Ok so hear me out (sorry if this has been done :) )
Buttons takes Olivia to Mary's Widows Support Group
Olivia is obviously distraught about Karl, and Buttons has noticed. So he takes her to see the group and acts as translator.
He tells the story. The widows are confused but eventually just accept it. Olivia is a regular and valued member. The Widows appreciate her wit. She goes to all of their outings. Buttons always accompanies her to translate. The Widows help him with his grief over Karl.
There's even comic potential with Buttons not mentioning he knows Stede, and thinking Mary is referring to some other Stede if she ever mentions him. Buttons would 100% describe his job as High Moon Priest and Husband of the Sea or something like that. They're just peacefully co-existing. It takes a full year to realise they're talking about the same guy. After that they just shit-talk him (affectionately).

#Ed: Who's mary#Stede: Would you like to see my secret closet?#Ed: Ah he is gay. Good. Mary's probably his sister or something So I was making a joke in the tags on this post and then I realized. Ed only ever hears Stede talk about Mary twice. once here
Tumblr media
The lines here are as follows:
Stede: Mary *whimper*
Ed: Who's this Mary then?
Then Lucius bursts in and no more is heard about Mary until here.
Tumblr media
The Dialogue goes:
Stede: Do they really think I'm dead? Or did Mary report me dead out of spite? I wonder if they had a funeral. I mean what would they bury? Would it be an empty - AHHHHH
Ed: What?
Stede: What have they done with your face?
and then they talk about the beard and no more is said on the subject of Mary or the fact that Stede has been reported dead. The only thing that Ed knows is that Stede has a woman in his life named Mary that would be the person to report him dead if he went missing. She could be anyone, a sister, a cousin, maybe even a maid. Ed has no reason to believe that it's his wife. In fact there are reasons to believe that she's not his wife considering that he doesn't wear a ring on his wedding ring finger at any point over the course of series. And if someone was acting like that at you you wouldn't assume they were married either.
Even in this scene he says
Tumblr media
Ed: What's that? Grain tower?
Stede: Oh, it's a lighthouse, I should have been one for my family. Guide them.
Ed: Well, Technically you're supposed to avoid lighthouses, so you don't crack up on the rocks.
The way Stede says that it kinda sounds like Something Happened to his family, especially in conjunction with him muttering that he's a coward and it is never clarified if Mary is part of that family.
Anyway Ed thinks Stede is either a bachelor because he's gay or he thinks he's a widower because of the "I was a coward" "I should have been one for my family" bit that he's doing. This is especially funny in conjunction with Stede "trouble in paradise" Bonnet thinking that Ed and Izzy are together.

A widow's life isn't nearly as bad as it's made out to be. The children have adjusted to the loss of their father far better than expected. And I find myself growing in ways I never before thought possible. But perhaps widowdom's most unexpected gift has been community.
Surviving one's spouse is nature's greatest gift.

Random fic idea that I’ll never fully develop
- For some reason, Mary and Doug and the kids have a holiday onboard the Revenge.
- Mary and Lucius get to talking about art, and Lucius is surprised that Mary doesn’t do figure work as much.
- “Your dashing man has never been sketched? It’s a travesty!”
- Cut to Doug sprawled out like Fang had been before, and both Mary and Lucius working on sketching him. Lucius likes the view as much as Mary does, but it’s also a good way for him to get back into drawing after losing his fingers.

I love Stede, he’s one of my favorite characters in the show but uh in episode 10 I was totally on Mary side and I wouldn’t have been mad if she managed to stab him cause all that episode when Stede kept trying to insert himself into the life that Mary built I felt second hand embarrassment it was terrible
The scene where he showed up to her art gallery?? I was flabbergasted with how much he embarrassed her in front of all those people
I’m glad they had their talk and made up and got closure cause Jesus Christ he was embarrassing BOTH me and her
