Faithless - Insomnia 1995
"Insomnia" was released as the second single off of Faithless' debut album Reverence (1996), and became one of their most successful songs. It has, dare I say, one of the most famous drops of its era.
It was originally released in 1995 and reached number 27 on the UK Singles Chart, topping the UK Dance Chart in the process. "Insomnia" reached number one in Finland, Norway and Switzerland. Additionally, it managed to climb into the Top 10 also in Austria, Belgium (number 2), Denmark, France, Germany (number 2), Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, and Sweden, as well as on the Eurochart Hot 100, where it hit number 3. Reverence reached number 26 on the UK Albums Chart. The single also reached the top spot on the RPM Dance Chart in Canada and the Billboard Dance Club Songs in the US, number 16 in Australia and number 39 in New Zealand. After Maxi Jazz's death in December 2022, "Insomnia" charted at number four on the UK Singles Downloads Chart.
MTV Dance placed "Insomnia" at number 22 in their list of "The 100 Biggest 90's Dance Anthems Of All Time" in November 2011. It was voted by Mixmag readers as the fifth "Greatest Dance Record of All Time" in 2013. It was certified triple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 2023.
Faithless member Rollo is the brother of singer-songwriter Dido, featured on poll #120.
"Insomnia" received a total of 43,9% yes votes. :'(

how dare you write so amazingly about creator with religious trauma cause you have hit the spot. Not sure if asks are open, but can I ask for continuation? Maybe reader gets progressively depressed and your followers tried everything to make you feel better like triple the worship, more offerings, maybe even sacrifices but nothing works and one time the creator just breaks down about everything that they feeling and how the worshipers never listen to them, and how the all ever wanted is to be friends with all the characters and not some god, and maybe even tell the characters the trauma from their past live
Jwusjsnejjejejenebahked Omg my first ever ask!! I'm so happy <3
Also, asks are 100% open! I love getting stuff like this,so please ask all you want!
Also that is literally the best idea ever anon omg
Anyway, this is what I like to call a "mirror fic". I.E,I write 2 endings!!
Tw: sacrifices,mentions of death,cults,religious trauma,yeah reader isn't ok,but neither are the acolytes
You finally tell them
Ft- Zhongli
It had been months. Months cooped up in this stupid Cathedral that made your stomach twist and your breathing slow. Months getting gifts and offering and prayers you didn't want. You never wanted to be a God. You began to withdraw. You stayed cooped up in your stupid extravagant room, spending more time reading or staring out the window,or even just sleeping. You could barely breathe most of the time, you felt so trapped. Your lovely acolytes were getting worried.
What had they done wrong? What has made the creator so sad? Were they angry with them? So many questions,so little answers. They couldn't just ask you, that would be absurd! So the priests, church leaders,Adepti,Archons, and your main vessels led a project to cheer you up. It was awful. Your "home" stank of blood, mixed with the sickly sweet smell of food offerings. They had amped up the prayers and worship and offerings and sacrifices. You began to have to attend more sermons, more church services that left you terrified and out of breath. You had to sit through sermon after sermon, song after song about you. It was terrifying, and made you want to cry until nothing was left.
You had even begun to attend sacrificial ceremonies in person. Before they would simply offer the remains of the sacrifice, but now you were seeing the rituals. You were forced to watch so many die for your sake. It made you so…sick. So disgusted. It was after one of these ceremonies that you finally broke. You were sitting on your golden throne, your most loyal and coveted acolytes by your side, when you simply began to cry. You cried and cried and you just couldn't stop. You weeped for all the lives lost in your name. You sobbed for all the people that would never see another day because of you. But most of all,you cried for yourself. You let tears fall down your cheeks, hardening into crystals that fell at your feet. You cried for all the horrors you experienced, both in the past and present. You cried for the changes in your body, the golden blood that now ran through your veins, the crystal tears, the shimmering hair.
The world began to quake at your tears. The winds whipped and howled, the rain fell like bullets. Lightning dashed across the sky,and the ground trembled and shook. The world seemed to be weeping with you. It was listening to your cries and responding in the best way it knew how. When a particularly loud sob racked your chest, thunder came crashing down, lighting following soon after. The rain fell harder, and the ground shook even more. Tevyat was mimicking your body language, and the entire world knew of your pain.
