If sf asks, “what if the machine had a different social arrangement?” then steampunk asks, “what would it be like if we could have the productive benefits of machines without their regimentation?”

A craft worker enjoys enormous autonomy. If they get a cramp or need a bathroom break, they can just stop. If they’re hungry, they can eat. If the landscape outside the window is looking especially picturesque, they can stop and contemplate it, or even step out into the fresh air to enjoy it.

Even the most labor-friendly, cooperatively owned assembly line can’t function if its workers do their own thing. The price of factory efficiency is autonomy: a worker in a multi-stage process has other workers upstream and downstream depending on them to maintain the pace and regimentation of the line.

Steampunk is fantasy in that it imagines lone craftspeople working with all the autonomy of the individual mad scientist inventor or tinkerer, but producing goods characteristic of the factories where workers had to check their autonomy at the door.

That’s a utopian vision, one that was especially enticing in the 2000s, when internet collaboration tools allowed thousands of strangers to engage in large, collective endeavors, like writing an encylopedia or an operating system, without any bosses, working at their own pace, relying on version control systems and wiki pages to coordinate their labor while they worked their tools in their crafters’ cottages all over the world.

We support any action that falls within our bounds of ethics, including people who are like annoying church liberals, or people who are like taking things too far with the gasoline and the timers made out of kitchen timers. We support the wide range of it and we try to live our lives as best we can. We recognize that winning is not a condition. It’s not like a win state, right? There’s not a state in which we win. But instead, there’s a reason we say, "Winning at life." We don’t say, "Won at life." We say that we are in the process of winning. And when we fight, and when we build, and when we love one another we win. We live the best lives that we can despite everything that’s happening and we work really hard to help other people live the best lives that they can. Was that a rhetorical question? I’m not sure. Brooke: No, I do feel a little bit…No, honestly, I feel a little bit better now. I really do. Love wins. We win with love. Love and care. And the thing that goes on if me being me as a nurturing, loving person. Inmn: In living like we’re preparing for the world to die, should we also live like the empire could be dying? Margaret: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, like, capitalism has proved a sturdy beast, but it can certainly be slain. And if anything can slay it, it is the nightmare that is coming, that we will all figure out how to come together to handle. Yay.

CJ & Cerberos

The Isle kids think that death is a social construct, and Hades is not really helping. And CJ Hook in particular treats the Underworld like bus station.

CJ Hook is dead. Again. But look, that’s nothing new, and Harriet didn’t even see this time around, so where’s the problem, really?

Death doesn’t want her. He told her so herself, just last week. And the week before that. And about a month ago. Basically at least once a month since she was, like, seven. Maybe five. Whatever. Time is a social construct.

Wait. He death – that’s not entirely correct. He’s the god of the dead, not of the death. That guy is a fucking killjoy – easily outranked and surprisingly flammable killjoy, if CJ says so herself.

CJ shakes her head, getting her hair out of her eyes, and jumps up. Nothing hurts much, and she isn’t actually sure how she went this time, but hey. Someone’s sure to tell her soon, she just hopes it was dramatic enough. She has bigger problems now.

„Spot!“ she cries out and runs to hug the Guardian of the Underworld around one of his necks. Her hands disappear in the thick fur, and as three wet muzzles sniff at her, CJ Hook laughs.

And they say hell hounds are supposed to be terrifying!

…Clearly, they’ve never seen angry Harriet.

Something wet and icky falls on CJ’s neck; her hair; under her cloak. „Hey now, Spot!“ she cries out, „What did we say about your spit on my clothes?!“

The dog’s left head nuzzles her forehead in apology,and the right head licks her all over her neck and jaw and cheek and eye.

„EW!“ CJ laughs, pushing the right head away, and then bringing it close again; her giggles melt fluently into sobs.

That’s, of course, how the Lord of Underworld finds her.

„Again?“ he sighs instead of greeting, and CJ lifts her head from the now-wet fur. „Hi, Uncle Hades!“ she sniffs. The Lord of the Dead does not correct her. Instead, he ask: „Why are you crying, child?“

CJ sniffs again, and then replies, as dramatically as she can muster: „I can’t pet all three of his heads at once!“

„Yes, that is truly horrible,“ facepalms the god, „Now get upland go away, before your siblings learn you’re here. I’m not in the mood today.“

Fun fact: He is never in the mood for the Hook siblings. Which is a fact that none of them are abusing at all.

„Sure thing, Uncle Hades,“ CJ fake-sniffs again,and pets Cerberos’ middle head, „But–“

The god rubs his temple: „What do you mean but, you insolent child?“

„How did I die this time? Was it impressive?“

„How am I supposed to know?“

What a stupid question. CJ glares a bit, and so does Cerberos. Good boy! „You’re a god,duh,,“ she answers. It should be pretty obvious.

„And you should remember how you die–“

CJ giggles. Why should she bother? Death doesn’t want her. And being careful would be no fun at all.

