In Defence of c!Niki - a Four Part Analysis of Every Arc
People who didn’t watch C!Niki see, in the fandom, a big sister type character with girlboss energy who wants to kill a child. Niki isn’t that. She has a well-written narrative which focusses a lot on her relationships with others. Here is me breaking it down!
PART ONE: c!Niki’s Early Days
PART TWO: c!Niki’s Rebellion (you are here)
PART THREE: c!Niki’s Disillusionment
PART FOUR: c!Niki’s Healing
Unfortunately Niki’s pov of Election Day is one of the vods we no longer have and I’m devastated because I think it’s so important. When Schlatt was exiling Wilbur and Tommy, Niki was the first one to protest. While everyone else was stunned, making shocked remarks, or joining Schlatt’s side and going to attack Wilbur and Tommy, Niki shouted at him. Others laughed or were just silent. But not Niki. Never Niki.
And this becomes a running theme for her character, the only one willing to stand up against Schlatt out in the open. Of course, Tubbo and Fundy were going against him too, but they did so from the shadows. From the get go, Niki was different. She stood up for her country and remained loyal to it and to Wilbur like she promised she would.
These were her messages to Tubbo while he was taking up the role of Schlatt’s VP. Of course, we know he wasn’t actually on his side, but Niki didn’t know that. He did not answer her first few.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of this, Niki felt alone, not knowing who to trust. And this was the first time that had happened to her on this server, because she had always known who was on what side. Suddenly Niki couldn’t rely on her innate empathy anymore, because being kind wasn’t going to bring her friends back, and she couldn’t understand anyone’s motives because everyone was deliberately hiding them. She was desperate for an ally, and this was the first time she didn’t feel at home in L’Manberg.
This is something that needs to be kept in mind, that Niki had been feeling lonely this early on. A lot of people look at her doomsday arc and think it was a sudden change of heart with no build up or reasoning. But the seeds of that breakdown had been planted as early on as Election Day.
Still, she stayed loyal. She kicked up a fuss, refused to do as she was told, knowing the consequences. She refused to tear down the walls. She screamed that Schlatt had no right to do what he was doing. She yelled at Fundy as he tore down her flag. She would later get taxed, imprisoned, and chased down out of the nation. But she didn’t back down regardless.
S: I’m dying of hunger
N: you shouldn’t have betrayed the only baker in this-
S: oh my god, can you be quiet?
Q: Niki! Niki! You know how to bake, would you like to bake for us?
N: Not for you.
<Eret laughs>
N: Not for this government
J: that’s quite the catering gig you’re turning down, but..
Q: yeah- listen! Listen! We are very hungry people, we are very hungry people
N: I hope you starve.
This is a turning point for Niki, as she abandoned her bakery after this. She did not bake again for a very, very long time.
Her only allies were Eret - who couldn’t do much as they weren’t a citizen and many people didn’t trust her. And HBomb - who helped her gather resources for her resistance but ultimately operated in the shadows. It was support, and her gratefulness for those two characters is proven time and time again after this, but it wasn’t that much. And it had little weight compared to all the betrayals she was soon to face.
One of those betrayals was Fundy. Niki would later be told he didn’t mean any of this, but I don’t think she was ever able to get over it. Partly because there were some things he genuinely meant, when he said them.
F: Schlatt has risen on top of everything.
N: he will fall. He-
F: why resist?
N: because he is not the-
<Schlatt joins the game>
N: oh my god..
F: my leader! My leader!
N: I think I need to leave. Because today is tax day and I don’t- I’m not going to pay the taxes.
F: im about to refurnish the flag, Niki!
N: no you will not! Fundy, leave the flag alone, you already destroyed everything! What do you want more?! What do you want more?!
F: what I want? Is total domination
N: i trusted you.. I trusted you, I thought we would bring peace! […] we worked so hard for the independence of this nation, and you just-
F: Oh, independence you keep!
N: theres no independence with a tyrannist!
Niki felt Fundy had lied to her and later said she was glad that Coconut2020 hadn’t won, if this was what Fundy did with power.
Within the same conversation, this.
N: Wilbur is your father!
F: Wilbur ridiculed me. Wilbur patronised me for years.
N: he just wanted to keep you safe!
F: Wilbur.. was a powerless fool.
N: don’t you dare say that!
I hate to be a broken record, but she kept her promise, didn’t she?
Speaking of Wilbur,
W: we’re in too much of a hot position right now to take in everyone from every sort of- like- person we need into our new, sort of, cave.. so you’re gonna have to hold out in Manberg a little bit longer, is that okay?
