The room was dark. She had no idea what time it was and it even took her a few minutes to realize where she was. The come down from a high as she got older and more addicted were even more brutal than the last. Over the past couple of years her existence had become meager. Prostituting herself just to get enough money to cover the cost of where she was staying and her hit. She had not been able to hold down a job, no matter how menial for at least five years. She was still orientating herself when she had to do a double take. It was her phone ringing, a number she did not recognize. In her foggy state she grabbed her phone, hoping to reject the call but ended up answering.
“Shit” she mutters under her breath before answering.
“Hello” she says groggily.
“Hi mum…”
Louise sat upright, all of a sudden very awake.
“Ethan, I…uhhh… I did not expect to hear from you.”
“Did I wake you?” Enquired Ethan. “It is late.”
Louise was still in shock.
“I would like to meet up with you, when would be best?”
Ummm… a good time, are you available tomorrow?”
Ethan is on his computer, looking up places to eat in Southy.
“There is a diner near where Alan said you are staying. I can meet you there around 7.30am”
Louise knew the diner that Ethan was referring too. She agreed to meet him and said she would see him then.
Louise was now shocked and nervous. She had thought about the hurt she had caused Ethan quite a lot lately. She knew her addictions that she had been ruled by since she left him and Alan had ruined her. She knew that her body had just about had enough and she was wanting to end it before she had even less dignity than what she had now.
It had been nearly two months now when she saw the article about the W.H.O and the work that was being done in Brazil and she saw the photo of Ethan. It had been nearly 26 years but she knew it was him even before reading the caption. She knew then that she wanted to see him to apologize for the hurt she would have caused him. She reached out to Alan who stated that he would pass her details on but did state that the decision was to be Ethan’s. She understood and if she was being honest, she was surprised he reached out but at the same time a small amount of relief ran through her.
The next morning came. Ethan made his way to Southy. He had no idea what he was going to find. Would he recognise her after all this time? What had become of her and the most burning question, why now? He found the diner, sat down, and waited. A waitress came and took his order. Meanwhile Louise was anxious. She was at the end of the come down. She got up, brushed her hair and got dressed. She made her way to the diner. She looked at her phone. She was relieved she was on time. Her anxiety got higher as she approached. She entered the diner and spotted him straight away. She slowly made her way to the table. As Louise approached, Ethan looked up. He blinked, to make sure he was looking at who he thought he was.
“Ethan” she says, with tears in her eyes.
Ethan gestures at her to sit down. He did not want to call her mum, to him, he lost his mother the day she walked out but calling her Louise, well that just seemed callous. She sits down.
“Thank you for reaching out, and also for meeting me” she says quietly.
Ethan nods. He does not see the woman he remembers but yet he knows it is still her. He is a tumult of emotion with many questions swirling in his mind. They sit in awkward silence. Louise breaks it.
“I saw you became a doctor…”
Ethan was stunned briefly. Louise continued.
“I saw an article about the pandemic in the Amazon and there was a picture of you. I knew you would go on to do good with your life.”
“Why now? Myself and dad have not heard from you in nearly 26 years.” Ethan took a breath. “Do you even have an idea of how much pain you caused when you walked out that day?”
Ethan clenched and unclenched his fists. He knew he was not dealing with interns but his blood was boiling as all the memories had started to come flooding back.
Louise winced before answering.
“Not the full extent obviously. For a while now I have been wanting to reach out.”
Ethan had been observing her the whole time. She was understandably nervous but there was something he could not put his finger on.
As much as he was afraid to ask, he knew he had to.
“Why did you leave me? Us?”
Louise took a shuddering breath. She knew she was going to come off as selfish.
“I was young when I met your dad. We fell for each other hard and fast. Next thing I know I am pregnant. I lost that baby but Alan loved me and I him so we got engaged and married. I never fully worked through that grief but we were overjoyed that we were pregnant with you. You came and we were happy. We both worked hard, not wanting you to go without. After a while though resentment about my life set in. I resented settling down so young, I resented my job, I still loved you both but I resented you. I did not know how to have that conversation with either of you. I felt broken so I decided to leave.”
She takes a sip of her coffee, allowing Ethan to ask any questions but they are not forthcoming.
“The hope had been to do things that I did not do but I had no clue. I never felt so lost. I had another job for awhile but I felt like a shell. I started drinking, then started therapy but instead got addicted to those drugs. About 10 years ago I hit rock bottom. The drugs and drinking had little effect. I could not hold down much in the way of work.”
