Today's compilation:
World Domination or Death, Vol. 1 1990 Alternative Rock / Indie Rock / Goth Rock / Thrash Metal
So, according to a 1988 Rolling Stone profile that I just read about Björk's old band, The Sugarcubes, and the Icelandic music scene more broadly, the small island nation was pretty musically desolate until about 1981, when UK punk had finally made its way up there. And even after that, Iceland still only had one TV station and one radio station well into the 80s—both of which were state-owned—and the radio station almost exclusively played US top 40 fare.
So, given that landscape, it's then pretty remarkable just how downright weird Icelandic music managed to get so quickly by 1990, which is when this pretty eclectic sampler from The Sugarcubes' own label, Smekkleysa (Bad Taste in English), was released; because it wasn't like Icelanders had a collective easy access to any avantgarde traditions, and they certainly hadn't been organically forging their own either. But if all you and your fellow countrymen have access to for decades is US hits, then I guess the eventual backlash to that can and will turn out to be severe.
So, here's a strange brew of alternative Icelandic tunes that were recorded and released between 1986 and 1990. This label showcase's biggest draw is, naturally, The Sugarcubes, who were one of the first bands to ever receive attention from outside of Iceland (the first was jazz fusion band Mezzoforte; h/t to @dropdead-celebration), when their song, "Birthday," managed to peak at #2 on the UK's Indie chart in 1987, which then caused industry types and journalists to flock to the country itself in order to investigate just what the hell the conditions were like in this small, isolated nation that could lead a band to make something that sounds like that.
But while their exclusive, "My March," received its own sticker on the front of the CD's jewel case—so you'd know that this album had The Sugarcubes on it without having to pick it up and then turn it around in order to view its tracklist—there's actually another band on here that plays the nutty, hall-of-mirrors Sugarcubes style on here too, and with a very similar type of touched little girl vocalizations as Björk as well, but their pair of contributions are, dare I say it, actually better?
Reptile is a band that comes with the following assortment of instruments: your standard drums, guitar, bass, and keyboards, but also a saxophone, a violin, a banjo, and a marimba too. And while that combination sounds like something a bunch of smirking college stoners would probably torture their fellow classmates with, this group actually seems to squeeze out the best sound that anyone possibly ever could with what they have. "Gun Fun," which also appears on their only album, 1990's Fame and Fossils, and their exclusive, "Ó," really do sound a whole lot better than you'd think; a pair of quirky tunes that are unpredictably fun as hell.
But this album's not just made up of a Sugarcubes-type sound; there's also goth rock, thrash metal, industrial, even rockabilly, and also a band called Daisy Hill Puppy Farm (named after Snoopy's home), who deliver a song that totally flies in the face of the vibe that you'd think a band with that name would have; "Young Blood," which also ended up leading their final release, a 1989 12-inch called Spraycan, is a great, ploddingly heavy, downtempo indie rocker that sounds like it came from the States.
So, truth be told, I did not really end up enjoying most of this album, but it's still definitely interesting and worth it to hear some of the varied sounds that this little country that seemed to be pretty culturally isolated from the rest of the world for a really long time for was able to muster in such short order. Other places with far more ease in their many avenues of cultural access seem to have taken a whole lot longer to get to a similar point of weirdness when compared to this small island nation. And while weird stuff tends to stay underground and indie most everywhere else, it seems to not only just rise to Iceland's mainstream, but it becomes their most popular music attraction, overall.
Highlights:
Reptile - "Gun Fun" Reptile - "Ó" Daisy Hill Puppy Farm - "Youngblood"

The end of history

My parents love Jimmy Buffett.
This might be the least surprising revelation imaginable. My parents are boomers, both born in 1960. My dad is an army brat, the third of four boys; my mom is the daughter of a doctor who worked at universities up and down the East Coast. They met at law school in the 80s and proceeded to corporate careers, a house in the suburbs, two kids, two dogs, annual vacations.
When I imagine their lives - how they see themselves - I think they see themselves as simple. Not as in unintelligent, but as in easy to please, humble in their aspirations, clear-eyed in their morals. This is particularly true of my dad. His parents grew up in a farming town in rural Virginia. They were high-school sweethearts. Their straightforward Americanness filters through to him: he embraces normalcy as an instinctual birthright. He wants to do well, to look back on the day and know that he's put in the work, to go home and pet a dog and eat a good meal. He wants to earn his simple pleasures.
He is, perhaps, the prototypical Jimmy Buffett listener. In "Everybody's Got A Cousin In Miami," when Jimmy says that line about being an "international investor... whatever that is," his speech patterns are a perfect mirror of my dad's. His view of humanity as a mass of people confused by the byzantine systems that rule their lives, dancing on the line between upstanding citizenship and corruption? That's my dad, too. Their shared attitude is one of befuddled complacency. This is a mixed-up, crazy world we live in, they say. It isn't changing. So why worry about it?
I heard this song more times than I can count growing up. As a kid, I liked the song's laid-back energy, its marimba and horn flourishes, its call-and-response backing vocals; it feels colorful and vibrant and harmless, like a vacation. I never noticed the verse about undocumented people slipping into the country beneath the nose of the military, the other verse about a drummer living in a "third-world jungle," the line "Everyone is an aborigine," the line "One way or another, we're all refugees/ Living out this easy life below the banyan trees." Is this empathy, togetherness?
For my dad, I think it is. From one perspective, it's a reminder that people have more in common than we think. It's the Global Village Coffeehouse of music; we may drive nice cars and work in downtown skyscrapers, but underneath it all we are simply part of the beautiful, singular, primitive tribe of humankind. Everyone wants this life. Everyone can have it. Everyone's got a cousin in Miami.
