i keep seeing fic authors describe Morpheus as having "pianist's hands" and while both comix and tv!Dream certainly have long fingers that could probably span a 10th or 11th on a keyboard, i feel compelled to inform you, as a pianist, we do not actually have strong fingers (it's all leverage of shoulder/back strength) and also Dream's canonically skinny wrists make him insanely prone to tendonitis.

Call Me By Your Name - André Aciman
the reason why elio and oliver call each other by their own names:
the whole "call me by your name and i'll call you by mine" thing is something that i don't really see people discuss a lot online, which is pretty unfortunate because it holds great meaning.
i thought about this a lot, but wasn't really able to find an answer myself. while researching i came upon an explanation by alissa wilkinson published in an article in the vox (source: https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/2017/11/21/16552862/call-me-by-your-name-review-timothee-chalamet-armie-hammer).
before going into that we have to recall the importance of "old arts" for the story.
arts from ancient greece and rome, as well as old literature and music are frequent in the story. oliver is an archeologist, elio reads old books and transcribes music from composers like bach and listz. the tale of the knight and the princess with the iconic line "is it better to speak or to die?" is also fairly old.
calling each other by their own names is yet another reference to old art, this time specifically to greek mythology, as wilkinson explains.
she refers back to the myth of how zeus created people. here's a quick summary of that myth:
in the beginning zeus created people with four arms and four legs, as well as two faces. he feared that the humans might be too powerful, so he used lightning to split them all in half (hence why we only have two arms and legs and one face now). those 'half-people' were damned to search for their other missing half all their lives. without them, they felt lost, empty, hopeless. once they'd find each other, they'd feel whole again and would be able to live in love with each other forever.
in a way, this is the ancient greek concept of soulmates.
now, apply this concept to elio and oliver:
when elio meets oliver, he ultimately finds his other half. not just metaphorically, but literally. taking the greek myth into consideration, oliver would literally be the other half of elio that was split off him by zeus (and of course the other way around as well). when they come together again they become whole. in a way, elio becomes part of oliver and oliver becomes part of elio. they are themselves individually, but they are also each other.
in the book it is frequently more prominent how much elio wishes to become part of oliver, becoming one, even. it's not necessarily meant in relation to sex. so rather than becoming one through the closeness of sexual intimacy, elio primarily wishes to become one person with oliver. in relation to the myth, this describes elio's thrive to come together with his other half again.
in conclusion, aciman literally wrote elio and oliver to be soulmates, which may explain why aciman still, despite all the heartbreak and damage, chooses to give them a happy ending in the sequel novel Find Me.
i honestly find this reference extremely fascinating. being able to create reference like that gives the novel so much depth and meaning, and it also a highly valuable skill to be able to connect different devices this way. once again aciman proves how much of an incredibly writer he really is.

this is the current song i'm learning, love's sorrow arranged by rachmaninov. it is beautiful and it is giving me a lot of problems because it is unfortunately rachmaninov. if you notice the song played to perfection is 4:35 long. i am... not playing it in four minutes that's for sure lol. a work in progress.
the piece i've always wanted to play is of course la campanella by listz. the piano piece. listen to this version by evgeny kissin which i like best, but @ivettel ames might have different suggestions kekekeke! it is very very very far from me at the moment because i took a long ass time off classical music and i'm slowly finding my way back to it. huehuehue. it'll be awhile before i dare attempt this piece. but i hope i will one day.

