FINALLY someone said that jesus christ🫣 the texts vids are soooo damn staged. I thought I was the only one seeing through that
i mean you can't really STAGE them, to be fair. like i do think they're all real texts. but the thing is if you look at those videos objectively, and view them as like, yeah dan and phil are A Couple Who Don't Want To Fully Expose The Fact That They Are A Couple And Also They Spend Almost Every Single Day Together. how many texts do they have between them. last year's video was easier because of dan's tour. the one before that had everything between that vid (2021) and the one before it (2018), which is A Lot of texts to choose from. the first one basically had anything from 2018 and before, but also i think the ii era gave them a lot on its own. but like, now? a 2023 wdapteo wouldn't have SHIT. there'd be some stuff from the beginning of the year? i guess? when dan was still on tour? but after that... idk. not much. i think people need to remember that they LITERALLY LIVE TOGETHER. and realistically most of the texts they exchange outside of that, and also a lot of what they text while together, are like... not for public consumption. like can we please remember the part where they pretend they're not together LMAO
actually i saw a lot of people take their texting videos as proof they don't text each other with like, pet names or anything, like they act real casual in texts, but guys.. no ? they just won't show that shit to us. which is fair! more than fair! so much power to them they're so real for that! but if they don't wanna show us that bullshit they really just don't have a lot To Show Us. if we take out the texts that make it obvious theyre a gross as fuck couple AND the ones that expose other personal information ANDDDD we then consider the fact that they're usually in the same place 99% of the time..... literally what would a 2023 edition of wdapteo look like. like if we're being real.

Hello I'm not quoting blog name here but what do you think about this ? Your real opinion about Jimin and Jungkook.
the thing is i dont think jikook are actually together. i think they have feelings for each other and on some level they both know it and i think they play it up in front of the camera because it feels safer in some twisted way-- they can write it off as fanservice. theyre obviously the closest in the group but besides a few drunken... not kisses but charged moments (the hickey hello), i dont think theyve done anything. i think they are acutely aware of the eyes on them and the line they cannot cross, and i think they toe it more often than they probably should. i think they date other people. i think as their outside relationships ebb and flow so does the bond between them, i think there is jealousy, i think there is confusion about what will happen between them. i think theyre both very aware of their status as celebrities and that they will simultaneously be wholeheartedly accepted and carelessly shunned, i think nothing will happen until after their military service, i think, realistically, nothing will happen until after DISBANDMENT, when they try to stay away from each other, bitter, and realize they can't
I think it's beautifully written.
It's the most serene form of adultification of Jikook I've seen so far. Don't get me wrong. Jikook are adults, yes. But they've not always been adults.
But I mean, I would come to the same conclusion too if I was looking at jikook in media res. It's very easy to look at them as they are now and think - for lack of a better word- highly of them because they look like two professionals and two self respecting adults who have control over their charged "chemistry" on screen.
But I'm afraid that's not jikook.
I met jikook as teens and have had the privilege of watching them literally grow to become the jikook we see on screen today.

I don't even think it's clocked for some of them that they are celebrities and some of them are still getting used to the fact they are.
You know there was a time they would stroll into airports and nobody cared? Shocking I know. They took to the streets to sell their own tickets and would keep asking strangers, "do you know BTS"
Back in their own home country not many people even knew who they were.
And you have to understand this fact about them on order to appreciate the gravity of their success. They are a spectacle and such a global phenomenon partly because of their poor to riches story. Let's not belittle that for literary symmetry.
Bts hasn't always been this big huge stars of world dominating proportions. Believe it or not.
That gaze we think shapes their every conduct now hasn't always been there. No one was checking for them like that and like they themselves said some of them even nearly quit because they didn't know they would become this huge.
In the Fandom we talk about Namjoon constantly keeping them in check and reminding them people are watching- mind you these are media trained idols we talking about and yet how many times have we had to clear searches for their blunder? How many times have they had to issue an apology for the song lyrics or comments they've made.
They are constantly reminding eachother of the gaze
BTS came from somewhere. Whatever platform they are on they built it from the ground up. As good intentioned as we are in our analysis of them, we shouldn't take that away from them.
They've been in the mud and they've got some dirt on them and they've done things when they thought no one was watching. But that's part of their journey. You don't need to bend over backwards and clean them up to make them look presentable. Which is what I feel OP is doing here. A cleaned up version of jikook.
Op talks about a few drunken moments- was this before or after Jungkook was legally allowed to drink alcohol? Or is she just superimposing adult jikook on all stages of Jikook's journey? See what I mean?
BTS have talked about struggling with teenage hormones, about struggling with lust and love, watching porn, popping off, girls, boys, dating, attraction, gender expression, struggling with their identity- those are very valid lived experiences we cannot take away from them.
We cannot for instance take away from the fact they shared a bed while naked, the fact they sneaked into each other's hotel rooms and was caught on camera, nor take away from them the feeling of attraction or the fact they love each other.
And while Anon likes to think so highly of them as to believe they could be in such close proximity, as human as they were, as young as they were, as hormonal as they were, willing to experiment and take risks, that they could restrain themselves because of a career they had no idea they would have or because of a large audience that didn't exist at the time, I have no such compunction. Jikook fucked eachother. They were young, and wild and horny and they fucked eachother. It's very simple.