When I was a kid, my parents took me to a Jimmy Buffett concert. I don't remember it.

Lol people always think I must be lying because I actually did things with my life... and I think it all seems to stem from not "doing things" in the way most people think of the phrase. But I thrive on experience, not some token measure of accomplishment.
I grew up ranching cattle, goats, and pigs. I farm crops and grow food. I'm about to go visit 13 of my family's 17ish horses and eat fresh eggs for lunch. I got my first shotgun at 8yrs old and have been hunting dove, turkey, deer, and rabbit since I can remember. I spent 15hrs on a tractor a few weeks ago. I love being my own mechanic and have crawled, mudded, and raced all over the place.
I also lived for about 12yrs in various cities. I've played with big bands, orchestras, steel pan groups, rock bands, country bands, and hosted the jazz night at a coffee house for several years as house drummer. I've taught at public and private schools, done clinics for ATSSB, hosted a marimba booth at an international percussion convention, and have been giving private lessons for almost 20yrs.
I've dressed in full armor with a shield and gone on the field for full contact combat. I've been beat to a pulp and felt the rush of victory in a melee assault. I've used recurve bows, longbows, crossbows, broadswords, glaives, spears, and more made of wood, plastic, and steel, and still practice and research historical sabre methods. I even got to teach a class on british military sabre a few years ago.
I've lived in the country and in the ghetto. I've rapped on local artists' debut albums and maintain a laundry list of recorded bluegrass and blues tunes. I've bumped New York underground rap in a 79 toyota crawler with a tan stetson on while driving through Texas to a dinner&jazz gig. I've drowned myself in homemade meade from a drinking horn and sipped expensive cognac alongside a maduro cigar. I've gone to rodeos and art studios, hung out with French painters and Brazilian guitar prodigies, drank beer with good ole boys and smogged out apartments with hoodrats, and to this day love all of it just the same.
Too many people try to find their lane and make the most of it. Life is long, but a lifetime is short yall. Enjoy it while you have time or risk wishing you had when that time is nearly up. Like a famous jazz saxophonist once said, and which I poorly paraphrase: Everything on this planet you don't enjoy and someone else does is just that - another thing you don't get to enjoy that someone else does.
Do all the things.

Comic college novel posts part THREE
Chapter Two
The afternoon was in the day like the yolk was in a fried egg. Kim woke warm in warm and happy and full of lightness. The humid air snuffled at his mouth and ears. Benjamin stood at the window, twisting back and forth. He was loosening his spine.
Kim led Benjamin along the cold black halls of the back of the house. “Are you sure they’re still here?” Benjamin asked. To an inexperienced ear, the house was silent; but Kim had heard the possum-in-the-wall freakout of the stove being turned on. Kim and Benjamin arrived at the huge light of the staircase, where the halls opened into the front of the house and its windows and, suddenly, its sound.
Kim was better-tended than his old friends, more physically healthy, and yet he had since the age of seventeen acclimatized his body to what was, now that he thought about it, an unusual level of substance abuse. Amongst their industry peers he and Benjamin were not outstandingly debauched, and the tendency they shared toward hyperfocussed self-care had wristed the reigns on their libertinism by their mid-twenties. And yet their industry peers were not a solid sample group, all of North America considered. Kim and Benjamin were Bing and Bob strolling into the first floor; there they found the junkie alley from High and Low.
“Oh no,” said Zeline when she saw them. “Oh no.” She was on the floor of the living room, back against the wall, a plate of breakfast on her well-thighed legs. “Gross,” she said. “Why is your skin so good? Oh. Ugh. Oh no.” The place smelled of pancakes.
Sunlight poured lemonadeish into the living room. The blank lamps stood perfectly clean and perfectly dusty, many. Isaac’s wires ran over the carpet. The windows were open. The cicadas rang.
Sunlight knocked off the glass in the dining room, creating the impression of sparkling crystal. Jean-Daniel and Ray sat at the long table. Jean-Daniel's size made him especially pathetic: he bent like a suffering Rodin, knuckles the circumference of cherries turned over his eyes, eating. Ray said hello to Kim and Benjamin by looking at them.
In the kitchen Isaac flipped white batter on the griddle, and the griddle looked like farm equipment left to die in the rain. Paul mixed a health powder into his orange juice. He lifted it, an offer; Kim declined. Kim only took ayurvedic supplements and children’s vitamins.
Kim fanned a pair of plates on his hand and made a plate for Benjamin simultaneous with his own. Isaac pointed without words to the bowl of sweet potato biscuits, and his silence was not one of pain but pride. “Very nice,” said Kim. “Zeze’s got it all wrong. Who needs a wife? Not you.”
“I’m my own wife,” said Isaac to Benjamin.
Kim and Benjamin ate on the front steps where they could talk and smoke. The steps were feathery with old paint. They were hot to the touch but sighed chilly breaths from under the earth when they creaked.
Kim and Benjamin were a little giddy. They had nothing at all to do. There were weeks before them of total freedom, without tours or studios or interviews or any work besides work which spontaneously took their interest and which they could lay down at any time. Here was Kim in a place he absolutely knew, and knowing it was not at all painful—and to his delight it wasn’t nostalgic. Here was Isaac’s flat land and soon the edge of the woods, drooping wet-fat and green; the still gray knots of the Spanish moss, the churning insects and the marimba noises of the birds; and the invisible crescent of quick passage from the woods to the clearing where the cars were parked, a way of moving which Kim had co-created. Everything here was here and still growing. Its history was inside it like Kim’s history was inside Kim, and it was alive as Kim was alive.
