while we’re having the endless debate about sorting by kudos or not on ao3, i have to stump for my personal favorite way to find fics:

i basically always go straight to the “bookmarks” page for whatever pairing/tag i’m reading rather than the “works” page, and i literally just realized why: it lights up the same parts of my tumblr gremin brain as my dash does.

content hand-selected by people who are bookmarking shit for their own reasons entirely unknowable to me, so it’s a mix of quality peer review and user xyz’s to-read list

if you keep going back to it there’s a repetition over time as new people bookmark old fics. as a tumblr girlie my brain enjoys seeing Thing I Recognize

brand new fics often show up there if they’re good!! (equivalent: new posts tagged “investing at 5 notes”)

a lot of the top kudos fics keep showing up too because so many people sort the works page that way (equivalent: heritage post)

but so much random stuff shows up too that i would otherwise never find, thanks to the hardworking folks out there sobbing into the bottom of the tag at 4 am (equivalent: those posts with 56 notes from 2011 that somehow?? end up on your dash like bestie how did you even find that)

sometimes there are 30 bookmarks in a row by the same person who has a new hyperfixation and you get to think “good for them”

sometimes you get to recognize a username as someone having good or seriously bad taste

sometimes i see my own fics in the mix!! and get that little hit of positive attention (or neutral attention i guess, when people add a bookmarker tag like “it’s about [my fave character] but it’s ok”)

yeah! people can add bookmarker tags and their own notes! so sometimes people rec fics or add marginalia and their own sortable tags (but most people don’t)

there’s always that one fucking harry potter crossover fic with 194 tags in the mix (equivalent: manscaped ads you can’t escape). not saying this is a plus, but scrolling past the same long post you hate for the dozenth time is also an essential part of the tumblr experience.

re: that last bullet point, the one downside of the bookmarks page is that the filtering isn’t quite as robust as on the works page. you do have all the usual include/exclude filter options, but the very last section of filtering (crossovers, WIPs, word count, date range) is not available. (@ ao3 coders please i’m begging 🥺🙏)

anyway i’m sure the bookmarking economy is different across fandoms, but this will give you a semi-randomized feed of the tag, weighted toward new and popular fics (and, for better or worse, unfinished multi-chapter works and megafandom crossovers). it’s probably a good place to start for people who long for an algorithm, but unlike the usual user-targeted panopticon experience it’s more like the chance to rummage through strangers’ junk drawers for fic. tumblr vibes. you get me.

Sandcastles: Year One, A Sandman Fan-Fic Anthology ⏳

To celebrate The Sandman's one year anniversary this past weekend (how has it been a year already!?), I started a self-indulgent project and decided I wanted to take a crack at typesetting for the very first time.

So, I'm very proud to present: Sandcastles, an 180-page digital anthology that celebrates some of my favorite Sandman fics from the past year! Sandcastle collects shorter fics ranging from gen to mature, and is print-ready and available to be downloaded for free. Through this anthology, I hope others can get the same joy from these fics the same way I did over the past year (think of it as a glorified fic rec list)! (And, if anyone's interested, the print-ready files are available for download as well, if anyone wanted to print their own copy of Sandcastles!)

A Matter of Care by The Garden of Unusual Delights (Shadowland) When Julie is too sad to take proper care of her hair, Frank is happy to help out. 2.5k words / oneshot / complete - this person always gets characterizations Just Right, don't they? this a very sweet and tender moment between the besties <3

What to call it? What to call it? by Anonymous Wally tries to figure out what is different about the Neighborhood. But maybe there is no difference at all. 2.2k words / oneshot / complete - a fascinating exploration / behind the scenes interpretation of the secret 14 audios. the end always has me in my feels <3

Strings Of Fate by A_Cypress_Coffin Frank Frankly lived life by simply trudging along most days, but all of that changes when a new neighbor, quite literally, crashes into him. 27k / multichap / ongoing - a very fun interpretation of Franklydear and how the puppets perceive / experience / handle the true nature of their reality. i Cannot recommend it enough!