We cannot have a conversation around Tae Tae's struggles and depression, Jimin's complaints of loneliness, Namjoon and Suga's you know what, Jin's depresion and abyss while also not considering what they'd done or what they would have needed to do to cope. Especially when we read that other idols were and are advised to date, do therapy, smoke, do drugs, fuck around- albeit discreetly as a cooping mechanism for these struggles.
They can give each other hickies and rat each other out in public for said hickies, touch their dicks and spank each other's ass, they can play kiss kiss with each other as part of games, and tell each other they like to be tied up, but God forbid they actually kiss.
And gaze or not, there men have lived their lives and gathered experiences. Not all facet of their lives are controlled by our gaze. They out there living their lives I promise you that. They all fucking those they want to fuck, taking substances they wanna take, drinking whatever the fuck they want to drink.
Our opinion of them isn't stopping them from living their lives. That's my opinion and my belief. Just because I say they not screwing no body don't change a thing for them.

I genuinely really, REALLY love your hometown au concept- the fact it's a no powers/no capes au, but also NOT, is really cool? Like exploring what it'd look like if these kids tried to be heroes/vigilantes, but in a realistic way where they're regular people, instead of a "this takes place in a comic book world" way, is something I'm so fond of because it's like combining the things we already love but in a way that makes it all so much more real? Idk, it's nice! Also your comments about Jason needing walking aids make so much sense because now looking back I can see that in that snippet of Jason catching Tim sneaking in, he's sitting in what I presume is actually a wheelchair. Anyways, I wanted to ask what's Kon's deal in the hometown AU, parental figure wise- without the whole Superman v Lex thing, how exactly are both of them connected to him?

Yes Jason is in a wheelchair in that comic I didn't want to make it super apparent since I wasn't sure what I was doing with hometown quite yet and I have definitely changed a few things since then. (Like- tim is no longer in high school I've aged them all up to their early twenties) but that's stayed.
Kon. Conner. Is uhhh OK. Ok. Clark is an investigative journalist known for exposing corporate injustice and helping workers rights whether it be proving unfair hiring practices or exposing like actual literal crimes against nature. He and Lois are a team and they are very, very good at what they do.
Lex luthor is still lex fucking luthor. But superman doesn't exist. Instead of trying to clone Kal, he's going the Smallville route and trying to clone himself. But he wants a eufenically perfect version of himself. So he starts experimenting. Clark is in the middle of a very big expose about lexcorps workers rights violations and he won't stop hounding them and is sooo determined to make them know theyre doing something wrong. And lex, freak that he is, thinks that determination and strong sense of will is very admirable, if not misplaced.
So he wants to like- breed that in. To the clone. Because he's a fucking eugenicist. Except I am very adamant that the combination of two people is not a clone that's a baby.
Anyway- conner is a test tube baby clone amalgation but he ISNT aged up- since they're not trying to fast track a superman weapon they let him age normally. Because again- lex is trying to make himself. Clark has been digging into the shit at lexcorp for YEARS and he keeps finding new horrors and new crimes against man. And like it's worse every time. And the worst one of all? This guy he's obsessed with taking down? He *made a baby* with him and Clark is so fucking freaked out when he finds out.
Like of course he takes conner. But he also doesn't want conner. Conner is like 3 at this point. Clark drops him off at his parents farm and conner is basically raised there by his grand parents. Clark.....visits. (Lex doesn't give a shit but WILL start hounding conner to come stay with him and learn business/evil stuff when he turns 18. It's actually part of the main PLOT of hometown so I'm not gonna get into it)
Conner meets tim as kids because he gives him horse riding lessons because I'm very adamant that since tim is a rich boy from New England he KNOWS how to ride a horse. It's a given. I just want conner to be the one to teach him and maybe stable his horse for him. You know. They can have their horse girl romance movie.
(Not related to anything else but bruce is So Fucking Mad at Clark when he finds out he has a kid he's been neglecting. Like surprise idiot you have to take care of your kid it doesnt matter that you never asked for him conner didn't exactly ask to be made either.)

