BIG joy saturday: started my day with a pain au chocolat (not as good as my one yday) and pain au raisin (amazing). And visited claude monet’s estate in giverny today. the gardens were breathtaking but the house was my favorite. so many windows!!! such much color and artwork on the walls!!! It was so overwhelmingly cheerful and calming at the same time. I also got to see the giant panoramic water lily canvases today in L’Orangerie and I almost started to cry by how moved I was. Then I went and had dinner and got french onion soup, escargot, and a strawberry pistachio cream tart!! and it was all so good. Very big day and very exhausting but I feel so full.

lilac: of all the new beginnings in their life, which one was the most important to them? How did they celebrate it?
such a good kath one ooough. my instinct was sneaking out of the house for the first time, which isn't exactly a beginning but it's close. it's the first jab at her family that isn't political, corporate, or academic- it's just personal. she doesn't want to fucking be there anymore, and she leaves down her tall, tall fire escape and doesn't return until late the next day. it cements how she really wants to spend her time, and who she wants to spend it with. like i think a rly great fic would be kath sneaking out and nocking on davey's window, actually. and she has a "so that's what they call a family" moment.
rose: what part of falling/being in love do they get the most joy out of?
i think the... assurance of it, maybe. i really don't think katherine very willingly falls in love, it's like this dangerous oh god oh fuck realization for her. so while she's freaking out abt it, and her partner is trusting and open and kind, the knowledge that this person really, truly has her back- it's a joyful kind of relaxation.

Weight talk tw I guess idk how to describe the post sorry im a little high
It’s so weird being around people who talk about weight problems (IOP) and like idk it brings up weird shit in my brain almost anxiety that I should feel bad about myself somehow like I’m doing this wrong being confident idk. Weird self doubt thing that happens when you’ve loved yourself (hmm. Rephrase. I don’t care about being fat. let’s say that.) and then you’re in a room full of people having a group discussion about how they avoid living their life in happy ways because they don’t want to become like you. But you love yourself. But everyone in your life since you were little has been dieting and talking about weight and specific numbers (someone was anxious about gaining seven pounds! SEVEN. If they saw my scale they would shit themselves. I put on seven pounds taking a big bong rip Jesus fucking Christ seven pounds. I wanted to rip my hair out.)
Next time weight issues come up in IOP I’m stepping out of the room. Like idk how to explain it cause it’s like not a trigger but I guess it is ? But it’s just so weird like the way I’m triggered makes me want to cry why does the world hate me for being fat what the fuck !!!!

I want to know more about the m9 artist au!! I remember reading a post or two about it a billion years ago (and would love to read them again) 💜

so ever since i drew that lil thing of essek painting a frank stella inspired painting (or even before), ive been thinking of what kinds of art each of the m9 would do. essek ofc is inspired by a minimalist show that i went to here, all the big names from that movement were shown, but those really dark, sinkhole-like paintings are speaking to me. another artwork of boxes made of mirrors also seems like the thing he would do too
there's a kiln here that we visited which was huge, and surrounding it were artists' studios and some other ceramic sellers, i imagine the clay family having a place like this in the middle of nowhere amongst the trees, and caleb would do his work there
anyways because at heart im a shadowgast luver its centred around them,, they meet at an artist residency or something like that and its an incredibly slow burn that involves talking and not-talking and looking and not-looking. in the end i am but a simple wong kar wai fan so. that kinda vibes would definitely influence this, i would describe it as a quiet burning i guess?? time skipy and words that are not said
i think im gonna rant a bit more about their different mediums and styles so i'll keep it under the cut
i think caleb sculpts figures and portraits, but in a sad, kathe kollwitz charcoal vibe. maybe some funky looking animals, perhaps some pots and vases to look at the pretty glazes. he's interested in using fire to burn texture into different mediums, like ive seen it being used on shellac to make a really cool net of ink looking structure.. but yknow, just seeing the aftermath of glazed ceramic from the kiln is enough, and probably better for him to keep his distance anyways
the clay family produces most of the ceramic to sell, vases, pots, plates, cups, teapots, yknow just a whole array. and its really colourful too, depicting every family members different style. i think caduceus would do some matte glazes with a lot of different colours, theyre all a little wonky but theyre better off that way anyways. he does some really mean ink calligraphy and painting though
jester definitely does,, everything, whatever her heart desires kinda thang. she makes pastel textile installations and lighthearted cute paintings, but theyre always so contemplative and soothing. she gets m9 a lot of work cus her mom has connections, etc etc. i really love the idea of jester creating works that talk about the female body and femininity (definitely not projecting no)
beau is a printmaker and photographer who's really experimental, she loves cyanotypes and printing flowers (for yasha), idk she seems like she would put fabric and rocks into the washing machine to see what would happen. u would probably catch her in someone elses studio learning about what they do or in the library learning about what old people did
veth works in a museum as a curator, getting beau to help her sometimes with gathering artworks and artists etc. she probably organises community art projects for kids and public art installations. her house is full of m9's artworks and various other artists shes worked with.
yasha does bouquets as her post-retirement part time job, prior to that no one really knows what she did ("she probably murdered a bunch of people and is now hiding from the government"). fjord draws comics for fun but is also not a job for him, molly is a question mark for me. but these guys probably wont be in it as much anyways
im still not sure what format i wanna do this in, im actually having fun just writing it in my notebook now (digital does not facilitate the creative juices) but i do want to do some visuals like fake movie stills or storyboards. maybe they will work together well???? dunno. working on the other shadowgasty thing im doing made me realise how much easier it is to draw when there's a script already there, so im writing the script for myself
im definitely not as practiced in writing as i am in drawing, but idk im just gonna have some fun and see where that takes me, meanwhile try not to feel too bad that its fanart HAHA (very bad habit)
edit: i just saw my previous thoughts on beau being an art journalist, but i kinda like this better.. but maybe she can do both muah

