RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Amari Pollard, the defendant in the Huguenot graduation shooting trial, has pleaded guilty to two charges, including first-degree murder.

According to Richmond City Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette McEachinn, on Thursday, Feb. 29, Amari Pollard, 20, pleaded guilty to both charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony during the fourth day of the trial of Huguenot High School graduation shooting that killed 18-year-old Shawn Jackson.

Pollard was sentenced to 43 years with 18 suspended. He will serve 25 years in prison.

Pollard took the stand to testify Thursday, saying that he shot Jackson because he was scared for his life and that he was running away from him when he heard someone say “shoot him.” That’s when Pollard fired his gun, according to his testimony.

Prosecutors, challenging Pollard’s story, pointed to surveillance video which they said shows that Pollard shot Jackson from behind, and emphasized the fact that Jackson was shot a total of six times.

After hearing Pollard’s testimony, the judge ruled that there was not enough evidence for a self-defense claim and that the argument could not be included in jury instructions.

McEachin shared the following statement following the guilty plea:

“I want to thank the family for their strength in this eight-month ordeal, thank Richmond Police, especially Jeff Crewell, for a thorough investigation that resulted in the FBI being able to compile a video from a number of sources that set out a timeline that showed the defendant running around a group of people to get to the point where he could shoot Shawn Jackson six times. This has been a day that the City of Richmond and Richmond Public Schools and public spaces like the Altria Theater will never forget, and the defendant’s callous and thoughtless actions in a public graduation in a public space in the middle of the afternoon are the sole reason that he is going to serve 25 years in prison. His actions and his actions alone.”

Richmond City School Board member Jonathan Young shared the following statement with 8News:

“An excruciating eight months for everyone at Huguenot finally has some resolution, even if still too many questions are unresolved. I pray for better days at Huguenot, everyone there deserves it.”

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney shared the following statement with 8News:

“Today, justice has been served. Thank you to the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Richmond Police Department for their service to deliver justice to the victims, their families and the community. This guilty plea is a step towards healing for Huguenot High School, Richmond Public Schools and the city of Richmond.”

Richmond Public Schools also shared the following statement:

“June 6 was intended to be a joyful day for Richmond graduates. Instead, it ended in a senseless tragedy that took two lives, and destroyed countless others. We continue to mourn the loss of Shawn Jackson and his step-father Lorenzo Smith, and pray that Mrs. Jackson-Smith finds some closure and peace with the conclusion of the trial. We encourage any students or staff retraumatized by the legal proceedings to seek support from a family member or friend, a trusted colleague, or a healthcare provider.

Far too many children in our community continue to be impacted by gun violence every day. We plead with all of Richmond to continue working, by any means necessary, to eliminate this devastating epidemic and its root causes. We owe that to Shawn, and to all the children and youth of this city.”

In the days after O’Shae Sibley, a Black gay man, was killed during an altercation outside a gas station in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn, the picture that emerged suggested an explosive combination of homophobia, religious intolerance and racism.

Now, it appears the man charged with Mr. Sibley’s murder is not Muslim at all. The suspect, Dmitry Popov, 17, is Christian, his lawyer said, altering at least one aspect of a killing that has drawn national attention.

Mr. Sibley’s death had raised concerns about how the charged accusations could hurt relations between two marginalized communities, gay people and Muslims. In fact, the two groups stood together.

At the news conference on Saturday, Mr. Adams, joined by leaders from the city’s gay and Muslim communities, said that both L.G.B.T.Q. people and Muslims have been victims of hate, and the two communities “stand united against fighting any form of hate in this city.”

Mr. Sibley, a dancer and choreographer, was returning from New Jersey to his home in Brooklyn on the evening of Saturday, July 29, when he and his four friends stopped at the gas station, the police said. As the men filled up their car, they played music by Beyoncé and danced, and a group of men approached and told them to stop.

The men yelled homophobic slurs and anti-Black statements at Mr. Sibley and his friends, according to Joseph Kenny, an assistant chief at the Police Department’s detective bureau, at a news conference on Saturday.

Summy Ullah, a 32-year-old gas station attendant who witnessed the encounter, said one of the young men said, “I’m Muslim. I don’t want this here.”

