Friday, 1908 Dear Journal,
Today started early with Mama rousing me and Pa before the sun for Si's wedding. Si, true to form, seemed uninterested, bored even, as we made our way to the church yard.
Despite a soggy autumn, today turned unexpectedly pleasant. Clear skies, a welcome break from the week's thunderstorms. However, I think Ma is stressed, she kept nagging about walking with my skirt up to avoid dragging it through the mud....
The ceremony was small, Only Josephine's parents and Jackson with his fancy wife, bothered to show. I tried my best to focus on Mama's words from yesterday, And I could see why Jackson favored her.
Skinny, porcelain pale, dripping in expensive jewelry....everything I am not. However, as Josephine graced us with her entrance, any inkling of comparison vanished.
Radiance enveloped her, surpassing the boundaries of mere beauty. She embodied something ethereal. A sunlight aura surrounded her, and I found myself akin to a sunflower, unable to avert my gaze.
Even Si seemed genuinely happy, I saw him smile from ear to ear, he clasped her soft delicate hands, and caressed her cheek.
It was a sight to see, physical or emotional affection have never been his forte, not even in our childhood.
He was initially furious with Pa over the prospect of marrying Josephine. I remember his enraged shouts, echoing from the parlor.
Confidentially, Journal, I've noticed his practiced performance of donning the façade of a gentleman and a devoted son, particularly when in Mr. Coombes' presence.
Whether genuine or an act, my earnest prayer is for him to treat Josephine with the respect she deserves. I hold a genuine fondness for her, and I welcome her warmly into our family.
Lucile Harrington

Lucile's astonishment was evident as she responded, " There's no need to apologize. I was so young and bothersome- " Lucile paused, catching herself before delving into awkward self-deprecation. "And, besides, you were away on your travels for quite some time, were you not?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucile gracefully settled onto one of the benches beneath the overgrown pavilion. Josephine, on the other hand, took a moment to gaze up at the ancient ruins crowning the hill. She elegantly retrieved her fan and began a gentle fluttering in her direction.
Tumblr media
Josephine took a seat beside her, "The girls I grew up around were more or so... strict, like our families. We didn't have much in common, but the women I met during my time away were quite lovely! You remind me of them. "
Tumblr media
"Oh…" Lucile leaned back slightly in surprise, her eyes briefly tracing the knit pattern on her sweater. "I wish I could've met them. I don't really think there are other girls like me here in Henford."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Josephine cocked her head ever so slightly, "I find that hard to believe. You blend in so well! I'm sure you've encountered many lovely ladies in my absence. "
Tumblr media
Lucile's voice remained soft and slightly timid as she continued, "Well, you see, our farm is the farthest from others, and as a result, we don't receive many visitors. The rare occasions we venture into town are primarily to sell our produce, a task usually undertaken by Silas and Pa. I tend to stay here, assisting Ma with the house. "
Tumblr media
Lucile paused gently fidgeting with her delicate fingers in her lap. "I do have friends, you see," she began hesitantly, " Wilford has his hands full working on his family's farm these days, and Charlotte, well, she got married not too long ago. She doesn't visit as often as she used to since starting her own family." She sighed softly, "It's just me now, and I sometimes find it difficult to keep up. I suppose… I struggle to stand out."

The girl's boots clicked and clacked as they traversed the old log, using it as a makeshift bridge to cross the gently flowing river.
"I had no idea weddings were so complicated," Lucile sighed, her voice reflecting her bewilderment. "They don't have to be, but my family is just very particular, I suppose," Josephine replied.
Tumblr media
"I think I would never be able to memorize all the correct vows and positions and hand motions in such short notice," Lucile continued, her tone filled with trepidation. "I would surely mess up and be forced to fling myself into the river out of embarrassment. Imagine messing up in front of everyone," she added with a nervous chuckle.
Tumblr media
Josephine couldn't help but laugh softly. "Oh, don't say that! You'll make me nervous!"
Tumblr media
Lucile stumbled slightly and lowered her head in bashfulness. "S-sorry, I should've thought-," she stammered.
Tumblr media
Josephine gently placed a hand on Lucile's shoulder, "I'm simply joking, dear. Don't stress. I am not offended in the least."
Tumblr media
"In fact, I wanted to extend my heartfelt gratitude for making me feel so remarkably welcome."
"You've been an absolute joy to be around, and it was simply wonderful to discover our shared interests! It leaves me feeling rather remorseful that I didn't exert more effort to engage with you when we were younger. For that, I offer my sincerest apologies."

