let's be real, being guillermo's friend/partner irl would suck ass. he's a manipulative serial killing embezzler who is having an emotional affair, plus he's constantly busy with his kid/creature that crawled out of the chest cavity of his dead friend + his undead three stooges.
HOWEVER
being his cousin would slap so fuckin hard man. every few weeks: "cousin memo's here and he's brought the five most attractive people you've ever met, an autistic child, and 50 grand cash." he barely comes to any family events but when he does you get to share gay judgemental looks w/ him. he keeps making you garlic bread and he bought you nunchucks. his trunk has a corpse in it.

Nandor: idk what I’m feeling but there’s a lot of it
Harvey said there was a scripted/deleted scene where Marwa tries to get Memo to dance so I'm declaring this canon as far as I'm concerned ty
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID: 1. During the wedding reception, post Marwa covering Guillermo in kisses. She is pulling him up from the table by his hands with a big smile, enticing him to dance. Guillermo looks nervous and like he may protest, but allows himself to be pulled.
2. Marwa and Guillermo beginning to dance in a loose waltz position, Marwa’s hand on his shoulder, Guillermos hand on her waist, their other hands clasped together with Marwa’s on top. Guillermo’s back is to the viewer, stumbling through the steps, Marwa smiling easily.
3. They spin, Marwa now in profile and Guillermo facing the viewer. Guillermo is looking at their feet with a nervous smile. Marwa is staring at him fondly, eyes hooded.
4. They spin, Marwa in profile and Guillermo facing the viewer on the opposite side. Marwa’s eyes are closed, still smiling as she relaxes into the dance. Guillermo looks up at her with a small smile, gaining some confidence as he takes the lead.
4. They spin, Marwa in profile and Guillermo facing the viewer on the opposite side. Marwa’s eyes are closed, still smiling as she relaxes into the dance. Guillermo looks up at her with a small smile, gaining some confidence as he takes the lead.
5. They spin, both in profile now as Guillermo pulls Marwa closer by the waist with a determined grin. Marwa blinks up at him, smile frozen and cheeks flushing as their eyes meet.
6. Guillermo dips Marwa suddenly with a laugh, her skirt floating up around his legs as she gasps in surprise, reddening further. Her tiara dislodges slightly from her hair.
7. Guillermo pulls her back up; both looking flustered. He offers an apologetic smile as Marwa laughs, cheeks deeply flushed, and adjusts her tiara with the hand not clinging to Guillermo’s shoulder.
8. Their hands join and they begin to dance again, spinning slightly so Guillermo’s back is to the viewer again. Marwa has her eyes closed, face leaning down to hide a besotted smile as a heart drifts up by her face. Guillermo is distracted by something and does not see her expression, turning his head to face offscreen.
9. What distracted Guillermo. Full body of Nandor In his wedding best on a splotchy dark red background. His face is in shadow, red eyes peering out intensely as he forces on a fanged grin. He raises one hand to give Guillermo a thumbs up, staring with some dark, confusing emotion. A speech bubble pops up from below screen with Guillermo’s face in it, grinning back at Nandor rather confused but offering a thumbs up in return. /end ID

something i never considered until this episode is…. Marwa knows.
like, the djinn wish made her like everything nandor likes, but as we all know about djinn wishes, you have to be super specific about your wording or it’s gonna come back to bite you on the ass somehow. Marwa now likes everything nandor likes, but there were no caveats in the wish about her awareness of it. he can change her mind but he can’t stop her from wondering why her mind was changed.
i think the man cave scene in this episode is a perfect and chilling reminder (as well as moment of foreshadowing) that she still has her intellect and her agency, and KNOWS that nandor has taken her free will when it comes to the things she likes. Marwa possesses deep practical and emotional intelligence, so the fact that she is slowly kenning to how and why her feelings changed so rapidly the night before the wedding makes sense. the look she gives nandor right before closing and locking the door is one of recognition as well as condemnation.
she knows what he did and will make him suffer for it until it is undone.

So let's talk about Marwa.
I'm so so disappointed with Marwa's ending you have no idea. I've been thinking about it since Saturday, trying to come to terms with it and I just can't. It's cruel, misogynistic and not funny at all.
I'm angry and even hurt with the way the writers have treated her character and storyline. Specially in a show with so few women, where, let's be real, Nadja is the only woman in the main cast. And they've been trying with the Guide since last season, but she's barely more than a side character and they could do so much more with her.
But this is about Marwa (the first woman of color with any sort of storyline in the show btw). And I'm going to say that the way this season handled her rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they have really dropped the ball with this.
Dear WWDITS writers: having one of the few woman on your show lose herself, her autonomy and all her choices because of a man and a marriage is not a hot take or funny, it's just cruel and not something I wanted to see on my silly vampire show, it's frankly misogynistic and brings nothing new to the table.
Marwa whole storyline is such a horrifying and unneeded part of the season. She was brought back from the dead with all her sister (and I guess brother) wives and had to watch them all get killed, one by one until she was the only one left. Still she had so much hope and wonder.
Then we slowly saw her disappear, episode by episode, losing more and more of herself, all her autonomy, all her choices taken away from her. Until that final wish that made her personality completely dissolve.
And the show's idea of a satisfying ending is turning her yet into another person (a man this time) and just sending her off into the world without any agency? What? And nobody brought it up? She's just another Freddie now, she's just gone, poof that's all we get I guess.
She deserved so much better. She deserved to get out of there in her own terms. She deserved to scream at Nandor, to humiliate him, bring him down a notch. I hope she gets to come back and kill him at some point during the next two seasons. Because this was not it.

