Finished Kith & Kin today, and it's really good! It does a good job of digging into why the twins are the way they are, and remains faithful to what we know of their characterization from the early campaign while still making reasonable inferences about what they'd have been like before. There are many potential ways to write a relationship like the twins' very poorly, and Marike Nijkamp avoids all of them—the twins are there for each other no matter what and are incredibly devoted to each other, but they also bicker and argue like siblings and aren't afraid to push against each other if they think they should. There's a lot of good attention paid to even some small details, like what we know about how the twins behaved in Syngorn and how Vex studied harder than Vax. At some point I'd like to reread it and find some of the lines that really stuck out to me, because there are some great moments all throughout.
Nijkamp is also clearly aware that readers need a reason to be invested in a book whose main characters' fates are a foregone conclusion, because the overall conflict isn't one. They've developed a really strong cast of supporting characters over the course of the story whose fates aren't set in stone, and you're hooked into caring about them regardless. The characters and story all fit in perfectly with the world of Exandria; rather than simply prequel fodder, they feel like additions that have simply been there all along. The intrigue is engaging and balanced, the characterization is strong, and the various plot elements work not only as both direct and inverse functions of the twins' respective strengths, but also as reflections of the conflicts both between and within them, foreshadowing the points where we know their paths will ultimately diverge.
If you're a fan of the twins, I highly recommend this book! Honestly, if you can, see if you can pick it up in hardcover. I did, and I'd say I more than got my money's worth.

Hi hi! Can I request for the emotion/palette challenge? 👉👈💕
I have 2, you can pick just one, couldn't decide:
Yami Marik: 10 E - Mwah
Marik Ishtar: 4 C - Kin list
Thank you!! 🖤
How could I pick! You made such fun choices I couldn't decide so I just had to do both 😭
Tumblr media
This palate was super pretty but as it turns out I don't possess the mental strength to draw koshary, the very thing I imagined he was aiming his heart eyes at, so have 4 versions of me messing about with how I wanted to use the colours 😭 I like the final variant marik best so maybe I will pursue that one further!

Thank you so much for the ask, I had a great time and I was especially excited to see yami marik in that expression aaaaa I had an exact vision for how I wanted it to look and I'm super happy with it! I hope you enjoy! 💜💜

My 2022 Books I Read List
This year I wrote out my thoughts after finishing the book instead of last year when I did a bunch at once just looking at my shelf.
To start the year I read The Jasmine Throne, by Tasha Suri, this one was a lot of fun to read. I love a good fantasy with a magic system that one can understand but that still has really cool elements to it! I loved the main characters a lot, they were able to stand out from each other, without making me root for one over the other. All the POV characters clearly had reasons for doing what they did, and so I never found myself frustrated when characters wouldn’t tell someone something because it gave me the reason why. All in all, I’m very excited for the sequel which is currently on my wish list – I want to see where things go from here!
Vox Machina: Kith and Kin, by Marike Nijkamp. It was so nice being able to get back into the world of Exandria and Tal’Dorei, getting to see more of the twins was bittersweet – knowing what ends up happening to Vax – but I really enjoyed seeing them go on an adventure. Nijkamp really captured a lot of the spirit of the twins, there were funny moments, and sad ones, and it really felt like it could have been a oneshot episode! The plot was interesting too, as it combined some elements of the backstory that we knew from either actual episodes or Q and A, with a brand-new story. The ending was also fun, with the implication it was about to head right into the graphic novels.
Next up was Aetherbound by E.K. Johnston, this one was outside my typical wheelhouse – I’m usually a fantasy person, but this one had a lot more sci-fi in it. I did end up enjoying it a lot! I have heard a lot of good things about Johnstons writing, and it definitely showed in this one. I got to the end and really wanted more, I hope there’s a continuation at some point in the future – but regardless, it was a nice one. One thing I will point out, Johnstons experience as a Star Wars author is something I noticed in this as there was a calorie-based “magic” system, and parts of it did remind me of the Force which was a bit of fun. I will put a warning on this one though for peoples mental health – counting calories, and bodily autonomy are big factors in the story. This does mean some characters do end up being forced to do things they don’t want to – there is a helpful warning at the beginning of the book, and it’s nice to see trigger warnings at the beginning of a novel.