Josephine playfully teased, her voice laced with a mischievous tone, "Ooooh, has all this wedding preparation been occupying your thoughts, Lucile? If you're trying to impress someone, perhaps I could be of assistance. I was given lessons on these matters."
Tumblr media
Lucile's eyes lit up with curiosity. "Really? I'd greatly appreciate any advice. I'm quite clueless about all of this."
Tumblr media
Josephine gracefully rose from the bench and then gently pulled Lucile up with her. " Just keep in mind that what I'm about to say is not meant to hurt your feelings. "
Tumblr media
" I think there is nothing wrong with how you present yourself now, However...Men, you see, are quite taken with formality and obedience. "
Tumblr media
" Even though you have the most beautiful hair," Josephine said as she reached over to adjust Lucile's locks. " A young man would likely prefer your hair to be worn up, as it adds a touch of maturity."
Tumblr media
Josephine's hand glided gently across her cheek as she drew it back, smoothing her hair away from her face.
Lucile's eyes followed her soft hand motion from the corner of her eye, "I'm not sure if that'll be enough. Perhaps I'm too fat or my nose is too big," Lucile admitted.
Tumblr media
Josephine shook her head, " Nonsense!, You only lack confidence and perhaps a bit more social experience. Maybe there's another way we can express it… hmm."

The thunderstorms on Hallow's Eve brought an early chill to Henford. It wasn't bone-chilling cold, but enough to raise goosebumps and warrant longer, woolen skirts. After a day filled with wedding rehearsals, Edith and Josephine lingered behind for a chat, while Daniel returned home to attend to work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One might have expected the soon-to-be-married couple to seize this opportunity to deepen their connection. Instead, Silas remained somewhat distant and took note of Josephine's growing friendship with Lucile. Frequently they absconded the farm duties to stroll among the ancient ruins deep within the Bramblewood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silas couldn't help but roll his eyes as he observed his sister repeating the same behavior she had exhibited countless times with Jackson during their childhood—darting away to befriend visitors who were essentially there for him.

In a gentle yet swift motion, she pulled Lucile up from her bed and tenderly wiped away the tears staining her face.
"Take a breath darling, It's okay."
Helena spoke in soothing tones, "What did he do, sweetheart?"
" Did he harm you?"
Lucile found herself perplexed by her mother's question. "N-no," she stuttered, attempting to grasp the reason behind Helena's concern. However, before she could contemplate why Helena might believe Jackson would harm her, a surge of emotions overwhelmed her.
Leaning into her mother's arms, she began to cry again. "M-m-mama, it's just so unfair!", " He liked talking with me, and he danced with me! ", " We were so close! " and " I was certain he would marry me and make you proud! "
Helena was still trying to make sense of the situation. "I thought he loved me! But he was married the whole time!" Lucile's sobs would have awakened Eddy if not for the plush, tear-soaked blouse she was wearing. Confusion then struck Helena.
"What?, Lucile. Dance? When?" she inquired. The distress seemed disproportionate to a mere dance. While still nestled in her mothers chest, Lucile explained, "Before our trip… He—we—" Lucile hiccupped, attempting to compose herself. " When we visited the Love day tea party before our trip, He told me I was beautiful. "
" He held my hand, and then he stole me away, for a private dance.... It was just about us. "
Despite her daughter's heartbreak, Helena felt a surge of relief to learn that it was heartbreak over a dance Lucile hoped would blossom into a loving relationship. However, her relief was short-lived as she realized how long ago that occasion was.
Most of their attention had been focused on Silas's investments, and poor Lucile was left alone to navigate the complexities of growing up.
This time, it was just a dance But, Jackson was an older boy, He should have known better than to pursue Lucile without Eddy's permission. There was no doubt in Helena's mind that Jackson was fully aware of what he was doing…he had taken advantage of Lucile.
Helena felt a pang of guilt wash over her for neglecting to warn Lucile about the challenges of dealing with certain men as she grew into a young lady. Gently stroking Lucile's soft chocolate curls, Helena shushed her softly in reassurance, "Darling, sit with me, please. I need to tell you something."

