knows, I could stand to learn some self-control!

I honestly didn’t expect AJ to ask me out again after the Everson incident. I thought for sure I had scared him way, but he did ask me out again. We’ve gone out on several more dates since then. On our most recent date, he told me he is planning a trip to Takemizu next summer to study acupressure as a means for aiding fertility. My eyes kinda glazed over when he went into the theories behind it, but my ears perked up when he mentioned he would enjoy having me as a travel companion. If we are still seeing each other by then, I will certainly take him up on his offer. It makes me happy to know that he assumes we will still be seeing each other.

AJ didn’t go to college with me, and he doesn’t know any of my classmates, so he is a clean slate, a chance to start over, an opportunity to avoid repeating past mistakes. And as far as I know, I don’t have any competitors for his affection. But if one does show up, maybe I’ll try buying her off instead of fighting her.

AJ is straightforward in telling me how much he enjoys my company. He’s also impressed with my bakery. I believe he is sincere when he compliments me. I don’t think he has a player bone is his body. I’m trying not to get ahead of myself, but I think he has potential. I should look up some stuff about acupressure on the Web, so I can halfway hold a conversation with him on our next date.

Next date. I’m so excited there will be a next date with him. With my bakery getting off the ground and this blossoming relationship with AJ, I’m starting to feel something I haven’t felt in a long time.

This whole arc about Circe and Jerilene’s fight was born from those first two pictures where Circe was thinking about Jonathan. It was perfect that the people she fought with the most (Jerilene, Everson, and Patty) were connected to him.

Diontray really messed with her head, and she was spiraling out of control. Often the thing that pushes us over the edge is something minor, so seeing a happy J&J was the catalyst for her.

I decided to make AJ an OB because I’d like to have some births at a playable hospital. I wish I had made Jonathan an OB instead of a dentist, but he’s committed to dentistry now, so AJ can fulfill the OB role. AJ will become a playable NPC and will move up to playable status if he and Circe get serious. And I really do hope they get serious.

Jack is going to become a playable outright. Unless some other blond dude sweeps Ashanti off her feet, he and Ashanti are end game. He’ll take Jerilene’s place in the Boyd/Vance apartment. We’ll say Mark invited him to move in after having gotten to know him on the police force.

Since Jack and AJ are already established in their careers, I’m making them older than my Gen 1 Sims who are all 21 or 22 right now. Jack has a memory of going to college, and I’m thinking he’s been on the police force for a few years, so I’m placing his age at 26.

AJ is a Resident, which means he would have already completed four years of Undergrad and four years of med school, so I’m placing his age at 28. His being 28 in the year 2003 means he was born the same year I was. ;)

Finally, Circe should have put up some curtains before she got down with AJ in the kitchen! On second thought, she’d probably want Diontray and Mark to see.

The Good Place Season 3 Finale: after-thoughts

*SPOILERS! duh..also it is very long, read at your own discretion*

So, that was a rollercoaster ride of a season. It started with Eleanor finding Chidi, for like the 803rd time, and it ended with Eleanor having to say goodbye to Chidi. After years of getting the soul squad back together, they are all having to face the torments of The Bad Place once again. Can’t they get a break?

Before getting in to Chidi and Eleanor’s storyline, I want to start with Michael, Janet, Tahani, and Jason.

For Michael, he is just the sweetest demon in the entire universe. In the first season, he was not only an evil liar but also hated humans and did not want to do anything else in his immortal life other than to punish the four humans. I do feel bad about the situation with Jason. To be honest, I never really gave much importance to it until the finale. Going in to season 4, I see what the writers did there. They set up this supposedly insane love story between a Floridian DJ and a “Busty Alexa” (Eleanor’s words, not mine) who fell in love hundreds of years ago in literal hell. Now, Janet is going to play a much larger part in the new neighborhood but importantly, she/it is now a human-like member of the Soul Squad and will probably be Eleanor’s source of strength in the upcoming season(s). Woo go Janet!!

Tahani al-Jamil has been through a lot. Just this finale episode alone she was the first to be targeted by the Bad Place and their schemes. It was almost deja vu when she was planning to plant the ‘Marc Fake-obs’ joke on John, but then again, the Good Place reminds us of the evolution each of the characters went on. Though she is a supporting character, I would really like to see her play a bigger part with keeping the integrity of the soul squad together during the upcoming seasons and perhaps find love herself.

