I see a lot of discourse about what is or isn't allowed to be called body horror. It's a topic that is very close to home for a lot of people, namely, in the disabled community. Abled people will often tag things relating to disability as body horror, and that's understandably very upsetting when it relates to something that is someone's normal.
But on the other hand, I have also seen a lot of people, perhaps overzealous disability allies, or perhaps even overly sensitive disabled people, who more or less call for the complete removal of the term.
The term body horror exists for a reason
Not only is it useful in discussing the contents of something, but it serves as a pretty common and necessary trigger warning.
The question of what is or isn't allowed to be called body horror really comes down to
A) Extremity
And
B) Context
The term and trigger tag exist to shield people from content that is psychologically disturbing or triggering to them. You cannot simply divide the Okay uses and Not Okay uses by saying "if it's a medical condition, you can't call it body horror"
Extreme medical conditions involving missing body parts, prosthetics, visible transplants, extreme scarring, and so on can be triggering to a lot of people - and not just abled people who are bothered by disability in general.
These things can also be triggering to other disabled people, especially those who associate certain medical conditions, situations, treatments, etc with their own medical abuse.
Now, the most important fucking part of whether something can be called body horror or not is CONTEXT
If someone is talking about a video game, such as the new Legend of Zelda game, and giving warning to other people about an opening scene focused on nonconsensual grafting of a new arm while Link is completely unconscious, the use of the term body horror can absolutely apply. It is related to the body, and the situation is horrifying. Someone who is sensitive to body horror needs to be warned about the topic.
A photo of someone who only has one arm is not body horror.
You do not tag someone's fucking selfie as body horror, so help me god. If there is a visible prosthesis or it's a closeup of where their stump had been scarred closed, it's appropriate to tag those as Prosthesis, Prosthetic, Scarring, Scars, or Medical. If people are sensitive to these specific things, they can blacklist them.
Are we getting it?
Say it with me:
Body horror is a topic or genre.
Body horror is not a real life person.
A real life person comes with useable descriptors, and none of them include "body horror"
Fantasy genres and topics and situations, including medical subjects, can be called body horror. The term "body horror" is used to describe the topic or genre, not the character in the fantasy setting. If someone violently loses a limb in a game or TV show, them being an amputee is not body horror. It's the violent loss of the limb that's body horror. Please, go ahead and ask anyone who violently lost a limb if the situation that led to amputation was flowery and comfortable for them. I really, really doubt it.
In fact, I would hazard a guess that someone who lost a leg to a car accident may actually be very triggered by witnessing that happening on TV. Just a guess.
And on the topic of ableism, some of you abled people have no fucking idea the kind of shit disabled people go through on a regular basis and your ignorance is genuinely embarrassing to read, so please spare us all and keep your mouth shut about whether you think someone's medical trigger is acceptable to you or not.

SEMI-FINALS POLL 2
28. Lady (She/Her) @forkdork
Lady is a cold-hearted scientist who would do anything in the name of science even if she has to commit horrible actions. After all, in the end, this is for the better of the world even if she has the break a few hundred eggs to get the results she wants. Who else would sacrifice the things she has to get to this point? Who would go to such extremes to the point of the only thing you have left is your work and your name? Well. Lady would even from a young age this was the case her whole life pretty much leading her to the point she is now. Her twin sister didn’t even get in the way of her goals. Being one of the first to figure out how to use science to manipulate magic due to this headset of hers
This pretty much led Lady to be ‘respected’ or feared more then anything in her workplace with the actions she has committed. Lady being responsible for hundreds of documents, subjects, and scientific discoveries to be made. While also being responsible for hundreds of families to be torn apart.. Lives to be lost… people being driven insane due to her experiments… Obviously, this has bitten Lady in the ass many MANY times. With subjects escaping and attacking her when they get the chance, but of course, they never go far and just end back in Lady’s grasp.