All the things that had happened to you,all the things you'd seen and heard, came rushing back to you like water down a waterfall. The waterfall that manifested your sorrow. Your acolytes were by your side in a moment, kneeling at your feet and begging to know what was wrong. You felt your voice crack through your constant sobs. You let it all spill out,not knowing who you were addressing. You wanted to scream into the void. So you did. You screamed and sobbed and cried, Tevyat crying with you. You howled like the wind, screamed like thunder, spitting word after word like bullets. It all came off your chest in one long rant that didn't even feel real. You let the world feel your pain,as your acolytes kneeled at your feet in shock.
You cried for hours and hours, and you seemed nowhere near done. But then your tears began to dry,and your body felt achey and tired. After what felt like an eternity, your breathing slowed, your sobs turned into sniffles, and your head ached. You fell asleep in your gilded throne, eyes slipping closed despite how they ached, body losing all the tension it had been building just to slump into the plush fabric of the chair. Your acolytes were flabbergasted. What were they to do?
Zhongli proposed to ease the creator back into their role. "They are obviously scared and confused. We must help them remember their status." Many agreed. It would be best for their darling creator to ease back into their status. Only one person proposed letting them live as a regular mortal. They were laughed out of the conference room.
So it was set. They decided to ease you back into your "role" as creator, going as slow as possible so they didn't upset you. Some may have calked it selfish, but they thought they were helping you. After all,who wouldn't want to be god?
When you awoke, your most "loyal" creation sat at the side of your bed. You rubbed sleep from your eyes and stared at the man, waiting for him to speak. Your eyes had lost the sparkle they once had. They looked empty and dull. It looked as if your resolve was finally broken. You had given up on fighting it. Your empty eyes stared at the man, waiting and watching.
"...Your Grace,we understand your pain. We promise to do your best as your loyal followers to make you remember how * divine you truly are." Zhongli stated, straight to the point as always, with a voice as smooth as butter to match. You sat, defeated. They were never going to listen. You were trapped in this endless cycle of worship, and no matter what you did,you couldn't escape. You nodded numbly. Yes,you'd go along with it. There's not much you could do to change it otherwise.
You never wanted this.
*****
Fluff route!
*****
Zhongli proposed to treat the creator as they wished to be treated. "They are obviously scared and confused. We must treat them as they wish, for their own happiness." Many disagreed. It would be most inappropriate to treat you as a simple mortal. In the end, nothing was agreed upon. Zhongli simply shook his head and made his way to your quarters. When you awoke, your most "loyal" creation sat at the side of your bed. You rubbed sleep from your eyes and stared at the man, waiting for him to speak.
"...Your Grace, I apologize for the way i treated you. I didn't understand. I always thought of you as...heavenly....and unapproachable. I never thought you would ever wish to be 'friends' with lesser beings such as myself." Zhongli said, sorrow tracing his tone. To think his God had been suffering all this time…it made him sick. He wanted nothing more than to go on his knees and beg for forgiveness, but he understood that you didn't want that. So he simply sat and waited for your response. You nodded numbly. You let yourself hope, even for just a moment, that you could get out of this. You asked the question that would either make or break your life. The question that would either set you free or trap you further.
"Zhongli, would you like to be my friend?"
*****
And that's all I got lmao

tagged to post my 9 favourite album with commentary by @mathewbaldzal !!!! we r two peas in a pod i think with having a lot to say about some tunes...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in no particular order...
different class (1995) - pulp. this is not my no1 album of all time because i don't have a favorite album of all time, but this album is in part representative of "getting into music" to me. i love 90s britpop, whatever that means for a random american and this is my fav of em all (though i do actually quite rate this is hardcore in pulp's discography). "common people" is one of the songs of ALL TIME. god jarvis's little sing-song sleazyness gets me. really, really, really great classic performance of it at glasto 1995...for some reason "pencil skirt" also always really hits.
home video (2021) - lucy dacus. the newest album on this list by a long shot, but it's had songs in my top5 year end lists since it came out. i've also seen lucy live <3. this album rises above some of the others in similar company (punisher - phoebe bridgers, the boygenius ep, etc) because i never get tired of it. "first time" "hot & heavy" "brando" and "triple dog dare" are nearly always standbys in my listening history. probably gonna be an album-i-listened-to-in-college classic forever...
