Summary: After getting shot twice, Kim wakes up eight months back in time.
He gets the unique chance to redo his story with Chay.
Can he make the right choices or will he fuck it up once more?
Excerpt:
“P’Kim,” Chay calls for him, terrified. “What is going on?”
“I don’t know, baby,” he says, focusing his attention on Chay. He cups Chay’s face. “Look at me. I’m gonna keep you safe, ok?”
Chay starts crying, but nods his head.
“You need to do as I say, ok?”
“P’Kim, don’t leave me!” Chay cries out when Kim steps away from him.
“Never, baby,” he promises. He sees the look of horror in Chay’s face as he points out something at Kim’s back.
“P’Kim! Behind you!” Kim turns around quickly. There’s a man standing a couple of meters away with a gun aimed at them. Kim rushes to disarm him, but he’s not quick enough. The man fires at them, hitting Kim twice.
I've said before Kim's world is cold and dark in part because he's alone and living away from his family. So now we have him in his family's presence, finally all together and in need of comfort. The warm lighting of the shot, this familial love and togetherness.
This expression is laced with worry and care. He tries to guide Kinn in the direction of what he needs to pay attention to and also what needs to be done to pass Korn's test (which I believe this whole situation is, at least in part).
Artificial lighting but it probably speaks more to the artifice of the situation rather than him lying about his feelings.
>Chay: Dark. He’s essentially alone again. Abandoned by Porsche once more while he goes to 'take care of business'. He's shadowed, he's thrust into this danger but he's not aware of it, no one tells him anything leaving him in the dark (both literally and figuratively).
>Kim: Shadowy scenes but some light with definite warmth in the shot. It's his darker mafia side in the shadow but also his love for Chay in the warmth. He’ll be violent and exist in the mafia world but it’s okay here now because it’s out of love, it’s for Chay, it has a better purpose than before. Also Kim's equal split of light and dark in his clothing [white top, black trousers, 50/50] speaks of his effort to balance both these parts of himself.
Warmth. Chay is bathed in warm lighting in Kim’s presence (unbeknownst to him). It's the secret love and care, protection and safety that Kim is giving him, these warm feelings.
It's a reversal of what we've seen previously [Kim usually being the one illuminated in Chay's presence] because the roles are changing. Kim's now readying himself to be the one to approach Chay, to bring warmth back into Chay's life like the warmth and brightness Chay has previously brought into his life.
At the back we have a shadowed Kim, he's still hiding parts of himself from Chay (for now).
Chay is in front of open curtains within the light, hope for the future when he opens his heart back up. His world is still a light one even if it's not as warm as before.
It’s bright lighting (good, his usual world, he's overcoming things, getting back to himself) but it’s also harsh/cold lighting. It has none of the warmth from togetherness (because they’re not). Chay's world is not as warm as it once was, his feelings hurt and rejected so that warmth is no longer present in his life.
A mixture of dark and light. They’re not wholly one or the other now. They've both impacted and left impressions in one another's lives.
Kim's split background, both dark and light, he's working on integrating the two (finally), having both present in his life. His life is no longer wholly dark and cold. I believe he's finally willing to accept both parts. He's reaching out.
But now Kim is warmer and Chay is colder. Kim is more sure of his feelings now and willing to express them, be the one to reach out. Chay feels more alone and hurt, he still has things to process and overcome.
Comparing Kim’s first and last shots definitely showcase his changes/growth. Dark and shadowed, he’s still alone (for now) but the latter is definitely brighter and warmer, he’s changed as has his life. He’s working towards a brighter and warmer world (toward Chay), with more of himself revealed.
+ Bonus
There's a suspicious lack of warmth in Chay's framing as well as the mother in this shot. Not entirely sure what I think but it matches the foreboding feeling we're left with seeing her expression. They're not one happy, warm and loving family unit.
realizing how insane it is that kim wrote wik over porchay's heart that first day they met but from porchay's pov it said kim.....no this is so symbolic of kim trying to keep these parts of himself separate but chay immediately seeing through and seeing all of him literally from the very beginning OH I'M GONNA BE SICK
i’ve decided to be a little hyperfixated and took a look into kimchays scenes for the 129029349803483422th time and i was paying attention to kim’s very first scene???? in anantrameka university?? where he starts sings???
yes this is OBVIOUSLY foreshadowing kimchay to me,,,, “realized you’re my good memory” kim has throughout the show observed chay’s positivity and eagerness and resilience and kim likes it,,,, “the empty calendar is now full of your name” hello???? all of the guitar tutoring sessions??,,, “every time we sing” THEM SINGING AND PLAYING THEIR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS TOGETHER IN EPISODE 5??? no highway in this part but that’s not important (though i wouldn’t say no to a blissful ‘singing in the car together’ scene later)
but hear me out,,, that’s not why im feeling so unhinged,,,,
let’s go back to this set of lyrics
but what about friday???
how does the concept of friday fit into kimchay??
how is this proof???
aww it’s chay!! look how adorable he looks in episode 7 aww–wait a damn minute
“vendredi"
me: searching back the two and a half years of french i took in high school,,,,,
oh,,,
oh my goddkjdsnjds,,,,
im not kidding the LAYERS in the show is gonna destroy me,,,, and this is barely coherent but i SWEAR kim’s song was always kimchay foreshadowing,,,
Porchay's feelings burst out from his heart and they're so, so incredibly pure and full of warmth, a warmth that Kim never felt in his life before. Despite the promises he made to himself, despite the walls he tried to erect around his heart and despite his guilty conscience, that warmth is so alluring he can feel himself melting. So he crumbles. He kisses Chay on the cheek and lets himself be caged up in a hug so tight it's hard to breathe. But while Porchay radiates nothing but absolute joy and happiness, Kim is torn, ripped apart, crushed by the weight of the secrets between them. But even if he wants to go back he won't ever be able to, because Chay, by not asking anything of him, has already took all that he is.
