Blinding Lights [Itadori Yuji x Reader]
Dedicating this piece as a Valentines gift to my bean, Adri. Love ya xoxo Track ID: Blinding Lights (X Ambassador Cover)
Tumblr media
I'm running out of time 'Cause I can see the sun light up the sky So I hit the road in overdrive, baby, oh
Time seemed painstakingly slow, each tick of the clock above the chalkboard seemed to mock you with each move of its long arm. Your eyes burned unfocused holes at the dusty streaks your teacher had scrawled onto the green board.
Valentine’s Day was this weekend, the buzz around school created this aura of chaos that both disgusted you and made you melancholic at the same time. The power of love, they say… You couldn’t be bothered by the pressure everyone else seemed to feel about both giving and receiving sweets. Valentine’s was a day for the girls to confess their love and to give something to the guy they liked or were in a relationship with, while White Day was the opposite way around.
Hiding behind your textbook, you thumbed through your messages, trying to find Itadori’s contact. It’s been a year since Itadori transferred to some technical college up in the mountains, something about wanting to be a monk? All of it seems so incredulous to you, but you also didn’t feel like questioning him, especially not when the transfer came after his grandfather had passed away and his club-mates were injured in some freak accident.
“[Y/L/N], would you like to read the next paragraph to the class?”
Your teacher’s sudden voice startled you out of your thoughts, your fingers skillfully tucked the phone into the sleeves of your uniformed cardigan.
You offered your teacher a nod, taking a quick glance at the board properly to see where you were supposed to start. With an awkward cough, you started to read the passage out loud. The thought of Itadori escaped your mind.
By the time you finished the passage, the school day ended with a long chime. Your teacher thanked the class and everyone started to help with after school clean-up. You quietly cleaned up with your classmates, a few leaving for their clubs. With it still being winter, the sun started to set, casting a dull orange glow through the clouds.
One of your classmates shouted from across the room, “Oi, [Y/L/N]-chan, are you making any chocolates for someone this year?”
With a chagrined smile, you rolled your eyes at his antics.
“Anyone but you, Tomoyo-san,” you mocked, pulling at one side of your cheek and sticking your tongue out at him.
His friends all hooted with laughter, “See, even [Y/L/N]-chan doesn’t want you.”
You rolled your eyes at the argument that Tomoyo started, embarrassed at the not-so-subtle rejection.
You weren’t even sure if you’d be able to give any chocolates to Itadori this year anyways—right you hadn’t texted him yet. You finished wiping down the last desk, sticking the rag in the bucket one of your other classmates had prepared.
“I got some errands to run for my mom, if you guys don’t mind, I’ll take the trash on my way out,” you offered, pointing to the two bags Tomoya had actually managed to tie correctly this time.
Your class president gave you a nod, bidding you a gentle goodbye and Happy Valentine’s. You gave her a half-hearted smile and wished everyone a good weekend as you grabbed the bags on your way out.
The city's cold and empty (oh) No one's around to judge me (oh) I can't see clearly when you're gone
Your mother didn’t need groceries, she wasn’t going to even be home this weekend. Her new boyfriend offered to take her out to an onsen out in Ehime prefecture. He had offered to take you too, something her previous boyfriends never did, but the last thing you wanted to do was third-wheel out in the middle of nowhere to go.
You spent the remainder of the night studying at a cafe and then grabbed yourself some dinner at a little sushi nook in the city. The waitress dropped off your order at your table, leaving you to your date with your cell phone.
It was just a teensy bit sad that you were eating alone on a Friday evening. Everyone else was out with their friends or drinking with their coworkers after a long day, but nope, you were dropping likes faster than you could finish your plate of specialty rolls.
Should I text him? Maybe I shouldn’t…
You fought with your internal dialogue, a back and forth banter as your fingers ghosted over keys. A battle between different keys and the backspace, ugh, you were on the edge of wanting to just snap your phone in half at this point.
Fuck it.
“Hey Itadori, are you free this weekend?”
Your thumb hit the send button before you could regret and delete the message again.
Why was it so hard? Oh right, maybe because you were the one who broke things off. Would he even text you back? Were you being too selfish to ask him for his time despite being the one who had ended the relationship?
You angrily took your last bite before waving the waitress down, “Could I get beer to go and the bill please?”
Fuck it, at least you made your shot. It was there, the attempt was made and now you can go home and sulk with copious amounts of readings for next week.
No, I can't sleep until I feel your touch I said, ooh, I'm drowning in the night Oh, when I'm like this, you're the one I trust And I said, ooh, I'm blinded by the lights
Was there a proper way to describe the temptation to sleep but not being able to? It couldn’t have possibly been insomnia, it wasn’t even half past midnight yet, you had the tendency to sleep a lot later but there wasn’t much waiting for you when you got home anyway. Halfway through the rest of your studies, you decided to call it an early night. The alcohol made you sleepy but your brain was as energetic as ever.
You heaved another exaggerated sigh for the umpteenth time tonight, rolling over in your bed to face the window in your room, “Where the fuck does all this energy go during class?”
The beer from dinner was not the last of the alcohol to make it past your lips. With your mother out of town, you had taken out your hidden stash from your closet after your homework—drinking every time someone from the mind-numbing reality show started to complain. That was a sure-fire way to have you in your drunken stupor.
...
“Oi, that’s enough, [Y/L/N],” a voice lulled your attention from the bottle. “If you keep drinking it all, you’re gonna finish it before we can even get a drop.”
A pair of warm hands pulled the bottle from your grasp, the pink-haired boy smiled at you from ear to ear. With a quick roll of your eyes, you let him take the bottle out, passing it off to his friend, Kugisaki.