I felt kinda sad that Jason Mendoza wasn’t in this episode that much, but his character providing some much-needed comedy relief in all of the heaviness in the finale. I do wonder though why he is back in the monk outfit, maybe to keep him quiet for safety purposes. There must be a secret Schur reason why he is in different garb for this iteration of the Fake Good Place. Like with Janet, I think they are pretty cute together and I need at least some happiness. Also, he is also one of the remaining few to not have an ex or a gossip blogger in the new Good Place yet. It will be interesting to find out. I think it will either be his dad or an ex-dance crew member or even Pillboi.

Okay. Here we go. I just rewatched the episode a few times to not only feel the feels but also to catch any details that the podcast mentioned and I might have forgotten. Without knowing it, the entirety of the show’s plot relies heavily on the unlikely relationship between Chidi Anagonye and Eleanor Shellstrop. Looking back at this season, there were little hints that the writers planted that makes this ever the more heartbreaking.

In 3x08 (Worse Possible Use of Free Will), the entire episode is basically a flashback through cheleanor’s development in Reboot 112, a previously mentioned version in season 2. I was really excited to be fed that day and the subsequent episodes but I just rewatched it again and I noticed that the same type of situation happened again. (yes I know, reboots happen every second in this show) At the end, Eleanor promises Chidi that they will find each other again and that they are true soulmates. Even in the very first episode of season 3, Eleanor comes to Australia to ask Chidi for help to be a better person and the end of season 3, it once again is Eleanor in a doorway meeting Chidi.

A lot of this season had to do with faith and memories. the Janet(s) episode reminded Eleanor, in this case, who she was because she did not remember and Chidi, like the amazing man he is, snapped her back to reality with a kiss and all was well (for a few eps). The sad part is that this time, when Chidi won’t remember Eleanor or any of the gang, Eleanor can’t just kiss him back to reality because he doesn’t even know how much she means to him.

I cry a lot at very emotional things, but this episode was a kicker. It touched a lot of people since 1) the writers are very good and also very cruel, 2) the past few episodes saw a happy cheleanor, and 3) it was all very real in a way. We all have dealt with loss and love. Seeing one person love another and miss another but the partner doesn’t remember is so devastating. In all of the reboots, every one of them forgot everything. The sad thing is only one of them can’t remember the rest and that one is the moral glue that held all of the squad together. And looping back to a previous episode when Eleanor is crying and talking about how she is both happy and sad, she mentions something about love isn’t a sure thing and now, that love that she has been so afraid to give for the longest time was ripped away from her and now she has to watch and take care of the man she loves from a distance.

Going in to season 4, we are steering less towards philosophy and hard factual morals but rather towards the pathos side of things. What it means to be a human in the face of adversity and tragedy is the theme for upcoming seasons. I do hope the slow burn of Chidi finding Eleanor again is not so slow because they truly deserve to be happy in the little dot on top of the ‘i’. I also wish for less reboots now and tears because I never expected a comedy show that makes fart and sex jokes and puns all the time to make me sob over fictional characters but here I am and I don’t regret it.

Gah this whole episode was all too much. The memory video was touching and also very soft. The line that made me bawl was when Chidi said “I am gonna miss you” and his voice cracks, then Eleanor responds “but you won’t” and then “Bye, Chidi”. I felt that. To end, I just want to say thank you to Michael Schur, Megan Amram, and Jen Statsky for this episode and the entire crew for this crazy, funny, smart, and now very sad show that never fails to make my day. Also lots of hugs to Jameela, Manny, D’Arcy, Ted, and most especially Kristen and Will for gracing our screens. Christian Right Claims to be ‘Above Politics’ Are Unbelievable | Religion Dispatches

Have you ever noticed that for hardline ideologues, only their opponents are “doing politics,” while they are simply “being objective”? In my last piece for RD I looked at the related ways in which even overtly political evangelicals often connect the notion of “the biblical worldview” to their political vision. For example, Tony Perkins, head of the anti-LGBTQ Family Research Council, claims that if churches played down politics and simply instructed their congregants “better” in matters of theology, right-wing politics would naturally follow. What I also initially wanted to address in that piece but ultimately had to leave out is how claims that an action or belief is entirely “apolitical” can serve the same ends.