“So you have come seeking…financial assistance?” Asked Ethan, cautiously.
“Oh, no. I do not want you to subsidize my habits. No, I wanted to see you, apologize for the hurt I no doubt put you through?”
Ethan was dumbfounded and then he was angry.
“You wanted to apologize. Fine but why now? Why not 10,15 hell even when the police found you nearly 26 fucking years ago? Huh? Why not then?”
Ethan took a breath, not wanting to cause too much of a scene.
“The carefree mischievous young boy you left died that day. I am glad you got your chance to tell me why at least. Good day Louise.”
He stood up, paid for their meals and left.
Ethan did not know what to think. He did not fully understand why she resented her life so much that she had to leave but not knowing how to feel was frustrating. He went to work. Meanwhile Louise sat there shocked. She was expecting an angry barrage that never came. She still had not apologized for what she did but at least he knew why now. She finished her meal and left to lead her existence.
Casey could tell something was bothering Ethan from the beginning of the team meeting. She made sure she worked extra hard as to not get on his bad side. She knew he had no tolerance for “rookie” errors at the best of times but when he looked like the mood he looked to be in, even passable was not tolerated. June also noted Ethan’s mood as well. She did not think it had anything to do with Casey but even Casey was wary of him. What is going on she thought to herself.
Later that night, Ethan went home. He went to grab a glass of Scotch but thought the better of it. He reflected on what Louise said. How she became addicted not only to alcohol but medication and he presumed illicit substances. Then he thought on his work habits and how he kept pushing people away, shied away from hard discussions then he realised, he was like his mother.
Bad day or just to unwind. Have a drink. When he put his all into caring for Naveen only to run out of ideas and what he thought time. He quit, drank and put in his Expression of Interest for Brazil, which was essentially running away from his grief. Couldn’t see a future for him and Estelle, slowly shut her out so much that she ran to his “best friend”. His reaction when he found out about Casey. Avoid a discussion and shut her out, even though he knew the only way she could tell him about the baby is via text or leaving a voicemail.
These revelations were disconcerting and that was putting it mildly. He was like Louise in so many ways. He groaned in frustration and did what he did best, had a drink while stewing in his emotions.
He must’ve fallen asleep and had awoken from a nightmare. It took him a few minutes to realize where he was and that he was not in some slum, all alone living from hit to hit. In that moment he knew he had something that Louise did not have. A desire to not end up alone, and a shell of who he is. He knew it would be a lot of work but he knew he needed to do it. He went to bed, optimistic of the journey he was to embark on.
———-
Authors note 2: I wanted to give this its own chapter as it is a bit of a turning point for Ethan. It is a journey that he embarks on- a lot of issues obviously but he knows it is one he needs to do. Thank you for reading this far.

I'm new to the fandom and have been enjoying your work. I wanted to know what is your hc for Ethan and his mother? Did he forgive her or cut her off for good? If you have any fics on it, can you let me know? Thank you. 🙂
Omg, hi! It’s so wonderful to see a new member joining our little OH circus! Welcome to the fandom, dear, hope you’ll like it here ❤️ I’m beyond honored that you’re enjoying my fictional corner, especially since I’m not too active anymore. Thank you for giving my writing a chance and sending this amazing ask 🥰
I don’t think that I have ever discussed Louise and her role in my canonverse before 👀 So I don’t have any fics to share, sorry! It could be due to the fact that the HC changed a few times along the way 😅
Before I settled on the canon endgame for E&T, I had a couple of different ideas that were messier (just like life itself) and less conventional. But I decided to go for the scenario that comforted me the most: our past and the mistakes of our parents don’t define us and even the most damaged individuals are capable of breaking the pattern. I picked this direction because I wanted to give Ethan and Tiffany the kind of love and warmth they didn’t have growing up. I’m embracing hope through Ted Lasso’s idea of rom-communism ksbskbsk However, it’s important to acknowledge that healing takes different forms and there are many ways to approach it!