A huge part of the whump being torture apologia discussion comes from the fact that people exoticize torture. It's foreign. It's something you see in spy movies and read about in thrillers. It's a pain that most people can safely distance themselves from in order to experience emotional catharsis or simple enjoyment. The thing is, some people don't get to have that distance.
It's hard for me to describe the sheer grief that comes with it all. I know a man who was tortured in prison. People who faced abuse from family so severe that it amounted to torture. Someone whose torture was to watch their friends be deliberately hurt. I wish whump writers could learn to have compassion for these people as well, even if their lived experiences are not exceptionally common or openly spoken about.
If an author portrays domestic abuse in their writing, it's generally considered necessary and responsible for them to either write the abuse in a realistic way or to state outside their writing that their portrayal of this very real issue is unrealistic. This respects people's lived experiences with abuse and prevents creating a culture of normalizing and glorifying abusive behavior.
It's most definitely not too much to ask of whump writers to uphold those same standards when writing about torture.

i think im just angry about this topic. like ive got a passion for wanting to get it right, but its driven by anger and frustration. having ppl nitpick the fuck out of everything i say instead of actually having the sorts of conversations that should be had about the topic. i know me being angry edgy tantrum controversial oh whats he gonna say now guy and all that, turns people away from listening to me but i dont know how else to approach it sometimes, i don't want to make excuses for people who i feel should know better. i dont have that kind of patience i guess, at least not right now
i think that anger is like a manifestation, symptom. im angry about the people this happens to, and how catastrophic it is. angry at the people who let it happen. the systems that are built around it. people don't see how systemic torture can be. im angry that the fucking war on terror media frenzy was so effective, because your average person still fucking believes in all the bullshit. or the idea of torture survivors being "broken" like its a personal failure, like its the result of their own shortcomings when they're some of the strongest people you can meet. just all these unfair ideas about it that are everywhere. and people still somehow find it necessary to keep spreading those ideas, even if they know theyre wrong. when it doesnt add anything of value, youre not saying anything about it, youre not actually adding something to the conversation by going along with the bullshit, youre literally just entertaining yourself
i dont know how to not be angry about it, i think. thats the growth goal for me i guess, cause i know this isnt the sorta thing thats gonna fix itself tomorrow. and i dunno your ask just made me think about that, like how i handle this on a personal level. and i think itd be healthy for me to step away from the discussion for a couple days at least and just. accept that i tried to reach people this round, maybe it didnt really work, thats fine, ill try again some other time. also i am writing all this very slowly cause my skull is kinda collapsing in on itself so to speak and maybe that has something to do with me being sorta hopelessly frustrated lmfao. apologies

thoughts re: Rendezvous series and forgiveness
ive had some thoughts recently about how people might react to part 5 of rendezvous when it comes out, ie the final part, and i wanted to share for no real reason
discussions about forgiveness, infidelity and such below the cut
firstly, i want to say that zero iteration the word "forgive" appears in part 5. there is no discussion about forgiveness really at all, and i dont think there needs to be. one of the reasons is that i think the concept of forgiveness can oversimplify complex situations, as well as assign unnecessary value judgments to things. i often feel like being forgiven for something means that you have to label that thing as 100% bad and terrible, and theres no space for what sort of positive change it couldve initiated. this is often the case when it comes to infidelity - which is a whole different can of worms.
on the topic of forgiveness, however, whether its mentioned explicitly or not, ive noticed an extreme allergy to joel being forgiven for any indiscretions towards the MC in fics on this website. it seems like the MC herself can do anything and nobody really questions it when joel takes her back, we can cuck tommy into oblivion, joel can cheat on his wife etc, and all of that is cool and hot and encouraged until joel is the one making dumb decisions. people will literally forgive him for being a mass murderer but not for fucking someone else.
the discussions of morality, which are a huge focus in tlou, seem to stop short when it comes to fictional relationships between joel and MCs. we can all discuss why he merked that hospital full of fireflies, and most tlou fans will justify his actions, saying he did it for a good reason, but any relationship related indiscretions do not get the same treatment. i understand that people are sensitive about cheating, being cheated on is awful, but its unproductive to shut down all discussions about it
just to make it clear: i do not consider his actions in rendezvous cheating, not on katy and not on the MC. the MC feels more cheated on because she has an unhealthy attachment to him
am i defending his actions in rendezvous? no. do i think they need to be defended or condemned? also no. i choose not to see things as binary good/bad - even if i thought everything he did was terrible, whats he supposed to do? be alone forever because of indiscretions towards one person? i know this is fic, and i could write him living under a rock for eternity if i wanted, but this is supposed to be a realistic (in my definition) series, and realistically, thats not what happens to people who fuck up in interpersonal relationships. they move on and live their lives. we all hurt people at some point - its juvenile and delusional to think that just because someone hurt another person, theyre bound to suffer for all eternity.
i think there are a lot of nuances when it comes to relationships especially, and trying to label what hes doing in this series as cheating on the MC/katy, and then saying CHEATING BAD is an oversimplification and ignores the scope of emotion im trying to cover here. even calling it cheating ignores the depth of unlabeled relationships. i think the MC deserves more than that, cause if we say hes cheating on katy, were basically calling the MC the other woman, and the other woman is ALWAYS vilified - except in this case where shes the "reader" character. what if i wrote this entire thing in a different perspective, and katy was the reader?
im in the brainstorming stages of my next big series after love me back, and if i go with the idea thats simmering in my head right now, its gonna be a completely infidelity focused series, about when its acceptable to cheat, who is allowed to cheat and why, etc. joel will not be fucking anyone else in that series or cheating on the MC calm down
this might not be very interesting, and its not addressed to any anons in particular at all, ive just been thinking about it as the parts have been posted and thought id share my thoughts in case anyones interested. its hard to give my full thoughts without spoiling ch 5, so after thats posted i might write another reflection on it for anyone whos interested in my thought process behind the decisions ive made.