N: .. of course.. I will. Take- take care, Wil..
W: thank you.
She sat in silence for a few seconds after that. Now, Wilbur was not abandoning Niki here. He was trying to keep himself, Pogtopia, and Niki safe. But what is she supposed to do, after believing he’d get her out of there? Niki had been feeling abandoned and lost and alone and betrayed, the fact that he couldn’t help was rubbing salt in the wound of everything else that had happened in Manberg already.
After, she moved out of Manberg into Tommy’s holiday home where she found Henry.
N: im not gonna be that lonely.. Henry- I will do everything to protect you, okay? We have each other. We’re- I don’t know who is on our side Henry, I don’t know who is on our side right now, but- <laughs as Henry turns> don’t turn away from me! Tommy is fine. Tommy is okay. And you will get back- get back with him. Soon. Very soon. Okay, Henry? <Henry looks around> I know you’re looking for him! I wish I could lead you to him and I wish I could show you, but we have to- we have to stay here for now. We have to stay here for now. You and me. We’re strong, okay? We’re strong.
It’s obvious Niki is trying to reassure herself. She telling this cow everything she desperately needs to hear in that moment. ‘I will do everything to protect you’ is something she wants someone to tell her. And ‘you will get back with him very soon’, which is what she wants to happen. And of course, ‘we’re strong’. It sparked a new hope into her. A new life. She felt safer.
This is when Niki wrote Dear Friend, and if it is wanted I can write a full analysis of that, but the main thing is that it was a cry for help. Niki was beginning to get incredibly burned out being the only one continuing to fight, having no idea what else she could do, and terrified for her life in the place she used to feel safest in. I wish we knew who ‘Dear Friend’ was. If anyone has theories I’d love to hear them.
She was scared, she felt alone. This marked the beginning of Niki’s darkest point in her life, and it marked the beginning of her losing herself.

So.
With c!Wilbur’s apologies to c!Techno, and Techno’s claims of being lied to about Pogtopia’s plans on reinstating L’manburg as a country, and how he was betrayed. Let me remind you of a moment.
A conversation between c!Techno and c!BBH which occurred before Tubbo and Quackity told Techno about their plans on reinstating the L’manburg government, and before there was a war, and most certainly before this ‘surprise’ betrayal of them reinstating a government and assigning a president.
Badboyhalo was talking to Technoblade about the Badlands. He was talking about if Techno would be okay with an anarchist group [the Badlands], and questioned what Techno’s plans are.
Techno states that he’s fine with an anarchy, that he’s not okay with killing cats, and then he states this;
"I want to leave a smoking crater from which not only will Manberg never recover, but from which no new country can rise in its place. History will FORGET that a country ever existed in this area."
Again. This is before each and every excuse c!Techno has given to Tommy, Wilbur, Quackity, Tubbo, literally everyone, on why he’d set withers on this place.
He claims he was betrayed by them reinstating government. He claims that Wilbur had lied to him and that he didn’t know about them planning to reinstate L’manburg. Despite evidence of Quackity and Tubbo literally telling him.
But maybe you can brush it off on he wasn’t listening, or he didn’t take them seriously.
But this absolutely proves that he was planning on blowing this place up regardless of whether they reinstated government or not. This is evidence is before Quackity and Tubbo tell him. This is before the war. This is before the betrayal. He was already planning on blowing the place to smithereens even before Dream had offered and egged him on. He was never going to let this place go peacefully. He was never going to give a new government a chance of being peaceful. It was deemed corrupt before it's creation.
And this behavior is repeated with Doomsday when Tommy works with him. In his To-Do List, he had always had 'destroy L’manburg' listed at the top. Every time Tommy would say he didn’t want to destroy L’manburg, or said he just wanted his discs he didn’t want revenge, Techno would change subjects until he stopped bringing it up all together (vocally, to Tommy. visually he’d highlight the destroy line in the list to chat every time he opened up the book).
It didn’t matter, it would have never mattered. Doomsday was going to happen no matter what. Dream planned on destroying the place, Techno planned on destroying the place. There would have been no way to convince them otherwise, and Tommy had tried every time it was brought up. It just so happened that a perfect opportunity and cover arose for it to happen then and there.
Tommy’s “betrayal” of Techno by siding with Tubbo (mind you, he’d done so because he realized he no longer wanted to play this cycle of revenge, and he didn’t want to be a bad person, and he didn’t want to hurt his best friend. He chose Tubbo over Techno, just as Techno would’ve chosen Phil over everything in the same situation).