You may recall in my last roundup I was a little disappointed by one of the novellas I read. This time I’m pleased to say that The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo was a treat to read from start to finish. The way the story was told was really cool – the protagonist is recording the items in the place they are staying, while being told stories and learning about the past from the woman living there. The tense changes from third person focused on the protag to first person during the stories, normally tense changes are jarring, but it really worked well here!  I’ll throw a quick warning for misogyny, not the main cast but a general history-related poor treatment of women. This is part of a series that is apparently able to be read without the others – but the next release is on my wish list and may show up later on the list!
I have now finished a series I began near the start of the pandemic; I have finished The Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman with the final book, The Untold Story. I’m going to look at this one as a whole, rather than just the conclusion – it’s a little bit easier for me that way. This is an 8 book long series that I genuinely enjoyed each book. Each one has its own little adventure, that can be wrapped up at the end, but there is a clearly an overarching story. I love how smart the characters are – and as the world of the novel revolves around stories and character-archetypes the fact they play into tropes both makes sense and isn’t annoying. The one thing that was annoying… gets an explanation in the last novel which was actually really good. The main couple is also really nice with each other, it starts with one in a position of power over the other – but she clearly explains that while she likes him as long as she is his superior nothing is going to happen. And while it is clear they are into each other; it does stay platonic until she is no longer in charge of him which I personally appreciate.  The series ends on a note where if nothing else happens I’ll be content – but the author also left it so there is the potential for more.
Next, we talk about Before Mars by Emma Newman. This one… was a lot. It’s a sci-fi novel but the sci-fi isn’t the main focus – it’s more about conspiracies and post-partum depression and all in all was not a feel-good novel. I don’t mind if something get’s dark – but I’m really just a happy-endings kinda person so this was rough to get through. I’m also not sure how I felt about the portrayal of mental health issues like paranoia in it because the author went with the “but there really was a secret conspiracy… both times!” with it. Like… paranoia is a real condition and I’m not sure that this was the best way to go about it? There was also cheating which… I really don’t like to read about. I feel like it would be a better read for a different person than me, it just wasn’t what I look for in a novel.
Up next is Daughter of the Moon Goddess, by Sue Lynn Tan, this is one of those cases where it has a few tropes that I really don’t like – so the fact that I did enjoy this as much as I did was surprising to me. I think I’m going to structure this one in a way that will let met keep the surprises, because even though there were things I didn’t like, I still think it’s a good read. I’m also going to cover what were the negatives to me and then the positives. I’m not super fond of first person, but it’s definitely something I can look past, but tragically this novel also had a love triangle – and not in the fun way. Like, a love triangle can be good, and there were parts where I didn’t mind it… but it felt like it dragged on for a bit too long, I know that’s the appeal of a love triangle to a lot of people, but it doesn’t work for me. Also, and minor spoiler here – there is a type of magic that influences the mind, and when one of the villain characters brings up that it used to be used to help people with like, genuine mental health issues, the protagonist basically says “controlling people is bad and wrong” but like, this is after she used wind magic to suffocate a guy so… There is also a point where one character is revealed to have lied about their backstory, and then gets mad at another for doing the same, and when called out on it, says “it’s different” and like, yeah it was, but I don’t think… it felt quite good? The positives are the imagery, it’s a very nicely worded novel, and even without the love triangle stuff the plot was really good! The protagonists drive to help her mother is such a compelling motivation, and I spent the novel eagerly anticipating this happening. I was also super having a good time with the worldbuilding and the fighting scenes, I always have a huge respect for people who can actually write a fight scene and have it 1) make sense, and 2) actually convey the feeling of fighting. The stories internal logic always makes good sense, like, I get why the characters do what they do (except the love triangle, but I thinks that’s a me thing). There’s a point near the last third, it seems like everything is about to be solved – and then they pull a twist. I love that in a novel! From what I can tell there seems to be plans for it to be part of a duology, and while there was some stuff left unfinished it could be read as a standalone. I’ll probably get the second novel when it comes out, but I’ll have to think a bit more on if it seems like it will just be more of the same. And who knows, maybe it will fix some of the issues I had with the first one.