“What are you trying to see?” asked Kim. “We should probably not be around here this afternoon.”
“I’ve got a list,” said Benjamin.
“Can I guess,” wondered Kim.
“I think you can probably manage percentages.”
“I want to say sixty for voodoo.”
“Right. And then the rest is food and blues.”
“You might be disappointed at how easy this is going to be,” said Kim. “We could start crawling now and that sweet spot would get hit just going up the road.”
“I don’t care if it’s easy. I want it to be easy,” Benjamin said it with a political rhythm. “I want to roll back into Los Angeles just fat as hell and haunted all to shit.”
“Just a gigantic, cursed man,” said Kim.
“I’m going to be wearing lobster husks like Kali wears skulls.”
“The thing I love most about that great idea is fucking ‘lobster husks’.”
“Crawfish—” Benjamin tried badly to fix it.
“Lobster husks.”
“Crawfish—”
“What a pleasure for to suck the husk of its sea-flesh.”
They smoked although they didn’t need to. Neither was properly addicted. They looked at the woods. An air moved, and the leaves swung like girls’ braids. The day was not as thick as it could be. The hollows of Kim’s knees rushed with sweat and his neck was slick but there were no steams rising off the banisters. Kim knocked on Benjamin’s leg and pointed out a black skink in the grass. Benjamin leaned and picked it up, and looked at its face and touched its back then put it down again.
“We won’t go far today.” said Kim. “I’ll show you my town. You’ll dig it. And all the French girls.”
Kim vibrated with peace and a minor erotic energy. His recent life rooting itself down into his history touched the deep bell of longing for his childhood, and expectation for the future. He wanted to see his childhood home, and he wanted many women all at once, their legs spread like a Peruvian geometry, and he wanted a wife. Down and in all directions and transcendentally in one spot. A lucent woman standing on top of a complex ground, a very pregnant woman, grave-eyed with long loose hair.
“It’s too bad we just ate,” said Kim. “There’s hella restaurants.”
Pont Teche the town was built along the side of the waterway. Its land was dry for Louisiana and well-paved. A long time ago it had been a home to bad money and for that reason it was sturdier than the cities nearby. Its buildings were deep-porched and generous; they stretched their boardwalks between them so 18th century gamblers could walk door to door dry-headed. In the ‘90s the antique shops put on promotional festivals and locals walked door-to-door eating brownies.
Pont Teche the neighborhood was a leopard skin of bayou and flatland. Most homes were gathered in the little grid below the town, on squares of grass—sneaker-colored houses, straight, small-eyed, with flower bushes kicking their long legs over the chain link. The Douin house was cast far out, at a gulf of land within a swamp and woods. It was alone for a long way all round. Presumably it had been built by pirates.
They dressed and said some words to Isaac, and Kim took a six-pack from beneath the dining room table and carried it swinging up the footpath into the woods. With his other hand Kim held Benjamin gently by the arm. Kim held him from the start so that he would become accostomed to Kim’s hand being there and would not be frightened when Kim would have to seize him at the ten-minute mark.
The trees were veiny like cyclists’ hands, and gray, and personable, and absolutely heaving with green leaves. Benjamin’s blonde head moved like a child’s at a passenger window; it was an unusual mien for Benjamin, and it touched Kim to see his somber and orderly friend in this state of docile abstraction. At length the footpath asserted itself—the wide meadow floor of the woods narrowed into a discernible line, beaten in part by Kim’s own feet. The trees’ trunks bulbed and brightened into lunar greens, Tupelos. Kim pressed his fingers more firmly on Benjamin’s arm. The floor beside them softened, and softened, and dropped at precisely ten minutes into a great sponge the color of wasabi.
“Jesus Christ,” said Benjamin, juddering and moving in front of Kim as if he could tip off the footpath - which was wide enough for four grown men to take side-by-side - and into the swamp. Benjamin came to a halt.
“It’s cool,” said Kim. “Stay calm.”
“This is a fucking swamp,” Benjamin said.
“Be cool. It’s okay.”
“This is not something you described to me last night.”
“Brother. I know this path exactly. You are completely safe with me.”
“You didn’t even have a flashlight.”
“There was a moon. Let’s keep going,” Kim urged Benjamin’s arm forward, and reluctantly Benjamin lifted his feet.
“You’ve absolutely got to tell me if there are fucking alligators,” said Benjamin.
“They don’t go looking for humans.”
In the car Benjamin was sweating like wet fruit. Kim drove - Benjamin was too agitated by the alligators.
They played Arvo Pärt. They drove between the long shadows of clouds and the afternoon sun. Big land. The Douin forest stretched down; the road toward the city laid for a long while across a nearly treeless expanse. The clouds shone suddenly on still water and were in the next instant snuffed out in green. The rented car’s comforting scent and the cool, elaborate smell of swamp and bayou, white as clouds on water.
The earth changed. Steam rose off the road ahead them, at the long turn where the trees gathered and closed off the land. “Ghost corner,” said Kim, pointing. Benjamin sat up in his seat then drew his torso up and out, and sat on the window to watch the vapors as they passed. His half-done shirt clattered in the air. Its pearl snaps hit the windowframe.
The houses clicked up to the road, their car ports and bowed sidewalks. Jasmine, very softly - no storm yet, no storm yet. The scent of the jasmine would be magnificently heavy if rain were on the way. This was the close-built town, a few blocks of homes and decorative trees. Zeline’s old street - Zeline’s mother’s house, at the end of its way, only for a moment. St. Martin’s church, like a goose in a robin’s nest, hanging over its lawns. The river split the neighborhood and they took the bridge toward the city. Beyond, down the opposite road which they left behind, and a mile into the low houses and their rectangular windows, somewhere was Kim’s home and its short driveway, and its mail box with the red flag to lift and lower.