Tommy’s “betrayal” of Techno was used as a scapegoat reasoning for his destruction, turning a plan that would’ve happened no matter what, into a ‘lesson’ to be ‘taught’ and an ‘act’ of ‘revenge’.
This is exactly the same as what happened on November 16th. Wilbur was the only official ‘traitor’ to L’manburg deemed by Dream, as Wilbur had been the one on this spiral and dead set plan to blow the place up, egged on and encouraged by Dream. He had no idea about withers, or that Techno had betrayed them in the first place until recently. He had no idea. He still doesn't even know they had a part in Doomsday. He still thinks it was all his fault.
Techno on the other hand, had known before there could have even been talks of betrayal, or before Wilbur could have even ‘lied’ to him. His mind was already made up.
Pogtopia’s “betrayal” of Techno was used as a scapegoat reasoning for his deadset plans of destruction, that was planned far in advance of the war.
They are scapegoats that he still uses to this day, and has even built upon adding details such as adding that Wilbur and Tommy had deliberately lied to him, or had deliberately tried to hurt him, which is simply false. In both of these situations, he’s planned from the beginning what he had wanted to do, regardless of how these “betrayals” made him feel.
***This post is tagged appropriately with critical tags, so if you don’t want to see or hear c!techno critical, you should block the tags. This isn’t a post for debate or argument, it’s an analysis and well, critical post. That’s the point. Thank you. 💛

I really like the idea that people didn’t know how many lives c!Wilbur had and so when he got shot in Manberg for the longest time everyone thought he permanently died. Think C!Wilbur being turned into a martyr by the tiny underground rebellion, a huge public “funeral” hosted by c!Schlatt and c!Quackity, Wilbur Soot lives graffiti on buildings.

I was suddenly reminded of some very silly discourse. So uh...
Here's the thing. I couldn't care less about takes that Doomsday was justified. I don’t entirely agree, but there's a few legitimate moral arguments there. War crimes this, narrative framing that, cycle of vengeance whatever. We can throw words around all day (and oh boy, we already have).
What irritates me, though, is when double standards are applied to make c!Wilbur look worse by comparison.
If c!Techno was justified in destroying L'Manberg because their government imprisoned his friend and attempted to execute him despite him having renounced his previous violence against the country, then you cannot condemn c!Wilbur's coup (questionable terminology, since nearly every citizen supported him by the end and c!Schlatt dropped dead of his own accord) prior to the explosions, either. Because c!Schlatt's very first decree as president was to violently exile his political opponents - leading to one's canonical death - and order them to be further hunted by someone he knew to be a close friend of theirs (who he eventually also successfully publicly executed without trial and via deception), despite them having ceded power peacefully and committed no harm whatsoever against him before that point.
If you argue that the difference is that c!Wilbur was deceptive while the Doomsday Trio were not, then... first of all, c!Dream by his own admission was nothing but deceptive during Season 2, up to and including the events at the ruined community house. And second, for all c!Wilbur's wrongs, dishonesty about this plot was the least of these. I'm not sure how he was caricatured so badly after his death, but he was consistently open and honest about his desire to blow up L'Manberg and himself with it, to the point of suggesting this plan of action in full earshot of all of Pogtopia while they were preparing for war. He even called the bombs a Chekhov's Gun, referring to a weapon displayed in plain sight that everyone ought to take note of and brace for. The only moment of arguable deception about this plot was allowing others to believe he had given up on it, which c!Dream (the only other person who knew 100% of this plan) smugly confirmed was not the case only seconds prior to the blast.
And that brings me to the final point. If you argue that c!Wilbur's actions on the 16th were worse than the Doomsday Trio's because they would have had a higher death count if the Dream SMP had civilians (which is a fruitless argument with no textual backing because the medium of Minecraft is not designed to convey the existence of civilians), then you have to acknowledge that c!Dream and c!Techno were both aware and enthusiastic accomplices to the plot to destroy Manberg, having both offered weapons of mass destruction to his cause, privately agreed that wiping the slate clean was the best option, celebrated the explosions, and participated in additional destruction after the first round of bombs was set off (including lots more evidence here because for Some Strange Reason, c!Techno’s knowledge of this plan is constantly ignored or excused). In fact, c!Techno and c!Dream both began attacking before c!Wilbur set off the bombs. They are culpable in everything that happened on the 16th, including its hypothetical death count. Erasing their involvement while comparing the two events, just to make some point about c!Wilbur’s morality in contrast to theirs, is incredibly disingenuous.
Regardless of how one feels about the individual events, let's not pretend that the men who reduced a city to rubble twice have any moral superiority just because round two came with a 23-and-a-half hours long eviction notice.