Within minutes, the heated verbal altercation had turned violent, according to the police. Mr. Sibley was stabbed once in the chest, Mr. Kenny said. He was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Court documents said that a witness heard the group with Mr. Popov say, “Stop dancing here, we are Muslim.”

But at the court hearing and in an interview on Tuesday, Mr. Popov’s lawyer, Mark Henry Pollard, pushed back against some of the initial narrative: Mr. Popov is not Muslim, Mr. Pollard said.

“He’s Christian,” he said in a phone interview. “Somehow they got it confused, he’s not a Muslim. I could understand if there were other friends that were, but he was the only person arrested.”

Right after Mr. Sibley was stabbed, Mr. Ullah tried to chase down the attacker.

“I’m Muslim myself,” said Mr. Ullah, who immigrated from Pakistan. “When I saw them dancing, I was laughing too, but I wasn’t making fun of them. Everyone has their own perspective, gay, transgender. We have gay people in our countries as well. You don’t make fun of them. They don’t say anything to you. They aren’t making fun of you.”

Sayeda Haider, 23, arrived at the gas station shortly after the stabbing and found Mr. Sibley’s friends weeping. She comforted them and told them she hoped their friend’s killer would be caught.

Days later, Ms. Haider, who is Muslim, said she had reflected on the possibility that someone used her religion to justify an act of violence.

“It can’t be because of religion, because we dance,” she said. “We are strict, but we’ll dance at parties.”

In Islam, as in many religions, there are extremists who reject L.G.B.T.Q. people, she said, but she said that she had been raised to let people live their lives as they choose.

“We also came here because of freedom, because of the rights, so let other people have their rights too,” she said.

Soniya Ali, executive director of the Muslim Community Center, who also spoke at the news conference on Saturday, said it was not a “surprise or a shock” that the narrative that the person who killed Mr. Sibley was Muslim spread in the news media. Ms. Ali said she had neither experienced or witnessed any backlash from the gay community since Mr. Sibley’s killing.

She said she spoke on Saturday to show support for the L.G.B.T.Q. community in New York City, who she said were the first ones to reach out after former President Donald J. Trump instituted a travel ban soon after taking office barring visitors from six predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States.

What’s important now, she said, is making sure that the focus remains on the tragedy of Mr. Sibley’s “senseless murder.”

“He was murdered. It was a hate crime,” she said. “That’s the gist of it.”

For Beckenbaur Hamilton, 51, a neighbor and friend of Mr. Sibley, the attacker’s religion is not important.

“That part isn’t even relevant,” said Mr. Hamilton, who is gay. “It doesn’t matter if he is Christian, Muslim, Jewish. If a person takes a person’s life he should be held accountable.”

Solar Dimming, also known as stratospheric aerosol injection or colloquially as “chemtrails,” has been covertly underway for decades. Today, the negative consequences create an irreversible feedback loop as the world stays in denial.

After a winter of hell in California and skies adulterated by non-stop aerosol spraying, a substantial legal challenge has been launched against America’s biggest perpetrators. The perpetrators who are the subject of the legal challenge have not yet been named. “There’s a multitude of different reasons, a multitude of different agencies and players and actors involved,” Reinette Senum said. “It could be a university doing research, it could be a power company.”

Reinette Senum, former Mayor of Nevada City, California, can no longer simply sit and watch the geoengineering activities taking place and so has launched a legal challenge to stop it. “I am, and many of us are, sick and tired of being sitting ducks,” she said.

Stop US Geoengineering Legal Challenge

If you have been following my posts over the last few months, you are familiar with the hellish winter we Californians went through. While, yes, we can have rough winters, this was anything but normal.

Nothing around us is normal any longer, and there is one significant factor why; geoengineering.

In the past, I have interviewed Dane Wiginton of Geoengineering Watch. If you are still unfamiliar with what I am discussing, start with this interview.

Our forests are completely failing, and trees are dying and falling around us. Our bee population has plummeted. Our insects have vanished. Our birds are all but gone. Our forest fires are now unnatural and terrorise us throughout our summers. Our weather is weaponised, and after recently testing our snow and rainfall, the results are coming back with extraordinarily alarming amounts of heavy metals.