The god sighs again,and tells her she died trying to raid Evil Queens vaults, again. And that they should finally stop fucking trying, and that her brother died for the same thing last week, which scandalises CJ a bit: He didn’t even tell her! Then again, he didn’t succeed, and maybe that’s a good thing. If he got some of Evil Queens gold (for Uma), the docks would never hear the end of it. Yeah, small mercies. Anyway, there is only one thing that matters: „Well, did I succeed this time?“

„Just check your pockets, you little magpie.“

CJ makes a long face, as Uncle Hades is being entirely unhelpful today. Then she makes a long face again, when she check her pockets and realises that while they’re full of interesting and shiny things, there is nothing new in them. But oh– she thought that she lost that butterfly knife. And she wanted to give these earrings to Freddie weeks ago!

„You can go now,“ says the almighty Lord of the Dead, Ruler of Underworld, God of Riches under the Earth, „You know where the doors are.“

She perks up, and he facepalms again,muttering something like „What did I ever do to deserve this kind of suffering?“ and CJ has no idea what he’s talking about, really. She just wants to take Spot here for a little walk! She’s supposed to go back to the Isle anyway, and walks are good for dogs, really, Sammy said that once! (She thinks.)

She tells him so.

„Absolutely not–“ comes the swift reply.

CJ tries (and fails) to hug all Spot’s necks again, and makes doe eyes at the unmovable god. Then she gets an idea: She leans away from the dog and looks at him sadly, as if preparing to say goodbye. Then she perks up and in faux-surprise exclaims: „Oh, look! Spot has red eyes! Like Ettie when she’s angry!“

Out of the corner of her eyes, she sees the god’s flame-hair flicker, and finally, the answer comes: „Take spot for the walk, then.“

Just as she wanted! Yes! „Yes! Thank you, Uncle Hades!“ She jumps up on her feet and runs up to hug the god, who, interestingly enough, rapidly retreats with some interesting curses on his lips. Well, at least CJ thinks those are curses: She can’t speak Greek yet. She should ask Uma to teach her. Surely she would, for her future favourite sister-in-law…

„Come now, Spot!“ CJ exclaims, clapping her hands, „We have places to be! People to scare! Shadow witches to impress!“

Spot obediently gets up, and in a moment, they’re on the Isle again.

And in the moment, the air in the docks fills up with screams of horror as the pirates see little CJ Hook grinning like a madwoman and riding on a three-headed hell hound.

CJ grins just a little bit more, hoping her eyes are burning just as Spot’s are, too, and scratches the middle head behind the ears.

This is awesome.

HmmMMm had to do some thinking about that one

Moonlander : felines of any kind, from cats to big panthers and leopards

There's a lot of strays they feed sometimes, they'd love to adopt one and give them their own cameos in their D&D campaigns and stories, treating like a familiar or a recurring npc

Ace : they love animals in general but I could see them loving goats the most - as random as that might sound haha, baby goats would melt their heart and they would find adult ones so adorable

Would want a dog, no breed in particular; they'd love a big dog to go on runs together but smaller ones could also just hang out in their bags as they carry them around - they like chihuahuas bc they're small and angry and it reminds them of Gumdrop

Gumdrop : hmmm I don't think they care enough to have a favourite animal, that being said, they would have a soft spot for rabbits

They'd say they're not a pet person or they're too busy for one but if you put them alone in a room with an animal, they're cooing at it and spoiling it rotten within seconds - would probably get a rabbit

Iris : idk if that counts but butterflies and birds, especially colourful ones - they always like watching birds fly around when they go hiking

I'm torn bc on one hand, they would love a cat just so they can carry it in their arms and bury their face in their soft tummy but on the other hand, they'd be happy to have a bird to talk to and look at

Killjoy : I feel like they'd love raccoons tbh, dumpy little things with grabby little hands, they'd find them adorable and would probably run after one to try and catch it if they saw one

Look hear me out, but a magpie, crow or raven. Birds that can be taught to steal money and how to talk, Killjoy would definitely teach their bird something like 'fuck you' and torment passersby

I've probably given a slightly different answer to this; but rn (and after having more experience with the shc system/identifying more characters of each), my top 5 would be:

-Double Lion. I have high self-esteem, what can I say xD. But seriously, I love this sorting; even the characters I dislike as *people* are interesting and engaging on screen. They're determined, highly proactive, and principled, for better or for worse. Every story needs one, if you ask me xD. Some favourites: Captain Flint (Black Sails), Rosalee (Underground), Elphaba (Wicked). And of my original characters, Casiphia, Leo, Eva and Rima all have this sorting ^-^

-Lion Snake. They have all that I love of the Lion primary of the Double Lions, and that charm and fluidity I admire of Snake secondaries. They are a damn joy to watch on screen. Lyra (His Dark Materials), Cato (Underground), Elizabeth (Pirates of the Caribbean). And my own beloved Latoya.

-Snake Lion. I just think they're very sexy! Snake devotion + Lion grit and fighting spirit. Caroline (TVD), Buffy Summers, Cersei Lannister, Dutch (Killjoys)... And Meg Masters (I'll answer your ask about this more elaborately tomorrow, but I advance now that this is my sorting for her!). Among my OCs, I really favour this sorting for love interests lol: Gillian, Leena, Azumi.