songs of love and hate (1971) - leonard cohen. maybe none of my favorite leonard cohen songs are on this album, but as a single work, this album stuns me. possibly the most transfixing 44:21 i've ever heard. his lyricism in particular is -- i can't even describe it. the mix with his voice, the sparseness of the instrumentation at time, the harmonies. i'm not a big stories guy but in this, yeah, the songwriting, the stories. i don't think there's another album like this one out there, really.
if you're feeling sinister (1998) - belle & sebastian. the first time i heard this album, i thought i had never heard an album so perfect. i love songs off of it but i nearly always listen to it whole. i love, love, love b&s's early sound (twee, if you will), and stuart murdoch's lyrics really, really shine. this is one of my favorite albums to listen to when i have a headache because it's lovely to just, focus on but not grating at all. i really love "judy and the dream of horses" and "get me away from here i'm dying". really, a beautiful work
rumours (1977) - fleetwood mac. i was sort of scrolling through some of my playlists trying to decide what to put on this list (it's a bit weighted towards stuff that's in rotation now) and i couldn't leave off fleetwood mac (in part to represent the huge part of my music taste that is like. classics 1965-1980). stevie nicks was one of my earlier music obsessions (the OG was the beatles). so many wonderful songs and riffs. i know this was left off the original 12-inch but "silver springs" is one of my favorite songs forever and ever and ever...
nebraska (1982) - bruce springsteen. when it comes down to it, this is my favorite springsteen album. i do think his 1975-1987 run of albums is pretty much perfect but nebraska is a masterpiece in a way that i find hard to express in words. there's a sense of sparseness and distance in this work (in part bc of how it was recorded) that i find so utterly compelling i can't even describe. "nebraska" - especially this 1984 live version - is a perfect song to me. perfect. i also like a lot of the stuff that went into inspiring this album (notably flannery o'connor) and well. where it fits into springsteen's narritivization of his own life (dude was in the dumps).
all killer, no filler (2001) - sum41. this pick is a little bit representative of the era of my life where i basically exclusively listened to pop punk but if songs of love and hate is an album that's perfectly drawn out, this is an album that's perfectly compressed. like, the title is correct. this album is fucking TIGHT. i used to listen to it at a job i hated to make the 30-min intervals go by. and it's got such classics...."fat lip"..."motivation..." of course, "in too deep." SO good.
what did you expect from the vaccines? (2011) - the vaccines. maybe this pick is a tiny bit cheesy but it is a perfect encapsulation of the era of alt rock it came from. which i love. i really like the vaccines, i think they're super fun and i did see them in concert finally and they totally lived up to that. "wetsuit" is again...one of my favorite songs of all time. "if you wanna" is a perpetual banger.
age of consent (1983) - new order. again, an album that deserves to be listened to whole, despite how good "age of consent" hits alone ever single time. sometimes i think i like another new order album more than this, but i don't. sumner's voice just out-of-tune ringing out over that sound, that new order sound, the bass, that post-punk club vibe. they're a band that don't sound like anyone else, and this is the album most indicative of that. wow, every time.
a few narrow misses
boxer (2007) - the national. i didn't get the national until one day i did. "slow show." my god. hello.
very (1993) - pet shop boys. it's too simple to say this is an album about gay love because it's so embedded in it's context but. this is an album with so much love. psb are brilliant.
the execution of all things (2002) - rilo kiley. jenny lewis CALL ME. also like. you know "a better son/daughter". there's more.
a thousand suns (2010) - linkin park. i used to listen to this at 6th grade cross-country practice. first band i ever got into on my own. idk.
this is not only my favorite albums but a pretty decent summation of the broad strokes my overall taste. thank you again for the tag!! i enjoyed doing this a lot :). idk who has done this/on what blogs so if u have PLEASEEEEE send it to me i want to see!! i tag @lfcrobbo @upthebrackets @girlfriendline @odegoob @amandaleveille @thelittlebirdthatkeptsomanywarm @kritischetheologie @bright-and-burning @a-corn-field if any of u want to but no presh!!!