“Oh, we’re talking about greed?” You challenged, an eyebrow raising into your hairline. “Mr. I-want-all-you-love.”
Kugisaki coughed into her mouthful of Soju, choking for a split second before bursting out in a cacophony of sounds. Laughter or a string of coughs? You couldn’t quite decide. Fushiguro simply gave her the side-eye as he continued to sip at his beer.
Itadori scratched at the nape of his neck, flustered at your rather bold statement in front of his new classmates, “[Y/NNNNN], you promised not to expose me in front of my friends.”
You shrugged at your boyfriend’s statement, [Whatever you said, Itadori Cuddle-Bug Yuji.”
Kugisaki started to slam her fist into the top of the kotatsu, her laughter has gone silent as she wheezed, “[Y/L/N]-san, stop, please. This is so gross but also so-Itadori.”
“EH?!” Itadori shouted. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS SO ME?”
Itadori and Kugisaki started to bicker playfully, one obviously a little more offended than the other. You shared a brief look with Fushiguro before you two silently cheered and took another sip.
The night had ended the moment Kugisaki passed out from all the alcohol she had. Fushiguro had gone back to his room and you and Itadori snuck into his room—if my sneaking around you meant giggling haphazardly at his stupid attempt to be subtle—where the two of you had collapsed into a heap.
“We’re definitely gonna feel it tomorrow,” you groaned, Itadori nodding along. His chin dug into your lower back as he moved. “Yuji, are you looking at my ass?”
Itadori snorted before stiffening up, “Uh-no. But now that you mention it—ahem—it’s a very nice ass.”
You peeked over your shoulder with a smirk, “Thanks.”
“No problem!”
A moment of silence washed over the two of you, you were almost sure he had fallen asleep, but he had shifted his body weight. With a single tug, he had rolled you onto your side and pulled you closer to his chest, “Nicer than Jennifer’s.”
“Better than Lawrence herself?” You asked, raising an eyebrow at him as he attempted to woo you despite his hardcore simp behaviour over the American actress. “No way.”
“Yes way, 100%,” Itadori grinned, his nose nuzzling into the crook of your neck. He smiled even more at the warmth and the subtle smell of your perfume.
With a small thank you ready to roll off your tongue, another voice cut through the room, “Oh definitely. I’ve seen the photos, she’s meh.”
The both of you screamed at the sudden break from Sukuna, his mouth appearing on Itadori’s cheek with a conniving smile. He brought his hand up, giving a firm slap over the mouth.
“Nobody asked you,” Itadori growled, his tone still somewhat playful. As you recovered from the sudden heart attack, Itadori continued to reprimand the curse, telling him to buzz off followed by a rather childish raspberry being blown by Sukuna.
“Sorry,” your boyfriend sheepishly coughed, Sukuna finally disappearing into… his own realm.
A tired and breathy chuckle tickled the tip of your nose, “That’s gonna take me a while to get used to.”
Itadori offered you a content sigh, returning back to the warmth of your skin. Maybe it was a mixture of the alcohol and your sleepy state, or perhaps it was the comfort from the weight of his arms around your torso but you felt so at ease. Your muscles ached for sleep and for the first time in a long while, you didn’t find yourself fighting it.
...
I'm just walking by to let you know (by to let you know) I could never say it on the phone (say it on the phone) Will never let you go this time (ooh)
Your mouth moved on its own, freeing itself from the unconscious suction from your sleep.
“Itadori…” you mumbled, another gyration of your jaw squelched at the sudden moisture. “AH!”
Sitting up in your bed, you suddenly became hyper-aware of your environment. The moonlight trickled past your grey curtains, casting a streak of light across the lump of duvet over your legs. With a tired groan, you reached over your nightstand for your phone.
The digital clock changed to 3:23 AM, but a cluster of notifications caught your attention through bleary eyes.
MESSAGES: Itadori Yuji (4 NOTIFICATIONS)
You swiped into your phone, opening his messages. Your eyes briefly widened in horror before you remembered being the one to initiate the conversation.
“Gojo-sensei said there was a field trip he wanted us first-years on tomorrow, but I’m free the day after.” “By tomorrow I meant Saturday” “So I’m free Sunday if that’s not too weird for you.” “Sorry, I know it’s Valentine’s.”
Your eyes read and re-read the messages from Itadori a few times over, your heart thrumming against your chest as you tried to form a coherent understanding of what was happening.
You purse your lips as you quickly typed in your response, “Yeah, I was hoping Sunday was cool. Maybe we can go on a date or something.”
The familiar whoosh of your message being sent pulled you out of your automated trance as you shouted, “WAIT!”
Oh shit...
With a little cellophane bag twisted between your fingers as you exhaled. A thin cloud of your breath danced past your lips, your body rocking on the balls of your feet.
There was just way too much… compassion in the air as couples walked in front of you along the street. Hands held or arms intertwined as they laughed. You saw one too many hearts in one blink, it almost hurt your eyes.
Somehow, Itadori had agreed to a date less than a minute after you had sent your offer like he was waiting at his phone to see why you had sought out his availability hours before. So here you were, outside of Shibuya station with some homemade chocolates and cookies you had managed to pull your hungover self to make the night before.
You peeked down at the goodie bag, only slightly cringing at the hearts that littered the cellophane bag too.
A disgruntled noise vibrated at the base of your throat as you grimaced, why didn’t the old lady at the convenience store give you any other options for goodie bags?
“Hope that’s not the sound of disgust with my presence,” a familiar voice spooked you enough to jump out of your skin. Your fight or flight response deactivated as you realized it was just Itadori. With a goofy smile as always, he gave you an awkward wave. “Hey, [Y/N]. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