Over the years, we have witnessed an exponential increase in the unabated aerosol spraying over our heads, and this planet and everything on it is paying the price.

This stratospheric spraying is unabated, killing us slowly, and I won’t take it anymore.

So, I have reported on this aerosol spraying. I have documented and protested against it as well. I have clamoured over it for years and am tired of complaining.

I’m tired of being a sitting duck.

So, after weeks of conferring with legal experts (and frustrated citizens) and after getting some of the best minds to jump into the fight, I have now, only moments ago, launched a crowd-funding campaign to cover the legal fees this is going to require.

And, yes, I know there is 5G, chemicals, and a whole host of factors destroying our planet, but this one is as ubiquitous as the air we breathe, and our tax dollars are paying for it.

While some of you may ask why bother, the courts are rigged…. not all courts are rigged, and simply mounting a bona fide legal court battle against this beast will wake more people up to its existence.

We will not be backing down. It’s now or never…. and if we don’t stop this, who will?

20000 días de posibilidades infinitas

x Chan Tejedor - originalmente publicado en Revista Invisibles Dos caras de la misma moneda, dos rockumentales que en realidad funcionan como ensayos sobre la memoria: 20000 Days on Earth y The Possibilities are endless. Desde la abundancia de recuerdos hasta la imposibilidad verbal de narrar, ambos exceden lo meramente documental, son imágenes-poesía, crean mundo como cualquier expresión artística debería hacer y reflexionan no sólo sobre la niñez, el amor, la capacidad creativa y el trabajo cotidiano sino también sobre la memoria.

Este año que termina no vi tantas películas, o tantas como las deseadas o la cantidad que estoy acostumbrada a ver. Vi apenas, al día de la fecha, unas 165 películas, la mayoría decepcionantes, pocos estrenos interesantes y aquellas que considero obras maestras fueron en realidad, clásicos que volví a ver. Pero recordaré el 2015 como el año en que, creo, vi la mayor cantidad de documentales de rock y música. Desde Cobain: Montage of Heck hasta The Wrecking Crew, pasando por Mr Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne & ELO, Filmage: The Story of Descendents/All, los documentales que vimos casi todos gracias a la comodidad de Netflix: Keith Richards. Under the influence y What Happened, Miss Simone? y varios más.

De todos ellos, destaco dos que son en realidad del año pasado (2014), producidos ambos por Pulse Films y Film4 Productions y con el apoyo del British Film Institute. Se tratan de 20,000 Days on Earth de Iain Forsyth y Jane Pollard, el docuficción sobre el día número 20000 en la vida de Nick Cave; y The Possibilities are endless de James Hall y Edward Lovelace, un ensayo artístico sobre cómo Edwyn Collins tuvo que reconstruir sus recuerdos, sus palabras, su identidad y hasta el habla, luego de un derrame sufrido en el 2005, que lo dejó en coma profundo y del que al despertar sólo decía Grace Maxwell (el nombre de su mujer, quien además es su manager) y The Possibilities Are Endless. Ambos exceden lo meramente documental, son imágenes-poesía, crean mundo como cualquier expresión artística debería hacer y reflexionan no sólo sobre la niñez, el amor, la capacidad creativa y el trabajo cotidiano sino sobre la memoria y -como ha definido Borges a los clásicos- sobre las posibilidades inherentes de hacer, en este caso, un documental. Son por lo tanto, me atrevo a decir, futuros clásicos. Obras maestras e infaltables en la videoteca de cualquier fanático, no sólo de la música, sino del cine.

En el afán de terminar de redondear un escrito comparado entre los dos films, hice el trabajo de ver las películas en synchro y me he encontrado varias sorpresas agradables. Prometo un futuro post con las casi 200 imágenes que capturé de las películas proyectadas al mismo tiempo, post al que lamentablemente le faltará el audio.