To take a recent example from the current news cycle, witness racist Fox News host Tucker Carlson lambasting those who correctly draw connections between climate change and the massive fires here in the American West that continue to rage: “It took no time at all for the usual vultures and parasites to swoop in and try to make a political advantage.” Clearly, Carlson wants viewers to believe that he is not playing politics with his climate change denialism. No, you see, only their concerns are politics; our concern is truth.

It is thanks in large part to the often subtle but powerful influence of the dominionist ideology known as Christian Reconstructionism that the conservative, mostly white evangelical subculture has come to place so much emphasis on an all-encompassing Christian or “biblical” worldview as a source for “correct” action in every sphere of life. No one has done more to uncover and unpack this influence than University of North Florida Religious Studies Professor Julie Ingersoll, whose work carefully examines the ludicrous claims of Christian Reconstructionists that their drive for “dominion” is apolitical. Asked to comment for this piece, Ingersoll said:

“Christian Reconstructionists assert that God has delegated earthly authority to three institutions: the church, the family, and the civil government. For them, ‘politics’ pertains only to the realm of the civil government, while most aspects of life fall under the authority of the family. So, health care, reproductive rights, issues related to economics and property, etc., are all non-political.”

She added that Christian Reconstructionists consider all three of these “spheres” of authority to be “still accountable to God, so even the political, in their very limited usage, is religious.” Given the influence of this worldview on mainstream evangelicals it seems likely that there are echoes of this thinking in their claims to be apolitical even as they seek to impose their authority in such matters.

In any case, whether in more or less secular or overtly religious form, the rhetorical trick of grasping moral authority by claiming to be outside of or ‘above’ politics—as if any such thing were possible with respect to social issues and their accompanying human conflicts—works depressingly well for America’s right-wingers, who understand that many Americans will accept the claim. Further, in both its secular and religious incarnations, this type of rhetorical power play serves to uphold white supremacism.

While I am inclined to agree with Megan Goodwin’s claim that religion has “always been politics, full stop,” unfortunately, many otherwise savvy journalists and commentators forget that “the personal is political” when it comes to religion. They seem to sign on to a tacit agreement that anything Christians label “religious belief” shouldn’t be examined or criticized, regardless of the impact powerful conservative Christians’ politics have on those who don’t share conservative Christian beliefs. This is often accompanied by the nonsensical positing of a clear division between religion and politics that allows conservative Christians’ claims to be above politics to go essentially unchallenged, thus reinforcing the (white Protestant inflected) Christian supremacism that pervades American society.

Notice, for example, how the New York Times’ Elizabeth Dias leaves unquestioned a claim that Christianity Today, the flagship “respectable” evangelical magazine, “is very apolitical,” despite its frequent discussion of such things as Supreme Court decisions, “religious freedom,” and other matters of concern to social conservatives.

The spread of campaign-style “Jesus 2020” yard signs around the country, which prompted me to think about this issue in this moment, might seem at first blush like a frivolous thing to pay attention to. But when such actions go viral, how we frame them matters. And in any case, the framing provided by Joyce Hubbard, a member of Sampey Memorial Baptist Church in Ramer, Alabama, who helped conceive the initiative with other women from her church, neatly illustrates how a claim to be promoting “apolitical” religion can function as a shrewd political move. By the same token, the way journalist Greg Garrison framed his write-up of the story for Al.com provides a neat illustration of how the media normalizes Christian supremacism and evangelical extremism by failing to unpack evangelical rhetoric.

Instead, Garrison gives us only the hometown church’s celebratory perspective, leaving it to us to read between the lines of Hubbard’s rhetoric—or not.

And what does Hubbard have to say about the “Jesus 2020” signs? Firstly, that “We don’t see Jesus’ name out there,” a claim that anyone who has ever looked at billboards while driving through the South or the rural Midwest can immediately confirm is patently false. Hell, even here, in and around “secular” Portland, Oregon, I’m regularly bombarded with obnoxious billboard evangelism.

Yet Hubbard still states, presumably without irony, “We’re trying to put Jesus out there so that people can see his name,” as if seeing Jesus’s name is not an everyday occurrence for, well, every American who doesn’t live under a rock. This disconnect from reality would seem to belie an insecurity related to white evangelicals’ persecution complex.

