Ghost [Iwaizumi Hajime x Reader]

I'm searching for something that I can't reach

It hurt to know you left all of this behind despite what we had for so long. It might not have been perfect, but I felt safe… I felt wanted, and I know you did too, so what changed? Why are you not here beside me, reminiscing on the good things in between the clutches of our love.

We were friends during grade school, but we separated during middle school, only to be reunited once again in high school. Even with sweat running down your forehead and little bruises and cuts from volleyball, you were the epitome of perfection to me many years later. My love for you never disappeared. The first time we talked again, you were out with Oikawa. You had swapped our usual school uniform for a dark blue jacket unzipped, a blue and green flannel around your waist, black skinny jeans and casual sneakers. The closer we stood on that packed train platform, the more intoxicating the lingering smell of raspberry-flavoured nicotine on your jacket felt.

That’s when I knew you had changed from the little boy I used to chase around the park. We were always chasing after each other weren’t we? Since then, I seemed to favour that jacket more, albeit hard to compare, especially when you loved to disobey the dress code and leave a few buttons of your uniform shirt undone and untucked after gym class. I like the sad eyes, bad guys Mouth full of white lies There were times where you were desperate to keep up your façade as the stone-hard ace of Seijoh that even when you stared deep into my own eyes with all colours of the truth, your words were an entirely different thing; contradiction. “I was busy,” you would gruffly mutter but when I looked into your eyes and at your tired posture, all I could see was the measure of just how much you missed me.

Or my least favourite, “I’m not in love, this is just a… temporary situation.”

It’s okay though, I understood why you said what you said. It hurt a little, but that wasn’t what drew us apart. Those were just things you said to keep yourself levelled on whatever court you had found yourself in with me.

Kiss me in the corridor But quick to tell me goodbye It was an accident, a foolish one you thought. In the heat of the moment, you had let your guard down but it was not between us. The second time you kissed me, it accidentally occurred in the hallway at school right at the bell. We were so engrossed in the quick exchange that we had not taken notice of the students leaving their classrooms, and just about everyone slowed down to whisper as they gawked, appalled that the Iwaizumi Hajime of Seijoh’s famous volleyball team was kissing someone in public.

You pulled away as quickly as you could, muttering a quick curse under your breath as you bid your goodbye and scurried off, arms tensed and your shoulders squared. Were you perhaps embarrassed to be seen in a vulnerable light of love or was I just not someone suited to be at your side?

There was nothing I hated more than hearing you put yourself down. Utterances of foolish words that downplayed the amazing person you were in my eyes. Oh how to convey such adoration to you with you sending you running for the hills. It was always about you doing better or comparing yourself to others. The worst of it was having you tell me that I could be doing better, that I should find someone worth my time. Of all those considerations, you never once sought to understand just how much I loved you. No matter how far you tried to push me away, I would always come running back, arms open and ready to embrace you with all that I got because fuck, I have it bad for you. I have it so, so, so bad. I want to be part of the reason you smile, I want to be someone you feel comfortable with. Whether you just passed your tests or had a rough day at practice, I wanted to be there... for you.

I needed you there.

But when it came down to the worst of the dog days, I couldn’t help but yell. I couldn’t help that I felt so lonely as you slowly picked up after yourself and retreated closer to my door. I never wanted you to leave, especially when things got complicated because I wanted to work things out.

Then those occurrences happened more often, and so did our arguments, and I soon realized I didn’t want to try so hard to make your stay. It never worked the first hundred times, why would it now?

My love, I miss you. I am alone and I know you are too, so where are you?

Where'd you go? I can't find you in the body sleeping next to me

We are so far from having that second chance, but a part of me wants to try again. Just one more time—I want to feel you one more time.