-Lion Bird. Again: everything I love about Lion primaries + the glee I get of watching characters capable of implementing carefully constructed plans (something that seems like straight up sorcery to me lol). Ruby (SPN), Mulan, Bruce Wayne, Jesse Flores (The Sarah Connor Chronicles). I've shown my love for this sorting plenty in my space opera 'verse lol: Latoya's sister Sade, Ra, the Magpie...

-Double Snake. The devotion of the Snake primary + the playfulness of the Snake secondary. I think they're lovely. Nikita Mears, Bela Talbot (SPN), Root, Selina Kyle, Patrick Jane, Mr. Scott (Black Sails)... And my girl Maryam, Joram, or Gillian's mother.

This is truly the opposite of steampunk. Somehow, our bosses have invented a form of craft-labor — where you work from your own vehicle or home, using equipment you pay for — that has all the humiliations, dangers and petty authoritarianism of the industrial factory.

This is the worst of both worlds. Under the New Deal, factory workers teamed up with progressive regulators to force the owners of giant factories to share the efficiency gains of the assemblyline, creating the “Large-Firm Wage Premium” (where workers at big companies made more money, not less).

Today, the large-firm wage premium is dead. Workers are moving out of the factory, back into their homes (and cars), but those homes and cars are being transformed into factories, thanks to the camera- and mic-studded digital devices that monitor workers more closely than even the meanest, pettiest foreman could.

It needn’t be this way. The Luddites presaged the steampunks, imagining technology to liberate, not to enslave. Technological tools could be labor organizers’ secret weapons, shifting power back towards workers.

So I was watching goblincore tik toks on YouTube, and then I felt very goblin. So I pulled off my socks, grabbed my dad’s trowel (which I’m not technically supposed to use) and went out to the front yard. Instead of taking the stairs off the front porch like a normal person, I climbed down, and started digging.

I found an old nail, two lumps of concrete from when the house was built (over fifty years ago if anyone was wondering) and magpie bones. Upon finding the bones, I was compelled to dance around in the dirt with bare feet while chanting ‘Boney boney bonies!’.

I took the bones to show my parents, but they are total killjoys and made me put the bones in the bin. I was going to rebury the bones, but now I cannot. Also, I feel very vengeful, and I want to steal all the shiny things and I have a hankering for both meat and bread. I would be worried, but these are my usual magpie-ish ways.

Felt like a messy post tonight. First is a Cosplay rough - where I draw the finalish look I want for a costume (this is Felicia from Darkstalkers, look I’m called Kitty for a reason-). It’s only a tiny section of the actual portfolio I make of each character when making costumes. The sketches aren’t perfect nor will they be finalised persay HOWEVER they will be getting a ‘post’ art - the final fashion design, that’ll reflect the final product. Otherwise it’s all design concepts and functionalities, fabrics, costs, etc.

Second is my Katie Killjoy WIP. Like with Lady, it’s going to be finalised on PC and the paper is just a skeleton layer. This page in now covered in notes than what you see here.

Third is the FUCKING CAT WHO WELCOMED HERSELF INTO MY HOME. Meet Tiny. Long story short, I must have a spiritual sign that says ‘catnip dealer’ because cats (and other animals) tend to be drawn to me instantly. She’s not microchipped and I’ve been hunting everywhere for a sign of her owner (if she even has one), including the cat rescue. No leads and I only have one final place to search (once outta isolation) before everything’s dead ends. No one in the local community knows her home, just that she’s everywhere. Some even thought we owned her as she started to get food and hugs from me (all I did one day was sit with her and say “What’s the matter, eh? Tell me allllll about it” and... she really fuckin called my bluff and mewing- since then she’s accepted that we call her tiny and climbs up our door for us. Even yowled until I came outside when she presented me a dead sparrow.)

She lives with us now, and it looks like she’ll be here to stay (she’s fine, like the others, she’s like glue to me) but I want to be at least 90% sure that no ones missing her. We had a black cat visitor for months before finding out he was owned but he just... weirdly preferred my company. We looked for him home for ages until the owners found us - we live closer to each other than we thought. We’re in frequent contact and she was the one suggesting he lives with us if he’s happier. We also have a neighbour cat called Oswald who lives with an old man. Stopped him and my old boy Trav fighting, now Ozzy visits just to get fusses from me before going home. There’s Missy, she’s a grumpy mate who fears people and hisses, but she still runs up to me knowing I always spare safe food for her. We get many other neighbourhood cats and strays - even spent ages looking after a large mother spider and her babies (only one baby lives with us now as the family have moved to find a warmer spot) as well as magpies, pigeons, doves, starlings, foxes, hedgehogs (that... that was fucking awkward finding out-) and even a fuckin badger.

Long story short, THIS is the result of letting me share a home with you. So does the entire fuckin neighbourhood of creatures. My bad. They just know my weakness. The room is a mess as it’s going through total revamp. I’m a mess because I’m a mess lol. Tiny now holds my hands and the others are in the habit of this as well. Cant get shit done but I love them.
