Tumblr media
A PhD thesis in English literature represents the culmination of years of academic research and is a significant milestone in the life of any aspiring scholar. This lengthy and intricate document serves as a testament to the candidate's expertise, dedication, and contribution to the field of English literature. In this 1000-word essay, we will delve into the essence of a PhD thesis in English literature, its purpose, structure, and the journey that leads to its completion.
A PhD thesis in English literature is an extensive research project that aims to make a substantial and original contribution to the field. It is the final step in a doctoral candidate's academic journey, and it demonstrates their ability to conduct independent research, think critically, and engage with the existing body of literature. The thesis serves as a platform for scholars to explore, analyze, and advance the knowledge in their chosen area of interest within the realm of English literature.
Purpose of a PhD Thesis in English Literature
The purpose of a PhD thesis in English literature is multifaceted. First and foremost, it is a means for the candidate to showcase their expertise in the subject matter. This expertise is honed through years of rigorous study, coursework, and, most importantly, the extensive research conducted during the doctoral program. The thesis allows the candidate to demonstrate their mastery of the subject, including their understanding of literary theory, research methodologies, and critical analysis.
Furthermore, a PhD thesis is a contribution to the existing body of knowledge. It should offer fresh insights, innovative perspectives, and new interpretations of literary texts or themes. Scholars are encouraged to explore uncharted territories within the realm of English literature, shedding light on overlooked works, authors, or themes. In this way, a thesis adds to the ever-evolving discourse in the field.
Structure of a PhD Thesis in English literature
The structure of a PhD thesis in English literature typically follows a well-defined pattern. While there may be some variations depending on the university's guidelines and the candidate's specific focus, the following elements are generally included:
Introduction: This section provides an overview of the research topic, its significance, and the research questions the thesis aims to answer.
Literature Review: A comprehensive review of existing literature and scholarship related to the research topic. This section serves as the foundation for the candidate's research, demonstrating their knowledge of the field's current state.
Theoretical Framework: Here, the candidate outlines the theoretical framework that will guide their analysis and interpretation of the literary texts.
Methodology: A description of the research methods employed, including data collection, data analysis, and any other relevant procedures.
Chapters or Sections: The body of the thesis is composed of several chapters or sections, each addressing a specific aspect of the research topic. These chapters may include critical analysis, close readings of literary texts, and discussions of themes or motifs.
Conclusion: The final chapter summarizes the main findings, discusses their implications, and suggests avenues for future research.
Bibliography: A comprehensive list of all the sources, both primary and secondary, used in the research.
Appendices: Any additional materials, such as transcripts, questionnaires, or illustrations, are included in the appendices.
The journey towards completing a PhD thesis in English literature is arduous and demanding. It begins with the selection of a research topic, a process that can take considerable time and thought. Candidates must choose a topic that both excites their intellectual curiosity and offers a significant contribution to the field.
Tumblr media
Once the topic is chosen, the candidate embarks on an extensive literature review, delving into existing research to identify gaps and opportunities for their own contribution. They formulate research questions and hypotheses, develop a research plan, and select the appropriate methodology for their study.
The data collection and analysis phase can take several years, as it involves reading and analyzing literary texts, conducting interviews or surveys, and critically engaging with the materials. This process demands a high level of dedication, as scholars must balance their research with other academic responsibilities, such as teaching, coursework, or publishing.
Throughout this journey, candidates often receive guidance and feedback from their advisors or supervisory committees, who help refine the research and ensure it aligns with the highest academic standards. The process culminates in the composition of the thesis, which can be a daunting task in itself.
In the end, the completion of a PhD thesis in English literature is a momentous achievement, reflecting not only the candidate's academic prowess but also their perseverance, critical thinking abilities, and contribution to the field. It is a testament to the vitality of the discipline and the enduring quest to uncover new insights and interpretations within the rich tapestry of English literature.
Conclusion
A PhD thesis in English literature is a significant undertaking that represents the culmination of years of rigorous study, research, and critical thinking. Its purpose is to showcase the candidate's expertise, contribute to the field's body of knowledge, and provide fresh perspectives on literary texts and themes. The structure of the thesis follows a standard pattern, with an introduction, literature review, theoretical framework, methodology, chapters, conclusion, bibliography, and appendices. The journey towards completing a thesis is a demanding one, requiring dedication, intellectual curiosity, and the guidance of mentors. Ultimately, the completion of a PhD thesis in English literature is a testament to the candidate's academic prowess and their enduring commitment to advancing the discipline.