" But luckily god had better plans for me… he led you father to me and he saved me from that life and brought me into this one. "
" He was the only man who ever genuinely cared about me. And it's thanks to him that I've been blessed with two beautiful children and a wonderful home to watch you grow up in." Helena lovingly stroked her combed locks.
"My point is you're still young, my darling…" There will be those who try to take advantage of you simply because they can," Helena gently cautioned.
" Take things slow…You will find someone when it's the right time. "
With a defiant huff Lucile stood up from the stool and faced Helena, "I'm not a child anymore, Ma!". That retort was met with a quick but measured response, "I didn't say child, I said young. " As Helena to a long look at Lucile, She couldn't escape the whirlwind of memories… "Where had all the time gone? "she thought to herself.
Confusion etched Lucile's face, "But all my friends, the girls my age, they have future engagements. I'm just the farmer's daughter. What were the etiquette classes and piano lessons for?"
Helena shook her head knowingly, " Those skills and lessons are useful in life not just marriage Darling. "
Lucile then peered out to her brothers lavish farmhouse, "I just want to make you and Pa proud. " Then with a heartfelt embrace, Helena whispered, "You already have, my dearest." ♥Mommy Daughter Moment♥ Though get married before being too old was very routine for the time period, I know Helena being a victim of sex abuse would not want her to rush into relationships so quickly.

Helena calmly closed Lucile's bedroom door and fetched the small wooden stool from her desk before She began gently brushing through her daughter's hair. "My sweet, I've traveled far and wide in life, and I believe that what you and Jackson were envisioning were not precisely aligned."
Lucile's sniffles were slowly coming to a stop, but she instantly began to tense up defensively at hearing her mother's words. She didn't understand…she didn't know Jackson as she did.
"I didn't imagine it Mama." Lucile said firmly. "He loves me… or," her defensive nature dropped along with her voice, "I thought he did."
"Someone who is right for you and loves you, Lucile, won't hide the fact that he's married," Helena stated firmly. For a brief moment, Lucile felt a fiery spark of anger. "What do you know!" she snapped at Helena. However, that angry spark instantly died once she saw the seriousness in her mother's face.
"Maybe," Lucile mumbled awkwardly, "maybe... it's a misunderstanding." Helena took a deep breath before continuing, "My darling, I know because I've been with many men who've used the same tricks that Jackson used with you." For a moment, Lucile was stunned. "W-what do you mean?" Helena continued, "Before I met your father, I was in a bad place…I made a lot of mistakes and had to do a lot of things I didn't want to do to survive. That includes… sleeping with a lot of men for money." Lucile was shocked in what she was hearing, she had no idea her mom was a prostitute. " Does…. Does daddy know? Why didn't your parents take care of you? "
" I never had a Father and your grandmother got very sick and passed away a long time ago " Helena responded.