A sort of redraw of that one beach scene in season!
I have looked through the gates of hell while searching for the reference image bc I forgot how much hypersexualized and suggestive content there is of the ninja. I mean it’s fine in my opinion to draw them humanised or even shirtless (I do that too) but drawing explicit scenes or body pillows of the ninja (who are just yellow Lego figurines from a children’s show in the end) definitely crosses a line (Throwback to when I was 12-13 and got really into the ninjago fandom on deviantart and saw way too much content of legos fucking or male legos being pregnant??? There was and is a lot of fucked up shit in this fandom)
While we’re at it: can we talk about how unrealistic and essentially just gross it is that the creators gave Kai and esp Cole abs like that? Like I get it it looks cool and the ninja are supposedly very sporty and fit bc they’re constantly on the go, but Cole’s abs are literally level ‚bodybuilder who didn’t drink anything for 3 days so his muscles look nice for that one competition‘. Cole has always been portrayed as the one with a sweet tooth, he is living for cake. So it’s physically impossible to look like that except hitting the gym literally 24/7 when he’s supposed to munch on cake and just eat a lot of mostly unhealthy stuff all the time: Yes Cole is strong (which is also partly linked to his earth powers) but he would have to have a little chub for it so be realistic. Kai makes a little more sense since he’s shown to care a lot about his looks, but still I think it’s borderline unrealistic bc (say it with me) THEYRE SUPPOSED TO BE TEENAGERS. It’s literally impossible for teenagers to look like that, even if we give them the benefit of the doubt and say they’re in their late teens, like 19-20 ish.
I tried to give the boys more realistic bodies, my headcanon is that Kai is 18, Jay is 16, Cole is 19 and Zane is 18 in season 2. Esp Jay got a little chub bc that’s what teenage boys look like if they don’t put a lot of effort into working out. Kai is the only one that has more defined muscles bc like I said, he’s the ‚vain‘ one who puts a lot of work into his looks.
And yes I know the scene was like 10 seconds long and there are cases that are way worse, like shows with real people casting 30 year olds as 16 year olds with rock hard abs and in the end it’s just a kids show about Lego ninja. But I still think it’s so unnecessary to give fucking lego teenage boys such unrealistic abs. Best case scenario: this is someone’s gay awakening, worst case scenario: it kick starts a chain of self doubt and insecurity in a young boy because yes boys and men suffer from ridiculously unattainable beauty standards as well. So please just give the lego people realistic bodies k thanks bye

this is literally from november but im going to answer it now because i finally thought of the worst fanfic trope all across the board. are you ready..... here it comes...
the worst fanfic trope is... drumroll please....
"and they all get therapy."
holy FUCK this is such a shit ass trope. the therapist is usually the most bland as shit whitebread character to ever exist because theyre a therapist and they kind of have to be calm about everything and exclusively reactive and in fiction that makes for a boring ass character and nobody has ever thought "hey what if we made this character like.... a character"
AND BEFORE I GO ON LET ME TALK ABOUT TWO EXCEPTIONS:
you and catalyst. That's Fucking It. because honesty hour is a deconstruction of the "character gets therapy" trope and is actually realistic in terms of what zim going to therapy would be like (or so ive heard, i cannot read it because unreality/gaslighting-y stuff is a major major trigger for me, sorry bout that ^^; my friends rly like it tho) and the catalyst au is a character study first and foremost where red and zama are both allowed to be actual characters and the process of therapy is the main point- especially red's journey thru therapy and the very specific intersection of "yes i want help yes i am perfect we exist." the journey thru therapy portrays an actual change in the characters.... so why do i hate it anywhere else?
because USUALLY when characters go to therapy, it's not to savor the journey of change. it's to Fix them.
this fandom has a plague in it and the plague is this fandoms media literacy is piss poor
(immediately i get a reply saying theyre going to doxx me for accusing them of pissing on the poor)
the invader zim characters cant just be themselves. in order for them to be worthy of sympathy from the audience, they have to change.... and by change, the fandom of course means change into the perfect pitiable cookie-cutter version of mental illness.
so they go to therapy, which here is less of a process and more of an easy bake oven response to characterization- bad person goes in, good person comes out. and now you can sympathize.
a therapist is also inserted so the creator can go "see? see?? the character DOES want to change! theyre in therapy! which is what the Good People do!! so theyre good and we can like them :)" because as i said the fucking plague of media illiteracy is so prevalent that a morally dubious character like say, zim or tallest red, cant just change in an organic narrative way that actually has to do with the plot of whatever it is theyre in. they HAVE to get stuck in the Therapy Box so we can ~see that theyre Good People since theyre Working On It~ and they get shat out as nice good people that we can feel morally justified in rooting for. and i see this a lot in other fandoms too. if youve ever written anything starring bakugo for the BNHA fandom, you know the pressure to soften his character and portray him as a Good Pure Boi is REAL, because otherwise youll be accused of justifying his ~irredeemable nature~ (read: he was a middle school bully.) you as the author either have to plunk him in some off screen nebulous Therapy Program that fixes helps him, or you have to make the narrative constantly punish him for daaring to be a less than stellar person at the age of Fourteen, wether it be by misfortune upon misfortune befalling him, or by you writing bakugo to be self-flagellating to the point where it disrupts the narrative. and this same thing is expected here, with pretty much every single fucking character. and at some point, them beating themselves up for their entire in-show character or the narrative putting them through a trauma conga line of catholic atonement gets real fuckin old.
so they go to therapy.