QOTD: Do you organize your books by aesthetic? Pretty spines are pretty spines, and I do have a rainbow shelf, but my books are mostly organized by a bastardized version of the Dewey decimal system 😅 I like having them sorted by genre, author’s last name, and then series order. People have told me it’s a lot, but how do you organize your books or things in general? 🍄📚🍀 . . . . . . . . Five Literary Theories from Philippine Authors
What Must Be Believed In by Jose F. Lacaba The literary theory that this poem used is Cultural Studies because it can be interpreted as the experience of the author in his time, wherein he fought President Ferdinand Marcos and his S-based military dictatorship during martial law. He is telling us that instead of ghouls and ogres, we must fear our fellow people that surround us and are more than capable of doing evil things. "He finally learned what every educated man must believe in with all his heart and soul; That it is man that every man must fear and against man prayers are of no avail."
Force of Circumstance by Jose F. Lacaba This poem used Marxist Theory because it tackles the power abuse that the higher ups execute. The suspects were exempted by the punishment for their wrong doings which shows the struggle that the victim experienced. "When Maritess was released By the son of a congressman, Her boyfriend got drunk, The papers shivered with glee And the cops jerked themselves off."
Night of a Construction Worker by Lamberto E. Antonio Formalism is used in this poem because the meaning can be interpreted through the language, details and structure. In short, it has a meaning within its text. It can be interpreted as it is. "How can you fall asleep when each time you stretch on your back it seems the stars Are slowly swallowed up by the towering roof above?"
On the Death of a Newspaper Delivery Boy by Lamberto E. Antonio This poem used Practical Criticism because it can be interpreted as it is without regarding the author's background, date and place of writing and other information. The meaning of this poem can easily be understood. "Space crowded with ads - Newspaper delivery boy, victim of reckless driver, His head, like a loose coin, had rolled off."
Mareng Mensiya by Fanny A. Garcia The literary theory used in this poem is Reader-Response because the way we interpret this story contributes to its overall meaning. For example, this work can be explained through its moral lesson which is a person who is not related to you by blood can willingly help you, however, when jealousy becomes superior, it can overpower kindness and in the end, the only thing left is regret. "The narrator provides Mareng Mensiya the medicines and gives her love and respect. As time goes by, she gave her the cold treatment because she envy her the happy life of Mely while she is the one having the burden of taking care of Mareng Mensiya."

"𝕾𝖚𝖗𝖊𝖑𝖞 𝕴 𝖉𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖒𝖙 𝖙𝖔-𝖉𝖆𝖞, 𝖔𝖗 𝖉𝖎𝖉 𝕴 𝖘𝖊𝖊 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖉 𝕻𝖘𝖞𝖈𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖍 𝖆𝖜𝖆𝖐𝖊𝖓'𝖉 𝖊𝖞𝖊𝖘?" -John Keats 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 Died this day, 1821, the tragic young poet: John Keats. Born on Halloween day, 1795, Keats was destined for a life of melancholy, cut short by tuberculosis at the age of just 25. Though Keats' name is now synonymous with the English Romantic movement of the long 19th century, during his lifetime he had no association with poets such as William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The larger, European Romantic era spread not only across the continent, but right across the arts (from traditional visual art, through literature, to music) too. It was an intellectual rebellion against the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Enlightenment. It was a rose-tinted backwards glance at Medieval times as an ideal historical moment that celebrated nature in all its sublime beauty, and all its sublime horror. Closely related to gothic literature, emotion and imagination were at Romanticism's core; the movement generated many deep explorations of individual psychology with lasting universal, melancholic appeal. Despite this, during his lifetime, Keats was largely unpublished. It was only in his last 4 years of life that he made his way into print... and he died thinking he had left no legacy. Now considered one of the great English poets, he is widely taught, studied, read, and adored. Today, let us celebrate his life and his truly lasting legacy; 👉 head to stories to see his life mask, photographed at Wentworth Place, his former home in London. . #generallygothic #gothic #gothicliterature #gothicfiction #johnkeats #otd #onthisday #literaryhistory #keats #poet #poetry #romanticism #romanticpoetry #wordsworth #coleridge #wentworthplace #theenlightenment #darkacademia #literarytheory #spookynerd #bookstagram #biography #hardcoverbooks #librarybooks #nonficton #cartography #books #gothicpsyche #odetopsyche #bookquotes https://www.instagram.com/p/B878QgPA6Ej/?igshid=1c3ynyi9fr1f3

Kim Knott - Hinduism: A Very Short Introduction (second edition) (2016) Another of the great little books in the Very Short Introduction series, this is one I actually feel quite competent in commenting, having an academic career in the Study of Religion with most of my BA spent studying Indian religions. As such I've read a bunch of introductory books on the subject and I can tell that this is a nifty little thing. 120 pages is a really short space in which to say anything really substantive about such a vast subject as "Hinduism" which is actually a collective noun for an huge number of religious expressions and beliefs, but Knott does the best possible job for the space allotted. Leaving aside the history of the religion she focuses mainly on how Hinduism is lived and thought today, with some contextualization of course. As a short introductory text it serves as kind of an open door to a much more complex world, and if anyone is truly interested in any specific dimension of Hinduism, be it the epic literature, the philosophy or devotional practices, there really is no need to stop here and the further reading section at the end is a useful starting point. Still, as a first encounter with the main ideas and practices of Indian Religions it's a nice short bite. True Detective is an HBO anthology series made up, currently, of 3 seasons. The initial eight-part mini-series (now known as season 1), which aired in 2014, is set in Louisiana, USA. Season 1 follows a pair of homicide detectives, Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), as they investigate a case which begins with the discovery of a murdered prostitute. The Gothic aspects of the series are presented as eternal, universal, and contextually realistic, resulting in an affective and lasting portrayal of what the Gothic may mean in a contemporary, Southern setting. Today on Generally Gothic, this is what we will begin to explore through a close textual analysis of True Detective, Season 1.
