garlic scapes and sour grass
redraw of this dude. cant believe how shit my composition used to be. im still not immune to the maxpacks gouache brushes, though.
[ID: A digital painting. A nude trans man lies in the grass by a creek. He reclines upside down, with his head towards the bottom of the page and his knees towards the top, his hair splaying out around him. A pile of garlic scapes lies on his shoulder. The peice is surrounded in a border of oragami paper and gold foil. End ID.]

I tried looking around in search and in the archive, but most of the posts are from years ago so the answer might be different now. If it is different, I have the old tried and true question: what brushes do you use? Im in love with the subtle textures. Thank you!
Hello ! For my personal illustrations, I use mostly Procreate, so I'll answer on my procreate brushes ; I use photoshop for my pro work and in that case it kind of just depends on the project and I have a lot of brushes I made or got working on different productions so I can't really share.
My main inking brush on Procreate is the default brush called Dry Ink. I've modified it to reduce the pressure variation on thickness. I also sometimes use it for detailing for when I paint.
My main sketching brush is Color Burn from Tristan Yuvienco's brush set. (I only use it in black, but I find it super comfortable for rough sketching).
For colour and painting, I use various brushes from Max Ulichney's amazing Gouache Maxpack. Those gouache brushes are the best I've seen and they work great for me.
That's basically my rotation. I sometimes use other stuff but I find that those allow me a fairly good range of rendering variations. Hope that helps !

“Professor Dekarios” 2024
Digital Painting NO AI
Procreate on a Gen 3 iPad
MaxPack’s Gouache brush set
@galedekarios beautiful shots as references
Hello everyone!!
Thank you so much for looking at my work :) This started as a photo study from @galedekarios and was also my first piece using MaxPack’s Gouache brushes. I have been looking for a brush set like that for a very long time, they’re the closest thing I’ve found that lets me replicate my traditional painting style and experience.
I put Gale in green because I often think about whether or not he actually likes purple or if it’s just something he’s always defaulted to because of Mystra. I also used the design of the Blackstaff for his earring because 1. I didn’t want him to have Mystra’s earring and 2. I wanted this to very specifically be him a year or two after the game settled into his position as a professor. I also think he looks gorgeous in green 😂
I wanted a wave-like pattern for his robes to symbolise Waterdeep, and the quilted leather shoulder I wanted to be reminiscent of armour but look more like a plush leather chair one would find in a library.
I really hope that you like my work :)

soooo sorry if this was asked before i cant find it but what brushes do you use! i absolutely love the texture!
i have a handful of sets that i rotate through/mix and match! :)
retro maxpack: i use the gouache fine brushes for most of the actual painting process + gouache flow rough detail for, well, details, but it has a very interesting texture to it, so sometimes i use it just for that (i used to line and colour with it as well, but it's very hard on my hands like this, so i don't do that anymore. but it's suuuper versatile) + photocopy sketch for extra texture.
kolormarc: these are based on markers and they're amazing for imitating that look, but the brushes have such a lovely subtle texture to them that i also like using these for when i want mostly flat colours with no/very minimal shading. i use the lineart brushes included in this set a lot too
chromograph: i bought these for the coloured pencil brushes, but stayed for the oil pastel brushes (retro maxpack also includes pastel brushes and i think the texture is probably more realistic, but i love how easy the chromograph ones are on my hands. also they're just really fun!)! i love using these on their own, but they pair really nicely with the kolormarc brushes and sometimes i'll use them for my more painterly pieces as well together with the retro maxpack, like i'd use actual coloured pencils and gouache
kraftone comic brushes: this is the set i use for my fake retro comic art and i absolutely adore it, it's so much fun AND tickles my brain just right, but it's the most expensive set of the lot, with a very niche use, so i also can't heartily recommend it unless you want it for the very specific purpose of making fake retro comic art (the brushes intended for linework that are included are great, but if you just want nice brushes for lining, i'd recommend the much cheaper rusty nib inkers set)
dead head: this set is like the quiet kid that gets all the work done in a group task of my art :) i sketch with these, i line with these (not all the time but very often!), the texture brushes are everything i ever wanted and used to look for all the time. what can't she do, honestly
sadly none of these sets are free, so if you're looking to get ONE, i'd recommend either retro maxpack or kolormarc first, depending on which Look you like best! :) i'll also happily answer any further questions about these sets, because i know how much it sucks to buy something while not really knowing what to expect and have it end up gathering dust because you don't like it at all...

What app and settings do you use for your art? The quality looks so sharp!
Thank you so much!! I use Procreate on an Ipad Pro 11' and my favored canvas sizes are 8x12 and 9x12 at 300 dpi.
As for brushes, here's a list of my favorites:
SKETCHING: Memory I from this set
LINEART: Lately I've been favoring the Liquid Ink brush from this set! But before that I've been using the default Hemp brush. Sometimes I also use the same brush that I use for sketching for a quicker piece, like pretty much all of the ASOIAF art I've done so far.
FLAT COLORS: Any basic hard brush will work, but I favor the For Base Color from this set (it's free!)
CEL/HARD SHADING: I really adore the Lilly Sketch Low for cel shading from the above set! I also use it for hard edges in my more polished rendering before going in with a blending brush
BLENDING: I like the Tilt Sketch brush from the same set as the Liquid Ink brush I use for lineart. I also sometimes use the default Medium Blend brush!
AIRBRUSH: The Big Fat Airbrush v2 from the Essentials Maxpack is my favorite for adding blush
RIM LIGHTING: The Highlights brush from this set is great for rim lighting! Also this set is just fantastic in general for drawing magical effects
Sometimes I use the SA Brush Pen from this set to add fine details or for a quick lineless piece!
From the defaults, I like using Dry Ink on occasion, Spectra (modified to add taper) for little painterly details, Gouache (modified to add taper) for hair highlights, and Freycinet for quick shading
Thanks for asking! Hope this helps!

Top 5 procreate brushes 👀 I adore your painting style!!
thank you so much!!
okay first: my favorite brush for sketching from Gouache MaxPack
Tumblr media
2: this is a standard procreate painting brush, I love the soft texture!
Tumblr media
3. another standard procreate brush, I use it for broad strokes in the background or if I want to give a painting a rough, unfinished look
Tumblr media
4. another MaxPack gouache banger which I used for a long time for practically everything, it's a real multi purpose brush, very beautiful, very powerful
Tumblr media
5. MaxPack strikes again, this is from a retro brush pack. I'll be honest I don't use them that much because I'm not used to the feel of them, but the textures are very tasty