Oooh I haven’t thought about Sarah yet! But I will tie it in to what happens to the Jacobs parents. Be warned, it is Sad and Tragic.
Mayer tangles with a delivery truck, just like in livesies, but instead of staying at home he leaves the state to find work with family somewhere west. He never comes back. This happens when Davey is about eight. Sarah is a little older, maybe twelve, and Esther is pregnant with Les, who never gets to meet his father. Three years later, Esther falls ill and passes. I imagine Sarah being the oldest and ‘Most promising’ would be sent/taken away to live with an elderly relative, or possibly some sort of home for girls

I think Les would see him as the cool new “rich” kid who is confident enough to try anything and has all these wonderful stories about growing up in the theatre—which Davey obviously cannot stand bc he believes Les should keep his head on earth

Omg omg ong okay SO I’ve actually been thinking bout this a TON, and although their on roles are switched, they still are the characters they are if that makes sense??? So in my mind, it’s still Davey who has the words and information to start the strike—orphaned or not, this motherfucker READS. Similar to the show though he sort of sparks the idea, and Jack is kind of egging him on which Davey doesn’t understand because Jack HAS a mother, a family, he has so much more to lose
And there is this one scene that has been chewing on my brain and shaking it nonstop like a Rottweiler with a toy. Jack is still very much an artist in this AU, and Davey is the one who escaped from The Refuge.
Post rally apology scene, Jack says he’s talked to Kath and they have an idea—Davey says he just talked to her, too… and Davey isn’t kissing and telling but he doesn’t have to. Jack can tell there’s something (and there’s a lot of internal angst from Jack about this, who is trying to stay cool)
Anyway. The plan involves needing words and art for The Neesies Banner. Kath and Davey’s words, and Jack’s art. So Jack and Davey sit down together, Davey recounting everything he went through at the refuge while Jack draws it.
And then Jack can’t take it anymore and puts his pencil down and Davey’s like “???? Why’d you stop?”
Jack looks at him and just says, “I am so sorry this happened to you” and Davey is taken SO aback because he doesn’t think anyone has ever told him that and they have A Moment and uh oh??? Feelings??? And the moment breaks and they scramble away to the printing press at Pulitzers basement lol

Davey, but in a more unassuming way! He’s not so outright about it, and definitely not a big personality. He mostly talks kids out of making stupid decisions, but if they’re stubborn enough (Race) he’s not going to waste his time, because they’ll find out the hard way (Also Race). He’s not even necessarily the “leader” he’s just sort of the oldest and has been there the longest so
-has davey had run ins with Brooklyn before (and what does Jack think of Brooklyn when he becomes a newsie)
Davey has had a run in with Brooklyn through Race. I can see Race getting into a scuffle with Spot and Davey having to intervene. Not sure WHY yet? Maybe Race was selling on Brooklyn turf, maybe he was conning Brooklyn newsies, but I DO know that Davey was Very Annoyed about having to save Race’s ass

the way jack replies to “you’re seeing stars alright” feels way more in response to crutchie’s attitude- and when he talks abt his dad getting stomped on it’s not just a context reveal. it’s jack telling crutchie he’s self-aware, he understands his shit place in the world and his desire to change it. just that it’s nice to dream. ow

i get that the only reason buttons helps with a lot of the tricks is because he’s the DC but that doesn’t make it any less sweet… he’s always with splasher lmao