To Read a Clock by TurnedWorm Frank and Eddie try to teach Wally to read a clock. They get a bit more than they bargained for. 2.7k words / oneshot / complete - sweet and also Haunting! a stellar combination, and an interesting take on Wally's perspective. ngl it gave me chills!

my chest is bursting with abnormality by springtrap_wiki Wally realizes that something about him isn't as it should be. 1k words / oneshot / complete - a little peek into Wally realizing that he's different than his others neighbors. I like how this is handled - it hits home if im being honest!

Goin’ Out of My Head by 5_24 Picking someone up from the bus station seems like an easy task. But when adding Eddie Dear to that equation and the passenger just happens to be Frank Frankly, the results may vary... 5.4k / multichap / complete - genuinely funny, cute, and entertaining. the perfect read for a laugh!

Inside Jokes by The_PastelVoid In which the puppets are waiting for Sally and discover that Wally apparently has a contagious laugh when Barnaby tells what is called an "inside joke". 2k / oneshot / complete - pure fluff and laughs <3

Goodnight, Wally! by PastelDemon ... But what would happen if, one day, without any warning, Wally suddenly could sleep just like everyone else? 19.5k / oneshot / complete - very sweet with a sprinkling of angst, and an entertaining take on what a new-to-sleep Wally might be like

Welcome Home: Fantasy AU by ImaginatorOfThings What would happen if we took our lovable cast of puppets, and put them into a Fantasy alternate universe? 28k / series / complete - a VERY fun fantasy au with a fascinating twist. it made me tear up, it made me feel some dread, it made me smile! what more could we ask for <3

What's happening in Palestine is a travesty and horrendous. disclaimer here: i am bad about reccing (and god, commenting); i regularly go spelunking for old fic i missed based on a random list somewhere or a fest that happened or some very specific theme i want to read (someday i dream of doing a "random fics i found on LJ and was shocked to love" list, when i have time and space to organize thoughts).

also, my bookmarks are unhinged, i have no idea how many of these authors are on tumblr/who they are on tumblr (for the most part) and this is an extremely random assortment lol. all that being said: enjoy!

in absolutely no order:

Glamours That Don't Fade by WouldItWere (laugh out loud funny, chaotic, perfect mistaken identity-ish. my favorite part is how draco spends the entire fic just giving harry absolute hell literally before, during and after they have sex. it's magnificent)

When Buds Break by andithiel (angsty hanahaki; this is here because fwb pining is one of my favorite forms of angst)

Death, Dessert, and Dentistry (But Not Necessarily In That Order) by glamourtentia (draco is a dentist, harry is a vampire, and this is so fun and sweet and sharp)

what the body wants is coolness by lastontheboat (such a good new established relationship fic, so awkward and tense and real; draco's sense of humor is pitch perfect to me

Smoke and Sweets by BiscuitBrunch (my favorite 8th year fic of all time, and i'm not a huge 8th year person in general. i'm pretty sure i'm just in love with everything this author writes, though; they've actually got me reading an auror harry wip)

The Tapestry of Kinship by khalulu (kidfic with my favorite dynamic, which is that harry starts seeing dad!draco and makes a family with him. also a huge fan of khalulu and would rec all of their fics)

The Interest Here by disapparater (hilarious, god, harry is so fucking good in this and their dynamic is wonderful. for the third time in a row: huge fan of disapparater)

friendly reminder that if you don't like a fic on ao3 please scroll away as quietly as you came because the author can see all your public response

this is a public bookmark note on my fic that is very visibly and obviously tagged as neuvillette/wriothesley (romance).

i need to make it clear that i have absolutely no problem if you don't like my fanfic. i do not force people to read it, albeit my annoying plugs on tumblr. i tagged all my fanfics appropriately, that's all the control i have on making sure that people won't read things they do not like.

but to put a note like this, knowing that i can see it even though you don't put this in the comment section, is quite heartbreaking. it's like an ultimatum, even. regardless whether you meant it that way or not.

i sincerely apologize, but i am going to disappoint you because according to the tag, their relationship will turn romantic.