Las dos películas abren con el siguiente plano:

La televisación del recuerdo, Edwyn Collins en Late Night con Conan O’Brien, cantando su hitazo “A Girl like you”, y un wall de televisores que ametrallan en tan sólo unos segundos, los 20000 días en la Tierra vividos por Nick Cave. Queda claro desde el principio que la idea en ambos es hacer un skip al tipo de documental más obvio, brindando en menos de dos minutos iniciales (mucho menos que los 10 minutos que necesitaba Hitchcock), un zip de imágenes con la consigna tácita de “si quieren material de archivo, ya saben donde ir a buscarlo, porque lo que van a ver es algo completamente diferente” y lo es. Los directores de cada película están muy cercanos a sus objetos de estudio. Iain Forsyth y Jane Pollard son amigos cercanos de Cave y vienen trabajando con él desde hace aproximadamente 7 años, comenzaron haciendo un trabajo de método de imágenes al que inexorablemente, las palabras y el guión de Cave y Warren Ellis terminaron de dar forma a lo que sería un proyecto mucho más grande que el que se buscó originalmente. Por su parte, James Hall y Edward Lovelace eran fanáticos de Collins y Orange Juice, y también de Frederick Wiseman como referente de realizador documental. Enamorados de la historia por la que tuvo que atravesar Collins, le hicieron varias entrevistas de las que surgieron la composición de imágenes que traducirían el desafío de las posibilidades de contar la historia de una persona que prácticamente no puede hablar.

Contar a partir de un archivo respetuosamente guardado, con agentes del recuerdo que acceden a las fuentes con guantes de látex en el caso de Cave, un obsesivo que pudo atesorar su vida, sus palabras y sus verdades monstruosas en una especie de Biblioteca de Babel de los recuerdos; o contar desde el limbo, desde el vacío y con la gran ayuda de Grace, la guardiana oral de la historia de Collins. Dos caras de la misma moneda, dos rockumentales que en realidad eran ensayos sobre la memoria.

-"Qué es a lo que más le temes?” Le pregunta el analista de Cave en una sesión de terapia, y Cave contesta:

-“Hmm… Mi mayor miedo, supongo, es perder mi memoria. Me preocupa a veces que no vaya a ser capaz de seguir haciendo lo que hago y alcanzar un lugar con el que estoy satisfecho”

-”En qué sentido?”

-”Porque la memoria es lo que somos, creo que tu alma y tu razón de estar vivos está arraigada en la memoria. Quiero decir, creo que durante mucho tiempo he estado construyendo una especie de mundo a través de la escritura de canciones. Es una clase de mundo que se crea sobre la base de esos preciados recuerdos que definen nuestras vidas”

El mayor miedo de Cave es lo que le pasó a Collins en febrero del 2005 cuando sufrió dos hemorragias cerebrales que terminaron en una operación, período de coma y lenta recuperación de la memoria y el habla. Sufrió parálisis total del lado derecho, ya no puede tocar por sí solo la guitarra, aunque Grace lo ayuda a rasgar, tiene problemas para caminar, usa bastón y la afasia dificulta la pronunciación, hace que tartamudee y le conlleva severos problemas con los números y el pensamiento matemático. Collins también hace terapia, pero con un neurólogo, tuvo que aprender a escribir con la mano izquierda y recuperó sus dotes de ilustrador, tal cual había estudiado, a fuerza de dibujar aves, siguiendo la sugerencia de Grace, que lo notaba frustrado porque dibujaba repetidamente la figura de un hombre con parálisis, su propia figura. “Creo que mi recuperación real comenzó con mi primer dibujo de pájaros” dice Collins en su propia web.

Sin embargo, una solución al miedo de Cave, bien podría dársela Collins que siguió sacando discos y produciendo a otros artistas (el maravilloso disco Seven dials de su amigo íntimo Roddy Frame, ex Aztec Camera; por ejemplo) y que pareciera resumir, con la sencillez emocionante de sus letras que lo importante It's in your heart, Not in your mind, It's not in your mind.

