Futari de Koi wo Suru Riyuu: First Impressions

Futari de Koi wo Suru Riyuu or Futakoi for short is an ongoing shōjo manga series about a girl who falls in love with a boy named Aiji Okaniwa after he helps her when a man was rude with her on the train. She discovers that they’re in the same school and tries to get closer to him but his best friend, Jun, tries to put them apart, while later developing a friendship & romantic feelings towards her. Despite that I am not a big fan of love triangles, I decided to give it a shot because the art is really pretty and because sometimes what a girl needs is sparkly cute art with big pretty eyes.

The manga is being published in Margaret Magazine in Japanese with no current official translations to English. Proceed with care:

A great key to understand a story is to understand it’s title. I am not even close to being capable of really understanding japanese (my knowledge is limited to some words I captured the meaning by watching way too much anime) but google gave me a hand: The reason why two people fall in love. Despite not being a really different thing on the market, Futakoi manages to not be shallow, bringing a special message to its readers, despite a few unfortunate aspects, that I will come back to later.

Our main protagonist, the female lead, Urara Andou is a really good girl, who is always worried about not being a bother to her friends and that has a hard time being honest about her romantic feelings. In the past, Andou-chan crushed in a boy but never had the courage to speak up for her feelings, which made her very frustated and hurt later on, so she decides (but still struggles) that this time she will bring up the courage and confess to her senpai.

Aijin helps her out, just as Misono (who already started developing feelings by her at this point), to learn how to play basketball, so her classmates wouldn’t get disappointed on her in a school event. Both boys start showing their affection towards Urara.

While Aijin and Urara were in his favorite spot, Aijin’s ex appears and, to this point forward, their relationship starts to sink. As it was already hinted, Aijin still loved his ex and after Urara confesses, she even encourages him to go after her, having already noticed that she couldn’t be the girl in his heart.

The message that is conveyed in this first part of the manga is that even if we think things won’t work out, it’s better to be honest and face our feelings, instead of risking ourselves in the “game” of trying not to get hurt: you might avoid a possible rejection, but not the bitterness of regret.

Misono comforts Andou and they (once again) share adorable moments and with all Andou’s thoughts about her feelings towards him and their friendship, it’s natural to expect that she will soon get better and move on from her feelings towards his childhood friend (Aijin) but... that’s not what happens. We were pushed ONCE again to a love triangle, now with a boy from other school. Misono ended up as the second option of the second option. This second love triangle is still not ended, so I will refrain myself from judging it harshly before it’s conclusion, but I need to say how disappointing it is. It’s clear who will end up with Andou, what wasn’t so much of a clear thing when we had Andou x Aijin x Jun.

The author could’ve explored more deeply why Aijin and his ex broken up and how was their relationship, but it remained unanswered and (apparently) Jun’s and Aijin’s friendship, since CHILDHOOD, couldn’t survive after Aijin made Urara cry. I would have also loved to see Urara getting back to her feet and doing her best to move on while she grows closer to Misono and, just as she’s doing know in the manga, learning what love is and seeking her sister for help.

Before the goodbye, I would like to comment about two things:

1) this manga could have such a GREAT anime opening — it would be so colorful and cute!!!

2) a tiny detail about the manga that I really enjoyed: Andou’s and her sister’s relationship (i live for siblings relationships):

Every day I curse Injustice for giving us literally the best Suicide Squad lineup in decades just for a quick joke then killing them all

Not joking all these characters are so interesting, distinct and fun with them all having completely different types of engaging motivations and pathos, completely unique looks and power sets and there are so many different types of neuro divergence and mental illness within them you could make such an engaging story about these villains who are all treated as jokes being forced together.