on the subject of cartoon logic in psychonauts- if we were to frame things realistically, augustus is far from the only wildly irresponsible adult here.
the psychonauts training camp, as a whole, is pretty fucked up- theyre literally training child soldiers as young as like 10, putting them under threat of death and harm daily. at least its an opt-in thing that require parental permission, but as a whole the entry age should be WAY older and the adults proven to be more stable than the ones that are there.
oleander literally hired a mad scientist to kidnap these children and harvest their organs for his own gain, and there was just. not internal system to combat what he was doing. even when he was accidentally broadcasting his plans over the WHOLE CAMP no one did anything about it.
sasha, ford, and milla arent innocent either. i think milla is actually the most responsible out of any of them, taking into account that these are kids that dont need to be dealing with this and keeping her training safe and fun for them. she still, however, is complicit in this, and doesnt put a stop to what her coworkers are doing.
sasha experiments on raz, a kid he met the night before and caught his eye because of his exceptional natural abilities. he has no idea how these experiments are gonna go, and has experimented on kids BEFORE. with DISASTROUS RESULTS. at least his training was gonna be slow and methodical... unless he really was just testing raz and making him believe he was in REAL DANGER just to... what, see what he could do?
and ford literally hitches a ride in this kids brain without even asking, and even if he didnt have a choice, he still shifted the task of saving all of the campers onto raz instead of trying to figure something else out.
and after its all said and done, THEY ALL BRING RAZ WITH THEM ON A SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSION FOR A HIGH PROFILE TARGET THE NEXT DAY? hes capable and wanted this, yes, but hes still a kid!
if we're gonna realistically criticize augustus, we can give the other adults the same treatment

JOLYNE KNOWING HER FAMILY u cant tell me holly wouldnt have gone crazy the moment she was a grandma and ofc her little step brother is one of the first people she tells (theyre on very good terms (works very well w the whole holly goes to morioh instead of joseph in part 4 but alas i might work it all out some day)) and so jolyne visits/gets visited people from all over the world she learns to speak japanese and maybe a bit of french (abdul and polnareff fighting over which french dialect is valid to use) and is one of maybe 3 ppl that can calm iggy anyways even if jotaro wasnt always there for her she deserves to be loved by his family and friends all over the world

I know this is kinda weird but have you noticed that the girls’ proportions are completely off in most promotional material? Like in the anime (not the rebuilds, ew) they’re pretty like, normal, but in promotional material their waists and spines seem to vanish. Is it just me?
first of all, I genuinely love how many asks I get that start with ‘this is kind of weird’. You’re all freaks <33
second of all, yea definitely this is a thing. To whatever level the proportions in the anime are already exaggerated they are usually pushed further in advertising material. On some level this is kind of innocuous--Ads/promo material tend to be a lil off model and generally lack overall design consistency with the ‘official’ designs (e.g. asuka’s hair colour) and i’d imagine (and these are literally just guesses I don’t actually know anything about the animation industry lol) that has to do with them being given less time/consideration as the more ‘official material’ and also maybe the artists working on it. i mean fuck the designs are barely consistent in the anime so i’m not surprised there are some discrepancies in the promos.
However, yknow, fan service as a concept is literally advertising--selling the artificial (and thus infinitely more consumable) idealized body as sexual commodity. so it only makes sense that when placed in a situation where the commodified body is literally being used to sell something, this would only be further emphasized--leading to the kind of stupid proportions and poses we see in some of the advertising. the point here is to produce a body which is inherently unattainable but completely consumable and I think it has to be a little unreal and exaggerated because thats such a central part of the appeal of the artificial body--that it isn’t real but its real enough,that objectifying it is possible but guiltless bc it is already an object.
in the anime, this particular kind of marketing is secondary to the plot, thankfully, which is why the designs are more ‘normal’ (in shades and variations). the strength of the anime is that it is not trying to invite its audience’s investment based on the appeal of the bodies on display but instead on the strength of its story. Fanservice is present, obviously, as a sort of secondary effort at capturing the audience, but it’s not central. in advertising material that is all there is, so it makes sense that its more evident/obnoxious.
I will say the radioeva stuff is usually the exception to this, but probably thats a combo of the particular aesthetic they are pushing and that theyre selling real clothes and so use more realistic ‘models’.
i’m gonna rb this with a link to an essay that talks about vocaloids as commodified bodies and bodies without organs bc it gets at this a little bit and is overall really fucking interesting. obvs vocaloids exist in a more specific context then general anime bodies but certainly you can apply a lot of the ideas.