I may have said songs like "The Star Conqeuring Traveler" and "Two Planets Approach The Roche Limit" were my favorite final boss themes, but that just happens to be the top 2. I tend not to talk about "Moonstruck Blossom" from *Kirby Triple Deluxe* because...I find it to be a bit indescribable for me. Much like the "Sparkling Star" movement in "The Star Conqeuring Traveler" it feels like something that you can just feel. Whether it be accompanied by the gameplay you hear it in or just listening to the song on its own. However I do know one thing that feels ever-present throughout the song, that thing being beauty, I think it conveys the beauty of something like witnessing flowers bloom, or the peace brought by nature (in a more "whimsical" context). Dare I say it's almost extravagant, it carries itself with a strong feeling of grandeur. All of which fit what Sectonia *wanted* to be, yet it all came at the cost of losing herself amidst her vanity.

Could you do for headcanons - 3 and 4 for your runner 5 ? :)
HIIII (immense sobbing) (I love them they’re my favorites)
Dynamic trio headcanons (Spoilers for s2 finale btw!)
Yyyep you read that right; 3 4 5, triple threat agency in my BRAIN!! I love to talk about 5am but i honestly feel like 345 would be the best trio in the runner pile! I also think they’re closer in age—somewhere from early twenties to mid-twenties. Idk their canon ages but both Jody and Simon sound around 23-25 to me, and my Five is 22-24.
Jody and Simon are polar opposites and Five is a sponge. Y’know how Simon is all mister Jokes and Funny guy while Jody is a lot more ohhh nooooo zombies brlughg? My Five is a recluse so I feel like this trio will only form in s2, after Sam finally gets through them after AVITD! But even then, my Five is selectively mute and has a hard time socializing, so they’re quiet and would listen to Jody and Simon bicker 95% of the time.
But you know Simon. He’s chatty and funny and always easy going; Five would hate it at the start but they’ll warm up to it eventually. I also think Simon is touchy and my Five is touch averse so they would REALLY hate to be around this guy at first. Jody is a lot more gentle and understanding in a sense. Sure, Five has a notorious record of ignoring everyone at their first few weeks in Abel (they are the type to leave you mid-conversation if you say or do something they don’t like), but Five has let Jody talk longer than everyone else. She’s really nice, y’know? Though Five hates feminine words/pronouns about them so as soon as Jody slips (not her fault though, since my Five hasn’t really communicated that they don’t like fem words), they leave.
Well, premise is that Five eventually joins conversations by being there. Bit by bit. In missions, and then inside Abel when they’re not all busy. Simon would totally swoop in and eat on Runner Five’s table at lunch/dinner to chat them up since he’d be so eager to get through them (bc really, how dare you ignore Simon?? LMAO?? He’s funny and COOL five cmon now get with the program!) In the first few tries, Five gets up and leaves. And then eventually they begrudgingly stay because Simon begs them to hear him out and that he just wants a fun little chat. They got off on the wrong foot but Five eventually happily sits there to hear him out—new song, new story, etc. Stories are fun and Simon is charming. Eventually, Jody joins in, and over time it becomes a little tradition to join Five when they’re alone and chat them up even if they don’t respond as much, or at all. When you’re someone with the reputation of leaving conversations, Jody appreciates their presence alone and Simon would joke about it. “Oh, Runner Five, could’ve told us you were mute and like gender neutral stuff y’know?” And then their bickering starts as soon as Jody swoops in to defend them.
When Five finally starts learning how to sign (thanks to Evan finding a sign language book and giving it to them so they could communicate better), they join the conversations bit by bit. Five can’t sign that fast yet but the two would wait them out before continuing. Five would reference past conversations and it turns out they’re a reservoir of information and memories and conversations. I bet Simon would use them as a backlog to win bets whatsoever. Jody would eventually teach them how to knit or sew 🥹🥹 and then she’d probably let them know how she thought Five was intimidating at first, and that it’s thanks to Sam for figuring out their hard edges so that she knows what to, or what not to, refer or talk to them with. Five likes to draw Jody and Simon chatting and bickering about (apart from all the other pages full of Sam ofc) but they don’t show this to them at all. Only Sam has seen the notebook. My Five is very shy about the drawings.
In missions together, like the whole whack-a-mole thing (s2 side missions), Simon and Five will UNFORTUNATELY do their best to beat the current highscore. Jody would be the one sensible mf who holds the single braincell in the trio but she eventually joins them “Just so they’d be done faster”.