For something a little different, I went with a webnovel next, finally giving in and reading Liu Yao: Revitalization of the Fuyao Sect by Priest. Holy shit did I ever enjoy this one. Listen, listen the found family trope is probably one of the greatest inventions of all time and it was masterful here. It focused a lot more on actual cultivation then in other webnovels I read so I did have to go look up some stuff sometimes, but that’s on me and not the novel – for the target audience this would be stuff they already know! As stated, there is a found family aspect, a lot about forgiveness and philosophy in this one. I was rooting for the kids the whole time I read it, I just love how much you could tell they all cared about each other! Towards the end I had a bit of trouble understanding a few things – again I’m pretty sure that was an issue on my part – and I think it switched translators a couple of times so that threw me off a bit, but it made me feel happy when I finished it! There’s a lot to like in this one – and now I’m pretty excited to hear there’s a donghua in the works? I am going to have to watch that for sure when it’s released. It’s very much a coming-of-age sort of story, and even though I’m a little older than that is usually the demographic for, I would recommend it for sure. Uh. I will include a gore warning though, there is fighting and some deaths and while there was ultimately a happy ending for the core cast – there was still sadness there.
I mentioned earlier in the book roundup how much I liked Nghi Vo’s novella, and now that I’ve read the next in the adventure, When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain, I am absolutely going to look for more of their work. I love the way that the story-within-a-story works, and how both parts are equally compelling, rather than one acting as a stage for the other. They can be read as a standalone which is nice, but I’m happy to have the knowledge I gained from the previous installment to help with the world building. And how great is the world building? It’s incredible how rich a world Vo writes with the shorter length of both novellas. It never feels forced or too wordy or too confusing, it feels very natural. I don’t want to spoil anything about this one, because I feel it would ruin some of the tension within the work, but I would for sure say if you see it, read it. And then keep an eye out for the next book in The Singing Hills Cycle, (It’s going to be Into the Riverlands).
After that I caught the ‘rona, so I spent some time in lock-up where I focused on reading Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko. I read the first book in the series Raybearer last year and I am happy to say I enjoyed the conclusion just as much as the first. Listen, it was a very solid follow up to everything we went through in Raybearer, it did a really good job of exploring the effects of the first book on the world and individuals. I also appreciated how the trauma that characters went through was addressed in how they acted here. One of the downsides that carried over from the other novel would be that because of how many people are involved in the story – a lot of the characters don’t really get very many scenes are just kind of there. They don’t have much of a personality. Now, there is a more “core” cast of characters who get to have focus on them and get to have more personality, and I understand that by virtue of having so many characters needed for the plot that this happens – but with how rich the world and magic system was it did kind of stand out. All-in-all, it’s a lovely series about all the different types of love we can have for other people, and doing what we can to keep improving the world around us, written in a style that really builds the world into one you can see.
Still in confinement, I finished all of Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim in one day. I love a good fairytale re-telling and this is one had some absolute great twists in it. I’ve mentioned before how much I love stories where love, platonic or otherwise, is a central focus – and here it’s primarily the love between family, with some romance thrown in for good measure. I loved the writing style in this one, it really helped paint a picture of the world. I know I tend to keep these reviews/round-ups vague, but man do I feel like this is a good read to go into without knowing the twists. A quick note though, I didn’t realize until I got to the end and noticed there wasn’t enough pages to finish up the story – this is book one of two. If you don’t like waiting for sequels, make sure to have book two, The Dragons Promise, on hand. I know it’s on my list to order once it releases.  I’ve absolutely put Lims series Blood of Stars in my to-order list so here’s hoping I get out of isolation soon so I can get some more books in my home.
At this point in the year I was free of covid, but a combination of post-covid and stress led to me developing some breathing and heart issues and I had to quit my job to take care of my health for a bit. I decided to go for something with a younger audience in mind so I could relax a bit, and read Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao. Much like their earlier novel Iron Widow, it’s a fun blend of historical information, magi-tech, and folklore. Also like their previous novel, there was some fun banter between the characters. I hesitate to describe books as X-meets-Y, because I feel that usually does a disservice to the new and different themes introduced, but as Zhao mentions Kazuki Takahashi (rest in peace) in the acknowledgements – saying that this was a kind of Percy Jackson meets Yu-Gi-Oh vibes wouldn’t be entirely wrong. It does end on a cliff-hanger, but it was still a fun adventure to go on. It did have a few heavier moments than I had anticipated from the premise, and there is a fun twist, reverse twist, and conclusion to a character arc near the last third.