Amidst the embrace of the Harrington estate, Josephine, now a married woman, found herself settling into the grandeur of her new surroundings. As the air grew colder she often sat in the parlor next to the cozy fire.
The house, stood adorned with opulent furnishings reminiscent of her father's home. Yet, despite the external beauty, loneliness echoed through the meticulously decorated halls.
Post-wedding, Silas heavily withdrew his presence. Rarely did he seek her out….he appeared to be deliberately avoiding her.
Silas had taken a job as the head engineer at one of her fathers factories, and was glued to his desk. She summoned the courage to breach the silence. "Silas?" she gently called from beyond the door. "I was thinking, we could take a stroll together? Before the cold settles in completely?"
Her question hung in the air, met only by the echo of silence. The ambient sounds of his pen dancing upon paper and the faint creaking of his chair formed a blatant response.
On their wedding night Silas had made no attempt to consummate the union…. While she was not necessarily displeased by the decision, she was confused why he had suddenly withdrawn.
Was it not reasonable for them to attempt to know one another?
Disheartened by yet another failed attempt at connection, She sought out Lucile.
"How is your father feeling, Luci?"
Amidst the strokes of the brush, Lucile's muffled words reached her ears. "Papa's doing well. He hasn't worsened, but Ma and I are doing what we can. The tonic she makes him works wonders. "