ngl i don't have much of an attachment to pony flash as i used to when i was younger 😭 i think ever since i got obsessed w eqg i've been more human flash oriented
i used to love flashlight when i was younger! i think now it's more of a "omg theyre so cute :((" ship for me now than an otp
ppl always say pri twi x human flash it's a forced het romance (when it's only rlly het if you see it that way, they're both bi idc) and that they had no proper connection and i can see why they say that? but still, there's nothing so horrible about it that it warranted so much hate for the past few years
eqg flashlight is an interesting concept if you think about it because it's clear that they both like each other somewhat but due to unfortunate circumstances, they can't really do anything about it? i feel like we don't really give flashlight enough credit on that because this happens in real life too, albeit to a less dramatic extent circumstance wise.
they also had flash canonly move on from pri twi despite there have being no rejection made from her whatsoever. and that happens unfortunately! sometimes ppl leave without giving unfinished relationships closure due to other priorities and sometimes we can’t rlly blame them for that.
having the love interest of a show be told they should probably move on and have them ACTUALLY move on and be somewhat of his own person isn't something i see in children's media AT ALL so i'm actually glad with the way they went about it. it's still sad bc they were really cute, it's just realistic i guess? and it just gives him some development too!
i do like to think pri twi and pony flash have some sort of feelings for each other, i just don't have much to say abt that hc wise as i'm not that into fim anymore
though, there is this one vague idea i have in my head? like, for a post-high school story (i'm obsessed with these, as you can tell) which involves the girls needed pri twi for help and so she brings over flash from equestria too and the two flash's meet due to the story
appearance wise i imagine their human forms to be kinda different? pony flash is more himbo like whereas human flash is kinda twinky compared to him (yet he's like 80% muscle).
sunset is jarred because bringing pony flash along wasn't part of the plan. they have him in a disguise as they wander around town, pri twi and pony flash rlly confused until sunset shows them that human flash is . literally a celebrity. so if pony flash is just walking around canterlot looking like a fucking famous idol, it'd be a problem??
eventually the two flashes do meet and i can personally see them butting heads mainly bc they have slightly different views and judge each other a bit too heavily but they get over it !!! bc they have other stuff to deal with together <3
these post-high school ideas i have w eqg are always incomplete bc i have no idea what to do with them but !!!!! yeah that's rlly all i've got for flashlight tbh! they are very cute and i love them v much

