If you go to Sony Hall in New York City to see a concert—as my beloved and I did yesterday—you’ll be greeted at the door by this massive display of Sony artifacts—electronics and albums put out by the company over the years. I have a soft spot in my heart for the 1990s section’s MiniDisc of Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” album—because the one in the display used to be mine. I bought a stack of maybe 10 MiniDiscs at a garage sale for $2 and after I eventually realized that no, I was never going to buy an MD player, I threw them on Discogs for stupid money…and a few weeks later, a woman contacted me about the Carey one, asking to buy it and could I overnight it? I said sure—and she gave me her address as Sony’s NYC HQ. I couldn’t help but ask why Sony needed one if they surely had one in a closet somewhere and she responded that it was for a corporate display. Knowing it would be seen somewhere in a giant office building, I took some car headlight buffing compound and shined it up, taking out the most infinitesimal scratches, and sent it to her. Fast-forward a few years, I went to Sony Hall one night, and there was a Sony corporate display with a familiar MiniDisc in it—I’m certain it’s the one I sold them. Glad I shined it up. So we went to see jamband Pink Talking Fish last night, covering Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish, and it’s such a hairbrained idea that it works. A good night out! #sonyhall #sony #mariahcarey #talkingheads #pinkfloyd #phish #pinktalkingfish #livemusic #concert #minidisc https://www.instagram.com/p/CqN4b5FubCJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
The Emancipation (I Get From Love) of Angie (12/30)
On this very day, nineteen years ago
The artist of my life, Mariah Carey
released what many consider her comeback album
The Emancipation of Mimi
on the very same day my best friend and twin flame, Angela Giaimo
became emancipated from childhood.
I have never been very spiritual.
I'm not Ace of Base; I struggle to see the signs.
And I'm unsure what I believe about this universe
but here are some things I know coincide:
Mariah Carey and Angela Giaimo are both Aries.
Neither Mariah Carey nor Angela Giaimo have middle names.
Mariah became my favorite artist primarily because of lyrics
and Angela and I first bonded over us both being lyrics girlies.
Like Mariah, Angela is an amazing writer and musically inclined.
I tried to get my ex-best friend that I nicknamed "MiMi" to use
The Emancipation of Mimi as the theme for her 18th birthday,
just two months after Angela's 18th.
That same ex-best friend betrayed Angela,
and her treachery brought Angela and I closer
because I was on her side, the correct side.
I never knew Mariah's album came out on Angela's birthday until today,
the number of years later that is the same as my favorite number.
When it comes to Angela,
It has never been a question that our connection is inherent.
I would not scoff at the concept of it being ancestral and supernatural.
And while I have no mystical gifts that will tell me she is pregnant
the way her brujería informed her of Saviour's impending arrival,
I can sense that it's by more than chance that she's tattooed on my spirit.
And why I love Angela Giaimo with my whole soul,
even more than I love Mariah Carey.
I meant to post this yesterday but.....
Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" was released May 15th 1990; from her debut self titled album "Mariah Carey".
DID YOU KNOW: When auditioning for JIVE Records, Aaliyah sang this very song and blew the records execs away. Unfortunately, because of her age, they turned her away because they didn't know how to market her as an act. Barry would then discover (you-know-who) and use him as a bargaining chip to get Aaliyah in.
Aaliyah would then open the doors for other young female solo acts to follow.