@schreibfederlaerm left this scene in the notes on my last mardjinn comic and I HAD TO DRAW IT so ty to her!! 💖
(IDs in alt and under cut)
Tumblr media
ID: what we do in the shadows comic. Panel 1: waist up of Marwa standing in profile, wearing a pale green peasant dress, red stone necklace, and a pair of fuschia half moon reading glasses. Her hair is pulled back in a loose braid and she is standing in front of an old fashioned book wheel, which she spins to read the 7 different books she has set into the trays. She is smiling widely at the page she is currently reading, which is labeled 1969 and has a diagram of a rocket. Filling the background behind her is a photo of the known universe and several old newspaper clippings of major space news, including the moon landing, the first man to go into orbit, and the first satellite launch. There are also some ancient hand drawn diagrams of Saturn, a model of the solar system, a digital rendering of the orbit of Jupiter, and some 14th century Persian astronomical writings. The pages and the stars fan out and face behind her as the panel ends.
Panel 2: Close up of Marwa from the front, looking down at her book with an amazed smile. The background is filled with galaxies and her eyes are reflecting stars. She breathes to herself, “The modern world is so amazing…” Panel 3: close up on Marwa’s right eye as she is startled out of her hyperfixation by a speech bubble reading “You know…”. Panel 4: Chest up of Marwa from the front as the Djinn pops up suddenly behind her. Marwa’s eyes dart over to him, smile creeping back up as she recognizes him. He casually leans over her shoulder, meeting her gaze with his usual nonchalance, and continues, “I could give you all the knowledge of the modern world you like. Just one click away.” He holds up his pen, thumb poised over the cap as if to demonstrate.
Panel 5: shoulders-up from behind them both, book wheel gone still in the background as Marwa turns to look at the djinn, grinning with excitement. “Are you kidding?” she says, “Learning is the best part! Did you know people flew to the moon?!” The djinn just looks back at her, furrowing his brow slightly. He pushes, “Are you sure? I won’t even take a wish for that.” Panel 6: waist up from the front. The djinn has straightened up from his slouch, pen lowered, almost pouting at the rejection. Marwa, smile still full on her face, lowers her chin to slip her reading glasses off and says, “I don’t mean to offend you, but…”
Panel 7: close up of Marwa from the djinn’s perspective on a bubbly pink and white background. She is smiling gently, eyes lowered and shining toward her books, long curls of hair escaping her braid to frame her flushed face. She continues, “There’s joy for me in the journey - just getting things handed to me…” Panel 8: close up of the djinn on the same bubbly pink and white background, the panels split diagonally behind them. Marwa’s line continues: “…It would get boring rather quickly, wouldn’t it?” The djinn is staring down at her with literal hearts in his wide eyes, cheeks flushed with more emotion than we've ever seen from him. He looks absolutely lovestruck.
(after the caption)
Screenshot of tags from user schreibfederlaerm: wwdits. i've been thinking about them so much i have this whole scene in my head where the djinn finds marwa studying like 12 books about modern culture at once. and the djinn is like 'i could just give you all the knowledge you need to get by in the modern world'. and she's like 'are you kidding? the learning is the best part about it!' (but more polite) bc she's a scientist! she discovered things about saturn and now she's learning about the moon landing! and the djinn is like 'are you sure? i wouldn't even take a wish for that.' and she's like 'i don't mean to offend you but for me there's joy in the journey. just getting things handed to me - it would get boring rather quickly wouldn't it?' and that point the djinn would be like *heart eyes* bc she's not interested in just using him for his wishes! so now it's about proving to her that his magic is not just a tool to 'take the easy way out' and accidentally seducing her & falling in love with her on the way. I just have a lot of feelings about them okay? /end ID

So a boss/employee relationship is toxic and an unhealthily imbalanced relationship
But a man resurrecting his wife who has no knowledge or experience of the modern world due to having been dead hundreds of years, using magic intervention to brainwash her so she physically can’t think for herself, and then treating her like a child treats a pet they got for Christmas then bored of is fine and funny?
Ok WWDITS. Ok

When Nandor undoes his wishes, Marwa should stab him. Not kill him. Just run him through the middle with a sword so hard it pins him to the wall and then leave him there.
Marwa deserves to stab Nandor and Nandor deserves to be stabbed.
