I held Theo's hand in mine as I knocked on the door in front of me.
Looking around again, I couldn't believe I was fucking doing this after trying to avoid getting involved more than I already was but Theo said something to me last night that made sense.
'If you don't go, it will haunt you.'
He was right, I laid awake most nights and wondered how it got so bad, that Pixie found no other way out of whatever was going on in her life, that the only thing she could do was to shoot me.
Her husband had reached out to me the week I was released from hospital, at first I had ignored it once I heard he wanted to apologize for what Pixie had done, after-all, it wasn't his fault, why should he apologize for what she did?
So, I ignored it, until now.
I go to knock again but as I reached out the large door in front of me opens and there stood a man, who had to be Pixie's husband.
I couldn't fucking believe I was doing this but after speaking to the police, they couldn't exactly tell me what pushed Pixie to the edge, without speaking to the husband first, considering how bad the press and news had hounded her family after the incident.
"Logan Martin?" I asked, as the man stared at me with wide eyes, nodding his head.
"Y-Yes," he cleared his throat. "Please... come in."
He held the door open for us and I stepped inside his house with Theo's hand in mine, I took a quick look around and saw that it was just as homey as it looked on the inside, as it did on the outside.
The house was nice, in an expensive part of town, her husband was a doctor and doing well for himself, looking at the house myself right now, I knew that it was Pixie's dream house, from the wood floor to the wallpaper.
Everything reminded me of her from our childhood, as he told me things she had wanted in her house, to things she didn't, like carpet or the colour orange.
"Um, please take a seat," he nervously directed, as I walked with Theo over to the sofa. "Is there anything I can get you? A soda? Water?" he asked as I shook my head.
"No thanks, I'm good," I said, before looking at Theo.
"No, thank you," he said politely as Logan sat down opposite us, looking more nervous than he did when he opened the door.
"You wanted to talk about Pixie?" I didn't wait for the awkward silence, just wanting to get this over with, so I can leave and get on with the rest of my day.
"Yes," he said, looking down at his hands on his lap. "I... wanted to meet you, also I wanted to apologise."
I stared at the man and then sighed.
"Look, you don't need to apologize, I came here to tell you it's not necessary, I forgave Pixie a long time ago."
"Yes... I heard about her and your... past," his jaw clenched, as he lifted his head to look at me. "She told me everything about you, before she... got sick. She didn't hide anything from me, before we got married we went to therapy together and despite her past, I loved her, you know? She worked hard to get clean, we had kids... everything was good until it wasn't."
I looked around his house and saw picture Pixie and her family, her husband and their two young girls, smiling in every single photo, it was hard to sit here and listen and have those photos staring at me.
She looked happy and healthy but I knew Pixie, she had her ups and she had her downs.
"I understand," I forced out, as I squeezed Theo's hand in mine. "She was always a hard woman to please, even as kids."
I shifted in my seat and looked right at him.
"When did it get bad?" I asked him, as he looked at me with pained eyes, before looking away to the wedding ring he still wore on his finger.
"She'd saw you on TV when I had my coworkers over for a BBQ... and something just... changed, she became distant, distracted and very secretive," he closed his eyes tightly, like he remembered everything vividly from that day.
He chuckled, before looking at me with sad eyes.
"I thought she was seeing you again but if anything she became enraged... it only added to my suspicion that she was hiding something."
"We fought and that was the last time I saw her... she had just walked out the door and didn't come back, a few days later I filed a missing persons report but it was hopeless, it was like she vanished."
I think I knew where this was going, after knowing Pixie, I knew how good she was at running away because we did it a lot as kids, only Pixie was better at it than I was, sometimes she'd leave for a week and than show up out of the blue.
"That day..." he mumbled, running his fingers through his hair. "She phoned me... she was out of her mind on something, she didn't make much sense, it was too hard to hear her but what I did understand was that she had found where you lived and was coming to see you."
"I should've known she would do this... I was unable to stop her because I thought I could still save her, b-but she was too far gone, she told me she didn't want to live anymore unless it was with you... t-then she hung up," he cried into his wrist, before sighing and shaking.
"I-I'm sorry..."
Theo had moved from my side and went to sit next to Logan, as I watched him comfort him, as he cried out in front of me.
He loved Pixie, that much I knew just from looking at him and looking at this house, he really cared for her and really tried to help her, which didn't make me feel sorry for Pixie but for him.
Ever since that day, the last time I saw her, I knew she would never be happy, she was too broken, I had tried, just like Logan, I had also tried to save her but in the end it only made me feel broken for failing to do so.
Logan was broken and it was not his fault.
"I'm sorry too," I said slowly, as his red, tear soaked eyes met mine. "I'm sorry for your loss... Pixie was a special woman, she was lucky to have you in her life, despite how it ended, I knew you must've made her happy."
With that being said, Logan cried into his hands as Theo's eyes met mine, a small smile on his lips as he put his hand on Logan's back in comforting motions as he sat beside him, telling him comforting words I couldn't say to him.
Once Logan calmed down, we talked a little more about Pixie and some of the good times they shared before all this mess happened, he showed me photos of her two daughters and all I could think of was how similar her first born's name was to mine.
Maddy.
She looked just like Pixie too, with her same big round innocent eyes.
I was glad Theo convinced me to come here today because of him I got the closure I needed to finally put Pixie to rest in my memories, after almost a decade.
Pixie was my first love and because of her I became a better man and for that I will always remember the good times we shared together.