dated jimmy for a little while when they were in high school together, but they didnt really click so they were broken up long before graduation and didnt keep in touch after
only ran into each other again in their 30s by chance and both decided it was time to settle for comphet. they're both pretty happy they got kids out of it tho.
she is moderately more successful than jimmy and works as an editor for a regional culture magazine
she REALLY wants to be a popular travel foodie blogger type, but she very rarely leaves the east coast and shes. got basic white woman tastes. shes nice to staff and tips well at least
fav hobby is posting pics she knows jimmy will mistake for a fancy vacation. he falls for it every time
her work keeps her from being with the boys as much as she'd like but she's got equal custody of them
very supportive of jj's dancing
both she and jimmy will claim that they divorced bc the other was gay but they dont actually know that about each other. they just didnt work out.
shes the reason for the restaurant's "classier" touches but she would never claim that tacky olive garden mess now.... her brand of tacky is MUCH more high brow
and for funsies i think she'd sound nice voiced by someone like paget brewst*r or kath s0usie! i think they both have endearing mom voices, and itd be cute if her voice was a lil scratchy and squeaky like the twins :)

I have no idea what it would be about but tbh I love everything u write :)
i have talked about my 'davey as pulitzer's assistant' au a BIT on this account but i don't think i ever went in on what it actually entails, and this title is just perfect for it.
so the gist is, instead of getting a job selling papers, davey is somehow able to get a job as working closely for pulitzer. i don't really know how this would've happened for davey since there are very little possibilities for him to have ever gotten a job like this, so i think it majorly boiled down to luck - he just happened to be in the right place at the right time and landed a job for it. in songs like 'watch what happens (reprise)' we can see davey is idealistic, but he's not delusional; he has hope when he's given reason to have it, but he still understands what his place in society is and how best to preserve it. we can see it in act one - davey does not want to rock the boat. he would anchor the boat and starve in it if it meant just staying afloat. so i think davey would understand what an unfathomably lucky opportunity this is and, as a kid unused to luck, he doesn't want to lose it, since after his father getting injured, he is basically all that's keeping his family standing. his entire life revolves around keeping his job. he drops out of school so he can fund sarah and les's education instead. he's tired all the time so his father can afford to rest. their tiny tenement is still tiny, but at least they're warm most nights. davey doesn't make it home for dinner some nights, but who cares, he can sleep on the weekend! or when he's dead. whichever comes first.
fast forward to the day jack starts the strike - specifically, the point in 'the world will know' where he and crutchie march into pulitzer's office (sans davey and les for obvious reasons). instead of getting tossed out by a security guard, they're politely sidestepped by an unassuming kid who jack could probably knock over with a feather. he's polished, polite, has the perfect customer service type voice, but his smile doesn't reach his eyes. he looks through them like they're not even there and says 'welcome gentlemen, do you have an appointment?'. jack's barely said two words before he's barrelling on, 'oh, i'm sorry, mister pulitzer is in a meeting, can i take a memo?' they try again, but 'that's nice, the world takes feedback very seriously, i'll make sure to pass it along, thank you for your interest and good day :)'. jack's about to punch this wetrag out and run into that office himself when something shifts in this boy, turns him from some gaunt looking schoolboy into something sharper, harder, something carved out of steel - and he takes jack by his bandana and says 'listen, cowboy, i don't know what you're playing at, but either i get security to throw you out or we both lose our jobs. either way, you're out of here.' and. well. we all know about jack's famous competency kink. i think he'd become enamoured with how quickly davey went from being just a forgettable face in the background to a force to be reckoned with - i think he'd realize pretty quickly that davey's pretending just as much as jack is and would really want to bring that force out of him more and more, seeking him out to pester him and so on, thus leading to davey becoming more involved in the strike.
(i also envision a big 'pointing spiderman' moment when davey and kath meet each other through the newsies in this au. big 'i saw her at the devil's sacrament!' 'girl what were YOU doing at the devil's sacrament??' energy)
i think 'the man who sold the world' would be a good allegory for davey's arc in this au. davey sold his whole life, his world, to pulitzer. i imagine in this au he would barely know what's going on in his family's life anymore - who knows, maybe les still turns up at the newsstand looking to buy papers out of a clumsy, childish attempt to help his brother not have to work so much, and there can be a big moment of davey arriving at the rally, seeing les, and realising oh. his brother has a whole life and davey didn't see any of it. he doesn't have any spark about him anymore, he's too bogged down by the burnout. that's why jack gets so interested in drawing out that sharpness from him he saw in their first confrontation, and why he keeps on seeking davey out - and why davey begins to seek jack out right back, becoming more involved in the strike despite his association with the world and pulitzer as he begins to believe more and more in this idea that he and every other worker does hold power over their employer. i also imagine that'd be part of pulitzer's blackmail against jack, threatening to both fire davey and blacklist him to other businessmen, making him unable to provide for his family, as well as arrest les for being part of the newsboy union. but when davey still insists on partaking in the strike and takes part in the children's crusade (and maybe convincing other workers like hannah to do the same since i imagine he'd have a close working relationship with them), he gets to see firsthand how pulitzer's office falls apart without him and sells out the company that took over his life for a better future.