A partir de la memoria se establece una idea de hogar “I’m Home again” canta Collins en el disco casi homónimo de 2007. Un verdadero punto de hogar fue volver a visitar el estudio West Health, fue la música y su ambiente el detonante necesario para un momento de recuperación acelerada en la terapia de Collins, simultáneamente en 20000 días en la Tierra, vemos a Warren Ellis con un coro de niños franceses grabando, también en estudios. En los estudios reviven las letras, las de Cave, rigurosamente escritas a máquina, las de Collins, con una caligrafía casi inicial. Hombre-Máquina y Hombre-Niño. La maquinaria de Cave para conservar esas letras que tanto hablan sobre la memoria y sobre el proceso disociado de creación. Las letras de sus canciones suponen de cierta manera, una verdad. La metáfora de la verdad dicha por Cave al final del documental, tan sólo la reflexión de esa metáfora, hace que 20000 días sobre la Tierra sea una película perfecta. Una metáfora de la verdad como monstruo que se asoma por la superficie del océano y deja ver su cresta, en un atisbo deja ver su cresta de verdad para luego sumergirse de nuevo en las profundidades, quizá para siempre. De las profundidades renace Collins, repitiendo apenas las palabras The possibilities are endless, las posibilidades son infinitas. El agua también termina siendo un contenedor y un conductor eterno de verdades. Qué hubiese dicho Bachelard con semejantes monstruos, no?

Y las verdades no funcionan por sí solas porque tienen centinelas y tienen asistentes infaltables: Las mujeres, sus grandes amores. Grace es básicamente la exteriorización del yo perdido de Collins “Puedo recordar a Grace, mi mujer, ella está haciendo que todo sea mejor. Ella es mi vida” dice Collins. Y con “es mi vida” descubrimos que es literalmente su vida ya que lo ayuda en absolutamente todo. En cambio Suzie, la mujer de Cave es una musa, apenas la podemos ver en el documental, durmiendo al principio de la jornada, soñando con algo que no podemos imaginar. Luego la volvemos a ver en una foto, proyectada mientras Cave la compara con Marilyn Monroe, Anita Ekberg y miles de símbolos sexuales más, en una secuencia imperdible, casi de lo mejor que tiene la película. Suzie es la madre de sus hijos mellizos, Arthur y Earl. A Arthur, quien murió en julio de este año en un episodio de alucinación por LSD cayendo desde un barranco, se lo ve comiendo pizzas abrazado al padre. Si para Cave lo más importante de su vida es la memoria y la memoria está hecha de letras que guardan cada momento y Suzie es la musa que inspira gran parte de esas letras, entonces también para Cave, Suzie es su vida, aunque quizá es una versión del amor más icónica y no tan iconoclasta como la de Collins.

20000 días en la Tierra y Las posibilidades son infinitas plantean la apertura de lenguajes poéticos, narran no necesariamente vidas, sino formas de vidas, las vidas de dos artistas únicos, irremplazables y eternos por el solo hecho de habernos regalado verdad. Y sólo las personas generosas pueden regalar verdades.

O’Shae Sibley's killer may have lied about his religion during the attacks as a way to incite division.

A witness said a group of men that included the teenager charged in the killing used homophobic slurs and told Mr. Sibley that they were Muslim, and he should stop dancing. Some initial media reports picked up that account. Mayor Eric Adams and the police held a news conference at which the mayor stressed that the killing was not evidence of Muslim hatred of gay people. Now, it appears the man charged with Mr. Sibley’s murder is not Muslim at all. The suspect, Dmitry Popov, 17, is Christian, his lawyer said, altering at least one aspect of a killing that has drawn national attention.

Mr. Popov, 17, a high school student from Brooklyn, turned himself in last Friday and was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree murder as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon. He was denied bail in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn on Monday and is being held in detention. Court documents said that a witness heard the group with Mr. Popov say, “Stop dancing here, we are Muslim.” But at the court hearing and in an interview on Tuesday, Mr. Popov’s lawyer, Mark Henry Pollard, pushed back against some of the initial narrative: Mr. Popov is not Muslim, Mr. Pollard said. “He’s Christian,” he said in a phone interview. “Somehow they got it confused, he’s not a Muslim. I could understand if there were other friends that were, but he was the only person arrested.”

Also confirmed by his grandma and mother prior, but since this is a lawyer during a court hearing I think is much more safe to think.

It's very scary how manipulative this creature was, not only killing a person because he was just dancing and enjoying life more than this parasite probably had going to church and slaving away at two jobs during his useless life time(based on claim by the mother and grandma) but trying to use his death as a political wedge to attack other minorities to paint them all as just as extremist for brianwashed as him for another week of digital religious crusades.

