Recommendation: Apps for Japanese Learning

Over the years, I've downloaded and tested many apps. Though my favorite app was discontinued (I miss you, mindsnacks Japanese), there are still others that I don't think I'll be removing from my phone any time soon. In light of duolingo's horrible update causing a large migration and search for other apps, I thought I'd share some of my favorites. Also, some of these apps have websites or discords for you to interact with other users or to ask support questions.

For those who cannot use/don't like the graphics, the written out version is below the break.

Lingo Legend

RPG-based language learning game that I was a beta tester for. It also offers Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Uses spaced repetition.

Offers beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels.

User can jump between lessons and difficulty levels.

Available on ios and android

Manabi Reader

Caters to all JLPT levels and offers reading options on an array of topics (including news, games, reddit). Can hilight words and look up in-app. User can also paste a link within the app to read.

Companion app available (Manabi Flashcards).

Available on ios

TODAI: EASY Japanese News

Aggregates news from various sources.

Offers practice JLPT exams in-app.

Offers grammar resources and in-app dictionary that can generate flashcards from words saved in notes.

Offers audio listening, as well as videos with transcriptions.

Available on ios and android. Also has a website.

Shirabe Jisho

Offline dictionary app.

User can favorite words, make lists, take notes, make flashcards, etc.

User can search for words in kana, romaji, drawing, or through radical (or radical building).

Available on ios

Renshuu

Think quizlet, but solely for Japanese. You can create your own lists, use others, play shiritori, earn prizes and interact on forums.

You can study grammar, kanji, vocab, flashcards, learn and submit mnemonics. You can also friend people.

Available on ios and android. Also has a website (of which I am an avid user).

How to gain access to the Seitokai Discord server

Hi, friends! It's @onigiriforears (aka shay) here! I'm going to teach you how to gain access to our entire server. Step by step.

Step 1: The first message and channel that you'll see when you enter the server is in the #welcome channel. It'll look something like this:

Step 2: Please follow the directions and head over to the #rules channel. This channel is going to make sure that you understand the rules and guidelines of the server. It's imperative that you read it because even though this is a server focused on learning and free resource sharing, we're a community server that's trying to make sure that we don't violate Discord's guidelines. READ THEM IN ENTIRETY. If you're confused, feel free to message me on Discord (I'm the "shay" that's mentioned/pinged in your welcome message. I know you're in the server--I allow the server's notifications to push through my DND settings.) You could also message me or send me an ask @onigiriforears, but discord will get you a faster response.

Step 3: From there, please go to the #verify-yourself channel. In this channel, you'll be confirming that you didn't lie about actually reading the #rules. We (me, mods, and admin) can tell if you're lying based off of what #roles you have (or don't have). Why do we have it set up this way? We're trying to discourage trolls and bots from entering the server. Because, unfortunately, we have been raided and trolled more than once. Some specific moments would be when someone broke through our (at the time) low-key "pick a role" option and stole our roster list. They used it to find mutual servers that they shared with members and then harassed them in the mutual servers after being banned in ours. (That included stealing ppl's stuff in the dank meme bot and whatnot.) A second time would be when someone broke through our mandatory #roles and spammed channels and told everyone that people who can't get to N1 in a year are dumb <not a good look. He was promptly banned lmao.

Step 4: Head over to the #roles channel. IT'S SO IMPORTANT. This is where you'll have to choose the one role that's mandatory--every other role within that channel is optional besides the JLPT level roles. Why? Since we're a community server focused on resource sharing and engagement, we also make sure we pay attention to our server demographics. If we have a slew of N5 or beginning members, we make sure that we have a lot of N5-targeted events and resources available. For a while, we had no N2 and N1 members, so we were able to hold off on posting kanji for the levels for a bit while we focused on something else. Now, we have a good mixture.

Step 5: ENJOY THE SERVER! If you've properly followed steps 1-4, you'll have gained access to the entire server. If not, please message me or you might find yourself in server purgatory where we ping you to get your attention until you either ask for help or you follow through lmao--aka the #temp channel. It's a private channel that only admin and other purgatory-dwellers can see. Once you get your appropriate roles, the channel disappears for you.

If you're thinking, this is a pain of a way to get in: it was a pain for me to set it up like this, too. Trial and error over almost 2 years of being a server. I can say that after setting it up this way, we haven't had anymore trolls or bots enter.

Since I'm trying to get back into posting more regularly, I thought I'd go directly to the people who'd be seeing my posts and ask: What sorts of things are you looking for?

I know having to pick a top choice is kinda difficult, so if people want to rank several of them or add further comments in the notes please do! I just want to see what people are looking for more of, I (and I'm sure others!) want to make posts that people feel like they aren't seeing enough of

Also, I'm not including challenges on the poll (I feel like even the number of options on it now is a little bit too many, haha) but I know those are always fun as well!

First Read of 2023 | New Shop Addition

I'm back! I've officially finished my first Japanese read of 2023: 花野井くんと恋の病 (A Condition Called Love) and I'm quite pleased with myself--it only took me 10 days.

☁︎ I opted to use this series to kick off the new READING PACKS section that I have added to my shop. There's no need to feel daunted when you're trying to read a series or trying to read your first book/manga in Japanese. These reading packs go line-by-line, word-by-word, with the goal of helping beginners read with ease. The goal of the Kingyo Hut shop is to make the unachievable achievable.

☁︎ Each reading pack will include a searchable PDF, as well as an Excel sheet (divided/sectioned by chapters) that you can convert to .csv files to import into Anki or any other SRS study tool that you may use.

☁︎ For this particular pack, there are over 1,000 entries, going line-by-line, word-by-word (in order). Each entry has: page number, kanji, kana, definition, and notes (if necessary). There are also grammar points notated in the files in the "notes" section. Keep an eye out for the next books in the series, too. There are at least 11 more 😉!

☁︎ What makes this different from a regular vocab list or the vocab lists that I sometimes share on my blog? These reading packs are made with beginners in mind, meaning that every. single. word. is on there in some way or another (yes, that means 私, どこ, あんな, この, 友だち and other words that many of us consider to be basics are included on there). This helps you start the journey and feel less daunted. No need to feel stupid when you look up a word--we all have to at some point or another.

☁︎ Currently, I'm using the series that I'm personally interested in reading, but if there's a series/book that you think you'd like to see a reading pack for, send me a message (on here, my studygram, or discord) or an ask (you can be anonymous if you want) and let me know! I can't guarantee that I can do every request (i.e., time, series/genres I may not be comfortable with, etc.), but I will definitely make an effort!