Helena gently pushed the door ajar, her voice a soft murmur. "Lucile, darling, your father is napping downstairs. Please keep it down—"
Her words trailed off abruptly as she registered the disheveled sight of her daughter. Lucile, lost in a cascade of tears, looked as if the weight of the world rested upon her fragile shoulders. Unkempt hair framed a tear-stained face, and she remained in her nightgown despite the late morning hour.
"Lucile, what on earth?" Helena's immediate concern colored her words. "What happened?" Lucile, amidst hiccups and sobs, attempted to compose herself. "Jackson, he—" Her words stumbled, "I thought he loved me."
At the mere mention of Jackson and the word 'love,' coupled with the distress evident in her daughter's state, Helena was momentarily frozen, her heart gripped by fear.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the rest of the household began their preparations to retire for the night, Eddy's footsteps guided him to the weathered shed. Within its dimly lit interior, Silas was once again engrossed in a myriad of projects, his hands deftly manipulating tools and materials.
Tumblr media
Eddy leaned casually against the shed's open doorway, his form casting a faint shadow amidst the workspace. With a subtle throat clearing, he turned his attention to his son.
"Silas, the hour's growin' late, boy. "
(Long Post Warning)
Tumblr media
" I've got somethin' of importance to discuss with you, Let's talk in the parlor."
Tumblr media
At the sound of his father's call, Silas shifted his focus, his interest piqued by the unusual tone in Eddy's words.
"I was just about ready to call it a night myself, I'll be right there. "
Tumblr media
After meticulously stowing his tools, Silas retraced his steps back to the comforting sanctuary of the farmhouse. The fire's gentle dance cast flickering shadows across the room, illuminating his father Eddy, who was settled into a steadfast rocking chair. Its measured creaking wove a rhythmic tapestry against the backdrop of the room's hushed atmosphere.
"Join me, boy," Eddy's voice held authority, inviting Silas to settle in.
Tumblr media
As Silas settled into the room's ambiance, a thick tension wrapped around him, impossible to ignore. The air was charged with a sense of déjà vu as if he was treading a familiar path, a well-worn trail of past conversations. His father's penetrating gaze bore into him, adding weight to the already expectant atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Silas steeled himself, knowing all too well what might lie ahead - a discourse he had grown accustomed to, a lecture on the primacy of farm duties over his own creative pursuits. Eddy's comments, like the insistent ticking of a clock, had consistently interwoven themselves with Silas' ventures, a persistent reminder that the farm's obligations must always take precedence.
Tumblr media
"You know me, Silas. I've never been one to dance around matters, so I'll speak plainly. "
Tumblr media
" I've arrived at a decision."
Tumblr media
Silas's breath caught, the impending storm of emotions threatening to surface as he clenched his jaw, determined to keep his temper in check.
Tumblr media
"Before winter sets in, you'll be wed to Josephine Coombes," Eddy's declaration landed with weight, the words reverberating in the room.
Tumblr media
A surge of disbelief and shock coursed through Silas, extinguishing the flames of brewing argument as swiftly as they ignited. "Married? To Josephine Coombes, the social pariah?" his inner thoughts were a jumble of confusion.
Tumblr media
Eddy's demeanor remained unwavering, his voice resolute as he held the reins of the conversation firmly. "Starting tomorrow, we'll join forces with a hired group of men, both Coombes and myself. Together, we'll set the land straight, preparing it for a home where you and Josephine can live happily together."
Tumblr media
Silas erupted from his seat, his demeanor giving way to a boiling rage. "Pa, you can't be serious! I hardly even know that woman. She's been off at that fancy finishing school for years, and now you're foistin' their burden onto me?"
Tumblr media
Eddy's face remained steadfast, his silence a command as unyielding as an oak tree. His stern gaze bore into Silas as he rose from his seat. "Sit yourself back down this instant and speak like a man, not a sulkin' youngster. This union's been in the cards for a while now. You and Josephine, neither of ya got your hearts elsewhere. Considerin' the circumstances, I figure it's the right path."
Tumblr media
Silas continued, "She's squandered every blessed chance her family gave her by acting a fool! She's older than me, damn it!"
Tumblr media
" This isn't a union it's a damn punishment! " he shouted
Tumblr media
Eddy's voice rumbled, his tone sharper now, his patience wearing thin. "AND BECAUSE YOU'VE DONE NOTHIN' BUT FIDDLE WITH METAL CONTRAPTIONS IS HOW YOU'VE WASTED YOURS. "
Tumblr media
" You're nearly on 19, Silas, and ain't got much to show for it. If you'd put a mite more effort into your duties, you might've managed to make something of yourself and meet someone along the way! "
Tumblr media
"But no, you've frittered away your time, avoidin' responsibility, leavin' me to make the decisions for you again!"
Silas gritted his teeth as Eddy pressed on, his tone simmering with a mix of irritation and control.
Tumblr media
"Count yourself lucky, boy. Josephine comes from wealth, she's got ties to the family. She's made her mistakes, but She'll treat you right. "
Tumblr media
Eddy's arms locked across his chest, his gaze drilling into Silas like steel daggers. "Your time's run out, boy, and I ain't got no more patience left waitin' for you to grow into a man. "
" This is MY land, I am your Father, as long as I live you will always listen to ME. You will marry Josephine and you will be happy. "
Tumblr media
Silas stood there, muscles coiled like a spring about to snap, his voice a quiet release amidst the tension. "Yes, Father."
"Good. Now, rest up, 'cause tomorrow's gonna be a long day. Lots of work waitin' for us."
Tumblr media
Eddy's eyes tracked his son as he left the parlor.
Tumblr media
In his bedroom, Silas had changed into his nightwear, yet his mind remained ablaze with the echoes of the heated confrontation downstairs. "How can he claim the right to govern my life?" Silas fumed inwardly, bitterness coursing through his thoughts. "Shouldn't tending to the farm and pursuing my own path be enough for him?"
Tumblr media
His fingers gripped the weathered edges of the desk before him with a force that threatened to splinter the wood.
"I must break free from this constricting grip. I shall not subject myself to a life dictated by him. "
Tumblr media
My abilities and intellect extend beyond this place. I need to get out, I could get a train ticket and leave for a better city that'll recognize my intellect!"
Tumblr media
As his thoughts whirled like a spinning wheel, sudden clarity pierced through the fog of uncertainty.
Tumblr media
"Daniel Coombes," Silas contemplated, a subtle smirk dancing upon his lips. "Josephine's father is a man of influence and connections...Our union could help me get what my technology needs to succeed, supporters. "
Tumblr media
The tension that had gripped his shoulders began to melt away as realization took hold, and with a renewed sense of purpose, Silas eased himself onto his bed, the weight of his father's words diminishing in the wake of the myriad opportunities now dancing before him.