I hope this gets stuck into people's heads that fascist terrorists do in fact lie about their identities and exploit it explicitly to innocentize and sanitize the far right and to muddy it's regressive genocidalist history so today's lobotomized right wingers can come on the internet and act like they have nothing to be held accountable for while demanding mea culpa from any leftist individual their encounter.

Fascists did it during WW2 and they will keep doing it as long as the media and public allow themselves to be manipulated by it.

Ciudad de México.- Ambos equipos lo califican como un duelo histórico, pero a la vez es inverosímil que hayan tenido que pasar 57 ediciones del Super Bowl para que por fin se juegue el primer partido con dos quarterbacks afrodescendientes como titulares

En una época de protestas por discriminación y énfasis en lucha social en Estados Unidos, Patrick Mahomes y Jalen Hurts serán los encargados de llevar el show del Super Bowl LVII, que se realizará el domingo por la tarde en Arizona.

"Pienso en toda la rica historia de este juego y ser parte de un evento tan histórico, un momento histórico, es especial", dijo esta semana Hurts, de 24 años y quien cursa apenas su tercera campaña en la NFL.

"Es un partido histórico. Tanta gente sentó las bases antes que nosotros, y jugar con un tipo como Jalen, que sé que lo está haciendo de la manera correcta, será un momento especial que espero que viva para siempre", añadió Mahomes, quien va por su tercer Súper Tazón como profesional, el mariscal de campo de raza afroamericana con más visitas al juego donde se disputa el trofeo Vince Lombardi.

Fritz Pollard fue el primer jugador afrodescendiente en competir en la NFL, en 1923, pero a la fecha solamente tres quarterbacks de esa raza han ganado un Súper Tazón: Doug Williams, Mahomes y Russell Wilson. Hurts buscaría ser el cuarto este fin de semana.

Hay otros que también llegaron al Súper Domingo como estelares, pero se fueron con las manos vacías: Steve McNair, Donovan McNabb, Colin Kaepernick y Cam Newton.

Cabe señalar que los Eagles se han caracterizado a lo largo de los años por tener quarterbacks de color, 11 en total. Destacan Michael Vick, George Taliaferro, Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb y ahora Hurts, mientras que los Chiefs solo han tenido tres: Mahomes, Quinn Gray y Warren Moon, el primer quarterback afroamericano que entró al Salón de la Fama.

Para darnos una idea del crecimiento en ese renglón en la NFL, esta campaña fueron un total de 21 quarterbacks de raza afroamericana los que lanzaron por lo menos un pase, la mayor cifra de la historia.

'Sueño real'

Doug Williams es una leyenda afrodescendiente de la NFL. El pasado 31 de enero se cumplieron 35 años de la ocasión en que ganó un Super Bowl con Washington.

"Sentarse allí y darse cuenta de que habrá dos mariscales de campo afroamericanos jugando en el Super Bowl, mientras que hace dos años la gente no pensaba que podría suceder. Y para mí, eso es un espectáculo digno de ver", le dijo Doug Williams hace unos días al diario New York Post.

"Para mí, ver que apenas son dos quarterbacks de raza afroamericana los que estelarizarán es una experiencia humillante, porque es algo que podría haber sucedido hace mucho tiempo si a muchos (quarterbacks) negros se les permitiera jugar en el puesto, ser titulares. Y verlo hecho realidad, es como un sueño cumplido".

15.-Harold Shipman

Nacido el 14 de enero de 1946 en el Condado de Bestwood, en Nottingham, y fallecido el 13 de enero de 2004, tras suicidarse en la cárcel, este sujeto fue acusado de matar a muchas personas con inyecciones letales de morfina, cuando gozaban de muy buena salud. Shipman, de adolescente, era un gran jugador de rugby en las ligas juveniles, al tiempo que se destacó como corredor. Era muy apegado a su mamá, quien murió de cáncer de pulmón cuando él tenía 17 años.

Esta situación tan particular pudo haber marcado al "Doctor Muerte", ya que su madre recibía morfina en la última etapa de la enfermedad, cuando ya era terminal, algo que iba a formar parte de su modus operandi en el asesinato de sus pacientes.