The bridge sank into a fair ugly mess of concretes and thin metals - electrical towers and chicken wire and the slopes of the overpass walked and doubled back like unhurried mice in a maze. The Teche put its thumb out and necessitated another bridge, a moveable bridge red as bacon with rust and decorated with a great artwork: the bridge’s lifting mechanics formed a skinny cage above the bridge, and at the height of this structure there was a sign depicting a crawfish against a background of troubled water. The crawfish spoke a long, slim speech bubble: “Ain’t It True! Pont Teche”. The crawfish was famous to anyone who had stayed in Kim’s apartment. As the car shot beneath the structure Kim and Benjamin screamed You got it! You got it! at the crawfish, for good luck.

What do you do when there’s not much to an AU? You make up your own stuff, ofc. And as is per usual when I make Character Designs, I make up a shit ton of lore too.
The ramblings under the cut, but what I’m really interested in, is what you guys think. Do you guys have any headcanons/ideas for this AU? Let me hear them! Also, if you don’t wanna read on tumblr, here’s the Google Docs link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/151yshHxnb_--P6eMKkwkI2dee9xC_Llb/view?usp=sharing
Before I get into the characters’ roles, here’s some general facts and backstory of their town:
- Basically, it’s Undertale meets Harvest Moon / Stardew Valley. Well, kinda. I at least used that approach for coming up for the jobs for the characters. You know, how there’s always a general store, a doctor, a smithy, etc.
- The usual story of a HM game is that you come to a town that’s way past its glory days and you, as the player/farmer, help them get back to that. The “backstory” of the town is that that already kinda happened. I’ll get into it more in the character description, but basically when Asgore was still mayor, the town got really popular. Then yadda yadda, a certain tragedy happened, two kids died, and the town suddenly got very bad publicity. There was a lot of stuff going on back then, bad reputation being spread and also a lot of law stuff, cos, you know, supposed child murder ‘n all, so Asgore made the decision to shut off the town to ppl from outside. This was in the interest of most monsters living there, because as fun as it is to have a lot of people coming there, most just wanted to live a quiet life. Not everyone was happy with that though, so many moved away from town and some others are trying to get the town back on its feet. But more on that later.
On to the characters:
I’m just gonna start with the skelebros, cos it’s their fault in the first place I got so invested.
Basically, they are what the player is in hm/sdv. They just showed up one day, took over the abandoned farmhouse and began their life there. The two came to town way after it was “closed” and since then a new mayor has opened the possibility for new residents to move in. Their farm helps the economy of the town a lot and the mayor, like usually in hm games, is trying to use that to make the town more known again. The skelebros aren’t really working towards that goal however.
So, now a bit more detail on them individually.
Papyrus:
- The design is mostly based on what’s “canon” in this au.
- He works mostly on the fields and is in charge of the crops. Their fields aren’t spectacularly big, but still big enough to plant a few dozen rows of veggies.
- Paps also helps out a lot in town when he has the time. He helps Asgore with his plants, he goes fishing with Undyne, helps Toriel carry crates around and so on. This is inspired by the part-time job mechanic in HM ToT.
- Unbelievably, in this AU Pap is not an absolutely awful cook. Since he helps out at Muffet’s and Grillby’s a lot, they tend to show him some tricks to cooking. Even though Pap’s not a big fan of the greasy or overly sweet cooking those two do, he picks up a lot.
Sans:
- Again, design mostly based on the “canon” look. Maybe a bit more baggy.
- This is finally an AU this dude gets to rest. Since there are no resets and he doesn’t have to see his bro die again and again, for once in his life, he’s not a sad ball of depression. He’s just a chill and lazy dude that loves to make puns. Though, since he’s not too experienced with the feelings of loss, helplessness or grieving, he still tends to hide behind puns and fakes smiles if he does feel bad.
- Sans is in charge of the animals on the farm. Papyrus begrudgingly gave him that role since Pap’s loud demeanour and hectic movements usually scare the animals. Sans’ relaxed attitude draws the animals to him naturally and even if Pap mostly finds him sleep against a tree, in a stack of hay or on one of the sheep, the animals are always fed, healthy and relaxed, so Sans seems to be doing his job.
- Sans always has a small chic sit inside his hoodie or hat. Is it always the same one? Who knows, maybe.
- Sans also, somehow, can produce eggs out of thin air. Grab into his hoodie pocket, in his pants pocket, in his hat, in his slipper, there’s suddenly always an egg there. On good days he can even make butter or cheese appear.
Gaster:
- He’s literally just a scarecrow in this. Though, if you ask any of the bros why they designed their scarecrow that way, they won’t have an answer.
Frisk&Toriel:
- Frisk is mostly based on what I wore myself as a kid in summer. Just a loose shirt with a cappy. Toriel basically has her ut gown, just with an apron on top.
- Frisk just appeared outside the “magical” forest one day. Napstablook and his cousin found them and brought them to Toriel, who has been taking care of them since.
- Toriel runs the general store in town, but also often takes care of the few kids that still live there.
- Frisk usually helps out in Toriels store, plays with the other kids or sits around at Asgore’s. They’re notorious for nabbing small snacks, mostly from Asgore’s plants. You’ll always find them munching on something.
- Frisk was in town before the skelebros. Since they’d moved in, Frisk often went to spy on their farm. After a small incident with angry chicken, Frisk got to know the two better and now they see them as something between brothers and uncles.
- But Frisk honestly gets along with everyone. Just like in UT, they’ve not only been adopted by Toriel but literally everyone.