Then I read The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh, this was a farytale retelling about love. Like, there was romance, and family love and friendship and the main thing I was thinking of when I wasn’t just loving the worldbuilding and the character dynamics was this… gosh how do I put this. There was a palpable feeling of love throughout. Not just the in-universe types of love between the characters, but the love that Oh put into this world. I read it over the course of a stormy day which helped with the atmosphere of the story and so that was a lot of fun too. I liked how the characters all had a solid dynamic outside of the main character, but how we still get to see her form bonds with them and how that interacts with the previous relationships. I’ll say that the romance part may have happened pretty quickly compared to the length of the novel – but that’s just a part of any novel really. I just really enjoyed reading this one, I liked the themes and the tone, it was genuinely a good time to get through. Quick warning for death and child death, because while it is not like, super drawn out and dramatized it does play a role in the story. It was the sort of tale where it feels complete, it feels done, and I’m happy with the ending – but I’d still like to know what the characters get up to afterwards.
I don’t want to say that I went through a three-moth-or-so book slump, since it was more me taking some mental health time and painting – but there was a huge gap before I read The Blood of Stars duology by Elizabeth Lim, Spin the Dawn and Unravel the Dusk. As mentioned earlier, Lim won me over with Six Crimson Cranes so it was with excitement that I started this duology – having really enjoyed her imagery and descriptions. I didn’t realize that these stories take place in the same world until I saw the map in Spin the Dawn, but there was some fun things that were mentioned here that had me !!! because I remembered that being mentioned about the world earlier. You can however, read them completely independently of each other and still enjoy it just as much. It’s another fairy tale retelling, but you can’t quite figure out what story until the very end of the second novel. I recommend making sure that you have both when you start in order to not leave yourself with the cliff-hanger too long, lol. I liked the switch-up that goes down during the midpoint of both books, the point where the goalposts shift and our heroine has to adjust to whatever new task she has to beat. It even had me tearing up near the ending of the second book – though that may have been because I had been reading for a few hours at that point, was exhausted from the day, and just wanted to see them get the happy ending that they had worked so hard for. I will say, and this is not a criticism since Lim 1) seems to go about it differently and 2) I haven’t finished The Dragons Promise, there is the fact that both series are about a youngest daughter, who loves her older brothers, has a dead mother, a father who loves her, and goes on her quest in part because of her love for her family, and then *spoilers*. I still enjoyed it greatly, but I just wanted to point that out. I would still love to see more from Lim in this world, either in another continent or time.
This brings us to The Dragons Promise, finishing up this little Elizabeth-Lim-athon of reading, I was so excited to get into this one – I really wanted to see how this adventure would end! So first off – remember how I said it didn’t matter if you wanted to read them independently? Yeah, never mind that, lol, I guess since it had been such a while since I read Six Crimson Cranes I forgot how closely tied they were. I will also bring up that that earlier criticism of the stories being very similar still rings true – the endings also had some of the same sort of events play out. I still very much enjoyed it, and there were enough differences that even having just read The Blood of Stars duology I wasn’t too off-put by it. This one did take me a bit longer to read then the first one – but I think that’s just because there was a bit of a love triangle near the first half (it was solved and handled fairly well, and I think that it was a good conclusion to the earlier dynamic of the characters involved) and by this point it was pretty well established who the protagonist would end up with. While a lot of the descriptions were pretty – in terms of how they would work there was some confusion on my part. It is a fairytale though so allowances can be made. The ending does feel a bit of a downer considering this duology is the one that takes place first – so knowing that one of the villains returns it feels like the heroes didn’t entirely win. And it still comes at a cost. It was still very good to read though. I don’t know which duology I would recommend reading first to someone going in fresh – in-universe chronological or by publishing – I think either would have its merits. Maybe try Blood of Stars second, I think the in-universe timeline would be fun and tell a complete story. Then I started a new job as we come upon December – but that didn’t stop me from starting The Oleander Sword by Tasha Suri – the sequel to The Jasmine Throne, bringing this year to a close with the series that began it. Now right out the gate I need to bring up that this was not the end of the story – there is going to be another book, and I feel like the story deserves it. It continues where we left of, and manages to go even further into the lore of the world and the motivations that drive the characters. I really love the sort of imagery that Suri uses – there are some good horror-ish scenes that it worked so well that I had a little shiver after reading. It was all-in-all very good. I’m very excited to see where we go from here though, just based off of some of the plot twists we go near the end and certain character actions and reactions. I know that often-times the second book in a trilogy suffers from the fate of being a noticeable “in-between” book and suffers from not being able to be it’s own part, but Suri managed to avoid that and I am so grateful that this one turned out as good as it did. Time to wait on the third part and hope that we reach a satisfying conclusion.