Meanwhile, Hubbard claims, “We want people to elect Jesus leader in their life. It’s not political, not denominational, we’re not trying to sway anyone’s votes.” But she also states, “We all have our personal beliefs and moral issues we’re standing for,” and adds, “Jesus is here for all the sinners.”

Her statement about “personal beliefs and moral issues” is an example of a kind of convenient deliberate vagueness that’s become common among “respectable” evangelicals, but to anyone intimately familiar with white evangelical subculture, in context it’s instantly recognizable as a dog whistle gesturing toward anti-LGBTQ and anti-abortion stances.

Meanwhile, the statement “Jesus is here for all the sinners” represents a faux-inclusive stance of the sort called out by Church Clarity, an organization that calls on churches to be unambiguous regarding whether or not they view LGBTQ identities as inherently sinful. In addition, in a pluralist society marked by Christian hegemony, “electing Jesus” can hardly be regarded as an apolitical statement by the non-religious and members of minority religions.

Any reporter who truly wanted to know how “apolitical” Sampey Memorial Baptist is should have pressed Hubbard for her and her church’s stance on abortion, LGBTQ acceptance, and religious freedom for atheists and members of minority religions. Instead, Garrison published a puff piece apparently based on a softball interview, which is an unfortunate pattern in religion journalism.

So what of Hubbard’s claim that her initiative is not meant to sway votes? Well, perhaps there’s no need to try to influence votes directly if, as discussed above, one believes that a “Christian worldview” will automatically lead to “correct politics.” Indeed, some of Hubbard’s other statements give away the game. “There are a lot of things in the world that are disheartening. We know that Jesus is the answer. He can solve everything.”

Hubbard says the members of her church are “praying for a revival in this country.” This is another obvious Christian nationalist dog whistle to those of us who were taught in our families, churches, homeschooling curricula, and/or Christian schools that for the nation to be blessed, we must be obedient to God, which, in this context, means banning abortion, putting officially sanctioned prayer back in public schools, and keeping LGBTQ folks from having equal rights.

At the end of the day, a flood of “Jesus 2020” yard signs is far from the worst thing Americans will face in the current election cycle. But to allow such an obvious expression of Christian supremacism to be painted as “apolitical” plays right into the hands of those who want an authoritarian version of Christianity to dominate every aspect of American life.

“There’s a fine line physicians are walking between trying to get a message out that will appeal to this younger generation without being inappropriate or unprofessional,” Dr. Baldwin said. “Because of the short content and musical aspect of TikTok, what adolescents are latching onto is not the professional persona we typically put out there.”

A spate of recent TikToks have further stirred questions about the potential for the app’s abuse. One recent TikTok post featured a medical professional speculating — as she lip synced to the Rex Orange County lyric “How Could I Ignore You?” — that her patient’s chest pain could have been caused by cocaine. Another showed an emergency room doctor mocking patients who sought treatment in the E.R. rather than from a primary care physician.

Sarah Mojarad, a lecturer who teaches a course on social media for scientists at the University of Southern California, said she has seen physicians either “bashing their patients” on the app or “whitecoat marketing,” a term that refers to the use of medical prestige to market inappropriate products like unauthorized supplements.

The youth of TikTok’s audience also raises the stakes when medical professionals misuse the platform.

“With a young audience, it’s really important to make sure that the content getting out is professional and accurate,” Ms. Mojarad said. “People may think some of it is medical humor, but it impacts care.”

TikTok’s community guidelines state that the platform does not permit “misinformation that may cause harm to an individual’s health, such as misleading information about medical treatments.” The company expanded its rules of conduct earlier this month, as its user base has grown.

Some physicians worry that TikTok’s brief, playful clips can blur the line between general education and patient-specific medical advice.

Dr. Austin Chiang, a gastroenterologist and chief medical social media officer at Jefferson Health in Philadelphia, said he has been asked about specific symptoms on TikTok and has to refer users to established medical sources, or directly to their doctors.

Dr. Christian Assad, a cardiologist in McAllen, Tex., said he sometimes scripts his TikToks, given the potential for confusion when he compresses a 60-minute talk on low-carbohydrate dieting into a 60-second musical clip.

Ignoring the platform isn’t an option, especially given the prevalence of disinformation on the app, Dr. Chiang said. Two of his more popular posts have countered the use of essential oils to cure diseases and exposed the failings of the celery juice fad diet.