UM WEST END NEWSIES????
so I saw the Wembley Park Theatre production last night and if u don't wanna be spoiled dni
But if you have no chance of seeing it here are some of the little details <3
First of all the casting was perfect???
Michael Alomka dove into a more sensitive part of Jack - and it was super interesting
Katherine was so much more headstrong and it was suchhhh a new flavour of her - Katherine has never been one of my favourite characters but god she was so strong and wild and unduly it was brilliant.
Ryan Kopel as Davey has to be my standout tho - he seemed much younger in the role than BF did, and much more uncertain and afraid - I loved it - and his development oh my god he became boisterous and ahhhhhhhhh
Docket as Crutchie was brilliant he was much less happy-go-lucky than AKB was and oh it worked - he was frustrated and angry and real.
AND Crutchie played a much larger role in the leadership of the strike here!! Just through little interactions and stuff but it was coooollll and he even seemed to form a friendship with both Kath and Davey
Even the kid playing Les was brilliant and I usually don't like Les all that much - but the kid I saw was brilliant
KATHERINE WORE A CROWN MADE OF SPOONS IN KONY
The Newsies would swing out on lamps and ropes over the audience and oh my godddddddd
THE BROOKLYN NEWSIES WERE GIRLS (and it added balance since earlier they'd been the bowery beauties so it changed them up and showed the power of women plus finally included girls in the strike, sometbing 1992 and bway missed) AND THEY WERE SO GOOD
Jack and Katherine had Beatrice and Benedick vibes from Much Ado - that's the only comparable thing, they were so brilliant and the chemistry was so goooodddd
Ngl it probably didn't have enough Javid content for you addicts.
Butttt there was a hug when Jack tells Davey they won the strike that is so good. Davey can't retain himself, he jumps and hugs Jack and then picks up and whirls around Les
'we are inevitable' was delivered PERFECTLY I can't even explain
There are so many stunts and jumps and tricks and we all knew the dancing was gonna be perfect but dear god it still got me
And finally, my favourite thing, THE SET
I was sitting stage right in Woodside (I think) and if u can get tickets like that it is so worth it. The actors are running up behjind and beside you
There's even a little slide for the escape from snyder
And they utilise the scaffding part of the set super well
There are lamps that lifted up for ariel tricks
And so much more
Even a fuckin zip line!!!!!!!

There were a fewwww lyric changes buttt the orchestrations were changed quite a lot to make room for more dance and honestly? I think I prefer broadway music wise

The Pulitzer's set was built in newspapers to show class and how the Newsies have built their entire empire etc
And all the set was moved on and off by the Newsies, too, again to show class and how the Newsies (and working kids) run the world, really

is katherine in the sorority that jack’s frat is associated with or nah. i can see them meeting that way and maybe both realizing that greek life just isnt the right thing for them, and that encourages jack to give davey and his pal’s a shot
katherine is not in a sorority! she’s actually one of davey’s friends- jack meets her when he gets closer with davey!
i’m not expecting her to be a huge part of this au until the end- it is very heavily jack and davey centric- but she’s one of davey’s best friends and certainly someone he talks about a lot.
and now that i’m thinking about it. maybe she WAS in a sorority. ok im having thoughts now. the fic is taking place in their sophomore year of college so perhaps kath was in a sorority during freshman year. she was always expected to be in one- her parents were both in greek life, that’s how they met, and they’re alums of the university- and she tried it out. she really gave it a shot. but it wasn’t for her. it SHOULD be for her- her parents are successful and wealthy and they pay for her entire education. sorority fees included, but she feels so disconnected from greek life because there ARE so many expectations for her to be the perfect representation of her sorority.
i imagine she disaffiliates after freshman year and moves out of the sorority house. maybe that causes such a rift that her parents pull back from funding her education, and she meets davey (and eventually sarah) because they both work at the library on campus (among separate second jobs) so they can pay their way through college. and when jack and kath eventually meet, they get on like a house on fire because they both understand how it feels to be so deep into an oppressive and flawed environment.