3. Gordon, Fritz, and Fresco (He/Him for all 3) @subparticlesupercollider
Fresco is a chemistry professor at [REDACTED] University and Gordon is his TA. Fritz is a student at the university who has a big crush on Gordon <3 all three end up studying reanimation together until one day Fresco literally explodes and becomes an undead creature (hence why he’s just a brain with eyes and a skeleton) and then later Gordon has to get reanimated (long story) and becomes a Frankenstein-esque undead creature as well. Fritz is ok though.

Black Manta Doodle bc I kind of like the backstory where he is autistic and the trauma of medical abuse to 'cure' him set him down the dark spiral of becoming a supervillain. I know it's been handled poorly in some comics and disabled villain characters are often hit or miss, but I got a feeling that he could portay autistic trauma, grief and wrath beautifully if done right. Plus it means he's a hero in earth-3

Question just for safety's sake, because something made me a bit uncomfy: is this blog pro-psychiatry? Like, do you believe psychiatric survivors who are anti-psychiatry to be "anti-science"?
Sorry I took forever to answer this, but it’s a question that deserves a real and nuanced answer so I wanted to wait and think it over. So, the short answer is yes, I am tentatively pro psychiatry, as the field has helped me immensely and I believe that it has the potential to help many people. However, I’m not naive enough to just declare the field an unproblematic total good, as it has a history that continues to this day of causing harm and I believe that massive changes need to be made to all parts of the field in order to protect patients and truly allow the field to be an uncomplicated goods. I think it’s important to listen to all survivors of medical abuse, especially psychiatric survivors, and I don’t consider psychiatric survivors that are anti psychiatry to be anti science. However, I don’t necessarily agree with them, as I believe that being anti psychiatry as a whole is the best way to go about fixing things.

"be gay, do crime"
better if was use for question what consider 'crime' n why
n question why even 'bad crime stuff' still get done by police n politician (enforce law)
so who actual get punish n dehumanize
n why steal grocery, do drugs while poor, loitering, being homeless
n why direct "violent crimes" of circumstance
get treat worse and become sensationalize stigma in public news n always talk about as make people "hoodlums" n "dirty"...
more than violence people in power have that can kill people other way
(example "in power" crime: medical abuse, make exist as marginalize illegal in law, dumping waste in poor n black n native community, unethical work condition, hate crimes, ...a lot lot more list)

lmao this post is so fucking wild. you assume that we don’t also have difficulty accessing healthcare/psychiatric care? that we also don’t have medical trauma??
like as someone with medical trauma from the psychiatric system, getting help is VERY necessary. it could take weeks, months, or years to find a good therapist, but people who actually find help that works wind up being in much better positions mentally than people who intentionally avoid it for whatever reason.
therapy is inaccessible to me as well due to still living in an abusive environment. when i had it, i was severely abused and neglected, including medical malpractice. but i still advocate for it and think that it’s something everyone (not just mentally ill people) should have access to.

So, it feels like my physical therapy isn't really helping, and my father said if it doesn't help I may need to get surgery on my knee.
My sister and I told him my knee is permanently messed up but he wouldn't hear it, and he said if the doctor recommended it I would get the surgery. Like dude I'm 17, and that's a decently large surgery, shouldn't I decide if I get it or not when the time comes??
This is one reason why I hate him, he just decides shit over my head and I'm fucking 17, I'm old enough to make decisions for myself.
It's just so frustrating, and he definitely made it seem like he'd force me to get it if the PT doesn't work, I really want to hit him as hard as I can.
Hi!
I'm sorry to hear PT isn't helping with the pain :(
I'm not a doctor, and I of course think that you should take your doctor's advice into account. However, as you said here, you should get to decide what happens to your body. You have a right to bodily autonomy and you have every right to not want to get surgery if you don't want to. And from what I've heard, knee surgeries have a pretty large regret rate, though please don't take my word on that.
Ultimately, your options with regards to your pain should be an issue for you and your doctor to discuss. Of course, your parents will have to be involved in your decisions until you're a legal adult, but they could be involved without overstepping your wishes, concerns, and boundaries, if they wanted to. It seems like your father just doesn't want to.
If you're nearing 18 (and 18 is the age of legal adulthood where you live), is there any chance that you can hold this off until then so that he loses the power to make medical decisions for you? Is that an option?
Sending all my support your way ❤️