Now, let me elaborate on my take on Ethan and Louise…Or do not let me, I can never shut up lol
Ethan was very conflicted. On the one hand, he despised her and what she did to him and Alan, he didn’t see the point of their reconciliation. He didn’t want to reopen old wounds and was afraid that his father might get hurt again. That he might get hurt again, inevitably dragging Tiffany down and breaking her heart. On the other, though Louise was a complete stranger to him, she was still his mother, someone he used to care about more than anything in the world, and deep inside his long-drawn-out rage and pain there was some basic human compassion. Eventually, he realized that her decision to leave was actually the best gift she could offer given her issues, the necessary evil so to speak.
As a doctor, he obviously recognizes addiction as a chronic condition that needs to be managed and resolved through a highly personalized medical treatment. He was willing to ensure her medical assistance, but would it be possible with zero involvement? Was he ready to open the door and accept her apology?
Ethan relied on Tiffany’s generous support and advice. Her insight was particularly important to him—her mother-daughter relationship has always been a sort of psychological Cold War, so she could certainly relate to the complexity of the situation. She encouraged him to embrace the emotions swirling inside and focus on what’s best for him. Even if Louise didn’t deserve forgiveness, it was essential to his own healing: he could finally truly move on and allow himself to be free of the burden he carried for years. She reminded him that he deserves a peace of mind and no one will find it for him—he’s not a helpless child anymore and he’s in charge of his own life. With Tiffany’s limitless patience and love guiding him through the mess in his head, Ethan gathered his strength and faced the emotional challenge.
After serious consideration, Ethan chose to forgive his mother. Even though he had every reason to cut her off for good, every right to be selfish and unforgiving, he picked the more difficult road of sympathy, proving that he’s actually nothing like Louise—they may share a few personality traits, but he’s so much more than a bitter conclusion to a broken past.
But of course, just like he said in the playthrough, it didn’t mean that things were suddenly okay between them—quite the contrary. I don’t think that they would ever come close to forming any kind of deeper bond. Still, they keep in touch and check on each other every few weeks. As long as Louise sticks to her recovery journey, Ethan makes an effort and allows her to be a part of his life to a small extent he’s comfortable with. Not for long though: I imagine that she’s going to die rather young, soon after E&T’s middle child Letty is born.

Did Ethan go to Louise's funeral?
Yes, he did.
My hc for Louise is that she struggled with addiction for the rest of her life. She was in and out of rehab, and eventually it took a toll on her health with her kidneys and liver failing. Because of her drug history, she was not a candidate for transplant. This happens a few years after the events of Seeing Red.
Ethan had given her several chances before, but she could never hold out on the drugs for long. She started using again a few months before Ethan proposed to Cassie (in early 2022) and he swore he wouldn't get involved again. But of course, his heart couldn't detach itself from the fact that she was his mom. He got Louise into rehab and tried to help again.
But then it happened again two years later and he was truly done. He told Alan and Cassie to never bring up Louise in front of him again. As far as he was concerned, his mother was gone and he was not going to initiate contact. Alan kept Cassie up to date, and except for the incident in Seeing Red, she respected Ethan's wishes and supported him completely.
When Louise was in her last days, Ethan visited her in the hospice to say his goodbyes and make his peace. He helped Alan organize the funeral, but he chose not to give a eulogy. No one expected him to either.
With that, he finally closed that chapter of his life. As a result, he had no regrets or a feeling of something left unfinished.

I was just watching Forrest Gump... why does Jenny remind me of Louise Ramsey? Maybe that's the kind of life I imagine for her after she left?

What would be Ethan’s reaction to Emma telling him she would like to meet and possibly have a relationship with Louise? (let’s say at +16yo and he knows Louise does want that too.)
Hey Nonny,
Thanks for the ask!
Honestly, it's hard for me to figure this situation out. Why? I have not even finalized what I want to do with Louise in my HC for Ethan & Kaycee. See, I don't want to villainize her the way she often is. I think she did a terrible thing, but I know people who do terrible things are usually victims themselves. Part of me would love to have her and Ethan heal - it would never be perfect - but enough that there would be a relationship. If that occurred (and that's where I'm leaning), there would be no reason for Emma to have this conversation. Louise would already have been a part of her life.
But let's say it went bad, and Ethan had to cut Louise off. In that case, Emma is such a Daddy's girl, I couldn't see her wanting to see Louise unless it was to tell her off, and I think both of her parents would convince her that it was for the best just to let things be.