Shipman estudió medicina en la Escuela de Medicina de Leeds y se graduó en 1970, al tiempo que comenzó a trabajar en Pontefract General Infirmary en Pontefract, Yorkshire oeste, y en 1974 obtuvo su primer puesto como médico general en el Centro Médico Abraham Ormerod en Todmorden, al oeste de Yorkshire.

A partir de 1975, Harold comenzó a matar. Su primera víctima demostrada fue Eva Lyons y, desde ese instante, los asesinatos se fueron sucediendo de forma paulatina, no quería levantar sospechas. Siempre seguía el mismo modus operandi: elegía a enfermos que le caían mal (normalmente mujeres mayores de 75 años) sin importarle el grado de dolencia (leve, crónica o terminal), para después, acudir a sus domicilios y administrarles una potente dosis de morfina. Las visitas se producían cuando el paciente estaba solo en casa, así no dejaba testigos.

En marzo de 1998, la doctora Linda Reynolds que trabajaba en la clínica Brooke Surgery en Hyde, justo enfrente de la clínica de Shipman, fue a visitar a John Pollard, el coronel de distrito de South Manchester, preocupada por los altos índices de mortalidad entre los pacientes de Shipman, en su mayoría mujeres mayores. En ese sentido era sospechoso de haber matado, entre 1975 y 2000, a 171 mujeres y 47 hombres, de entre 41 y 93 años. La Policía empezó a investigarlo, pero no había pruebas para detenerlo.

La última mujer que asesinó fue Kathleen Grundy, una anciana de Hyde, quien el 24 de junio de 1998 murió en su casa. La muerte de ella puso a la Policía en alerta, ya que estaban seguros de que no había sido en forma natural. Y es que la última persona en verla con vida había sido el doctor Shipman, quien luego firmaría su certificado de defunción, alguien al que ya investigaban desde hacía un tiempo. La hija de Grundy, la abogada Angela Woodruff, quedó consternada cuando el abogado de su madre, Brian Burguess, le informó que la última voluntad de su madre había sido desheredarla, donando el total de su herencia, 386.000 libras esterlinas, justamente al "Doctor Muerte". Woodruff denunció el hecho en la Policía, por lo que el cuerpo de la anciana fue exhumado y examinado y se le encontraron niveles elevados de morfina.

La Policía le detuvo el 7 de septiembre de 1998 y en sus primeras declaraciones ante los agentes, Shipman aseguró que “yo puedo curar o puedo matar. Soy un médico y en mis manos está el poder de la vida y la muerte. No soy un instrumento de Dios; cuando estoy con un paciente, yo soy Dios. Soy un ser superior”.

Durante la vista judicial, los psiquiatras que analizaron a Shipman elaboraron sendos informes donde detallaban los rasgos psicopáticos de su personalidad y ratificaron que el médico era completamente consciente de sus actos, que era inhumano y que la dolorosa muerte de su madre fue el resorte que lo llevó a controlar la vida y la muerte de quienes le rodeaban

El 31 de enero de 2000, el jurado encontró culpable de asesinato a Harold Shipman y el juez lo condenó a quince cadenas perpetuas consecutivas y recomendó que nunca fuese liberado. Asimismo, en febrero de 2002, Shipman fue expulsado del Registro Nacional de Médicos británicos. El acusado negó insistentemente su culpabilidad y nunca hizo declaraciones sobre sus actos, mientras su defensa intentó, en vano, que no se lo procesara por el asesinato de la señora Grundy, alegando que no había motivos suficientes para inculpar a Shipman.

No pasó ni un año desde las últimas averiguaciones criminales sobre Shipman y el médico apareció muerto en su celda de la prisión de Wakefield. Se había quitado la vida ahorcándose con las sábanas de su cama. Era el 13 de enero de 2004 y tenía 57 años. En total, 459 personas murieron mientras estaban bajo su cuidado, más allá que es incierto cuántas de estas eran víctimas de Shipman, quien era el único que certificaba las muertes. Incluso, se cree que mató a tres pacientes, y que tenía serias sospechas acerca de cuatro muertes más, entre ellas la de una niña de 4 años cuando recién comenzaba como médico. Harold Shipman era adicto a matar.