THE DEATH HUNT IS ON
The North, South, East and West rooms divide in ways that none expected; bring death in a manner that’s pointing in everyone else’s direction. A race against time that puts all in the wake of the Reaper’s scythe. Where tensions rise, creatures; mortal and immortal are forced to solve riddles and puzzles as though they aren’t decades old enemies with blood on their minds.
Within the Laundry Room in the East. A Mer; Queen Aviana Zander lies dead, mutilated for all to see; a prop that assists with the task of escaping the room that begins to flood the closed space from leaking machines; rigged to drown the room and all those standing in it. A code to answer the murderer of the monarch clearer to some than it is others. Lylia Barnett, Lilian Deumos and Azagi despite their differences, tackle the message; solve the order of which the machines need to be switched off, leave on the broken one to allow the wall to shift; lead to a staircase that take them upwards and out of the room...
Meanwhile, North, in the Bar/Dining Room, a sorcerer; renowned Necromancer Zederrin sits still at a table, left carvings to hint at his killer; so some assume. But someone - or something, has laid waste to the powerful magician and in his death lies answers that are overlooked; things staring them in the face that panic and chaos cover all too well. Because poisonous smoke fills the room with speed Iyzk Vissar, Aiden Kinsey, and Haylee Dubois all attempt to decipher the morse code carved into the table, put together it’s message to open the found safe... inside; a wormhole; endless... leads further into the depths of the hotel, and they crawl through in hopes of escaping the smoke and finding an exit...
Upstairs, on the Southside of the hotel, in one of the more recluse of Bedrooms, a horror scene is recreated where Enoch; a Fallen Angel hangs, back muscles spread like bloodied wings where the real ones should be. Claw marks split skin like butter at the front and open up organs to visible view, most dangle from designated cages and spill browning blood onto the floor. With the combined efforts of Zyler Fane, Giselle Stoneheart, Darcy Darkwood, and Luella Edwards, they reorganise the dice; insert the missing ones scattered amongst the room; read it; trigger the completed mechanism and from the far side of the room; the magical lock on the window is released, a ladder is found on the side of the building; at height, their only option is to climb...
In the West Basement, where heat brings down the wallpaper, the creatures battles flames to find an exit to their room around the dead Court Offical; Xantho Vale. Cryptic messages cloud their minds and the fires are unforgiving to those taking too long... it’s not obvious to the ones trying to solve it: Morgana Maddox, Ezekiel “Zeki” Amari, Evanora Bile, Harley Xhanthi all fight against time to get answers; the message rings clear; but not evident in visuals; a sound that is only heard when a sense is turned off; eyes like oil; to see darkness like a demon allows those in the room - the ones not panicked to listen amongst the roaring of flames for whispered message: you cannot see the door, but it is there...
Where they make themselves blind, there’s an opening in jagged basement walls where they can walk through, tackle staircase away from the fire and elsewhere...
AND IT ALL LEADS TO ONE PLACE
In waves, the survivors are forced upwards; to the roof of Elysium Circus; if they were not so worn, injured and hungry, they might have even appreciated the view.
They can almost see all of Calamity beneath ash and smoke; through foggy vision and see all sides of the State and its divide.
But like everything that night, it’s not the most breath-taking sight that meets monstrous eyes. Not like the large stretch of chimney that plays canvas to a new kind of dark artwork; fingers, same as the ones in the very first lockbox are nailed into the bricks; a particular pattern; four of them in fact that form the alchemic symbols that represent far more than anyone knew...
Because if anyone translated them instead; they’d have known to never speak the hexes in each room aloud. And every single one of them did...
It’s not a puzzle anymore; there’s no trickery at play; no final boss that the injured have to stand-off to because they’ve already lost.
All that’s left is to decide who loses the most.
And to remember that some found the answer on a rag long before they knew the question or situation posed... one sacrifice to save the masses ... or so the concise version goes...
Whilst all four hexes have been spoken aloud, activated by the one who set the traps to begin with, formed of severed fingers; the bloodied handiwork already complete, there’s gaps in the completed symbols; four finger sized ones in each hexed symbol.
Funny those puzzle pieces were provided to everyone at the beginning too... only, who’s got control of them? One finger went into each room; every group to decide which of the four hexes are to be completed to allow them to leave Elysium Circus in one piece... And those murders they walked past; ignored in some cases give them the answers to who might deserve to be cursed.
Because they must decide to complete one of the four hexes; each attached to one side of the State of Calamity; each more detrimental to some species than others...
If they don’t... well... what do you think?
Better figure out who deserves to be maimed; what each hex and curse enacts upon Calamity in the last fight of puzzles and all creatures have to agree on it; four rooms with different thoughts about who’s part of the group responsible, but they’ve only got four fingers to complete one of the curses
Unless of course... they want to sacrifice their own fingers to complete more...
MAKE A DECISION; SACRIFICE ONE FOR THE MASSES OR SACRIFICE NONE AND LOSE THEM ALL.
ADMIN NOTE: This is the penultimate part of the Halloween event! The conclusion is up to you from here! But any more drops will just be the result of the decision(s) you make guys! You made it. YOU LIVED. You’re on the Elysium roof and with the fingers each group has from the lobby you must decide which of the hexes/curses you will bring upon Calamity; oops.
All you hard effort and brain juice has brought you here and now, from what you have gathered, discovered and figured you must pit it amongst yourselves who’ll be blamed for the oncoming suffering. Which will it fall on, the East, the North, the South or the West. They don’t all react like you might think they do, so pick wisely...
If nobody picks. You’ll all suffer.
As per usual, any questions about the craziness, please let us know & we’ll fill you in! If you genuinely want to do more than one, please be aware you’ll have to sacrifice characters fingers... no, you cannot reattach these appendages this time around. Even with magic.