Silas meandered through the house, the weight of his father-in-law's ultimatum pressing on his thoughts. He had initially hoped this marriage would remain a perfunctory arrangement, envisioning Josephine as a mere presence beside him at night and during meals.
But now he realized the truth of it all. "I should have seen this coming," he conceded internally. "Daniel chose me as a last-ditch effort to marry off his daughter since I have the potential to rise above being a simple farmer. "
Tumblr media
Josephine had become a blemish on her father's otherwise pristine reputation, an embarrassment to his affluent name. "No matter," Silas resolved. "For now, my focus must be on concocting something impressive enough to wedge my foot into the industry's door, and what better way to impression a man in high society than keeping his daughter happy."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lost in thought, he ascended to the top floor. Most of the house had been meticulously decorated, save for an empty guest room and a room that appeared to be a spacious nursery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He sneered at the sight and then continued to explore his future bedroom. The room was exquisitely adorned with a large double bed beside a fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what truly delighted him was the private office that Silas would have for himself.
Silas sighed with relief as he entered the enclosed space. It featured a handsome desk next to walls adorned with bookshelves. "Finally," he thought, a glimmer of hope lighting up his mind. Here, he would have an area where he could be alone and free from unwelcome intrusions.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, below on the porch, Edith and Helena meandered away for a leisurely stroll around the farm, leaving Lucile and Josephine to engage on their own. Lucile felt the familiar weight of her shyness creeping upon her, apprehensive about shattering the impeccable facade of poise she had been meticulously taught to uphold. She steeled herself, determined to embody the perfect lady she had always been expected to be. Unbeknownst to her, her teacup rattled nervously against the saucer she held.
"You needn't do that," Josephine's voice, syrupy sweet, broke the silence, taking Lucile by surprise. "O-oh! Whoops!" Lucile stammered, her embarrassment evident. Josephine had briefly been in Lucile's company during their childhood, but they had never had the opportunity to sit down and engage in unhurried conversation.
Tumblr media
Josephine smiled, her warmth putting Lucile at ease. "You need not fret. I adore your dress. Did you make it yourself?"
Lucile smiled back, and an unexpected sense of relaxation washed over her. "Well, yes however It's not nearly as splendid as your exquisite gown."
Josephine chuckled. "Nonsense. I greatly admire the craftsmanship you've put into your dress. In my opinion, creations fashioned by one's own hands are more impressive than any store-bought gown."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soon, the two young women were chatting as if they had been friends since childhood. To her delightful surprise, Lucile discovered that Josephine shared her passion for painting. In turn, Josephine reveled in the conversations with someone as carefree as herself.

The shed became a bustling hub of activity, with Silas setting up his own corner alongside his father's workbench. He built a sturdy wooden table to house his collection of trinkets and shared tools, organizing them into a controlled chaos. Next, he crafted a dedicated workbench, where he could neatly arrange his papers and carry out his building projects. The shed now hummed with purpose, as Silas prepared to bring his ideas to life and make his mark on the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He meticulously pieced together a large, creaky watermill on the riverbank. The steady flow of the river had always sustained the Harrington family with fish, but now it would serve an additional purpose—to harness the power of the water and bring light to their home. Silas stood back, admiring his creation, as the watermill's wooden blades began to turn with a rhythmic motion, ready to generate electricity that would illuminate their lives.
The Harrington property was then adorned with incandescent light bulbs, casting a warm and cozy glow throughout the house.
Tumblr media
As Silas worked on installing the lights, the Harringtons celebrated another joyous occasion—the birthday of their youngest, Lucile.

As the preparations for Silas and Josephine's wedding drew nearer, Eddy found himself yearning for more quality family time with his wife and children. The realization that his children were growing up and would soon leave the nest was beginning to settle in.
Tumblr media
On Hallows Eve, the Harrington family gathered in the cozy living room, bathed in the warm glow of the fireplace. Eddy invented eerie stories to tell alongside the thundering storm rumbling outside, he animatedly acted out scenes, his voice rising and falling with the suspense.
Tumblr media
Helena and Lucile were completely captivated, their applause ringing out at the conclusion of each story. However, Silas appeared somewhat detached from the familial revelry.
Tumblr media
He couldn't help but feel that he had outgrown these kinds of activities, and perhaps more significantly, he believed that his father should have as well.