So, in my world, this wouldn't happen. But... for argument's sake... let's say it did. I think Ethan, along with Kaycee, would explain why they haven't had a relationship with Louise. They'd explain why the still choose not to, nor do they want Emma around her. Then they'd tell her when she's 18, she can make that choice for herself. But as her parents, they do have a say over this until that time, and the answer is no.
Thanks so much for the ask!

Too Late
Alan Ramsey; Ethan Ramsey; Louise Ramsey
September 1995
Alan Ramsey pulled into his drive way. He was surprised that Louise’s car wasn’t there already. He let himself into the house and found his 12-year old son at the kitchen table with his school books around him.
Ethan looked up at him and smiled. “Hi, Dad.”
Alan returned his smile. “Did you have a good day at school?”
Ethan frowned, closing a book. “I think I have all my math homework done through Thanksgiving, at least.” He turned his head and looked at the clock above the stove. “Mom said she needed to run to the grocery store. She left a couple hours ago. I thought she’d be back by now.”
December 1995
Louise sat in her nearly empty studio apartment. She didn’t know what to do anymore. She regretted her choices that had got her to this point in her life. She heated her frozen meal in the microwave and sat at her small second-hand table in the kitchen corner. She pulled out the sole Christmas card she had purchased. With a shaking hand she wrote, Dearest Alan and Ethan,

Did your Ethan forgive Louise? (book 2) If not, did she ever come back to his life? (once he is with Tatum)
Hey, Anon! (I am so, so sorry I'm late responding)
Thank you so much for this Ask! 💜
Ethan did not forgive his mother in Book 2, but she will come back into his life (a very small snippet of this is in a fic to come). Tatum has always been supportive of however Ethan wants to handle his own family. She completely understands parental abandonment, and the emotions that come with it, so she would never pressure him one way or another.
However, Ethan grows exponentially as a person through various life experiences (ie his ability to forgive and love Tatum; meeting Tatum's father; becoming a father himself, etc) that makes him more tender-hearted towards his mother.
Thanks again!

Remember around ch 13 of OH2 when people suspected Farley and possibly Louise of working with Travis when he wanted to poison the senator? I didn’t like that at first because it seemed to outlandish for the kind of story open heart wanted to be at the time...but I would have preferred it to the complete lack of consequences that we actually got after the attack 😅
I too, in hindsight, wish it was true. Imagine the drama, having to move, potentially with MC's LI, and dealing with the pains of balancing a new relationship, PTSD and residency. And then all of Ethans shit, romancing or not. Would have been fun 👀

Hi, if I recall correctly you had Ethan forgive Louise. If yes, how's their relationship now and in the future? Is she close to the twins?
Hi Nonny! Sorry for the late response!
Yes I did have Ethan forgive Louise. At first it was tough but Ethan wanted his mother in his life and knew it would be a long process before they could be on really good terms.
At the moment, his relationship with his mother is good. They see each other every other weekend, Ethan goes to the rehab centre where Louise is still being treated. In the future, Louise moves back to Rhode Island and finds herself a flat and a job in the area. She and Alan remain on good terms but do not rekindle their relationship.
Also in the future, when the twins are here, Alan and Louise do things as a couple with them. They want the twins to spend time with the both of them and so often take them on days out when they visit. Louise's relationship with Ethan is good at this point and it's the same with Victoria.

Since there hasn't been many OH asks going around, I thought I'd start!
How do you think Louise will react to her son dating/seeing your MC, had she been more involved in Ethan's life? We know Alan was extremely supportive. Little is know about his mother's role.
If Louise wasn't an addict and she didn't walk out of her family, what would she'd said to her son and what opinions would she have of your MC?
Oh I love this question!
I think Louise being in Ethan's life would change a lot of things, for example Ethan would probably be quicker to let people in, he'd be less cynical so that would play a lot into his relationship with MC.
Not going down that complicated route of hypotheticals, I headcanon Louise's personality being a lot like Ethan's (there's some canonical evidence to this, but it's mostly an HC) so I think, she would at the beginning take some time to soften up to Diana, after all this is her son we are talking about, but since it's Diana, she will eventually warm up to her after seeing how much E and D care about each other and how happy she makes him, Diana's friendly personality also makes it very easy to love her, so yeah.
Also, since they are quite similar (E and Louise) I think she might also be a pushing factor in his not denying his feelings anymore, cause who better to give advice than a person who is just like you?