The story of revenge and brutal martial arts battles continues as Yan takes a rushed shot at the man who murdered her husband and ruined her life. Also, the drunken history of Damon -- the Dead Legends reigning champion -- is explored, and the tournament kicks off with a match filled with blood and treachery.
So I really am enjoying this book so far. The opening here shows us some background on Yan and who took her in after her parents died in a crash is very illuminating. What I love about this though is that James is able to write this in a way where the reader can see both sides of the coin. Her Grandfather doesn't know anything about raising her and did his best by what he knew. She held resentment and bottled up her anger till it exploded in the scene that takes place here. Y'all should not be sleeping on James, he's a crazy talented writer and his skill and ability to draw you in, engage your mind and plant that seed of desire to know more is extremely strong.
So the way that this is being told is superbly done. With the story & plot development and how we see the sequence of events unfold as well how the reader learns information is done in a way that readers can find themselves relating to even if only a fighter in video games. The character development that we are seeing here is insanely good. With a cast of characters this large and by only really spotlighting a select few to delve into is one smart move. While we don't see much of some, one in this particular issue, we see enough to get the feel for them which while doesn't affect the outcome does not make you feel bad them. When you factor in the pacing and how this brings the twists and turns into play we see how all this creates the ebb & flow for the story. It's wonderfully done and that if flows so easily and naturally while still highlighting the way the book is structured is great to see.
There are references in this issue and a breakdown of our host seen from a few contestants that really make you wonder. This is when the reader will go off-script and think about things that aren't here but could be or are influenced by what we see. That we look and find ways to make this more relatable to our personal lives, let's face it we all do that whether we should or not, as well as find a way to psychoanalyse things ourselves is half the fun.
I have watched Gavin's work grow and evolve over the years and what we are seeing here is a result of the work he's done. His style is unmistakable which I am so happy about and yet the linework is so crisp, clean and tighter than it's ever been before. There really is this electricity to the work and the dynamic way the linework is utilised to really showcase the attention to detail is utterly fantastic to see. Also seeing the pages with the backgrounds and how they show depth perception and scale is really well done. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this marvellous eye for storytelling. The colour work is frakkin amazing as well. I like seeing how the base colour has these various hues and tones utilised to create the shading and shadows. How the colour creates the backgrounds or at least trees and such and allowing the characters remain in focus is smooth. The beads, the wallpaper, Hendrix Gavin not only stretches his wings but he demonstrates so hella mad skill of his own here.
So I applaud this book, it's a great premise with a solid display of skill, talent, creativity and imagination all around. Daring, dynamic and definitely old school throwback in nature this is the kind of story the industry has been sorely in need of.