- Toriel and Asgore’s relationship is not as bad as in the main game, since, you know, Asgore didn’t kill literal children, but there’s still tension between them. Back when Asriel and Chara died and the whole thing with the bad rep for the town began, Toriel felt betrayed by Asgore focusing more on the town than giving their deceased kids the grieving they deserved. They’re not divorced, but Toriel still moved out and said needed space to think. Now that Frisk is in the picture though, the both of them are slowly coming to even ground and may even be able to talk things out and clear up the uncertainty of their decisions.
Asgore:
-Asgore has his UT Ending / Deltarune clothes, just with a gardener’s belt.
- He’s the previous mayor of the town, but after all the crap that happened, he stepped down from the position. Now he has his own little shop and sells seeds, saplings, homegrown veggies and fertilizer. So, basically what e.g. the Marimba Farm is in HM AP
- His main customer is Papyrus and they’re on friendly terms. Asgore is worried about how much and how hard Pap works, so he often gives him a discount.
- Since his family’s past tragedy, Asgore is kind of nervous around kids. So, when he first met Frisk, he hoped they’d not visit him too often. But to his chagrin, Frisk took an instant liking to him and spends a lot of time at his shop (and steals eats the fresh grown veggies). Now, he’s really grateful for that, because for one, he loves Frisk as dearly as he had his own children, and also because now the tension and mistrust between him and Toriel seem to grow smaller day by day.
Undyne&Alphys:
- I gave Undyne a pretty basic fisher’s outfit. Alphys basically has Elli from HM’s outfit, just a bit more doctory stuff added. She still has her canon lab coat too.
- In essence, Undyne and Alphys have 2 completely different jobs. Alphys is the resident doctor and Undyne runs the fish market.
Two things. Yes, I know Alphys is more a mechanic than a doctor, she fits the aesthetic though, so she’s the doc now. And no, Undyne being a fisherwoman is not cannibalism, think of it more as a shark hunting smaller fish.
- The reason I lump them together is because they act as the local “smithy”. Alphys is still really tech savvy in this (I mean, Mettaton is still part of this AU), so she takes on most problems with electronics and stuff. For Undyne, I didn’t want to lose her Royal Guard’s Captain image, so she’s really good at handling tools (and weapons, but Al doesn’t let her make them anymore). So basically, if there’s a broken tool, you can be sure that either Undyne or Alphys can fix it.
- As for relationships, those two are still an item. Alphys is still really shy and a shut-off, but since Undyne and Pap become best friends, she gets to know the skelebros better. She and Sans especially get along well, since most of the time Undyne and Papyrus are let loose, they sit back and talk about science-y stuff. (no, Sans doesn’t have a background in science but he’s still into sci-fi)
- Alphys has a bit of a strained relationship with both Asgore and Mettaton.
Back when Chara and Asriel died, it was because of “illness” (maybe poisoning?). Alphys feels awful because with her back then limited knowledge on medicine she couldn’t help the two. Asgore doesn’t hold anything against her but Alphys can’t help but feel guilty.
Alphys still built Mettaton’s body in this one. The two had a really big disagreement, because Mettaton hated the fact the town was going to close, and he couldn’t understand how Alphys could feel otherwise, even more so endorse the idea.
Mettaton, Napstablook, Mad Dummy/Mew Mew:
- Napsta and Dummy are pretty self-explanatory, they got straw hats. Mettaton’s outfit is a bit of a joke cos it’s a play on “work at the top and party at the bottom”. The tie has two different sides, one with the yellow red pattern, the other completely red. His “top part” is the business part, because when he’s on tv or in the mayors’ office, you don’t usually see his feet. The bottom is his party/dance part, cos his dancing/entertainment channels mostly feature his legs.
- Mettaton, still a robot, Napstablook and Mad Dummy are all still cousins in this AU.
- Originally, they all lived and worked at the Blook Farm, the Animal Farm of this AU. Mettaton, however, despised that simple live and after befriending Alphys and her building him a body, he left the Farm to pursue bigger things.
- Mettaton runs the local tv network. From weather to game shows, he does it all. He also runs the tailor shop in town that sells his designer clothes and merchandise. After Asgore stepped down, Mettaton also took over the role of town’s mayor and now works towards making the place more known again. Not everybody is happy with him doing that though.
- One of those people is the Mad Dummy. He can’t stand people anyways and he always claims that history would just repeat itself.
- Since the whole family is made of ghosts, they have different dummies and scarecrows they can use to take care of the animals. To mock Mettaton and kinda get back at Alphys for giving MTT such an opportunity, Mad Dummy found the blueprints for the Mew Mew robot and now modelled one of their scarecrows after it.
- Napstablook isn’t fond of taking over obejcts like his cousins do, so he mostly takes care of the snails. Somehow, he can interact with them even when incorporeal.
Muffet&Grillby:
- The two of them run the Inn together. Muffet cooks in the daytime and makes desserts, Grillby manages the bar in the evening.
- The two still can’t really stand each other but working together like this benefits them both because their rivalry just spurs them on more.
- Even though Grillby is a patient person, somehow Muffet is the only person who riles him up enough to retaliate. (Well, maybe except for Sans, he’s a strong second).
So, basically everything between those two is a challenge in some way. Even if Papyrus doesn’t notice, even his cooking lessons are a challenge for them.
- Even though they’re constantly bickering, after working together for so many years, there’s a strange level of respect and trust between them. Even if back when they first started this business, they’d pour salt into an already open wound, nowadays they’d know better and just take a step back from the other or even comfort the other (on very rare occasions only).
Asriel&Chara:
- They be dead. Kinda.