Very interesting question, anon. Thank you so much for doing your part and keeping this fandom alive. ❤
I think it depends upon how your MC is with Louise. In canon, Marissa tried and kept conversations with Louise civil; as a result, Louise wasn't hostile towards Marissa.
If Louise hadn't left her family and had seen Ethan and Marissa dating, I think she would have been supportive of it. My reasoning behind it is that before she left, she did show general concern and love as a mother for Ethan; that is why her leaving her family out of nowhere effected and bothered Ethan so much. I think she was a good mother before leaving, of course. If she continued to stay, she probably would have been the same and it wouldn't bother her whoever her son dates if the person Ethan is dating is genuinely a good person and manages to leave a good impression on Louise.

When life has other plans (8/16)
Tolerate it
Book: Open Heart (AU)
Characters: Ethan Ramsey, F!MC Casey Valentine
Warnings: language
Category: Angst
Word count: 1982
Summary: A new normal is found hastily. The changes pique the curiosity of a colleague. A blast from Ethan’s past leaves him torn as to what to do
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Pixelberry.
Authors note: It is not the end of the drama ok. It is me I will give you a truck load of angst and then give you a happy ending. This series has a happy ending ok. I need to look at my plan again as I changed a little bit the finding out and fallout.
💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
Casey made it home. She arrived at the same time as Aurora.
“What is up Casey?” She asks tentatively.
Casey tells Aurora everything, from the collapse due to the pain, to Ethan coming across her and him finding about the pregnancy and abortion and the heated discussion they had. Aurora listened and refrained from saying that you should have told him. She knew that was the last thing she needed to hear right now. Casey had a light breakfast and went to her room. She was still tired from the day before. After a shower she went to hop into bed.
There was a message from Ethan wanting to know if she arrived home safely. She left it on read and went to sleep.
Meanwhile, at Edenbrook Ethan was off. The lack of sleep and his discussion with Casey was catching up with Ethan. As such his temper was shorter than usual. Naveen had his regular head of department meeting with Ethan today and straight away he knew something was up.
“What is wrong and don’t you dare say nothing.”
Ethan sighed in resignation.
“I had no sleep last night, just a bit too tired but Casey was not well…”
“Casey? Not well? Is she ok?”
“She was pregnant, and decided to terminate the pregnancy and not tell me.”
Naveen was silent for a few minutes.
“I am sure she had her reasons…”
“Yes she did Naveen, I was in Brazil when she found out and she did not want to leave a voicemail or text so she decided not to tell me. I do not think she was anticipating this medication not working.”
“If she had told you would the outcome had been the same?”
“I do not know. We had decided that our arrangement would end before I went to Brazil, we had both agreed at the time we would go to a pre-Miami footing but I realized after a few weeks down there that I did not want that and was thinking of possible work arounds if Casey wanted a relationship too.”
“Having a child is a big commitment as well…”
“I know Naveen, she called herself an obligation.”
“Is this going to affect the team moving forward?” Asks Naveen.
“You know I can compartmentalize with the best of them by. So I do not see any major issues going forward, however I will let you know if there is.”
Naveen nodded. They discussed the team, the patient from yesterday and work in general. Ethan felt lighter for having told someone. He also knew Naveen would not plaster it all over the hospital. Meanwhile, after Ethan left, Naveen felt saddened. He had seen Ethan put his career ahead of personal relationships many times. He knew that there was a valid concern with reporting lines and the rabid gossip but he had hoped Casey would be different. Also he was saddened about Casey’s ordeal also. He sent some flowers to her house.
The day after came. Casey still had some abdominal pain but it was to be expected. She went to work. She saw Naveen on her way in and she thanked him for the flowers. Casey presumed that Ethan had told him but said nothing. Naveen stated that if there was anything she needed to let him know. Casey was appreciative. She made her way to the team office. Ethan was there alone.
“Good morning Dr Ramsey.” She said as she entered. Ethan was surprised to see her.
“How are you feeling…” he falters when he sees the look on her face.
“I am fine, Ethan.” She says curtly. He winces at the tone.
“Well, we have what you wished for. I thought you would be happy.”
“What so I can not enquire about your welfare?”
“Sorry Dr Ramsey, everything is still a little too raw right now.”
“I do not consider you a burden, Dr Valentine. Nor would I do anything out of ‘obligation’”
Casey nods. “As I said, everything is a little raw, it will take me time to process.”
