This Living Hand
by John Keats
This living hand, now warm and capable Of earnest grasping, would, if it were cold And in the icy silence of the tomb, So haunt thy days and chill thy dreaming nights That thou would wish thine own heart dry of blood So in my veins red life might stream again, And thou be conscience-calm’d -- see here it is -- I hold it towards you.

I wish I could put my feelings to words the way this master does, I am a hack in comparison. Gods, this hits close.

Ch204 (p4), A comforting scent
Finny recalls how he once escaped from a facility (that German drug research lab) through an underground passage to an escape hatch. Snake/Wilde says they should try the passage down the hall, the one that Theo said might lead outside. Thing is, even if it leads outside, would it also lead them past the fencing and the snipers?
Snake's lamp goes out, so he/Keats suggests that the kids hold hands to keep from getting lost.
Tumblr media
However, Oliver and some of the others are carrying glass jars of liquid and organs, so they cannot hold hands.
Finny first notices the light down the hall, and Snake/Emily says there's "a comforting scent" coming from there. The kids probably assume that means nature and the outside.
Tumblr media
However, when they open the door, we get this two page spread of them looking into a room where Doll is hooked up to a machine and getting a blood transfusion. We have absolute confirmation that Doll represents Canopus.
Emily thinks of Doll as a comforting scent, and that's understandable. But notice she's the one to say something, not any of the other snakes. And she's the one who has defended Doll in the past, when the others weren't sure they should trust her. So, I'm wondering what Emily really thinks of Doll now. Is it just me, or does Emily also look a bit surprised and disappointed?
Tumblr media
Understandably, they are all shocked. And Doll just says "Snake...?"
Tumblr media
It seems that perhaps Doll doesn't have enough energy to do much else but show slight surprise at their appearance. And she's focused on Snake, since that's probably the only one who means much to her. What's left of her.
Perhaps she (some tiny part of her mind) was hoping he'd eventually discover the truth. 🤔
What if-- what if we get a situation like Violet wanting our earl to shut down Sphere Music Hall? What if Doll herself hates this, because it harms children like the kidnapping before, and she secretly wants it to end? 🤔 🤔