Some Characters that’d live in that town too but that I haven’t made designs for:
- Gerson is the original smithy of the town. He’d grown up in a family of smiths, but he’d always had an appreciation for the sea. That’s why, when the town became more deserted and Undyne had a good enough skill level as smith, he took up the Captains hat and now mostly spends his days out on sea. He also ferries people to places if they need him to. Oh, and just like in canon, Undyne learned most of her skills from him.
- Burgerpants is a poor dude Mettaton basically kidnapped when he was trying to get fame in the city. Now Burgerpants works wherever MTT needs him to, be that as cameraman for the tv shows, cashier in his tailor shop or his slave secretary in the mayor’s office.
- MK is Frisk’s best kid friend. MK’s parents are in charge of shipping the goods out of town and paying the individual people. MK’s the one that usually collects the goods at the end of the day.
- Other than that, there are only a few people in town. I’d imagine the older folks or the really young families stayed in town after it was closed. I think the librarby dude would still run the library. Some Snowdin residents like the stone family or the dogs also might still live there.

one good thing for a lot of people in animal parade is that time goes SO slowly throughout the day, so you have time to get around to places and do what you have to! the one thing i focus on besides wooing my rich blonde boy is just keeping enough food to give my animals each day!
YEAH i actually for a while had like. memorized the WHOLE intro bc I played it so much trying to perfect my routine to get the harvest king unlocked, getting through all the bells with enough time to woo him. unfortunately besides "buy the strawberry and milk from horn ranch / marimba farm ahead of time for that guy at the bridge when you meet him so it speeds things up" i have forgotten my entire routine of the intro </3
however I will say the time moves slowly but not slow enough for my nerves </3 although back when I , again, had that routine with going through the plot, I would have everything done by like 2pm in the day and id be like. guess ill go to bed now -

六 (Six)
Summary: The Wizard is skilled in many fields, but the domain of growing and raising things almost solely belongs to Hikari. Even so, he gives it a shot for her sake and the results are... not quite what he had hoped. She loves him anyway.
Another entry in the Hikari and the Wizard: A Hundred Words series! Once again it is very very late, but what can you do. Also once again it is very very out of order, but I do not care. Enjoy!
This fic can also be read on Ao3!
As wide as the scope of the Wizard’s skills is, he is not particularly adept at growing things.
It’s a bit ironic, considering he’s married to a farmer. He understands the principles, of course, and gets to see Hikari’s methods first-hand. She has such success with her various crops, and so he takes diligent notes. He pays close attention to the temperature of the soil when she plants the seeds, how much water she gives each seedling, and the exact shade of the fruits when she deems them ready for harvest. It’s a bit frustrating when he asks her how she knows all of these things and all she can do is shrug, telling him it “just feels right” with an apologetic smile. He supposes that this is Hikari’s own type of magic, one that he may never understand.
That doesn’t stop him from trying, though.
She pours her soul into her farm, and while he does his best to assist her by collecting eggs or pulling stray weeds he finds in the plots, his efforts pale in comparison to hers. Of course he knows that he will never be able to match her in farming ability, but he wants to make a gesture for her in her own language, so to speak. And so he hatches a plan to secretly grow an assorted bouquet of her favourite flowers and give them to her as a gift.
The Wizard realizes he’s lucky that he occasionally goes down to Marimba Farm to buy Hikari’s seeds as he’s walking there one sunny afternoon. No one blinks an eye as he makes his way across the river and into the shop, exchanging a few simple pleasantries with Ruth before stepping back out and realizing that he doesn’t know where he’s going to plant them. Certainly nowhere around their home -- Hikari knows every inch of her farm by heart, and she’ll immediately notice the turned earth where he’s planted them, let alone when they start growing.
Perhaps he can go back inside and ask Ruth if he can rent a small plot of their land to grow them on? He quickly dismisses the idea, knowing that if he does he risks someone seeing him tending to the flowers and telling Hikari before he’s had a chance to give them to her. He’s not sure if he could be charming enough to convince the sharp-tongued farmer anyway; she’s kind enough to him when he comes by on errands for his wife but it’s clear that she would prefer Hikari’s company any day.
So he goes to the only other place he can think of: the depths of Fugue Forest. While he still doesn’t exactly enjoy the Witch’s company, he can admit that they have come to a sort of understanding in which they tolerate each other’s presence for Hikari’s sake. Ever since she had rescued her from her unfortunate amphibian state and subsequently brought her assorted blackberry sweets, the Witch has developed a bit of a soft spot for the young farmer. She just happens to think she has poor taste in men.
When the Wizard finally shows up on the Witch’s doorstep (having collected a Fugue mushroom on his way to give her, just for good measure) and explains his situation, the hag has the audacity to start laughing. Absolutely cackling. He stares at her with an unimpressed glower, and she finally replies as she gets her breath back in gasps.
“You? Grow flowers? In my garden, of all places? I mean, I know you’re still all googly-eyed over her, but this is just too good,” she lets out another giggle, wiping a stray tear from her eye. “I never thought I’d see the day you’d willingly get dirt all over yourself, and for a girl no less.”
The Wizard sighs, supposing she’s a tiny bit right. If someone had told him a few years ago that this is what he would be doing today, he would have suspected a head injury. Even so, he can’t let her have the satisfaction. He simply levels a steely gaze at her.
“You didn’t... answer my question. Can I use your garden... or not?”
The Witch shrieks another laugh as if he’s said the funniest thing she can imagine, and the Wizard winces at the volume.
“You’re serious! You’re actually serious!” She slaps her leg in amusement. “Sure, fill your boots! It’s not like I use it much, and it’ll be hilarious watching you get yourself all muddy trying to care for the things. As long as you don’t expect me to do anything,” she adds with another snicker.