Ethan nods, hoping that once all the dust settles, a friendship and a less terse normality will be found.
Time went on and Casey and Ethan both begrudgingly settled into their perceived want of a pre Miami footing. Deep down they both hated it but they neither party was willing to admit to the other that they hated it. The change from Casey’s first day to what was now normal between the two of them did not go unnoticed by Dr June Hirata. June was not a fan of the competition when it was announced and Aurora Emery being on top of the competition was no surprise and confirmed her initial suspicion that it was a way for Dr Harper Emery to give her niece a leg up but as the competition went on there was a new top
Intern. Ethan had already been acting suspicious and appearing more tired but not long before Casey was on top he appeared more rested, despite appearing to be at the hospital more than he needed to be. Then the rumours started. She was not sure what to think about them. She did not think Ethan to be the type to sleep with someone to give favour but she could not rule out it. She was also suspicious of the sabbatical, sure if he did apply when he quit surely he could have gotten out of it but then she met her, did as she was told and confirmed the diagnosis on the first day but now there was tension. It struck her odd. How was this change going to affect the team? She had to admit though that Casey did have plenty of knowledge and did work well within the team despite whatever was happening between Ethan and Casey.
June was eager for information and her chance came when they had a perplexing case. The case of Lamar Stevenson. It was an interesting and a complex case. He was losing motor skill and could not identify multiple points of contact but we could not figure out what was happening. A home visit was suggested. Lamar’s wife, Lorraine consented to the visit but the team were deciding who would go. Baz had too many patients and June suggested that Casey accompany Ethan. They go to the Stevenson’s house. The ride to Quincy Bay started off with a very awkward silence which both of them hated. Eventually Casey broke the silence asking about what normally happens with a home visit. Ethan stated that they focus on key areas, to ascertain further what they have been told but to also to look for anything that stands out that could help solve the case. They arrive at the house and go through the main areas. Casey is in the main bedroom, standing on a chair to try and reach some photo albums. Ethan stood close. As Casey reached an album and overbalanced. Ethan caught her. They looked in each others eyes for awhile, Casey swore she saw a hint of desire among all the emotions. Ethan wanted to kiss her so much.
“This is not a competition to see how long you can hold me” said Casey, breaking the spell.
“Of course” said Ethan. They look at the album and Casey notes the lack of Lamar’s photos. Ethan does not find it completely odd but gets where Casey is going. They collect the samples and lock up and head back to the hospital.
Casey heads off and does her rounds. After awhile she makes her way back to the DT office to see if there are any dates. She comes across a familiar looking older gentleman who looks lost.
“Can I help you?”
“Yeah, I am looking for Ethan Ramsey, I have not seen him here since he moved office and I am lost.”
“I am headed to that office, are you a patient of his?”
“I am sometimes but not today, I am his dad.” He offers his hand. “Alan Ramsey.”
Casey shakes it, “Dr Valentine but you can call me Casey.”
A glimmer of recognition lights up Alan. “Ahh, the rookie.” Says Alan with a slight chuckle. “It is not very often that he refers to an intern well I suppose resident now by any name. It is nice to put a face to it.”
Casey did not know what to think about this. They arrived at the office and it is empty. Alan looks dejected but Casey tracks down Danny and he says that Dr Ramsey has left the building. Alan looks even more dejected and wished he had called ahead. Casey could see he looked upset. “I have an idea where he could be and Casey and Alan made their way to Derry Roasters. They spoke about working with Ethan and how he sees the world. Alan could see why his son was so taken by Casey. She was intelligent, appeared driven and he had to admit attractive. They arrived at the coffee shop and they saw Ethan. They made their way over and Ethan was surprised to see them both.
“What brings you up dad?” Asked Ethan.
“I had a phone call, it was your mother…”
“Ethan tensed. Casey tries to leave and Alan stops her, insisting that he buy her a coffee. Casey sits down while Alan gets a coffee.
“Are you ok?”
Ethan remains silent. Alan returns and Casey accepts the coffee and Alan insists that she stay.
“What does she want?” Ethan asks tersely.
“To speak to you Ethan. I do not know why but she did want the decision to be yours.” He says while he hands him a piece of paper. Ethan says nothing and Alan takes his leave. Ethan and Casey then walk back to the hospital. She can see Ethan is troubled but does not pry. Ethan is appreciative of the silence. His mother all of a sudden requesting contact after nearly 26 years was confronting to say the least. With how things were with Casey currently, he did not wish to burden her.