wait wait wait can you explain more how to be funny and what makes humor work preferably a la essay form if you’re up to it. I’m reading a comic and the jokes aren’t sticking so I’d love to be able to properly be able to figure out what makes some joeks works but others not so I articulate what I hate about it
This response got kinda long so i’m sticking it under a readmore. TL;DR: I don’t think I can tell you how to be funny and what makes comedy work, I don’t think anyone can tell you that. However, I can give you a bunch of advice and guiding questions on how to go about figuring out these answers for yourself
Honestly I don’t think that’s something I’m capable of doing this in any sort of reasonable amount of time. It’d either have to be something really short and really general like what I wrote in the rvb0 post or it’d have to be incredibly long and incredibly specific where I pick specific good and bad examples of comedy and break down what I think works and what I think doesn’t. It’d take a lot of slow and meticulous work I don’t really have the time for, and I’m also not sure how helpful it would be, because once again, comedy is super super subjective and I don’t want to risk overemphasizing my own tastes/general observations as any sort of gospel.
the best advice i can give you would be to try and properly figure out for yourself why these jokes aren’t sticking! because processing something as Funny is much more of an innate reaction than, like, engaging Cerebrally with Narrative Developments it can be much harder to actually realize why something works or doesn’t. I’m going to start by sticking in what I said in my original RVB0 post here in case anyone is reading this without context.
A rule of thumb I personally hold for comedy is that, when push comes to shove, more specific is always going to be more funny. The example I gave when trying to explain this was this:
saying two characters had awkward sex in a movie theater: funny
saying two characters had an awkward handjob in a cinemark: even funnier
saying two characters spent 54 minutes of 11:14's 1:26 runtime trying out some uncomfortably-angled hand stuff in the back of a dilapidated cinemark that lost funding halfway through retrofitting into a dinner theater: the funniest
The more specific a joke is, the more it relies on an in-depth understanding of the characters and world you’re dealing with and the more ‘realistic’ it feels within the context of your media. Especially with this kind of humor. When you’re joking with your friends, you don’t go for stock-humor that could be pulled out of a joke book, you go for the specific. You aim for the weak spots. If a set of jokes could be blindly transplanted into another world, onto another cast of characters, then it’s far too generic to be truly funny or memorable. I don’t think there’s a single joke in RVB0 where the humor of it hinged upon the characters or the setting.
Then there’s the issue of situational comedy and physical comedy. This is really where the humor being ‘tacked on’ shows the most. Once again, part of what makes actually solid comedy land properly is it feeling like a natural result of the world you have established. Real life is absurd and comical situations can be found even in the midst of some pretty grim context, and that’s why black comedy is successful, and why comedy shows are allowed to dip into heavier subject matter from time to time, or why dramas often search for levity in humor. It’s a natural part of being human to find humor in almost any situation. The key thing, though, once again, is finding it in the situation. Many of RVB0’s attempts at humor, once again, feel like they would be the exact same jokes when stripped from their context, and that’s almost never good. A pretty fundamental concept in both storytelling in general but particularly comedy writing is ‘setup and payoff’. No joke in RVB0 is a reward for a seemingly innocuous event in an earlier scene or for an overlooked piece of environmental design. The jokes pop in when there’s time for them in between all the exposition and fighting, and are gone as soon as they’re done. There’s no long term, underlying comedic throughline to give any sense of coherence or intent to the sense of humor the show is trying to establish. Every joke is an isolated one-off quip or one-liner, and it fails to engage the audience in a meaningful way.
When you see a joke that doesn’t land - try mentally rewriting it. Is there anything you could do to make it funny? Can you bring to mind any similar jokes from other pieces of media that you did like? How does the joke effect the pace of the story - is it an awkward and unnatural pause within the flow of events/dialogue? Is the joke well implemented - that is to say, regardless of how ‘objectively’ funny or unfunny the actual meat of the thing is, is it coming from the right source and directed at the right target? Does it add to your understanding of events/characters/setting, do nothing in this department, or does it detract from/contradict them? Is it immersion-breaking (and if so, is this intentional or meaningful?) or does it pull you deeper into the world you’re being shown?
Once you start asking these questions of both media you like and media you dislike you’ll start to recognize patterns in what lands and what doesn’t, and I don’t think they’re questions anyone else can really answer for you.
I think it also is a question of whether comedy is the intended final destination of a piece of media or just a step along the way. Media that exists solely as a vehicle for jokes is going to have comedy that looks very different than the comedy present in media that exists for heavy narrative purposes but includes moments of levity.
Here are two examples of shows I think are really good and are also about as different in concept, execution, and intent as humanly possible: phineas and ferb and breaking bad.
Breaking bad is probably the most emotionally taxing television experience I’ve had in my life. I mean this as a compliment. breaking bad is supposed to be grueling to watch. It also has jokes in it. the scenes that are funny server to really meaningfully increase the immersion, not break it, and they do this by bringing a very realistic sense of human interaction that grounds the high-stakes melodrama into something that looks a hell of a lot more like reality. There’s one scene in particular i think does just such a great job of exemplifying this. here we’ve got jesse having dinner with walt and his wife while they are, as always, fighting with each other viciously and creating such a horrible and suffocating miasma of tension over the entire narrative, and jesse is trying to break some of this tension very poorly.

Then, in literally the complete opposite vein, you’ve got the phineas and ferb episode ‘lets take a quiz’ which i consider incredibly formative in the development of my sense of humor. The entire Bit of literally this whole episode is that they’re doing this terrible quiz with no rules that makes no sense and candace is trying to win but nobody knows how to play this game.