Simon would be the one to call out Five’s specific interest towards Sam and Jody will be the one to hypothesize if it’s a crush or more. The both of them are their best wingmen—with Simon eventually branching out to poking Sam to make a move and Jody taking Five away for private advice and some tips on Sam Yao’s likes and dislikes. Hell, she might also teach them how to sew a new hoodie, or knit a cute little beanie for cold days or nights.
Five’s first words to Jody is something like “you’re a good person”, and it just comes out randomly. Maybe while sewing together somewhere private.
Five’s first words to Simon isn’t really a sentence—it’s just a full-on laughter fit. And then they tell him he’s ridiculous. This is the first time Five would’ve laughed (apart from light giggles within Sam’s presence and jokes).
When Simon turns out to be the traitor, Five takes it really hard. They did find a friend in him and is 100% sure he was coerced into betraying Abel. They’re also empathetic with his decision but that’s overshadowed with anger—towards Van Ark, the apocalypse, Simon himself. If they had the option to talk to Simon when Jamie confronted him, they’d ask him—verbally—why. They’d want to hear him out no matter how long it takes. They’d stay there and just absorb his side of the ordeal. But Five isn’t good at regulating wrath so regardless of what he says, they might also be the one to beat up Simon into a pulp instead of Jamie—and then give him a weapon as a final “I care about you, but you fucked everything up and I can’t trust you anymore.” Then leave him out there like Jamie did. The key difference is that Jamie did it for Archie’s sake and revenge; Five would do it for their own feelings and to relieve the frustration feel. The other half of that murky feeling goes into exploding Van Ark’a last chopper down.

Ok im going to be a hater real quick these are all the lyrics on “the record” that made me say fuck this what the hell is this. Nothing against “confessional” songwriting but not when its SOOOOOO BAD LIKE I am AWARE that all of them can write incredible songs on their own (off the top of my head, their bests: triple dog dare from lucy, chelsea and graceland too from phoebe, basically everything by julien but in particular little oblivions stuff where she’s matured in ability by leaps and bounds). Like they can do better than all of this seriously
The leonard cohen one was like genuinely you would have to waterboard me to get me to listen to that song again. When your lyric is an overused quote, fine if you make it work, when you directly mention who said it, irritating but fine, when you go on to use phrases like “existential crisis” and “horny poetry”? NOT okay. The other two examples are just rehashing, borderline exploitation of their collective history of slow confessional songs, sans everything that made those songs fresh and compelling pieces of art. It’s like a pb/ld/jb song deconstructed into disparate phrases set to heartstring-pulling instrumental. Quote from the incoherent review i wrote in a haze of disappointment directly after i listened for the first time: “letter to an old poet is just a chain of…como se dice…not quite cliches, but unoriginal and lowbrow turns of phrase” almost like when you’re a teen and you line break your bitter thoughts to make sparse “poetry”: you’re not special / you’re evil / and i’m better than you LIKE GET ME OUTTA HEEERRREEE
The singles are good though album peak at not strong enough and i am fond of all of their work and like showmanship but the music…well some of it is heinous. I cant get into the hype because im haunted by the lyrics to leonard cohen and also the way they said karaoke in another of the songs. Americans QUIT mispronouncing things to rhyme them with other words im gonna kill you im gonna kill the next person i hear say karaoke like carry oaky everybody with an american type accent watch your back

ari's top streamed tracks of april 2023 <3
saw my mutual @a-moth-to-the-light do this and it looked fun so here we go (this starts out ok and gets slightly deranged)
'Hold On Tight' - aespa (what can i say its a hit, and its the perfect length for loop listens)
'Rover' - Kai (this will factually be on my end of the year top ten, its so unbelievably good its actually unfair)
'telepatia' - kali uchis (entering my kali era, sza was the gateway drug)
'Typa Girl' - BLACKPINK (pinkchella was fucking insane)
'Tally' - BLACKPINK (pinkchella was FUCKING INSANE.)
'So It Goes...' - Taylor Swift (its so crazy how rep is the only album to exist ever)
'Generation' - tripleS AAA (everyone say thank u newjeans)
'Call It What You Want' - Taylor Swift (the day the locals find out about this song is the day i die)