They arrive back at the hospital to see their patient hanging off the railings of the atrium. Casey rushes up and pretends to be one of the people that Lamar is talking too. She hops over the edge to try and lure him back. Ethan is frightened, not for the patient but Casey. As much as things are strained right he does not want to see her hurt. The whole commotion, including Ethan’s reaction was spotted by June. Perhaps there are feelings underneath Ethan’s exterior, she thinks. Lamar comes back from the railing and is taken back to the room. Casey is brought back over and she heads off to do some research. Ethan is relieved she is ok and June decides to monitor the situation. She did concede that Casey did fit well in the team, despite whatever was going on with Ethan.
The atrium episode leads to a diagnosis for Lamar. Syphilis and it is in its tertiary phase. The damage it has done is permanent but it can be managed. Lorraine is thankful but saddened.
Later that night Ethan is at home, sipping on a scotch. He thinks about the whole case, how Lamar’s past has some serious implications for his future, how he had let his issues from Louise abandoning him affect him. The trust issues he had because of her abandoning him and Alan already destroyed a friendship and possibly another, his feeling of being unloved had also impacted many a long term relationship. He looked at the piece of paper on the coffee table. He knew opening Pandora’s box was risky and making this call would be but he needed to before again his future was ruined by his past. He finishes the glass of scotch, pours another and then dials.
———-
Authors note: laughs maniacally. I am not sorry for ending it there but what happens next will be the focus of the next chapter and if I added it to this then well it would be very long.
In all honesty though in a way I am glad that Pixelberry did not give Ethan the option to speak to Louise when she first contacts him because we all know how non existent her plot point became at the end of book 2 but at the same time I wish we could have. And that is what writing an au is for.
For those who have read this far thank you.

A Louise ask since we are in the year of the 30th anniversary of her walking out
This is is for both E/K and Tobias/Casey worlds as I am genuinely curious if there is any difference.
1. Does Ethan ignore the day or remember what happens?
2. Canonically he has a lot of anger in him, and sadness, when Louise comes back, and I presumed hear her apology for what she did, does that help heal some of the anger.
3. Does Ethan embark on any other healing?
And a DTI bonus question
Which anniversary hurts more, the one when she originally walked out or the second time?
Hey Tash, thank you for the ask! I love this because I have not worked on much of an HC for Louise, and I need to.
This is so ironic because I just had this conversation with someone. In my family, everyone remembers awful days... days people died, days we got bad news and significant bad days. I don't. In fact, I dislike when I see their posts about it on social media. I really believe in remembering the good and not focusing on the bad. I can really see Ethan following the frame of thought, particularly about not focusing on the bad. I'm sure he doesn't even think of it on the date, and if you asked him, he'd tell you the month but not even remember the day.
2. Yes, absolutely. Ethan never got closure, and regardless of his decision about his mother and their future, seeing her again, and hearing her apology would help give that to him. Ethan, like most children, saw his mother in an idealized light, even though she was far from perfect. Seeing her now, and realizing how broken she is, helps him understand, REALLY understand, that it wasn't his fault, it wasn't Alan's fault, and, to a degree, it wasn't even Louise's fault.
3. For the first two questions, I would say it was the same in both E/K and T/C worlds. Here, I think there is a difference. In E/K world, he'd begin therapy and truly heal. Partially because Kaycee really pushes for it and partially because he realizes to have a truly healthy relationship with her, which he wants very much, he needs to heel. In the T/C world, Casey is his friend. She cares about him, and she encourages him. When he and Tobias mend fences, Tobias mentions it too, but Ethan's adamant he's fine. He's not totally wrong, he definitely needs more help, but he is doing better. In this world I think Ethan would go to counseling in time, on his own volition, but probably wouldn't stick with it too long.
DTI Ask:
I'll defer to my first question. I don't think he gives either of those anniversaries any thought. First off, I really don't think men are wired to focus on anniversaries. They tend to be less important to them. And I think his thoughts are, why do I even want to remember the date?
In DTI, when he had a conversation with Louise and told her goodbye, he had made his peace. His chapter with Louise was closed, and he got everything he needed to move forward. He isn't going to spend a lot of time thinking of her, he's going to focus on what he has.
Thanks for the ask, Tash!