where YN confronts THEO.
theo x female reader, 1099 words
“i think this app is broken, tak.”
you’re once again in your usual table at piece café, a hot, big cappuccino sitting comfortably between your cold hands.
on the other side, hwang intak is busy scribbling some random words on his notebook, his (now half) pain au chocolat on a white, ceramic plate next to his left hand.
he looks up, furrowing his eyebrows.
“no it’s not, yn. you know what cyborg once said?” he waits for your answer, that never arrives, and continues. ”computers never lie.”
you want to bang your head on a wall, hide under the ground and disappear forever.
you pretend he never said anything.
“what should i do?”
intak once again gives you a random answer, in this case he shrugs his shoulders, and then keeps on going with whatever he was studying.
“i literally cannot face him after what he told me. i could start crying as soon as i hear his voice.”
“you already do that.”
“intak! you’re supposed to help me.”
he sighs and finally drops his pen. he looks at you, eyes big and head tilted. he puts a hand on yours: “yn, you know i really care for you and i really love you.” you nod. “because of this i only want the best for you, which in this case would be to confront him! or at least, check again whether the app was right or not.”
this was surely one of the worse advice you could get, but you gaslight yourself into thinking it’s the push that you needed. you smile, feeling as some, not all, of the weight was finally lifted off your shoulders.
“thank you, tak! i’ll go right now.” you leave a few coins on the table, give him a peck on the cheek and then you rush out of the cafe. in return, intak gives you a half smile, watching you until your figure disappears behind a corner.
your friend’s ‘advice’ definitely gave you a boost in confidence, and you were ready to take the matter in your own hands.
but now, where to find theo?
usually (actually, before he decided to put end to your friendship), you would find him in the football field, either playing with his friends or sitting on the bleachers to study or do whatever.
this time, you spotted him in the music room. he was sitting at the piano with headphones on, so he didn’t notice the sound of a love alarm notification coming from your phone. you looked around a bunch of times to make sure no one else was in a 10 meter radius, and when you saw no one, you finally took courage and made your way into the room.
“theo?” he didn’t hear you. you tried clearing your throat, but the music in his headphones was apparently just too loud. so you walked around the instrument, in order that you were directly facing him.
it took a simple raise of eyes for theo to take a glance at your face. he felt scaredy-sick at your sight, but this time, he didn’t run away. he just gulped, and took his headphones off.
“listz?” you noticed the familiar tune faintly coming out from his device.
“do you need anything?” he spoke firmly.
“yeah. yeah i do, actually.” you once again cleared your throat. you put your sweaty hands on the piano, and finally find the right words. “i want to talk to you.”
“we are already talking.” he simply states.
“i want to talk about the other day.” he doesn’t give up, but neither do you.
“nothing happened. someone made your love alarm ring, so what?”
“yeah, you made my love alarm ring, theo.” you take your phone out again, app open. the number 1 was well visible in the middle of the screen. “why?”
he stood up, packing his stuff and making his way out.
“theo, what the hell? stop running away from your problems!” you followed him incredulously out of the room. what a coward he was being!
“yn, what should i tell you, huh? oh, yeah, i like you. what do you want to hear from me, exactly?” he turned around, his black backpack slung over his left shoulder while he held his jacket with his other hand.
“what do i want to hear? i want to hear the truth, theo. i deserve it. i have been wondering for years whatever wrong i could’ve done to you! i blamed myself for what happened between us! i feel bad and guilty and ashamed every time i lay my eyes on you and you just ignore me, constantly! i am so mad at you for doing this to me. we had 15 years behind us. did they mean nothing to you?” you can’t stop your eyes from tearing up, but no tear falls yet.
theo notices, and he feels his heart breaking. after all, he knew he was in the wrong, but his pride took over him some time ago already, when he was thinking how to apologize.
“yn, i-“
“what are you guys doing here?” you both turn to where the voice is coming from. one of the teachers, who apparently just finished working in one of the classrooms, was looking at you both. “we’re closing the school gates in 5 minutes. get out!”
he rushes you both out, and gets quickly back in the building.
it’s starting to rain, and as you don’t have an umbrella with you, theo takes your hand as he jogs to the nearest bus stop to shield you from the water.
it has been years since theo has last touched you, or else, cared for you.
“so?” he seems to be in his own world as he puts his focus back to you.
“oh, right.” he scratches his head. he takes a deep breath, as he seems thinking very deeply about what to say.
“i’m stupid. i’m very sorry, yn.”
well, you’re not satisfied with his statement (he ignored you for years!!) but it’s still something, and a very good beginning.
“i’m glad you’re aware of that.”
“how can i make it up to you?”
you sigh, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“theo, it’s not something you can just fix in a snap of fingers. but i think you can start by walking again with me to and from school?”
he smiled at you gratefully. you feel happy knowing you were able to confront him, and he felt relieved for being able to apologize (not as he and you wanted to, tho) after all the years.

do you think electric guitar players are doomed to bad posture? Is learning on a classical guitar the only way to not be a hunched and clenched gremlin?
And related, why isn't there more 'classical' repertoire performed on electrics? (I've only found a few such vids on yt, like only one vid of playing Listz' Liebestraum on an electric vs a million on classical guitar)
Classical training helps, but maintaining good posture is really just about having the guitar located in relation to your body in such a way that your arms are at the midpoint of their extension while you're playing. You don't want to be clenched up and you don't want to be straining, you want to be loose, you want to minimize your movements and efforts, and keeping your arms at mid extension helps with this. To do this you need to wear your guitar higher up on the body (at or around the nipple line) and closer in to your chest. Go look up some pictures of how Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine wears his guitar, or how George Harrison used to wear his when the Beatles still toured, or how Robert Fripp from King Crimson holds his if you're more the sitting down to play type. Yeah it looks a little dorky, but good ergonomics seldom look cool.
Re: the second question. There are a few reasons you don't see classical repetoire played on an electric, but it boils down to the classical guitar being a fundamentally different instrument played with a different technique, skills are transferable but not entirely. The neck of a classical guitar is a lot wider (the neck of my Ramírez is 52mm wide at the nut, while the neck of my Hagstrom Viking is 43mm) and at a shorter scale, and the strings are spaced further apart. There are just simply certain things played easily on a classical that are a lot harder to pull off on the narrower neck of an electric.
Then there's the technique, classical players use their fingernails to play, and they're very particular about how they shape and care for them or whether natural or synthetic nails are preferable. Your tone, your volume, and your articulation is entirely dependent on how how your nails strike the strings. Angle, speed, the type of stroke ("Apoyando" rest strokes or "Tirando" free strokes) can massively alter your tone. That sort of subtlety isn't really picked up with an electric pickup. Lastly classical strings are nylon (they used to be gut), electric strings are nickel wrapped around a steel core, you will destroy your nails trying to do classical style finger picking on an electric, and certain techniques are simply impossible (like the tremolo in "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" or rasgueado strumming you find in flamenco). If you're playing finger style on an electric you're using the fat of your fingertips. It's a very different technique rooted in country-western/bluegrass/folk style playing.