Dinner at casual Indian restaurant, Lucknow 49 on Maddox Street near Oxford Circus. Lucknow 49 opened only a couple of weeks ago and is from Dum Biryani House founder Dhruv Mittal. The interior is pretty cosy, with colourful cushions and patterned wallpaper, that give the feel and comfort of an Indian home. Chicken and lamb dishes are halal.
Here are the only two mocktails on the menu: Dalchini (my favourite), made from assam tea, pear and cinnamon puree, and Gulkand, made from Darjeeling tea, elderflower cordial and raspberries.

The “Double Take” Art of Daina Mattis: Flocked Paintings and a Plate Table
Brooklyn-based artist Daina Mattis rewards those who look twice. Her second exhibition at High Noon Gallery in New York titled “Family Style” includes fuzzy flocked paintings, surreal hybrid sculpture… and a plate of cookies. It’s a collision of ideas, materials and objects that are a thrill to see in person while questioning ideas of “luxury” and “value” in our own homes.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is a modified drop-leaf table titled “Wounded Table”. It’s a combination of an antique table and a common disposable plate. Daina purchased the antique table – original crafted by the Maddox Table Company in Jamesville NY – from an antique festival in Syracuse, New York. The enlarged plate was CNC-machined from high-density polyethylene, a material carefully selected for its precise match in translucency to the original plate, with improved structural integrity.

A secret awaits those who know to ask the gallerist to open the drawer (Do it!). Inside, Daina has left the original handwritten price tag as she found it. More than revealing the original price of “material”, the tag holds this table to a specific personal history. It is after all, a used table with a very personal past – an idea that contrasts beautifully with the concept of a “disposable” plastic plate.

The breakout stars of the exhibition are Daina’s layered paintings – easily the most underrated works I’ve seen in New York lately. In short, these are paintings OF walls.
The “background” of each painting is not a painting of marble. It’s a painting of a “faux marble” wall treatment!!! Faux marble walls are a cheaper DIY method of painting the illusion of a more expensive material.
The fuzzy floral pattern on the final layer is hand-flocked and inspired by classic wallpaper patterns. The color of that flocking will often change throughout the painting, either standing in contrast or camouflaging into the paint layer below. Both “marble” and “wallpaper” feel like peeling back the paint layers on decades of wall decor.

To play further with depth and texture, certain areas of the paintings hold no paint at all. Brown areas in each painting are the raw canvas itself! The areas were masked (and well planned) from the start of the process.

The trompe l’oeil of the air vents at the base of each painting are “life size”. In addition to revealing that these are paintings of walls, the vents also encourage viewers to extend the composition of the artwork beyond the canvas: a nearby outlet, light switch or radiator can suddenly join the “event” of each painting.

In a larger work titled “Descent” (below) all the frames are painted to look 3D while the mats within each frame are flocked. The only thing “unpainted” are the pictures at the center of each frame. The blue faux marble on this wall appears faded by the sun, revealing its true material (not marble) and calling attention to the light that now casts a shadow of the unseen banister.

In the back of the gallery, a series of smaller works take inspiration from over-protected furniture. These flocked “Vinyl Paintings” (below) are inspired by classic upholstery fabric patterns and are encased in custom handmade clear protective covers.

And last but not least… the cookies. Daina has a tendency to feature sculpted food in her exhibitions. Her previous exhibition in 2018 displayed handmade Louis Vuitton “alphabet” pasta. These new “Legacy Cookies” are homemade sandwich cookies that swap the classic Oreo pattern for the official seals of Ivy League colleges. They too are a mash-up of culture and “class” while pointing out a clever design crossover: Oreos have an abstract floral pattern on their perimeter too.

Daina Mattis’ work is an extremely clever observation of design overlap across “class”, but it’s also a celebration of the “unfiltered real”. Standing in front of these paintings of walls, I now appreciate the beauty in a nearby restaurant’s faux-marble walls, I see the pride of ownership in clear plastic furniture covers, and I’ll stand longer to admire the plastic plates at the grocery store. Art can call attention to a never-noticed beauty in everyday things and break long-held beliefs about what is and is not “valuable”. I see the world differently and better because of this work.