“If we’re not there to be a voice for evidence-based medicine, who’s going to do that for us?” Dr. Chiang said. “Anti-vaxxers are already using social media to their advantage. By putting doctors on social media, we’re able to be a source of more accurate information.”

Still, for doctors turned influencers, the TikTok learning curve can be steep. Dr. Matthew Schulman, a plastic surgeon in New York, said the slightly older users of Instagram and Snapchat have been vital to his private practice, helping to drive roughly 80 percent of consultations. He often streams live from the operating room. “Buttock augmentation is really popular on social media,” he said.

But TikTok has presented him with cause for additional concern. The virality upside is massive: A post he made earlier this month discussing celebrity clients drew over 6.8 million views. But as he has watched his 10-year-old daughter use the app, he realized that he must exercise more caution in producing content.

“The demographic of TikTok is very young, and as a plastic surgeon I don’t feel comfortable marketing my services to children,” Dr. Schulman said. Simultaneously, he knows the app is growing fast. “I don’t want to be caught playing catch-up. In two or three years the platform could change, and if I already have an established account I’m ahead of the game.”

In the meantime, he said, he relies on top-notch TikTok editors — his kids.

Urban Meyer

This weekend was delightful. My husband and I got to spend time with our Godchildren. My husband actually carried our Goddaughter when their parents thrust her unexpectedly into his arms. During this long journey, I have never seen my husband hold a child. Whenever we see friends with kids, they immediately give the baby to me for “practice”. Even at the baby classes we have taken, my husband has not held the doll. I think he needs the practice. Seeing him carrying Megan brought a smile to my face. He had no idea what he was doing and yet Meg was perfectly happy crunched awkwardly in his arms as we walked. It was like he was carrying a 2 x 4 horizontally across his chest. I turned around and my husband was pointing out squirrels and churches and talking to Megan. It kinda’ melted my heart and yet it was hot at the same time. I have always known my husband will be a great father. We have been through a lot of things together and he has always impressed me. However, seeing him holding a child, smiling and talking to her was just, in the words of my late mother, darling.

On Sunday, my husband and I went to lunch. It did not occur to me until this morning that we had lunch yesterday at the same restaurant where the miscarriage started. I think that is a good thing that I forgot about that. It gives me confidence in going to my ob’s office today. Hopefully, seeing tons of pregnant women will not bother me either. In other words, I think we are doing fine and ready to start this journey again. Or maybe this good mood is in part to the fact that football season is about to be under way? My toes are painted Scarlet and I am ready to go. OH!

IO! I digress. At lunch yesterday, I told my husband that I would like to go ahead and narrow down baby names. My husband said, “Whoa. You are jumping the gun.” As you all know, we have been waiting nine (9) years to discuss baby names. As a woman, I can remember discussing what to name our children at slumber parties. I want to visualize and name a child. It is like in that movie “The Sweetest Thing” when Cameron Diaz says the name of the boy she likes (Peter) to her friend. Her friend says, “You named the puppy!” I need to name the puppy and not worry about people knowing I want and love the puppy even if things don’t work out. I have to do the opposite (see prior post) and discuss baby names. In order to get my husband on board, I told him that if he doesn’t want to discuss names, the baby would be named Urban Meyer. As a UGA man and active Gator hater, that got his attention. My husband replied, “If you pull that bs, I am renaming the child Bo Schembechler when you take a nap and swaddling him/her in blue and gold.” Ah-hah. I found my husband’s currency to discuss baby names. Everyone hasa currency. My husband’s is college football.

We have three names we like for a boy. My husband vetoed my favorite name of all (no, it was not Tressel). They are standard names – nothing unusual that will make headlines. There will be no Jermajesty, no Moses, no Pilot Inspecktor. If it is a girl, we are in big trouble. My husband only likes three (3) girl names. Although they are all lovely, nothing is screaming at me. Ladies, you know what I am talking about, yes? Nothing has “hit” me when it comes to girl names. I like old school female names. Really old school. I like to think of my daughter’s name when she is a grandmother or Nana. I just cannot imagine a grandmother named something hip and popular. He likes the girl and boy names on the most popular names list. He likes names, in the words of “Christian”, that are vanilla.

