Postcards from Snagglepuss (Minnesota State Fair edition)
Follow the crowds--and the smoke, for that matter
Perhaps one of the more fascinating(?) sights of the concessionaires at the Minnesota State Fair would have to be the smoke emanating from the vent in the Butcher Boy London Broil Sandwiches stand in a small plaza just off Dan Patch Avenue between the Visitor Plaza and the Grandstand as eye of the round broils away in service to such exceptionally hearty sandwiches--which, when you add barbecue sauce, can get to be a little on the messy side. Hence, make sure to have moist towelettes on the ready.
And the sight of such grilling smoke, believe you me, is enough of an attraction of its own, almost on a par with the fog--which certainly was enough to have Huckleberry Hound chuckling. Especially as sunset had passed and that rather wonderful sensation known as "the blue hour" had just made itself evident, thereby making the display a little more amusing.
And who could argue with the sheer delectibility of such overly tasty and juicy London broil which could make the roast been sandwiches at Arby's look cheap by comparison (though, when I go to Arby's, if at all, I prefer the French Dip sandwiches)?
As if that weren't interesting enow--
"Hello, Snagglepuss ... hello, Huckleberry Hound ..."
"Uh, Top Cat--", remarked Huck.
"Remember, you can call me TC, boys."
"Greetings ... and salutations, TC!" remarked I. "So how did you and clowder manage to make your way here?"
"Road trip, Snag; road trip. I suppose you're aware where I picked up a vintage Studebaker Avanti and managed to get it rebuilt ... and is it any wonder I can accommodate the entire clowder; I assume you know everybody in same ..." (As a matter of fact, the whole clowder--Benny the Ball, Choo-Choo, Fancy-Fancy, Brain, Spook and TC as well--were feasting on London broil sandwiches. Fancy-Fancy, for some reason, could not resist waxing almost poetic over the same, as if he were in the company of some romantically-inclined feline back in Hollywood.)
"I just have to admit there, Snagglepuss," Choo-Choo remarked between bites of his sandwich, "that you certainly manage to get around to the Minnesota State Fair every year."
"Taken as a complement, Choo-Choo," said I.
"Snag, you can just call me Chooch."
"Though I do have to acknowledge," TC was quick to point out, "that Chooch can tend to be a little on the sophisto side of things; it's just his nature, I have to admit."
"I can accept as much," Huckleberry Hound was quick to note.
"Like, Huck, Snag," Spook was quick to add, "with TC around, I have to admit things can get somewhat crazy by turns ... and doesn't this London broil at this time of the evening seem rather tasty?!"
"Spook," TC remarked, "I would have to agree, though oftentimes, back in La-La Land, we can't help but get fond of the delicatessen on occasion. Uniting us with our old 'home patch' back in Brooklyn, you might say."
You can imagine how deep the conversation went from there, with as much TC as his fellow clowder members. Lasting until pretty much the closing of the Fairgrounds just before midnight.

1+1 rougamo
1+1 sandwich.
Well, that’s the literal translation.
In a rather empty locale (Holborn) on a weekend, we came across a seemingly random assortment of Chinese restaurants.  Which kind of fit the bill as the food was to be an odd assortment of Sichuan foods not typically seen in London.  The low price was almost something not often seen these days.
Taiwaness style sausage.  In the way that processed meat often tastes, it was smooth and fulsome.  So much so that I wondered if instead of the advertised pork, this was instead something more exotic like retired racehorse.  Which I guess it might be happy with, as entertaining both on the way in and on the way out.
Pickled shredded daikon.  The sausage came with an unexpected extra, shredded daikon.  Looked rather inoffensive, however like some small ladies I know, with hidden fire.  The numbing chilli inside led for unexpected excitement both immediately and after.
Saliva chicken.  The next dish was one that I have seen translated in many different amusing ways.  Either saliva chicken (a reference perhaps to what it is cooked in or how you would react when it comes near you), mouth-watering chicken (a more polite way of describing it) or chilli chicken (perhaps most accurate).  However, no matter what you call it, it was good.  Delicately broiled chicken, crispy shallots and deep (and fiery) chilli with oil.  Definitely something to drool over.
Traditional Xi’an lamb soup with glass noodles.  Rich and fulsome, the clear broth which packed a kick.  The glass noodles were decent (if rather sparse) but the lamb slices although thin, packed a lambsome punch.  Smooth counterpoint to more bland noodles.
Fish & Sauerkraut.  With spicy undercurrent.  Better described perhaps as fish fillets with preserved Chinese vegetables in soup, the rather staid green colour could be misleading.  This dish brought a tear to my eye as the spicy kick helped to alleviate my boredom with life.  Sometimes I need a kick to get moving and this certainly helped.
Braised pork meat sandwich.  Finishing with a pork sandwich as a final goodbye, it was flaky and meaty.  Although compared to the rest, it wasn’t that delighting on the tongue.  It just wasn’t really to my tastes which is kind of a shame given that this is what gives the restaurant its name.
Although I have to give it to them.  Perhaps 1+1 is a good name.  As in these numerically challenging days where it seems that a £ doesn’t go as far as it could, we could all do with a bit of a reminder to count our pennies.  1+1 doens’t equal 10, 5 or 3.  Instead, sadly it seems that often when I check, it adds up to less than £2.  Yet if that is the case, perhaps you want to come to 1+1 rougamo, your money might go further.
  A quiet eating 8/10.
Lunch (2 course equivalent) was GBP20 per person excluding drinks and service.
  1+1 rougamo