Hi! I’ve seen a lot of people being up sex based oppression and I wasn’t sure what that meant? I was wondering if intersexism is a form of sex based oppression?
This is a hard one to answer, and mainly because I see the use of sex-based oppression to exclude certain groups of people (mainly transmisogyny affected people) and I don’t like the association with that, but the idea that sexual autonomy is targeted is true for most people I would say.
I think the term sex-based oppression is too broad, I think we are better off talking about eugenics regarding bodies outside of the sexual norm, the repression of sexuality, misinformation/little to no information about our different sexual/reproductive anatomies, information being withheld from us about our sexual and otherwise physical health, conversion therapy/forced surgery, etc.
And intersex oppression in the end is more than just sex; it’s cultural as well since there are cultures that are or have been inclusive of intersex people, so I would say ethnocentrism has a role to play too.
I honestly do not think people are ready to have a conversation about intersex oppression outside of intersex circles, but I will say that I think we can’t separate being intersex from the rest of our body and lives, and instead of focusing on sex ONLY we should be looking at this from a disability framework that is inclusive of cultural/social understanding of disability.
TLDR: I do not think “sex-based” is accurate enough to encompass intersex oppression because it separates the body from cultural context/side of oppression, and we should be able to say that intersex identity is rooted in the body while understanding that our experiences do not end with the body.
There is basically no part of the body/person that is not targeted when culturally everyone is forced to confirm to being able-bodied and cis/heterosexual due to colonialism and capitalism, sex-based is not a good enough term to describe that.

i hate the psyc industry and i want to kill that fucking doctor who didn't give enough of a shit to not throw my friend and sister-in-law into invol inpatient. things are looking up rn, and it will probably be resolved by tomorrow, but it was a stark reminder of how the way mentally ill people are treated here can be completely fucked up by one fuckwad who doesn't care. she deserves better, everyone whose been ignored and abused by these systems deserves better, capitalism needs to die right fucking now and all of the bigoted systems that are cozy with it.

ROUND 3 POLL 3
8. Valentine Everett (He/Him) @furbyskinlobotomy
This man has slowly become immortal by turning evil rocks into evil goo and becoming one with the evil goo, and is now plagued by an evil goo ghost. he may have conducted some unethical experiments regarding evil rock chemistry but it's fine because he's gay and trans. I will defend this man and his crimes until I die.

Actually lol I think disabled people who've been abused/neglected by doctors/nurses should be allowed to be as pissed as they want about it and people who berate them for not understanding how hard being a doctor/nurse is or some such should literally shut the hell up. There is nothing immoral about being angry, especially about shit like this and if you think disabled people don't understand how hard capitalist systems can wear you down, well, you're not just mistaken but ignorant as fuck.

Please in no way shape or form feel obligated to answer this but since I so rarely hear about MEDICAL abuse as opposed to, ya know, the more traditional verbal/physical type (tho I think that they often go hand-in-hand) and I want to compare experiences. Was your mom "always" alternative for EVERYONE or did she make exceptions for herself? For example my mom never got me vaccinated and, like yours, withheld all sorts of medication under the guise of "protecting" me but when she got diagnosed with a chronic illness she started taking whatever the doctors gave her under excuses of her pain being "unbearable" or HER doctor not being a quack like the others, etc. Honestly it's been 4 years since I've had any contact with my mom but what makes me the maddest looking back was her hypocrisy.
my mom is on the opposite end of the spectrum in that regard. she categorically refuses to participate in any medical treatment that conflicts with her personal principles, and claimed she would kill herself if she was faced with no choice but to be vaccinated during covid (needless to say i haven't told her i'm fully vaxxed), and i believe her, because once when she had a fever so high her body seized up and she went into shock she refused to let us take her to hospital and told me she'd never forgive me if i dialled for a doctor. the whole experience needless to say didn't make me trust her opinion more, and i'm aware of how ableist and dangerous her "if your body isn't strong enough to deal with its health issues naturally it's because you're doing something wrong" stance is. i'm really sorry your mom is such a hypocrite though, that's hellishly infuriating.