And so the Wizard begins making daily trips through the forest to the Witch’s house. Again, he thanks the Goddess for his good luck that the forest is not an unusual place for him to be and it doesn’t cause any suspicion on Hikari’s part. He does wish he didn’t have to deal with the Witch herself -- whenever he visits to care for the little seedlings, he can feel her amused gaze on him from her kitchen window, and occasionally she’ll even lean out and heckle him before going back to whatever it is she does all day -- but all things considered, it’s not so bad.
That is, until he notices the seedlings are starting to die off.He had originally purchased a rather large amount of seeds, causing the witch to cackle at him again when she saw just how carried away he had gotten.
“You’ll have more than a bouquet with that many seeds! You can start your own flower shop instead of telling fortunes!” She had squealed before devolving into another fit of giggles.
But now he’s starting to worry if he’ll be able to pull together enough blossoms to give Hikari at all. It seems every day there are fewer and fewer plants left, and he feels a pang of dismay every time he has to pull up a withered set of leaves.
After weeks of careful tending, he’s left with just a handful of sad-looking flowers. He counts them as he plucks them gingerly from their stems, doing his best not to damage them. Six. He managed to grow six flowers out of the dozens of seeds he bought. It’s definitely not what he had hoped for, but he still wants to give her something and he figures it’s too late in the season to start more seeds now.
He carries the little bundle home, half wondering if he should just give up entirely and find a different sort of gift. Standing outside their front door, he runs through a list of possibilities. He could cook her a nice dinner. He thinks he remembers her mentioning some new calves she saw at Horn Ranch the other day, and considers asking Cain if he’d be willing to sell one. But before he can settle on an alternative, the door opens and warm light spills out into the evening air.
“There you are! I was getting worried when you hadn’t come home,” Hikari says, relief evident in her tone. Her eyes drop to his attempted bouquet, then bounce back up to meet his own startled gaze, full of questions. “What’s this?”
The Wizard rubs a hand on the back of his neck, suddenly bashful. He feels like a child presenting his mother with a piece of macaroni artwork.
“These are... for you. I tried to grow them myself, but they aren’t... as beautiful as I hoped. I hope you like them... anyway.”
Hikari’s face breaks into a blazing smile, and she reaches forward to take the offered flowers. Before he can so much as blink she’s scrambling around in the cupboards for an appropriate vase.
“You grew these on your own? They’re plenty beautiful, I love them. Thank you,” she kisses him softly before turning back to her task of arranging them.
Somehow, her deft hands manage to make the six little blooms look purposefully minimalistic in their vase. They sit proudly on the kitchen table, and Hikari admires them with glowing eyes.
“I never knew you had such a green thumb,” she says later, tucked into his side on the couch. “Maybe I should get you to help me with growing my flowers next season.”
He knows she’s joking, that she doesn’t expect him to actually take her up on it. But he finds himself attracted to the idea. Caring for the little plants was relaxing, in its own way, and of course he’ll use any excuse he can to spend time with her. Even having been married for a few seasons now, that impulse hasn’t gone anywhere.
He squeezes her close, feeling content despite his fumbled attempt at a gift.
“That... sounds lovely.”

Reviews 310: Bartosz Kruczyński
As mentioned during my write-up for Masala Kiss, I fell behind this year in covering Growing Bin Records and am trying to get back on track, having just visited the Trance Not Trance 12” on Glowing Pin. So next I’d like to focus on Bartosz Kruczyński’s Baltic Beat II, which was released back in April and serves as a sequel to one of my favorite albums ever in 2016′s Baltic Beat. Though Bartosz had already hinted at the direction he would take on Baltic Beat as early as 2015 with The Phantom’s “Ocean” (on Transatlantyk), the album was nevertheless a total revelation…a near perfect summation of minimalism, new age, kosmische, and post-rock built from solar organ swells, aqueous synthesizer environments, sunset orchestrations, liquid space guitars, and interlocking cycles of piano, vibraphone, and marimba. And I’m overjoyed to report that Baltic Beat II, which is appropriately subtitled Pastoral Sequences, continues exploring these same realms of bucolic dream ambiance, though there are some new textures and influences that reveal themselves on deep listening, with Bartosz touching upon spiritual jazz, avant-prog, and even ambient techno while also expanding the instrumental palette via guitar and bass from Marek Stuckzyński (aka Eltron John), flute from Marek Pędziwiatr, and vocals from Jagoda Gawliczek. As well, Baltic Beat II references the first Baltic Beat visually by once again featuring the serene photography of Karolina Zajączkowska, with the visual artist here focusing on rolling grain fields, cloudy skies, and scenes of farm life during harvest…a strange yet sympathetic match for Bartosz’s worlds of spiritual sonic nostalgia.
Bartosz Kruczyński - Baltic Beat II: Pastoral Sequences (Growing Bin Records, 2019) Lapping water and a symphony of insects introduce “Pastoral Sequences”…the sounds evoking the cool comforts of dawn and the feeling of a world waking up. Crystalline pads and sunrise organs smear together and buzzing tones sitting somewhere between hornet and saxophone flow across the spectrum, with thunder rumbling far in the distance. Bodies rustle through seas of grass and pianos fall like a rain until whooshing sounds sourced from a train (or a jet engine?) wash the mix clean, leaving space for spiritual vocals to fade in and sing child-like hymns. As the singing wavers through arresting vibrato motions, bleary-eyed synth layers surround laser-light glitches and mutating birdsong and eventually, idiophonic sequences bubble into the mix, though never rising above a meditative whisper. Next comes “In the Garden” and its oceanic fogs colored in hues of deep blue and dark grey. Piano chords drift and bass electronics float the spirit while mallet instruments add gentle touches of exotica to the evolving post-rock swoon. A muted kick taps out a hypnotic groove, which is then given further shape by tambourine jangles, kinetic rimshot rhythms, and jazzwise acoustic guitar riffing from Marek Stuczyński. An electric guitar executes fluid slides and starbeam solo dances, synthesized woodwind ensembles weave cinematic themes, and string synths are smothered in phaser psychedelics until the melodic elements pull away, leaving behind marimbas and a soft percussive hypno-glide…the feeling as if skipping through some flower field paradise. Phaser-blasted strings diffuse back in alongside sliding six-string melodics and now the rhythms are accented by tribalistic tom-tom dances, which somehow pull my mind to Popoul Vuh and the rhythmic work of Daniel Fichelscher.