I love making up a quick sandwich and it’s so much easier using my zucchini chaffles that I keep in my freezer. I’ll make a big batch of those and separate them with waxed paper. They freeze great and will keep for several months - if they last that long. This roast beef sandwich is made using two zucchini chaffles, a little creamy horseradish sauce, fresh spinach and thinly sliced london broil. 🤤 The sandwich has zero sugar, zero carbs and still 💯 % delicious! it also goes great with a nice cup of soup. Perfect for these chilly winter days. . . . . #ketofriendlymeal #ygyclub #healthylifestylefamily #organicfood #mealprepideas https://www.instagram.com/p/Cneo1c4Opdy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

3/17/20
Day 2 of my blog.  It was a yoga, walk, work day.  Lots of real work to do today.  Nothing to share there though.  COVID cases are growing in Seattle.  The surge is expected in 2 to 4 weeks.  I’m getting nervous with all of the projections from various models – up to 1/3 of us could be infected.  There are not enough ICU beds, hospital beds, vents, etc.  It’s scary.  My husband finally gets to work from home tomorrow. One less thing to worry about.
I sent my son to the grocery store since I was busy – I also don’t want to venture out of the house much where there are a lot of people.  I gave him a list and he did very well and I am thankful he went.  I asked him to get Boars Head London Broil roast beef. Since they were out – he got nothing – he takes things very literal and did not know to look for substitutes.  I also put bread on the list and told him to pick out what he likes.  He picked rolls for his roast beef sandwiches.  Now we have no bread for toast or other things and but we have sandwich rolls and no RB – oh well.
On my walk today I saw a couple things to share. First is a plant (see picture).  I’m not sure what it is – all I know is that it has a very pungent smell.  I hate walking by them.  I always hold my breath when I walk by them.  Do any of you know what they are? The other picture is of a little neighborhood library – we have these sprinkled throughout the area.  They are the only ones that are open now.  The selection is somewhat limited.
I saw a couple interesting things on Facebook these last couple days. First was a nurse from Swedish hospital (where my husband works) asking people to donate N95 masks because they are running low.  I also saw Pence ask the construction industry to do the same.  Hopefully someone is manufacturing more.  I did order a box a couple months ago which I am keeping in a safe place. Everyone thought I was silly for ordering them.
The other ironic thing I saw on Facebook was a mention on how beautiful the weather was in Seattle now compared to most baseball seasons.  Its sunny and in the 50s and its expected to be that way for a while.  Usually  high school baseball in Seattle is the coldest season of all sports including fall football and soccer.  I invested in a long down coat, portable down blanky and a portable chair with a cover – all for baseball.
One good thing about the sun is that it kills viruses like COVID.  I read an article that during the Spanish Flu and before antibiotics for TB, some care givers put patients out in the sun to help patients heal.  They believed that fresh air and sun were natural ways to heal.  There is some science to this per many sources.
Not sure if any of you have ever had a Chinese foot massage.  They are amazing.  Basically it is a full massage in a room with 4 other low beds in the same room – you keep your clothes on – I wear a tank top and yoga pants).  It is an hour long and a ½ hour is focused on your feet but they also massage your entire body.  I found this amazing woman – she says her name is Lisa but I’m sure she just picked it out.  She is probably in her mid 60s and does not speak any English.  She is the best massage therapist I have ever had.  I have had 100s of massages in very nice salons.  The foot massage is $28 per hour.  The first time I went to her ~ 9 mo ago I was so amazed I gave her a $30 tip. It was literally the best massage I have ever had.  From then on I’ve been 1 to 3 times per month and I always ask for Lisa.  I usually tip her $15 to $20 dollars.  I have not been for a couple months due to Coronavirus.  I was thinking about her last weekend so I decided to go and give her a payment for a massage and a tip.  I am still being paid and she is likely suffering – probably not even legal???  Anyways, I called up and asked if Lisa was available and they said yes.  I went over and asked for her and handed her $60  -she wanted to hug me and I said no.  She was very very grateful.
I then left and got in my car.  As I was driving away I saw her come out looking for me and waving and using prayer hands and bowing and thanking me.  I was planning on doing the same thing in a couple weeks but now these services are closed and there is no way I could find her.  I hope she is okay.  I will go back when things are okay.  Their salon is Happy Feet on Holman Road in Seattle – you have to ask for Lisa – the others are okay – she is amazing.
Until tomorrow

Part of me wants to go downstairs and make a delicious London Broil sandwich and have some of that exquisite Promised Land chocolate milk afterwards and watch some Real Housewives but I'm also feeling like a little ball of discomfort and cramps and I just want to stay in my bed. God I want a little robot butler to grab things for me

I just cooked up what I expect will be a really nice London broil (most of it will become sandwich filling) but what I really want to eat for dinner is ice cream.
(and yes, I could do that, this is an urge that is legit and dammit I get tired of Being Responsible. I’m an adult, I can make my own bad dinner choices if I want to, and if my body weren’t so persnickety about getting enough protein of the red meat kind I might go for it)