Phineas and ferb is an episodic children’s cartoon that deals almost exclusively in unreality and the absurd, and so this kind of bit works here.
Saying ‘whats good comedy’ is really hard because it’s just like saying ‘whats good narrative’. There’s no one set of criteria; it boils down to what is the intention of your comedy, and how successfully were you able to act on these intentions?
This really got away from me sorry I am working on extremely little sleep i hope this helped even a little bit. My final piece of advice is: go watch hot fuzz. seriously. go watch hot fuzz (2007) dir. edgar wright and look at how the jokes in that movie are because theyre perfect and i love hot fuzz and it’s fucking funny

-this damn whisper box. so many questions. who named it the whisper box? why are the ropers' old possessions still there? who decided to build a mental hospital on top of it? and patrice! she "hid lucy's secrets" hannah gruen thinks tiffany tried to show patrice video w lucy on it, which patrice then specifically says she hid in the thin mans book. so patrice knows of the thin man? can she see him? does she know he was a ghost/supernatural? she must have a supernatural sense to know about him (unless sal told or some shit) so then when tiffany shows up w/ lucy being supernatural in it patrice hides it to protect her? is this why she is "crazy" kinda like victoria? supernatural elements or ability to sense ghosts makes her unstable? this is why lucy being a ghost/nursery rhyme that she repeats makes patrice worse/"stroke"? how did patrice even get into the whisper box to put the key in the bible and get out without getting trapped? also, her dementia --> lucidity is really fucking off, some people mildly switch like that but usually with dementia they cant even register new shit anymore

-"extra case load and excessive volunteering" ugh. nancy's family here are like, gross in how "good" of people they are // unrealistic, trying to paint carson in the best light/ no way ryan could ever compare (but the reality is theyre not that good of people for lying about nancy) **and shes arrogant to think shes better than everyone else ie the only one who truly lives virtuously, thinks she can do no wrong sometimes even tho using sex to cope, breaking and entering, etc is not morally "good" stuff she still thinks she is the only one who doesnt lie and plays fair (like in the pilot she lists everyone else as a suspect but herself- obviously we know she isnt guilty but no one else does. (i mean in theory we really dont, what if nancy was an unreliable narrator and was actually guilty, that would be a hella cool show)its reactions like that where she cant understand why others like the chief suspect her
-ooooh ironic that in the Good Place carson readily agrees to pay her for helping with cases as opposed to s2 in reality
-nick's house has "problems" so why does he need a lawyer? as opposed to an interior designer, plumber, or realtor?
-in the Good Place nick and george realize they are not going to work out after one date. does this failure in the Good Place predict failure in reality, or merely an easier way of figuring out the truth? does this mean that the "opposite" of the Good Place is reality, or only an opinion of what is better? (nancy says "you all like me" as her opinion of them liking her is skewed; does this then only reflect nancys version for what is the "perfect life"?)
-why is bess a hippie??? and love how george curls her hair and wears pink lipstick here
-if this dream is so realistic then why is the one thing it cant conjure smoke? like how random
-love the locket being a key realization bc with things like jewelry you dont notice the weight of them until theyre gone
-"you all like me" in her perfect life nancy means they "like" her objectively/regardless of circumstance even though liking her is still an objective choice (like they "like" her because of other reasons instead of her working at the claw? (like how you make friends with coworkers/people at school every day but after you leave the job/graduate you never speak to them again) and her "thanks for showing up!" as if theyre not doing exactly that in reality 😐like where is she getting this shit? she sort of acknowledges in earlier eps she is hard to like/that she puts mysteries before friends, but also pushing them away to avoid danger like the previous ep "why do u show up" etc

-"the only one who has the key is you" in the Good Place nancy has the key (smaller picture, to finding out what happened to lucy but bigger picture, post-reveal) but ryan has the clues nancy needs- following the Good Place's mirroring, this just means that in reality ryan will either be completely useless or an active hindrance (but you KNOW this is a dream bc in what universe would ryan remember clues like that 😂)
-so in a perfect universe ryan acknowledges his family's "criminal empire" as opposed to reality where he only makes under cover jabs about disengaging with being an "entitled corrupt legacy criminal" ie finding the bonny scot relics but does nothing about them, etc

-making the call: nancy -unable to make up for lost time/both her mothers had to find out/suffer alone / in the Good Place nancy was able to be with kate while she called, and in reality she had carson; somethig about seeing the mother looking to the daughter for strength in the Good Place instead of the reverse (which is what reality sounded like, kate being strong for nancy through the illness despite the struggle)
-concept: nancy & nick "let's wait out the storm"
-"i believe that you believe it" nick in the Good Place + owen in reality both trust nancy when she says she's seen things (owen's is the teeth) but nick in reality (and not really knowing details) doesnt think much of their "moment" bc it wasnt real (so she had to leave the Good Place to save carson- but if she had known then he wasnt her real dad, would she have stayed to be w nick?)

-soooooo in the first ep nancy breaks into the hudsons house and finds tiffanys secret drawer w the nail polish and finds the amulet with a note that says "for your protection HG" yet on this video tiffany says she talked to a medium who gave her the amulet sooooo am i just confused? HG is hannah gruen obvi so is the address for the medium what hannah gave her? or was the address on the amulet which nancy dissolved in salt water to see? so how would tiffany know where to go? its chicken and the egg which came first hannah or the medium?
and lastly:
i close these two eps with a thought that everything in this show is sealed in death. all the lies, the imagery, the fake constructs people put up to get by all crumple the second someone dies- all the secrets come clean just like these doors have been unsealed.