“Petals” opens on an orchestral awakening, as seemingly millions of strings saw quickly back and forth…the effect like a cloud of fluttering butterflies. The hyperspeed repetitions blur into a minimalist dream haze as a technoid sequence bounces in, reveling in playful filtering and melancholic melodicism. Marimba taps are surrounded by blasts of spaceage gas and piercing feedback sonics fade in and out…cycling the mind through repeated ecstasy ascents while string orchestrations soar through phase shifting madness. Then, after piano chords drop from the clouds, they settle into a peaceful cycle, alternating back and forth with sliding electric leads and buried dream-pop arpeggiations. We rush right into a prismatic world of chiming starlight in “Voices,” with uncountable marimba, vibraphone, and guitar layers woven into a minimalist tapestry of every possible color. Cymbal taps keep a rhythmic pulse as galactic guitars solo overhead, with occasional volume knob echo-swells evoking the whalesong space psychedelics of Gilmour and Göttsching. At some point everything spreads out…mystifies…transmutes into ether…with the minimalist patterns almost imperceptibly receding until all that remains are tapped percussions and shimmering webs of guitar majesty. Then, further six-string layers fade in, with everything locking into syncopated echo grooves in the style of Schickert and Reichel…a sort of kosmische music generated purely by guitar, with layered arpeggiations flowing through mechanized delay trails and bluesy leads swimming across the sky. It’s a brief but glorious moment, and as the guitars slowly peel away, tick-tocking cyborg electronics progressively filter into indistinction while a lone guitar references the minimalist glories of the track’s introduction. And all the while, pianos wash out through liquid layers and tremolo hallucinations.
Tumblr media
The B-side opens with “If You Go Down in the Woods Today,” which sees shakers rattling and marimbas moving through thrilling runs and dramatic key changes. The mallet motions are tracked by sprightly reeds and shining cymbal taps and eventually, low-down brass skronks join the panoramic dream flow (in way recalling Colin Stetson). Choirs bring touches of Zuehl to the proceeding, with masculine voices dispersing into shadow and feminine choirs chanting towards the sun. Cymbals swell, brass and woodwind instruments scat into hypnotic ecstasy, and pianos solo as waves of electronic smolder fade into view. Later, bass heavy marimba notes splash through tide pools alongside pulsating fusion basslines from Stuczyński, with the pianos swooning through mystical McCoy Tyner-style patterns. In fact, when viewed from afar, the track takes on the form of a spiritual jazz bop, though nearly beatless and landing like a dream. Moving into “The Orchard,” mallet instruments dance through kosmische echoes, with the repeating star-trails approximating Berlin School sequencers even as the melodies portend atmospheres of hope and joy. Vibraphones bend through mirage-like vibrato and electric guitars spray cosmic hazes as they solo…almost as if each note is carried within an aquamarine fog. The continually cycling marimba and vibraphone layers create an irrestible groove, one that causes the body to sway at peace in an ambient trance state, and occasionally, reversing bell-tones dance in counterpoint. Later, buzzing bass synths pound on the beat, with industrialized echoes spreading out…as if decaying within a cavernous warehouse structure.  And briefly towards the end, vibraphones solo joyously and mermaid voices flow in from underwater kingdoms, causing the spirit to soar beyond the clouds.
Baltic Beat II closes with the two-part “Along the Sun-Drenched Road,” the first part of which is built on mesmerizing synthetic cycles…almost as if a Leslie speaker has been slowed to the speed of evolution while being submerged deep within some galactic ocean. These throbbing dream sequences are flashed around by seascape tracers as a piano meditation unfolds, all glorious new age magic accented by glassy electronics that mutate into glowing gas. Seed shakers rattle like snake tails, orchestral woodwind themes are blurred by seafoam, and wavering organ majesties float towards the sky…all while Bartosz’s ivory note cluster and golden chordscapes wrap around the heart. Ebowed guitars swim in the background and strange sci-fi sequences float against the grain until the oceanic sound environments recede, leaving just drunken space electronics and birdsong. Marek Pędziwiatr’s flute then swells across the stereo field, alighting on breathy mysticisms and spiritual incantations…as if some satyr-like being is skipping through a forest of light. Birds of every color flit branch to branch and rainbow hazes are beamed in from futuristic dimensions while hovering just out of reach and eventually, the flute playing devolves into delay-soaked finger tapping. As we move into “Along the Sun-Drenched Road 2,” Pedziwiatr’s woodwinds flutter through white noise winds as psychedelic pad layers diffuse into the mix, with overlapping resonances creating softly lapping wavefronts. The flute eventually disappears as distorted voices lock into an esoteric chant and as we move towards the end, technoid rhythm patterns flow into the mix, with electronic cymbal taps and tom-toms locking into manic groove cycles while the tempo continuously morphs, sometimes accelerating wildly towards hyperspace delirium.