I was intrigued and amused and inspired by all the comments on your Maglor playlist post. Would love to see the final list if you want to share!
Thank you so much @sallysavestheday, you’ve given me a reason to finish my Maglor playlist and go off about it! It’s mostly classical music instrumental with a focus on strings, plus a bit of opera, hymns and bluegrass for spice. I am making a bit of a route (libretto?), because I have made it chronological to his arc and put too much thought into it.
Here's the breakdown, with highlights:
Prelude - Technically two different pieces, Zoe Keating’s lovely, lonely strings in Seven League Boot, and then a big operatic start with Agon’s prelude. A prelude for a prelude is kind of cheating, I admit.
For the Valinor period - I wanted to start with the purest, most charming of virtuosity, with a sly edge increasing. Strauss stuff mostly, I thought, and some Valinor-worthy religious pieces. The Agnus Dei might be too much, but in my defence: it is very pretty.
The Unrest of the Noldor - Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, and I'm not even sorry about it.
The First Kinslaying, the Burning of the Ships, the Siege of Angband - This is the one song I knew I had to use when I started the playlist. Listz's Mephisto Waltz, which is not strings technically, but is one of my old favourites.
The Rescue of Maedhros - the well-titled Emotional Violin and Strings Concerto.
The Gap of Maglor and the Long Peace - Dvorak’s Rusalka Op. 114, as I headcanon the Long Peace as a period of cultural revisionism and the sort of folklore adaptation 19th century Romantics loved. La Traditora. Fadinho Picado! I can’t resist adding the Portuguese guitar, and it’s the sort of style that develops best in isolated, fraught circumstances. Ends with Vivaldi’s Cello Concerto in E Minor, II Alegro - which has a funereal, flight-like hurry, to tie in the narrow escape from dragon fire.
The Dagor Bragollach - in earnest now. Or, Maglor invents atonality, to cope! It had to be the Second Viennese School. Schoenberg Chamber Symphon nº 1, op 9, a shameless jump to adagio. Schoenberg & co. should start making appearances whenever things get worse, but tbh? I do not like Schoenberg, so I did not invest a lot on him.
The Lay of Leithian - Quinto Passagio, a pretty fast, anxious, layered harp piece - somewhere far away in the dark, Finrod’s song is coming to an end, and his old duet companion feels strangely uneasy.
Nirnaeth Arnoediad - First a big conquering song, Beethoven’s Lenore Overture (II), and then Adam Hurt’s Forsaken, which articulate well enough together in this context. I am actually pretty proud of as choices - might reconsider if I find better, more epic battle songs that aren’t already in use in the Russingon playlist . Followed by Minha Alma on the guitar, for when the sons of Feanor are scattered like leaves in the wind.
The Ruin of Doriath - Schubert’s String Quartet nº 4 in D Minor, the Allegro. Deceitfully pretty with bursts of force, very repetitive, it does bring the sense of a cycle of violence, by the second minute becomes a siege. I just realized it could have been Vivaldi’s Winter! Well, never mind.
The Sacking of Sirion - Shaskotovich Cello Concert nª 1 in E Flat. This is Kurtag’s quartets in the Elwing/Earendil playlist - I tried not to repeat, but the influence is there in the cello-as-horror genre.
Capturing Elros and Elrond - Paganini’s compelling, unnerving, pitying, pitiful Caprice nª 24 - it works, and not just because of the title. Followed by an almost idyllic part, from Carmen’s Act III, Entr’acte - it really is an in-between acts moment. Again, Zoe Keating on the contemporary violin for Optimist, which despite the name is full of tension. I chose it regarding the conversation with Maedhros, and as a tie-in with the inevitable fate foretold in Seven League Boots, also Keating’s right at the start.
Forth Kisnlaying, Maedhros’ Death, the burning of the Silmarills - Maglor’s fun psychic break is also a genre break! Our one and only not-classical entry, with I am a Man of Constant Sorrow, by the Soggy Bottom Boys.
Wanders ever by the sea - I admit, searching for songs for this was my favourite part. I’m partial to Sillaba’s Na on the kora, Rob Korb’s Sea-Swept cliffs. Also Ricardo Parreira again, now with Meditando.
The End: Phillip Glass's sparse, involving harp composition, in Metamorphosis II - a lot of enjoyable space to dwell on whatever Maglor might become, lamenting by the thankless sea.
In conclusion: I hope this is enjoyable! I like how it is now, but might review it a little bit (the Feast of Reuniting is missing, Maedhros deserves a song of his own here at least), before presenting it as part of the Spring into Arda event, which started this in first place early this month. Not enough harp, maybe? If anyone has harp recs, please do share.