Nothing is wrong with vanilla. I like vanilla. Vanilla is very popular. I just don’t want our daughter, for some reason, to be 1 of 15 with the same name in her class.

Back in my day, the most popular girl names were Jennifer, Michelle, Lisa, Kristin, etc. Back in my grandparents’ day, the popular girl names were Mildred, Gertrude, Edna, Dorothy. You never hear those baby names anymore. I would also like to incorporate a bit of meaning into the name. For the boy name, I have expressed the name I want and why. I did not get a grunt or a rolling of the eyes from across the table at lunch, so I think we are making progress. We also have variations on middle names and a few possible other names. When I suggest girl names, I get “That is a stripper’s name” or “Your names are weird. You are killing me.” I read the entire book last night of 10,000 baby names and every single female name I threw out was met with a boisterous veto. My husband is set with the three girl names he likes. Period. Hmmmm. What am I to do? Throw his names plus one into a hat and hope for the best?

So maybe I am jumping the gun, but this is a fun battle. The battle of baby names. It kind of makes me giggle. I am so happy to finally discuss baby names. Do we have a baby yet? No. We have a few battles ahead of us, but I want to remain optimistic. Laughing is healthy and we are having some fun with this. I think that the fun can absolutely be lost in the fertility struggle and maybe it is an imperative part of the process. Is laughter really the best medicine? I guess we will find out…

Megan Reads Oathbringer (part last)

I said I’d finish this book before it had been out for a full year, and that’s the 14th, iirc, so I have tonight and tomorrow, but I will finish this book tonight if it kills me, I s2g, I’m ready to be done.

Part 13 encompasses pages 1054-1233 (previous parts)

WE ARE SO CLOSE, GUYS

OH, I wanted to talk a lil bit about the end of part 4, now that I’ve had a sleep and some time to think about it. I still don’t really like it, but I think I can better articulate why.

I feel like a LOT of it is personal preference for Really Not Liking It when my Heroes Turn Out to Have Been Bad Guys All Along. that’s. not fun for me. I don’t find it appealing in any way.

and I know that Brandon is a big fan of his lil ~Sanderlanches~ of emotion, but tbf I think the Recreance bombshell got a little lost in Taravangian’s deluge of bad news. The major impact of that reveal SHOULD have been--yeah, the humans are and have been the aggressors all along. But instead it gets a little undermined and rolled up wholesale into Dalinar Has Been a Bad Before and We Guess He Is Now Too. It feels like it should have been a separate moment for everyone--for ALL the monarchs in the coalition--to realize that...THEY are ALL the bad guys. All of humanity is the bad guys. But it gets overshadowed by their belief that Dalinar has betrayed them and gets dumped squarely on his shoulders so that it’s less about Humanity and more about One Human--who has been our hero for 3,000 pages and now just utterly crashed which is ALREADY upsetting enough without everyone else ignoring THEIR part in it all.

So what I’m saying is that I still feel like the end of part 4 was really badly handled as there should have been two, separate focal moments that got overlapped badly (worldbuilding vs character moments). But I’ve talked to Lisa and Alyx about stuff and I’m a lot chiller with the actual CONTENT of the reveal, and actually looking forward to seeing how that plays out.

tl; dr: feeling better about the content, still very unhappy with the execution.

Here’s the thing--the Recreance reveal doesn’t really change anything. The human heroes are still going to choose the options that are “good” or “right”--Dalinar was already suing for peace, Kaladin was already making friends with the listeners--so saying “these humans in the past were evil” doesn’t change their choices. It doesn’t change the Fused’s choices either--saying “these guys were good in the past” doesn’t make them good guys now--OBVIOUSLY, just look at that dialogue.

So why bother?

The whole series is about choosing to be better, to do better, but the characters were ALREADY DOING THAT, they didn’t need an extra, super depressing motivator to do that. It’s just there to....reinforce the idea? That’s already pretty solid?

Defo not my favorite, but it did pick up at the end there. Part 3 was A TRIP that I enjoyed and I’m still pumped that Bridge Four got 1. POVs and 2. SPREN that was really nice. I’m ~*~GARBAGE~*~ and there was some good garbage Moash content, so I loved that. The roadtrip was Sure A Thing. I love my sunshine boy, Adolin Kholin with all my heart. Aaaaand I’ll circle back to Part 4 and the beginning of Part 5 when it’s NOT 4am!
